Broadway Divas Tournament: Round 1D
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is a Titan vs. Titan fight and I apologize for nothing. I woke up and chose violence throughout this entire poll.
Seven-time Tony nominee, two-time winner Bernadette Peters (1948) has a sixty-plus year stage career of monumental proportions. Considered the foremost Sondheim interpreter, their collaborative works include Sunday in the Park with George (1984), Into the Woods (1987), Gypsy (2003), and Follies (2011). She has a thriving concert career, and was a co-founder of the beloved Broadway Barks event each year in Shubert Alley. She has an honorary third Tony (Isabelle Stevenson Award) for her outstanding advocacy and philanthropy.
Eight-time Tony nominee, three-time winner Patti LuPone (1949) has a staggering fifty-plus year stage career. Award-winning roles include Eva Peron in Evita (1979), Gypsy (2008), and Company (2022). She has toured the US with her wildly successful concert and cabaret acts, and will kill you on sight if she sees a cell phone in the theatre. Patti was NOT Norma Desmond on Broadway, and because of it, is the proud owner of the ALW Memorial Pool. She is no longer a member of Actors' Equity.

PROPAGANDA AND MEDIA UNDER CUT: ALL POLLS HERE

"Do I even need to write propaganda for these women? Do they not speak for themselves? Very well. Bernadette Peters in Cinderella (1997) was my very first, official, undisputed gay awakening. I was three, and enamored with the stepmother. This would prove to be a blueprint in my life, and well, here we are, twenty-some-odd years later, with a thing for stage actresses who play redheaded stepmothers in various Cinderella adaptations. It's a surprisingly common phenomenon."

"This woman can breech the sound barrier. The reverberation she gets on that one note in her Anything Goes Tony performance physically rearranges every atom in my body every time I hear it. Patti is THE definition of a Broadway Diva, with more than just a little touch of star quality. Her 54 Below show was an absolute riot from start to finish."

(Please note, dear voters, that the above quote is from a clickhole article, and Patti LuPone never actually said it, but it would be on-brand of her if she had.)

