TOTK Rant: How Much Better Than BOTW?
//major totk spoilers ahead
The Good
Ultrahand is amazing, it's a simple idea with few limitations leading to a lot of complexity and flexibility
Ascend is fucking awesome. im not even gonna like, critically analyze this one. i wish i could jump through ceilings in real life
Being able to throw items is extremely useful, meaning you don't have to waste arrows to get certain effects
Zonai devices are all amazing, same principle of Ultrahand where they all have simple uses with few limitations, meaning that you can create really complex machines very easily
The Music™ 🎷🐛
Rauru's sopping wet man vagina
There's a shit-ton of new enemies, including like-likes, gleeoks, evil rigby mfs that crawl on the ceiling, floormasters, phantom ganon, the assorted zonai creatures, froxes, baby froxes, yigas with driver's licenses, battle tali, damn those trees are WALKIN
Depths exploration is fucking amazing
Depths atmosphere
Sky Islands when they have anything on them
Air travel
60 new side adventures, which are waaay fuller in good content than the side quests or even the main quests lmao
build your own house
the boss fights
the final boss fight
shrine puzzles with Ultrahand
Proving Grounds shrines
Master Kohga
the guy that walks around continually failing to demonstrate any degree of professional signage
the side dialogue is really funny and well-written
the isolated vibe of botw has been traded in for a feeling of togetherness as a kingdom
large-scale battles with tons of monsters and friendly npcs
muddle buds
zonai architecture
did i mention the ost yet
skyview towers > the ubisoft towers
link has his hair down
tauro
purah
short-hair zelda
rauru
ganondorf
mineru
been spending most our lives living in a bisexual's paradise
the lightning temple

the yiga clan expansion
do the earthwaker link come on quake that shit
the all-clucking cucoo

the plethora of armor effects that are now also cooking effects, like slip resistance, swim speed, weather-based attack, and more

robot arm
I think a common theme in this list is that rather than being different from Breath of the Wild, there is just more of Breath of the Wild.
"No shit, it's a sequel."
Yeah I get that, but this is the first time a Zelda sequel specifically has failed to really distinguish itself from the game before it.
Tears of the Kingdom has everything that Breath of the Wild had, including its flaws. The fact that it's just "more of it" and "better" kind of makes the previous game completely obsolete, which is a first in the series.
Majora's Mask, Link Between Worlds, Adventure of Link, the Oracle Games and Link's Awakening are all direct sequels of previous games, and yet their identity is so distinct that they become standalone entries in the series.
Majora's Mask is not Ocarina of Time 2.
Tears of the Kingdom is 100% Breath of the Wild 2.
This isn't necessarily a bad thing, and considering the series has been almost rebooted entirely I'm not even opposed to the direct serialization of these games,
but if they are going to go this route,
and there's going to be 6 and a half years between the two games,
You need to do better than the last game.
And so we arrive at,
The Bad.
With the exception of the aforementioned Lightning Temple and Construct Factory, the dungeons, and subsequently main areas and story in this game blow ass.
The Dungeons in this game are just Divine Beasts but with somehow even less creativity. Say what you want about the lack of interconnectedness between and the quality of the puzzles, but they provided a feeling of controlling and manipulating a huge, moving being that sets the game apart.
In comparison, TOTK's dungeons are completely devoid of any original ideas, instead opting to be divine beasts without the movement gimmicks, meaning that they're just "go hit the four or fie switches in any order"
Breath of the Wild traded in the unique and distinct atmospheres of the franchises temples to capture a different feeling that sets it apart. Tears of the Kingdom tries to return to the old temples, but without committing all the way and missing the mark completely.
The Water Temple in particular stands out as completely fucking lazy to me, since it is literally just a bunch of blue platforms in the sky with 4 un-themed and not even water-related puzzles and a boss that is treated as a joke. There's almost no buildup in Zora's domain as well, as you just do a couple of short tasks to unlock the path up and then beat the dungeon in 30 minutes.
It's the worst kind of Zelda dungeon, with generic elemental themes but none of the art to tie those into actually unique places. And considering that there's no dungeon items, no double-backing, or any sort of semblance of an idea of you completing an actual dungeon and not just four shrines in a meat grinder, I would say it's ultimately WORSE than the divine beasts from Breath of the Wild.
The rewards for dungeons
In every dungeon, you get an NPC follower that fights with you and has an ability that you press A on to use. These are used pretty well in their respective areas. When you beat the dungeon, your reward is a blue clone of them that does less damage.
I get what they were trying to do, I really do, and on paper, it's a really great concept.
It's the champions from the last game, except they are actually there and fight alongside you, using that togetherness theming i mentioned earlier.
However, having them out is pretty much a straight downgrade since they are annoyances 24/7.
