AN EXCEPTIONAL FOLDING LOCK KNIFE FOR EXHBITION, THIRD QUARTER OF THE 19TH CENTURY PROBABLY LONDON.
with burnished folding wavy-edged blade of flattened-diamond section, locked by a shaped burnished spring-catch, gilt-brass cross-piece cast with scrolling foliage and incorporating a pair of acanthus langets, gilt fillets fitted on each face with mother-of-pearl plaques (very small losses), those on the inner face polished flat and those on the outer finely carved with a symmetrical arrangement of delicate scrolling foliage, a stylised display stand charged with the arms of the Worshipful Company of Cutlers surmounted by its crest, an elephant’s head erased, in its original leather-covered case with blue velvet and silk padded lining.
The London Worshipful Company of Cutlers were granted their arms on 17 May 1476 with an alternative crest of an elephant and castle granted in 1622. The Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire received their incorporation in 1624 with the same arms as the London Company but with an augmentation of the fess. The latter company had much of the cutlery trade by the middle of the 18th century though there remained cutlers in London throughout the 19th century. In 1879 there were thirty cutlers recorded working in the city of London and the company held an Exhibition in its Hall, awarding medals for various classes of work. It is likely that the present dagger was submitted for such an exhibition.

Note
I don't know if here in Greece we do the same with our own artifacts and marbles, but for the British museum to own 100.000 plus artifacts and only displaying 6.000?? Yeah doesn't make any sense then not to give them back what is ours.
If fact not only it would be a smart choice but the museum could show to the world the other artifacts they have not yet shown to the world. That means people would come expecting nee stuff to see and we get our marbles.
Side note but the british museum also has The Nereid Monument, finest of the Lykian tombs found at Xanthos, in what is now SW Turkey, which is huge aside from many ancient Greek vases, small statues, plates etc.
Typically all large museums have big store rooms where they keep a lot of artifacts. Some are in maintenace, some are used for loans, some for seasonal exhibitions etc
In the museum of Ancient Olympia they have like 100 Corinthian helmets in good condition that are not exhibited at all, probably because there are, well, dozens of them, and only a handful are in the proper exhibits. Joke's on them though, I am still waiting for them to make an extra room / hall where they will exhibit all those helmets with mystical placement and lighting. Wouldn't that be cool? Besides, these helmets were offerings of ancient soldiers to the place they held sacred (Olympia), it's a pity for these helmets to be locked in store rooms for nobody to see.
Tumblr media
But for a FOREIGN museum to do it, that's insane. And let's just say they are keeping an extra collection for the aforementioned reasons. 100 thousand artifacts?????????????? Like this can not be explained or justified no matter how hard one tries. This is some inexcusable insufferably entitled shit right there.

Syd Barrett, Olympia, London, Britain - 22 Dec 1967. Photos by Ray Stevenson.
Rex Features date: 22 Dec 1967 or on 6 June 1970 as part of a Music and Fashion Festival. The trio (Syd Barrett, David Gilmour and Jerry Shirley) performed four songs, "Terrapin", "Gigolo Aunt", "Effervescing Elephant" and "Octopus". Poor mixing left the vocals barely audible until part-way through the last number. At the end of the fourth song, Barrett unexpectedly but politely put down his guitar and walked off the stage. The performance has been bootlegged. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p25BbkKBqcM

Syd Barrett performs live at the Extravaganza ‘70 Music and Fashion Festival in the entrance lobby of the Olympia Exhibition Hall, June 6, 1970. Facing sound problems and feeling uncomfortable about performing live, Syd put his guitar down and walked offstage after just four songs. It would be his only live performance as a solo artist.

PJO Mortal AU (Solangelo-centric)
 The Olympia Family
(AKA the family with so much chaos and drama, they would have made an even more popular reality TV show than Keeping Up with the Kardashians)
Thalia Grace - 24
An ambassador of the Artemis Foundation
Badass
Won't hesitate to throw hands at anyone who messes with her family.
Very protective of her little brother and cousins.
Not afraid to speak her mind and fight for what she thinks is right.
