TIaF Edits Teaser - Chapter 13
“I wasn’t joking, Great Sage,” Zan replies bluntly. He folds his hands in front of him, his smile falling to a more neutral expression. “Due to the details of this deal, I cannot tell you anything more than I already have. I have reasons for my actions, and the first thing I wanted to ensure was my nibling’s safety. Crafting this deal was the best way to do such a thing.”
Wukong’s mouth presses into a thin line, his tail whipping behind him and slapping against the floor. He has to stop doing it before he accidentally breaks the floorboards, opting to tightly wrap his tail around his ankle. He crosses his arms, his nails sharpening to claws and digging into his arm.
Zan closes his eyes and slowly inhales, then lets out a sigh. He massages his temple, saying, “I can tell you disagree with this—”
Oh, really? The look on my face wasn’t enough to tell you?
“—but I must have your trust with this. Just like how I’m giving you trust to help my nibling.”
“And I can help them by getting rid of the problem,” Wukong says now, clapping his hands together and making a gesture that says, do you not understand the problem here? “There’s a demon that hurt them. They relapsed—regressed—their progress ruined. And I can fix half the problem via ripping that demon apart and—”
“Sun Wukong,” Zan says, his voice now like the crack of a whip that reminds Wukong of his mama. It makes his jaw snap shut right quick and his spine go stiff. “Your anger is speaking for you. You know that regret comes soon after anger, especially when actions are inspired by such a thing.”

I was thinking about the Stone Monkey AU and had a few thoughts.
Like when Macaque drops MK off on FFM, it would be during the night as the everyone would be asleep, including MK. (Plus its easier to use his shadow magic at night.) You said MK would have been dropped off between the ages of 1-3 and that Zan is a year older. So she is about 2-4, right?
So in the morning, Zan and Wukong have woken up and are starting to prepare for the day. Say usually Zan goes to play for a bit while Wukong makes breakfast. Wukong let's her, knowing she would respond to a call for food and he knows Mami is usually nearby to help watch his chaotic child.
Zan opens the door and sees baby MK sleeping all curled up in his blanket peacefully. But she is confused as she doesn't recognize the young monkie and calls for her Baba. She is so loud, it startles MK awake.
Now the poor thing has woken up suddenly to a loud, surprising noise from someone he doesn't recognize, is in a place he doesn't know and can't see Macaque anywhere.
So what does he do?
He cries and chirps for Macaque only to receive no reply back. Wukong hearing his daughter call for him, crying and chirping from another baby monkie, comes rushing over and thus starts MK's new life.
I know this was going to be heartbreaking when I first came up with it, but I didn't expect it to hurt this much!
Just, poor baby MK calling out for Macaque and getting no response back. And instead this stranger monkey yoguay try to pick you up and hold you.

10 Different Happenings: Sun Wukong
In different worlds, there are different what-ifs. Here’s ten what-ifs for the Monkey King.
(1 is @winterpower98's Cursed AU with her OCs Zan and Mami. 2. Is the Wukong turning to stone idea that I know at least Winter, @ninja-knox-ur-sox-off, and @urlocalllama have played with. 3 is the Delirious Wukong idea of @smallpwbbles. 4 is from @sketching-shark's Primate in Human Clothing AU. 6 is @animemoonprincess's Rock Garden AU. 7 is @purble-turble's Good Noodles Bad Peach AU.)
-_-
1.
“Here you go Zan,” Wukong cooed as he spread out the towel. He had spent all of last night looking for these- the best of each fruit that grew on Flower Fruit Mountain. Mami had told him that the small pink monkey was ready for solid foods and he was going to make sure it was memorable. “Hope you enjoy it.”
“I’m sure she will, my dear,” Mami said, sitting next to him. They watched as Zan sniffed at the fruits, considering. “You found the best, after all.”
He did! He was a good food provider! Wukong puffed up his chest in pride. Then a “Neeh.” broke through his thoughts and he looked down.
Zan had taken a bite of a beautiful, perfect peach. Except she leaned away from it, a look of disgust painting her features. From the peach. A perfect, lovely-
"She doesn't like peaches," Wukong realized. Zan dropped the peach, grabbing the strawberry. A look of delight lit up her features as she bit into it. "What did I do wrong?!"
Mami chuckled as he sobbed, Zan paying no attention to her caretaker's dramatic wails.
2.
He was dying.
Sun Wukong knew this.
Stone crackled up his legs. He didn't try to fight it. This was what he had wanted, after all. To die.
Qi Xiaotian was long gone, furious and angry at him. He hated leaving things like this. The kid deserved better. The stone grew, reaching his chest.