Their abilties range from mildly useful in some contexts at best to "i would only press a on you by accident."
and trust me. you are going to accidentally press a on them a LOT.
Somehow, they manage to both be in your way when you want to do literally anything else and also never there in the rare circumstance that you actually want to use your ability.
Their AI is complete dogshit, and they rarely swing at enemies, and when they do, the damage is pitiful. Tulin flies through the air, and is mostly behind you when you need him, but everyone else paths along the ground and will often get stuck on rocks, river edges, or random patches of grass sometimes because they lack any intelligence whatsoever.
It's such an easy fix too, just have a "sacred stone" rune in the radial menu where the useless map one is and let me manually select which ability I want. Bam. No more blowing big hearty truffles off cliffs or setting them on fire when im just trying to pick them up.
Fuse does not affect the durability of weapons.
Rather than opting to have the interesting choice of being able to repair your weapons at the risk of losing a rare quality of them, rehabilitating them using items from your inventory,
Nintendo instead opted to have the durability not change at all when you fuse something.
Also, every weapon in hyrule has "decayed," which, as well as being extremely contrived, means that fusing is required for weapons to be viable.
Tumblr media
So not only does this not improve the weapon system from Breath of the Wild, it actually makes it more tedious, since now you have to collect not just a weapon, but two parts of a weapon and then fuse them into a weapon.
It's taken every weapon in hyrule, broken them in half, and made you go find the pieces.
This also means that fusing funny stuff like minecarts or logs like they suggested in the trailer isn't viable, since it will only add a few damage points and waste a weapon slot.
In Conclusion
Yes, Tears of the Kingdom is the better game. It not only has more content, but the content is also just better, more experimental, and memorable.
And don't let my huge rant about The Bads misconstrue my thoughts on this game.
This is easily a 9/10, and probably my favorite game of all time.
But it certainly isn't a 10/10.
Breath of the Wild's flaws set it apart, it was easy to forgive them because they played into its unique experience.
Six years later, with an almost identically structured game, it's not as easy to set those aside.
Anyways, this has been World's Biggest Zelda Fan Finluz, and I want to raw link

WELCOME TO THE ATLANTIS GEORGIAS BRACKET: ROUND 1
Tumblr media
I wanted to call it "The Cup of Water," but I wasn't sure if that would be as clear.
Since it's March Madness, and the people of Tumblr have fallen in love with making brackets for pretty much anything, it's time we settle once and for all who the most popular Georgias player is. Sixty-four will enter, but only one can win. (Since there have only ever been sixty-one Georgias players who have seen active play, however, three NPCs have been picked to fill in the remaining slots.)
The bracket was largely seeded based on how I perceived each player's popularity to be within the Georgias' fanbase (with some margin of error), but anyone is allowed to participate in voting! Simply vote for whichever player in each matchup you like more, and winners will proceed to Round 2!
You can find all matchups under the #georgias bracket round 1 tag on our blog, or in the list below:

EVENT : emergency lockdown
With the island still under attack, all civilians (students, faculty, and island residents) have been assigned a location on the island to shelter in. Location assignments have been sent to each phone. Characters receive only their own assignments, not the entire list.
Most guards have been summoned to fight the attackers; a handful of NPC guards have been assigned to find and deliver lost civilians to their assigned shelters; all player character guards have received orders to collect supplies from designated emergency locations and proceed to an assigned shelter to protect civilians. Guards assigned to the shelters have a list of all civilians assigned to their shelter and are expected to check each of them off on arrival.
Another explosion has left half of the dormitory building collapsed, and the other half quickly following. Characters may have been in the building when it collapsed, and escape plots/injury plots are allowed!
The island is under attack by Delphine Delecaille. While the protections were down, Delphine and many of her people made it onto the island. Among the attackers is a massive purple dragon--characters may witness the dragon flying over the island, breathing fire, but should not come up against it. They may, however, encounter as many NPC attackers of various species as you please on their way to their shelter. Characters can fight and kill NPC attackers without consulting the main and without fear of consequences!
Speaking of journeys to their shelters, your character may take any roundabout journey you like to arrive there, so long as they do, eventually, arrive there. Late arrivals are allowed. Characters may spend up to two (2) days outside of the shelter. After they arrive at the shelter, they will not be allowed out, though characters with teleportation will not be bound.
Characters will not be allowed into shelters they are not assigned to, even in the name of staying with their loved ones assigned there.
While the island is under attack, cell phones on the island are misbehaving. Texts and calls are failing 9 out of 10 times.
The protective spells have been restored, but the binding spell in particular is acting up. Bound slaves may find they have access to their powers in short spurts of up to ten or fifteen minutes at a time.
Keep your eyes peeled for plot drops throughout the event!