Literally just me gushing about eurobeat
Y'know what? Tumblr, you get a little treat. I don't have much better of a place to post something long-winded like this, so here we are.
I love eurobeat music. Big surprise from the girl with it in her handle, right? But I don't just love one kind of eurobeat. No, I'd go so far as to say I love it all. This genre becomes an absolute buffet of delightful, energetic, silly fun when you forget about trying to look for ways it "doesn't count", and try to look for the ways it does.
I love early eurobeat! I love the stuff that's indistinguishable from early Italo Disco, the formative things where the tempo was still low and the disco vibes were still high! That's Eurobeat and the first few volumes of Super Eurobeat are great for this!
I love later eurobeat, too! Even if some of the sounds aren't always my favorites, I love that folks were trying new things and dabbling with new sounds, experimenting in ways that in previous years seemed prohibited! Comparing some aliases who have been going for multiple decades from this period to when they started is also super fun!
I love traditional eurobeat, if I could pick a name for it! Faster, more rave-influenced, whether or not it's still got some disco elements in it, themes about nightclubs and love and loss and betrayal and that ever-ubiquitous fire! Maharajah Night has some great examples, leading into the bulk of pre-200 Super Eurobeat volumes!
I love J-Euro! It turns out, folks in Japan have different ideas and tastes and approach the genre VERY differently than the folks in Italy do, and I love how it sounds! I love how the sound design is so different and the speed jumps a little higher!
I love indie eurobeat! I love hearing how new and amateur producers take a crack at the sound, and seeing what folks do as the tools for making it grow and evolve! Even virtual versions of the synths the masters used to use are available now, and it's fantastic to hear how those things sound in new hands! I love the ways indie producers bend, break, and work around the rules of the genre and still deliver a uniquely "eurobeat" experience! Without this category, I would never have found DJ Command, DJ Bouche, Turbo, Vikas Beatbox, the Galaxian Recordings crew, and so, so many more!
I love happy eurobeat! The nature of the genre makes it so straightforward to pair its signature energy with joy, delight, empowerment!
I love sad eurobeat! That very same energy that powers joy and happiness can be just as powerful for driving home sorrow and sadness, and some lyrics even carry strong emotional weight (we're well past the days of eurobeat being only about Burning Love Car Baby Fire Desire Tonight Drift Tokyo, y'know)!
I love fandom eurobeat! Yup! Vocaloid, Touhou, MLP:FiM, Vtubers; whatever you may be a fan of, chances are good there's a eurobeat remix out there (or even an original) that suits your fancy!
I love Initial D eurobeat! How could I not, right? The classics are classics for a reason, and eurobeat and drift racing are a uniquely fantastic pair. Of all the things eurobeat could be about, it's one of a few that really knock it out of the park!
I love feminine eurobeat! Masculine eurobeat is great too, but it already gets a lot of love in the other categories, so I want to celebrate those eurobeat songs that feel quite the opposite while still being perfectly eurobeat! Eurobeat is broad enough to express feelings like this, too!
I love songs that aren't quite eurobeat, but have elements of it! And I love eurobeat songs that heavily include elements from other genres, too! Eurobeat is like any other genre-- it has not always had the same chances to rub shoulders with other sounds in the dance space, but when it does, some wonderful things happen! And the whole music world is enriched for that cross-pollenation!
I love the songs I used to dislike! To think I'd go from vastly disliking Norma Sheffield's discography, to adoring it so fully! Disliking "Higher Higher More and More" to seeking it out from time to time! Not being fond of SAIFAM/BBB's style, to knowing some of its songs by heart!
And most of all, I love that I get to MAKE this stuff for a living! I do not take the fact that this could've not worked out trivially, and I hope I've rewarded your patiences well with a lot of new favorites and starting points for diving deeper into the genre over the last... almost 20 years, now!
And that's just the tip of the iceberg! I understand some eurobeat isn't to everyone's taste, but I think if you haven't tasted all that there is out there, you owe it to yourself to see how you feel about it. You might be pleasantly surprised!

Hannah Waddingham Confronts Photographer Who Asked Her To “Show Leg”: “Don’t Be A Dick”
Tumblr media
Hannah Waddingham called out a photographer at the Olivier Awards who apparently asked her to “show leg” as she posed for pictures.
The Emmy-winning Ted Lasso star hosted the London theatre awards on Sunday night and before the gong-giving got underway she walked the steps of the Royal Albert Hall.
As she stopped for photos, Waddingham confronted a snapper after hearing a comment about her legs, according to a video posted by a fan account.
“Oh my God, you’d never say that to a man,” Waddingham said. “Don’t be a dick otherwise I’ll move off. Don’t say ‘show me leg.’ No.”
The actress then shook her head and walked off. She continued to exchange words with the photographer as she moved on, raising her finger.
Succession star Sarah Snook and singer-actress Nicole Scherzinger were among the big winners at the 2024 Olivier Awards on Sunday.
Snook picked up the Best Actress gong for her multi-character performance in the Sydney Theatre Company’s version of Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray.
Scherzinger landed Best Actress in a Musical for her turn as Norma Desmond in the recent revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Broadway-bound Sunset Boulevard.
Opening the awards, Waddingham performed a number with singer and pianist Joe Stilgoe. Waddingham, who will be seen on the big screen this year in The Fall Guy and Mission Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 2, also hosted last year’s ceremony.

