People accusing Storm of being a Hover ripoff just because they're both gray, have a hair tuft, and are outside a pride… Same energy as people accusing Scar (TLK) of being a Claw (Kimba) ripoff just because they're both dark brown, have an eye scar, and are villains. Like those are all common tropes for their character archetypes, not unique copyrighted traits, and the DIFFERENCES between the characters are much greater than those surface-level similarities. For example with Scar/Claw, Claw is not the protagonist's uncle, does not kill his father, and has a much different personality and role in the overall story. And of course as IHS fans know, Storm (unlike Hover) is not an ableist bully, is actually supportive of her girlfriend, and has a more developed and interesting arc, including having an in-universe culture (vs "prideless lions" which are an un-detailed, amorphous blob)

But of course that's all on top of some people calling every lion cartoon "Lion King ripoff" anyway 💀 I wish people would think more critically before making accusations of copying, even if jokingly

Yeah its easy to tell who's read the comic and who hasn't because we made it a point to have Storm not be anything like Hover, right down to her sense of humor LOL (Also unlike Hover, Storm isn't a collective of bad butch lesbian stereotypes). We didn't write her to be "better Hover". Storm is just inherently better than Hover because a root canal is better than Hover.

If people think Storm is like Hover, it's a Hover they made up in their head and not what was in the show. But sure, let's all ignore the fact that Storm has a personality that isn't making fun at the expense of her friends. Let's ignore that she has interests beyond her girlfriend, has a family to speak of, has a collection of knowledge, fears specific to her, and reacts to problems completely differently. if its a grey lion, then it's fuckin Hover. Sorry, everyone who has a grey lion OC post-2020. Why you just copying Hover?

All Storm was was a repurposed Lion King adoptable. RJ added a mane when she repurposed her into a MP OC. And then later when we made IHS I changed her hairstyle to a fauxhawk cuz 1) I already had a character with a fauxhawk and I just took their hair and put it on Storm's head? 2) Maned lionesses are cool. Hover is not a maned lioness, unless you count those three growths sprouting from her cranium (all the other lions get real hair, so i dont get it, why wouldn't she?). Whatever those are, they're not a fauxhawk, that's for sure lol Plus Hover goes through like 7 different color palettes all throughout the show. If I had made Storm brown, they would just say she looks like Hover anyway cuz Hover's been all the colors of the rainbow. I can't win.

I won't mention that no one complained about Storm being a Hover clone when she was a MP character, and I don't hear too many complaints about how much closer Storm looks to Kasi from The Lion Guard soooooooooooooooo make of that what you will. - Cat

Made another lion for the I Hope So contest! Unless the previous one's simplified design counted as a separate entry, then feel free to ignore this one, but I just wanted to design the dad of this guy.

I'm having a bit of a fun time coming up with possibly family dynamics for him and his cub :D

He's a middle-aged lion who's a bit on a scrawny side. He's got a soft, warm kind of personality. He was born a traveller and never really had any desire to join a pride for most of his life. He's half-blind and I tried to model his eye based on some pictures but couldn't really get it right, here's an alternate version:

The gap in the eyebrow is from a wound that lead to him losing sight in that eye, though it has since completely healed.

I also decided that he'd deal with pretty bad chronic back pain that prevents him from hunting or walking for too long, so he now spends his life close to one spot since he can't travel for long distances, but he's content with hearing about different places and stories from his cub who visits him regularly. I just wanted to write a character who could deal with a similar disability to my own, and how chronic pain would affect a prideless lion and his eventually acceptance that he can rely on others and that's okay.

Oh yeah, and I decided to name him Mudslide.

I thought maybe eventually he'd join the Thundering Mountains pride, as he comes to terms with the fact he no longer can rely only on himself due to his disability and the fact he feels lonely now that his son lives and travels alone. He was never a loner like his son and he loved meeting new lions and swapping stories with them, and while he doesn't want to stop his son from forging his own path, he does get lonely now that he can't travel as much. I mostly imagine he'd keep his old name to remember his life as a traveller, but he could also take on a Thundering Mountains pride name of Topaz.

I might keep making IHS ocs outside of this contest because it's genuinely fun to do :D I'm definitely gonna draw him with Dreamwalker in the future.

