U.S. President Joe Biden on Tuesday will honor Emmett Till, the Black teenager whose 1955 killing helped galvanize the Civil Rights movement, and his mother with a national monument across two states.
Till, 14 and visiting from Chicago, was beaten, shot and mutilated in Money, Mississippi, on Aug. 28, 1955, four days after a 21-year-old white woman accused him of whistling at her. His body was dumped in a river.
The violent killing put a spotlight on the U.S. civil rights cause after his mother, Mamie Till-Bradley, held an open-casket funeral and a photo of her son's badly disfigured body appeared in Black media.
The national monument designation across 5.7 acres (2.3 hectares) and three sites marks a forceful new effort by the President to memorialize the country's bloody racial history even as Republicans in some states push limits on how that past is taught.
"America is changing, America is making progress," said the Rev. Wheeler Parker Jr., 84, a cousin of Till's who was with the boy on the night he was abducted at gunpoint from the relatives' house they were staying at in Mississippi.
"I've seen a lot of changes over the years and I try to tell young people that they happen, but they happen very slow," Parker said on Monday in a telephone interview as he traveled from Chicago to Washington to attend the signing ceremony at the White House as one of approximately 60 guests.
Tuesday marks the 82nd anniversary of Till's birth in 1941. One of the monument sites is the Roberts Temple Church of God in Christ in Chicago, where Till's funeral took place.
The other selected sites are in Mississippi: Graball Landing, close to where Till's body is believed to be have been recovered; and Tallahatchie County Second District Courthouse, where two white men who later confessed to Till's killing were acquitted by an all-white jury.
Signs erected at Graball Landing since 2008 to commemorate Till's killing have been repeatedly defaced by gunfire.
Now that site and the others will be considered federal property, receiving about $180,000 a year in funding from the National Park Service. Any future vandalism would be investigated by federal law enforcement rather than local police, according to Patrick Weems, executive director of the Emmett Till Interpretive Center in Sumner, Mississippi.
Other such monuments include the Grand Canyon, Statue of Liberty and the laboratory of inventor Thomas Edison.
Biden, an 80-year-old Democrat, will likely need strong support from Black voters to secure a second term in the 2024 presidential election.
He screened a film recounting the lynching, "Till," at the White House in February. Last March, he signed into law a bipartisan bill named for Till that for the first time made lynching a federal hate crime.
A Republican field led by former President Donald Trump has made conservative views on race and other contentious issues of history a part of their platform, including banning books and fighting efforts to teach school children accounts of the country's past that they regard as ideologically inflected or unpatriotic.
"This is an amazing, teachable moment to talk about the importance of this story as an American story that everybody can share in now, particularly at a time when people are trying to rewrite history," said Christopher Benson, president of the non-profit organization the Emmett Till & Mamie Till-Mobley Institute in Summit, Illinois.
“We have a memorial now that is not erasable. It can't be banned and it can't be censored, and we think that's a very important thing.”

PRESS BRIEFING BY IDF SPOKESPERSON, REAR ADMIRAL DANIEL HAGARI
"Good evening. Tomorrow we will gather with our loved ones and celebrate the Passover Seder. A moment before the holiday that marks freedom, it is impossible not to think about those whose freedom was taken from them in an immensely cruel way. Passover will mark 200 days of the very real and painful absence of the hostages. Our moral obligation to return the 133 hostages and release them to freedom takes on an additional meaning today. If the hostages hear us, I turn to you now - we will fight until you return home to us. Dear families of the hostages, we know that these are unbearable days for you and we promise that we will do everything, everything to return your loved ones.
IDF forces are deployed along the entire length of the borders of the State of Israel to ensure the safety of the citizens of the State of Israel. Even during the holiday, we must continue to be vigilant and adhere the Home Front Command instructions. The instructions remain unchanged. If there are any changes, we will inform you immediately, responsibly and transparently. At the front of our minds, is the security of our citizens.
This week, In Gaza, we completed another operation in the central Gaza Strip against Hamas to destroy terrorist infrastructure and terrorists in order to prevent Hamas from restoring its capabilities. All the while there are forces operating inside Gaza alongside additional forces preparing for the next moves in the war. Today, the Chief of the General Staff was at the Southern Command and approved the next moves in the war.
This week, on the northern border, we struck targets of the Hezbollah terrorist organization, including aerial defense array infrastructure deep inside Lebanon. We are aware of the great difficulty endured by the residents of the north who have been away from their homes for such a long time. We are determined to continue to target Hezbollah, to push it to the north and to create a security reality that will allow the residents of the north to return to their homes safely.
In Judea and Samaria, IDF, ISA and Israel Border Police soldiers completed a counter-terrorism operation in the Tulkarm area in which we eliminated terrorists, apprehended suspects, destroyed explosive production laboratories, and confiscated many weapons. IDF forces continue to operate in Judea and Samaria around the clock to counter terrorism and protect the roads. We are strengthening the defense before and during the holiday.