What did you do before you became an idol? Did you sell thneeds in the past?
Tumblr media
"In the early 2000's, I went on an adventure to find the perfect fibers to make my product. Once I found them, I made my first Thneed. Stayed up all night and all day for days making Thneeds. However, when they became popular... While being a useful item, they destroyed the environment with recklessness (trying to find a way to clip the fibers, trying to find a way to grow them ourselves).... We were too lazy to care. There were always enough trees, until there wasn't. I don't know if you've heard of him, but the Lorax came down after the last tree was cut down and had given up on me. I lost so many friends. I lost my family. I lost everything." "...Until Norma convinced me to play music and sing. She told me I had true talent as a musician/idol and it felt great to hear someone from my childhood support me!" "Being an idol and musician doesn't hurt anyone. I get to make people laugh, cheer and dance and earn enough income to fuel the forest I destroyed." "Never forget about the environment. Never forget about animal rights."

Another song for Pride month about breaking social norms, this one goes for aromantic people and all people who don't want to pair up.
The song is "Ai, mare" by the band Tito Pontet (a band that mostly makes cumbia, reggae and calypso music) featuring Noelia Llorens "Titana" (a singer of traditional Valencian music).
These are the lyrics in Valencian Catalan and the translation to English:
Nits i vespres plens de festa, / juntes 'nem perdent el seny, / el meu cor balla amb la resta, / que sense elles no soc res.
Nights and evenings full of festivities, / together we gradually lose common sense, / my heart dances with the rest, / for I'm nothing without them.
Cantarem la nostra vida, / esta és la nostra elecció, / ja em fa igual tota eixa 'criba', / ja no vull més redempció.
We will sing our life, / this is our choice, / I don't care anymore about all that narrowing down, / I don't want more redemption.
Jo no vull tenir un home, / millor fadrina que casà. / A tots els que em dieu coses: / ja mai més em fareu mal.
I don't want to have a man, / better maiden than married. / And to all those who criticise me: / you'll never hurt me again.
Sense por fem front a l’ona, / nadem davant de taurons. / Despenjades de la norma / perquè el premi és molt millor.
With no fear we face the wave, / we swim in front of sharks. / Shaking off the norm / because the prize is so much better.
Cantarem la nostra vida, / esta és la nostra elecció, / ja em fa igual tota eixa 'criba', / ja no vull més redempció.
We will sing our life, / this is our choice, / I don't care anymore about all that narrowing down, / I don't want more redemption.
Jo no vull tenir un home, / l’altar mai he de xafar. / Consellers i xafarderes, / ja m’haureu de perdonar.
I don't want to have a man, / I shall never step on an altar. / Consultants and gossipers, / you'll have to forgive me*.
*this last line is made in an ironic tone.

I’ve been healing my inner child by playing piano again. Music when I was a kid was one of my biggest passions (it still is!). I was obsessed, I could read music, I got up to grade 5 on piano, 8 on clarinet and trained in classical singing. I also took G.C.S.E music 2 years early!
But over the years, it faded away. Other things were “more important”. I lost my skills and it felt like losing a loved one, a best friend. And after leaving this exact childhood piano 7 years ago, I finally have it back and I’m slowly re-learning and falling in love again!
Music has and always will heal me and be there for me🖤
Song is Casper’s lullaby from the Casper movie soundtrack👻
P.S sound up for adorable meow at the end!

