🔥Character you think is overrated
Not sure....I don't think any of the main cast is overrated. I honestly don't know.
🧨Character you love to hate
Bertie! He is just so hateable. James played him perfectly.
🙈Character you always forget exists
God there are SO many NPCs I forget most of them. I do forget Bertie exists at times.

since ur last mary and naomi post you've got me stuck on naomi-mom brain worms...well actually it's been ever since ur edit of 12x09 and 13x19 but anywaysss if naomi and mary ever did meet and have a conversation, say around s14, what do you think that would be like
my mom-naomi brainworms are contagious I do apologize <3
I think there’d be an innate understanding between the two of them, so much so they would see each other as their shadow in psychology terms. they’re exactly what each other hates most about themselves, failure as a mother. mary would despise naomi if she knew what she’d put cas through— he’s the only real relation between them anyways, ie why he’d be what/who the conversation is about. naomi might’ve come down from heaven trying to get cas to come back home. she showed up in the bunker, having tracked castiels grace to the location. when mary walks in on her and asks what she wants she’d put in terms of ‘heaven is dying, we need him’, but there’s an underlying selfish reason of the fact she wants him home. she’s repeatedly and consistently expressed this want throughout the seasons. in season eight she even explicitly stated ‘we’re on the same side, bringing castiel in from the cold’. over the series she did grow and accept the fact castiel didn’t want home, let alone be around her. naomi was controlling, but ultimately learned to let go. she wouldn’t push cas to join her. however, marys attitude and presence would definitely tick something in her.— now naomi wouldn’t exactly care about mary’s opinion on how she raised her child. mary didn’t know the stakes back in heaven. naomi saved him. she’s an angel, far above a human created as a tool for an apocalypse that never came. but based on her defensive nature, naomi would easily dig into her with how she treated her own children. I can see her spewing the fact that mary and her family the whole reason everything’s messed up. if she never made the deal, the apocalypse would’ve never had to be. if castiel had never met sam and dean she could’ve saved him. actually, her whole family could still be together if dean hadn’t broke the first seal. it’s a personal vendetta. marys choices hurt heaven overall and ruined everyone naomi loves. after a back and fourth conversation of insults there’d be a physical altercation in which dean, sam, and cas walk in on to stop. I don’t think naomi would ensue it, she’s honestly pretty passive, but mary wouldn’t have been the one winning. naomi would listen to cas when he told her to back off, both of them leaving to discuss matters privately. cas ended up walking naomi back to the portal, but couldn’t stand being in a room with mary the following days.
I have no clue what posts of mine you’ve seen, but kindly offering you my naomi meta posts to add to the brainworms <3 : zip zap zop

MILES HEADCANON 001.         THE JEFFERSON / SPIDER-MAN DYNAMIC ACROSS UNIVERSES
( + how it manifests in miles’ different reactions to becoming spider-man. )
Miles’ reaction to acquiring powers and becoming like Spider-Man is directly related to how Jefferson feels about Spider-Man and vigilantes in general. I know I don’t write ITSV Miles, but I had to scream about this bc I couldn’t stop thinking about it.
Into the Spider-Verse
“Ugh, Spider-Man. I mean, this guy swings in once a day - zip-zap-zop in his little mask - and answers to no one.”
“Dad? Do you really hate Spider-Man?” “Yeah… I mean, he’s a vigilante- What? He asked me! You know how I feel about Spider-Man…”
Jefferson says it, even if he’s a bit hesitant - he hates vigilantes, and directly links Spider-Man to that negative viewpoint multiple times. Miles probably grew up hearing his dad talk about it non-stop, because he wasn’t shocked in the car when he was driving him to school ranting about the earthquakes. He’s heard it for most of his childhood, and he chooses to like Spider-Man anyway. He’s not as much of a fanboy as he is in the game, but he’s got comics ( the one that lands on his face comes from his bunk in the dorm room ) and he’s taking pictures during Blonde!Spidey’s fight in the collider. So, he at least likes the guy.
But when he realizes he’s like Spider-Man, his first emotion is fear. He’s scared, in denial, and hoping that he’s just a normal kid. He doesn’t want to be a vigilante, scared that his dad will hate him by association.
