if you as a fic reader ever become possessed by the urge to do a popularity bracket with the fics other people wrote and shared for fun and for free, consider:
don't ❤️
#just!!!! make a rec list!!!!!!!!!#popularity contests do nothing but drive writers out of fandoms by pitting people against their friends#and invariably result in people being assholes in the comments as if the people who wrote the fic can't see it#like ''oh clearly fic x is better than fic y''#or ''why is fic c even in this poll?''#nobody gains anything by you doing a bracket to see which fic is the ''most popular''#a stat which could be found more easily & less cruelly by simply hitting the sort by bookmarks/kudos button on ao3#anyway ugh. i saw that one of my fics was being pitted against one of my friend's fics in this bracket that's going around#and i have no idea who is ''winning'' because i refuse to look. but either way it's gonna feel bad!!!#because i want my friend to get his flowers so i want him to win!!! but i also would like to know that people like my fic!!!!#so it's just a lose/lose situation even though i generally don't give a shit about numbers#but this turns it into a schoolyard popularity thing#and the emotional response to having people *vote* on if your work is *better or worse* than other fic is hard to ignore#cannot reiterate enough JUST MAKE A REC LIST#or if you absolutely must do a bracket like this do it in a private chat server or something#don't create a public forum for people to pass value judgements where the authors can see it#and feel bad if they get told their fic is ''worse'' than someone elses#but also feel bad if they get told theirs is ''better'' because it came at the cost of telling another author they weren't good enough#ANYWAY i still feel sick with a super sore throat and a headache & am probably extra cranky because of it#(still testing negative thankfully so it's probably just weather/allergen related)#gonna go make some tea and prep the fic updates i want to post today#cass says things#fandom problems#wank adjacent

Why do you feel that it's appropriate to bring up drama and bash on people that you yourself have started you have not been around for a while? I do not understand your reasoning - what's the point of this, a smear campaign? People are allowed to privately be mad about somebody that is actively harmful to them and their community
You're calling it a smear campaign, even though I have not named what discord server it is or who is directly involved. There is another ask which I could use as an opportunity to bring up what server this is. I just might, considering how this is going.
There is a difference between being privately mad about someone who is indeed harmful; and having a publicly advertised discord server where it is allowed to turn a tumblr user into a meme and openly roleplay as said user pretending to react to situations to mock her.
A recent ask I received and answered from someone currently on the server implies that this is still going on, which doesn't surprise me.
If you really must have a reason why I bring this up, the answer is, I don't know. Honestly, I find it quite weird whenever I see certain users posting under syscourse, and I'm reminded how while there is plenty of intelligent deconstruction of misinformation, there is also a lot of bad-faith bullshit behind the screens. It comes from wanting an easy target to clown on. The easiest thing to do would be to simply block and ignore bullshit while occasionally responding to anything particularly harmful that gets popular.
However, the childish mockery of users on a fairly popular discord server that heavily advertises as being a "mature space" when you read the rules, it is just so gross and hypocritical. Its behavior that just describing will result in the assumption that there must be some kind of targeted smear campaign going on.
I don't care what someone did online, the appropriate response is to fucking block them, and move on. If you want to roleplay as a tumblr user and maker her say funny things to mock her using TupperBox or PluralKit proxies, ok. If you want to bring her up in voice chat as a joke when playing JackBox like she's a hilarious meme, go ahead. It is your decision to do that. However, if you're going to do that on a discord server that's being publicly advertised for anyone on tumblr to join provided that they are an adult and a system... well then you're going to have to deal with someone letting that behavior sit in their brain and think about it and realize how fucked up that is, no matter what absolutely stupid bullshit that person said to make you think that it was appropriate to clown on them like that.
tl;dr - The shit that went down on that server was fucking weird and I didn't like it. No matter how shitty someone is, acting petty is not a mature solution. I'm allowed to talk about what happened if I want to. You calling it a "smear campaign" when I didn't even specify who it was makes me more motivated to share the server (although I forgot exactly who participated directly).
Also, what really motivated me to continue thinking about this was that bracket game which includes both the mocked and the mockees. I don't know who started the bracket game, and I will not claim their intentions, however, it prompted me to think more about how gross that server's vibes were.

You know, we did not get an official first Juke Bodyguard AU kiss. Did they kiss after Julie's show? I'd like to know how their first kiss was
I mean technically you did get their first kiss, it was just brief and apparently unsatisfying. So...let’s try this again. 😂 Have their second kiss.
Julie was pretty sure that her Orpheum concert was the best show she had ever done.
There was the fact that she had been dreaming of performing there for practically her entire life, ever since Reggie and Alex had taken her to her first concert ever in that very same club. There was the fact that for the first time in a long time almost everyone she cared about was gathered to watch her, her dad, and her brothers, and Alex and Flynn. There was the fact that every single note seemed to fall exactly where it was meant to, her voice soaring like never before in a way that felt...easy.
But she would have been lying if she said that any of those factors were the real reason why it was her best show ever.
The truth was a lot simpler.
The truth was she performed the whole concert with a permanent smile stretching across her lips, lips that still tingled from where they had all too briefly pressed against Luke’s. They had exchanged I love yous. They had finally stopped dancing around each other and wondering if the other felt the same.
And they had kissed.
Even if it had been cut frustratingly short.
Still.
There would be plenty of time for that. Like. The second her show ended.
Only it didn’t turn out to be quite that simple.
Luke had clearly had the same idea because he was waiting for her in the wings, hovering even closer to the edge of the stage than he would on a normal night, those big eyes and that distracting grin fixed on her until her final bow. As soon as Julie practically ran off of the stage she was in his personal space, struggling to maintain some small semblance of professionalism by not immediately latching her lips onto his. It was a struggle though and one that he seemed to be feeling too.
“Hi,” She said, looking up at him, as her lip slipped between her teeth.
“Hi,” He echoed, one of his hands coming up to touch lightly at her elbow and usher her slightly farther into the wings.
And that was ok, that was normal, in fact before she had started trying to ignore him they regularly touched way more than this in front of anyone and everyone. Only now her skin practically burned where his fingers rested on it and she found herself unintentionally swaying even closer to him. He must have been feeling it too because the next thing she knew his head was dipping down towards hers, and hers was tilting up and…
Oh.
“Luke,” She whispered, her hands coming up to press against his chest and halt his progress. “Let’s go somewhere more private, ok?”
He didn’t respond right away, his body seeming prepared to fight to continue its journey towards hers for a split second before her words pierced the haze around his mind. He jolted and took a half step back, one hand coming up to rub at the back of his head sheepishly.
“Right, yeah, good idea.”
He recovered from his embarrassment quickly, shooting her another grin and using his grip on her elbow to guide her out into the hall and towards her green room.
Julie wasn’t exactly proud of the way she spent the short walk counting the seconds until  she and Luke could be alone and more properly express their happiness at finally confessing to each other but...that didn’t mean she wasn’t counting them. Unfortunately when Luke finally gripped the door handle and ushered them inside they were very much not alone.
In fact the room was packed with just about everyone she had previously been so excited were there to see her play. Oh. Yeah.
“Julie, that was phenomenal!”
Before she could react, Julie’s dad was striding across the room and sweeping her up into her arms, jostling her away from a frowning Luke in the process.
“Thanks, Dad,” Julie said genuinely, returning his hug before pulling away with a smile.
Her dad wasn’t the only one who wanted her attention and to congratulate her, Flynn, Reggie, Alex and even Carlos all stepping forward to take their turn, the room quickly becoming an impromptu celebration of Julie finally achieving one of her lifelong dreams to perform at the Orpheum. And she appreciated it, she did. So much.
But she was also incredibly aware of Luke hovering at the outskirts of the gathering, Reggie and Alex doing their best to keep him involved in conversation, but his energy practically bouncing around the room and blasting into her with its intensity. She was pretty sure she was matching it if she was being honest. It had been the better part of a year spent thinking that their respective feelings were unrequited and now that the unrequited part had been proved to very much not be true they were both practically vibrating with anticipation of what came next.
So when Julie  glanced over her shoulder and locked eyes with Luke as they each did their best to keep up a conversation with different people, she knew the exact moment that both of them decided they were done waiting.
Luke was suddenly pulling out his phone and making a big show of reading a supposed message that had come through before hurrying over to her and practically tugging her towards the door.
“Sorry everyone, need to borrow Julie just for a minute, official business.”
Julie did her best to ignore the knowing looks Alex, Reggie and Flynn all sent them and the way her dad’s forehead furrowed in confusion, following Luke out into the hall and pausing just long enough to make sure the door was shut securely behind them. That turned out to be all she had time to do before Luke was swinging her gently against the wall and bracketing her body with both of his inescapably muscular arms.
“Sorry,” He murmured, his face once again starting to dip towards hers. “I got impatient.”
“No, yeah, same,” Julie said a little breathlessly, reaching up to rest a hand on each of his shoulders.
“Ok, that’s good then,” He said, his voice dropping by at least an octave as one of his hands slipped off of the wall to rest on her lower back, tugging her even closer to him and wrenching a gasp from her without her permission.
Their lips were just about to connect when Alex’s voice suddenly sounded from just on the other side of the green room door.
“Yeah, yeah, I hear you, I’m on my way.”
Julie’s eyes widened in panic with the knowledge that Alex was about to step out and catch them in a somewhat compromising position. She knew that it wasn’t like they were doing anything wrong, and they certainly weren’t doing anything Alex hadn’t already probably guessed they were somewhere doing. But that didn’t mean she was ready for her best friend and assistant to see with his own eyes the way she and Luke simply couldn’t keep their hands off of each other at the moment. Luke clearly felt the same, only luckily for her his bodyguard instincts seemed to kick in. Just as the handle on the door started to move he tugged her down the hallway and through the next door they came to.
Julie’s first observation was only that it seemed that they had succeeded in avoiding Alex and she let a rush of relief flow through her. But her second observation was that she and Luke were pressed up against each other in what appeared to be a small closet.
Again.
“You’ve got to be kidding me,” She said quietly.
“I guess this is going to be our thing,” Luke answered with another one of those heat fluttering grins. “Don’t worry, I’ll let you know when it’s safe to come out.”
“Oh yeah?” Julie chuckled. “How long do you think it will be?”
“Hmmm…” Luke wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her body even more flush against his. “Hard to say. Better safe than sorry.”
Julie giggled at that, she couldn’t help it. She was happy and she loved him and he loved her and they were finally alone and they were back in a closet and…
Luke’s mouth pressed against hers, at first softly than more insistently, his fingers curling into the soft skin of her waist as she melted fully against him. Julie could hardly process the actual sensation of the kiss through all of the fireworks that felt like they were exploding in her mind as her brain practically sang in elation at the rightness of being Luke and Julie, together. Of course that didn’t last long as her lips parted of their own accord and he instantly deepened the kiss with a little groan of satisfaction that sent tingles from her head to her toes. She brought up one hand to rest on the back of his neck while she couldn’t resist letting the other work its way into that stupid, messy hair. She curled her fingers around a few strands of his hair, her nails scraping lightly against his scalp. His reaction was immediate, seeming to lose his balance at the sensation as he stumbled pushing both of them against the wall knocking over what she was pretty sure was a stand containing cleaning supplies.
Julie broke away from the kiss, laughing uncontrollably as Luke struggled to regain his balance, push away a mop that had landed on his shoulder and reconnect their lips all at the same time.
“I’m going to be honest, I’m thinking it’s probably a good thing I’m getting a new bodyguard soon,” She teased, stroking gently at the patch of skin on his neck she could still reach. “Apparently all it takes to take you out is a scalp massage.”
Luke smirked down at her.
“Oh, so what I’m hearing is you want me to show you my skills,” He said in that soft, low voice that made it really hard for her to focus on anything, even teasing him. “Observing...detecting...physical intervention…”
Julie wanted very badly to make fun of the way he was trying to use bodyguard lingo to get under her skin but the problem was it was absolutely working, which meant it was safer just to say nothing. Instead she let her eyes slide closed, and her head tilt up and could just feel the slightest brush of his lips against hers when a loud knock had them springing apart.
“Are you two done because Julie’s dad would really like to take his daughter to a celebratory dinner and I don’t want to have to be the one who tells him she’s engaged in steamy activities in a random closet.”
Luke groaned and Julie chuckled.
“We’ll be right there, Alex,” She called out.
“Will we?” Luke grumbled.
“Yes,” Julie said with a smile, before leaning up to press one last quick kiss to his mouth. “I love you.”
That seemed to ease some of his disappointment, a sappy, pleased smile spreading onto his face instantly.
“I love you too.”
“Now come on,” Julie said, tugging him towards the door with a grin. “The sooner we get dinner with my dad the sooner you can do one last security sweep of my apartment.”