Well, here’s that My Pride AU I was talking about.

First off: My Pride is a YouTube animated series about gay lions and I cannot recommend it enough; I’d link it here, but then this post won’t show up in tags or searches, so you’re just gonna have to go look up “my pride” on YouTube instead. Go check it out!!!

Second off: have a bunch of lion designs of my OCs to fit into this world. Some notes:

- Eris’s Pride name is a work in progress; I think I’m going to streamline it a bit but I haven’t figured out to what yet.

- Reykal gets to be both Prideless and a maned lioness, because I said so. (And because the partial mane makes a good parallel to montrals and lekku design-wise.)

- Clever!Alivar is a Prideless lion who found a cub who’d escaped her pride’s takeover by another Mane (and thus the death of her siblings), and instead of killing or leaving her, he went “hmm. Guess this is mine now”, named her Blaze eventually for lack of anything else to call her when it became apparent she didn’t want to try and rejoin a pride, and she just hangs out with the gaggle that his bachelor pride and the Prideless lionesses they’ve become friends with have formed together somewhat by accident - Risha having been born and raised Prideless, Akaavi having lost her pride as an adult

- My current thoughts on the plot, very quickly jotted down: The Empire and Republic analogues are two neighboring prides that have a longstanding grudge. The KOTFE plot analogue comes around when Shadowmane (Valkorion) shows up with his pride to push them out of their territories, and kills the Manes of both prides (Marr and ???), pushing the huntresses out. They’re forced to band together to survive, basically going “well, fuck, we have no leader and no home now, are we Prideless?? But there’s still a pride of us, we just don’t have a Mane, what do we do now” until Whisperseeker!Eris ends up primarily being the one to go “no we can figure this out, we just have to work together, we can survive without a Mane for a while” ...and thus she accidentally sort of becomes the pride’s new unofficial Mane, which she does not fully realize until Clever!Alivar and Blaze!Reykal (and co.) show up and instead of going “oh thank god a male to take leadership” she starts to instinctively challenge him as a threat to them. (Fortunately for everyone, Clever has precisely zero interest in becoming the Mane of anyone at this point, and Blaze, though she could technically take it as a maned lioness (there’s a semi-canon maned lioness Mane in the TTRPG streams the cast has done), feels similarly.)

- I’m not sure who the old Mane of the republic pride was yet tbh - the male chancellor from before Saresh? Trans!Saresh? Trans!Satele Shan? Jace Malcolm, maybe?

- Shadowmane!Valkorion straight-up just breaks Pride Law to keep his son Bright (Arcann) around as his enforcer instead of Bright leaving to find his own pride. His daughter Eclipsehunter (Vaylin) is also one of his primary enforcers, and is, how you say, terrifying. I also definitely want to see Whisperseeker!Eris and Bright!Arcann duke it out at some point.

Bonus:

in which Whisperseeker!Eris does not understand why anyone would want to avoid being under Pride Law because even in this universe Eris drank deep from the propaganda well as a youth

My current thoughts are basically on songs like:

Apex Predator (Mean Girls), Candy Store (Heathers), Be More Chill (Both parts, from the musical by the same name lol), etc

And like AUs with them because small/weak characters having to change their personality so people protect/just don’t kill them HURTS???

Like, weaker/younger characters being forced to change the way they act, look, etc in order to ‘fit in’ and be protected while an older/stronger character encourages it and even threatens them as a way to keep them doing it.

Like picture Player from CS having to keep his head down and obey orders while acting like everything is fine, like he’s totally a normal VILE operative just so people don’t find out he’s not??? Because the faculty loves mind games (“What’s wrong with you?! Why can’t you just be normal?!”)

Or, Hover from My Pride being lectured about why prideless lions are useless, disgusting, and all of those apply to her unless she obeys Pride Law?? (“You are not Hover anymore, Long Run!”)

Or, (spoilers for Dark Matter here) Daz losing literally everyone and everything and then having to act just right and listen to everything because she’s stuck on a space ship with total strangers who have no problems with killing her at a moment’s notice. (“Welcome, Little Warrior.”)