But it seemed like Wukong had no choice.
The stone grew.
But, in the end… the kid was safe. He had people he could count on as he worked through his powers. Lady Bone Demon was on the ropes, her stolen power and the vessel she had grown dependent on out of her reach. Everything was going to be fine.
The stone grew.
Wukong closed his eyes.
The stone grew.
Warm hands cupped his face and he couldn't help a smile with what little flesh he had left.
"Hey, Master."
"Hello, Wukong."
(He didn't hear Xiaotian's scream of horror when he found him.)
3.
His thoughts were blurry.
Wukong blinked, his eyelids feeling as heavy as stone. The ringing in his ears died down, allowing a voice to break through. “-King! Monkey King, are you okay!”
Oh, Xiaotian was here! Yay! He liked Xiaotian.
Oh, and there were two of him! That was nice.
He told all this to his successor, not noticing the further panic on his student’s face.
4.
Sun Wukong couldn’t help but glance over after an hour.
Qi Xiaotian’s freakout was still fresh on his mind, even with the good food and good company he had been with. He was still new to this. This thing. Teaching. Teaching, which was proving itself to be even more nerve-wracking than rebuilding relationships with people he had beaten up in the past. And maybe he had screwed up in some way but hopefully, it could be fixed. The fresh memory of Xiaotian requesting a face mark, a face mark like his, gave him hope.
A glint of yellow caught his eye and led it to where his student was. He sat on the balcony next to Long Xiaojiao and Red Son, the latter two loudly talking about something (or maybe arguing he still couldn’t tell the difference with those two’s friendship) while his student ate a peach. A small, comfortable smile decorated his face.
Wukong couldn’t help his own smile, relaxing as he turned back to Demon Bull King and Macaque King, both making some bet.
5.
Wukong didn’t get there in time.
When he arrived, all he found was the smoking remains of some kind of ship. And bodies.
And Qi Xiaotian, his face frozen forever in a look of pure hopelessness.
6.
The last time Wukong had formed a flower crown, it was on a sunny afternoon and Tang Sazang gently worked his fingers through his fur. The aging monk hadn’t even stopped when the orchids bloomed to life. Instead, he had laughed, saying “It is true, you are one of the most beautiful flowers in the garden.”
And then he passed away not even a week later.
His brothers disappeared. The Demon Bull King had raged before ending up under a mountain.
In the end, Sun Wukong was alone.
The flowers had drooped before eventually withering away. The vines grew and grew, the stone of his body cracking as they tightened. Wukong had tried to pull the vines off, only finding himself sobbing in pain. With nothing else to do, he left them alone.
And now…
“See you later!” Qi Xiaotian called as the staff shot up.
Wukong waved as the kid disappeared, feeling a smile form at the following laughter. Soon enough, he was alone. He headed into the cottage to go watch TV and maybe make food that wasn’t hair.
He didn’t notice a single flower petal, fluttering away from his head.
7.
So this was going awful.
Wukong wasn’t sure why he had agreed to this. Red Son claimed he ‘needed to know that there were other options and he wasn’t limited to the unhealthy relationship with Macaque’. Okay. He could get that. But he had no idea who the kids were going to set him up with until he had entered the almost-empty restaurant and found Tang and Pigsy waiting.
And then an awkward silence had promptly formed.
Tang looked like he wanted to ask several questions and was about to burst. Pigsy kept glaring. And Wukong came to the realization that he probably did not know how to socially interact anymore. He found himself fiddling with the paper wrap his napkin came with, slowly tearing it.
This was going horrible.
At least it sounded like the waiter was approaching-
That wasn't their waiter.
Pigsy, taking a sip of his water, looked on the verge of doing a spit take. Xiaojiao, wearing a horrible fake mustache, smiled awkwardly. "Uh. Hello. Can I take your order?" She had lowered her voice at least.
Before Wukong or Pigsy could say something, anything, there was a bright "Yes please!" Tang smiled up at Xiaojiao, showing no signs of questioning this at all.
Eventually, Xiaojiao walked away with a notepad of orders. "You...you know that was Xiaojiao, right?" Wukong said.
"Yeah! What was that all about!" Pigsy seemed to always be in a state of anger, guessing by the blustering way he said it.
Tang shrugged. "I'm hungry and something's clearly going on with the kids. So I think it's best to eat and pretend we didn't see Xiaotian tackle someone and Red attacking with a frying pan."
"Wait-"
"What?" Wukong turned in his seat in time to see Xiaotian, Red, and Xiaojiao duck out of sight in the kitchen doors. He turned back to see Tang grin.
"So, which embarrassing Xiaotian story should I share first?"