Insomniac Universe
There’s a HUGE contrast in Jeff / Peter’s dynamic in the games. It’s much more positive, with them even joining forces to work a case. Spider-Man’s helped the cops before ( see: his dynamic w/ yuri and his interactions with the cops in fisk tower - y’know, the ones that don’t attack him after ), and it’s strongly hinted at that Jefferson comes home and tells Miles about working with him. When Miles calls his dad a hero like Spider-Man, he accepts it and stresses the fact that anybody can be a hero. There’s no harsh feelings, no distaste for him, so when Miles gets bit, it’s only natural that he’s excited.
Sure, there are things that also add to the eagerness. Being a much bigger Spider-Man fan than he was in ITSV ( or at least his excitement’s more apparent? ), the loss + martyring of his dad, being able to help even before he was bit ( the antibiotic run / rhino escape + saving may and spidey in the fire ), and his universe’s Peter not dying being some of the main ones. But digging into the source of his eagerness is a whole other hc post for another time. :eyes:
TL;DR - Regardless of the universe, Miles’ relationship with his dad is really important to his characterization. He wants his dad to be proud of him, which drives him to either accept his powers or try and hide them.

- like flicking you, sitting on you, pulling your hair and they find it hilarious bc you get so mad, smh
- soda writing (more like e n g r a v i n g) rude shit on your stuff
- so you’ve got this little ruler that has ‘SUCK MY TOES’ written across it and whenever he sees it he’s starts giGGLING
- johnny loves drawing on your arms & hands, what a cute boy
- he draws in a felt tip pen so it stays on when you have a shower, but you don’t want it to go so you’ll draw over it again
- he just draws little doodles when he gets bored, like dinosaurs, birds, ¡DOGS!
- reading competitions with pony!
- who can read the book fast enough???? he’s low key a cheat
- if there’s a film of it he’ll watch the film and be all ‘oh yeah uhhhh jack kills the groundskeeper, lol’ even tho that’s not what happens in the book! (just an example)
- there’s no prize, he deadass wants to win
- bbqs at two’s place like every saturday
- johnny barbecued a mint leaf he found once
- darry is the best at bbqs, he makes the best burgers, they’re very professional
- two bit is the host but he does not help at all!
- just runs around with a water gun
- water balloon fights in the evening!
- okay, so you’re playing with 7 strong, boys who are not going to play fair, so neither are you
- usually in two teams of four:-
- darry, johnny, pony & you
- soda, steve, two & dally
- it’s starts off pretty calm but then those juices get a'pumpin and oh lord
- once you tackled soda down, son and he was between your legs (non-kink related) and you were strANGLING HIM WITH A BALLOON
- it was those stretchy clown balloons so you had it around his neck
- you could hear him choking 'cantbreathecantbreathe’
- so you bit the balloon and the water went all over his face, then you ran
- everyone makes fun of soda now because you weren’t even strangling him that hard, he’s just too dramatic
- you and modern!pony would be the biggest FRIENDS fans ever
- his favourite would be ross because he reminds him of darry
- y'all would reenact and the rest of the gang would have no idea what was happening
- 'PIVOT PIVOT’
- pony obviously tried to recreate the opening credits on iMovie (👏👌😩😤) and half the time it was dally yelling and darry trying not to clobber steve
- the end was him smiling at an unflattering angle (IMAGINE THO)
- dally would 100% argue with you on literally anything, even if he actually agreed with you
- one time when johnny was drawing a dino on your arm dally looked at it and said, 'what if dinosaurs photosynthesised?’
- and you y e l l e d (johnny was shook)
- dally calls you out on everything
- 'i had a dream and i was in the middle of the no where-’
- 'the no where! THE NO WHERE! THE! ITS NOT THE!’
- johnny is the friend who will eat cereal with you at 4am bc he’s hungry, alone and loves you (platonically, romantically, you choose)
- modern!johnny will watch you take buzzfeed quizzes
- not even take one himself, just watches
- you draw and paint things together
- he likes the go to garden centres with you and you will buy him a plant
- steve and you would be those friends to pass each other notes and pretend to be subtle about it
- they wouldn’t make any sense?????
- 'beep beep lettuce’
- 'nice remote control u have there’
- 'zip zap zop zic, ur ass is now super thicc’
- 'crepe’
- randomly grabs your hand, pins it down and writes something
- he’s not like johnny who ¡politely! asks then draws something lovely
- he grabs your hand and writes '🅱enis’
- you do science homework together
- you and soda would like to talk about animals
- he’d tell you about Mickey Mouse, the horse, and u cried
- he wants to get you back from when you strangled him!
