[The first time I paged through Volo’s Guide to Monsters, I thought grungs were original to that book. They’re not, but fairly obscure by its standards. They first appeared in the late AD&D 1e Greyhawk Adventures, with a handful of Greyhawk appearances in 2e and nothing in 3rd or 4th Edition. Chris Lindsay is one of the 5e designers and the self-proclaimed head of the “grung preservation society”, so he rescued these from the vault of forgotten monsters.
The original grung wasn’t very interesting, which is probably why it didn’t travel far beyond Greyhawk. It’s basically a smaller, venomous bullywug. Giving them a color based caste system and variable venom is all 5e, and it’s certainly enough to make them stand out. Interestingly, although their initial Volo appearance paints them as decidedly evil, in later works sympathetic grung characters appear, and they turn up in activity pages for children’s books sold for charity. Like Pathfinder and its goblins, it’s hard to keep something evil and cute strictly evil and cute, I guess.]
Grung CR 1 LE Humanoid (grippli) This brightly colored humanoid frog is covered with blotches and spots. Its head is oversized in proportion to its body.
Grungs are small batrachian humanoids. They are brightly colored, resembling anthropomorphic poison dart frogs. This coloration defines the grung’s role in the species caste system. Green grungs are laborers, hunters and warriors, whereas blue grungs are artisans and crafters. Purple grungs act in administrative and management positions, and they report to orange grungs, which are the equivalent of nobility. Red grungs are scholars and spellcasters, and the rare gold grungs are rulers of their tribes. Although these colors are genetically determined, color changes and the resultant change in status can be bestowed through ritual magic and the use of particular drugs. Grungs advance by character level, with fighter and ranger being common in most castes, druid or sorcerer common among red grungs, and gold grungs often taking levels in bard or skald.
Most grungs are evil in alignment, enjoying their mastery of poisons to addle minds and weaken bodies. Those that are not tend towards lawful alignments, as they natural sort people and creatures into neat, orderly categories. Ambiguity disturbs grungs, and they distrust lateral thinking, gender fluidity and other signs of flexibility. Grungs fight to defend themselves and to take slaves. Grungs enjoy bossing around creatures larger than they are, and use their slaves as test subjects for new poisons they brew as well as putting them to more traditional hard labor.  A grung settlement is built around one or more sources of water—rivers, ponds and hollow trees are all common—in which adults soak themselves to rest daily and eggs are laid and tadpoles raised. Grungs are primarily carnivorous with a diet of small game—insects and other arthropods, small mammals and birds provide most of their calories. Their rituals and ceremonies usually involve the consumption of poison dart frogs, manchineel and akee fruits, or other intensely toxic materials.
Grungs and grippli are related, but the exact relationship is obscure, and the two species do not get along. A grung stands between two and a half and three and a half feet tall and is venerable by 50 years of age.

Grung Poison—contact; save Fort DC 13; duration 1/round for 10 rounds; effect sickened 1 round and special; cure 1 save. A creature that is afflicted with grung poison is sickened and suffers from the following compulsion, based on the grung’s color: Green: Cannot walk or fly; must jump or climb in order to move Blue: Must shout loudly every round Purple: Must soak self in liquid (water, mud, etc.) and is nauseated if not soaked Red: Must eat food if at hand and must find food if not eating Orange: Cannot cooperate with allies; cannot flank with them, give or receive aid another attempts or other skill check assistance, makes attacks of opportunity against them and must be hit with touch attacks. Must save against harmless spells cast by allies Gold: Must obey the first command given by a grung, equivalent to a suggestion spell (CL 2nd). The save DC is Constitution based. Poison Use (Ex) A grung can apply poison to a weapon as a move action at no risk of wasting a dose or poisoning itself. It may apply its skin poison to a weapon as a swift action. Goblin Color Variation
(Previous post on some basic anatomy things. Next post on goblin evolution and development)
My laptop is struggling but sometimes its nice to me long enough to get stuff done. Golly I can't wait for that new one.
Anyway, I made a bunch of goblin color variations just to show some of my thought process in designing individual goblins. These are all possible goblin skin patterns based on mixes of real amphibians, picking from different regions on earth. The fantasy world I've built is like earth-adjacent so it has similar continents, but I havent really named the countries yet so I default to real world names when I describe where these regional variations of goblins might be from. They're very generalized, but of course its pretty easy to get super specific too. And sometimes I just make up the coloration without any references to specific animals.