Many regular and reserve IDF soldiers will celebrate the holiday when they are far from home, but they will celebrate the Seder together. I would like to thank and express such great appreciation to all the families of the reserve and career personnel, for the support which they receive at home, this support is very important to us. In the last few days, we have completed the preparations for the holiday and all the soldiers in the field will be served a warm and proper holiday meal.
We do not forget those who are not with us tonight after they fought and fell on the battlefield. Dear bereaved families, on the eve of the holiday like every other day of the year, the pain is too much to bear, your loved one who sacrificed the most precious of all did it so that we could live here, we do not forget and will not forget, we are together with you."

Because many people kept asking about the photo, I decided to do the post about Ice-pick Lodge and Pathologic on KRI-2005
Ice-pick Lodge (Nikolai Dybowski, Petr Potapov, Airat Zakirov, etc.) went on the KRI-2005 (Game Devs conference) to give presentation about first Pathologic game.
Here are some photos, and the info from their site will be under the cut:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
! All following info are from their site. Nothing is changed.
The day before March 31, 2005.
Due to the most recent events, we are severely short on human resources.
After spending four and a half hours gathering the most necessary medical tools and supplies, we piled into an ambulance and set off. A crucial task lay ahead: to select a suitable location for the secret anti-infectious laboratory.
The famous doctor-epidemiologist, doctor of medical sciences, professor of the department of lethal fevers of the state medical school Pestitsky Innokenty Savvovich comprehensively studied the epidemiological situation in the city. Having thoroughly considered all possible options, the professor opted for the famous hotel "Cosmos".
Honorable Innokenty Savvovich confirmed that in the next three days the presence of leading epidemiologists, sanitarians and attending physicians was necessary here.
As usual, equipment, service personnel and specialists (including Innokenty Savvovich himself) were brought to the meeting place through the basement. In the same way, shortly before, materials were obtained from a certain studio Ice-pick Lodge, which, according to rumors, is engaged in the development of computer games.
The location of the secret laboratory was marked with portraits of the protagonists of the simulator of human behavior in an extreme situation. The simulator was given a catchy, spectacular name - "Pathologic (Mor. Utopia)". Unusual, and on the ear.
We were not alone in the basement. We watched a strict bearded man in a yellow T-shirt carrying tanks with kvass past the future laboratory. We decided to be sure to inspect it for symptoms of Febris sebulosae infestation.
The production of kvass requires water, and most local sources, according to Professor Pestitsky, are in critical proximity to the burial fields of the results of last year's experiments of the laboratory.
Tomorrow, don't forget - ampoules for injections, sedatives, bandages, and spare shirts just in case.
Day 1 01.04.2005.
10:00
The situation is critical. There's a whole exhibition here. Dr. Pestitsky suspects that the territory of the neighboring stand (and maybe the whole complex) is hopelessly contaminated! We are conducting research: we have taken samples of air and water from local sources.
We are waiting for the results of the analysis. The professor's appointment is scheduled for 12:00.
It is surprising that potential patients themselves turn to the professor. Instead of the usual search and forced delivery of patients in need of examination, our orderlies have to guard the territory of the laboratory from unauthorized entry.
11:00
The results of air and water samples show the undoubted presence of the virus (in our laboratory it is called Febris sebullosa).
It is necessary to conduct a general inspection and comprehensive examination of visitors to detect symptoms of infection.
It was decided to declare a quarantine.
The decision to completely sanitize the premises, according to the expert committee of epidemiologists, is premature, but is not ruled out.
12:00
The examination of visitors has begun. The professor and the nurse are working in protective suits, masks and gloves.
At the same time they started the presentation of the simulator of human behavior in the situation of epidemic "Pathologic (Mor. Utopia)".
Detailed familiarization with the simulator will surely increase the chances of survival for the simulants.
Strange behavior of examinees is alarming: up to 90% of patients ask questions about minimum system requirements and number of polygons. Probably, the consequences of inflammatory processes of the left cerebral hemisphere and hypothalamus are affecting.
The system (drip)is placed intravenously in the patient for immediate and complete entry of medical drugs into the bloodstream. No minimum requirements are imposed on the patient. Test sites were used by the lab last year, but their location is highly classified.
17:00
By the end of the first day of the lab, 45 visitors have been examined.
The results of the examination are delivered to the central laboratory for detailed analysis.
Day 2 02.04.2005.
10:00
All night long we analyzed the results. By morning a summary report was compiled:
45 visitors (40 men and 5 women) were examined for symptoms of Febris Sabulosa (later FS).
BP elevation up to 140/90 mmHg was registered in 12 people, up to 180/105 mmHg. - у 7. Venous filling up to 100% was registered only in 28 subjects, the average filling was 83%. Pupillary reaction is adequate in 95% of subjects: pupils constricted at direct exposure to light reflected by frontal reflector.
The classification of preuremic stages of chronic renal failure (CRF) with additional determination of proteinuria degree was used. Judging by the reaction to the test drugs taken orally by the visitors, the CPN syndrome was not detected in any of the examined patients.
Dynamics of laboratory tests revealed that in 6 patients the stage of FS compensation passed to the latent stage. Alarming signal. We proceeded to the choice of optimal medical preparations for prevention and treatment of the consequences of FS infection.