- throws a water balloon directly at your forehead and felt bad, but laughed anyway
- you and two bit are those fuckin obnoxious friends who find each other funny, even if they just look at each other
- you’d have a new 'thing’ every week that makes no sense
- so like you’d go 'two! look over there!’ and point the opposite way from where you’re looking
- and the you’d point to the ceiling and go 'L O O K’ and he’d look at the floor and be all like ’ A T W H A T’
- dally wants to murder you both
- you both quote the bee movie all the time
- 'BUT ITS OUR YOGHURT NIGHT
- 'THAT BEE IS LIVING MY LIFE’
- 'WHY IS YOGHURT NIGHT SO DIFFICULT?’
- you and darry are pals and complain about the other boys to each other
- you let him teach you football, even if it doesn’t really interest you, you just wanted to make him happy
- cake baking together, before soda comes along and frickIN MERKS DARRY IN THE FACE WITH FLOUR
- offering to look after pony so he can sleep -
you end up watching friends and johnny doesn’t know what’s happening, but laughs anyway

Rebalance your sleep cycle using zopiclone tablets
Tumblr media
Do you have an altering work schedule leading to an unbalanced sleep cycle? Use zopiclone tablets to deal with it. It deals with any sleep-related issues like repeated wake-ups during night sleep, problems in falling asleep, and bouts of insomnia.
It should not be continued for more than 4 weeks to avoid the risk of getting dependent on it for sleep. Solution form of zopiclone tablets, a member of the pharmaceutical class of no benzodiazepine, is also available for those finding it hard to swallow.
Who should avoid taking zopiclone tablets?
Zopiclone tablets do not work well with a few medications that you might be taking for the treatment of the following health issues. Ask the doctor to first, refer to your health issues before prescribing this medication to avoid dangerous drug interaction:
●     Mental disability
●     Pregnant or breastfeeding ladies.
●     Women trying to conceive
●     People allergic to zopiclone
●     Liver or kidney dysfunctioning
●     Respiratory problems like uneasy breathing
●     History of alcohol or drug abuse
●     Difficulty in breathing during sleep, sleep apnea
●     Patients of myasthenia gravis, a disorder of muscle weakness caused due to frequent tiredness.
Follow the dosage guidelines of zopiclone
Based on strength, there are two forms of zopiclone available in the market that are zopisign tablets 7.5mg and 10mg both as either a generic-name or a brand-name drug.
If you belong to the age group of 18-64 years, the appropriate dose consumption should be 7.5mg to be taken before an hour of going to sleep.
Children below 18 years of age must avoid it to prevent the risk of getting dependent on it.
To prevent over sleepiness in adults above 64 years of age, start giving them a lower dose of 3.75mg which later be replaced with 7.5mg under the doctor’s supervision once their body has adapted to it.
If you are facing any disorder of liver, kidney, or lungs prefer taking a dose of 3.75mg. If the doctor recommends a higher dose, go for the consumption of zopisign tablets 7.5mg.
How do they harm the body?
Any inadequate or improper dose of zopisign tablets 10mg can result in the following side effects:
●     Amnesia, loss of memory
●     Mumble speech
●     Skin allergies like skin rash
●     Sleepiness due to fatigue
●     Dryness in mouth
●     Metallic or bitter taste in the mouth
●     Behavioral abnormalities like agitation and mood swings
●     Hallucinations and delusions
●     Dizziness and drowsiness
Stay out of contact with zopiclone tablets if you are allergic to it. Consult your doctor if you come across these symptoms repeatedly before they become severe.
Important considerations regarding zopiclone tablets
●     It can make you dizzy, so do not drive until 12 hours of its consumption.
●     You can come across withdrawal symptoms like headache, muscle ache, anxiety, and fatigue after its prolonged use.
●     Strictly avoid the overdose of zop tablets 7.5mg as it directly affects the central nervous system.

Zip, Zop, ZAP! Turn The Second City into a Laser Tag Arena
By David Himmel
The greatest lesson we should take from everything in life is that the mighty will always fall.