8.
It was unfair.
It was so unfair.
Sun Wukong glared at his successor and the utter traitor that was his monk. "You know this isn't a team game, right?"
"It becomes a team game when you learn every way to cheat and you want your son to actually have a chance to win." Tripitaka said, hanging Xiaotian a card. He didn't seem to notice the youth's gape at him.
Wukong was more focused on the entirely true accusation. "Wha- Cheat?!" he protested anyway. "What I would never-!"
The monk rolled his eyes as the successor stifled his laughter in the cards he held.
9.
Sun Wukong never returned to the mountain.
10.
Sun Wukong did return to the mountain, hand in hand with a now immortal monk.
When Qi Xiaotian found him, he found a happy king, who's brothers visited and his monk safe and sound.
And maybe that was the happiest end for his tale.

I was listening to my music when the song 'Loyal Brave and True' came on. As I sang along I was reminded of Mei from @winterpower98 's Cursed AU. I had to write this down once it hit me.
War is not freedom.
Over my shoulder, I see a clearer view. All for my family, Reason I'm breathing, Everything to lose.
Mei hears her name and looks over her shoulder, pausing in her recent mechanical project. MK with Yin and Jin were walking into the room, a grin on their faces. Zan was hanging out on Jin's head and she thinks she sees Cherry behind them. "Hey, you three have been working on your projects all day. Come on! Let's go hit the arcade before getting some noodles at Pigsy's!"
Mei looks at Apple who was sitting nearby and Red Son who was standing further over, by his own project. After a moment, Mei puts her wrench down, grinning. "I'm down for a break. This was frustrating me anyways." She stands and stretches, Apple and Red following suit as well. MK only had a moment before Mei was clobbering him into a hug, leading to them both falling over and laughing.
Losing is easy-Winning takes bravery
I am a tiger's fool
Out in the open, No one to save me
The kindest of whispers are cruel
Mei lays her head on Red's shoulder. Today had been tough for her. Between convincing herself to tell Red what had happened to her with that Tiger Demon, telling him and the nightmare she had the night before about watching MK die, she was exhausted mentally and emotionally. It was so easy to give into the depression tied to this knowledge that was constantly pulling her down.
It was so hard to fight it off and not give in. She wanted to succumb so badly, but she had never been a quiter. No matter how bad her nightmares got, how heavy this knowledge was, how hopeless she felt about it all, Mei Long was not going to go down without a fight. It can try to drown her, but she was a dragon connected to the sea. Plus, she knew how to swim.
Should I ask myself in the water, What a warrior would do?
Tell me, underneath my armor-Am I loyal, brave and true?
Am I loyal, brave and true?
Mei looked at the newest demon of the week. Well, three demons. Two were massive, more so than Sandy and DBK. They each wielded a great sword and were pretty fast for being so big. (They definitely hadn't skipped leg day.)
The last one was much smaller and seemed to be the brains of the three with the other two as his bodyguards. He kept taunting them with his silver tongue, literally and figuratively. She tried to block out his words, but they seemed to pierce into her mind like a dagger.
Mei pauses next to MK, both catching their breath. She tries to think of what to do, tries to think what Macaque or Wukong would do in this situation. Her mind wanders back to a recent lesson Macaque had taught her at one of her Sparring Days. She smirks and tells MK to follow her lead, chucking her fear away for the time being. She had some demons to take down.
Cold is the morning, Warm is the dream
Chasing the answers 'Til I can't sleep
Will I be stronger Or will I be weak When you're not with me?
Mei lays in bed, hesitant to sleep while wanting nothing more than to go into the safety of dreamland. Today she had a serious reminder of her new found level of invulnerability and how fragile her best friend is. It was hard to believe she had been like that too as she had never felt fragile when it came to fighting.
Her mind replayed the events from earlier and all she could focus on was the fearful look MK had as a demon tried to step down on him. She had only just barely been fast enough to get him out from underneath and stood guard in front of him as he caught his breath, bearing her growing fangs at the demon.
Now that she was lying there, feeling the bandages wrapped around her arms and knowing MK had way more bandages than she did, did her walls come crumbling down. She didn't want to watch Mk grow old. She didn't want to watch him die. She didn't want to live a day without his sunshine personality and glowing smile. She didn't want to lose her best friend.
The one who introduced her to the rest of her odd little family and pushed her to be better. To do better. To give her a reason to fight tooth and nail (or was it fang and claw now?). Tears pricked her eyes and she now understood why Macaque, her dad and mentor had struggled to sleep for so long. She probably wasn't going to get much rest tonight either.
Who am I without my armor? Standing in my father's shoes.
