I just hit a huge milestone designing my giant pinball machine in Minecraft: the playfield is all laid out!
I'm calling the game Deep Field, and there's five primary objectives based on hitting different shots representing bands of the electromagnetic spectrum.
IR: rollover switches Visible light: pop bumpers UV: captive ball X-rays: Drop targets Gamma rays: spinner
Also, a kinetic sling disc to light locks for Pluto Multiball!

Pushing Up Daisies chapter 2 the lake
Summary: After having been brutally murdered by Blaine Debeers while investigating the Utopium trade you awoke six feet under. More like 60 feet under water.
TW: drowning, murder, language maybe, Gore
Word count: 1539
It was strange not having to breath in order to retain consciousness. The overwhelming cold of the lake water filled all your senses, you could barely blink past the murkey green of the water. There wasnt a hope of breathing in anything that wasnt liquid. You expected it to hurt. Pressure in your head or your lungs burning for oxygen. Other than the cold and crushing pressure this was almost peaceful.
It took you a moment to be able to realize you were even under water, and judging by the very faint light above it seemed that you were in deep. The longer you were aware the more you were able to regain your senses. You could barely see little fish swimming around you, probably having been trying to get a meal off your flesh.
There was a heavy weight on your legs and when you looked down you saw why. Your legs were tied together and at the end of them a rather large concrete block.
The pieces were falling together. Someone tried to kill you and dump the body in the lake. Before waking up in the water you couldnt remember much. White hair, red eyes. Gunshots.
Your hands moved against the water to your stomach to find no pain. There were holes. Tiny holes almost completely healed. Concerning of course but not nearly as concerning as the fact that you have been awake underwater for several minutes without any pain, any drawback. You felt almost nothing. Minus the cold and a growing sense of hunger.
'Gotta get out of this.' You thought almost lazily to yourself. You bent over, your moves sluggish in the water, and began unknotting the ties that were holding you down.
The moment your legs were free you kicked against the silt covered ground and shot towards the faint sun. When you broke the surface you tried to take a breath but you couldnt. Something in your lungs were blocking and it forced you into an uncontrollable coughing fit that forced what seemed like gallons of water from your lungs.
Once you were finally able to catch your breath you looked around, blinking the water from your eyes you could see shore in the distance. Even further the Space Needle. You were at lake Winters.
You swam to shore, the gnawing hunger growing with every moment that passed. While underwater it was easy to ignore but now it was almost overwhelming. Before too long you could feel the silt and mud under your feet and you were able to walk out of the lake. Dripping wet, cold and starving but you were walking none the less.
"Ma'am. Are you alright?" You could hear a voice in the distance. They had a soft timber. Warm and seemingly from a southern state. Likely a tourist.
You turned, barely able to make out the mans features. He wore a hat. Maybe green or a greenish brown. He had a greying beard that hid most of his facial features. He wore some sort of flannel under a fishing jacket.
You didnt care about what he looked like. Or that he smelled even more like fish than you. You just wanted to take off his hat and bash his skull until the juicy pink bits came out and thats what you did.
"I'm so hungry." You groaned as you stumbled forward. The man who had quickly closed the distance caught you in his arms as you fell forward, only the moment knocked him off his balance and he fell with you in his arms to the ground.
There was a grunt, this time from him, and you could smell the metallic scent from his head before the red leaked out and pooled around his head. Without skipping a beat you pulled him up by his shoulders and slammed him back down.
There was no screams. No begging for mercy. The only sound was the sickening crunch of skull against the ground and a slight slosh of brain matter leaking out.
Once the hole in the poor fella's head was large enough you dipped your fingers in and plucked out any and all solid you could find, plopping each piece of it in your mouth.
It wasnt what you call good. In fact the bitter metallic tell tale taste organ meat always left in your mouth had been enough to make you swear off organs in your youth but the satisfying way it satiated that growing hunger that moments ago was so overwhelming was enough to make it your new favorite flavor.