Lockdown locations & assignments are under the cut.

Wards, Protection and Defense
March was the month where Edgar’s self-doubts began growing and growing. While most Order members seem willing to entrust him with quite a few secrets, he doesn’t think he’s the right person to ward them, and in result he begins trying to control the little things around him. Warding, protecting and defending become his priority and it does not help that he sees himself as the danger most people need protecting from.
1st Like My Own Mind - Arabella and Edgar meet at Hogsmeade for a coffee. They discuss Branwen snooping around Hogsmeade and Fabian having gotten a job at Hogwarts, with Edgar showing himself reluctant to reach out to him there as Hogwarts is meant to be a safe place for Fabian, and Edgar is only the bringer of war-news.
2nd At The Sweets’ Shop - Edgar goes to buy some sweets, but Dedalus, who Edgar has held a grudge against since school, keeps him for much longer than expected by talking and talking. For them, it’s a rather typical encounter -- until Dedalus mentions that he sees no point in joining the Fighting Club, despite needing to learn how to protect himself better. Edgar asks how he fights in battles, then, and Dedalus replies that he isn’t a great fighter and that if he finds himself in a battle, he simply removes himself. Edgar sees himself in this answer, as he too is anything but a strong fighter and used to run away, trying to find clever solutions out of situations rather than facing the battle head on. Remembering such situations, especially those that have gone wrong, he explains that sometimes you can’t remove yourself, either because of the circumstances or because there’s a person you love who’s still fighting, and that everyone thus needs to know their place on a battlefield. That if Caradoc wanted Dedalus in the Fighting Club, it’s not just to remove his weaknesses, but also to make use of his strengths, emphasising that Dedalus has a sharp mind which could be of great asset. But Dedalus misunderstands and thinks Edgar’s implying he’ll leave those he loves behind and says he’ll just do as Edgar does, and this is the last straw for Edgar. The idea someone might do as he did, copy all his mistakes, when all he wants is to protect and ensure the very opposite, it’s one of his greatest fears. With his poise lost, he lays all those mistakes out for Dedalus to see, as a warning and as a question: How could anyone think Edgar thinks himself faultless? Why would anyone possibly want to copy him?
Uncapitalist Shopping Spree - Agitated by having reminded himself of the many deaths he has caused, he goes to find Amelia. The two haven’t really talked ever since February 14th, ever since Amelia had been brought to the Potter Estate, seeing the Order in action, and a lot of stuff built up. So after they go steal some books just for the rush of it, the twins blurt out all their fears at each other, opening themselves up completely. Ainsley. Mundungus. Rigby and the heritage. Caradoc. It ends with Amelia demanding to join the Order and Edgar knows better than to fight her stubbornness. Thus, he brings her to Caradoc.
At Strongarm - Edgar tells Caradoc Amelia wants to join the Order and they need to procure a Tag for her as fast as possible. Caradoc says it’ll take time but he’ll work on it. Amelia leaves and Caradoc and Edgar are left alone together, which is where Edgar breaks down. It’s the first time in six years (since the day he caused the death of the other Order members, which he implied to Dedalus) he cries. Amelia being in the war means putting her in danger, a danger Edgar can’t protect her from. He reminds Caradoc that if Amelia dies, so will he.
3rd On/Off Duty - Needing to take his mind off things, Edgar goes to the theatre, where he meets their newest recruit, Annalise Fawley. They talk all things theatre and Edgar finds himself fairly charmed by her.
6th Dignity and Love to not Blend Well - Severus and Edgar are just done discussing all that there is to know on the spy-front, as every Saturday morning, when they mention the Fighting Club. Severus explains that he did pass the sorting test and made it into the good group, but would rather die on the battlefield than train with Sirius Black. Edgar however -- seeing his younger self in Severus’ arrogance -- reminds Severus that he’s way too valuable to die. Anxious that his explanation might be met with misunderstanding again, like with Dedalus, he explains more clearly that the Fighting Club is more than just curse-training, it’s also a way to find out about your fellow members’ strengths and weaknesses. The main take-away, however, is that Edgar feels like he has once again gotten to know his partner a little better.
8th Calendrical - Maddy Warren is initiated into the Order. Afterwards, Mary and Edgar discuss the newest updates: Maurice, the DTF, Maddy. They also discuss that it’s time to leave their position of defense behind and start attacking first, which is something Edgar has only been waiting for for quite some time now, waiting especially for the right person to pick up a wand and go for it. In a way he knows that defense can only go so far, and attacking first is, in the long run, the best way to protect everyone.
9th It’s the big moving day. Most everything that can be transported, is brought from the Potter Estate to the House of Bones.  The Map, the Minutes, all Tags, all plans and lists and artifacts of value are moved, leaving behind mostly the things that wouldn’t have a safe place to store yet, namely various items from the infirmary, as they want to leave what they don’t understand to Emmeline and her expertise and system.
