Was rewatching some cutscenes for Zhongli about the perfumes that were made for Guizhong.

This is a smut story loves.

Kidney beans

Vegetable oil

Onion

Celery stalks

Vegetable stock

Chopped tomatoes

Parsley

Paprika

Salt and pepper

Canned beans might work well if you dont want to soak overnight, just thoroughly rinse and dry them first. And for ya dumplin's-

Rolled oats

Breadcrumbs (preferably whole wheat)

Parsley

Margarine

Cheddar Cheese

Do be careful making these, the dish caked to the pan like ive never seen anything before.

. The dumplings dont have a measurement for the salt, I did what felt right and I'd say it came out to maybe ¼ cup salt? . Water measurement for dumplings is way way too little, do the tablespoons and then also half cup. . Where margarine called for, used butter

It gives off the air of when your children complain about taco tuesdays, but they cant cook for themselves and your partner refuses to learn, so you pick something out from pinterest that says "Healthy Veggie Sunday Dinner Done in 10 Minutes!". Its not bad in the traditional sense, its bad in the sense that it brings not much good. This may partially be a neurodivergent thing but the amount of soft textures just fucks with my brain.

I feel like I'm eating joker mush. The cheese is a nice touch though!

From start time to serving time, it took about 2 hours, but that could be cut down with experience. I would highly recommend either cooking the parsley dumplings separately and then adding per serving, or serving and eating immediately, because they Will get soggy and they Will fall apart over time.

 The flavor itself is very nice and savory, the more salt  you add the more itd taste like meat I think! As usual, please do feel free to add more spices than listed. I could see smoked paprika, cumin, and sautéd spinach going enhancing this a fair bit. I think if I were to make this in the future i would fry the dumplings before adding them in with the soup, to give it more texture and 'body'.

I give this recipe a wham-bam-ghost-you-ma'am of 3/10 (with 1 being food that makes one physically sick and 10 being food that gives one a lust for life again.) And now back to our show...

Bean Soup Ingredients:

1/2 cup dried white beans

1/2 cup dried kidney beans

4 teaspoons vegetable oil

1 1/2 cups (1 large) sliced onion

2 celery stalks, chopped

1 garlic clove, crushed

1 1/2 cups (4 ounces) sliced mushrooms

2 green bell peppers, seeded and chopped

1 cup vegetable stock (or 1 cup water and 1/2 cube vegetable bouillon)

1 can (14 ounces) chopped tomatoes

1 tablespoon chopped parsley

1 teaspoon paprika

Salt and pepper, to taste

Parsley Dumpling Ingredients:

1 cup rolled oats

1/2 cup breadcrumbs (preferably whole wheat)

2 teaspoons chopped parsley

1/4 cup margarine

1/2 cup grated Cheddar cheese

Soup Method:

To make the soup, soak the dried beans in water overnight.

Drain the soaked beans and transfer them to a large pot. Add water to cover and bring to a boil. Boil the beans for 15 minutes, then reduce the heat and simmer until the beans are completely cooked, 40 to 50 minutes more. Drain.

In a large, preferably nonstick frying pan over medium heat, warm the oil. Add the onion, celery and garlic and cook, stirring, for 5 minutes. Add the mushrooms and peppers and cook, stirring occasionally, for 3 more minutes.

Add the beans, stock, tomatoes, parsley and paprika. Season with salt and pepper.

Bring to a boil, cover partially, and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Dumplings Method:

To make the dumplings, stir together the oats, breadcrumbs, parsley and salt in a bowl. Add the margarine and rub it into the dry ingredients with your fingers until evenly distributed. Stir in 2 to 3 tablespoons of cold water, until the mixture just forms a dough.

Form the dough into twelve 1 '/2-inch round dumplings. Add the dumplings to the bean mixture and reduce the heat to low. Simmer, covered, turning the dumplings after 10 minutes, until they are cooked through, another 20 to 25 minutes.

Sprinkle with the grated cheese and serve.

Fun little ask, what are your fav perfumes or colognes?

I'm one of those people who need to match their fragrance to their outfit and vibe. 🙈 So it's not enough for me to have one fragrance or even a family of fragrances, I need to have one for every occasion. 🤦‍♂️

That being said, one of my go-tos has to be Diorissimo by Dior (obvs, lol), since it contains every white flower imaginable on the planet and I simply adore the scent of white flowers - lilies of the valley, hyacinths, jasmine, lilac, I love it. I have many white-flower-based perfumes; they are well-tolerated and appropriate for many situations. Elie Saab - Le Parfum is similar to this.