tagged by the amazing  @thiswaycomessomethingwicked (go check out their writing!) in the First Line game
The rules: List the first lines of your last 20 stories (if you have less than 20, just list them all!). See if there are any patterns. Choose your favorite opening line.
tagging: @alessandriana, @ajcrawly, @simaraknows, @koscheyyy, @selkiebinch, @writingat-night and anyone else who wants to do it!
The problems with my writing being 1. that a lot of it is embarrassing historical hetalia stuff, 2. that i hardly ever write with the intention of publishing, it turns out that often my fics don’t have a set fist line? cos they tend to come in the form of a collection of loose self indulgent little scenes. So this is definitely not going to be 20 of them. Untranslated Polish versions in the brackets.
1.  wildfires and weeds (mdzs, wen ning & jiang cheng, vaguely pre-slash): Courtesy of Wen Ning's heightened fierce corpse senses, and Jiang-zongzhu's being likewise sharp thanks to his high level of cultivation, they manage not to run into each other even when they find themselves in the same general places at the same time - official joint nighthunts mostly, these days, since Jiang Wanyin has enough political awareness and faith in his nephew's abilities not to follow him on the more private ones.
2. provisional title “spiderman meme lol” (legend of fei, xie yun/zhou fei/wu chuchu pining):  After parting with Yin Pei and burying Ji Yunchen the three of them leave together, and Xie Yun - well, he already knew he was absolutely, irrevocably fucked, but it takes him another two days to notice that he is not alone in his misery.
3. the crack-treated-seriously heist fic (mdzs, jiang cheng & jin guangyao): He had already sealed the room shut months before, so he didn't toss the damn flute along with the last shards of his sanity there when he first came back from the siege, broken and bloodied and still furious.
4. Najjaśniejsza, Serenissima, Świetlejszaja (historical hetalia, poland & grand duke constantin):  "Ha!" The duke gestured wildly with his open hands. "I am a fool, Kuruta is a fool, and so you are a fool, too, Felya, even though you have yet to learn to admit it." [- No! - Wielki książę uderzył się dłońmi w uda. - Ja durak, Kuruta durak, i ty też durak, Felja, tylkoś się jeszcze nie nauczył przyznawać do tego.]
5. Pour Away The Ocean (tma, lonelyeyes): The Apocalypse nearing or not (oh, it's coming alright: he knows Jon will get the statements soon, so it's a matter of what? days?), it would be a shame to refuse a rarity that is an actual invitation to a Lukas family funeral. The last Lukas family funeral to ever be held, perhaps, though he doubts the hosts know about that. Peter had never been an overly sharing conversationalist.
6. untitled anti-dior rebellion fic (the silmarillion, doriath after thingol’s death): The change can be felt at the exact moment when the door to Lady Melian's chamber closes behind Mablung, the king's dead body in his arms, and everyone seems to understand immediately what it means. It is as if the thin thread bonding the queen to the mortal world broke, cut on the edge of that door-frame. The last time Lalorniel left the Girdle’s protection was before the first sunrise and now, several hundred years later, the feeling of being exposed to the whole world throws her off her tracks. She looks to the side and sees that Medlindir felt it too, and she wants to reach to him with her mind, but she doesn't - the world around them has suddenly gotten very big and some irrational part of her fears her fae could get lost in it.
7. dwóch ołowianych żołnierzyków (historical rpf, prince poniatowski):  Years later those who choose to believe this sort of thing will be telling stories of a ghost that supposedly visited the prince one night in March of the year 1813. An angel with black-and-white magpie wings. Unnamed white lady from the portraits covering the walls of the Copper-Roof Palace.
8. provisional title “DepTaj Margrabiego!” (the year 1861 in warsaw except its set in a harry potter-style ministry of magic. don’t ask me.):  The margrave transfigured his bed back into an armchair and gestured with his wand at the coffee machine, praying quietly for someone up there to send them some kopi luwak with the next supply package.
9. the year 1861 in warsaw again except now there is a zombie apocalypse going on (once again, don’t ask me. ocs and some hetalia elements.):  "Swear," Sergey hisses with fury as he struggles to push the heavy dresser. [- Przysięgajcie - syczy Siergiej wściekle, szarpiąc się z ciężkim kredensem.]
10. time will say nothing (historical hetalia, poland/france/pauline bonaparte):  Pauline is the one to fall asleep first, as always, not wearing anything else over her thin nightgown - so it can be expected that she will usurp all of the bedsheets to herself during the night. Feliks, who lies in the middle, succumbs to sleep soon after, his face turned to France, mumbling some apologies about not having the energy to move to the other bedroom, which earned him a soothing shush from François.
11. Minąwszy przeznaczeń mielizny (oc, hetalia-adjacent): Sergey wakes up with his cheek pressed to the travel briefcase, a little surprised with the fact that he had apparently managed to fall asleep despite the train's hellishly loud noises. The curtains in his compartment are closed, but he knows that outside it must be even more dark than in here - nothing less should be expected in this part of the world in December.
I am very fond of the opening lines to the doriath fic and the zombie fic (there is a dialogue happening as they are barricading the door and running up the stairs). As for the patterns, I already knew I had the Sentences Too Goddamn Long Disease, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I also like to open with dialogues, which might not be very visible here, but is objectively the truth. This list sadly does not include my 30 minutes shitpost drabbles (which are mostly crack hetalia anyway).