Mei sat on the couch with MK as she watched who were essentially her fathers and grandfather banter back and forth. She leans back with a smile and looks at MK. MK had grown to be a strong young man in the short time he has been Monkie Kid. One day, he will be able to take Wukong's place as the Monkey King and step into his baba's shoes, (though let's be honest, he was going to outgrow what Wukong had quickly and become more than Wukong ever could.)
She looks back at her dad who had said something that caused her grandfather to laugh. She was truly a mixture of the two, a dragon warrior. And while she knew the road in front of her and MK was going to be rocky and challenging, Mei knew they would make it to the end and beyond.
All I know is that it's harder To be loyal, brave and true.

Who gave Zan her kerchief (the fabric around her neck)? I can see it being several people.
Wukong because she wants to be like him.
Mk/Mei as a way of surprising Wukong.
But most of all, I like the ideas that Macaque did. So where wears it not only because it is like her baba's, but it was a gift from her papa. And Wukong finds out when he is hanging out with Mami and Zan runs over with it on to excitedly show it off. When asked where she got it, she explains Macaque had given it to her.
Cue Wukong being shot in the heart at the cuteness of the gesture. Warm fuzzy feelings over that fact that his mate was starting to show signs of seeing Zan as his daughter as well. And this is the first time Zan calls Macaque her dad as well. More shots at Wukong's heart.
Meanwhile, Mac hears the conversation and is surprised, touched and conflicted to learn Zan sees him as her dad as well.
Macaque gave Zan that piece of clothing simply because she looked cold, and he didn't want to hear a fussy Wukong worring over the little monkey. That's the only reason!
But then Macaque overhears the conversation between Wukong and Zan and is conflicted

So, you know how I threw out the idea of Macaque healing so well after the fire due to Guanyin hearing Ma's prayers and granting that mercy? Well, I was listening to an audio of that one-shot and a thought hit me again but with extra force this time around.
Mac likely prayed as well but on Ma's behalf. The same mercy wasn't granted, but what if a different one was based on what had happened with the fight?
Ma's one regret at death was that she wouldn't be able to see her son and king live in their 'happily ever after'. But as Zan, she was able to witness and even take part in it happening to an extent.
What if the mercy granted wasn't Ma surviving/healing from her injuries, but of her being able to still be there for her family in important moments and in ways only she would be able to? (ie helping Bai He heal, helping the twins integrate, helping with Macaque's fulfillment of her dying wish). Granting her the ability to become the Bridge of Light her family desperately needed.
YOU REALLY DECIDED TO KILL ME TODAY DIDN'T YOU?

So is Ju Jing still alive or did he die shortly meeting Cherry? Please what happened next!
(Ling Ling's name has been changed to Ju Ling)
So, last time we left of one Ju Jing mistakenly calling Cherry "Ju Ling" before fainting.
When Ju Jing fell to the ground Rascal's cries after watching his baba collapse were heartbreaking for Cherry to hear. The kid shakes him, tries to wake him up, and calls for him "Baba! Baba!". Cherry couldn't just leave them like that So she does her best to comfort the child while calling Macaque. The shadow demon had already heard the kid's cry, being so close to Huaguo, but he came running only after he heard Cherry call for him in a bit of a panic.
When Macaque arrives, Cherry has had to take Kai into her arms to try to calm him down, while her dad lifts the passed-out demon. In Cherry's arms, Rascal was both too hot and too cold to the touch, and worry started to grow in her. She has had to tuck him into her shirt to keep him warm. The gesture also works in calming the little demon down a bit and he watches carefully while Macaque carries his baba. Inside Cherry's shirt, Rascal slowly dozes off while his tummy rumbles as they are traveling back to their house.
While Cherry tries her best to take care of Rascal, Macaque brings Ju Jing inside one of the spare rooms and calls for Wukong and Zan. The pink monkey checks on Ju Jing first since he's the one in the worst condition out of the two and she only checks on Rascal once she is sure Ju Jing was taken care of.
Seeing Cherry and mistaking her for Ju Ling gave Ju Jing quite the shock to his system and it put him out of commission for several days. But when he woke again he was met with Wukong's face, and in his still dazed state did not recognize the Monkey King. The oni started to worry when he looked around and didn't find his son, and Wukong had barely any time to say that the kid was also sick before Ju Jing sprinted of the bed and out of the room before he collapse again into the hallway. He desperately calls his son's name, panic attack incoming, until he sees his son in Cherry's arms, the black monkey had heard the demon's cry from all the way over in her room and she had quickly brought the kid to him.