Dripping Water Hollows Out Stone - Afterwards, Edgar has Amelia and Fabian meet -- without letting them know beforehand -- and forces them to make up. He tells them that he belongs to no one and if he gets hurt, it’s his own fault, and no one should feel responsible for having to protect him.
10th The Cursed Disco - Frank brings sneakoscopes into the House of Bones, which all go off as the house is filled with potentially mistrustful objects and energies. But Edgar reminds Frank, that it’s not the Order who needs to mistrust the House, but the House needs to mistrust the Order; the people of the Order brings danger with them (once again thinking of the idea of ‘Illness’ as well as his plans with Caradoc to test their fellow members in the future), and they should find a way to ensure trust amongst the Order soon.
12th Hide and Seek -  After their night together on January 6th, Edgar has done his most to avoid Mundungus Fletcher, while Mudnugngus did his most to cross paths with Edgar. The pettiness resolves now in Edgar’s old room, where Mudndusgus goes to steal something and instead finds more than two dozen posters of himself plastered on the walls. Edgar, more than embarrassed, promises to take them down, but Mudnugngus quickly has a new objective: Edgar’s key-earring seems like something marvelous to steal. The key-earring made of many keys holds one key, which Edgar is keeping safe: it opens the cabinet to Caradoc’s heart, his warmest memories, and when Edgar realises it’s gone, he panics, fearing he has failed to protect his best friend.
13th - 18th Edgar and Caradoc begin preparing their Test, while Edgar also studies James’ plan on how to find out the spy, which he gave him exactly a month ago. It feels like much longer.
18th Another One Knows - On the night of the 17th, Severus finds Edgar and tells him that Peter is the spy. Edgar meets with Peter and orders him to wait for an opportunity, when that opportunity arises, he will fake his death and hide in the House of Bones for protection. Peter is grateful, but Edgar doesn’t do this out of friendship or pity. He’s doing it like this because he knows that Peter is worth more alive than dead right now, and that if he scares the boy away now, he’ll go to the Other Side forever, and his friends will have to grieve yet another friend. It’s those friends, Lily, Sirius, Remus, that Edgar thinks of when he dismisses Peter and tells no one about it, wanting to believe that if only Peter will be shown enough love, he will make the right decisions in the future.
21st The Battle of Diagon - Actually, Edgar meant to meet up with Marlene and show her a tour of the House, so when the battle news break, he’s with her. She’s the one who keeps him from going upstairs to the Map room and apparates him to Diagon Alley instead. He thinks of all the conversations he’d had this month about trust and battle fighting, and how little time they had to prepare, and it’s only when he sees the young Efa Chittock that he snaps out of it.
Protection - Running into a battlefield isn’t always the smartest choice, even if it’s to help her friend Dorcas, and while Efa isn’t too pleased by being held back at first, she quickly realises that Edgar’s plan sounds indeed like she’d be able to protect more people more easily that way. So they run into a house and up to the third floor, from which they defend their fellow Order members downstairs. Because Efa is doing well, Edgar leaves her not too long after, ordering her to stay where she is.
Inside the Sweets Shop - On his way to the side streets, to which the battle is slowly spreading, he sees Dedalus and Fabian inside Dedalus’ shop. He hurries to enter and ward everything, but not before giving Fabian his protective coat and sending him out into battle, telling him to show up for a date tomorrow night. Punctual. Alive. Then Edgar and Dedalus take care of the kids caught inside the shop, as well as the knocked out Death Eater, before, suddenly, Voldemort appears.
Voldemort is targeting Dorcas and Annalise, and Edgar pushes Dedalus deeper into the shop. But realising that Dorcas being in danger will draw Efa down from her hide-out, Edgar runs back into the street as well, and together, from opposite sides of the road, they ward off any attempts of making it even harder on Dorcas and Annalise.
Aftermath - Once back at the HQ, Edgar takes notes on everything that happened, on everything they lost.
Rigby and the Phoenix Part I - During the Debriefing, someone knocks on the door. It turns out it’s Rigby, who has just learnt today that this war is real, that the Death Eaters are really real, that the Order is really real, and who is now learning that his own siblings are in fact part of the Order.
In This Play, We Reveal What Type of People We Are - Edgar works late into the night until he sees Peter Pettigrew watching him from the shadows. He learns that Peter faked his own death and now requires Edgar’s protection.
