Wait while we're talking about Hybe's business philosophy, something that has has been bothering me for ages is that period of time where hybe would acquire a company with fairly successful groups and then? those groups would disband? like i was only a casual nu'est enjoyer and am by no means a fan of gfriend but i've been struggling to find a reason. nu est was probably some sort of internal disagreement bc they at least had a final album, but it seems like gfriend were dropped like a hot potato. idk. firmly believe society is better bc of it tho! it just nags at me a lot and i was curious if you had any thoughts on it.

oh gfriend got canned bc they had a nazi scandal, so that one was deserved, but nu'est got nuked without warning like a month before their ten year anniversary + album. from the verbiage used by the guys when they've talked about it, it appears like hybe essentially didn't offer them a contract renewal as a group. the two guys who stayed with the company have extant commitments (minhyun i believe is on an acting contract/had some acting gigs lined up and baekho does a huge chunk of songwriting and producing and would probably lose all his copyrights if he left), but the other three had nothing to keep them there without the group. obvs we're probably not going to know actually what happened but the general consensus is that the members and perhaps even pledis staff got blindsided by the decision, because the guys were talking about their anniversary and looking forward to the future with the group at their winter concerts (if they had known they were disbanding on the anniversary we would have also known bc they're all criers) and there straight up was a bus ad campaign that ran in seoul until AFTER they had already disbanded? which why on EARTH would a company pay for a whole ass ad campaign if the group was about to die? there's also a theory that their last album was just meant to be a tenth anniversary cb with galaxy as the actual title track, bc it's much more in line with a tt from them, and again was meant to be the anniversary song bside. the guys are pretty close (mcing/going each other's fanmeetings, ren's guested on aron's podcast at least twice) and they fought like HELL to stay together as a group for the last ten years (they're literally the group that pioneered the survival show flop revival) so them disbanding was extremely out of left field. as for why hybe would have incentive to not renew them? nu'est have a fair amount of domestic popularity and a very stable and loyal fanbase BUT not a very large intl one and not one that was actively growing. they were quite large in japan as well, but they never hit big with a western audience and as we know, that's the only audience hybe cares about. plus, as ten year veteran idols and staples of the industry they would have likely had a lot of negotiating power during contract discussions. hybe probably knew that they wouldn't be able to beat them in line with their company vision if they stayed together so the easiest solution was to just disband them.

Kpop title track ranking: NU’EST

In this series I’ll be ranking kpop groups/soloists title tracks based on my taste.

As someone who has been into Kpop around ten years at this point (oh do I feel old saying that) and knowing them pretty much from the moment I became a Kpop fan, ranking NU’EST songs makes awful lot of sense, right? And they truly have a nice title track selection, so it’s just about how I feel about these great great songs.

Good Bye Bye - Oh I’m so biased for this as this was my first NU’EST comeback as a fan. I also have the tendency to gravitate towards dark and moody songs like this one.

Love Me - It’s so good! So sweet, so cheery and so catchy!

Inside Out - I’m blanking out. It’s just so good.

Sleep Talking - Oh I’m so biased for this part 2. I don’t know why I have such a soft spot for this one, as I have nostalgia for all their other earlier songs too, but this is just somehow more special. It’s just so cheery, up-beat and fun, I love it!

I’m In Trouble - I’m blanking out. It’s just so good part 2

Bet Bet - Oh Bet Bet is just so good. I’ve really got nothing to say here other than that.

Overcome - Why haven’t I listened to this more often? It’s soo good! I’m baffled right now. Yes, I’ve listened to it when it came out but I definitely haven’t given it as much love as I should have over the years.

Hello - For some reason the young me really didn’t like this music video and that made me avoid the song all together for the longest time. Luckily at some point I realized that I should give the song a fair listen and I realized how great of a song Hello is. And this song is so timeless. It could be released today and it wouldn’t sound dated. It’s such a pretty song!

Action - Now I have to say that I always was more the Action-person in the Face vs. Action comparison. And I have to say it seems that I still am. Even with that crazy dance break that maybe hasn’t aged perfectly.

Face - What a way to debut! Such memorable song. Even though it has been years since I’ve listened to it more actively it does hold up quite well even now.

Love Paint - Love Paint is one that never quite clicked with me. The chorus is really nice but as I full thing I don’t find myself wanting to listen to it. Just not one for me I guess.

I left I’m Bad and Alone out as they weren’t really promoted songs. If they were to be on the list Alone would be right above Love Paint and I’m Bad would be on the bottom. Alone truly feels like the beautiful disbandment song that it ended up being and I’m Bad is a fine song, but I just prefer everything else above it.

Couple of amazing b-sides that deserve a shout out:   Love Without Love (aka Darkness) - If I have to name a favorite NU’EST song this is the one I’ll go for. I just love it to bits. But also: Hello Hello, Beautiful Ghost and VVITH

I feel like I'm beating a dead horse here, but just to add to the hybe discussion: the amount of hybe stans I've seen that are convinced nu'est's disbandment was a decision made by the members "bc they probably wanted to finally do their own thing" is baffling to me when Aaron literally said on his podcast sth along the lines of "the decision to disband was made for us". Idk it's nothing new but it always shocks me again to see how adamant some fans are in believing these entertainment companies. Hybe didn't just do an incredible job branding bts as "your friends" but also the company itself.

that's just hybe stans not actually giving a shit about the other groups under the company umbrella despite what they say, and also further proof that they have no interest or ability to engage with the actual industry at large

Let's talk about the symbolism of North and Night in 23.5. So the show has all these space references, but how does it apply to NorthNight? Let's look at this line said by North to Night. Is it just plain old flirting or something more? Let's look little deeper.

Starting with, North. North can be the direction but just for kicks assume North to be North Star. North Star/Pole Star, also known as Polaris is the brightest star in the Ursa Minor constellation and only visible at night. In the northern hemisphere, it can help you find your way at night as it's located in the direction of true north. For centuries, travellers have used the North Star for navigation. In astrology, North Star can be used to refer to an individual's destiny and fate.

The significance of North saying this line to Night? If North is the North Star and Night is the night sky then, presumably, Night won't lose his way if he stays with North and it was his destiny to meet him. Or the path Night takes will lead to North. Or whatever makes sense to you.

Actually, what's more fun is the link between 23.5 and North. Earth's axis is tilted 23.5 degrees from the plane of its orbit around the sun. Ongsa uses the pseudonym Earth because she likes Sun. And where is the North Star located? Right above the North Pole of Earth's rotational axis. From the trailer, it seems like Ongsa and North are friends or at least acquaintances.

Sticking to the space/ galaxy theme, their uniforms actually have 3 symbols: a circle(?), a moon and a star. The circle could be a planet or something else. They're going all in with the space theme, got to give with that.

A lot of assumptions and hypotheses but do you see it? Did they really have to make flirting so complex, I love them already. For 2 characters not even in the actual book, this is a quite a lot of work.