But I wouldn't be me if I wasn't on some oddball shit! So I'm really drawn to vintage perfumes - that cloying, heady, powdery smell of opening an old lady's handbag, of vintage makeup and sweets. The smell of lipstick I find very attractive (I think it's given by the iris note), so, for example, I wear Dior - Homme, even though I wish it'd be stronger. (I'm also one of those oversprayers who wants to leave a scent trail when I walk. 😅) The classic Agent Provocateur is another example - a very heavy, slutty rose* with an intoxicating presence that makes you cough - very powdery, very reminiscent of a boudoir - the kind of scent Satine from Mouline Rouge might wear. Loulou by Cacharel is literally how old ladies smelt like when I was a little girl, so ofc I overspray that, too. My neighbour who lives on the ground floor says she can tell I left because she can smell it in the hallway. ☠ It's very hard to describe, something like plum with wood? and incense with a white floral background. It's very, very 90s. Just an amalgamation that's very hard to separate but very distinctive. Other stuff I have and enjoy from this category are Angel by Mugler, which is similarly hard to define because it seems to have every note in existence, with a powdery finish + Cabotine by Gres - very strong, very potent carnation, very green, which may not be to everyone's liking. Loulou & Cabotine are also what I'd describe as pretty unfriendly, unapologetically spiky perfumes; you either love them or you hate them.

I'm going to be basic now for a second, but my first foray into vintage scents was when I whiffed Chanel no 5 in Sephora and I instantly fell for that artificial, cold, standoffish aldehydic smell. I had a bottle of Shalimar back in the day and her sister, Casmir by Chopard, and 10/10 would purchase again. Jungle L'Elephant by Kenzo is also a strong vintage scent, with spicy cloves, dark citrus and amber that shares that heady quality I'm drawn to. For a long time I kept a big bottle of Opium by YSL, which remains the queen of spicy scents to me, it's like all possible condiments condensed into this hegemonic cloud of aroma. The people around you will always know you're wearing this. 😂 Sometime in the future, I would like to try some similar scents like Aromatics Elixir (Clinique), Cinnabar & Youth Dew (Estee Lauder) and Magie Noir by Lancome. Not a priority, but they're on my list. I used to have Fame by Lady Gaga and it smelt very incense-y, which was fine by me, since I love all church smells - myrrh and the like.

I'm very fond of nostalgia scents from my childhood. Weirdly enough, cough syrup. Which is exactly what Egoiste by Chanel reminds me of. :)) Which is why I put it on my list. There's also a recurring motif I keep encountering in my choices - something I associate with my grandmother's house, slightly Oriental, caramel, but somehow also minty. Like all old ladies, she used to keep all kinds of sweets in an ornate bowl - mint drops and other kinds of sucking candy or toffees. And, like all children, I greatly coveted that bowl. Perhaps the saffron note has something to do with this, but it's something I recognise in perfumes like Shaghaf Oud by Swiss Arabian, the oil Tanasuk (Al Haramain) or Herod (Parfums de Marly). As a personal believer in the power of ritual and spirituality, I was more than fascinated to hear the anthropological history of scent as well as the powerful capabilities it holds for healing. However, talking to Hughes genuinely did completely broaden my horizons and bring me a sense of understanding that the future is not so constrictive and that the fluidity and connections I value most are still possible. It was a message I really need to hear, especially in a city where it can sometimes be very easy to get lost. To have an adult that is successful both professionally and spiritually, with a business that’s a direct extension of their passion, was very reaffirming.

The visit consisted of mostly a lecture-style talk on the history of perfumes, the power of scent, and Hughes’s professional background. He worked in menswear for a large number of years before eventually turning his passion for essential oils into an actual perfume business, after studying independently and even in the South of France, in the “perfume capital” of Grasse. 

In his travels, he’s been afforded the opportunity to go far and wide. Studying in France and interacting with the local wildlife, to Italy, to Egypt, to Asia--he’s really smelled it all. I loved hearing about his adventures because it seemed like a much less constrictive view of what a career can be. In terms of competition, Hughes’s price point places him slightly below a lot of the high luxury brands but also above mass-market. His competition is more like smaller, similarly natural brands such as Phleur and Pour Le Monde.