It was announced this week that yet another famed Chicago institution is being sold off. The Second City joins the likes of iO, Marshall Fields, and the Sears Tower. And like Fields it will become an entity of grand mediocrity under its new ownership. That’s how these things go.
It’d be lovely if one or several of its alumni scooped it up and chose to return it to its former glory with an eye on creating progressively irreverent comedy and honing the comedic chops of future comedy stars. But that won’t happen. Because why would Tina Fey or Stephen Colbert or Bill Murray want the headache of owning and overseeing a Chicago theater? One of the perks of fame and success is that you don’t have to deal with that kind of misery. Maybe Dan Aykroyd will consider it. He’s into goofy business ventures. He’s into goofy business ventures. How’s that vodka company of his doing?
No. Instead, The Second City will likely be bought up by an investment firm, similar to Cirque du Soleil. And you know how those investment folks love to shred the arts to bits in the dishonorable pursuit of making more money as fast as possible while squeezing every last ounce of authenticity from the long-lauded brand that is The Second City. Many make the case that the theater fell into disarray long ago. That it’s little more than a printing press for shillings built on the backs of unpaid interns and poorly paid employees; the cool table for the uncool kids; a place where your dreams will only stretch as far as your dollar and your willingness to play social politics.
This Year of Our Lord, 2020, has revealed quite a few things about us. The recurring theme is that it’s high time our greatest institutions must die. The mighty must fall. So, as someone who interned at The Second City, went through several training programs, produced plays for its stages, here’s what I suggest happen to that theater: Turn it into a laser tag arena. Call it Zip, Zop, ZAP!
You may argue that now is not the time to open a new business, what with the pandemic and all. But laser tag is the perfect pandemic business.
It is safe, playful violence, which allows us to express our collective and individual frustrations, rage, and panic related to, well, being alive today. Laser tag guns are likely the only guns liberals feel safe operating, so it’s a superb way for the Right and the Left to shoot at each other without breaking any manmade or divine laws.
Masks can easily be worn, perhaps even becoming part of the gear players would wear during a battle session.
Social distancing is encouraged. You don’t want to spend too much time too close to your enemy. Shoot them and move on. Stay mobile. Makes you harder to hunt. You also don’t want to cluster too closely with too many of your teammates because a big group of people obviously makes for an easy target.
The gear is easily wiped down and thoroughly disinfected after each battle session. Safety first!
Don’t mourn the loss of the training center or even the performance stages. You want to be funny and perform? Get a YouTube account. Or jump on TikTok. Or Facebook Live. Or any other currently available DIY platform. See, we don’t need our old institutions anymore. They are a visage of what was. They belong in a museum, down the hall from statues of Christopher Columbus.
The space The Second City calls home in Old Town at North and Wells avenues is big enough to house multiple battle arenas. There’s also plenty of space to open up a weed café because, why not. Laser battles on THC are undoubtedly far more entertaining than more poli-sci commentary the bright minds and talented performers at The Second City could churn out.
“Zip, Zop, ZAP! Unlike most live theatre, this place is a BLAST!”
If you’re interested in investing with me, I can be reached directly at [email protected].

Why Improv makes me a good Preschool Director?
Good question.  Sometimes, when I’m head to toe in immunization records and parents with crazy requests, I ask myself why do I even want to be a Preschool Center Director? Nonetheless, a successful one.  Still, it’s an important job.  You may not realize it until you actually have a kid and face the inevitability of having to go back to work (you know, like if you want to eat).  It requires a certain type of person to do it.
It requires someone that can make a split-second decision and not second guess themselves.  You have to truly believe that your first idea is almost always your best idea. It’s kinda like that time that one of my teacher assistants was making pancakes in the microwave.  The heating time as stated on the package was 30 seconds.  This high school senior, who was a culinary major, mistook the directions and put the pancakes in the microwave for 30 minutes.  I would love to tell you that this is a joke, but I would be lying.  The minute that alarm rang, I sprang into action as I couldn’t leave the building until every child and staff member cleared. By the time the Matawan Fire Department arrived, I had an entire school of 113 children evacuated in under one minute and thirty seconds.  Do you remember the first thing you learned in improv? “Don’t think!”