Ju Jing calms down enough to be brought back to the room he was in, once he's back on the bed Zan scolds him for reopening his wounds and ruining her previous work. But the tall demon doesn't mind her, doesn't even hear what the monkey is saying, he just reaches out to hold his sleeping boy's hand while Cherry holds him. He can feel tears in his eyes and he tries to keep himself from staring at the black and red demon as well. Cherry notices that but doesn't say anything, it's not her place. After Zan is done patching up Ju Jing a second time, Cherry needs to leave the room because Rascal needs to be put in a more comfortable place than her arms and she also needs to help out in the house now that they have two more guests.
As she stands to leave, the injured demon softly says thank you to her.
After some more rest, Ju Jing finally realizes that the Monkey King was standing in the room and he tries to bow to Wukong. He gets stopped by both Wukong and Zan, the latter sending him a not-so-vailed threat of not reopening his wounds a third time. He still gets to apologize for his previous behavior and thanks him for rescuing him and his son.
Wukong, Mac, and Cherry still found out what had happened to the demon's family during the first week of their recovery, but any questions of how they had gotten away had to be held back for some time. Especially since they could easily send Ju Jing into a panic, when they tried to ask him anything the first time the taller demon started to panic thinking the demons who had attacked his family were back.
During the month Ju Jing and his son had to stay on FFM, Rascal kept calling Cherry "Mama" no matter how many times his dad told him that wasn't his mom because "She is mom! You can't see that Baba, you're still hurt, but it is her!"
It is incredibly heartbreaking to witness, especially when he pulls his kid close and is unable to stop the tears the taller oni sheds. And there isn't anything any of them can do either, Zan spends some time with him while she checks on his injuries and checks Rascal as well. When Ba and Beng were told what had happened, Beng had tried to give the man some form of comfort having gone through something similar. But it's still Cherry who spends the most time with Ju Jing because the oni gets agitated when Rascal isn't near him and the kids like to follow the black monkey around.

I had a thought about the Cursed AU.
When Zan was born, she was alone for several hours. Maybe up to 36 hours but that is really pushing it. The reason Wukong wasn't aware was he had been away on a journey for MK's sake. Meaning he had to have arrived home within the 24 hours after Zan was born. So, my question is how did Wukong find out Zan's mother was missing and start searching for her and her newborn?
While Wukong has exceptional hearing, Macaque's is even better. I can see them nearing home and Macaque picks up on her cries. Hearing her wails and no other sound that would indicate a parent or other monkey trying to calm her would peak his interest. To the point he mentions it to Wukong and they go searching for the cries. Mac finds her first, but Wukong is the one who responds first.
He would be going from a crazy and long journey, to caring for an infant in a span of a few hours. No wonder he is tired when MK next comes by
The thing is, before Wukong left FFM he did leave Mami in charge. But she's also one monkey, and a regular one at that, so when she noticed that one of the mothers-in-waiting was missing Wukong had already come back to the mountain.
When they came back from their little journey, Macaque and Wukong's relationship had been mended but it was still a recent thing. So when the Monkey King invited the other over to FFM that was Wukong's first step in making sure the same mistakes wouldn't be repeated.
So, knowing that a monkey was missing and that he could hear another one crying, Macaque put two and two together and lead Wukong towards the crying infant. Wukong did respond to her cry in an attempt to calm her down, but it wasn't until Zan was washed and cleaned that she stopped crying.
After that, Macaque leaves and doesn't come back except for one time to check on both Wukong and the baby monkey. The reason why he didn't stay on FFM with Wukong is that, as I mentioned earlier, their relationship had just come back to that of being friends (not lovers, not yet. That's something they will have to discuss), and now Wukong had to worry about a little monkey. So it would have been best if he stayed away from FFM and give Wukong some space.
Would Macaque's presence help the Monkey King, if anything as moral support? Maybe. But I doubt either of them had the emotional maturity in the moment to say that.
But at least Wukong had Mami to help him out, that doesn't mean he wasn't exhausted when MK visited him the next week

Imagine baby Zan curling her tail around Macaque’s forearm and squeezing her face to it like a cat does.
This was the first time Macaque properly held Zan, although it wasn’t exactly of his own volition, she was kinda just handed to him.
Emo monkey swears not to get attached but the moment she buried her face into his fur he was already wrapped around her little finger (not that he would let anyone else know though)
Macaque wanted nothing to do with this little monkey but Wukong just put her in his arms with no warning whatsoever, and to make sure she didn't fall the only thing he could do was hold her.
Cue Macaque completely stops processing anything the moment she buries her face into his chest. Wukong moves him to the couch because the monkey looked like he was about to pass out XD