Has a kind of love-hate relationship with her stepmother Hera. While Thalia respects and acknowledges Hera as her stepmother, she is a free spirit, and hates being chained down by the old-fashioned rules Hera imposes.
Briefly dated Luke Castellan for 2 years, but broke up due to reasons. The break up was mutual and Luke still remains as one of Thalia's closest friends.
Deadly with a bow and arrow (she'd be hunting down hunters like they hunt animals for living if it weren't for the fact that murder is unfortunately illegal).
Jason Grace - 19
Sophomore at Uni (double majors in Management and Aerodynamic Engineering)
Flight school graduate
Heir to Jupiter Airlines (given that his father doesn't plan to retire anytime soon, Jason is considering becoming a pilot in the meantime)
Hera's favourite child since he actually follows her rules (He bends them slightly every now and then, but she doesn't need to know that).
Regular at the Manhattan Chess Club
Has an intense rivalry with his older cousin Percy that's been going on for like 10 years now... (his life goal is to beat Percy. They're currently at a stalemate of 3795 wins each.)
Very protective of Nico. He almost had an aneurysm when he heard that grumpy, little stay-away-or-I’ll-death-glare-you Nico had a boyfriend. A boyfriend.
Has a best friend Leo Valdez who is an engineer student with an eccentric personality and is a mischievous menace. His childhood friend, Reyna Avila Ramirez-Arellano, is an athlete in javelin-throwing and currently resides in her hometown in San Juan, Puerto Rico, but they still keep in touch.
Dating Piper McLean, the 19-year-old founder of the Beautifully Imperfect Foundation
Zeus Olympia
CEO of Jupiter Airlines
Drama Queen TM
Favours Thalia more despite Jason being his heir and enables most of her rebellious antics, much to Hera's chagrin.
Can be rather childish and petty ("It's been 43 years, and I've long since given up on expecting him to change," Hades deadpanned.)
As the youngest child of the Olympia family and with his father on Death's doorstep, Zeus was given a lot of free reign, hence his playboy tendencies. He eventually did settle down with Hera Junos, the single daughter of one of the oldest families in Greece. Hera was fond of children but was unable to sire her own due to medical issues, which led to Zeus getting a mistress (with Hera's begrudged consent), Beryl Grace, the daughter of Hera's family chef. Beryl has always had a rather strange personality and an unhealthy obsession with alcohol. A few years after giving birth to Thalia and Jason Grace respectively, her liver gave way and she died before they could find a solution.
Hera Olympia (formerly Junos)
Zeus' wife
The kids call her ‘Aunt Ra’
Jason is her favourite child because he actually listens to her
Coming from both a high-class and old family, Hera was raised to be a perfect lady (a lady should not wear pants or speak out of turn etc. etc.) and has a rather old-fashioned way of thinking, enforcing strict rules in her household.
She still loves Thalia, but because the way Thalia acts goes against everything Hera was taught, her relationship with her stepdaughter is a bit strained. Hera now mostly lets Thalia do her own thing, but every now and then might still be a bit controlling. She's trying, okay?
Bianca di Angelo - 19
Sophomore at Uni (majors in Journalism and English Literature)
Works part-time at the Artemis Foundation
Generally quiet and shy, but has a tendency to fuss over small details.
Very responsible and possibly the only one with a brain cell among the cousins. (Proteus and Triton don’t even live in the same continent half of the time; Kym doesn't give a damn; Thesi is too nice to reprimand them; Ro‘s too busy fawning over her fiancé; Hero is more likely to fan the flames than quell them; Thalia, Jason, Percy and Nico are always either competing against each other or breaking the Internet with their antics again; Hazel is pretty innocent but has a slight vindictive streak so caution must be exercised; and Tyson and Estelle are innocent beans of sunshine that must be protected).
She can be bold when she wants to be, as well as reckless.
Has her father's habit of gesturing with her hands while talking and when she is on edge.
Ace
Nico di Angelo - 17
High school Senior
Heir to Pluto Corp.
Resident Emo in the family (“I'm not emo!” “Your only-dark-clothing phase says otherwise.” “It's not a phase, Persephone!” “Like father, like son.”)
