Gael García Bernal in Desierto (2015, dir. Jonás Cuarón)

#gael garcía bernal#desierto#ggb filmography gifs#desierto 2015#gael garcia bernal#this is ultimately a pretty standard thriller of the being-chased-by-an-inexorable-killer type#where the cast is picked off one by one until only the most conventionally physically attractive remain#this is good news for gael's character#on account of being played by gael#i think this one is elevated by the setting both in terms of beauty (it is stunning) and by making effective plot use of it#that apparently meant they were shooting two hours' drive away from the nearest towns with no cellphone reception etc.#which may be why we don't see more films set here#also elevated by the performances which are uniformly good#also elevated by the themes (jeffrey dean morgan's antagonist is targeting migrants crossing the border)#so we're back in the territory explored in documentaries like who is dayani cristal but this time as fictional thriller#this film came out as the trump wall discourse was hotting up and that was naturally something that got talked about in interviews#clever inclusion of antagonist's dog which effectively constrains what the characters could do to get out of the situation#so unlike in many films of this type there isn't a screamingly obvious course of action that they should have taken but unaccountably don't#still it remains a genre film sticking broadly to the conventions of that genre so the plot isn't going to astonish you#i've still avoided giffing the most spoilery moments though#tbh i suspect gael's character is still screwed at the end but then i think that's also the point (see: themes)

BEAST Chuuya's kind of hilariously tragic because he shows up in the story for approximately two seconds, only for the plot, which he was completely unaware of and had nothing to do with, to immediately come along and cause him irreparable emotional damage

Something I struggle way more with than ships I dislike are ships that I would be at least open to maybe consider if not for the fact that the majority of its shippers so very clearly only pair them together in order to avoid the more common ship they condemn for being ""problematic""

you would've thought it would be easy to avoid using/propagating high school bully type mockery even if the words "NFT" or "AI" or "tiktok" are attached. on the queer disabled neurodivergent site. and yet and goddamn yet
it's so transparent that whenever some new Bad Thing comes out and it's tumblr's topic of discussion for the week most people don't know/care/care to learn about its actual harmful effects and just want to use it as a way to find socially acceptable people to bully (for low hanging fruit i.e. reactionary reasons)

So I'm writing my term paper about The Magnus Archives and have been relistening to season 1 as a way to try to organize my thoughts and Fuck I Miss This Podcast
also i hate how it ended even more bc a running theme throughout the podcast UNTIL THE VERY END is how inescapable the Entities are. We see all sorts of attempts to avoid or thwart them and sometimes they do work for a while, but I think we forget that even absolute icons like Joshua Gillespie or that guy who left the Spiral because he was going to be late for dinner still were impacted enough by their experience to come to the Magnus Institute in the first place
And that by coming there Guess What They're Lowkey Marked By
I don't care what the Magnus Protocol or any part of canon will say/says, the Entities should not be banishable. Not without some kind of massive psychological shift in all life on Earth that eliminates fear.
Do you know how many of the S1 statements talk about watching? Nearly all of them involve it, of course because that's the easiest way to show gruesome spooky things + justify why there's someone alive to tell the tale, but in the context of TMA, I think it's extremely important that it's brought up in nearly every statement
There's always a point where the statement givers comments about their watching: they stay in a Situation longer because some part of them wants to see, they feel they can do nothing else so they watch, they return to the location of the Situation after it has initially passed, there's always a point where they could have left it alone but they don't because they feel like they can't.
The avatars might have petty squabbles between themselves about their "respective" patrons. But the Entities themselves seem very content to give a sizeable portion of those they've marked, at least partially, to the Eye.
#tma#the magnus archives#tma the entities#tma the eye#mine#in other words: I Maintain That The Entities Are All Friends Actually#well#not friends#but not divided into neat little clans like smirke and co. believe#i hate jurgen leitner but his analogy about an ant trying to understand a human is very very salient#except where i'm pretty sure based on how canon plays out he's talking about individual manifestations of one entity vs the entire entity#i'm choosing to interpret it as one entity vs That Which Is Fear#the Entities are not fundamentally distinct... well... entities#but parts of a fractured whole#it's no cosmic skin off their metaphorical backs if a victim of one entity ends up claimed by or serving another#they're just trying to get as much tasty tasty fear as possible#i think of them like a bunch of mouths that all lead to one stomach#sometimes they might go for the same target#iirc it's either ivo lensik or father burroughs(?) who is compelled to call out 'i'm already marked. i'm not for you' or something to that#effect#but anyway yeah sometimes they're essentially trying to extract fear from the same source in different ways#and one 'mouth' will kinda say to the other#'hey i think i can do this best buzz off'#and sometimes they listen#but there are also times where they basically draw and quarter a motherfucker#like father edwin burroughs(?)#(i forget how his last name is spelled)#who was gangbanged by nearly all the entities#which is hilarious to listen to in retrospect#bc this man just goes out of one frying pan and into several fires

