15 Best Websites to Make Money Online
15 Best Websites to Make Money Online
Tumblr media
You don’t always have to spend money to make money. If you want to launch a side gig to generate regular part-time income, or if you’re looking for some quick extra cash, there are websites that can help you do it.
Of course, it depends on your definition of “quick cash.” Sometimes earning fast cash still means putting in a decent time investment. That’s why our list of ways to make money online is in order from approximately the longest time investment to the shortest time investment. Because time is, after all, money.
Consider these top resources to make money online:
Fiverr.com
Upwork.com
Etsy.com
TaskRabbit.com
Merch by Amazon
Neighbor.com
OfferUp.com
Fat Llama
Wonder.com
UserInterviews.com
ThredUp.com
Swap.com
Gazelle.com
CardSell.com
QuickRewards
Depending on whether you’re looking to earn extra money quickly or build a long-term income stream, each of the following websites offers unique advantages (and sometimes disadvantages) tailored to different needs and interests. Read on for more information on each site.

10 Best Part-Time Jobs to Pay the Bills ]
Fiverr
Tumblr media
How it works: This is a popular website that can be helpful for freelancers. Know something about digital animation? You can work for someone who doesn’t have these skills and pick up some extra cash. Even better, you can offer to compile web research for someone.
Highlights: You can make good money from the site, says Dan Bochichio, a web designer and digital strategist in Albany, New York, who runs a small company called Bocain Designs. He says his firm earns $3,000 to $5,000 a month from Fiverr. “To stay ahead of the competition, I make sure my Fiverr profile and gig descriptions are well-written and communicate the value of the services I’m offering. When someone reaches out to me, I make sure to reply as quickly as I can and follow up with the inquiry by asking good questions. A quick but carefully written reply will increase the odds of them hiring you drastically,” Bochichio says.
Drawbacks: Bochichio’s success aside, Fiverr’s name comes from the fact that many people used to work for $5 a task. You can ask for more, but a lot of your prospective clients may expect low rates. Keep in mind, Fiverr takes a 20% commission.
Time investment: Possibly considerable. If you’re asked to create a digital animated short, for instance, that isn’t something you’re going to whip up in 20 minutes. Plus, it may take 14 days for your money to reach your bank account after your work has been approved, although if you are a regular on Fiverr, you may get it in seven days.
Upwork
How it works: Upwork is essentially a meeting site where businesses and freelancers throughout the world can connect and collaborate on certain projects. Businesses hire freelancers for a variety of services, including writing, web design and pretty much any work that can be done on a computer.
Highlights: Upwork takes a commission from 5% to 20%, but the more money you make, the less commission you pay.
Drawbacks: Upwork is popular, so there is a lot of competition on the website, and that can be a real drawback for people who are new to Upwork, says Sacha Darosa, owner of a digital marketing agency in Toronto called The Shirtless Web Guy.
“Before I started my business in web design, I created profiles on websites such as Upwork. In the beginning it was a struggle to attract any attention from buyers on those platforms because there’s so much competition. And much of the competition was from overseas, which made it impossible for me to compete with others on price,” he says.
Darosa lowered his prices, and for a while he was working for next to nothing. But the positive feedback made his profile look better, and Darosa began charging more.