The technicalities of the perfume business were a world I did not quite expect. I don’t often wear perfume (that will probably change now), but I do have some experience with using essential oils and incense for my space. Essential oils are a concentrated scent directly distilled from the plant or source. They are made only directly from natural materials. However, for the parfums and eaus, they are distinguished based off of how much they are diluted. From most to least diluted are eau de cologne (2%-6% concentrated perfume oil), eau de toilette (5%-15% concentrate), eau de parfum (15%-20% concentrate), and parfum (15%-40% concentrated). With these variations in smell come variations in potency, longevity, and scent profile.

As for me, I usually have kept it simple, using a black amber and vanilla lotion. I also like to use essential oils in a diffuser or directly on my body as well. After the lesson, though, I think I’ll probably become a customer of Therapeutate. I loved trying the different scents of rose and jasmine. Out of the perfumes, my favorite was Royal Water, which stayed on me all day. I think I’ll be coming back to it.

Material Ecology in the Symbiocene presents a vision for a regenerative future using alternative bio-sources. These materials, and the ecologies they inhabit, surpass manufactured design through their sustainability, circularity, and adaptability. The work employs varied methodologies to reveal unexpected and complex collaborations between human and non-human species at the intersection of art, material science, and ecology. Blurring the boundaries between the practices of making and growing, audiences are invited to interrogate hierarchies between human and non-human species, culture and nature, and linear and circular economies. The project has been informed by continuous exchanges across multidisciplinary fields- with ecologists, mycologists, and perfumers, alongside a host of non-human species. The workstation is modelled on a children’s mud kitchen, encouraging the idea that audiences’ homes can be transformed into sites of material curiosity. Implementing natural materials in the home also incentivises human inhabitants to have an invested interest in protecting the environment that surrounds the living materials within their homes. Designed with functionality in mind, the structure is easily assembled using screws and wood joints, with an adaptable framework to suit differing needs.

I imagine a future where instead of processing materials, we might grow them directly from living organisms. This stool is grown from mycelium- the vegetative part of the fungus consisting of thread-like filaments. The piece re-engages the sense of smell as a critical factor in the bodily perception of space, initiating a chemical conversation between the fungal scent and the human body.

The installation is accompanied by a publication titled Sea to Soil, which engages with environmental activism, ecology, and sustainability through creative practice. A call for community action, the publication contains a culmination of processes, recipes, and ideas to encourage readers to collaborate with natural materials and living systems, creating experimental artworks and speculative design objects. The publication and its manufacturing processes are 100% vegan, and it is printed on FSC accredited paper using bio-based inks and a CO2 neutral press.

Experiment in formulation

The First Signs of Spring

One of the first signs that winter is ending locally is sugar season. The longer days paired with temperatures above freezing during the day and below at night triggers the sap production in the Maple tree. But the Maple is not the only tree this time of year filling its buds with sticky sap and resin, the Balsam Poplar is also a signifier of spring. Saplings flaunt their buds, distinct sharp and red against the brown and white hues of the winter landscapes, while their taller parents drop fragile branches in harsh spring winds. A powerful aromatic, it’s a signature fragrance when the buds break to leaves and wafts in the warm spring air. But before they do a few are collected, usually infused in oils to make a salve, but I’m excited to expand working with this local spring ally.

Balsam Poplar and Sugar Maple

blend #1 : I wanted to start this exploration with something extremely simple but this also captures quintessential spring here in northern Vermont. I was inspired by a day collecting balsam poplar buds coming home to stoke the fire with a pot of maple sap boiling above.

Test recipe: 1 3/4 tsp sugar maple wood powder, 1/4 tsp balsam poplar buds, 1/16 tsp guar gum, 1/4 tsp maple syrup, 2 tsp water

yield: 5 sticks ≈ 4 inches long, 4 mm thick

I’ve been apprehensive to work with the balsam poplar buds because how sticky they are but after being dried and frozen they were easier to work with than I thought. I was able to grind the buds and return them to the freezer still in the mortar and then process them some more repeating until I had a nice powder to work with. Mixed with the maple woods, binder, and water/syrup the dough was nice and sticky and wet, easy to work with and run through the extruder to make a few skinny sticks.