Prof. Pestitsky is inclined to the choice of drugs of mixed type of immune response (Th1/Th2).
The rationale for choosing immunocorrectors of this type is their ability to correct internal hemodynamics, stabilize the rate of glomerular filtration, and reduce FS activity. Analyzing the literature data, we can conclude that the following drugs meet these requirements:
(drugs description )
12:00
We continue to examine visitors. All those examined receive a certificate with the results of the examination, signed by the medical staff of the field laboratory, the certificate is stamped.
Subjects are easy to contact, but the introduction of quarantine has affected their number. The age bar has risen sharply. Yesterday minors prevailed among the patients, today are much less.
14:00
Some of the visitors have mutation effects. This may be due to the close proximity of the GSC booth, as our examination did not reveal any symptoms of FS infection in these visitors.
Immediate hospitalization is recommended for several patients. It is necessary to make sure that they do not disregard Innokenty Savvovich's advice - those who refuse will have to be forcibly loaded into the carriage.
It's good to know that the secret laboratory is very well shielded.
We are not taken for what we really are.
16:00
We're continuing to examine the visitors. All patients are taking the medications prescribed by Professor Pestitsky.
The chief physician has left the laboratory area and has come into contact with extremely suspicious, probably unwell individuals.
They ask not to stand on their roof - in such cases immediate hospitalization is recommended.
Forcibly loading the patients into an ambulance was not possible: we were beaten to it. I wonder who carried out mass hospitalization using buses?
To clarify this issue, we followed the buses, observing the rules of covert surveillance. The buses unloaded the potential simulants at the club "Slava"
The choice of location is not random. A healthy person would not go to such a place, a sane person would lack either money or determination. But by taking the Hippocratic Oath, we have condemned ourselves to spend 90% of our time with people who are not quite healthy. Do no harm!
Tomorrow, don't forget: silent shoes with soft rubber soles.
Day 3 03.04.2005
10:00
There is a high probability that FS is a lethal virus.
11:00
Examined a man in a yellow T-shirt. Strangely, no suspicious symptoms were found. Still recommended him to support the body's immune system with vitamins, as well as to familiarize with the simulation of human behavior in an extreme situation "Pathologic (Mor. Utopia)". The patient refused gently but resolutely.
12:00
A large number of potential infected people gathered at the booth. In order to prevent mass contamination, the Chief Medical Officer gave a presentation of the simulator.
Taking the opportunity, the medical staff of the booth unobtrusively examined the visitors.
12:30
Visitor Andrei Kuzmin broke away from the group of those examined and stayed for a closer look at the simulator. He refused a comprehensive medical examination.
The level of high-frequency vibrations of his brain waves put the nurse in a trance state for a while. The Chief Laboratory Physician explained to Mr. Kuzmin the operation of the simulator in detail. It is necessary to examine the Chief Physician - none of us are familiar with such details.
14:00
Mr. Malik Khatajaev, a visitor of the stand, refused to make a comprehensive examination.
However, he promised to send his colleague Mr. Pyotr Prokhorenko for examination. Mr. Khatajaev argued that if Prokhorenko showed symptoms of FS, all other employees of the Lesta studio would also be hopelessly infected.
15:00
An unidentified infected person in a coma was found by our paramedics at Buka's booth and brought in. The patient could not be saved.
The time of death was recorded and the body was sent for pathologic examination. Autopsy results confirmed that death was due to FS infection. The fact that the FS virus leaves non-living cells instantly is extremely important.
15:30
Possibility of fatalities from FS infection has been announced. Asking people to leave the booth area.
Examine visitors who were too close to the infected person at the time of death. Patients have no instinct for self-preservation. I wonder if this is the result of inflammation.
A detailed study and analysis of the collected material will probably qualify us for the Küfner Prize.
16:00
The mental state of the Chief Medical Officer of the laboratory is of serious concern to Prof. Pestitsky. Today the Chief spoke about the primitive methods of developing simulators of human behavior and the possible direction of their development.
Probably, stress, mental overload of the last days, contacts with infected people and unexpectedly serious attitude to the question of rabbit breeding are affecting him. He seems to really consider himself a computer game developer by now.
17:00
Paramedics found Mr. Prokhorenko in a coma. All symptoms were identical to the previous case. At their own risk, the paramedics took Mr. Prokhorenko to the field laboratory. The measures taken by the medical personnel allowed Mr. Prokhorenko to be resuscitated and partially brought out of the coma.
This fact suggests the possibility of overcoming the consequences of infection by activating the latent intellectual potential of the patient.
17:15
Lesta Studios employees have been recommended to undergo a comprehensive examination. The inhabitants of the neighboring orange booth are also recommended to be examined. They are clearly in a stage of extreme emotional agitation.
Also disturbing is the fact that they are interested in breeding rabbits (when discussing this issue on their faces appears an extremely spiritualized expression).
People with the letters DTF around their necks cannot but surprise: it seems that they acted as volunteers of our laboratory all three days, taking measures to reduce the number of visitors (especially middle school age) and solving organizational issues.
A commendable enthusiasm worthy of full encouragement.