22nd When Preparation Meets Opportunity - During the Battle of Diagon, Edgar gave his Phoenix Tag to Efa, aware that the Other Side already knows of him. He told her that once all of the veterans will be gone, they’ll need fresh faces to surprise the Other Side, which wasn’t a very comforting thought but at least had Efa accept the Tag. Now she is bringing it back to him, and Edgar, who worked all night through on the hostage and the List they found again, allows himself a moment of smiles: he is proud of Efa for how she fought yesterday and invites her to a breakfast. Perhaps also to charge her with some secret tasks.
The Inevitable Catastrophe - Peter has to pretend he’s dead. But Edgar doesn’t want his closest friends to go through the grief of losing another friend, so he brings them in to allow them to know he’s fine. He makes them promise not to ask questions and finds himself disappointed that wanting to know what happened is all that’s on their mind anyway, believing that if Peter doesn’t feel loved, he might betray them again. When Remus offers to stay over, he’s relieved. Afterwards, he burns the plan James made to find out the spy, as it could now risk Peter’s life but also out of disappointment for not having been of more use. He asks the question: Protecting Peter, giving him a second chance, it’s smart, but is it fairness or weakness?
The End of Alcott Avery - Artem and Bran brought in a hostage, which is being interrogated all through the night and the next day. After the thing with Peter is taking care of, Edgar joins Severus for a last interrogation, but Avery brings barely any new information to the table, and before they can do anything, Bran kills him with a knife.
24th Beginnings are Endings - The attack on Diagon brought more attention to the Order than ever before -- it seems -- and with that attention comes a new recruit: Lucinda Talkalot. On the 24th, Edgar finds her snooping around the House of Bones, and so Edgar gives her a little tour to test her.
25th The End of Alcott Avery Part II - At the office of the Daily Prophet, the news break that the family of Alcott Avery has fled, and Edgar realises quickly that it’s got to do with the murder of Alcott. He writes Caradoc to tell him, though he doesn’t quite know for which goal, and sees Ainsley across the office also reaching for stationery, possibly to inform the Other Side of the same.
28th Rigby and the Phoenix Part II - Edgar goes to meet Rigby at his apartment, finding Andros instead. The two have a pleasant conversation until Rigby comes home and bans Edgar from ever talking to his family again, as Edgar is ‘dangerous’.
Omnia Muntantur - After this, Edgar’s mental health deteriorates and he begins warding everything more intensely, the intrusive thoughts forcing more and more patterns into his life. Meeting with Marlene after the fiasco at Rigby’s brings him at least some relaxation.
30th The End of Alcott Avery Part III - As Edgar watches the Fighting Club to figure out new battle strategies, Caradoc finds him and hands him a Muggle paper from Liverpool. In it, the death of the Avery family is reported. Edgar’s not sure if it’s a victory or a failing on their part, but what’s certain is that the Other Side will kill everyone who dares to desert. It at least reassures him that keeping Peter being alive a secret was the right decision.

WHY CRESCENT HARBOR? (biography snippet)
From the outside looking in, Helene’s reasons for relocating to Crescent Harbor are harmless: her cousin is getting married, mother wants her to oversee renovations to the cottage and home, and with a few new acquisitions being eyed in Seattle, she’s to be a point of contact within commuting distance— a test before a likely promotion. Yet, truthfully: she hardly cares for her cousin’s wedding, the renovations could be overseen remotely, and if she were truly meant to be overseeing anything in Seattle she shouldn’t be two and a half hours away. Helene, in all her years of success, of taking and conquering like some covetous spoiled creature, wants respite. She wants to draw her husband out of the city, wants an opportunity for them to start anew away from the glittering cityscape of New York. Crescent Harbor had been used as a humbling experience once; perhaps it will work as a way to mend their marriage, too.
It is to be noted, however, that Helene has lost none of the proud tilt of her head. And that her smile, if anything, is more akin to a snarl. Her charm, if it could be called that, is in her honesty, is in the way that she cuts no corners for herself, is the way that she commands not only attention, but respect. Her father may have paid for many things, but her fortune and her position in life is her own.
There is no such thing as fairytales.
QUERY/SNIPPET.
What is your favourite place in Crescent Harbour?
“Hawthorne’s Folly.” The words slip from her lips as an easy breath, corners of her mouth curved upwards as though she’s proud to say so. Except, the gleam in her eyes is not delight. The tilt of her head does not denote any such amour propre in association with her mother’s family. Considering the lives of Christopher’s children, Helene is more than glad to not carry the Hawthorne name itself— but in assumed pride her answer remains as it is, enchantingly malicious in the way a sharpened sword gleams in the light. Pretty face, brilliant mind, silver tongue: “If there’s anything good about a small town it’s that the hiking trails are lovely.” Follies are decorative, foolish things— distractions. She sniffs head tilting in the opposite direction as she seems to taste the answer that lingers on her tongue, unflinchingly meeting the gaze of the other. “Two hours away from Seattle and yet the light pollution still manages to ruin the night sky. A shame, really.”