“Although platforms like Upwork can be helpful in building a portfolio and initial client base, I am glad to be off them and on my own,” Darosa says.
Time investment: As with Fiverr, you may be working for days or a week or so. If you’re tasked with creating someone’s website, that may take a little time. Then after your work has been approved, it can take 10 days to get paid. If you’re working regularly for someone, you may be able to get paid weekly.
Etsy
Tumblr media
How it works: If you’re an artistic person who can make custom jewelry or refrigerator magnets, Etsy is the place to sell your products.
Highlights: It’s easy to navigate the site and set up a shop.
Drawbacks: There’s a lot of competition on Etsy. On one hand, a lot of people know about Etsy. But once you put up your wares, as with Upwork and Fiverr, you are among scores of people selling stuff on Etsy. It may feel a little overwhelming.
Time investment: How fast does it take you to make custom jewelry or refrigerator magnets? You’ll work at your own pace, so depending what you make or sell, it could take a week, or it could take a couple hours. Generally, you get your money about three days after your point of sale. After three months on Etsy, you’ll start getting paid the next business day.
TaskRabbit
Tumblr media
How it works: Are you willing to get your hands dirty? People come to this site to find those willing to do various tasks, such as putting together a bookcase, cleaning out a garage or running an errand. Do as many tasks as you want, and this could become quite the part-time (or full-time) job.
Highlights: You can apply for tasks, but you can also create a profile, explaining what tasks you’re skilled at, and people may seek you out for work.
Drawbacks: A lot of the tasks you’ll find on TaskRabbit are, as noted, physical — like setting up furniture. Of course, if that’s your jam, that’s a plus.
Time investment: Plan on several hours. Generally, these tasks aren’t huge time investments. Payments are usually approved within 24 hours of task completion, and you can expect the money to land in your bank account three to five days later.
Merch by Amazon
Tumblr media
How it works: John Frigo, an affiliate manager for a website called MySupplementStore.com, says he sometimes makes money on the side by creating designs for T-shirts. He also sells on Merch by Amazon as well as other platforms like Redbubble.com.
Highlights: Frigo says you can simply upload your designs to Merch by Amazon and get paid. “Graphic designers can upload T-shirt designs and at that point it’s pretty much entirely passive, and you’re paid a royalty for every one of your designs that sell — but you don’t have to handle returns, do any customer service or ship anything,” Frigo says.
Drawbacks: You probably won’t get rich. For instance, Merch by Amazon offers examples of royalty prices, and for a T-shirt that sells for $15.99, the royalty would be $2.21. Still, once the hard work — designing the piece — is done, it’s easy money. If somebody buys your T-shirt, that is.
Time investment: Let’s assume at least a few hours. Maybe you’re an artist who can knock designs out in a hurry. Maybe you take weeks. But for most people, logic would suggest you should put aside a few hours. As for when you see your money, assuming you’re doing a brisk business selling your products, you could get paid once a month.
Neighbor
Tumblr media
How it works: Do you have storage space in your house? Or maybe an empty garage or storage shed? You could rent out these spaces on Neighbor.com, which is sort of like Airbnb for the self-storage industry. You set your own prices, and the person who rents your space will pay Neighbor.com a service fee.
Highlights: You’re paid via direct deposit, or you can receive a debit card at the end of the month. There are fees subtracted from your payment for using Neighbor.com: a processing fee of 4.9% of the total reservation plus 30 cents per monthly payout.