You ate until there was nothing left, and once you were finished you sat in beside the corpse of the poor fisherman. You had gone your entire career without ever killing anyone. The first person you ever have killed is this innocent man. It hurt. You felt horrible but you couldnt control it. Nobody saw. There was no witness, no evidence. He didnt deserve this. His family in whatever state he was from didnt deserve it. But there was nothing you could do to change the fact you killed him. But you could still protect yourself.
After your pity party you stood again, finding your senses much sharper and your balance back. You could think again and you remembered everything from before you woke up. Blaine Debeers scratched you, shot you, then tied you to center blocks and dumped you in the lake.
It was easy physically filling the fisherman's vest with rocks and dirty to weigh him down but emotionally it was one of the hardest things you had ever done. But you did it anyway and swam the body far enough that rouge swimmers wouldnt find it easily. Once it was safely at the bottom of the lake you decided to go home to figure out what to do next.
The small apartment in downtown Seattle wasnt the ideal home but it was your home nonetheless. You only used it to sleep, spending most of your time working. You were for lack of a better word, a workaholic. You only felt truly at home when on the job.
The apartment was plain, almost as plain as Blaine's office. A single keyring by the door beside an empty coat rack. There was a simple ugly plaid three person couch and a matching arm chair. Something you picked up from a thrift store when you realized you couldnt just have a lawn chair as your home decor. There was no tv. No radio. The only potential entertainment a person could get was from the bookshelf that was full of criminal law books and files from previous cases you had worked.
The kitchen was a little more luxurious with new matching silver appliances, a well loved kureg coffee machine, a shiny new microwave and your favorite, the air frier.
When you got to the door you found that someone had been here already. The wood was splintered around the deadbolt. There was a dent in the middle of the door, a sure sign that it had been kicked in.
Your hand instinctively went to where you normally kept your gun but of course there was nothing there. You were a murder victim. Usually the killer wont leave weapons on his victims bodies. Instead you pushed open the door and walked into the near empty apartment.
There was definitely a break in and whoever did it was looking for something. Almost everything was where you left if but the contents of your bookshelf were all over the room almost like a welcome homs confetti. And not among the papers was all the information you had collected on Blaine Debeers.
Once you figured out what was missing, which didnt take long at all, you remembered the events which led you to this discovery. Specifically the mixture of lake water and old blood, some yours some fishermans, that coated your body. You wanted, more than anything, a shower.
The bathroom was untouched, as you were sure the bed room was at well. You hadnt thought to hide your research. You were sure the first and only place they looked was the bookshelf and that was where you kept it so after you put yourself back together you would have to clean up but it would be the only thing you had to clean.
The bathroom, like the rest of the apartment, was plain. No little knick nacks. The soap dispenser was mint green with no designs or embellishes. The toothbrush holder the same with only one toothbrush even though it could hold  four. There was a towel rack with one, also mint colored, towel on it.
You walked into the bathroom and flipped on the light before gasping at the shocking image in the mirror. It was you but not the you that you remembered.
Your hair which had been (y/h/c) since you were born was snowy white. Lighter than Blaines but almost the same. Your skin had lost all pigment, leaving you looking almost ghostly. No blush. No color. And your eyes were now a light blue with purple shadowing that left you looking like you hadnt slept in weeks. The term zombie came to mind.

During the week 15 – 19 February, the preparatory work for WRC-23 agenda item 9.1b continued in ITU‑R Working Party 4C (WP4C). The WRC agenda item has initiated technical studies on coexistence between the radio navigation satellite service (RNSS) and the amateur services in the 23cm band. As usual, the IARU participated in the meeting and delivered key information on amateur activities in this important microwave band. This information is vital to ensure the amateur services are realistically represented in the studies as they move forward.
It remains vital that national amateur communities present their views on the importance of this band to their national regulators in a consolidated and consistent manner.
To assist with this the IARU-R1 is developing supporting material that member societies can refer to when addressing the topic with their national regulator.