Leveraging Player Motivation Models to Increase App Engagement – Part 1
Paula Neves is a Product Manager at Square Enix and describes herself as a gamer turned psychologist turned marketer working in mobile free-to-play games. Prior to joining Square Enix based in Montreal, Paula was the Chief Mobile Officer at Gazeus Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where she headed up user acquisition and product management. Paula is a proud member of the UA Society and a frequent speaker at industry events and conferences, where she eagerly shares her knowledge and experience from her 10+ years in the mobile app marketing industry.
Learn more about Paula from her Mobile Hero profile.
As an undergraduate in Psychology, a graduate in Marketing and a professional in the gaming industry, I’ve always tried to combine what I learned in college with what I do at work. Psychology and marketing go hand in hand, especially when it comes to designing games, and even more so when they’re Free-to-play.
In Free-to-play games, most systems and mechanics are built on the principles of behavioral psychology and we hear a lot about theories like risk aversion, reciprocity, endowment, and the like. But when it comes to planning your next game, for a long time I felt that our industry was missing a good game design framework that is built on science and psychology. That was until six years ago when I first heard of Scott Rigby and his work at Immersyve, and the guys at Quantic Foundry. I started going down the rabbit hole, coming across several interesting player motivation models that all have a recognizable psychology framework as a foundation, like the work done by Jason Vandenberghe and his Domains of Play and Ethan Levy and his Tower of Want.
This is the first part of a three-part blog series intended to explain what motivates players into picking up a game and continuing to play it. It’s a combination of psychology models transposed into gaming and its characteristics. This blog hopes to educate product managers, marketers and game designers on player psychology and how we can all leverage it to make a game that more people will play. Thankfully, this work is already being done by the people I mentioned earlier, so my intention here is to put it all together so that the knowledge is accessible to others.
Self Determination Theory and Long-term Satisfaction
The Self Determination Theory (SDT) is a psychological theory of human motivation that addresses three basic psychological needs including:
Competence: the need to experience mastery, growth and learning, and to feel successful and effective.
Autonomy: the need to feel that you’re in control of your choices and in harmony with your decision. In games, it translates to choice, customization and agency.
Relatedness: the need to be cared for and to care for, to be connected with others, knowing that you belong and matter.
According to the theory, these needs are innate, universal to everyone, and if met, will lead to self-motivation and growth. The theory also makes a clear distinction between extrinsic and intrinsic motivations: The former being caused by external factors, such as being paid to do your job or being made to feel guilty about not doing something. When said guilt — an external factor — motivates you to do something, that behavior is not self-determined. Intrinsic motivation, on the other hand, is when one feels inwardly motivated to achieve something in order to satisfy things like autonomy and competence.
For quite some time extrinsic motivation was judged as bad and intrinsic as good, but it isn’t so black and white. It’s almost impossible to have something — like a game — that will only motivate players intrinsically. As a game designer you must try to kindle more intrinsic than extrinsic motivations, but some extrinsic motivations, like giving rewards for completing actions, are unavoidable and not always bad. If you have an external goal that you identify with, you’ll feel motivated to complete tasks in order to fulfill said goal. That’s a good type of extrinsic motivation.
Self Determination Theory and Video Games
Scott Rigby and the people of Immersyve used SDT as a foundation for their own model: The Player Experience of Need Satisfaction (PENS). The team studied over 7,500 players and their motivations to continue a game for a prolonged period of time and found that PENS had a strong correlation with what compelled players to not only play a game for months and years on end but to identify as a [insert game name] player. I’m a DOTA player.
The basic needs as described by SDT can translate into gaming as such:
Competence
A game is easy to learn, but difficult to master. First Person Shooters and skill-based games like Super Meat Boy are big on competence need satisfaction.Rigby proposed that in order to satisfy competence, game designers should try to create the optimal level of challenge for the player. He refined this idea through Polish psychologist Csikszentmihalyi’s concept of “Flow” –– a psychological state where one is completely immersed in a task. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi defined “Flow” as:
“…the state in which people are so involved in an activity that nothing else seems to matter; the experience itself is so enjoyable that people will do it even at great cost, for the sheer sake of doing it.”
According to Csikszentmihalyi, Flow happens when challenges are appropriately matched to one’s ability. If the task at hand is too simple, people will get bored and not experience Flow. If it’s too challenging, people will get anxious, frustrated, and similarly won’t reach the state of Flow.
Tumblr media
Making adjustments to Csikszentmihalyi’s concept of Flow, Rigby believed focusing only on the optimal challenge wasn’t enough. Game designers should concentrate on creating a balanced mastery curve (or difficulty curve) for their games. The curve should be so that challenges presented are slowly more conquerable — because the player is getting better at the game — and provide gamers the possibility to express their mastery. While the optimal challenge was an important element, if the player doesn’t get a chance to progress and convey their mastery in action, then their competence need won’t be satisfied.
