The Great Potato Expedition happens late Riders of Berk when Little Fish and Big Tooth get vorpentitus! When Younger tries the Mission Impossible route and fails, Elder takes more drastic measures to get into the great hall. That is-- tricking Norbert the Nutjob into believing Elder is Heather's twin brother and always has been.

Meanwhile, the twins split off from the main group to cover more ground in looking for the potato. They take advantage of the entire tribe throwing a party in the great hall by pilfering through Norbert's empty house. One of these things is a Weird-Ticking-Thing. Wonder what that's good for.

Httyd books in just a couple words...

Positives:

Entertaining. Creative. VIKINGS. DRAGONS. Swordfights, songs, libraries, challenges, quests, prison breaks, wisdom, arch-enemies. Great themes of love and friendship, endurance, bullying, and false appearances. "Man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart." In this case, the reader. The reader knows Hiccup's heart. How unfortunate that the reader can't advocate for him or help his cause!!! Hiccup must figure it out all on his own. Awesome horrors.

Negatives:

Too doomy and gloomy. The wins rarely make up for the losses, the beauty scarcely for everything which is nasty. The atmosphere is mostly depressing. In-universe logic isn't consistent and tends to get bended for the plot.

Overall:

Don't know. I likely won't re-read the books, because I enjoyed the movies and shows more. There were a few captivating creative ideas, and the books explain so wonderfully how the movie!verse came to be. But I have to say that the book!verse isn't among my favorite fictional universes - neither in setting nor in plot.

Favorite characters: One-Eye and Camicazi!!

Least favorite characters: Madguts The Murderous, Gumboil.

Favorite book: Book 4 - How To Cheat A Dragon's Curse. All of it.

Least favorite book: Book 5 - How To Twist A Dragon's Tale because what even was that.

Best scenes: Hiccup stealing the potato, Hiccup on Norbert the Nutjob's ship, Hiccup escaping the Sharkworms in Book 3, the cave behind the waterfall, the Meathead Public Library, pretty much every conversation with Old Wrinkly, Hiccup & Alvin in the underwater sea cave, meeting Excellinor, the prison revolt around the Slavemark, Bertha & Stoick bickering about that one dragon they stole from Madguts I think??, Eggingarde's arc, Hiccup discovering the crown.

Not doing worst scenes...

Favorite creative choices: The potato, THE FIANCES OH MY GOSH, the Romans being part of the universe, nano-dragons, Camicazi, Grimbeard's red herrings.

Eggingarde and Norbert

Eggingarde:

Are there objectively better characters in HTTYD than Eggingarde? Yes. But this isn't about objectivity and facts. This is a character Opinion bingo and in my opinion Eggingarde is the best character. She's been a slave for years and years, but she still wears the clothing of her people. She holds on to every scrap of her culture in any way that she can. She refuses to let her fellow slaves give in to despair and sadness even when she herself wavers. She tries to make herself feel less small by scaring people many times bigger and stronger than her, but only if they're in the same boat as her. Only if she knows they won't hurt her for doing so. Are there any other wanderers in the amber slavelands? Do we see them? Does the narrator mention them? In How to Sieze a Dragon's Jewel, she's surrounded by Vikings. She's the only Wanderer in her group. I don't know what to make of this fact, but it's interesting.

She deserves every happiness in the world and at the end of her part in the story she gets it. I accidentally wrote her into a different fic for a different fandom. My favorite character.

Norbert the Nutjob:

What if you took the mad scientist crazy inventor archetype and then made them a slaver and then gave them an offscreen redemption arc for no discernible reason. People talk about Alvin's uncanny ability to survive anything but the last time we saw this man he was drowning in the wrong side of the North Atlantic ocean after being judged by Thor and found wanting. How did he get to tomorrow. Why was he there. How didn't the Wanderers know who he was and then promptly make good on all the threats Bearcub's Scary Grandmother made. Not the most baffling writing decision Cowell has ever made but definitely up there. Is he funny? sure. Do I like him? He's alright. Decent and funny. A solid recurring villain.

Saying that HTTYD is good despite being nothing like the books, I think they should have borrowed more from the books for film 2 and 3 and Rome should have turned up, complete with Terrible Italian Accents by David Tennant (audio books).

And Alvin The Treacherous could have been more like the books and he would have made a great overarching villain for the final film too. Or perhaps Norbert the Nutjob.

And I will be forever sad we didn't get to meet Big Boobied Bertha 😔