Stubborn AF
Can't deal with all his overprotective sisters and cousins
Currently pining over William Solace ("Shut up!")
Avid gamer, plays digital games, card games (his childhood and to-this-day favourite is Myth-o-magic, which is one of the reasons he approves of Hazel's boyfriend, Frank) and all games in general (he visits the arcade monthly to make sure he's still 1st place in every game there)
Has a tendency to hold grudges and gestures with his hands while talking or when on edge, a habit he shares with his father and older sister.
Plays the violin (Persephone had introduced him to it, and he'd taken a liking to it)
Hazel Olympia (formerly Levesque) - 14
High school Freshman
Aspiring artist (she’s won thirty different art competitions locally in the span of three years and placed silver last year in the Chelsea International Fine Art Competition under an anonymous name because she wanted to win by her own merit rather than rely on the Olympia name. Hades plans to surprise her by giving her own exhibition hall for her next birthday.)
Regular at the Manhattan Riding Club
Has a bit of a vindictive streak in her that was probably born out of spite due to her upbringing
Exudes a powerful aura of passive aggressiveness, but is also incredibly kind and magnanimous
Has the ability is summon, manipulate and detect precious minerals, as well as the ability to place curses on them. (This knowledge is confidential and hidden from the public)
Loves her family with all her heart, and literally no one is more protective of Nico than she is
She was the first but also last person to know about Nico's boyfriend (First because she goes to the same school and is not dense, thank you very much, but technically last because she was the last person that Nico officially told since Will is terrified of her for some reason, something about her being 'the FINAL BOSS'; this amuses Hazel to no end).
Has a very cute crush on Frank Zhang, a HS Junior who’s an archer and animal lover (it’s mutual, by the way).
Hades Olympia
CEO of Pluto Corp., one of the largest companies in the mining industry.
#DONE with life and all the people in it, particularly his crazy family
Functions solely on his children, Persephone and caffeine, usually caffeine because the other two are often the cause of his high blood pressure
Broods a lot (”I don’t brood.” “Yes, you do.”)
Deadpan 200% of the time and takes no shit
Loves all his children equally and definitely does not have a favourite (it’s Hazel, in case you’re wondering)
As the eldest son of the three brothers, Hades was betrothed and wed to his childhood best friend Persephone Terrafield by their fathers in an attempt at a business partnership (Spoiler Alert: It didn’t work out in end). Admittedly, Hades and Persephone did have a small infatuation with each other when they were younger, but it never grew into anything serious, and as they grew older he saw her as more of a sibling than a lover and vice versa. After the inevitable death of his father, Hades and Persephone divorced but literally nothing in their relationship changed since they’d never loved each other romantically in the first place. When Hades decided to court their mutual friend, Italian diplomat Maria di Angelo, Persephone supported both of them wholeheartedly. In the span of the seventeen years they were together, Maria gave Hades two beautiful children, Bianca and Nico. Unfortunately, Maria passed away after being on life support for two years in result of a plane crash when Nico was 6.
In the two years when Maria was hospitalized, Hades was so desperate to find his beloved a cure that he sought out a witch doctor that was rumoured to be in New Orleans. Marie Levesque, the aforementioned witch, was a greedy, manipulative person with a deluded and unstable mind, who drugged Hades and essentially raped him because she thought his spawn would have the perfect blood for experimenting magic on. She used magic to wipe his memory of the previous night’s events and handed him an ‘antidote’ that was actually just water dyed a milky white. After ten years, Marie finally revealed to Hades a 12-year-old Hazel, who looked miserable, was suffering from malnutrition, wounds, burns etc. and had a supernatural ability which Marie proudly said she had bestowed to her via dark magic. Hades was absolutely mortified, revolted and a bunch of other things. He filed a lawsuit against Marie, charging her for rape, child neglect, child abuse and human experimentation, as well as taking permanent custody over Hazel Levesque (now Hazel Olympia).
Persephone Terrafield
CEO of jewelry enterprise The Red Pomegranate which was a sub-branch of Pluto Corps. The enterprise has the highest production rate in the US.