Hi! Have you seen that nct jaehyun, dooyoung and jungwoo made a sub-unit? Their song is called perfume and it is just SO FUN! The song itself reminds me of some of the old suju songs because the beat is so fun and makes you wanna dance, but the choreography is also ridiculously fun! You should check it out) I was reading your posts about the lack of fun in kpop, and this was honestly very refreshing to see. The mini-album is also quite good, and they even did a live-band cover of their songs. As always, nct guys are incredibly talented musically, good job
Tumblr media
i actually really did not like their release....or their subunit.....or the album............
#like are they musically talented? yes. are the songs fine and technically good? sure#but i find them SO bland and im pissed off that theyre using the full nct brand for this discount cbx nonsense#should have been an nct lab!!! or an sm station!!!#also ngl i fucking hate the mv. like i HATE it. i have NO patience for pov fanservice stuff it makes my skin crawl. its insufferable#is it an effective method? sure. but i am NOT the target audience and am very much Too Gay for that#its one of my true pet peeves. i really. really fucking hate it and the fact that the mv was mostly like. 'chic perfume commercial'#was quite literally rage inducing.#so uh. sorry. that release is actually the opposite of fun (for me)#text#answers#nct w#slkdjfsd im so sorry you send me an ask and its RIGHT on a topic that i feel very strongly in the negative about lmao#pls dont be offended its not personal#also i need to clarify. i never said that kpop itself wasnt fun. kpop has and will always be fun.#i specifically said that a lot of fans (kpoppies) TREAT kpop like its not fun/actively eschew the fun parts of kpop#like flop groups or brighter concepts or just. taking it all too damn seriously#fans are not willing to look outside the main popular groups and so they dont actually SEE groups doing fun and cool and interesting things#like if you want to watch an actually fun mv go watch blitzers macarena#also idk how to tell you this but. ACTUAL nct music is so insanely fun. this ''subunit'' was just made to appease all the ''fans''#who complain nonstop about 'how nct sucks now' when THEY DONT Y'ALL JUST WONT ACCEPT THAT YOU DONT LIKE SOMETHING UR FAVES MADE#anyways. i will stop talking now since this is probably gonna make ppl mad lmao#my nuclear take is that most nct fans dont actually like nct as a concept. they only like the idols. and those people are wrong

Many people love the epic washes of sound (my mind unfairly stereotypes this as ‘fantasy-oriented soundtracks’) or highly-digitalized stylization of newer genres. These come with high levels of studio production, an enormous audial manufacturing in which all flaws or points of vulnerability are washed away. Nearly every mainstream vocalist's voices have been pitch corrected. They’ve had many separate recorded takes blended together for the ultimate, flawless sound. The musical instruments are so clean they don’t sound like they’re coming from human hands (and sometimes they’re not).
For me, you just deleted everything that made the music sound human, created an artificial artifact that is so "perfect" it's boring. If I don't hear the actual human's performance of the music, down to the effort and the flaws, then I can't relate to it. I want the musical instruments to sound like something that is being played, not something that has been manufactured for my consumption. I want the singing to be someone's voice, someone with real, hard-earned talent and strong convictions, not someone whose flawlessness only exists from computer interference.
Until recently, with second-half-of-the-Twentieth Century methods of manipulating studio recordings, human music sounded rawer. I crave that authenticity.
Music isn’t a product for me to vibe to passively, thoughtlessly in the background. Music is an innately human cultural action. It’s participatory. I want to feel it in my bones, make me feel like I’m participating in the generations and generations of heartfelt expression our species has passed down. I want to hear the cries of my ancestors 200 years ago. I want to feel like I’m part of something bigger. Something alive. Something grown from the heart. Something that fills myself and, at times, is fuller than myself.
The music that’s been produced to death in the studio? It’s as unappealing and unrealistic to me as blatant Photoshops of women’s poreless, wrinkle-less, magically glowing bodies.