All I will say tonight is that I am so incredibly proud of our guys and how great of a season they had with all the adversity they went through, which was A LOT. There’s a lot we have to work on but that’s okay. Cant make it every year. Things happen. We’ll take it, learn from it, and move on. We’re gonna come back from this and come into next season even harder!
Thank you to Jake for showing how good of a QB he is and I pray and pray that he gets a starting job next season because it is so well deserved. He killed it!
Can’t wait to have you back, Joseph🫶🏻
Here’s to (I hope to Jesus) a healthy team, a new OLine that doesn’t collapse like someone’s blood sugar who is in the 50s, NFL officials’ and Roger Goodell’s downfall, a fantastic season and a beautiful Lombardi trophy to bring home to Cincy in the new year of 2024! (Or technically 2025 for that Lombardi🤭)
Happy New Year and WHO DEY🧡🖤

The scene where Olin tries to dissuade Mike from going into Room 1408 is so good. Both Samuel L. Jackson & John Cusack play well off each other as Olin goes from trying to bribe Mike to outright intimidating him with the room's macabre past. It does a great job in building dread as to what the hell kind of room 1408 is to warrant these mysterious deaths.

Question so out of all the things you and your crew are having fun in development what is the most fun?
Puppit: Definitely sprite work for me. I love making their expression!
Khimer: coding is simply not fun. that's not a dig or a complaint that's just a rock fact. That said, I haven't done much yet but implementation's simple enough to be about as fun as coding can feasibly be. I imagine once I get around to making the music that's gonna take the cake tho!
Olin: I literally just joined yesterday but so far I really like working with everyone here especially knowing that it’s a really functional group that are actually trying to get this done-
Scott: I like my job of coloring It's nice to help the process along and be like "aheehehe, I helped with that, I gave it the pretty colors"
Cas: Ooo, I’d say adding the blushes on the sprites :3 just getting to help and contribute/all the behind the scenes stuff is always fun but out of the actual work of rendering it’s the blushes hands down. It makes the characters look so cute! Melody: I love Script Streams where I'm writing the scripts while sharing my screen and testing out lines on the other team members. Hearing them squeal and absolutely collapse from what I write is an absolute joy, and it gets better sharing that with our test audience. Managing turned out to be something I'm really good at, too! I apparently have a knack for whipping up solutions, schedules, and making sure everyone's running at a capacity they can handle to avoid burnout! In summary: Everyone seems to love their jobs and having a dedicated team committed to seeing this project through to completion.

Sergio
Tumblr media
art by @xxx-ashhazard-xxx
"I don't know you, and you don't know me. Let's keep it that way fa both our sakes."
Name: Sergio Salvadora
Age: 25
Height: 5'2"
Weight: 120 lbs
Species: Cat
Physical description: Short, wiry, very mild definition in his upper arms, over two dozen cut marks around his torso with patchy fur around them, predominantly orange fur with dark stripes from the top of his head down to his tail; white fur from his snout down to his inner thighs, pinkish-red "beans" on his hands and feet
Background from Mason's perspective: Born and raised in Harlem, New York, to Demetrius and Geraldine Salvadora. Geraldine was a nurse in a large Manhattan hospital, while Demetrius struggled to hold down any one job. Records indicate a conjugal visit between the Salvadoras roughly nine months before Sergio was born.
Demetrius was killed in a bout of gang violence the day Sergio turned 7 years old. Agent Bonita Salvadora of SIN claimed that Geraldine didn't want anyone from Demetrius's side of the family to contact her or her son.
Between the ages of 12 to 15, Sergio had scattered reports of delinquency and truancy on his record, from alleged pickpocketing and shoplifting to vandalism. His teachers in middle school noted that he had developed a brash streak, a few even saying he was "incorrigible." Despite this, he showed promise in mathematics and economics classes.
There are hazy reports of Sergio having joined a street gang known as the Sixth Street Clique, who notably initiated a gunfight with rival gang South Side Vipers. Everyone in the latter gang was reported dead, whereas the Sixth Street Clique was all either gunned down or arrested...save for one, who managed to escape the police. Surviving gang members mentioned Sergio's name during interrogations, but the case had gone cold before anything could stick.
Sergio was made a ward of the state and got his GED through private tutoring. When he was 18, he signed on with the Specialized Laborers of New York, a local worker's union that provided aid to myriad professions, blue- and white-collar. He started working for Olin's Repossession at 18 and stayed for three years, then became a taxi driver after the owner of Olin's Reposession had died under unknown circumstances. He then went on to drive for Chariot, a ride-sharing company that quickly took cities like New York by storm.
Rumors have spread about the Laborers being more than a workers' union, with scattered reports of kidnapping, extortion, and murder. The police haven't found anything that could stick, but there is also no telling if the Laborers have some officers in their pocket. We have found no connections between the Laborers and the aetherial, so we are currently leaving any issues regarding them to the mundane law enforcement. Sergio doesn't seem to be aware of his family's vampire hunting business due to his father's separation from the rest of his family, according to Agent Salvadora. We will allow her to keep tabs on him and to give SIN, and by extension us, updates on his whereabouts and exploits.