and since a full detailed description is gonna require multiple paragraphs I am actually gonna go ahead and put the rest of this under a cut:
1: western europe. I combined the green tree frog coloration with the white belly and brown stripes and spots of the common european frog . They have bumpy skin, the brown and pale tan eyes of the common frog, ears like a long-eared bat, and barbels like a wels catfish: two long ones on the cheeks and four shorter ones spread along the chin.
2: southeast asia. They have white skin with gradient patches of bright coral orange, all surrounded by thick black markings on the face and body, like a Luristan newt. Their eyes are black with four yellow patches around the pupil like a bubble nest frog. Their ears resemble those of a Himalayan leaf-nosed bat, and they have the shorter barbels of a koi fish, two on each side of the jaw.
3: central Africa. They have the pale yellow to orange belly patch of an african bullfrog, with olive green speckles fading to the bumpy olive green skin on the sides. Their eyes are also from the African bullfrog, with beige on most of the iris and dark brown corners. Their skin fades into a dark grey on the top of the head and sides of the body, and they have multiple large yellow spots, inspired by the yellow spotted newt. Their ears are like those of a hammerhead fruit bat, and they have barbels like an african lungfish, three at each cheek and two on the chin.
4: far north america. This one is more specific, having the gradient of reddish brown to beige skin, reddish brown speckles faded between, and dark brown eye stripe of the Alaskan wood frog, with matching brown striped eyes. They have the ears of a little brown bat, and barbels like a channel catfish, two long ones at the cheeks and four smaller ones at the chin.
5: north america. From the top of their head to their eyes, they have the light brown skin of a pickerel frog, darker brown stripes and patches across the head and shoulders as well as coming off the matching brown striped eyes. From the eyes down, they have the green skin and yellow belly of an american bullfrog. Their ears match the northern long eared bat, and they have the barbels of a bullhead catfish, having two long ones at the cheeks, four short ones at the chin, and two more short ones higher on the cheeks.
6: central america. Mostly this goblin resembles a mexican burrowing tree frog, with brown skin and a dark reddish brown eye stripe with a bright green stripe below the eye. But their belly is pale and their skin fades to a light teal with pale yellow spots at the top of the head and along their back, to resemble the waxy leaf frog. Their eyes are also from the waxy leaf frog, being very dark grey with lots of tiny pale yellow streaks. Their ears are like the mexican fishing bat, and they have barbels like a red tailed catfish, two long ones at the cheeks and four medium length ones at the chin.
7: south America. They have the veye bumpy and mottled green, yellow, orange skin of a pacman frog, with several uneven dark brown stripes all over their head. Their eyes are white with black crackle lines, like the eyes of a glass frog. At their neck, thei skin coloration changes to bright yellow with a couple thick black stripes like a common amazonian poison frog. They have ears like a vampire bat and barbels like a piraiba, two very long barbels at the cheeks and four medium length barbels spread out over the chin. They are the only one without eyebrow whiskers because they have the tall triangular eyebrow ridges of the pacman frog.

I was play Dark Souls 1 yesterday with my sister’s boyfriend and my friend Lexnn watching. I’m sucking ass. I’m getting pushed off or cliff by diseased Goblinoids. But like always I’m a good sport. I’m having a good time swinging my big sword and getting AUTO TOXIC’d by those shit eating bucket wearing clowns. My duo person audience was entertained. Good.
I finally chop my way through buttcrack club wielding fuckbois and their blood bug pets. I’m at the bottom of Blight Town. First time I’ve been here and I lost my mother fucking shit at the TRADE MARK FROMSOFT POISON SWAMP. Gross, but I’m killed with my 10 Estus. NPC man eating invader? No problem. Toddle my way to a secret area. I see a jumping puzzle. Fuck that. Mistakenly, my hallowed ass finds the Boss room, but not before top hat McPvP build smears his oiled chest grease all over my screen. Out of Estus and too prideful to let this Bloodborne cosplaying mother fucker kill me, I enter the boss room thinking I can quickly put on a ring or sacrifice.
No.