The work on this topic will continue throughout the year and beyond both in ITU‑R and in the regional telecommunications organisations and the IARU is committed to ensure every organisation understands the amateur position on this important microwave band.

ARRL CEO David Minster, NA2AA, will keynote the QSO Today Virtual Ham Expo March 13 – 14 weekend. Minster’s talk — part of an 80+ speaker lineup — will begin at 2000 UTC (3 PM EST) on March 13. His appearance will highlight ARRL’s featured role at the Expo, which also will include “Ask The ARRL Lab.” ARRL is a QSO Today Virtual Ham Expo Partner.
Minster, who assumed the ARRL Headquarters leadership position last September, has launched major projects and assembled teams to foster innovation and individual skill development in radio technology and communications. In his keynote, Minster will share his enthusiasm for advancing amateur radio and highlight current ARRL initiatives to engage and inspire the current generation of hams. His presentation topics will include:
ARRL’s digital transformation, which promises to bring new value to ARRL members. An all-in digital approach will improve the way members access and engage with content, programs, and systems.
The ARRL Learning Center, a hub for members to discover the many facets of amateur radio and develop practical knowledge and skills.
Increasing video content, opening opportunities for amateur radio content creators and member-volunteers to learn, stay informed, and keep connected.
Improving training and tools to engage radio clubs, emergency communication volunteers, and students.
The ARRL Expo booth will feature “Ask the ARRL Lab,” where Lab staffers will answer questions live. Attendees can come into the booth lounge (featuring the Expo’s latest virtual meet-up and video technology), sit down at a virtual table, and ask ARRL Lab technical wizards for tips about projects or suggestions to address various station installations and problems. Attendees can also learn about Product Review equipment testing by the Lab, see a presentation on how the Lab can help hams with RFI problems, and tour W1AW — the Hiram Percy Maxim Memorial Station — virtually. ARRL booth staff will also point attendees to helpful resources from across membership benefits, services, and programs.
Representing the ARRL Lab will be Lab Manager Ed Hare, W1RFI; Test Engineer Bob Allison, WB1GCM; Senior Laboratory Engineer Zack Lau, W1VT; RFI Engineer Paul Cianciolo, W1VLF, and W1AW Station Manager Joe Carcia, NJ1Q. Between all of them, they have over 100 years of experience at ARRL Headquarters,
QSO Today Virtual Ham Expo Chairman Eric Guth, 4Z1UG, also announced four live group kit-building workshops. Workshop instructors will guide participants through building a variety of kits, which will be available for purchase and delivered prior to the Expo so attendees can build them at home. Attendees unable to participate during the live sessions can order and build kits by watching the workshop videos during the on-demand period that follows the Expo through April 12.
Workshop kits prices range from $15 to $30. Early-bird discount tickets and links to purchase kits can be found at the QSO Today Expo website. These workshops will include:
Building the NS-40 QRP Transmitter, a 14-component, 5 W transmitter for 7.030 MHz (with instructors David Cripe, NM0S, and Virginia Smith, NV5F).
The Learn-to-Solder Workshop will introduce the basic tools and techniques of building electronic kits. Participants will build a 20-meter transmitter kit (with instructors Rex Harper, W1REX, and Stephen Houser, N1SH).
Building the Cric-Key, a simple CW keyer with paddle, suitable for home and field use (with instructor Joe Eisenberg, K0NEB).
The Mini-Sudden Receiver, a pocket-and-mint-tin friendly direct-conversion 20-meter receiver (with instructors Rex Harper, W1REX, and Stephen Houser, N1SH).

Many thanks to SWLing Post contributor, Kevin, who writes: I often see people on the side of the road at intersections holding signs, “homeless, can you help”, that sort of thing. Like a lot of people I used to ignore them. A few years ago I decided that I wanted to help so I looked […]

FIVE SONGS
Tumblr media
list five songs associated with your muse and its meaning to them as a character, or to you as the writer. this can be applied in-character or out-of-character. it can go as deep as looking at the song’s real-world origins or meaning along with the themes it carries to the muses’ story, values, or experiences, or as simple as if your muse would listen to this kind of music, or even if you just listen to these pieces for inspiration.