Gutters Cary NC
Gutter Installment in Raleigh, North Carolina If you're comfortable on a ladder and you do not mind obtaining your hands unclean, then unclogging your gutters isn't difficult within the least. Unclogging your gutters can stop problems afterward, saving you an honest amount of cash in repairs. Preventative measures are occasionally the only DIY alternatives. All you would certainly like, as soon as that ladder has been protected, could likewise be a hose and also handwear covers. After withdrawal method dry debris, sluicing the gutters with the pipe will certainly aid keep the water flowing efficiently and also maintain the lots off the structure. Another fast as well as simple option is to place in gutter covers. If water isn't draining pipes towards your downspouts, as well as thus the guttering is or else clean and clog-free, after that it's probably as a result of incorrect positioning of the seamless gutter. Done appropriately, positioning isn't typically visible but rain gutters are really tilted a little for correct drainage-- not directly. Straightening could also be a fairly simple task, so right here's how! To sustain the section of guttering that has actually reached be straightened, drive long nails right into the fascia board at the back side of the seamless gutter, at routine periods. Next off, get rid of the rain gutter assistance braces. Link off a length of string from one end of the fascia to the other, guaranteeing it falls towards the downspout. the autumn should be a fifty percent inch for every ten feet of seamless gutter. Place the brackets replicate, adhering to the lean of the string. Rust must be away from your seamless gutters as soon because it's found, before it results in more destructive troubles. Leaks in plastic rain gutters are virtually always found at joints, where 2 areas are linked to a minimum of each other. These joints are made water tight with rubber seals or gaskets. When these become worn or pried apart by dirt and debris, leakages end up being evident. If you have actually a loose downspout, it isn't the greatest of the planet-- or your guttering. Initially just examine to figure out if there is a linking brace that has functioned itself loosened. If that is the case, just replace the bracket slightly higher or but its original placement, utilizing brand-new pilot holes. Failing that, it would certainly be a loosened electrical outlet. Changing these and also re-affixing the screws or nails can likewise be a get in the park and might take just a few of moments. Electrical outlet aren't always utilized, nonetheless, in these instances 1/4 ″ or 6.5 mm galvanized screws will certainly suffice. You probably don't offer your gutters a lot thought, yet you've them to thank for every door, framework and strip of exterior siding that isn't decomposing from water damages. Your gutters are additionally in charge of securing your structure from splits and also your cellar from flooding. So, it's a massive deal when they're not functioning appropriately. Fortunately, you do not reached disperse heap to fix seamless gutter problems. With the subsequent reminders, you'll establish the method to manage the four commonest residence seamless gutter repairs the Do It Yourself means. Over time, gutters can sag due to particles pileups, high winds or other inevitable weather issues. It is necessary to repair rain gutters that are retreating from your house to prevent drain troubles that could dispose water on your foundation. Thankfully, fixing drooping seamless gutters is pretty easy. Utilize a claw hammer, crowbar or pliers to advise obviate the spikes holding your seamless gutters to your home. If your gutters are lingered by screws rather, use a drill to loosen them. If your rain gutters were safeguarded by spikes, buy seamless gutter screws to trade them. Screws supplies a tougher hold. If your rain gutters were protected with screws, change any type of that are curved or damaged. Line your seamless gutters duplicate with the dominating holes and utilize a drill to drive within the screws. lookout to not drill so deeply that you merely simply dent the seamless gutter. Dripping seamless gutters are a recipe for water damages and also foundation concerns. this is usually virtually constantly brought on by 2 areas of gutter pulling apart at the seam during serious weather condition or temperature changes. Fixing gutter joints takes slightly of time, but it's a straightforward job most DIYers can manage. Utilize your utility knife to chip away at the caulk around the screws connecting the two leaky gutter pieces. Eliminate the screws along side your screwdriver and pull the items apart. Use your utility blade to advise obviate any type of caulk left on either side of both pieces. If there's rust on either gutter piece, use your cord brush to junk it away. After that smooth the earth with sandpaper, use paint and also dry entirely. Utilize the caulking weapon to use your silicone sealer to the within lip of the most affordable seamless gutter piece, discussed since the "downhill.". Meticulously reduced the best item, or "uphill," right into area as well as press both items firmly together for concerning 30 secs. Change the screws as well as apply sealant around them. Specializing within the land market has actually permitted us to focus our solutions as well as supply special programs made especially for the Real estate professional as well as Building Supervisor. Probably the leading usual factor for getting a qualification is that an appraiser is searching for one. When the evaluator inspects your home and is afraid that today roofing system is reaching the top of its life time, they're mosting likely to usually include a roofing system evaluation by a licensed roof inspector. Depending upon the sort of loan the consumer is trying to get, the roof examiner are going to be asked to accredit the roof's remaining lifetime for a certain number of years, typically for a period of from two to 5 years. Sometimes purchasers will certainly welcome a roof covering qualification or perhaps the vendor will provide one to help induce buyers to develop a suggestion on an older home. No matter why the roof assessor offered a certification, you would love to understand the bounds of the assessment and accreditation. Certifications aren't guarantees or warranties. An accreditation is far like an evaluation. It's nothing rather an opinion given by an expert within the field. Just like 2 just as qualified appraisers can disagree about the worth of a home, 2 roofing assessors might disagree regarding the remaining life time of a roofing. Nevertheless, that doesn't indicate one among the examiners is wrong and therefore responsible for the mistaken prediction. The legal question is whether or not your seller's roofing system examiner was negligent in his inspection. Simply put, was his prediction sensible; albeit not inevitably accurate? Besides, the assessor probably earned money around a $150 for doing the inspection. If the examiner was needed to provide a five-year assurance that a roofing will last that long or he'll replace it absolutely free of cost, the value of certifications would necessarily be too high. Let's face it. Your roofing lasted nearly 5 years, also thinking the water invasion was triggered by an entirely eliminated roof, which it 'd not are. Nevertheless, roof coverings leak for a spread of reasons, many caused by something that's an easy solution. That implies the assessor did a fairly great work of forecasting the roof's lifetime. Consequently, I really feel rather comfortable in suggesting that you merely likely haven't any kind of premises to think the inspector was negligent. Leaking roofs are an intrinsic threat of homeownership, a bit like clogged drainpipe lines and peeling paint. As an Atlanta service, you'll not provide your roofing system much idea-- up until it starts to leak otherwise you produce other problems. As trusted experts in industrial land roof analyses, all of us recognize there are a number of vital reasons to have your roof covering examined or analyzed, not the tiniest quantity of which is expense savings from having little troubles attended before they become substantial, pricey headaches or call for complete roofing replacement. What's involved in industrial land roof assessments? It can vary from one business to succeeding, nonetheless you would like to choose a firm who does an extreme assessment. In Atlanta as well as throughout the Southeast there's commonly tons of rain in spring months, to not discuss too much moisture during both late springtime and also throughout the summer season. Water and also wetness are incredibly damaging to roofing systems, as well as might damage every one of the elements including the structural deck, insulation, as well as much more. Having a conversation is important for our roof professionals to advise the "whole picture" with regard to your residential or commercial property. as an example, we'll gather some details from you concerning whether the maker's warranty is in situ, just how old the roofing system is, number of layers, etc. There might also be some inquiries you don't have the response to, which is not any trouble. A visual examination of the roofing is critical to a whole evaluation; without taking a careful check out every one of the elements, it's hard to work out what condition the roof is in or whether fixings reached be made. Normally the main thing commercial roofer search for is water damages or proof of leakages. That stated, albeit there's no indicator of leaks it is necessary to require into consideration anything that would create a leakage within the future. Some of the elements checked during a signboard roof covering analysis consist of:. - Flashing. - Skylights. - Vents. - Aesthetics (utilized to support or install fans, vents, and so on). - Penetrations. - Electric Pitch Pockets. - HEATING AND COOLING (heating and air) equipment. Having the roofing of your industrial property analyzed is crucial not only in discovering and also avoiding roofing system leakages, which protects the structural stability of the building as well as every little thing under the roofing, but it's likewise essential for pleasing the insurance coverage firm additionally, within the occasion of a true estate purchase.