Although a Preschool Director is in charge (the buck definitely stops with them), they need to be a good teammate.  I wonder where I learned that? When I go into a staff meeting, I have to humbly concede that there no such thing as “a bad idea”.  Every idea should be heard.  Recently, we lost our closing teacher.  We immediately put an ad out for a new teacher, but we needed a stop gap until that teacher was hired.  The morale of my staff was pretty decent, so I didn’t want to rock the boat and mandate someone to upend their life by changing their shift.  I was ready to fall on the sword, even though I happened to have had a small child at home.   I didn’t see another option, so I called a meeting. I began the meeting by presenting the issue but then my gut told me to open up the floor.  As I did, suddenly my team began to come up with options I could have never have thought off.  My improv background taught me to trust my team to protect me as much as I wanted to protect them.
Finally, improv has taught me that my team should not look and sound like me.  Trust me, art is a lot more fulfilling when everybody doesn’t look and sound alike.  When I walked into my first preschool, it was nothing but white girls from well-to-do neighborhoods that were using the experience as a step toward elementary education or nursing.   One day, I had an epiphany and decided to start staffing my school to reflect the surrounding neighborhood.  I staffed regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, economic status or age.  Within months, I had a staff that could relate more profoundly to my students.  When I think of how improv effected the way I staffed, I think of Mr. Brian.  He was African-American and the coach of a semi-pro football team.  He had such a profound impact, specifically on the boys at school.  He showed children, like my own son, that a big “tough” guy could be a kind, caring and compassionate teacher.   Think of what my students would have missed, had I not staffed like an improviser.  Makes you look at Zip-Zap-Zop differently, huh?

Why are games and the practice of improvised play such common tools used to teach drama?
It’s pretty safe to say that anyone who has participated in an acting class, be it in school, university, as part of an official actor training program, or just for a bit of fun on a Monday afternoon, has played a drama game. Everyone knows the classics like Space Jump and Bus Stop, and every trainer or teacher has a few lesser-known games up their sleeve – Typewriter, String of Pearls, Expert Double Figures, What Are You Doing – the list is practically endless! And of course, all the different names of these games don’t make them any easier to keep track of; is it Zip Zap Boing, Zip Zap Zop, Zip Zap Zoom, Zip Zop Zah, just Zip, just Zap, or some other similar variation?
But as fun as they are, sometimes there might be a moment where, frozen in a bizarre physical representation of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, you get the sudden thought – ‘Why am I doing this? What do knives and forks have to do with acting? Did Hugh Jackman have to make weird tableaus with a class of awkward teenagers to become a famous actor?’ (Well, maybe you haven’t thought that – but I know have!)
We all know how common drama games and improvisational play are in today’s modern classrooms; but that wasn’t always the case.
Drama Games: A Brief History
“Copeau and Suzanne Bing were perhaps the first drama teachers to recognise the value of games work…They recognised that children learn through play, and that the responses of play are natural and authentic.” (Evans 30)
One of the most well-known pioneers of using drama games and improvisational play in actor training was the French actor, director, playwright and teacher, Jacques Copeau. Copeau felt there was great importance in the association between children’s play, naturalism, and imagination – values that were influenced by the Romanticism movement and socio-political change throughout Europe during the 1800s. The growing recognition of imagination, creativity, and the arts, especially in relation to children and their ‘innocent’ or ‘natural’ state, were at the core of Copeau’s views on drama and actor training.
After spending time experimenting with his own form and performance style, Copeau established the Vieux-Colombier School in France, where he sought to expand on and teach his theories on improvisation and play in drama. His teachings on drama games strongly drew from his observations of the imaginative play of children, and the way in which they performed such an ‘unselfconscious’ form of naturalness. He believed that drama games created a space in which a student could wholly commit themselves to the art of improvisation and spontaneity, providing a perfect stimulus for imaginative play.
But Copeau was not alone in his development of training actors through play. Suzanne Bing, an actress who had worked alongside Copeau for several years, had experience working with children and the knowledge of pedagogy needed to devise new teaching techniques which made her invaluable to the development of play in drama. Before joining Copeau at the Vieux-Colombier, Bing worked briefly at Margaret Naumberg’s Children’s School, where she was exposed to some of the earliest examples of play theory and games as teaching tools. Taking this knowledge with her, Bing focused on improvisational play in her teaching at the Vieux-Colombier. Her animal games in particular “encouraged the student to engage the whole body, to escape from their habitual self-consciousness, and to use observation and analysis as the way into their ‘role’” (Ralph and Yarrow 68).