Caps from a deleted scene in the movie Awake 2007 with Hayden Christensen, Lena Olin and Jessica Alba
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Poor Clay was scared to tell his mother about Sam. Yes I think he should have told her sooner about Sam, but I understand why they kept their relationship from her. It was because he knew how controlling his mother was and he was afraid to disappoint her. I wish they kept this scene in the movie because it really shows his mother being really strict, overbearing and a bit mean to Sam when she finds out about their relationship. This scene does a good job leading to the end of the movie when we learn that his mother was actually very kind, strong willed and loving deep inside. She just had a hard time trusting people which I don't blame her because of her past and she was right about Sam all along.
Clay was kind and loving as well, but he was stubborn and very naive considering he trusted the wrong people over his mother who was just trying to protect him. Clay was sheltered his whole life, so he probably didn't understand how cruel people can be and someone like him could easily get taken advantage of. One, he had money and two, he was sick and sheltered his whole life. People like him are easy targets for cruel people like Sam. His mother actually knew what the real world was like and she was trying to protect him from getting taken advantage of and hurt in the end. She was also afraid to lose him because of his condition. I like the part of the movie when Clay and his mother see each other for the last time in their after life, and his mother encourages him to continue to live, and that he was strong and could follow his own path even with knowing how difficult it will be for him since he is unfortunately traumatized now.
This movie is a bit intense and very sad to watch, but does have good life lessons. Always trust the people who care and love you for who you are and the ones who look out for your best interest. However it's also important to trust yourself and make the best decisions you can for yourself in life.

I assume you are an evening person and not a morning person. The type who stays up after midnight and in the morning is "don't talk to me before I've had my morning coffee" . You're also artistic.
No, I'm actually not an evening person nor a morning person haha, I just have fucked up my sleep schedule 😭 (not even my summer job could save me... I got up at 6am while having gone to bed at like midnight </3 there are too many distractions for me in this world)
And yes, I am artistic <3 lukiossa olin kuvataidelinjalla haha

Are viveka’s parents still alive? Who are their favroite grandkids lol
Im also curious on what Viveka’s mom was like
Tumblr media
Viveka’s parents are still alive, as are her grandparents.
And while Viveka is a shitty father, she’s not nearly as bad as her own parents.
She would receive corporal punishment when she got things wrong.
Vanja meanwhile was shoved to the side like a true middle child. She did make it her job to shield Aune from all the drama in the home.
And Aune was the darling baby girl who could do no wrong.
Which is why their favorite grandchild is Oline. Which will end up biting Oline in the ass real soon. Their least favorite is sadly Eira. They think she’s a complete failure. But they will definitely be overjoyed after hearing about her and Helga.
Oh and as for the other side of the family mainly having names with a Y, that’s one hundred procent inspired by an annoying rich family who’s names all start with a K 😉

What words would you personally use to describe the word "friendship" in toki pona? Do you think "olin" is sufficient here? Or maybe "jan pona" (friend) does a good enough job at conveying the message?
i often use the lexicalized "jan pona" (good person) for clarity--but i don't think that it captures the nuances of friendship. as i see it, "jan pona" refers to someone who you view as good, regardless of their personal relationship to you. i think that "jan olin" (love-person) is a better way to describe friends than "jan pona".
the concept of "friend" as it exists in english-speaking american culture doesn't exist in toki pona, and i think one of the reasons that one might use "jan pona" is to illuminate oxymorons like "a bad friend". however, i don't think that jan pi toki pona should define friendship in a way that removes personal relationships, which is imo the most important part of friendship. friendship isn't just the view you have of someone, it's the relationship and history you have with them.