All Is Well (widomauk courtesan AU)
How Mollymauk Tealeaf came to work at the Lavish Chateau
Please consider reblogging or leaving a comment on Ao3!
---------
Sometimes Marion would miss it.
When she sat in her office, which she kept purposely aside from the rest of her brothel, soundproofed and even decorated in a completely clashing scheme from the rest of it all, she would sit alone with books of numbers and order forms and client lists and miss being out there. This had always been what she’d wanted, to own her own house, keep her own place, know that everything was exactly how she wanted it and that everyone who passed through her doors was safe. She had been in enough places that were… otherwise… to have it mean a lot to her.
But still, she would miss it. Never for long, never enough to regret anything, but enough.
If she had the time, if there were no jobs immediately demanding her attention, sometimes Marion would indulge the nostalgic longing that lived in the back of her mind. She would leave the accounts and books and go linger in the bar room, in the booth that was kept clear for her. The bartender would never need to be asked, within a minute there would be a flute of her favourite fruit and champagne cocktail by her hand, and the music would shift and swim in accordance with her tastes.
It was nice to watch it unfold in front of her, the games they all played, subtle, intricate little games barely perceptible to the clients or anyone who didn’t live this life. Knowing when to approach, when to lean just a little further in. When another drink was called for or when to give the server a sign in the hand language unique to the Lavish Chateau workers that the next order needed to be watered down. How to read a client’s wants and wishes, the ones they could barely admit to themselves, in slight shifts of muscle. How to subtly wave over a partner to join the conversation and the eventual revels that would happen upstairs. It was an art in itself, the foreplay and build up, as much as anything that went on in the floors above.
Marion could watch it all and fondly remember when she had been the best at it.
She chuckled to herself that night, sipping her glass, noting happily that it was peach today. You’re getting old, she admonished herself gently as the bubbles popped on her tongue, sitting here with your glory days…
She could imagine most people would think it was a terrible thing, a bitter sad irony, to be a courtesan growing old. Marion smirked in their hypothetical faces.
She came back into the room as a different song began, something softer and sweeter than before, mostly piano. And that was when she noticed the marr in her perfect view. The oddity.
Yasha had spied him too, she noticed, probably before Marion. She was a brand new hire, young and quiet but very good at her job, of course she’d already seen him and was subtly, inconspicuously making her way towards him. Marion held herself stiffer than before, ready to stand and insert herself if trouble was on the cards. Of course she wasn’t as physically intimidating as her new bouncer but she knew how to eject difficult clients.
But, as Yasha reached the figure hunched over the bar and spoke a few, stern words- the only kind of words Yasha was really capable of speaking- she didn’t move to grab him or ferry him to the door. She only looked back to Marion and it wasn’t annoyance or exasperation in her eyes.
She looked worried.
Within a heartbeat Marion was on her feet, heels clicking sharply against the floor as she crossed over. As she grew closer, she noticed several things about the stranger in quick succession, her well honed skills of observation and reading people supplying her quickly and smoothly.
He was filthy. He was young. He was thin.
And he looked terrified.
Marion sank into the stool beside him, bringing herself to his level. He was a tiefling like herself, though an unusual deep purple colour she hadn’t come across before. So not from around here. He was dressed in a dark robe, though dark by design or by the soil and dirt that clung to it, she couldn’t immediately tell.  And underneath it… well he didn’t appear to be wearing anything apart from some tattoos. Not as unusual in a brothel as it would be in some places but still, odd.
“Good evening sir,” Marion smiled as if nothing was amiss, “Are you enjoying your time here?”
He didn’t seem to have heard her at first; his pointed ears, bracketed by an impressive set of horns, didn’t even flicker. But then his cracked lips moved slightly and he murmured something softly.
Marion leaned in, frowning delicately, “M… T? Is that your name?”
“Empty,” Yasha corrected, voice soft so as to use the chatter around them as a cover, “That’s all he said to me too.”
A very bad feeling stirred in Marion’s chest, “Sir? What’s empty?”
The tiefling just gave the barest shake of his head, his curls too matted with dirt and grease to move with the motion.
“Do you need us to get you some medical attention, sir?”
Again, nothing, just a slight intake of breath like he was trying to repeat his only word but couldn’t manage. But Marion could make her own assessment.
“Call for my daughter please, Yasha, if you would be so kind?”
Yasha hesitated, looking between her boss and the young man as if worried to leave them alone.
“I’m just going to take him up to my rooms and help him get cleaned off.  We’ll be fine,” Marion assured her gently.
That answer didn’t seem to assuage Yasha any but she just nodded, “I won’t be long.”
Moving the young man was easy, there was no resistance at all in his muscles and he just half stumbled in the direction he was pointed. Now they were drawing glances, her workers picking up on the snag in the usually calm and relaxed atmosphere, but Marion gave reassuring smiles all around, answering them in their shared language of hand movements that could be so easily missed by clients. All is well.
The young man- the empty young man, as Marion was starting to think of him in her head, as horrible a name as that was- sat on the bed in her private suite, staring into thin air. Like the shadows on the wall were forming an elaborate, absorbing puppet show that only he could see.
Marion set the shower running for him and tried to gesture him to the en suite, “Shall we get you cleaned up?”
Nothing. No kind of response.
Sighing softly, Marion went over to him and guided him to his feet. The dirt clinging to him seemed to be mostly soil, there were green flecks to it if you looked closely. It was particularly crusted under his nails, as if he’d been clawing at the stuff like some kind of digging animal. The robe he wore was far too big for him, seen in close proximity, not just because of how thin he was underneath. It looked as though it was more shroud than cloak.
Marion set her jaw and helped him into the bathroom. He gave absolutely no resistance to her undressing him, like he didn’t feel the fabric against his skin. He was trans, she noted, adding that to her scant information on him. The gently warmed water falling on him drew no reaction either. Though after a moment, when she turned back to him after throwing his robe in the hamper, she could almost see less tension in his muscles, like he’d relaxed ever so slightly in the warmth.
She heard the door to her apartment open behind her. There was only one person who would ever come into her rooms without knocking.
“Mama?” Jester’s voice called, curious. Clearly Yasha had told her a little about their current mystery.
“One moment,” Marion returned, putting a hand out under the water to gently touch the man on the shoulder, not caring when rivulets of scented soap ran under the billowing sleeve of her dress, “I’ll be back soon, alright? My daughter will check any hurts you have.”
She was expecting nothing, more speaking because it would be rude not to. But he inclined his head ever so slightly, water now streaming through his filthy hair and down his face.
“Empty…” he whispered, so soft that it could just have been part of the water’s gentle voice. He sounded so young, so frightened.
Marion gave his shoulder a squeeze, feeling a slighter, smaller version of the same love and fear she held inside her for her daughter. He did look so much like her after all, he could hardly have more than a handful of years on her.
“We will fix this,” she promised, meaning it as much as she could, “And you’re safe here until we do.”
The young man didn’t say his word again and he moved back slightly, as if allowing her to go. Marion went to go but her eyes were suddenly caught on something. They fixed on the young man’s hand, fallen limply by his side. Now it was clean she could see with perfect, horrible clarity just how torn they were, how the skin of his hands was full of ragged splinters, how his knuckles had split, the awful gashes on his fingers.
And they weren’t the only wounds he had. They were simply the only fresh ones.
Every inch of his skin was covered with white, slim scars like a falling of snow. Some were nicks, some were long, all of them cleanly done with a sword that must have been as sharp as a razor.
Marion’s shout for Jester caught in her throat.
There were always spare rooms available in the Lavish Chateau. Marion didn’t have a high turnover in her staff but new faces were always welcome, provided they fit in.
Not that their new guest fit in. But he was welcome all the same.
Marion went to check on him whenever she could spare the time. When she couldn’t, there was always Yasha, who seemed to consider herself in charge of their visitor. It had started as a need to guard him, worrying that whatever violent impulses had earned him so many scars might suddenly reawaken. But now it seemed to be more protective, sitting with him while he slept for when he inevitably woke with nightmares, encouraging him to eat when he was reluctant.
Of course she was there when Marion pushed back the door after a gentle knock. She sat cross legged on the bed with the tiefling opposite her, mirroring her position. He did that a lot, copying others when he was unsure of what to do.
“How are we doing today?” Marion smiled fondly, letting the door close. Of course everyone was maddeningly curious about their guest but he needed his privacy.
“Good,” Yasha gave her a smile, “Watch…”
She faced Molly and clearly, rather formally signed to him in the house’s language. Hello. How are you?
The tiefling bit his lip and signed back to her, his own movements nervous and unsure but it was unmistakably an answer in the same language. I am fine. All is well.
Marion smiled delightedly. The difference in the young man was clear, just how much he’d improved from how he’d been a month ago. He moved on his own, his face held expressions. He still couldn’t talk but he asked for things after his own fashion. He seemed to want to be alone most of the time, the noisy brothel seemed to frighten him a little, but his hands were bandaged and his eyes were clear and present.
And now he could speak to them.
“Yasha, what a wonderful idea,” Marion patted her back fondly, “This is brilliant, it will help him so much.”
Yasha coloured a little, shocking against her pale skin, “I just thought it would be nice if he could  talk to us and if he can’t use his voice… he’s the one that’s picking it up so quickly. He’s learned that in just a few hours.”
He fidgeted a little, looking pleased by the praise. He didn’t always understand what people said to him, like it all came to him through a fog and some things would get lost along the way. But he was good at picking up on tones in people’s voices.
“Well, Mollymauk, well done to you too,” Marion smiles, happy to see him pleased.
Yasha blinked curiously, “Mollymauk? Is that what we’re calling him?”
Marion gave a delicate shrug, sitting in her reading chair, “Well, I had to call him something until he remembers his name. And people are asking about him.”
“It’s a nice name. What does it mean?”
“Well, it’s a kind of albatross,” Marion said thoughtfully, watching Molly who had retreated inside himself a little, practising the hand motions from before until they were sure and certain, “And that seemed to fit him. He’s clearly from the Coast and he just seems like he’s travelled so far. And he looks so unusual, he deserved an unusual name.”
His ears seemed to pick up at that, glancing over at the two of them and giving a small smile. A smile that looked like it might grow.
“Mollymauk,” Marion repeated, “Would that be okay with you?” She translated the name and the question into the hand gestures as she spoke. It took a while to spell out, her hands flitting through the shapes with grace and delicacy.
He tilted his head a little as he processed that, then he looked pleased, answering her with more confidence than before.
Yes. All is well.
Marion always wrote her letters to Ophelia Mardun carefully. They were good friends, lovers on a few occasions when she was back in town and the mood had taken them, but she would never be someone Marion wouldn’t watch her words with.
She was partway through the letter when the knock came at the door. She looked up and spoke a soft welcome, knowing who it would be before he entered.
A year at the Lavish Chateau had changed Mollymauk more than she’d ever have thought possible. He stood much taller than he had before, he wore his own clothes comfortably- patterned leggings and a billowing shirt under a fitted waistcoat- and his horns held bands and caps of gold. Though he’d never be anything but slender, wiry at best, he was fuller than he ever had been and a smile sat comfortably on his face like it was the norm. There were tattoos on his skin that hadn’t been there a year before and his fingers held no trace of ever having being damaged.
Though the scars everywhere else remained. Marion didn’t think they’d ever go away.
“Good afternoon, Molly,” Marion smiled easily, “Tea?”
“Yes, thank you,” he came in and sank into the chair opposite her desk, the one with the plush velvet cushions. Marion never wanted her guests to feel uncomfortable.
At first Molly’s voice had been wobbly and uncertain, just like his sign language had been the first few times. It had come back in drips a few months after his arrival. He’d remembered words here and there, a lot of it copied from Yasha or Jester or Marion, like a parrot in behaviour as well as his colouring. But once he’d mastered a few small sentences, it came to him quickly, his natural skill for quickly picking things up helping him massively. It was a nice voice in the end, gently accented, quick to laugh and joke.
Before long, Marion returned with a little clay teapot, just big enough for two, soft whorls of jasmine scented smoke emerging from the spout. She filled both their cups, not wanting it to be over brewed and bitter.  She knew Molly didn’t like that, he could be quite particular about his tea.
She’d chosen his first name for him, he’d chosen his second. It seemed to amuse him, given how the first few days he’d been here- days that seemed so long ago now- he couldn’t be persuaded to take any nourishment other than weak tea. He’d also more recently gotten into different methods of fortune telling, tarot cards being his favourite but tea leaves had been his first attempt.
Marion found that passing strange, someone with no past being determined to peer into the future. She supposed she could understand it. With one being lost to him, maybe he just wanted to reach forward and have some sense of control. She’d never asked.
He still did love his tea though.
“What’s on your mind, dear?” she asked softly, watching him blow on his tea to cool it, cupping the little clay mug protectively.
Molly didn’t look surprised that she already knew he had something to say. He’d gotten used to her rather eerie perceptiveness.
“I wanted to ask you something…” he sat back, not lifting his eyes from his tea, “Seeing as I’ve officially been here a year and all.”
Marion nodded, the significance of the day hadn’t been lost on her either.
Molly seemed to take a breath, like he was steeling himself a little, “I want to work here.”
Marion absorbed that, blinking steadily, “Mollymauk… you know I’m happy to have you here. But there’s still so much you don’t know? Yet you’ve never shown any interest in looking into it…”
“I know,” Molly said hurriedly, red eyes wide and worried, “And it’s not like I haven’t thought about it. But I don’t want to.”
“You don’t want to? Molly, there could be a life out there waiting for you…”
Molly’s face twisted with unpleasant memories, “A life that ended with me in a grave. Whatever happened back then, I have no idea and I don’t want any idea,” he sighed softly, “All I know for sure is I’m happy right now. I’m happy here. And I want to stay here.”
Marion tilted her head gently, “There’s...there’s other places, Molly, different kinds of work, if you really wanted a fresh start. Some people wouldn’t call what we do here an honourable life or even a good life.”
He didn’t seem surprised by that, the clandestine nature of their home was obvious in a number of subtle ways and inferring from that wouldn’t be difficult, “I don’t understand that. How is it any different from the city market? People need touch and comfort as much as they need anything on those stalls and giving it to them is important. It’s fun here, it’s bright and there’s always laughter and… and it’s safe. I like that. I want to be part of it.”
Marion reached out and put her hands over Molly’s where he held the cup, “Molly, if this is really what you want then of course you can work for us. You’re already part of our family.”
Mollymauk looked relieved at that, smiling hugely, the lamplight catching on the points of his teeth, “Thank you! Thank you so much, I’ll be as good as I can possibly be, I’ll always show up on time, I’ll do whatever you need…”
She laughed brightly, wondering if she’d ever had anyone be so enthusiastic. A year ago, she never would have let someone in Mollymauk’s condition sign up to be a courtesan. But looking at him now, he was so far from the scared, flinching man who’d stumbled into her Chateau just looking for warmth and light. His thoughts were his own, his words were his own, his decisions were his own.
Marion smiled warmly and withdrew, giving him her reply in their own hand language, just for old time’s sake.
You are welcome. All is well.
If she had the time, Marion liked to come linger in the bar.
It was strange how much had changed in a year and how much hadn’t. The taste of peaches and champagne on her tongue was the same. The sound of laughter and love would always be the same. The pride she felt as she sat back in her booth and let her golden eyes slide across the scene in front of her was the same.
What was different were the faces, the clients and some of the workers. Yasha was taller where she stood by the door, a greatsword visible over her shoulder that would have been near impossible for her to heft two years ago. Beauregard, a runaway from some high ranking family she wouldn’t reveal but Marion could guess, was laughing with her daughter over at the bar.
And Mollymauk Tealeaf was in the middle of it, laughing louder than anyone, playfully perched in the lap of a lawmaster, whispering something in his ear while simultaneously signing over to Yasha an unkind but hilarious comment on the scent of his client’s breath.
Marion rolled her eyes fondly, catching his eye and signing for him to play nice. Molly grinned, completely unabashed, and gave her a wave.
He wasn’t always on time. He wasn’t the most reliable of her workers. But Marion still felt a strong love for him, the same she’d felt when he’d first sat at her bar, the feeling that reminded her so much of her love for her daughter.
That hadn’t changed. And it never would.