Self-designated matchmaker for Hades (Hades always tells her she should focus on her own love life first, but he’s just an ungrateful brat)
Current life goal is to fulfill Maria di Angelo’s dying wish: help Hades find love again. (Mission status: still at Square 1 because Hades has some trust issues after the Levesque Incident)
The kids all call her ‘Aunt Seph’, but she loves the children as though they were her own
She and Hades often joke that they would totally still be married if they didn’t see each other as siblings and platonic soulmates and she hadn’t had her sexual awakening of being lesbian.
She lives with Hades and the children as she finds it too much of a hassle to move into her own place, not to mention lonely (with the kids at school and doing club activities, someone needs to make sure Hades gets exposure to the sun anyway).
Persephone is the daughter of an unnamed businessman and Demeter Terrafield, an agricultural revolutionist and healthy-cereal-obssessed woman.
Her mother and Hades have this sort of weird rivalry going on whenever Demeter visits; Demeter hates Hades because he hates healthy cereal, and apparently anyone who hates healthy cereal isn’t good enough to be hanging around her daughter, so she always replaces all his coffee with decaf and puts the healthiest cereal she can find on his bedside table every morning; in retaliation, Hades will deliberately eat the most sugary sweets he can find in front of her and locks her out of their personal greenhouse. (The glass walls are made of the strongest glass he could find and the door is locked by multiple manual and digital locks.)
Hestia Olympia
CEO of WarmHearth Interior Design Agency (WHIDA)
Everyone's favourite person, indefinitely
Has the infinite patience of a goddess
Gentle, kind, very wise, gives great advice
The kids call her ‘Aunt Tia’
Often fondly exasperated by her younger brothers' antics (because no, just because they’re grown men now does not mean they are going to stop their childhood feuds since despite their protests, they are all petty AF), but once she snaps, they all line up like toy soldiers and behave nicely.
Knits a lot. Most of her carpets, quilts, bags, scarves etc. are handmade.
She looks relatively innocent, but don't be fooled. There's a hidden arsonist in her that is always ready to come out when she's angry.
Hestia has a 'I'm not mad, just extremely disappointed and upset' Mom Look that has sent people bawling their eyes out and begging for her forgiveness with just one glance
She is the oldest of the Olympia siblings, but as a child had a frail and weak body. Kronos wanted to get rid of her since she was 'useless and couldn't be wed off', but Rhea, their mother, begged and pleaded Kronos to let her live. For some unknown reason, Kronos complied.
Her brothers are all very protective of her
YOU DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, MAKE HER ANGRY

The 10 not-to-miss Archaeological Sites in Greece
In the aftermath of the fire that passed right through the archaeological site of Mycenae (fortunately the site wasn’t irreparably destroyed, it was mostly smoked) here are 10 of the most important / standard archaeological sites to see in Greece. These aren’t even a tenth of the sites Greece has to offer, neither are recently discovered important sites that  have yet to open to the public included in this list, but this is the list of the places to get started from, either because they are very informative or because they typically attract the majority of tourists.
1. Acropolis, Athens
The standard first stop of every tourist arriving in Greece and yet, Greeks frequently fall into two categories; those who see it every day and those who have yet to visit it. On the Acropolis (which means Edge of the City) one can see the Propylaea (the monumental gateway), the Temple of Nike, the Erechtheion with the Caryatids, which is a temple dedicated to both Athena and Poseidon and, lastly, the Parthenon which is the most important landmark of Greece. Parthenon was the temple dedicated to Athena, the patron Goddess of Athens. A walk to the Acropolis should be ideally combined with a visit to the New Acropolis Museum nearby.
Tumblr media
2. Delphi, Phocis
The archaeological site of Delphi is located at Phocis, nestled in Mount Parnassus. It is a shrine dedicated mostly to Apollo and this was also where the most famous oracle of antiquity functioned. Nowadays, the visitor can see the ruins of Apollo’s Temple, treasuries from various cities, the most important one being that of Athens, the ancient theater, the ancient gymnasium, the Castalian spring and the Tholos of Athena Pronaia. The exploration is not complete without a visit to the Museum of Delphi.