18:00
A simulation of human behavior in an extreme situation was recognized as one of the most out-of-the-box preventive measures to combat epidemics.

Crater Collapses in Iceland's New Volcano Spewing Rivers of Lava
Iceland's newest volcano, located in the Reykjanes peninsula, began erupting in early July, 2023. Now it's throwing "spatter bombs'" of molten lava.
In Iceland, the world's newest "baby" volcano is throwing a temper tantrum: It's overflowing and spewing "spatter bombs," or blobs of molten lava, into the surrounding crater.
The volcano formed on July 10, when an underground eruption opened a 1.7-mile-long (2.7 kilometers) fissure in the ground of Iceland's Reykjanes peninsula, southwest of the capital, Reykjavík. Leading up to this event, the region experienced a "seismic swarm," during which more than 7,000 earthquakes shook the area starting on July 4, according to a statement from the Icelandic Met Office. Lava trickled from the fracture in the ground, and seismic activity decreased for about a week after the eruption.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On July 18, however, "there was a major shift in the vent activity overnight," according to a post on the Facebook page of Rannsóknarstofa í eldfjallafræði og náttúruvá (the Laboratory of Volcanology and Natural Hazards), a research group from the University of Iceland. At around 11:30 p.m. local time, "the crater filled up to the brim with lava and the fountaining began to throw spatter bombs well beyond the crater rims." Roughly three hours later, a small opening formed, allowing lava to spill over the crater, the post added. By early morning, a section of the crater's rim had collapsed, releasing a river of lava to the north and west. The lava pouring from this crater is roughly 2,192 degrees Fahrenheit (1,200 degrees Celsius), the scientists said.
"The crater became unstable and collapsed," Ingibjörg Jónsdóttir, an associate professor of geography at the University of Iceland and member of the lab, told Live Science in an email. "It had built up quite fast and it was filling up with lava on the inside, causing pressure to the walls. Not unusual as such but spectacular and of concern since there were people quite close by not long before it happened (in a closed area though)."
On the opposite side of the volcano, lava flowing south stalled and eventually crusted over, the post said. The area around the eruption site is uninhabited, and the eruption does not currently post a risk to infrastructure, according to the Icelandic Met Office. Firefighters in Grindavík, a nearby Icelandic town, have already contained the potential spread of fire from July 18's lava spill, and they no longer believe it is a threat, according to the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service.
Scientists will continue to monitor the volcano's behavior because future lava flows could ignite wildfires and reduce air quality in the region, according to the statement. Watch a livestream of the volcano on the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service's website here.

Isolation
Chapter 2
December 22
I asked Doug about the Umbrella facility. He’s been there several times during all his stays here at the station, but never in the main wing, only in the building of the security service and in a break room in the workers’ quarters, which is located in one of the outer buildings. The first time he was there was four years ago, the last time just over a year ago. Aside from his visits, he was doing some research on our neighbors. Before I forget anything, I should write down what he told me.
The manager of the facility is called Alfred Ashford. He is a British aristocrat and multimillionaire. As the grandson of one of the founding members, he is also quite a bigwig at Umbrella, even if he largely stays out of their business and only really looks after his own affairs. He visits the Antarctic facility regularly every three to four months but rarely stays longer than a week. He only comes here unscheduled if something has happened. So, the likelihood of him being there during the virus outbreak is rather low. Doug spoke to him once on his first visit to the facility. He was in his early 20s then, so he should be about 26 or 27 years old now. He’s arrogant, condescending, and quite eccentric. He insists on being addressed as “Lord Ashford”. Apparently, he has a military fetish, even though he never served in the army. All the workers do is complain about him, what an asshole he is, that he punishes them harshly for the smallest mistakes and generally treats them like shit. Sometimes, workers just disappear. Supposedly, they were transferred, even if no one knew anything about a pending transfer. The first thing “Lord Ashford” told Doug was that if he or any of us visited the site, we had to report to one of the outer security buildings. They have instructions to shoot anyone who enters the site unannounced without warning. Nice. Are they even allowed to do that? On the other hand, it’s probably not too difficult to make a corpse disappear here.
Doug has said Dr. Edwards looks a lot like this Alfred guy, but he no longer has any close relatives. His only sister died years ago. On Doug’s last visit, however, one of the workers said that he was living with his sister, which left Doug rather confused. The sister is definitely dead, “Lord Ashford” told him personally. Why would he lie about that? Well, who knows, maybe he still has half-siblings, or the worker got something mixed up. I wouldn’t rule out the possibility that Dr. Edwards is indeed related to him. A cousin, perhaps? She can hardly be older than her mid-20s. She’s probably just finished her doctorate. But Umbrella only takes people with a few years of professional experience for well-paid positions. Everyone else isn’t even invited for an interview, and the documents go straight into the trash bin. Unless she’s some kind of prodigy, I don’t know how else she could have gotten the job at her age except through nepotism or connections in the boardroom.