How Much Money is Actually Too Much?
I sometimes think going after billionaires is too easy.  They are too easy to skewer.  Their wealth is so incredibly obscene that it’s almost too easy an argument to make that they need to be taxed more, like way more.  When I read tweets about how Jeff Bezos makes nearly $4.5 million an hour, it’s too easy to throw my hands in the air in disgust.
And I often wonder if that’s the exact point.   Because so often this narrative of “tax the billionaires” is put forth most vociferously by people and organizations that have a strong interest in keeping the spotlight focused on the billionaires and not, say, the millionaires.
We don’t talk too much about them.  The ones that merely have $100 million in the bank, or even $10 million sitting in a nice hedge fund account.  Because the millionaires are more among us, I suppose.  They are on our televisions.  They seem nice and friendly.  They are the heads of our moderate-sized companies, the men (yes, its always white fifty-year old men) who say hi to us in the hall or buy us all breakfast to say thanks for putting in all those extra hours.  The millionaire seems a bit more real.  Perhaps this is by design, so we don’t take their money, too.
Elizabeth Warren proposed a wealth tax of 2% on wealth above $50 million and an extra 1% on wealth above a billion.  This is a good idea.  But where did $50 million come from?  Is $50 million that policy-wonk cutoff of obscene wealth.  If so, it’s certainly better than $1 billion.  But is even that threshold too high.  We probably would all agree that having a million dollars in the bank makes you rich but not obscenely rich.  But $10 million? That’s a separate discussion.  Sure, buying a yacht is a moral crime.  But why is that not ok but buying a $1,500 Prada handbag perfectly fine?
It’s weird how we look at displays of wealth and assign judgement on certain spending and not others.  Because honestly, it’s tough to justify buying the latest BMW when people can’t afford insulin. But we all do it without much thought, and then shake our fists because other people buy private jets. I’m guilty of this.  I just shamed BMW owners, but I have a nice phone that I probably don’t really need. I can be better.  We all can, but when it comes to a reasonable policy, how do we define who is rich?
The current U.S. government tax brackets lump anyone making $510,301 or more into the same category. These people pay 37% of their income above $510,301 to the federal government.   Some people might look at this and scoff at the idea that someone earning tens of millions a year pays the same rate as someone earning only $510,301.  I take a different view.
I see it as the government determining that, while there may be a vast difference between $500,000 and $1 billion, the lifestyle of the billionaire is not substantially different than the lifestyle of the millionaire.   Both have all their basic needs met and then some.  The millionaire likely knows a lot of the same people as the billionaire and probably exerts political influence in the same realm as the billionaire.  If the millionaire wants something completely frivolous, they can afford it, just like the billionaire.   The billionaire could buy a library for Harvard, and the millionaire cannot.  But both can afford to send their kids there, and both attend the same alumni functions.  They go to the same parties, donate to the same politicians, and eat at the same overpriced Vegan fusion restaurants.  There’s a reason you read about celebrities dating tech CEOs or Hedge Fund managers. Because they operate in the same circles.
The government seems to get this better than us.  But what does that mean in terms of policy?   Should a doctor who works crazy hours but makes $500,00 a year get taxed the same as a famous actor who gets the same for a week’s work?  Do we just look at everyone’s bank accounts at the end of the year and take a cut out of any account over $1 million?
No, I think the answer is more nuanced that that.  It’s a moral failing when certain people can make in one day what a teacher takes a year to earn.  But this is a problem I doubt can be solved.  Capitalism is what it is.  We’re never going to be able to pay a teacher or a home health aide as much as a movie star or tech CEO makes because the teacher and health aid do not directly generate revenue like the movie star or CEO does.  I think it’s disgusting that an actor can earn $50,000 a day in signing autographs, but they make that because people are willing to pay them to do so.  Your average person might see the social value in a teacher, but they aren’t ever going to line up to pay them $60 a pop.
However, it is both a moral and economic failing when a person can work 40 hours a week and not be able to pay for food, rent and health care.  I think that’s solvable.  I do not believe we can provide free health care, affordable housing, and free education just by taxing the billionaires.  I don’t think we get there by expanding that to those with $50 million in the bank, either.   The buy-in to truly provide a necessary standard of living for every person must come from those thus far not considered “part of the problem.”
If every person in this country could afford a clean and safe place to live, then I couldn’t care less how much money Jeff Bezos had.  If health care was a right and no one died because they couldn’t afford to see a doctor, then Robert Downey Jr should be able to make $100 million for a three-second cameo in Marvel’s Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man spinoff.  If anyone could pursue a college degree without concern for the cost, then I would fully support the Vice President of some consulting firm going to the club and expensing the bottle service and blow to the corporate card.
But to make those things a reality, we need to re-frame the question surrounding money.  We can’t just look at the billionaires as the problem, because then we’ll just be disappointed when taxing them doesn’t get us the things we need.  It’s great when Bill Gates comes around and asks to be taxed more.  But maybe your kid’s pediatrician needs to say that too. Maybe Ross from Friends should speak up about needing to pay more in taxes on the $20 million he earns each year just in residuals, both because its morally suspect to make that much money for not working, and because Ross was the absolute worst!
We chant “Tax the Rich!” in the streets and it sounds good.  But we do an awful job of defining “the rich.”  We need to significantly expand the definition to include those previous thought to be “one of us.”   For they are part of the problem, as good-intentioned as they may be.  And so am I.  I’m not rich in the slightest, but I do well enough to blow money on frivolous purchases here or there.  I’m not spending $1,500 on a handbag, but I’m sure I’ve dropped $100 on things I absolutely didn’t need.  I need to be taxed more, too.  And I’m willing if it’s to get my fellow citizen health care.  But I understand it’s a big lift to ask of people in my situation. They might have kids and expenses that make our lifestyles vastly different.   But we can agree on the top tax bracket.  Soak ‘em.