QuiObi BB: I'm Asking Life for a Second Chance
Hello All!
I'm so excited to finally be able to share this with everyone! I was a participant in this year's QuiObi Big Bang (@qobb2022) along with my fantastic artists, Dani (@shukruut) Kurt (@kurtssingh), and Bere (@weillschmidtdoodles). They did an absolutely fantastic job making art for the story and I was so glad to be able to work with them!
Today the first half of the story is going up with Bere and Kurt's art and I'll be making another post tomorrow with the second half of the fic and the wonderful Dani's artwork, so please enjoy the first six chapters of I'm Asking Life for a Second Chance!
Please check them out if you get a chance and let me introduce you to the story that they helped to bring to life.
Title: I'm Asking Life for a Second Chance Fandom: Star Wars - All Media Types, Star Wars Prequel Trilogy Rating: Explicit Warnings: Choose Not To Use Archive Warnings Relationships: Qui-Gon Jinn/Obi-Wan Kenobi Characters: Obi-Wan Kenobi, Qui-Gon Jinn, Anakin Skywalker, Dooku, Jocasta Nu, Quinlan Vos, Tahl, Yoda, Jabba the Hutt, Padmé Amidala, Ferus Olin, Ahsoka Tano Additional Tags: Alternate Universe- Star Wars, Modern Era, Park Ranger Qui-Gon Jinn, Teacher Obi-Wan Kenobi, Suicide Attempt, Suicidal Thoughts, Self-Destructive Obi-Wan Kenobi, Obi-Wan Kenobi Has Self-Esteem Issues, Angry/Hurting Obi-Wan Kenobi, Past Drug Addiction, Thoughts of Relapse, Minor Character Death, Addiction Replacement, 9/11 References, Mentioned Homophobia, Angst with a Happy Ending
Summary:
Something about it felt a little bit easier than it should have.
The water rushing below the footbridge seemed so soft in the fading rays of the sun. The crystal clear blue water was fading to shades of plum and indigo below him as the last of the sun dipped below the horizon.
The air felt a little cooler as Obi-Wan watched the day turn to night, feet swinging off the footbridge as he listened to the sound of cicadas starting.
He thought vaguely that this path was probably frequented by the sort of animals you wouldn’t want to run into but then he supposed it didn’t actually matter.
He scooted closer, letting his legs hang fully off the bridge as he tangled his fingers into the frayed netting next to where he was sitting.
It just looked so…easy.
The water looked so inviting and the air around him was a sticky warmth so surely the coolness of it would feel like a relief. It didn’t actually look that far if Obi-Wan really thought about it. It seemed like…
“It’s a beautiful night isn’t it?”
Obi-Wan looked up to see a man standing at the edge of the footbridge, only a few feet away from where he was sitting, pack slung over one shoulder.
Obi-Wan runs away to a small town to escape some of his biggest problems. Down on his luck and ready to throw in the towel, he finds a man who just might make life worth living.
Qui-Gon is a park ranger with a nine-year-old kid, a dead wife, and a fine-tuned intuition. While patrolling at night he meets a man who could use some help.
Neither of them expects their occasional random meetings to intertwine their lives forever, but fate has something in store for the two of them.

Holy fucking shit I forgot about this account. I don’t use tumblr anymore bc of all the bots and it’s not my vibe anymore but as I said before I wish to post more journal entries or life updates on here for myself. Looking back has been crazy. I got diagnosed with bpd this year and looking back on all these entries good lord it makes sense. I am also a lot more humble and less naive than before. But that just comes with age. You don’t feel infinite, unstoppable as you grow older or at least I haven’t. I feel more humbled. I didn’t know shit and I thought I knew so much haha. I still don’t know a whole lot though, and I’m gonna keep fucking up. I’m hoping to get into therapy soon and good god I hope it fixes me. I know that’s not a good way to phrase it but I hope it does. I am miserable. And I would like to continue on with my life. Finish school and get a job to support myself. Get my own place and pay for my own shit. I’m living with olin right now which is fine because he’s amazing but yeah. Anyways. It’s 7am and I gotta get some sleep. Lol.

This is Finnish poet Eino Leino's century-old poem about Ukraine.