TAGGED BY: @dansiere, who did such a good detailed job they even included an “honorable mentions list” ? i am embarrassed to type mine out now TAGGING: @blossomingbeelzebug @zhrets @dirtyfilthysunshine @prcphesise @hyakiru @foxcharmed
01. kaun komsott - ros sereysothea
this song actually lyrically has absolutely nothing to do with ziggy !!!!  kaun komsott /  កូនកំសត់ actually just means “poor/pitiful child” it’s just a khmer dub of a song from a taiwanese movie lol but i feel like this is the kind of music he would listen to that made him fall in love with, like ... humanity, as dumb as that sounds. it’s time period appropriate (late 60s/early to mid 70s), the song is really good and it’s SO emotional.  i could see him sitting in the apartment of his bandmates after being “found” and they teach him how to use the record player and he sits there going through each and every record they have and listening to this and its like the fucking scene in ratatootie where the goddamn rat can visualize tastes as colors but he would be so enamored with the song he would see it in colors or something i dunno.  something has definitely fucking happened to my brain because ever since nat and alex and i rewatched ratatootie we keep referencing it for our characters. anyways i ended up using an instrumental of kaun komsott in the final film i made as the song that plays during the end.  so this song just also means a lot to me because it’s part of how i made this character and the film/story i animated to go along with him, i am sure you are all absolutely sick of hearing me talk about it <3
02. who can i be now - daveed booweyywywy now you found me, now can I be real?  can I be real? if it’s all a vast creation / putting on a face that’s new someone has to see / a role for him and me someone might as well be you
one of z’s most obvious character motifs is figuring out self identity through adopting different guises.  he markets himself as being so overly confident and almost arrogantly certain of himself -- rock god space idol whatever -- as his own way of learning who he thinks he might be underneath it all.  i think at first it started off a little innocuous, a ‘ fake it till u make it ’ thing at the least and maybe more obviously a ‘ im not a human so i have to pretend to be someone else ’ deal, but over time it became almost all consuming and just obliterated all his previously held sense of self in favor of some weirdly demented version of who he wanted to be.  683 starts off with the same core personality traits as ziggy: maybe he’s a little vain, a little selfish, but he’s very interested in creativity/self-expression and he wants to be thought of as a unique individual and appreciated for his differences.  but the difference is that 683 isnt an arrogant asshole who has no regard for other people in the slightest.  so yeah ... who can u be now ... is it worth it to adopt a different guise or should he go through the effort of figuring out what parts of his personality were corroded by human influence and what parts are genuinely him?  my big endgame thoughts for his story would be that he eventually just decides to retire from the public eye and fucks off entirely.  this would be over the course of a long long long time -- maybe he has a good 20 yr run in the industry -- but there are some things about him he has to deal with (mental health issues, drug addiction, also the fact that you’re a freaky alien creature who doesnt age like a human so you’re physically like 46 and you still look like you’re 25?) so he inevitably decides he doesnt need the horrible pressure of fame and he ought to just live his life for himself.  i think this would be a nice final song for him to sing/perform -- then he goes into the dressing room and cuts his hair and just vanishes. bye.