After some initial difficulties, the Umbrella facility was once a renowned research center from around the end of the 1970s to the beginning of the 1980s. Then there was a massive accident. It is also said to have been a viral outbreak that triggered everything, but the main problem was a malfunction of the security system that was supposed to prevent the virus from spreading. All the security doors closed while the researchers were still in the laboratories. Decontamination was then initiated, which somehow caused a fire to break out. Everyone who was still in there was burned or suffocated. Approximately 95% of all the scientists working there at the time, including Alfred’s sister. Being burned alive, what a terrible death. There was nothing left to save, scientists dead, laboratory rooms and equipment destroyed, and even the research data was largely lost. The facility was then temporarily closed and rebuilt to what it is today. It was reopened at the end of the 1980s.
Today, the Umbrella facility is intended to be a storage facility and logistics center. Products that are not sold immediately are brought there and shipped as required. In addition, Umbrella’s “special products”, which are not produced in bulk, are to be stored there. I wonder what they are? There are also various research materials, all kinds of cell cultures, strains of bacteria and viruses, molds, endo- and ectoparasites, and so on. The few laboratories they still have are only to be used for quality control. Maybe Dr. Edwards works in one of those. I guess it’s also possible that they check the viruses before sending them out to other labs for further research. Of course, this Alfred guy could have simply lied about what they were doing there to avoid pesky questions or that things have changed since Doug’s last visit, and they’re actively doing research again. Either way, the story Dr. Edwards has told us doesn’t seem entirely far-fetched. Still, there’s something fishy about it. Why is she the only one from the facility who has turned up here? Why did she refuse to say which virus it was?
December 22 Addendum
Harry went to Dr. Edwards today to bring her food and keep her company for a while, as well as can be done through a locked door with a viewing window. I grilled him a bit about her and especially her condition. At least the walkie-talkies are still working. So far, she seems to be fine. There are no signs that she is ill. We shouldn’t get too excited, though. Who knows how long the incubation period of the whatever-it-is virus is by default? Harry has asked her about it again, but she still refuses to talk about the virus. Trade secret. Guess there’s nothing we can do for the time being.
I just hope it’s nothing too serious. According to Harry’s description of the quarantine accommodation, it is far from ideal. David modified the door to Dr. Edward’s area yesterday so that it is relatively airtight. He also fitted an additional lock that can only be opened from the outside. All of us have a key for the door itself, but only Harry and Isaac have a key for the extra lock. Perhaps a bit of an exaggeration. Who would go to her voluntarily under the circumstances? But better safe than sorry. If Harry or Isaac give her something, they put it in front of the door, unlock it briefly, and maintain a safe distance so that she can get it. Then, everything is closed again, and the area around the door is disinfected. They don’t have proper protective clothing, just masks and gloves. She is only given food on disposable plates, which she has to throw in one of the waste barrels that are incinerated eventually. Isaac had also given her a change of clothes. Most of it doesn’t really fit her, but it’s better than nothing. She can’t walk around in that dress all the time. At least, she is very cooperative. The whole thing is certainly not pleasant for her either.
Apart from that, Harry said that he couldn’t figure out what was going on with Dr. Edwards. She gave him a very intelligent impression but seems to have been living under a rock for the last decade or so. She almost comes across as a time traveler, as if she jumped into a time machine ten or more years ago and landed here. She has no idea about current political events. She didn’t even know that the Soviet Union no longer existed. That was years ago. How can you not have noticed that? Even if you’re not interested in politics, you must at least know that, right? Besides, Umbrella opened several facilities in ex-Soviet states after the collapse. Shouldn’t she at least know that?
Aside from politics, she doesn’t know anything about movies, music, or other entertainment. The handful of movies she knew were from the early 80s or even older. So Harry tried to find her a spare TV and a VHS player but without success. Instead, he gave her a few books so that she wouldn’t be bored for the next two weeks. They are all from previous research teams who have forgotten or wanted to forget them here. I hope Dr. Edwards likes poorly written romance novels. Aside from the books, he also gave her a CD player with a few CDs. She didn’t know any of the bands. Harry said he wasn’t really interested in pop music himself, but even he had at least heard of most of them. She also got a Gameboy with some games. I think it was taken away from Michael* after he spent too much time on his Gameboy and too little on his actual work. I’m sure he doesn’t want it back now, which was probably Harry’s intention. She didn’t know what a Gameboy was either, unsurprisingly, at this point. Well, maybe she’s a bit too old for that anyway.
What a strange woman. What does she do all day when she isn’t working? Or does she work 24/7 with only a few breaks to eat and sleep? At least that she never picks up a newspaper, watches TV, or talks to people about anything other than work, maybe, is a more plausible theory than her being a time traveler. Maybe she can catch up on some everyday knowledge in her quarantine.

⟢ - Structure of the 𝐀𝐄𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐑 𝐅𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐃𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍
Tumblr media
The 𝐀𝐄𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐑 𝐅𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐃𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 operates as a corporation and trust, funding research for various fields of scientific study through grants. It also engages in many different charitable acts related to the rehabilitation and conservation of endangered Pokémon, especially those native to the islands of Alola.