Ukrainian version

Another composition sung by protesters at the Russian embassy in Helsinki a year ago
youtube
Here are Finnish lyrics and an English singable version. And here's what I aimed my Toki Pona version to sound like, with some notes on the translation:
Ukraine, cry out loud,¹¹ for a peaceful new day is dawning! Your strength and love can demand and build¹ a free² country.³ Ukraine, do not falter, wait for a good future.⁴ Hold steady/stay free, banish the evil, use your fiery power.
Ukraine is beautiful and strong and showed⁵ the way for us all. Many other countries⁶ are by your side in this terrible darkness. Ukraine, you are not lowly, you can be your own master. Grand singing of all the world gives you strength in the battle.⁷
Ukraine is fascinating⁸ and great. Sunlight dances on her waters. Freedom² is coming to the nations of Russia⁶, new purple flowers are growing. The time has come. We can smash Russian rule.⁹ Ukraine, light up the road of democracy.¹⁰
¹ 'wile e, pali e' may be a little nasin nasa.
² Since there is no dedicated word for freedom, I just put pona. It can mean any positive thing here, not just freedom, the meaning won't change much.
³ The original poem rhymes with rhyming lines alternating. Since TP has such a tiny vocabulary, rhyming is hard. I made my job easier by only making half-assed one-vowel rhymes half of the time.
⁴ Upcoming dawn of the nations = good future. Yeah I know, boring.
⁵ I didn't know how to say show, so I used pali, as in 'paved the way'.
⁶ Naming all the same countries as the original would have taken too much syllable space.
⁷ Original is "Can you hear the choir, that is grand and graceful like a sea of fierce nations?" The video I linked translated kauhtuva as fading, but that doesn't make sense in this context, so I trust that torillatavataan's translation (fierce) is more correct. I didn't know how to say more or less the same thing, so I took the music (choir), grandness and nations and made some lines about the world cheering for Ukraine. Hopefully that isn't too far off.
⁸ Can musi convey enchantment or fascination? I hope it doesn't come off as 'silly' or 'frivolous'.
⁹ The original looks like it's mainly about abolishing the monarchy, but tsardom is hard to explain in few words and ending Russian rule also works.
¹⁰ 'lawa sama pi jan ali' sounds more like direct democracy than a republic with representative democracy, but I needed a rhyme with Lusi.
¹¹ Edit: earlier I wrote 'sing loudly' but it sounds wrong actually. Idk how to say in English what kalama suli here means to me

Last Jedi: Against the Empire / Master of Deception
Some quotes from the eighth and ninth Last of the Jedi books - Against the Empire and Master of Deception by Jude Watson - AKA ‘the extended tales of how everything would have been fine if people had just listened to Ferus’…
--
It was why Ferus Olin had grown from a petty nuisance to a problem. It wasn't Ferus so much - he was insignificant - but the memories that leaked in when he was around. Looking at Ferus reminded Darth Vader of Anakin Skywalker. Before Ferus he had been able to think of Anakin as another person entirely.
He had derived so much satisfaction from killing Roan Lands. He hadn't planned it, but the opportunity had presented itself, and it had been the perfect solution. He had taken from Ferus what had been taken from him. He had vanquished his enemy and brought him down.
It had been so easy. He had felt so satisfied.
--
Obi-Wan appeared in holo-mode in only seconds. His beard was streaked with more silver, and deep lines etched his cheeks.  "I haven't heard from you in awhile," he said.
"You don't look so good," Ferus said.
"Charming as ever," Obi-Wan said. "I could say the same. What's going on?"
"Roan is dead."
The spasm on Obi-Wan's face told him how deeplv the news had struck him.
"How?"
"Vader."
Obi-Wan looked off. Ferus tried to imagine what he saw. The dirt and rocks of Tatooine. The dust of his exile.
"I'm sorry," Obi-Wan said.
--
"Thugger's Alley, in the Orange District," Vader continued. "You might have known the one in charge - he had been friendly with the Jedi. Dexter Jettster, his name was."
"Was?"
"His hideout was destroyed. Everyone inside was killed."
Shock and grief tore through him. But now was not the time. It was time to hit Vader back. "When I mentioned Mustafar to you the other day, I fear I upset you.”
The Dark Lord must have been prepared for him to bring it up. He didn't give off any ripple of concern.
"Save your fears for yourself," he said instead.
It happened instantaneously. Ferus felt as though the top of his head had blown off. It was immediate and visceral. Every clue clicked into place, every suspicion, every nagging sense that he was missing something important.
They had stood outside the council room together. "I'm afraid for you. You think admitting you were wrong opens you up to attack, " Ferus had said. He still felt shellshocked and strange from his conference with the Jedi Masters. He still couldn't believe that he had just resigned from the Jedi Order.
Anakin's lip had curled. "/ think you should save your fears for yourself."
Darth Vader was Anakin Skywalker. He didn't know how he knew it, but he knew it. Reeling, Ferus stood next to Vader as the Emperor approached them. Clouds had rolled in like a great gray carpet; a storm was brewing. The thickness of the air and the coming storm seemed to give a hard charge to the atmosphere.
Ferus felt the blast of the Emperor's fury, though he remained calm. Palpatine came straight to Vader.
"A trap," he said. He looked over at the people, who were now turning away, and added in a terrifying whisper, "I could kill them all, if I wanted"
"There is nothing stopping you, Master," Vader said.
"You should remember that we are being monitored Someday, yes. Not now."
Darth Vader said nothing. Ferus began to enjoy him-self. He'd never been present while Vader was rebuked by his Master. Anakin had always hated being chided in public. Anakin had always wanted to be the best.
Use it. Use what you know. Bring him down. He is half of what he was.
As if the Emperor had heard the voice as well, he turned to Ferus. The heat left his voice. "But you have done your job well" he said.
Ferus felt Vader's frustration build. If Vader unleashed it, Ferus wondered if he could tear the space-port apart.
The Emperor smiled. "It is time for you to take a second-in-command, Lord Vader" he said, chuckling. "And I think Ferus Olin is perfect for the job."