The Golden Rules for Booking Live Entertainment For Your Event
Booking Live Entertainment
The Golden Rules When Booking Live Entertainment for Your Event
Tips & Tricks For The Entertainment Buyer
Having worked as a professional magician and mind reader for the past sixteen years, I have seen hundreds if not thousands of venues all over the world. From Boston, where I am based, to Singapore, where I work for a few weeks once per year, and many cities and countries in between. A similarity that crosses all borders is the consistent lack of knowledge the client has when booking live entertainment. This is true for that of a variety type. (e.g magicians, jugglers, clowns, etc.).
Now this can be forgiven (to an extent), as most people have not booked live entertainment before and know absolutely nothing about how the process works. These individuals can be forgiven and kindly instructed by the performer on how the smooth the process can and should be. That said, when you as the entertainer are working through a seasoned booker (e.g someone who works for a company that plans all large and small functions), there is really no excuse for poor booking processes.
After speaking with several performer friends from all areas of entertainment, we have come up with a list of guidelines any future client should be at least familiar with before hiring professional entertainment.
When To Book Live Entertainment
So you want to hire some entertainment for your party, event, graduation, anniversary, etc. Whatever the case may be, you want to spice it up with something live and fun! First thing you should know is that performers of all varieties whether magicians, fire eaters or live bands, need time to prepare their shows. Most of us specially design our performances around your event, and this does take some time and will go into the price of the performance. You will want to give at least 3-4 weeks notice to a performer before booking. This is my suggested time frame for me, other performers require much earlier notice, and some can take an event with just a couple days notice. It depends on our schedules, current bookings and flexibility and of course, the performer himself (or herself). Our schedules are very strange, and totally non-traditional - we can have gigs at all hours of the day, night, and even into the very early mornings. Please Note: If you call a performer a day or two, or three, or even four before your event, they will most likely charge a little more for the short notice. It takes time to make your event special, whether by creating custom routines as I do, setting up a music set list, or getting required licenses or permits for more dangerous acts like fire eating and sideshow stunts.
What Are You Looking For
Hiring entertainment for your event can really enhance your guests' experience. Whether it's a live band, DJ, caricaturist, or magician, live performances create a truly unique experience that your guests will share with their friends and families when they leave. You want to determine what kind of entertainment best suits your particular event. For example: If you're getting married at a golf resort. With 200 guests and a traditional setup (cocktail hour, plated dinner, speeches, dancing, etc.), then you will want to determine where and when entertainment makes sense. If you're interested in magic or mind reading, which is very popular at weddings, then you would be best to place it into the cocktail reception for what is called "strolling" or "walk-around." This is where the performer wanders through your cocktail hour performing small, up close effects and routines for small groups of guests. This offers a personal experience you sometimes lose with a full length show. It also breaks up the occasional repetitiveness of such portions of the event. Magic, mind reading or a little light music can really make a difference. Have an idea of what you want, lay out your event, and see where it makes the most sense. Maybe a full length comedy mind reading show after a three day corporate retreat? Or perhaps you're celebrating your child's birthday and want some entertainment to keep all the little guests entertained? A children's magic and balloon show is a perfect fit here. Look into my other article on Magic & Mind Reading for Adults vs. Magic for Children, for more detailed information.
Determine Your Budget
This is by far one of the most important points a soon-to-be entertainment buyer must understand. It should be known that every performer, no matter what persuasion, charges differently. A fire eater will charge differently from a juggler or clown. A mentalist will charge differently from a magician or stilt walker. This is based on how they value their time and expertise.
Have at least a rough idea on what you're looking to spend on entertainment. Do not be afraid to ask a performer if he or she can work within your budget. Be realistic about it and think about your event and the kind of image that you want your guests to take home with them, and try to get a rough idea on what you would be willing to spend achieve that image. You will not insult us with your budget. We will just say no politely or even recommend someone who could better work within your financial parameters.
Entertainers usually know each other and bounce work around quite a bit. We almost always know what our friends and competitors charge. The more unique the performance style, the smaller number of performers. If you have $200 for a full length hypnosis performance, you may want to look into another form of entertainment. Most hypnotists don't leave home for less than triple that amount. If you have $5,000 for entertainment, then you're in a whole new bracket of entertainers. More on that later.
Details, Details, Details
Now you know what you want. The next thing to do is get your details together. These include the following in order of importance for the performer to know:
1. Date of the Event
2. Time You Want The Entertainer To Arrive & To Begin Performing
3. Type of Event (birthday, corporate lunch, trade show, etc.)
4. What You Want From The Entertainer in Detail
5. Budget!
6. How Many Guests You're Expecting
7. Description of the Venue (indoors, outdoors, theater style seating, tables, etc.)
8. Will There Be Other Entertainment (what kind, how long, etc.)
9. Have All Of Your Info Available (phone number, email, mailing address, etc.)
Having this information ready when you call an entertainer will make your booking process go much, much smoother and usually result in only one, maybe two phone calls or emails. Missing information does happen. Maybe you don't have your venue nailed down yet? No problem, try to give us a rough idea of where you're looking so we know how to prepare. If you're thinking a typically busy, dark restaurant but then go for a show at the beach, in the sun, with wind... This will be a little frustrating for the entertainer.
Know Your Venue
As stated above, the venue is very important. To most of us, we can perform practically anywhere (within reason). I've worked on moving boats, trains, and even on a private jet. Some of us who work with dangerous items, such as sword swallowers or fire breathers, require very specific environments in which to work safely for themselves and the guests in attendance.
Let's look at a few examples of common venue locations for a mentalist or magician:
1. The Country Club - always a popular location for a little walk around magic/mind reading or even a full length performance. Usually everyone is well-dressed, having formal meals, and looking for a more sophisticated form of entertainment. This is not the best place for a chainsaw juggler.
2. The Nightclub - usually dedicated to bachelor/bachelorette parties, adult birthdays, company buy-outs, holiday parties and practically any event you'd book to have some serious fun! Usually it is very loud, crowded, and drinks are flowing. This is not the best time to have a palm reader or full length magic show. Instead you could opt for some strolling entertainment, live music, or even a dance group.
3. Your Residence - Probably the most common location for family events, graduations, anniversaries and private holiday parties. You won't normally see a lot of craziness as you would in the nightclub. Such events are normally filled with family members, friends and children. Everyone knows each other, is very comfortable and is not scared of being a little silly from time to time. A great time for a hypnotist! Or even personal tarot readings. Definitely a great time for a mind reading performance.
The point is to use your venue to its absolute potential. Play out the scenario in your head with the entertainment you have in mind. If it seems like it could work, go for it. Chances are you're right!
Price Shopping
As performers we all work insanely hard to provide the absolute best entertainment for the best possible value. Our prices are all different, but with variations based on what we offer, where we live, how much equipment we have to transport, etc. Customers should know that there is A LOT more that goes into the booking on our end then you might think. This can include organizing our material, writing up contracts, invoices, and riders, getting to and from the gig; setting up; tearing down; packing at home; unpacking at home; re-setting our equipment; writing emails; making phone calls; updating schedules and social media; and more. What the customer sees is a small portion of the work performers do for a single booking. All of that goes into our fees as well. Please keep this in mind if you live in northern Maine and you really want the face painter from New Jersey at your party.
That said, price shopping does not mean you will get the best show for the lowest price. Also, the highest price artist out there is not necessarily better than the one who charges half or more less than that. Your selection should be based on recommendations, referrals, skill-set, and your budget. Not everyone can afford to book Aerosmith. For example; say you are hiring a children's magician for a birthday party. In New England, the rough booking fees range between $275 and $500 for an hour long show, with the ability to have add-ons like balloon animals, teach-a-trick, or magic goody bags. If you're getting offers at $100 or even Less! you should seriously consider what you're getting. Watch videos, call past clients, check the quality of their website, marketing materials, etc.. Do your homework! You wouldn't by 100 pairs of socks for $1.00 would you?
Referrals VS Resume
This can be a tricky section for a buyer. A lot of entertainers, especially when they're just starting out tend to fluff their resumes with big name clients to draw attention. In many cases they're not totally accurate. That doesn't mean they're not good performers, they're just trying to get some business. Then again, a lot of professionals out there have very thick resumes that are all 100% legit. You can usually tell from observation who's on the level and who isn't.
The best way you can make a decision is through referrals, testimonials, video demonstrations and reviews. Any magician or mentalist worth his salt will post a video of a portion of his show, as a teaser. This is the hardest hitting material that makes the audience go wild. I would be leery of a performer who didn't have at least some kind of video, even a poor-quality one. It's 2014 after all; most of us have cameras in our phones that shoot better than handheld cameras just a few years earlier.
I've found that the best way I book events is through word-of-mouth and my website with a link to my YouTube channel.
Actual VS Perceived Value
Like referrals vs. resume this can be a tricky section to explain correctly. As a quick definition, the actual value of a performer is connected to the following: his or her performance quality, attitude (courteous, respectful of clients needs, friendly without being annoyingly friendly or overly familiar, etc.), dress sense/style, and uniqueness of the performance. Now these are just examples and include quite a few other points that you'll notice after you hire entertainment. Notice how price was not a part of the actual value. The fee a performer requires for the event is based around the points I made above in point 6. You will not know the actual value of your performer until you've hired him or her to perform. Now, perceived value is what we do when we look at the artists' website, bio, pictures, videos, social media pages, etc. We determine if we like them within the first minute - or usually a lot sooner.
It should be known that the perceived value can absolutely work against you. There are performers out there who spend thousands of dollars on top quality websites, advertising materials, search engine optimization, and promotional videos, but when you see them live, you are quickly hit with just how bad they are. This happens quite a bit, especially amongst the younger generation of performers. Video editing software and the right person behind the keyboard can make anyone look amazing. Do not let the perceived value of a performer determine whether or not you want to book them. Use that information as a reference to what you can probably (not always) expect when the show begins. Focus on referrals, reviews (from real people), media write-ups, and recommendations from friends or family that may have booked entertainment in the past. The best advertising for a performer is word-of-mouth!
Free Work VS Donated Work
Ask any performer how many times they're offered "great publicity" in exchange for performing for free. It happens to all of us, a lot. I personally am asked to perform for free at least once a week. Nine times out ten I have to decline the event. Entertainers who are starting out may take the booking even though it doesn't pay. They're looking for "flight-time" or time in front of a real audience to practice, rehearse material and get comfortable in their field. This is perfectly acceptable and should be encouraged to young or new performers. However, a professional entertainer, be it a magician, mentalist, juggler or human blockhead, will probably not take a free show in exchange for an ad in the magazine, free publicity, or free food.
Almost all of us entertain as a full-time job. We work solely as performers and we expect to be paid for our time, just as you expect to be paid where you work. You will probably insult a performer if you offer publicity in exchange for money they'd use to pay bills and buy food. After all, you found us so the publicity is already working right?
Now when it comes to donated work, it's a much different story. At least for me. Please be aware I am not speaking for ALL performers working. Everyone is different and structures his business differently. Some performers will probably not agree with things in this article and it's totally fine! Donating our time to a cause is something in which a lot of us take great pride. Every year I donate at least 10 hours of performing to various charities around New England. These are ones that are very close to me, such as The American Cancer Society, Horizons for Homeless Children and The American Red Cross. I love giving my time to these organizations and being a small part of making a difference. We entertainers are all full of emotion and big hearts and we love to see the expression of happiness on people's faces who otherwise would be sad or in pain.
Be aware of your situation when offering an event to a performer for very little or no money. If it's a cause that we believe in and we can spare the time on our schedules, we will jump at the chance. If not, please do not take it personally and understand we need to work and earn as much as possible in order to keep providing entrainment to people around the world.
Contracts, Invoices, Agreements, Riders
The boring details of the booking process, lots of invoices, contracts and specifications that almost every performer requires are vital to the quality of the performance. Contracts are absolutely essential for a performer to have, and we will use them for the smallest to the largest event. Most of us have had the experience of "being burned" on bookings because we didn't have an agreement in place. We learn quickly (well most of us do) and adopt the contract policy to ALL bookings, even donated time bookings. Do not take offense if your children's magician requires a contract for his performance.
Most of us keep very detailed records of every gig we work. Invoices, contracts and emails are all essential pieces of material for our tax purposes, marketing strategies, and general peace of mind. I personally require a contract, invoice and performance rider for my shows. Most of the points in my agreements do not apply to every single show. However, a lot of the time they do. If we ask for a table or access to plugs, that the windows be closed, or that we're in the shade if outdoors, understand these are important factors that will go into the quality of our performances. We can usually perform in most places under most conditions, but some entertainers can not be indoors without proper licensing (such as people who work with fire or dangerous objects) or outdoors without a tent or waterproof area. Basically, it's common sense. The DJ you hired for your daughter's wedding will not want to work in the middle of the sun for five hours with hundreds of feet of extension cords running all over your event. Plan accordingly and your event will be a huge success!
Understanding What You're Paying For
I know I have covered this in earlier points but it is very important to understand what you're actually paying for when booking a performer. Remember we spend years and years perfecting our skills to make them look flawless when showtime comes. Some of us live far away from your venue and have to travel quite a distance to get to the gig. I personally drive about 35,000 miles a year just for performances, and fly about 40,000. We spend a lot of our time in airports, cars and traffic! Our fees are constructed by us based on what we believe our performances are worth. This includes the years of practice, travel to and from the event, all the work we do before the show itself, what kind of event it is, and how popular and in demand we are. Cheaper does NOT mean better!
Paying Your Entertainer(s)
I would say I've waited probably two years' worth of days on being paid for some events. That does not happen anymore. It is not acceptable to make a performer wait longer than the agreed upon time of payment. As I said before, we are full time entertainers and expect to be paid before or immediately after we perform. Our shows are all one-of-a-kind demonstrations and no show is the same (at least as a mentalist). So what you're getting is a totally unique experience. A good way of looking at it is this: If you worked for a week straight and your boss said "Sorry, but would it be okay if we paid you in three weeks for this week?" You would probably lose your sh*t. That is exactly how we feel when we have to wait for payment for our services. We arrived on time, performed, and were professional, and we expect to be paid accordingly.
It is customary to pay an entertainer prior to the start of the performance. Most of us require a deposit of some kind along with our contract or invoice signed. Those who don't require a deposit (well, they should) should be paid in full on the day of the event. Please be aware of this when hiring entertainment for your next party. Not only will your performer thank you kindly, he or she will be sure to make your event a huge success.
Tipping: Gratuity for a performer, DJ, or artist lets us know you really enjoyed our work. We do not factor gratuity into our fees (at least I and my friends don't) so any extra tip you have for us will be greatly appreciated. Don't be afraid of what to give for a tip - we are grateful you thought of it at all. Most people don't usually think to tip entertainment, so when it comes we are always very happy. This is especially important amongst entertainers you didn't book, like street performers and carnival or fair artists. Most of them accept tips and some get paid ONLY in tips. Keep that in mind after you watch the street performers in Fanueil Hall in Boston during the spring and summer months.

Hanyu Yuzuru - Starting from his face, Falling for his talent, Staying for his character
Note: This is a translation of an original article by Vogue China for their WeiXin/WeChat mobile platform. I’m quite surprised this actually made the cut, even if it’s just content for Vogue China’s mobile platform. What started as a Hanyu costume appreciation article quickly revealed its true form as a Hanyu appreciation post and the fangirling is anything but subtle. Not that I minded Ci The words in the brackets and the ~ are not my translator’s notes and personal input but are part of the original article. Captions for photos are in italics.