This Bitch leaps across the room and ends me. Shit. 14K souls and 4 humanity stuck at the front of a Boss room. Obviously it’d be easy just to go back with a ring on, pick them up and keep combing the POISON SWAMP™️ for items.
Yeah that would have been the more surgical way to do it. But my dumbass didn’t want to die twice to the “Beware of nice chest ahead” Boss in front of two people.
No no noooo. I came back up at the root bonfire because like a plebeian, I forgot to rest at the on closer to the Boss. I’m out of MOSS so why not just shit my pants and JUMP DOWN THIS HARMLESS LOOKING ROOY SYSTEM.
Well it was easy enough. I’m not new to the jank jumping in Adult Zelda. I get to what I think is the bottom until I se a ladder between some webs. My mind was too busy calculating how next to jump when... 7 THOUSAND shit eating basilisks jump out of the webs and spray me with their charcoal colored PISS.
Stoned, but not in the cool way. My ass is grass and the two dudes around me just start cracking up as I come to the slow realization that
CURSE PERSISTS THROUGH DEATH. What follows is a string of profanities that would make a good Mormon’s ears turn to dust.
Now I’m stuck here in this FUCK PIT. Forced to be hallow and half health. No purging stones and no idea how to get up. But I had to get my souls back, obviously. This time I was ready and one by one, all one million frog wretches fell. Rad. But where did the ladder lead?
I jump down, get hidden items that caught my eye on some branches. More climbing down...
“The fuck are those!?”
Something I say a lot while playing Souls games first time. Mushroom men. Slow, idiot anthro fungus. OBVIOUSLY harmless. The little ones went down like nothing. The big ones couldn’t be that bad. To be extra safe I climb up on a ledge and ready a plunging attack. I’m out of Estus. My already halted health is half from jumping. But whatever. I’m not afraid. I haven’t spent nearly 600 hours combine on DS3 and Bloodborne to be a pussy bitch about some abnormally obese mushroom men. I leap of the ledge, my glorious big sword singing, oaken hair flowing in the wind.
This fucker... this MUSHROOM CUCK SLAPS me out of the air and the last of my health is gone.
Is 3K souls worth going back? HELL NO. It was time to leave. Without the ability to kindle and at half health, there was no way.
“Fuck this.” I grunt and trudge my way back to the goblin tree house only to be met with insta death from ass crack warriors more than happy to take advantage of my gimped health. That’s when I realized... there were no ladders back up.
Furiously I rush to the Boss to try and escape.
She pummels me.
Fuck.
I’m panicking at this point. Is there really no way out and no one here who sells purging stones!? I contact my friend Ben, husband of my first wife @everplague and local Semi-professional Dark Souls player.
“Yeah man there is a lift here is a video.”
Son of a fucking bitch. Fuming, I take the lift. I cut through more HIDEOUS insects and collect some more items. I roll past the fatty club wielders and find myself in New Londo. I go through a door after bullying some pathetic hallows praying to a pot— as if that could save them from HALF HEALTH HELL.
I turn the corner. The Firelink Shrine music starts to play. Are these... tears in my eyes? I’m free, I’m safe! All that stands between me and revenge against that spider bitch is a purging stone!
I run like I’ve just been introduced to fields of flowers for the first time all the way to my favorite moss vendor. She welcomes me back genuinely, gracious enough to have personally peeled moss for ME.
I scroll down her list of goods until I find the beautiful stone I need.
Six... THOUSAND souls. I shake out my wallet and one thousand fall out. I feel my face contort in a mix of anger and grief. No... NO.
But I’m tenacious... Dark Souls has taught me to never give up and keep going. Okay. Just farm the dumb knife hallows and dogs. That’s easy. It’ll take a while but—
Oh? I died? To a fucking dog? No problem. Even if I only have 300 health I’m not a coward. As long as I don’t die to anything stupid I can get my souls back no proble—
These damn dogs that move faster than an F150 driven by an old, white republican on the highway slam in to me not even half way through and destroy my ass. A collected 4K souls down the drain.
Silently, I slam the windows key on my keyboard and manually exit out of Dark Souls.
“Goodnight guys. I need to work tomorrow.”
Let this be a lesson. Don’t forget your moss and purging stones. Come prepared like a good undead boyscout.