1408 (2007)
Tumblr media
Creative, scary and very fun, 1408 may lose some steam towards its conclusion but it doesn't have to. With four alternate endings available, the right "version" is just waiting for you to find it.
Cynical horror author Mike Enslin (John Cusack) travels from one supposedly haunted hotel to the next, collecting material for his next book. His next stop is room 1408 at the Dolphin, a New York City hotel. Its manager, Gerald Olin (Samuel L. Jackson), begs him not to enter. He warns Mike that no one has lasted more than an hour inside 1408.
This is a horror film with many frightening and/or unsettling scenes. As Olin attempts to convince Enslin not to enter the room, to take pictures in a similarly-laid out room, take the many reports of unusual deaths in 1408 and just make something up, we catch snippets of the strange events that have occurred within the walls. Chills will run down your snipe. You run your hand around your neck to make sure there isn't anything amiss there and you shift in your seat. In the next scene, you'll be surprised to find yourself laughing. Enslin never runs out of smart comments to blurt out and always has something sarcastic to say. He’s set in his ways. No matter what he sees, he's determined to prove to himself that what he is seeing is a trick. Every other haunted hotel he's been to is little more than a tourist trap. Room 1408 must be too. The fact that they don’t advertise it as haunted punches a big hole in his theory, but he insists on finding reasons to stay and by the time he, like you, realizes this is no ordinary place… it’s too late. 1408 wants to kill Enslin. Specifically, it wants to torment him until he chooses to leave – via suicide.
I can't imagine anyone in this role besides John Cusack. He’s perfect for the part. You like him but his mean streak also makes you a little happy to see him knocked down a peg. That's until 1408 just takes it too far with its sick sense of humor. Now, you want him to make it out alive again.
There are many great scenes as the room projects illusions or simply changes itself to grind away at our protagonist’s sanity. The best is when Mike looks out his window and sees another room, just like his, occupied by a visitor whose situation is just as dreadful. This moment and others are memorable, masterfully done and, unfortunately, mostly concentrated in the movie's first half. I saw the director’s cut and you can’t help but feel a little cheated at its soft conclusion. This is a horror movie. It's ok to be left disturbed after the end credits! Still, Mikal Håfström does a great job expanding upon the short story by Stephen King. Pay close attention. You’ll notice that each ordeal reflects a circle in Dante Alighieri’s vision of Hell and simultaneously reflects the different stages of grief.
Psychologically disconcerting, well acted, frightening and even funny at times, 1408 is a great horror film. I’d rate it higher but honestly, I can't recommend the cut I’m reviewing. My vote is for the original theatrical version (deemed "too much of a downer" but I disagree) but any other than the default one found on the Director's Cut caps the picture nicely. It may sound like a lot of work to track down the "correct" version of 1408, but it's worth it. (Director’s Cut on Blu-ray, November 16, 2018)