Now I’ve admitted before that I’m not the biggest fan of the smell of balsam poplar but I’m not letting that deter me from trying it in a new way. I’m interested in formulating more complex blends but I wanted to use this simple recipe as a learning experience and foundation to build off of.

Test burn: the stick burnt with no issues, I was unsure how it would react with the amount of maple syrup used but it was perfect, not too fast and no needing to relight. The smoke was steady and pleasant not over bearing but still generous. The aroma was true to the warm and moist temperament of the balsam poplar. It has saccharine, cinnamon brown sugar top note with a hint of syrupy burnt wood that is enveloped by the scent of kneeling at church pew, resinous, balsamic and woody, frankincense and propolis, pungent, a bit musky with traces of sour wine. There is a mustard like tang (notes a friend), and the smell of dried saliva on skin. The wood base carried the aromatics of this blend exceptionally, whether it be from how they complimented each other or the sure will power of the balsam poplar to shine through but I was glad the fragrance wasn’t lost under a charred wood smell. I also am happy (and pleasantly surprised) with the ratio of poplar buds, it was enough to still be potent but not so much that I actually was able to enjoy its scent quite a lot and if anything I would add a touch more in the next batch. The incense had character giving off different notes as is burnt down the stick but I’m excited to expand on this recipe. I wouldn’t say there was a distinct maple aroma (like boiling sap), but the sweetness is notable and I think a helpful balance complimenting the poplar.

I asked the group of incense crafters for recommended companions so I also might try blending with some of these (their suggestions): lungwort, pine (&conifer) needles, rosemary, clove, vanilla, allspice, cardamom, frankincense, blackberry leaf, mullein

I’m also interested in making a tincture of poplar buds for perfume... perhaps even an absolute. I’ve been told that even after tincturing, the buds are potent enough to use again for incense so why not do both?! (posts on all of that to come!)

Smelling Sweet

Legend has it that Cleopatra was very knowledgeable about the power of scent. Legends say that's Cleopatra seduced Julius Caesar by inviting him on a boat ride down the Nile after getting her handmaidens to scent every corner of the boat with sensual Blue Lotus, Jasmine, rose and myrrh. After that deluge to the senses, Caesar was putty in her hands! Fragrance in the form of incense, scented oils, resins and perfumes has been used for many thousands of years in rituals, as offerings, for healing, to invoke spirits and to cast spells. But the key to getting the magical results you want out of fragrance doesn't just come down to wafting a pretty smell around it's about setting intent, and selecting ingredients fit for the purpose. MIXING IT UP!

There are three levels to every perfume the top or headnote, middle or heart notes and base notes. The relationship between the three of these in any fine fragrance is what causes it's unique smell. As you might expect, the heart and base notes are what linger after this. • 5 drops of lemmongras

• 7 drops of rose

• 5 drops of black pepper

• 6 drops of jasmine

• 4 drops of ginger

• 10 drops of vanilla

LOVE POTION RITUAL

Essential oils have potent mystical powers in their own right, offering a unique connection with angels, Gods and even spirits in the afterlife. But to go from perfume to potion, intent is everything. Perform This easy ritual as you blend up your fragrance, to increase it's power of attraction:

• Create your perfume on Valentine's day (Febuary 14th) alternatively you can create your perfume on a Friday. This is the day of Venus, and in honouring her you can poor loving goddess energy into the bottle along with your oils.

• Cast a magic circle to purify the space you are working in and build up high, positive vibrations. To do this close your eyes, stand tall and focus on opening your crown chakra (located on the top of your head). Visualise a stream of pure, white light entering through this point from the divine and pull it down through your body. Open your arms, palms facing up, breathe deeply and slowly and then turn a full clockwise circle three times. As you do so, say out loud: "I ask that this circle be blessed with love so mote it be".

• As you fill your perfume bottle, think solely about what you wish to attract. If this is a specific person, visualise their face. If it is love from an unknown source, simply allow yourself to be filled with the loving energy in your protected space.

• Once you have added all the ingredients, seal the lid and then wrap the bottle with a long, red string. Say out loud: "I am calling on the Gods and goddesses of love and lust to bind the love of my dreams to me".

• Repeat 3 times for each bottle and then leave your perfume potion to brew for at least a week (at most a month). When you are ready to douse yourself, remove the strings and burn them in a fireproof pot with dried rose petals and a pinch of cinnamon.
