Never date a guy who likes V8
Never date a guy whose jeans don’t cover his ankles
Never date a girl who feels the need to make her butt a billboard
Never date a guy who wears loafers
Never date anyone you haven’t seen play sports
Never, ever date a guy who acts like he’s playing in the finals of a professional sporting event when he’s really playing a pickup game.

Established Characters: To change or not to change?
Sometimes... it is very hard to pick a side when you’re caught between ethics like a rock and a hard place.
When it came to colour/gender/race/religion/orientation/etc.-swapping characters, I went from being “it’s never ok”, to “it’s sometimes ok” and now... I don’t know anymore. I’ve seen it done wrong, I’ve seen done right and I’ve seen be only what you make of it. And note that this has nothing to do with creating new characters who aren’t straight white Christian males, passing mantles onto new characters who aren’t straight white Christian males, giving existing characters who aren’t straight white Christian males their time to shine or alternate universes which characters are a little different from their iconic versions.
I’m talking about changing established A-list characters in such a way where it changes everything. It is a topic that brings me a lot more sadness than I thought it would because it is so much more complicated than it sounds. The struggles of the LGBT+ community, the black community, the Muslim community and any minority community have broken my heart to the point where I cried while watching the news. I want them to be included and represented because everyone matters.
The complicated part is that I’m also an artist who believes a character is a work of art and while I get that they undergo character development that may change them a little organically, having something like their colour, their religion, their orientation, their gender or something like that changed is not a small thing because none of those things are small things. If they were, people on both sides of the fence wouldn’t care so much about them and care about characters having the traits they have. And for the record, I think it is ok and even good to care to an extent because it shows you love yourself and think characters like you are worthy of love.
Now, it is not up to me to judge on what is ok to change, who may be changed and how. I don’t even own other people’s characters. I just want to be sensitive because I myself am a sensitive person with lots of love to give and give support to my fellow person whoever they are. And I think comics should represent everyone because everyone reads them. And everyone needs a hero.
But my end all answer to the question; do I think it is ok to change established characters? I don’t know. I’ve never done it and it has yet to be done to my characters. Maybe that’s why I don’t have answer.