In fact, it is an emerging opinion in academia that Bing should be credited for a lot more in the development of drama games and improvised play than she has been in the past. Mark Evans sums it up nicely by saying that Bing “has been unfairly neglected…Much of the credit for discovery and invention in this new mode should rightly be hers.” (Evans 26). Nevertheless, the combined work of Jacques Copeau and Suzanne Bing was undeniably influential in the development of drama games and improvisation play as a method of actor training.
Switching from France to America, Margaret Naumberg and Neva L. Boyd were two influential figures in the development of ‘play theory’ and the use of games in teaching. Naumberg had her Walden Children’s School in New York, whilst Boyd had her Recreational Training School in Chicago; both women believed in the “liberating effects of play” (Ralph and Yarrow 58) and the “validity of games in teaching communication and social skills” (Evans 50), and were firm advocates for the adoption of games and play in any teaching setting, but particularly with children.
In 1945, Boyd published a collection of around 300 games to be used in a more educational setting. However, one of her students, Viola Spolin, later developed and systemised the games to be used in a specifically dramatic way. Through her development of Boyd’s games and theories, Spolin set some of the foundational features of the ‘Chicago style’ of actor training; in the Chicago style, “improvisation games were a way of communicating between people” (Evans 55) – and Spolin’s own definition of improvisation begins with the concept of ‘playing the game’  (Ralph and Yarrow 51).
These early ‘pioneers’ of drama games and improvisational play paved the way for more modern theorists, such as Clive Barker, Keith Johnstone and Augusto Boal, who further developed the use and style of games in actor training and teaching. Their books and other writings have been influential throughout the late 1900s, and still remain relevant and extremely useful for actors and drama teachers alike today.
But What Are These “Drama Games”, Exactly?
“Theatre games are also commonly used as warm-up exercises for actors before a rehearsal or performance, in the development of improvisational theatre, and as a lateral means to rehearse dramatic material.”               – Wikipedia, Theatre Games
Even if you’ve never played a drama game, I’d find it hard to believe you’ve never heard of them. Nowadays drama games and improvisational play are key components of drama curriculums in primary, secondary, and tertiary education; they’ve taken the Western actor training sphere by storm. Still not sure what I mean? Take a look at this clip from a little-known TV show called Whose Line Is It Anyway?
youtube
Scenes from a Hat takes a very basic principle (ask an audience for a stimulus and make something up on the spot), throws some professional improvisational comedians/actors into the mix, sprinkles in a whole lot of fun, and ends up with one of the most iconic forms of theatre sport entertainment known today. If you’re interested in finding out more, check out this article that lists the ‘top ten’ improvisation games shown in Whose Line, including Hollywood Director, Sound Effects, and Party Quirks.
“The TheatreSports game that most students know, or believe they know. If taught properly it is a very useful tool to teach over-acceptance, focus, spontaneity, using other people’s ideas and characterisation.”          – Australian Institute of TheatreSports
Now, let’s take a quick look at one of the most popular drama games used in classrooms today; Space Jump. In case you’ve never played it, here’s a quick explanation of the game’s stages:
The actors call for a stimulus, usually from the audience; this can be something like an object, a setting, or a character.
The first actor starts an improvised scene on their own using the stimulus.
Someone (it could be another actor or the teacher in a class setting) yells “Space Jump!” and the actor onstage freezes in place.
Another actor moves onstage and creates a new scene inspired by the physical position of the frozen actor – they can create any scene they want, but it has to justify the frozen actor’s position.
Steps 3 and 4 repeat until the whole team of actors are onstage together in one large (and often rather chaotic) scene.
The last actor who joined the scene must then find a reason to leave the scene – and the actors must then revert back to the previous scene, repeating this until the very first actor is the only person left onstage to wrap up the beginning scene and end the game.
                     – Andrew Hearle, Acting Games.
Sound a bit confusing? Never fear! Here’s a group of professional actors performing a game of Space Jump for your reference:

There are hundreds more drama games available online and in print for you to take a look at. Websites like Drama Toolkit or Improv Encyclopaedia have huge collections of drama games, and there have been numerous books published by play theorists and actors alike, including Augusto Boal’s Games for Actors and Non-Actors (1992) and Keith Johnstone’s Impro for Storytellers (1999).