In line with player progression, whenever one expresses this mastery, they should receive clear and immediate feedback on their accomplishment. This dictates the importance of over the top animation and feedback design in the user experience.
Autonomy
A game that satisfies players’ needs for autonomy gives them choices, customization and agency. Role-playing games (RPGs) and massively multiplayer online games (MMOs) are usually great at satisfying the autonomy need by maximizing the player’s opportunities for action and giving them an entire open world to explore and character sheets to customize.
Choices that are forced upon us, like invisible walls in a game world, feel weird and are demotivating. Scott Rigby states that it isn’t exactly the act of — for instance — customizing your character that will satisfy autonomy, but rather coming back to your character later and having a feeling that “I created this and it’s awesome.” According to PENS, autonomy is particularly important for titles that achieve a perennial value for players, those that are played for years and define their players’ identities. In his research he found that first-person shooter (FPS) titles — more commonly known for creating competence need satisfaction —  also satisfy the need for autonomy.
Relatedness
Satisfying the need for relatedness is possible through features such as social grouping and status feedback systems. MMOs and multiplayer online battle arenas (MOBAs) are big on relatedness need satisfaction because they provide a strong sense of belonging through parties and guilds. In these games, you’re always looking after your party and you are looked after by them.
Relatedness is commonly thought of as “the social need” and often, mistakenly, thought of as pertaining only to multiplayer titles. However, non-player characters (NPCs) can be a big driver of relatedness where, when scripted properly, players end up having an emotional connection to that character. Anyone who played Fallout 4 probably related to Dogmeat, the NPC dog that accompanies you in your travels through the wasteland.
Conclusion
By focusing on the three basic psychological needs that the SDT model proposes, game developers are creating psychological experiences that form the building blocks of fun and not only fun itself. According to the scientists at Immersyve, this is a preferable approach because fun is “only” the outcome of the experience and therefore an intangible construct.
As game designers and product managers we have to ask ourselves: Does this feature promote competence, autonomy, or relatedness? I found out the practical way (read: the hard way), that game mechanics and systems can either promote or, if not done properly, thwart these three basic needs.
Remember that you don’t have to design all three needs into every little microfeature of your game, but when you look at the macro of that feature — the overarching, big feature — it does have to address the three needs. Maybe a couple of micro-features will address relatedness and another five will have both a combination of competence and autonomy, but when you look at the big picture of the (to use scrum language) Epic feature all three needs should be well represented for that Epic to be successful in the long-term.
This framework helps answer how to keep players engaged and create long-term satisfaction, but does it also explain the motivation behind users’ install and purchase decisions? Why did players install your game to begin with? In part two of this series, we’ll dive into Jason Vandenberghe’s framework, the Domains of Play, and how it helps explain what drives users to install or purchase your game.

So, I was gonna write about the cat I put up for adoption in The Sims 4 called Rigby, but I got carried away and the post got really long, so it’s under a cut.
But basically, I’m feeling a bit sad because of a virtual cat.
I feel bad for putting Rigby up for adoption, now everyone in the household is sad and I miss him nyooming everywhere ;-;
But he was basically starving everytime because I couldn’t manage to take care of two sims, two dogs and two cats. The dogs are trained, so they’re not much of a problem... But Rigby was energetic as heck, so he kept messing around
Now Creamy is the only one left... At least she’s better behaved. Ok, I really feel bad I want him back. I’m gonna make a NPC adopt him, the poor guy.
But I didn’t want to acidentally kill a cat because I forgot to take care of him. They’re too small, I can’t see where they are or what they are doing while taking care of the sims. The dogs are big, so I can spot them but damn
And he kept running too.
I’m sorry Rigby... Your nyooming and nonstop screaming will be missed :(
He was so cute playing with the laser thing... And waking up everyone... And kicking Cecilly out of her own bed... Ok, I’ll really miss him
He was a cute Calico cat...
Ok, I’m not crying and stuff, and I have him saved in the gallery too but... I am way too sad about a cat that doesn’t even exist. Like, I’m actually feeling a bit bad for leaving him
THIS HUGE POST IS A PROOF. I’ll put it under a read more, jfc
Sorry everyone, especially if you’re on mobile, because the read more tend to either not hide the text or simply hide it forever, without the read more button.
Ok, I’m gonna train Creamy because I don’t want to put another cat up for adoption, sorry for the... Kinda useless and unecessary post.

THE GEORGIAS BRACKET: ROUND 2
Tumblr media
Ahoy, and welcome to Round 2 of the Georgias Bracket! In Round 1, we saw many dramatic sweeps, but with all the nobodies and NPCs being taken out of contention, matchups are only going to get closer from here! If you want to see your favorites win, don't forget to #Vote!