Tumblr media
3. Ancient Olympia, Elis
This is where the Olympic Games were founded and took place. Nowadays, it is still the location where the Olympic Flame is lit every four years. Afterwards, the Olympic Flame travels from Olympia around Greece, then it arrives to the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens and from there it travels to the previous and then the next host city of the Olympic Games. Visitors there can see the ruins of the temple of Zeus, the temple of Hera, the Stadium, the Palaestra (the wrestling school) and much more. The beautiful statues have been removed from the site and are exhibited in the Museum of Olympia. There you can also see the famous Nike of Paionios and Hermes of Praxiteles.
Tumblr media
4. Knossos, Heraklion
Knossos was the capital of the Minoan civilization (3000 - 1400 BC) in Crete. The palace of Knossos is associated with numerous Greek myths, such as those of Theseus and the Minotaur and Daedalus and Icarus. The site is notable for its exquisite frescoes that are both beautiful and very informative about the era. The throne hall and the storage rooms are impressive, especially if you consider that this is the first throne room of Europe.
Tumblr media
5. Mycenae, Argolis
Let’s go to the smoked impressive sweetie. The Mycenean civilization flourished right after the Minoan and its base was Mycenae, in mainland Greece. Its most notable king was Agamemnon, who made his way into the Homeric epics and the Greek mythology. At Mycenae visitors can see the Lion Gate, the impressive royal tholos tombs, the king’s halls and much more.
Tumblr media
6. Vergina, Imathia
While Alexander the Great’s tomb remains a world mystery, his father’s King Philip fortunately is not (99% at least). In Vergina visitors can see the unplundered royal tombs and the palace as well as the artifacts of great importance found in them.
Tumblr media
7. Temple of Poseidon, Cape Sounion
The temple of Poseidon attracts many thousands of visitors annually. Built on the edge of the cliff above the sea, it creates idyllic conditions for photographs, especially at night with full moon.
Tumblr media
8. Messini, Messenia
Messini in Peloponnese is one of the best preserved ancient cities in Greece. One can clearly see the gymnasium, the theater, the stadium, one of the two city gates, the fountain of Arsinoe and many more structures / buildings. Just next to the site is the archaeological museum with all the findings that complete the visitor’s impression of the place.
Tumblr media
9. Lindos, Rhodes island
On a hill next to the sea in the south of Rhodes you can visit the Acropolis of Ancient Lindos and the temple of Lindia Athena. Much later in time, a medieval fortress was built around the ancient acropolis, making the site even prettier.
Tumblr media
10. Epidaurus, Argolis
The most famous theater of antiquity and one of the best preserved. It’s worth a visit not just for the archaeological site itself, but also for its wondrous acoustics. Besides, the theater still operates and certain theatrical plays take place there, where you can attend and feel like you belong to an ancient audience.

This Thursday, we’re throwing it back to May 1958. Sixty-one years ago, almost to the day, the Museum’s Hall of North American Forests opened to the public. The original announcement touted that more than 100,000 hours went into preparing the 12 life-sized “three-dimensional exhibits” that highlight the diversity of forest communities in a range of locations across North America. The hall also presents techniques for protecting our forests. The largest of the dioramas (pictured below) showcases Olympia, Washington’s huge Douglas firs, Sitka spruces, and Pacific silver firs. Visit the Museum to spot the black-tailed deer in the corner of this diorama, peering out from the undergrowth! #tbt #AMNH150 Photo 1: M. This Week in Julie-history: Julie Andrews makes her solo television debut on 8 October 1949
Seventy years ago, the young Julie Andrews realised another major milestone in her budding career when she made her first solo television appearance in a special live broadcast of Radiolympia Showtime on October 8, 1949.*
At the time, British television was still in its infancy and Radiolympia –– an annual trade show held at the sprawling Olympia exhibition centre in London  –– was a major showcase for the new medium (Law, p. 49ff). The 1936 Radiolympia was where the BBC first launched its TV services to the British public and, by 1938, “television was the main feature of the show” (Briggs 1975, p. 537). The outbreak of war in 1939 saw Radiolympia -- as, indeed, the rollout of television -- put on hold for almost a decade. When the show returned in 1947 it “broke all attendance records” with over 450,000 admissions as the postwar British public clamoured for the sense of promissory modernity represented by television and the entertainment broadcast media (Briggs 1979, p. 201).