There are more pics and gifs there, the writer has definitely spent a lot of time and effort on this labor of love so do check it out. Even if you don’t understand Chinese, a picture speaks a thousand words, so let all the pics do all the talking for you.
Hanyu Yuzuru - Starting from his face, Falling for his talent, Staying for his character 始于颜值,陷于才华,忠于人品  (T/N: Describing the journey of most fans - you notice his good looks first, then you appreciate his talent and you stay as a fan/become a loyal fan due to his outstanding character)
"Blue roses do not exist, Hanyu as well, he gives an impression that he does not belong in this world", Japanese photographer Ninagawa Mika has said this of Hanyu Yuzuru. This youth who is already a legend at the tender age of 23, what other miracle-like surprises can he bring us?
Every year, the Japanese imperial family will host a spring garden party and invite outstanding personalities from all fields to view the flowers, converse, eat delicious food and listen to music at the Shinjuku Gyo-en.
This year, among the 1940 guests, one person’s arrival created a stir among the assembled ladies - he is 2 times Olympic champion Hanyu Yuzuru.
Just a few days ago. Hanyu Yuzuru held a celebratory parade in his hometown Sendai with over a hundred thousand people in attendance. This year, he was invited to the garden party (the last time was after he won in 2014), and even the princesses revealed that they had held hands together to cheer for him (insert fangirl heart eyes) ~
In this type of formal setting, female guests normally choose kimonos or suits while male guests usually appear in hakamas, suits or uniforms.
Tumblr media
Hanyu who has donned suits both times has said that he prefers a slim-cut which fits his body well. He might have said so, but perhaps Hanyu is too slender (actually his muscles are well-developed, and his body fat percentage is super low), it is hard for a run-of-the-mill suit to fit well on his body.
Tumblr media
Hanyu at last week’s parade. His suit might not be the best fit, but it is way better than his uncle suit from years ago~
Compared to the western suit, actually a traditional hakama suits Hanyu better, but this super low-profile Olympic champion really doesn’t have too many opportunities to show us~
Tumblr media
Hanyu’s first appearance in a hakama for a 2015 photo shoot
A earphone-maniac and game otaku, this prince-on-ice who exudes an ethereal aura doesn’t really care about fashion in his private style, basically he lives in sportswear.
Tumblr media
Sportswear can actually look so good ~~
He seldom does magazine photo shoots, after all he is not an idol or celebrity (but once he does, it’s a big production)
Tumblr media

However on the ice, Hanyu’s style is varying and elaborate, every costume can be said to be a piece of art. Asymmetrical designs, crystals, gradation, Japanese style, classic, lace…...a perfect combination of masculine heroic spirit and feminine softness and beauty.
Figure skating is about both athleticism and artistry, and as the ‘absolute champion’ of this sport,  Hanyu has already declared that he is one-of-a-kind just from his costumes.

The Olympic version where he passes his hand through his hair with shut eyes
We’ve already established that Hanyu is a ‘skating fairy’, Chopin is a program which best embodies his ethereal aura and elegance.
Tumblr media
After the end of the 2014 Olympic season, Chopin V1.0 made its debut. From the white to blue gradation, the rows of crystal embellishments and the flowy lantern sleeves, it creates the effect of a grand introduction and conclusion while on the ice, and reflects the leisure and calmness of this well-known piece of music.
Tumblr media

Tumblr media
Chopin V2.0
For Chopin V2.0 in the 2015 season, the color of the costume has changed from sapphire-blue to sky-blue, and gold elements have been added to the sleeves and waist. The belt is changed to gold as well (all of these reflecting the champion’s desire for gold).
Tumblr media
Olympic Chopin V3.0
For the Olympics season, the chosen blue shade is a deep sky-blue in between the colors of the previous versions. The gold elements are up-up-upgraded as well - gold crystals and pearls are added to the neckline and the colorful rhinestones on the gold belt are extremely shiny (yet very lowkey), a perfect complement to the rush of thick emotions and fanatical fervour of the ballade’s climax.
SEIMEI

The opening “ Guiding both heaven and earth onto the right path” action
Hanyu’s signature hydroblading move (Hanyu himself says his eyes here can kill~)
Among all of Hanyu’s programs, Seimei which was inspired by the movie Onmyouji is definitely the most famous.
Tumblr media
Seimei V1.0
At an ice show before the start of the 2015 season, Hanyu revealed this program for the first time. After being redesigned by designer Ito Satomi and Hanyu, the Heian-era karigime becomes a lighter, more convenient and fitting costume.
Still from the movie Onmyouji, played by Nomura Mansai
Kyogen stage actor Nomura Mansai who plays Seimei in the movie had a one-to-one exchange with Hanyu and gave him a lot of suggestions on the hand movements, rhythm control and character understanding. When the program was officially debuted in competition, we saw ‘Hanyu Seimei’ V2.0.
Tumblr media
The most obvious changes were that the shoulders and waist were looser so as to allow for easier movement. The light green ribbon ties on the sleeves are now bordered by grass-green. There is an additional mesh insert on both the front and back. More gold embellishments and green embroidery and rhinestones were added. And the black gloves - there are many hand movements when Seimei casts his spells and the contrast between the black gloves and white rink is more stark.
Tumblr media
Close up of V2.0 details. Intricate gold bead work, embroidery and rhinestones
During this Olympic season, V3.0 makes an appearance. A large portion of the bead work and embroidery is removed and replaced with crystal embellishment instead (3000 pieces were allegedly used). The main reason for this change is to lighten the weight of the costume so that it is easier to jump.
Tumblr media
Even the belt is changed to a gold color which looks more majestic and as per the old design, it is embellished with crystals of varying sizes. There is a slight change in the color of the costume as well; a touch of deep red is added to the purple while the lace ties becomes cyan/teal.
Tumblr media
The front, back, sleeves and even the lower part of the shirt is embroidered with an even more lavish golden phoenix design (all in all, the champion must be commanding + regal), at the back there’s even a signature Seimei ‘5 point star’.
Usually, skating to Japanese-style music is not favorable in international competitions, but this program has helped him broke the world record twice and win the Olympics again in 2018. Actually, just from the details on this costume, you can already see how much he has fine-tuned this program’s choreography.
LET'S GO CRAZY
— YUZURU'S COSTUME —
Tumblr media
Skating on bent knee while bending backwards
In all of Hanyu’s programs, Let’s Go Crazy (nicknamed ‘Go Crazy’ by fans) is the program which drives fans the most-most-most crazy. Basically every time you watch it, you get a nosebleed. All the lil actions woven in the program are designed to bedazzle and drive you crazy.
This is Prince’s famous song. In April 2016, the pop star passed away. Hanyu, who was then preparing for the new season, together with his choreographer decided to use this song as a tribute to Prince and came up with a crazy and bold program.
Tumblr media
Comparison of the LGC costume with Prince’s costume, Yuzu’s costume is actually slightly sheer
Tumblr media
The inspiration for the costume came from Prince’s concert. This song was in the album ‘Purple Rain’ so the costume was mainly in purple. The vest over the shirt and the standing collar were all references to the outfit worn in the MV. The bead work and sparkles on the vest were also designed based on the photos.
His hair was also styled differently from the usual, his hair was combed back in a style that reveals his forehead, which was rare. Actually his hairstyle was based on Japan’s ‘i-ta men’ style. This term originates from the samurai Date Masamune who lived during the Japanese warring period. He was brave and valiant and excellent in warfare, yet he dressed magnificently, so ‘i-ta men’ was used to describe such men. Later it evolved to describe playboy/dandy type of men.
NOTTE STELLATA
— YUZURU'S COSTUME —
The most beautiful moment
Tumblr media
His silhouette during the sit spin resembles a swan
Notte Stellata is an exhibition program which Hanyu used for 2 seasons. In Italian, Notte Stellata means ‘a sky full of stars’.
During the Great East Japan earthquake seven years ago, Hanyu was at the Sendai ice rink practicing and after escaping, he sought refuge at a school gymnasium for several days. There was no electricity in the entire city and only the stars in the sky shone brightly, planting seeds of hope in the youngster’s heart and hence this program came to be.
Tumblr media
Adorned with white feathers and featuring a daring off-shoulder design and deep V-cuts in both the front and the back, the costume has the grace and elegance of a swan; and the crystals scattered on the sleeves and the bodice are just like the stars in the sky.
Perhaps it is his perpetual youthful looks and his slender body frame, even in a design which seems feminine, Hanyu is able to make it his own. This is one of his special traits.
Actually most of Hanyu’s exhibition pieces revolve around a common theme - praying and wishing the best for the disaster area. Having ‘escaped’ after the earthquake, he has always felt that he has not done enough for the disaster area, so he has donated his bonus for winning the Olympics and the revenue from the sales of his autobiography and so on, and he has always tried his best to express these emotions during his exhibition skates.

So most of Hanyu’s costumes for his exhibitions are usually softer compared to his costumes for his competitions and are usually made of chiffon with pleating and floral decorative details. Under the dim lights on the ice rink during the exhibition, it is like a beacon of light, full of life.
HOPE & LEGACY
— YUZURU'S COSTUME —
The most beautiful moment
Tumblr media
Hanyu’s signature Ina Bauer
The Biellmann spin which usually can only be done by female skaters, it requires the body to be very flexible
This is the most emotive of all of Hanyu’s free skate programs and till today, it still holds the world record for the highest score for the free skate. Hope & Legacy is the theme song for the 1998 Nagano Paralympics and is composed by the famous Hisaishi Joe. And this year is exactly the year Hanyu started skating.
This program is like an exchange between Hanyu himself and the ice rink, Since he started skating at 4 years old, figure skating is almost his entire life. From longing to desire to adversity to fear and finally to the release of emotions and rapture, these were all showcased in a single breath.
Tumblr media
Just like the blue, green and white gradation signifies the the sky, the earth and the rink, everything is as natural as the floating clouds and flowing waters, and the scattered rhinestones are clustered even more closely than before, just like the shining marks that Hanyu has left behind in his journey.
It is indeed profound that after a mistake resulting in him in fifth place after the short program at the 2017 World championships, he went on to perform this free skate perfectly and broke the world record at 223.20 points, creating the impossible and aiding him in capturing the gold medal.
This costume actually has a ‘previous form’ six years ago. It was the season right after the 311 earthquake and the short program is titled Etude.
Tumblr media
To Hanyu, this is a costume which was in remembrance of the disaster, the many layers of blue are used to express the giant waves and the sea and to commemorate everything that was lost in the earthquake and the tsunami. At that time, he was only 17 and he could already deliver such a soulful performance.
THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA
— YUZURU'S COSTUME —
The most beautiful moment
Tumblr media
The hand movements depicting wearing and removing the mask
POTO is a classic song that has been used by many other figure skaters, yet Hanyu’s interpretation still manages to inject freshness.
The earliest version was pieced together from red, black and white fabrics in a asymmetrical fashion (the black part is openwork lace) and aptly fits the character who has lost himself in his obsession for his love and has the resplendence of the men’s court attire in the 19th century.
Tumblr media
However, this costume was sealed after just wearing it once; before the competition he collided heavily with another skater and sustained severe external and internal injuries and even had to have an operation. Hence this version of POTO was never seen again in competitions.
Tumblr media
The redesigned POTO costume went from figurative to an imagery style, the concept of the veined patterns are interlaced with the doomed love between the angel and the phantom, but the designs on the collar, the end of the sleeves and the waist still retains the elements of the Romanticism period.
PARISIENNE WALKWAYS
— YUZURU'S COSTUME —
Tumblr media
The opening brushing his hands-over-head and raising his leg teasing move
Tumblr media
The handsome side-lunge and point move
Fans call it the ‘Big Parisienne Saunter’ and it’s the program that has made many fall for him. Hanyu started using this short program since the 2012 season, and it is from this time that he started breaking all kinds of records, and it even became the first short program to ever break the hundred point barrier at the 2014 Sochi Olympics.
At first glance, it looks like a simple shirt + belt + pants combination, but actually the shirt is full of thoughtful details: the pleats on the front and back are adorned with sparkles, and in line with the blue and white color scheme which seems like the blue sky, the sparkles look like shiny stars hiding in the clouds, which perfectly matches the aura of the youth who had just turned legal.
Tumblr media
There’s a detail here, which is our ‘perfectionist’ Hanyu even had a matching bottle cover with his costume (it should be hand-made by Hanyu’s mum’s deft hands) ~
An elaborate figure skating costume can easily cost up to ten-thousands, Hanyu's costumes were initially designed and hand-made by his mother and subsequently he collaborated with designers Orihara Shizuko, Ito Satomi and famous figure skating veteran Johnny Weir. Every costume is worth to be admired and appreciated. Actually Japan is holding a Hanyu photo and costume exhibition, if you’re in town, why not go take a look?