there's something I find really instructive about the whole thing with the columnist who was scammed into handing over her savings in a shoebox, that I haven't seen many people talk about.
plenty of people have justifiably laughed at her credulity for just accepting that she was dealing with the cia and doing whatever they said, and she mentions herself in the article the sense of crushing mortification that she was so ready to bow to any perceived authority. other people have discussed the value of the piece being its "it could happen to anyone" message, coming from a financial analyst who has written about avoiding scams, which is fine and does have value.
but what I find fascinating is the way it illustrates the secret power of a good scam artist or charismatic leader: they don't have to look or sound convincing to 99% of observers. they just have to be talented at picking up on the specific cues that work on one person. this is why they move so quickly to isolate their targets from everyone around them, and maintain intense pressure with ticking clocks and regular check-ins. the scam is not designed to hold up under even 5 minutes of close scrutiny, it's designed to bypass scrutiny by hitting emotional buttons on a specific individual. the stupider you feel after you cool off, the better they've done their job.
anyone interested in charismatic manipulation, whether scams, cults, or abusive relationships, has heard people say "I'd never fall for something like that". and every victim, in retrospect, says "I never thought I'd fall for something like that". there is no special pattern of stupidity, intelligence, vulnerability or confidence. the pattern is that the perpetrator recognises a thought or behaviour characteristic they can take advantage of. they're the ones selecting you. and that's why teaching people the underlying social mechanics of charismatic abuse is more effective than telling them about lists of individual scams to watch out for. the thing that works on you won't look like anything you've scoffed at, by nature. survival bias plane dot jpeg.

Hi, I'm sorry if this is a dumb question. Gaza has been has been bombarded, cut form electricity, not received aid, etc. So how do we get pictures and videos of what's happening there? Because surely , Israel would've cut internet at the same time than electricity.
I'm not trying to deny what's happening in Palestine , just understanding better. Where I live there's not coverage or news about it in the media so all I know is from social medias and we all know we can't trust everything on here.
Thanks
I think that’s a fair question to have.
Palestinians have always had to be creative when it comes to finding ways of survival.
For starters, when this aggression was in its early stages, telecom companies like PalTel would assure everyone that their coverage is built to last longer than other companies because, according to their CEO, they have been preparing for war for 15 years. For example, contrary to what other telecom companies do, PalTel run their cables way deeper than necessary to ensure less effects of bombing.
Later though, even PalTel had to go out of service for the most part due to Israel’s relentless bombing. Not to mention, Israel deliberately targets and kills telecom company workers who even try to repair damages to what remained of the network.
Now, the only viable option that Palestinians in Gaza have to connect with the outside world is in fact through e-SIMs. This initiative was started by Egyptian activist Mirna El Helbawi which you can actually donate to and help connect people in Gaza to reach their loved ones and to get help when needed. We hear stories every day of people not being able to notify the civil defense or medics about wounded people following airstrikes who later succumb to their injuries.
As for electricity, at the beginning of all of this carnage, people would use generators. This is actually quite a normal practice as the electricity in Gaza was never provided consistently so people would switch to generators regularly. However, generators are powered by fuel, which is something else that Israel cut off the strip.
So when people and shops ran out of fuel, people started utilising solar panels and continue to do that as their main source to charge phones. Some people would even start applying a fee to allow people to use their charging stations, which are usually set up in tents or on top of cars. Others would walk miles every day to access free solar powered charging stations to be able to charge their phones.
Still, Israel started targeting solar panels specifically so they are not as widely available as before and the dust and debris from bombing rendered a lot of those panels useless. Some people started using car batteries to set up charging stations now.
With all of that, connections are weak and spotty and some people literally travel to other areas under so much threat just so they can connect and hear the voices of their loved ones. I was actually watching a video earlier today that shows people going on hilltops, raising their arms up hoping to "catch" a signal.
When it comes to the pictures and videos, remember that what you’re seeing, with all its magnitude, is a drop in a sea of Israeli terror against Gaza. Journalists have literally sacrificed their lives trying to get the word out. Kids started to record and share videos because even they realise that this horror is too much for them to bear alone. This is why it is crucial to amplify their voices and share their stories because they’re literally doing it in the most impossible of situations.
