May 3, 1988, Queensrÿche released their quintessential album, OPERATION MINDCRIME. Geoff Tate came up with the "revolutionary" idea when the opening chords of the title track found their way into his conscience while sitting alone in a church in Montreal. The inspiration for Mary's character came later when he witnessed a sad-looking girl in Amsterdam clutching a teddy bear and dancing by herself in a nun's costume. With the help of Chris DeGarmo, the band took those ideas and produced one of the greatest concept albums ever written, and like it or not, it became the benchmark against which their entire body of work would forever be compared. The album was certified gold a year after its release, and eventually went platinum in 1991. Revo-lution!

Can you share a fic idea you have in your head that you 100% know you’ll never write? Why won’t you write it?

Finally getting to this ask after far too long. Sorry for the wait!

Honestly, I can't think of any fic ideas where I'm 100% not going to write it. Chances are, if I've thought it up, I'm open to writing it. The only thing off-limits for me is unhappy endings, and chances are, if the idea appeals, I can figure out how to twist it into a happy ending.

An example (I'm sorry, I know you don't follow this fandom, but I have no Rumbelle examples because I want to write them ALL): I want to write a Hellcheer AU of the Queensryche concept album, Operation: Mindcrime where Eddie plays the part of Nicki, and Chrissy plays the part of Sister Mary. Now, this story does NOT end happily for Nicki OR Sister Mary (I'm JUST going by the original, not the sequel). Specifically, the problem is that Nicki is too confrontational. His desire to confront the man who's been manipulating him is what leads to his and Mary's downfall.

But Eddie? Eddie RUNS. And I could work that in my favor. If he just took Chrissy's hand and RAN, fled the city, things could turn out differently. Not only does that give me the happy ending I want, it also rings true to Eddie's character. This comes at the price of not being able to write basically all my favorite songs off the album (Electric Requiem grabbed me by the THROAT the first time I heard it walking home from work at night), which is unfortunate. But it would also allow me the ability to mirror canon in some unique ways: having Eddie wanted for murder, needing to come to terms with his "cowardice" when really he ran from something he had no hope of taking on.

All of this is a roundabout way of saying that there are no off-limits fics for me. If there's something about a story I don't think I could write, I'll work around it. The only story I won't write is one that bores me.