By the time of the 1949 Radiolympia, an estimated 200,000 British households had a television set with new licenses selling at the rate of 1,000 units per day––an impressive uptake given TV service was still limited to the greater London area (Hilmes, 31). The country was, however, poised to get its first regional relay transmitter near Birmingham in December of that year, bringing TV to a potential new market of 8.5 million viewers across the populous Midlands (Pawley, 366). Consequently, the 1949 Radiolympia shaped up as “[b]iggest drive ever to sell TV to the public” with "every known trick ...employed to glamorize this new entertainment medium” (“British Launching”, 17).
A key attraction provided by the BBC at the 1949 trade fair was a massive television studio –– the biggest in the word, reportedly (Allister, 334) –– overlooked by a glass encased gallery where audiences could “watch rehearsals as well as transmitted performances” (“British Launching”, 17). Dubbed “television’s big shop window”, the BBC studio at Radiolymia hosted an enticing cavalcade of entertainment across the 12 days of the show with everything from fashion parades and cooking shows to dramatic teleplays, ice revues, and even a grand ballet (”The Scanner”, 21) . Inevitably, ‘variety shows’ formed a key element of the line-up with nightly tentpole specials scheduled for the all-important 8:00p.m. slot. These variety programmes showcased a range of acts drawn from across British and even European entertainment, including many performers who loomed large in Julie’s early career such as Pat Kirkwood, Richard Hearne, Peter Brough and Archie Andrews.
The biggest and best variety special was earmarked for the exhibition’s closing night on Saturday 8 October. Titled Radiolympia Showtime, it was all-out star-studded spectacular, hosted by popular radio personality, Wilfred Pickles, and featuring top talent names of the era such as wartime singing sweetheart, Vera Lynn, comedians Leslie Henson and Reg Varney, jazz trumpeter Kenny Baker, beloved music hall comic–– and Julie’s future stage 'Dad’––Stanley Holloway...and, making her solo TV debut, Britain’s ‘prima donna in pigtails’, Julie Andrews.*
Backed by the BBC orchestra under the direction of conductor, Eric Robinson, Julie sang two songs: her juvenile signature aria, the ‘Polonaise’ from Mignon and “I Heard a Robin Singing”, a number she had performed in the earlier Christmas panto, Humpty Dumpty at the London Casino. Given the embryonic status of TV at the time, there wasn't yet an established culture of TV reviews and most press coverage of the show, as of all the broadcasts from Radiolympia, focussed largely on technology and production aspects rather than broadcast content (Madden 1949). The Sketch called Radiolympia Showtime “a large scale spectacle on music hall lines” (Allister, 334), while the Daily Mail noted that “the baby of the show, Julie Andrews, treated audiences to some beautiful singing” (“Last Night”, 4).
It is not known if any record of Julie’s performance in Radiolympia Showtime exists. As a live emission, the broadcast wouldn’t have been recorded as a matter of course but, given its historical significance, it very well may have been filmed either “on set” or as a kinescope. The Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. has a catalogue entry in its film holdings for Radiolympia Showtime (1949) which seems to feature "segments” from the show ––Kenny Baker is listed, for example –– but, whether or not, Julie’s performance is included is unclear. We can but live in hope...
Notes:
* While Radiolympia Showtime was certainly a major step up the career ladder for Julie and helped launch what would become a long association with television, it wasn’t in fact her very first appearance on the small screen. A year earlier, Julie performed on an another BBC variety special, Rooftop Rendezvous on 27 November 1948 (“Rooftop”, 27). For that performance, Julie was billed alongside parents, Ted and Barbara Andrews, so Showtime marked her solo TV debut.