The corporation was founded by current sitting president and CEO, Lusamine Delacroix, with her husband, Mohn Delacroix, serving as vice president until his disappearance. The pair set out to establish a higher standard for how humans, Pokémon and technology can work with one another, while benefiting the natural ecosystems. Aether works alongside many different organizations throughout, and outside of, Alola.
Fields of Interest
The foundation funds projects, research, innovations and expeditions related, but not limited to, conservation, ecology, biochemistry, physics, epidemiology, genetic engineering, and computer engineering. Scientists and scholars from across the globe often seek out the foundation’s funding, traveling to the Aether Paradise in order to meet with members of the board, and Lusamine herself. There is quite the impressive network of intellects connected to the foundation, and it is not unusual to see the Aether seal stamped onto many peer reviewed journals.
Grants and scholarships for students pursuing careers in STEM are also gifted by the Aether Foundation. Many of these students are then placed into internships at the paradise, or in one of the Aether Houses— and funneled into a permanent position of employment upon graduation. The foundation relies on having the most brilliant, cunning minds involved with their projects, and so they make sure to leave a good impression on the scientific community. It is pretty common to see an Aether representative at any major conference involving STEM, or around university campuses.
Working for the Aether Foundation
Employment with the Aether Foundation ranges across different positions— from field researchers, to chemists, to public relations, and many, many more. Those who work at the Aether Paradise work directly with Aether’s conservation programs, vaccination developments, and technology departments. And the genetics program and UB project, if you’re aware of the horrors.
Gaining employment, however, is no simple task. Lusamine expects an impressive resume, and a mind to match, but if somebody passes the hiring process, it is great job security— as long as they do not disappoint her.
All employees are required to sign a non-disclosure agreement upon being hired. All positions are by contract, and salary paid.
All employees are required to submit their biometrics.
The hierarchy
From highest to lowest:
President
Vice President (currently unoccupied)
Branch Manager
Assistant Branch Manager
Divisional Manager
Assistant Divisional Manager
Office Administration
Lead Associate
Associate
Intern
Scientists and research teams are categorized and ranked based on individual projects and assignments.
Accessing the Aether Paradise
If commuting to work, employees have two options: traveling across the water from one of the islands via Aether-owned ferry service, or by helicopter. The ferry service also carries tourists on public access days, so that they can experience the conservation deck, and tour the island.
Aether offers on-site dorms for those who would rather not commute back and forth all week, and for those who are staying on the artificial for an extended period of time for an assignment.
Security
Security is taken very seriously on the island; Lusamine is incredibly strict about it, and intends on keeping it that way.
All employees are assigned key cards, which are required to access all of the rooms and laboratories on the floors one through three.
All of the laboratories and doors on floor three, and in basements 1, 2 and 3 require a fingerprint and retina scan.
Certain high-security areas require two or three employees to use fingerprint or retina scan in order to unlock the door for access.
Higher ranked foundation members and scientists have a chip implanted in their left wrist, which is used as a “master key” to access everything on the Aether Paradise, along with the locks for the Aether House and research stations.
Basements 1, 2 and 3 have safety laser scanners installed that are programmed to scan every room, laboratory and corridor every fifteen minutes. If a persons whose biometrics have not been logged into Aether’s system is picked upon, an alarm goes off, and all doors are locked. Only Aether security guards, or high ranked foundation members, are capable of unlocking the doors in order to remove the intruder.
ALL points of the Aether Paradise have motion sensing cameras and CCTV streaming.
Aether buildings are known for their monochrome coloring and bright fluorescent lights. This is to prevent employees and visitors from finding dark or secluded corners to hide in, and discourages people from attempting to smuggle Aether property. It also makes it easy for visitors to be picked up on by the security cameras; everybody on staff is wearing all white, so somebody who is wearing even the slightest bit of color stands out.
In the case of an emergency, the Aether Paradise is capable of undergoing full lockdown mode. All incoming boats and aircraft are instructed to return to the mainland, and all outgoing forms of transportation are halted.

There is a lot of misinformation when it comes to pet food, I hope this can shed some light. - Grains are necessary (Unless diagnosed with grain allergies by a veterinarian). - Raw isn't always best. (Raw/home cooked diets need to be properly formulated by a board certified nutritionist to be balanced, more information below). - Grain free can be dangerous. - The vast majority of companies do not follow WSAVA guidelines. - Veterinarians DO NOT get kick backs from suggesting food. How are they going to get a kickback from a food you didn't even buy from them? If anything, the pet store employees are getting kick backs for suggesting foods! The “Big Five” Brands are the five brands that adhere to WSAVA guidelines (World Small Animal Veterinary Association). Which are: - Employs one or more full-time qualified nutritionist(s) and willingly discloses their credentials. - Foods are formulated by a qualified team of professionals such as nutritionists, toxicologists, food scientists etc. - Undergoes feeding trials that meet or exceed AAFCO standards, for most or all formulations. - Foods are produced and manufactured in US facilities, owned and operated by the manufacturer, or under close supervision of the manufacturer. Equipped with machinery, laboratories and staff that provide extensive on-site quality assurance. - Provides detailed description on quality control protocol. Selection criteria for partners, analysis and sample tracking of externally sourced ingredients, daily safety checks of product batches and facilities, physical inspection, key nutrient testing before final packing. - Provides exact number for any nutrient on an energy basis (grams per kcal). - Readily provides kcal content per gram and per cup. - Conducts research relevant to nutrition, products marketed, and product claims. Publishes research in peer-reviewed journals. So let’s get to it. The “Big Five” Brands are: Royal Canin - Breed specific lines that were created in conjunction with breeders and veterinarians, general health lines and targeted health lines + RX diets Eukanuba - Owned by Royal Canin, mainly their performance lines + general health lines Purina - Sport lines, general health lines, targeted health lines, most accessible and cost effective + RX diets IAMS - General health lines, cost effective, easily accessible Hills Pet - General health lines, targeted health lines + RX diets If you’d like to do some reading… Here are multiple links for kibble, raw diets, grain free vs grain inclusive, Diet Associated DCM and WSAVA. How's things been lately over there? Any interesting weather? Mayhaps an eventful shift?