Or, and using OCs from ATF here: Descendants having to learn to keep everything ‘off’ or ‘not normal’ about them hidden because if they don’t neither of their people will want them near, alive or dead. (“Wait! Wait! Look, he’s like us, right? So you have to let him live, right?!”)

So I decided to come back to this blog after a year, and I took on a new character. Meet FantineAquane, the SHSL Secret.

Okay, let’s unpack this, because there’s a good bit here. And we already have problems.

... FantineAquane is NOT a name. That looks like a username of some kind, and when I googled FantineAquane, I discovered that it was indeed used as a username! I also managed to track down the creator, but I’m not really going to bother...

Why is the Gender thing blank? Even if you’re nonbinary, agender, whatever, that would be listed. However, the rest of the profile uses “she/her” pronouns and calls her a “girl”, so I’m going to go ahead with calling Fantine a girl for the rest of this.

No issues with the birthday, but she’s slightly underweight, which is an unfortunately common thing in OCs. Thankfully it’s not too egregious (Less than ten pounds underweight).

FantineAquane is tall-slim girl.She has long straight-wavy purple-black acid type haired.She weared purple short jacket with a long sleeves,old white worned brassier and worn daisy dukes.She has big blue-bright cerulean eyes with long eyelashes.She has a faded scars inside her jacket.

That grammar... Ughhh. It’s not /that/ bad, but it clearly tells me the writer isn’t a native English speaker. Or if they are, they’re flat out terrible at it.

Pray for me while I decipher this. It feels like I’m solving a worse Metheus puzzle.

Tall and slim... Okay, she’s about 5′8, so she’s actually decently tall for a... wait, how old is she?!

This is an actual problem. We don’t even have a listed age range. This is a problem for a Danganronpa OC! Even the DR1 students at least had age ranges, from sixteen at the youngest, presumably. (Well, they were a year or two older because of the lost memories, but that’s not too much to bring up.) What IS the problem is that we have no listed age. Yes, I am nitpicking that.

And “acid”... I’m gonna assume that’s neon hair. I am not going to provide a visual reference because that would mean your eyes will hurt.

That’s not even that appropriate! We don’t see Danganronpa students walking around with neon hair! Ibuki and Souda are the only people who remotely fit that, and their hair is toned down enough to not be painful to the eyes. Our solace here is that the art doesn’t hurt to look at.

And why is she only wearing a jacket over her bra?! Where’s her shirt?! Even Aoi had a shirt! While yes, girl power and all, that’s just flat out inappropriate! I’m assuming this is JUST killing game garb, but I sure as hell hope Fantine wears the uniform during school years! Most, if not all schools would take disciplinary action if you walked in wearing that kind of outfit!

(Note, Angie technically is wearing a swimsuit, so I’m not going to bring that up, but the clothing description confirms that this is a full out bra that Fantine has, not a bikini top.)

No comment on the eyes, but the scars (or... scar? See, this is why you need to have decent grammar) don’t seem to be brought up elsewhere, so -1 point.

WHY is she the SHSL Hope?! Nothing we’ve seen here shows that she is a candidate! What the hell is Tackler? Secret? Fate?! These talents are an absolute disaster.

I... I have no words. This so. BLATANTLY. Defiles canon that I feel like this person tried to rip Danganronpa off to make their own story.

And what the shit? I’m sorry, but this girl is not that attractive. Not nearly enough for “all the men” to want “to sex with her”. What the hell. This backstory is a mess. How can she attend Hope’s Peak without an invitation? HOW IS SHE STILL ALIVE IN THE POST-DESPAIR WORLD?! How is she not batshit insane?! Most people like her would be dead or have already fallen to despair by the time the first game takes place! And how-- How did Monokuma not let her in without wiping her memories first? What the hell is this?! Why is she trying to be the protagonist?! At least it potentially explains her horrendous choice of clothing...

I’m not even going to talk about this more. This is just a disaster and makes me want to get through this even further so I can scrub this OC from my brain.

Back to the actual review... yeah, if she was forced into prostitution, I have a feeling she wouldn’t actually like sex all that much, especially if she’d been forced into it from a young age. I don’t have much comment on the rest, as FINALLY something lines up with the rest of her.