Athens, Greece - June 2019 🇬🇷
Waking up to realise today is the day you gonna see a gig again always makes me super happy. And no matter how many times I've seen Frank Turner within the last seven years, I'm always stoked to see him again. I once more decided to start my day with some good breakfast and made my way to a place called free n easy. I had a tasty quinoa bowl, a cappuccino and fresh orange juice and a little while later all the energy I needed to tackle another warm and sunny day in Athens.
I made my way to the old Olympic Stadium and got lost on purpose in between in the National Garden. It's a beautiful place once created by a princess from Bavaria, Germany who later become Queen of Greece in the 19th century. The garden was opened for the public in 2004, but even a wonderful peaceful place like this let's you know you're in a country with economic problems. There was a little zoo (?) area with goats and sheep and birds, but in between you could also find many empty cages. Also only handful of the many fountains in the park where working and many parts looked just battered.
At some point I made my way to the stadium and payed the reasonable 5€ entrance fee and took the free audio guide that came with it. Walking through this historic and 2000+ year old place was truly breathtaking. The audio guide told me a lot of background facts about the place, some of them are that this stadium is a build with marble and it can hold up to 68.000 people. Which is kinda insane, isn't it? You were also able to walk into the tunnel where athlets were walking from to get in into the stadium and you could see the exhibition of all the former Olympic torches. Although I'm not a fan of Olympia at all, it was pretty impressive to look at.
Another friend of mine from Hamburg recommend the place s.i.x. Dogs to me, so once I've seen everything in the stadium I started to walk into that direction. She wasn't wrong when she described the backyard as an oasis. It was the perfect hipster place and I wish I could have spend more time there. (Tumblr only allows 10 photos per post, but I encourage you to Google that place!) I ordered a homemade lemonade and an avocado toast, uploaded some pictures to Instagram and enjoyed the surroundings.
As the clock was hitting late afternoon, I started to head to the Gazi Music Hall to meet V. As there are not too many gigs happening in Greece, it was kinda interesting to see the security guys getting ready for the doors to open. It took them a long time and plenty re arrangements of the fences to sort things out. And for some obvious reason they delayed the doors for more than 30 minutes. At least I had a funny moment when one of the security guys asked me where I was from and he happily started to talk some bits in German with me. Because did you know? In Greece you can choose between French and German for your second foreign language in school (after English). I think that's really beautiful! Also a big Yay for the venues policy of letting us bring our water bottles inside!
We scored our spots in the front row and waited patiently for Frank to enter the stage. He opened his set wuth "If Ever I Stray", singing it kinda a Cappella in the beginning before joining in with his guitar. It was strange, I didn't expect anyone in the venue to know Frank's lyrics. I didn't expect anyone to sing or dance along, but I also didn't expect a guy standing behind me, squeeking in a really high pitchy voice. As first I wasn't even sure if he loved or hated Frank; he even screamed "Fuck off your fucking mother**ker" once Frank was saying something. It was super weird. But once Ftabm started to sing "The Road" they guy started to stumble around the lyrics and sing along. So I guess it was just his unusual way of expressing his excitement. I tried really hard to ignore him and enjoy the set, but this evening it was really really hard. And I was also annoyed of the amount of people smoking inside the venue. (it's not allowed but nobody really cares)
Once Frank set was over, I managed to get the setlist and handed it over to V.. In the end it was her freaking home show and sometimes you can make someone really happy with a small gesture. We left the front while the stage was set up of the Dropkicks and got many stares from people who just couldn't believe we were just there to see this strange English guy playing the support gig. Well.... We got us a good spot on the balcony and watched the crowd going wild for Dropkick Murphys. Like freaking wild! There was even a flare in the middle of the crowd - in an indoor venue!! Holy shit. The securitys grabbed it quickly but couldn't manage to put it out. It was a mess to watch them handling the situation. I wish I could have seen more of the show as the venue looked amazing and gave an incredible atmosphere. But as everyone was smoking and my lungs still react to too much smoke with me having asthma, I decided to get a cab via Beat and head back to my hotel. I had an early flight to catch anyway! Thessaloniki was about to come next!