Hey Axyer, thanks for the question! We’re great!
In terms of eventful shifts, oh boy do we have some... if I were to list all in the past two weeks even, this post would be waaay too long. For those who aren’t aware, we (The UCOF), are a public safety and service group, and there’s fifty-odd of us and over 2.6 billion people on the Oxraan planet, so we have our hands very full! Just yesterday, in fact, we were called to the continent Regali-Oxraa to help clear out an illegal dig site in dead land (land put aside to not be touched by any civilization, kind of like national parks) and oh boy, was it cold. The poor guard’s department was out there for hours, and over six came back to base early because of hypothermia. Delta(my boss) included, even with all his fur!
Thanks again for the question! - Nova Dysuvia, technical and laboratory department

Goblet Building Permit, Ul’dah, Office of the Building Inspector Building Title: Aetheric Studies Laboratory Aurora Laboratory Permit for: Secure Class 3 Laboratory to be constructed as per regulations (see addendum) Location: Plot 52, Ward 29, Subdivision Requested by: Zoissette Vauban Co-signatories: Students of Baldesion; Gage Acquisitions; Garlond Ironworks Notes: Per revision sheets
~*~
Much like the passing of the seasons, another threat to end everything came and went, and Zoissette found herself adrift once more.
It was not that there was not plenty to occupy her. There was. Always more legal work, always another minor emergency that benefitted from her attention, always more grant requests, always more people to help, always more training to do, always more sorties to lead, always more duty to perform.
But somehow she either found or made time for herself, and there was always the question of the research she wished to perform, scratching ever urgently at the back of her mind. Research she would pursue, as to the truth of the underpinnings of this star and the realms beyond.
She had learned much, and had so much more to learn.
And so Zoissette studied. Looking carefully over her own notes taken over the many years. Early arcanistry. Lessons from Papalymo. Ancient Nymian codices and indices. What had been learned from the Crystal Tower. From the city of Mhach. What she and Y’shtola together had gleaned of anima. From adventures and explorations of the Isle of Val. From the people she labored alongside with in service to the star and to their own research. Considering the energies involved and what had been learned from the First regarding the astral and the umbral, light and dark. A shift to the modern understanding of the elemental wheel. Everything from everywhere, from Allagan ruins to entire other realms.
She would need some things, and some time, and more information, always more information, but she was certain she was on the path to solving many mysteries.
So, away from her friends, outside of her usual lab, she found a place where she could safely conduct some dangerous experiments without risk, and she set to the task of setting up a new laboratory. This one would store some dangerous artifacts, and be capable of harnessing and focusing aether and energy and more besides.
It would require time and effort, supplies, money, and new technologies. And she would need some very special permits and specific permissions.
She was working on the permit paperwork for said laboratory in her office when Klynt dropped in unannounced. This was not unusual for the Roegadyn. She was a mercurial creature, at best. Zoissette glanced up at her as she entered.
“Hello, Klynt. What do you need?”
Klynt had noticed some time ago that Zoissette asked that a lot by way of greeting, as though she was a stranger to the idea of someone wanting to stop by just to talk. Always expecting that someone would expect something of her. Klynt badly wanted to break her of the habit, but wasn’t sure how.
Stopping by for social visits just because more often would help though, she was sure.
“Nothin’. Whatchu workin’ on.”
“Paperwork I am certain you would find boring.”
Well, she was probably right, but Klynt was game to at least hear about it.
“Sure. What’s it for?”
“It is for a laboratory I am having built to further my research.”
Nope, Zoissette was wrong. This was interesting.
“What’s wrong with Gage’s workshop? I thought you loved working there.”
“I do, but I am planning to do some more dangerous work. I want it to be off site and away from other experiments and people.”
“Dangerous?”
“High energy levels, unbalanced aethers, that sort of thing.”
“Sounds neat. Whatchu gonna call it?”
Zoissette looked up at Klynt with that perplexed look she often got.
“It is just a laboratory, Klynt. It hardly needs a name. And it is meant to be flexible, so a description of its function would hardly suffice as a title.”
“You should give it a name. The Baldesion Annex has a name.”
“Yes, that is named after its founder.”