A LAST GOODBYE
“I put the record on
Wait 'til I hear our song
Every night I'm dancing with your ghost”
PARING: Norma Bates x F!Reader
A/N: My friend decided to kick the bucket and I’ve finally been able to get back into the headspace of writing. I was trying to give delirium but idk if it was successful. Anyway, please enjoy and to whom ever requested this I hope it fits your standards.
Ps. sorry for any errors I did not feel like proof reading.
SUMMARY: REQUEST! anon: reader has a hard time accepting the fact that norma is dead, and her grief has made her somewhat delusional to where she believes that norma is still alive.
WARNINGS: ghost (?)
WORD COUNT: 412 (short one)
Your night was like every other night, lonely. Counting sheep, one…two…three…four hundred. Sleep never seemed to come and neither did Norma. You couldn’t remember how many days it’s been since you’ve actually slept. Three days or maybe it was five.
The second you began to drift off into sleep, you heard loud music coming from downstairs. It startled you so you press your eyes close as you try to calm your racing heart. Once you feel it regulate, you slip out of bed, wrapping your throw blanket around yourself and you journey down the stairs.
You see the living room light shining down the corridor. It’s cold, colder than normal you think to yourself. Reaching the living room, you see Norma standing in front of the record player. Her blonde hair lays loosely to her shoulders and her white cotton night gown meets her ankles. The light is a perfect contrast to her skin.
She has a record in her hand with a smile on her face, she takes off the current record and puts on the new one. As it begins to play she looks over to you “Wanna dance?”
You smile at her and join her in the middle of the living room. Her hands are cold, yet they warm you. You both spin around the room, your bodies swaying hypnotically in time with the music. She hums in your ear as she holds your body close to hers and as the song draws to an end, so does the spin of the room.
“I’ve always loved dancing with you to that song.” She whispers. Her cold lips press a kiss to the side of your cheek.
“I know.” You whisper back to her, backing up slightly to see her face. “Let’s go to bed?”
There’s sadness in her eyes, yet she still smiles. You furrow your brows as you tilt your head. “What’s the matter?”
“I’m dead, remember?” And with that, darkness fills the room and it grows quite and cold.
“How do I keep forgetting that?” Only then does the loneliness you’ve been trying to run from, slowly and quietly creeps back in. It embraces you, and you let it. It dances through your body like you and Norma were doing moments ago. As much as you’ve tried to stop yourself from crying, your tears still fall in vein and no matter how many of them stain your cheeks and soak into your clothes norma wasn’t coming back.

Me having to come up with a reason to draw Lizzie singing: “uhhhh intern karaoke night? is that anything?”
Also have a list of what I think everyone else would sing (aka it’s my art and I get to choose the music): Norma - Doesn’t (will NOT risk embarrassing herself) Frazie - Doesn’t know a lot of music/In the process of being introduced to new stuff but sings These Boots Are Made For Walkin’ by Nancy Sinatra Adam - Call Me by Blondie Morris - You Spin Me Round (Like A Record) by Dead or Alive Sam - Waterloo by ABBA Gisu - You Give Love a Bad Name by Bon Jovi Raz - Knows even less than Frazie but gets heckled to sing Rasputin by Boney M because the interns think it’s hilarious Lili (even tho I forgot to draw her </3) - We Got the Beat by The Go-Go’s