That grammar is back! How do you mess up the iconic quote?! How has she challenged Monokuma like that without dying?! How can she handle others insulting her like that even though she clearly dislikes it? What the hell is going on here? Well... She’s got a poor judge of character, because she’s saying all the killers’ intentions was to damn everyone else. Nope. Not true.

And that last quote seems a little out of place. I’m gonna assume it connects to the creator in some way.

Final Verdict

Unsalvageable.

I’m (not) sorry to say this, but FantineAquane, the SHSL Secret, is UNSALVAGEABLE. There’s just too much wrong with her to be considered remotely salvageable, and it’s better off to just scrap her and start from the beginning. This OC was a disaster from beginning to end.

I was so confused with the questions about MP fans until I went on Twitter. Like- wow, this is like the Lion King vs Kimba situation like that one user said in the conversation. This also reminds me of when fans accused you of plagiarism because your main romance contains a light-furred Pride lion and dark-furred prideless lion when there’s not only proof these characters are based on OCs you had before I Hope So (and before My Pride, if I’m remembering correctly, right?) but Kovu and Kiara are a thing. A Pride lion falling in love with a lion outside of their Pride is not an original concept- I seriously have a story that has multiple Pride lions having prideless lions as their mates. Heck, one of these couples is a LGBT+ couple that contain a dark-furred lion, who has a disability, and a light-furred lion. Guess I’m stealing as well? You guys are also open about I Hope So being inspired by My Pride, mainly a My Pride AU, but it’s also inspired by other stories.

Also there’s differences between the claims they used like Nothing got her disability from Quickmane while Hope was born with it. Nothing only has scars over her eye while Hope got permanently half-blind, Hope changed her name, picking it herself, while Nothing keeps her name with Feather going on a speech on how she ‘made it mean more what her mother wanted it to be’. Storm isn’t just a prideless lion like Hover was, she has this whole lore with being a traveler with the moon being the Traveler, something these lions dedicate their lives to. She still lives by rules but they’re rules completely different from Pride lion rules. They’re rules of the Traveler. Also- Storm never even thinks of joining a Pride, while Hope and Adamant leaves on their own terms, not forced out. I was also confused about the screenshot of you patreon like how is that proof? 0-0

Yeah, the screenshot of our Patreon was posted because somebody defending us said "especially if one isn't making money off the project". I believe they were speaking in general rather than referring to our situation but either way: we've made no effort to hide that we have an active Patreon and a Ko-Fi so not really the revelation that individual thought it was.

Like you say: still doesn't prove any allegations of plagiarism. There's been a lot of us explaining how we haven't plagiarised anything and how My Pride itself is far from completely original and just getting 'well, I personally think you have because my simplified grasp on copyright law says so' in response but - again - no concrete evidence.

It's tiring, to be quite honest with you. Secondly: exactly. I even made the argument that Storm's design was made by somebody not associated with the comic all the way back in 2018 and well, all I got back was "yeah there are dozens of grey lion designs around" like... that was... the point... I was trying to make?

Copyright law just doesn't work on a "glancing look" basis. There has to be more to a claim than just superficial similarities, especially similarities as generic as the kind we're discussing here, like two characters having a disability and dealing with oppression. There has to be key elements in the story that have to line up exactly.

Yes, Hope has a disability like Nothing but she's born with it. Yes, she has an offensive name but this is actually NOT based on her disability but her so-called "inability" to listen to her mother. It is changed pretty much immediately, whereas Nothing's is not changed. I don't think I need to go into greater detail because it's already clear that we're dealing with something that has been inspired, rather than copied. Which isn't a criminal offence. And yep, we've always given credit to My Pride, which adds another layer of issues when it comes to copyright infringement. At no point have we argued that this is an original concept that we came up with entirely on our own. We've been completely transparent about that, but some My Pride fans insist on being like this:

And - again - the bottom line is that this is some oddly personal vendetta that these people have against us because... we don't like a show they like. Sorry, but you can't change how copyright law actually works because 'well these people attacked my pride and hurt my feel feels'. It would seem just blocking us and moving on would be a lot less effort but nah, we gotta get these marginalised creators and their project dragged because they criticised something I enjoy and fuck handling these kinds of things maturely. c: - RJ