That’s Cool And All, But What Am I Actually Learning When I Play Space Jump?
“The trainee actor returns to the games of childhood not only in order to develop further their skills in improvisation and imagination, but also to rediscover a form of playing/acting which is more ‘authentic’, more connected to the actor’s creativity, more ‘natural’.” (Evans 62)
Drama teachers everywhere have been encouraging and supporting the use of games and improvisational play in the school curriculum, citing their inherently fun and rewarding nature, and their ability to improve student’s skills in communication and confidence. Considering games in a strictly dramatic sense though, each game has a particular type of skill(s) that the actor hones in on while they play. For example, Zip Zap Zoom could be categorised as a ‘focus game’, Space Jump as an ‘improvisation game’, and Bus Stop a ‘characterisation game’ (Drama Games). Let’s have a look at how these three games develop an actor’s skillset.
Zip Zap Zoom (or one of its many other aliases) is one of the most common warm-up games used in drama classes. It is a fast-paced game, wherein actors stand in a circle and ‘pass’ a clap around, accompanied by ‘command words’ which identify what kind of clap they’re giving. Zip is a clap to the left; Zap is a clap to the right; Zoom is a clap across the circle. You’re ‘out’ if you miss a beat or say the wrong word, so eye contact and focus is essential in making sure the clap is executed correctly. Focus and maintaining implicit contact with fellow actors is a hugely important skill for an actor to hone; performances require actors to move almost like a single unit, always aware of where everyone is onstage and how to move in relation to their different bodies.
Bus Stop is another often-used drama game, this time falling under the category of characterisation. Two actors sit next to each other chairs, both committing themselves wholly to a character. The goal of the actor to the left is to get the actor to the right to leave the scene – but each must be completely in character while interacting. For example, one character may be a bit of a neat freak, and the other character sits there gratuitously coughing and scratching and sniffling all over the place. Naturally, the neat, clean character would be disgusted and leave the scene. This exercise develops the actor’s skill of characterisation – getting into the character’s head, and fully adopting a certain physicality, to create a wholly realistic person completely separate from the actor onstage.
Now, by this point you should have a pretty good understanding of how Space Jump works. But do you want to know what skills you’re learning when you play it? Well, according to the Australian Institute of TheatreSports, the game of Space Jump:
Develops core improvisation skills
Develops key theatre performance skills and performer/audience relationships
Encourages physical interaction in a group setting and awareness of others
Develops physical skills, coordination and self-control
Encourages cooperation between students
So next time someone says “Let’s play Space Jump”, don’t groan and complain that you always play that game – because there’s an excellent reason why it’s so popular! Improvisation games are a key part of any actor’s training repertoire because they encourage spontaneity and creativity, build trust and relationships between actors, and are a lot more fun than reading the same script over and over again!
“Games were not just a training device for the development of technical skills, they also prepared the actor for performance, encouraging playfulness, spontaneity and flexibility.” (Evans 66)
 So, Now You Know!
Why are games and the practice of improvised play such common tools used to teach drama? Because they work! They’re fun and engaging, and help students and actors alike hone their skills in a way that is stimulating and enjoyable. Games and play encourage us to get back in touch with our childishness, to tap into that forgotten source of imagination and total disregard for what other people might think of us. Everyone knows what it’s like to feel awkward or pressured to act a certain way in front of a group of strangers – but you watch a bunch of gangly teenagers, rife with uncertainty over who they are and how they should fit in with their peers, play a few rounds of Space Jump and I bet you they’ll be quite literally leaping around like frogs in no time at all.
“Somewhere along the line of improvised play, playful improvisation, improvised drama, real drama, new and fresh, will appear before us.” (Frost and Yarrow 30)

Was gonna make a big essay post about this but fuck it I'll just get to the point.
Writing irl fiction, especially ship stuff, is weird and you should stop it. Am I saying writing it reading it makes you a bad person? No, but it's inappropriate to treat living breathing people like fictional characters. I understand I'll probably lose some mutuals saying this, but I've finally woken up to how icky it is.
I'm not trying to be completely unsympathetic here. I get the allure of escaping into a little world with your fav band, but at that point just make your own OCs. It's easier that way and more importantly, less creepy.