My idol debut at Chile's Local Idol Fest [out of idol chara]
Setlist:
"Mikan" - Morning Musume
"Osu! Kobushi Tamashii" - Kobushi Factory
"Omatsuri Debut Da Ze!" - OCHA NORMA
youtube
First: I'm an idol?
Well, this Sunday 08.10.2023 I debuted with my bestie as idols, kaigai/overseas idols to be specific (think bout the japanese idols not korean please, all different), while we just sing covers at the moment I am actually learning composition and studying jpop as a whole to be able in a, hopefully, close future be able to release our own music.
Using this as a basis, we still can say i'm an idol for kaigai standards.
Second: Our group
Tumblr media
Our group is called "Asa Star" (if you translate it it would be Morning Star) i came out with the name as a agnostic who loves stuff about angels and devils/demons, and well, "Lucifer Morning Star" was the most beautiful angel and God's right hand until he was banned from heaven and became the devil, the fallen angel. And we do relate a bit to an angel and devil (me devil) and can fit a thematic with it. (This group has a lot of lore and it will be develouped as well)
Our stage names follow the theme with a mix of our own names' meanings.
Me being: Giseishan (as using a lot of translators Gisei means sacrifice, and Giseisha means sacrificer, the n at the end it's for cutesy; and my name's meaning is "the one who makes sacrifices")
My bestie being: Jun-chan (one of the many kanjis that you can read as Jun means purity, and my friend's names means "the pure and beautiful one")
It's totally fiting to the theme right?
Originally tho, we formed in september 2019, and debuted at an online event in december 2021.
Third: The effort
You can guess it wasn't easy at all, we had a bad luck strike for a while, which i won't really talk bout.
But the moment we saw this oportunity, I, as the one who actually works editing anything sound related, started to create setlist options, i'd lie if i say we didn't have close friends' help tho.
I also recorded harmonies and background vocals for this instrumental and it wouldn't be so flat, and also have some guides to follow.
Tumblr media
Besides that we actually rehearsaled twice together, mostly because we don't dance, friend has a bit of disability that doesn't let her. (yes, you can be an idol even if you have any kind of disabilities, you can look at Kamen Joshi's Igari Tomoka) but mostly to check up our harmonies and we some key movements on stage between our whole improvisation)
Must say as well, that while my bestie did the "manager" stuff of applying to the event, asking a lot of stuff... While i made technical stuff, and i also dessigned our outfits (made by a neighbour tho)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Four: The Debut!
So the big day arrived, the costumes done just the night before but fitting and all. Nervousness and excitement. We went to the event, met friends, did the soundcheck, fixing make up and hair at the dressing rooms. All ready, and we went on stage after the respective groups before us, we had the crowd cheering us, tbh they waited for us for a couple of years, but they were excited, sadly, at the first chorus in our last song the audio was cut, i tried to keep going acapella, till i heard the next group's track... i couldn't, they played it again, it failed... We got on stand by in case we were able to fix it, we were, so like an hour later we were able to finish the performance. And every one cheered us A LOT, i like to think we went back even stronger.
That in a way tho, i'm happy about this, tho i'm very self critical, i got ahead of my lines in the first song twice, i forgot some lines tho i grasped them midway, i bumped on my friend once... We also lacked of a eyecatching performance.
My friend is more self critical (she really didn't like the performance on her side) because her mic got too low (they changed her mic), she sang some parts out of tune (not badly tho, and also not weird with the same japanese idols, we love some that are even tone deaf)...
She got to cry on stage when our last song got cut by technical problems... And got extremely frustrated between and after our performances (still tbh, she went on an undefined hiatus cuz she doesn't want to come back unless she can deliver a better performance)... I still think it was nice as it was basically her first time performing, i did some stuff years ago at school on the other hand.
Anyways it will get better, that's what i think the next time it will be better, we just need to practice more, be critical and try not to be self destructive!
That's all. Those are my thoughts i think
Now some pics tho i feel a bit weird bout sharing them here