“Maybe you could name the lab after yourself, then. Vauban Laboratories!”
Zoissette’s face shifted almost immediately to her distantly polite look, and Klynt immediately realised her mistake.
“Nah, never mind, sorry, forgot for a moment that a lot of your family is kinda awful.”
“It is not that. It is just that - I am hardly a Vauban, Klynt.”
“Your city took you back.”
“I am not naming the laboratory after myself, Klynt.”
“Alright, but you should still name it. We give names to things that are important us, because we care about things with names.”
Zoissette stopped what she was doing, and seemed to be looking through the table, rather than at any of the papers on it. Klynt wondered what was going through her head this time, but it wasn’t as though she could just ask. Zoissette already had her guard up. Pushing would just wind up doing exactly that - push her away.
“Eh, just think about it,” said Klynt. “Who’s helping you build it, anyroad?”
“…by its nature, I have to contract out quite a bit of it. Gage, of course, is helping. The Scions of the Seventh Dawn are disbanded, unfortunately, but Y’shtola and Urianger have agreed to release some data I will find useful. The Ironworks, of course, can be trusted to be discreet and are the only people who can meet some of my requirements. To start, though, the Students of Baldesion are providing the bulk of the initial work and permits.”
“Huh? Why?”
Zoissette leafed through her papers, and pushed a design diagram over for Klynt to look at. “The primary assembly that will need to be built around is a gloriole containment based on what Ryss and I learned from Mhach. You recall Ozma, of course.”
“Yeah, and its bastard father in the Isle of Val. Oh, and the cute lil’ one that Ryss made.”
“Yes. The ‘cute little one’ that Ryss spearheaded making, with assistance from the Students of Baldesion. The cute little one that, as I recall, you leapt on top of and tried to ride around like a chocobo before promptly knocking yourself out when it went out through the workshop door and your head failed to do the same through the door frame.”
Klynt grinned. “Hey, it was hard to control and very zippy. Like riding a big smooth marble.”
“I do not know what you thought would happen, or where you learned enough to make that comparison.”
Klynt just shrugged, and Zoissette sighed. “Anyroad. I need their cooperation. Ryss has decided to take her research in a different direction than I intend to explore, but her, myself, and Krile have all agreed that the data is too dangerous to be released to just anyone. So, officially, the Students are actually building the initial laboratory. There are other agreements in place, clauses about who gets what in case of accident, so on, so on.”
Klynt nodded agreeably as Zoissette signed one last piece of paperwork, and began to sweep all of her work back to herself.
“And now I need to file everything and go talk to the on site engineer. Is it alright if we catch up later?”
“Oh, yeah, sure, of course,” said Klynt, giving Zoissette a jaunty two-finger salute. Zoissette began to rush out, but stopped, and smiled at Klynt.
“I do mean that. I appreciate that you stopped by. I will linkpearl you once I am done filing all this.”
“Well, you’d better now, I’ve never been stood up before, and if you’re the first to do that to me I’ll be just heartbroken”
Zoissette rolled her eyes but laughed as she left, and Klynt chuckled as she watched her go. Once she was gone, she thought to herself for a few moments. She did not know any of the Students of Baldesion directly - she and Krile just did not interact much, and G’raha always seemed to be on the bounce - but she knew a guy who knew a guy.
She activated her linkpearl. “Hey, Thancred - it’s Klynt, yeah. Listen, you have an in with the Students of Baldesion, yeah? Hey, listen. You want to do something nice for Zoissette and also be the funniest guy in Eorzea?”
~*~
Some moons later, Zoissette and the Xaela in charge of construction made their way through the laboratory. He was tall and probably handsome, she was not sure; all she knew was that he smiled too much and wore too little. But he had come highly recommended, and frankly, she was willing to ignore his eccentricities if he could deliver.
And deliver he had.
She was beyond delighted. The laboratory had been made to her exacting specification in every detail. The building was well sealed against the outside, with carefully designed emergency systems that would ensure safety in case of accident. The Ironworks had come through with some Allagan automated systems, which hummed whisper-quiet in the space. The gloriole assembly had been carefully and correctly build, and now sat in the main space, a spherical containment assembly around it. Off to one side were instruments and tools, and on the other, a place where crystal energies could be fine tuned and studied. The laboratory was flexible and capable and everything she could have wanted or imagined and more.
The Xaela grinned at her as she finished checking everything over.
“It is perfect,” she said.
“Great,” he replied. “We even managed to get that last minute change request done, too. so if you’ll just sign off, we can be on our way.”
Zoissette took the papers from him, and looked over the acceptance criteria, checking them off one by one. “Change request? I have not made one of those in sennights.”
“Yeah, it was from the Students of Baldesion. Check the revision pages. It wasn’t anything major, nothing functional, just for the cornerstone plate and your plaque out front.”
Zoissette frowned, and looked.
“Change request: building to be named Aurora Laboratories. Requested by: Krile Baldesion, Students of Baldesion. Note: You’re welcome!”
Zoissette just shook her head and closed her eyes. After a moment, though, she smiled, and laughed a little, and signed the paperwork.