But first, here's some statistics from Round 1!
Congratulations to Niq Nyong'o and Jan Canberra for being the only players to get a clean sweep on their respective polls, with 100% of the votes! Neither of them should get too comfortable, however, as they'll be going up against each other today in a battle of Expansion Era captains! And to Goodwin Morin II and Basil Ball... condolences! Here's your participation award, I guess.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, the closest matchup was Penelope Video vs. Wyatt Mason IV, with Penelope barely eking out a win with only two votes more than Ivy.
The matchup with the most votes was Mint Shupe vs. Lachlan Shelton, with 62 votes!
As always, anyone is allowed to participate in voting, whether or not you're familiar with the Georgias (or even Blaseball in general). Just vote for whichever player you like more in each pair, and winners will progress to Round 3! And don't be afraid to do a bit of campaigning for your favorites, if you feel like it.
You can find all matchups under the #georgias bracket round 2 tag on our blog, or in the list below:

EVENT : spring punishment
You didn’t really think it was that simple, did you? A day in chains, just enduring a little pain? No, for such egregious disrespect, there must be real consequences. And how can anyone learn their lesson without truly participating in the fallout?
Each member of Group A has been secretly matched with three members of Group B, and vice versa. Throughout the day, people from each group will be magically silenced--no apologies or clues as to their identity here--and forced, through magic or compulsion, to participate in the punishment of the three people they have been matched with. And there will be no weepy apologies and regaining of trust afterwards. All those punished will be enchanted so that they are unable to tell anyone the identities of the people they tortured. Your pathetic guilt will be your own cross to bear, as will the mystery of who tortured you.
OOC INFO:
On Saturday, each person from Group B will be magically gagged so they cannot make any sound, and brought to the quad, where they will be compelled to use, hurt, and punish three members of Group A. On Sunday, this process will be reversed, with every member of Group A being forced to use, hurt, and punish three members of Group B. Each participant will thus be tortured by three people, and torture three people. Participants will not be aware of this twist until they are made to punish someone.
Participants will be enchanted or compelled--depending on their species’ susceptibility to compulsion--to torture each other, but will remain aware of their actions and know that they are acting against their will. No particular method of torture is enforced; you may decide for yourself what they are compelled to do. Guards will have whips, paddles, floggers and the like available, and you may headcanon any other implements.
Those being tortured will remain blindfolded and deafened while the unwilling participants are present. Those torturing will be magically unable to speak or make a sound, but will otherwise have the use of their mouths.
All participants will be enchanted so that they are unable to tell anyone the identities of the people they tortured. This includes confirming the identity if someone asks or guesses.
The admins have randomly assigned one character for each participant to torture, for a total of two random assignments each--one random person to torture, and one random person to be tortured by.
For the other two out of three, you may plot with anyone from the opposite group, so go ahead and force your character to torture their friends, lovers, or whatever your twisted little heart desires.
If you do not wish to thread or plot all six interactions, you may choose to headcanon that any number of them occurred with NPCs. As long as you headcanon that your character tortured three people, and was tortured by three mystery people, only the randomly matched pairs are required.
Random pairs can be found under the cut, sorted by group. Find your character’s name on each list, as punisher and punishee.

Fun times during my game last night!
Bad guy summoned a high lvl undead called a Pit Wraith on us. This ghostly mass made up of plague victims. Serious shit, last time one appeared we had to get rid of it by ways of a quick ritual. Tonight however -
(We use a D100 system in this case. 2 D10s, one single digit, one 10s units)
Me, the Necromancer: oh FUCK! *rolls fast draw* Do I make it on a 7?
GM: Only just. What are you going to do...*hits him as I just smile and point to my skills* oh you fucker!
Me, the Necromancer: You bet your ass Im going to bind it! *rolls a 68 and passes* "I'm a Rigby! Motherfucker!" (I was able to add an NPC who my Necromancer is a descendant of. So her family name is know and this made the bad guy shit a brick upon hearing it)
My character just...swings her big dick energy by binding it. Then survives a zombie attack on 1hp, THEN tells said Wraith to fuck off home.
Felt good to power move like that since we have a misogynist player in our party.

RIGBY FRIEDRICH: Georgias player from Season β12 to Season β24. Notable for being the Georgias' star pitcher in the Expansion Era. Also the Georgias' star batter for a few seasons. Look, Rigby was really, really good at Blaseball. Has a winning spirit, which may have extended a few eclipse games for longer than necessary. Currently buried in Seattle somewhere.
POSEIDON: NPC. Patron deity of Atlantis, prior to his death. Notable for being killed by Rigby Friedrich.