List 5 things that make you happy, then put this in the askbox for the last 10 people who reblogged something from you! get to know your mutuals and followers <3
Hi Zia!! Thank you so much for the ask, I'm really excited to share my answers here! It was real hard to pick, but I had fun!!
5 - My girlfriend!! We met on tumblr years ago when I was looking for an artist to commission, and found out she lived real close by! We became friends, and then it all just kinda snowballed from there really. We really enjoy each other's company, and usually call once a day at night before bed to spend a little time together! She means a lot to me, and I'm really happy to have met her! I really love her, she means the world to me, and I always do my best to make sure she knows that. y'know what she's asleep right now but I'm gonna message her and tell her how much she means to me thank you for making me think about her
4 - My family! My sister especially; we're very close, and love to do pretty much everything together. I usually watch her play games on some of her consoles, maybe we'll watch shows together, all kinds of stuff. She's always been there for me and helped me be the person I am today, so I really appreciate her and all she's done for me! This also includes my cats. Me and my sister jointly own three cats; Quinn, the oldest (and my profile picture), Binky (looks just like Quinn but smaller), and Leon (typical white and orange cat). They all mean a lot to me! I try not to take their companionship for granted, even if they wake me up at all hours of the night lol
3 - Space & space exploration! Really, mostly just in our own solar system. And for the exploration part, just stuff from the 70s-80s and concepts from then. I really love the optimism of the 70s, and all they had thought we would achieve by now. And honestly, a lot of concepts developed around that time still hold up to this day; O'Neill cylinders, space-based solar power, maglev-based launchers, stuff like that! I really hope someday we can get rid of these capitalist chains and focus on making the world and universe a brighter place. I'm a firm believer that we're here to spread the gift of life as far as possible, allowing for as many beings as possible to enjoy the experience of… well, being. Life is very precious, and I fully believe that the exploitation and development of space is something we need to do in order to help bring the gift of life to as many worlds as possible. That being said, I hate Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and every single astrocapitalist asshole who dreams of turning the stars into nothing but lifeless ash with a burning passion. I hope they all choke. Also, my favorite objects in our solar system are Uranus and her moons, and Venus lol
2 - Music! I know it gets said a lot, but music is a very important thing for me. I don't listen as much as I used to, but I still try to as much as I can. I usually listen to stuff only from the 1960s-1990s, but I do branch out every now and again! I really love folk music from the earlier part of that time frame, with musicians like Norma Tanega, Emitt Rhodes, Jim Sullivan, and more taking up a large amount of my favorites there. I also really like international music, especially Soviet stuff! It's so interesting to hear the different melodies and instruments, as well as singing styles. It's such a neat crossroad of cultures, there was so much interesting & beautiful sounding stuff! It's a shame that it's largely ignored over here in the west.
Also, I'm currently on a big Telex kick right now, though! They were a Belgian band from the late 70s into the 80s, and made music that was synthesizer only. I've liked them for quite some time, but it's just kinda coming back full force right now! On top of that, I will admit... Sometimes autism gets the better of me and I can and will listen to a song dozens of time in a row lol.
1 - My book series I'm writing and developing! I really don't like to talk about it (shy + nervous), but it means a lot to me. I'm chronically ill and can't really do too much, so writing has been one of the only things I can do when I get the energy. Even then, progress is far and few between, but it's better than nothing! Long story short, it's a hard sci-fi novel series about an alien race's journey in exploring their world, system, and beyond. Despite being about space exploration and first contact between them and us, it's more about love, friendship, and finding your own place in the universe than it is about war, action, or anything like that. I wanted to write this because I was tired of the typical "woahhh aliens are invading..." type of thing; I wanted something more about understanding and kindness, rather than about hatred and fear.
I've got like... 7 books total planned, with three of those being "prologues" but still like +70k words each. It's a long, arduous process, but it's something that I'm proud of and happy to do. I honestly don't know what my long term plans are for it, if I'll publish it or not. If I do, I'll probably make sure I have at least two of the other books done first, that way I have time to let myself work on the others at my own pace. I do love talking about it, but more likely in private than on my public blog; I'm incredibly shy lol
Thank you so much for this ask, it was a lot of fun! I'll be sure to spread it to some of my friends here, then. I really appreciated this!
Take care, and have a good rest of your day!!!