For an Olympic gold medallist to have such high popularity, can it just be attributed to his appearance and the sport’s intrinsic entertainment value? To explain, we can probably use the well-known phrase “starting from his face, falling for his talent, staying for his character”.
2 times consecutive Olympics champion, 12 times world record breaker and the current record holder for the highest scores for the short program, the free skate and the combined scores, behind these hard facts are his perfectionism and determined performances.
“There is no meaning if you do not try your best at doing what can be done, this cannot be called ‘staking your life’.”
Every time before he goes on the ice, he’ll touch the ice as a sign of respect towards the sport
To clearly say “hate to lose” these three words, Hanyu seems like a high-spirited teenager. As long as it’s a silver, he will be super frustrated. He doesn’t just does highly difficult jumps, he combines them with difficult entries and exits to score the maximum GOE. His techniques in competition are clean, there are definitely no petty tricks. He has many injuries and his condition seems to fluctuate high and low but he has never faltered at the crucial timing. When some athletes choose to retire after becoming famous, he is still passionate about the sport and has declared that he wants to challenge the 4A and quintuple jumps…… Just as Hanyu himself said, “I have bet my entire life on skating”.
Just a strong determination is not enough, Hanyu’s brain can be said to not lose to his athletic ability. He is enrolled in Waseda University and is able to respond within seconds to change his jump layout to make up for lost points. He has produced his own ice show and his candid responses to tricky questions from reporters are all charming points both on and off the ice.
“I do not talk about who my rival is, I am my only rival”
“Although this is just my way of thinking, the ‘plus’ and ‘minus’ in life will balance out, and finally result in zero”
We hope that the name ‘Hanyu Yuzuru’ will live on forever and become a power of vision and a light of tenderness.

14 Zetta; 4 Zay
creating OCs ;; accepting | @america-redefined
>  zetta : If you had to narrow it down to 2 things that you MUST keep in mind while working with your OC, what would those things be?
it occurs to me i don’t know if this question is like, things for ME to keep in mind, or things for other people to keep in mind when working off of zetta. i’m going to assume this is from my side of things. hmmm
1. zetta ALWAYS has a lot going on in her mind, and 2. she is very firm about the lines she respects even when she’s at her most volatile
1 is important because i need to be able to track her thought patterns in order to really be able to map where her reactions are coming from. part of zetta’s high iq manifests in just how goddamn fast she thinks, and how many things she’s considering at the same time. spoilers: yeah, it’s a lot. and as a result, she’s not always reacting to the obvious thing. and because of her “translate most emotions into anger” thing, it means she’s not always mad about what she’s actually arguing about. it makes things complicated, but it’s core to her character
2 is important because it’s core to her beliefs. she is absolutely adamant about not becoming her mother, and this is the way she keeps herself on the right side of that line. no matter how angry she gets, or how much she wants to lash out, there is always a point where it’s too far. there is always shit that is off limits. and it’s what ultimately keeps her from being abusive with her anger, which is fundamentally important to her character, because i do not want her to fall into the “all anger is bad and poisonous” trope
>  xavier : In developing their backstory, what elements of the world they live in played the most influential parts?
the biggest thing i focused on when i was shaping zay’s mindset was the era he grew up in
zay is about in his mid 50s, putting him just about in shaun’s age bracket. i did this for a reason — while we see a few older members in the institute who might be shaun’s contemporaries or close to it, we don’t get to learn about what the institute was like before the gen 3 project took off, or how the gen 3 project’s development affected the mindsets of the people within the institute, or anything about what it was like for shaun’s generation
for the most part, zay is a “standalone” type of personality, where nature had a stronger influence on him than nurture. even if zay had been born and raised on the surface, he would still be prickly, judgmental, independent, sharp-tongued, and highly private to the point of reclusiveness. these things form the foundation of who he is, and he’s going to be like that in just about any environment, regardless of the outside influences
but i also wanted to use zay to approach and explore the average institute scientist’s perception of synths. like… the institute’s practice of keeping sentient synths as slaves is extremely new. it hasn’t even been a full generation. someone like zay, who would’ve grown up alongside shaun, would have watched the project develop and come to fruition. his earliest and most formative experiences with synths still would’ve been with gen 1s and 2s, and he would end up seeing the mechanical side of things, and so… he would legitimately have trouble seeing past “that is a robot. we made that in a lab. they had a lot of glitches early on. you should have watched them walk into walls. we worked out the bugs, but that doesn’t magically make them human”

The difference between ‘rich’ and ‘wealthy,’ according to New York Times ‘Wealth Matters’ columnist
EARNING
The difference between ‘rich’ and ‘wealthy,’ according to New York Times ‘Wealth Matters’ columnist
Tumblr media
Hedge-funders “make a ton of money but they may also be highly leveraged,” so “life is going to make choices for them.”
When Paul Sullivan was hired to write his “Wealth Matters” column in The New York Times 13 years ago, Americans’ relationships with wealth and wealthy people were undergoing a rapid shift.
“When I interviewed for the job in 2008, it was the day Bear Stearns collapsed. I was told I could create the ‘Wealth Matters’ column when Lehman Brothers collapsed,” he says. “My first column ran the weekend that Bernie Madoff was being hauled out of his Park Avenue apartment.”
Between then and the publication of his final column this October, Sullivan established what investors might call a robust track record of cataloging the shifting attitudes surrounding what it means to be wealthy in this country. Grow caught up with Sullivan as he embarks on his next project — The Company of Dads, an online community for fathers taking on lead parenting duties — to discuss what it truly means to be wealthy, the money habits of the rich and fabulous, and which billionaire excess is worth the money.
Among his biggest takeaways: “I always drew the line between people who are wealthy and people who are rich,” he says.
You can be wealthy ‘whether you’re a schoolteacher or a billionaire’
To the frustration of some of his readers, Sullivan came to define wealth not as a dollar figure but in terms of what your savings allow you to do. “The people that I consider wealthy — whether you’re a schoolteacher or a billionaire — are the people who, when they want to do X, they can do it,” he says. He pointed to billionaire businessman Jon Huntsman, whose corporation invented, among other things, the plastic clamshell containers that Big Macs used to come in, as well as to his own aunt, a retired schoolteacher whose savings allow her to buy whatever she wants for herself and to travel to visit family whenever she pleases.
On the rich-but-not-wealthy side of the equation, Sullivan says you’re likely to find plenty of hedge fund managers. “They make a ton of money, but they may also be highly leveraged,” he says, meaning that much of their money on paper may come from investing borrowed money.
Lack of control over their own financial decision-making is a key indicator that they’re not, in fact, wealthy, he adds: “Life is going to make choices for them.”
The billionaire excess worth splurging on, in his opinion? Flying private
The bulk of Sullivan’s columns either focused on financial news that folks in high tax brackets could use or money lessons from the megarich that middle-class folks could put to good use. But a third genre of Sullivan’s story, one he calls “voyeuristic,” got him up close and personal with the eye-poppingly expensive hobbies of the 1%.
In a world of five-figure workout regimens and private sportscar racing clubs, one indulgence stood out for Sullivan as absolutely worth the money (if you have it). “The only one I would 100% want to do and that I dream about is to fly private,” he says. “It’s so stinkin’ expensive, but I did this story at the Gulfstream factory. I wasn’t even going anywhere. I went to Savannah, turned around, and came home. It was awesome.”
Sullivan didn’t elaborate as to whether he’d want to actually own a jet, though his reporting on the matter indicates that cost-conscious billionaires fly charter.
It’s hard to justify the cost and labor that go into the rest of the rich-guy hobbies, though, if you’re not passionate about them, Sullivan says. “I talked with Stuart Sternberg, who went from working at Goldman Sachs to owning the Tampa Bay Rays, and you think, ‘That must be great.’ But there’s so much involved in owning a team.”
“It takes some of the romance out of it,” he adds. “Even the guys with the huge yachts. Unless they’re super wealthy, they were trying to charter it out, making sure they had the right crew. I think, instead of a 300-foot yacht, I’d rather have a friend with a 300-foot yacht.”
The No. 1 money habit of wealthy people
Over the course of his tenure writing the column, Sullivan talked to nearly 5,000 sources about wealth in America. Unsurprisingly, his No. 1 piece of advice from this pool of collective money wisdom boils down to a rather simple idea. “Have a plan. Write everything down,” Sullivan says.
“As simple as it sounds, it’s important to know how much I’m making, how much I’m saving, how much the house costs,” he points out. “It’s a tedious exercise, but people are always shocked.”
That isn’t to suggest that the likes of Mark Cuban and Jeff Bezos are donning a little green visor and getting a piece of graph paper out to crunch the numbers. “Super wealthy people have someone writing it down for them,” Sullivan says. “But they read it. The wealthiest and most successful people have a plan. And it’s not necessarily rigid. They’re regularly looking at it, revising it, and they know where they stand.”
By writing everything down, Sullivan says, you can establish the beginnings of what he calls a “locus of control” — an intentionality around money that is common among people who have the wealth to freely spend on the things that they want.
“Taking a nuts and bolts approach to your money is a pretty good indicator that someone is going to be successful,” Sullivan says. “If you know how much you earn, what you need to live on, and where your money is going, you have a foundation on which to build your financial future.”