January 2nd: Maria Callas Walks off Stage
Standing on the stage in front of the President of Italy and most of Rome’s high society, Maria Callas walks off of stage after the first act of Bellini’s Norma. The crowd, waiting for her to come back, eventually booed and chastised her for not returning during the second act. The management ended the night by telling some 3,000 patrons that the opening show would be moved to that next Saturday and the show that night would not go on. Callas would later tell reporters that she was pressured to go on that night and had thought that she should not, but did anyway.
Now, an Opera Singer walking off stage during a performance, even one as big as this, may not seem like a major thing in history; but the singer is attributed with being the reason for the resurgence of 19th Century Operatic works during her time. She was very popular during the 50’s and 50’s and 60’s, and quite frankly still now as many opera fans still adore her. She also appeals to many aspects of the entertainment world, specifically with Angelina Jolie’s portrayal and “responsibility to Maria’s life and legacy” within a forthcoming biopic.
Her walking off after act one hit newspapers in the states the next day, The New York Times reporting several different articles about the reception of her leaving the show after the first act. According to an article written by Paul Hofmann for the paper, hundreds of protestors had gathered in front of Callas hotel and “policemen swinging truncheons charged the crowd repeatedly before order was restored.” Hofmann also reported that supposedly the singer had scene a doctor that night and had taken some quinine, which is an anti-malarial medication.
With the travel of performing all over the world, it would make sense that Callas was possibly exposed to an area that may have malaria carrying mosquitos. But it she was still ill during rehearsals and before the performance, why would she let herself go on and take the role?
This supposedly wasn’t the first time that she had caused some form of major drama though that the media felt the need to report on what seems to be regularly. There were reports of her breaking contracts with opera companies, an article specifically on Jan 28th 1958, not even a month after her debacle in Rome, reports that she was reprimanded for a breaking of contract that the American Guild of Musical Artists ruled was not completely justified.
Upon some more digging, there was an article from the New York Times on November 4th, 1956, that she been performing and finished the performance “despite a slight throat ailment,” on a performance of Norma at the Met. I find it odd myself that there is two reports of her being sick during the same role.
I could most likely go on for some time about the turbulent life of hers simply based on the database of New York Times articles I’ve located during her active career. There are a few lawsuits listed, some contracts ending, apparently Londoners being furious with here, and so much more.

Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey in Romeo and Juliet (Franco Zeffirelli, 1968)
Cast: Leonard Whiting, Olivia Hussey, John McEnery, Milo O'Shea, Pat Haywood, Robert Stephens, Michael York, Bruce Robinson. Screenplay: Franco Brusati, Masolino D'Amico, Franco Zeffirelli, based on a play by William Shakespeare. Cinematography: Pasqualino De Santis. Production design: Lorenzo Mongiardino. Film editing: Reginald Mills. Music: Nino Rota.
This is prime Zeffirelli, when he was attracting attention for not only movies but also operas with lavish sets and traditional costumes. His style has fallen out of favor now: Both moviegoers and opera lovers now want a fresh point of view on the classics. His 1998 production of La Traviata at the Metropolitan Opera was replaced in 2011 by the minimalist Willy Decker production whose action took place on a large clock face. And in 1996, Baz Luhrmann's movie Romeo + Juliet set the story of the star-crossed lovers in the fictional, gang warfare-riddled town of Verona Beach. But Zeffirelli's 1968 version of Romeo and Juliet remains fresh, largely because it is one of the few Shakespeare plays that lend themselves to movies: It has as much passionate romance and lively action as a moviegoer could want, and if you throw in a little discreet nudity, as Zeffirelli did, what's not to like?* Well, it could be a little more respectful to Shakespeare's verse, large chunks of which are cut for the sake of lively, breathtaking swordfights. Gone, for example, is Juliet's rapturous soliloquy in Act III, Scene II:
Come, gentle night, come, loving black-brow'd night, Give me my Romeo, and, when he shall die, Take him and cut him out in little stars, And he will make the face of heaven so fine That all the world will be in love with night And pay no worship to the garish sun.
And when Juliet is preparing to drink the potion that will simulate death, we get none of her terrors of being sealed in the Capulet tomb. Zeffirelli's version is a safe compromise between the too-reverent George Cukor production for MGM in 1936, and Luhrmann's souped up modern version, but Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey are preferable to the aging Norma Shearer and Leslie Howard, and they handle the verse better than Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes did in Luhrmann's film. One thing the Zeffirelli film also has going for it is Nino Rota's score, which grew over-familiar when it became a best-selling LP but is still evocative today. And there are some good actors in the cast, including Michael York's Tybalt, Pat Heywood's Nurse, and Milo O'Shea's Friar Lawrence, not to mention Laurence Olivier's uncredited narrator. (Olivier also supplied the voice for the Italian actor playing Montague.)
*Whiting and Hussey later found something not to like about the nudity, and filed suit in 2022, saying that they were underage at the time of the filming and had been tricked by Zeffirelli into the nude scene. The suit was dismissed, but they have said they would appeal the decision.