03. sunny afternoon - the kinks Help me, help me, help me sail away Well give me two good reasons why I oughta stay 'Cause I love to live so pleasantly Live this life of luxury Lazing on a sunny afternoon
1. i think this would sound A LITTLE like the kind of music he would write/play albeit i feel like his would be more exciting and have more samplings of like laser noises or pewpewpew or weird spaceship sounds BUT.  its also pretty time period appropriate.  even in “modern” verses ziggy is inexplicably obsessed with the 1970s, he likes bell bottoms and thinks groovy patterns are neat and he owns too many lava lamps.  anywayz. 2. just the general idea of feeling unfulfilled with luxury -- even if ziggy enjoys his fame and wealth and the absolutely insane amount of pussy/dick he gets at some level he is still cognizantly aware of how weirdly empty he feels.  he ditched atomina and came here because he felt unfulfilled and bored and unwanted.  now he feels wanted (clearly, everyone loves him) and he feels entertained (earth is So Good at fun distractions) but his fulfillment still isnt quite there.  he’s getting there -- but in exchange of being able to live this life of fame, he’s had to kind of change everything about himself and live this almost caricature version of himself, and he knows he cant keep it up forever.  the luxury will run out one day and he’ll be a washup and no one cares about celebrities once they stop being hip.  it is literally only a matter of time before ziggy has to find out who he is because no one can be a “rockstar” forever.
04. i hate jimmy page - mindless self indulgence SUCKAS CAN REACH OUT TOUCH ME EAT ME BITE DA FUTURE & FUCK DA PAST  I'm lower than most animals and fear what might be weird and all those voices in my head have every right to be there i ain't a girl just cause i rock the boat i ain't a boy just cause i rock your world
i mean he does hate jimmy page but that’s beside the point. its just a good song about being a crazy rockstar and has the same Craziness that i feel like accompanies his character ... just go listen to it you will understand. there is nothing to explain here.  even the lyric “ill show u how official midgets jack me off” like just accept it. it’s whatever  but yeah i aint a girl i aint a boy ... i guess his gender (or lack thereof) never really comes up in rp but its still an important part of his character.  if any of u guys ever call him a man in prose again ill kick ur ass.  gender is like an accessory to him and he just takes whatever aspects of masculinity/femininity he prefers and discards everything else.  to him he’s just as much a “man” or a “woman” as he is a “human” which is to say he isnt, at all, and he just pretends to be because he feels obligated to.  also ziggy’s brain kind of sounds like this...just Noises.  his brain sounds like a microwave that’s been going off for 26 years.  i think his brain is a single uncooked pinto bean rolled in glitter that’s been left in a box with a cobweb
05. ghostride - crumb daydreaming I stay in the backseat / the slow beat rocks me back to sleep keeps me on automatic  press my face up close against the glass i see the people when they pass they move so automatic you wake up when I go down / the radio reminds me I'm alive we've been hearing it all night
i care more about 683 on atomina than i do about ziggy on earth sometimes (BUT I CARE THEM BOTH. DO U?) so ... 683 feeling aimless and drifting but trying to find purpose through passion, a person, some sort of concrete meaning -- going through the motions of life makes him feel empty he spends almost every day going through the same toil while feeling guilty or like a burden and also feeling like he’s ultimately nothing more than a replaceable cog in a machine. his species had a near extinction = bottleneck which made them so genetically similar they’re almost clones of each other.  no one ever seems to do anything wrong except him, he finds no joy or fulfillment in anything at all.  all he ever wanted (which isnt a selfish desire at all) was to feel purpose, or feel wanted, or appreciated. inevitably he leaves because of his own imagination -- he yearns for something More, and he doesn’t know What, so he figured he ought to at least Try instead of waste his life away. also atomina is supposed to sound like “automatic.”  do NOT make fun of my bad scifi.  i am trying to mimic the way 1970s scifi is endearingly cheesy.  come here.  i just want to touch you with this knife.  gently tho it wont go inside of you. bro you are bleeding. bro we are bleeding and i keep putting the knife in your soft parts.

I believe it's consistent with the state that today, at any rate in the Western World people can deflect the peril of a characteristic fiasco. In New Zealand, there is prepared staff to screen dangers identified with seismic tremors, volcanic ejections, tidal wave, flames, and floods. There are state-subsidized associations with staff prepared to oversee fiascoes amid the catastrophe occasions to forestall damage and death toll as a first need, including the two pets and ranch creatures where conceivable.
Flame and flood counteractive action can be taken to keep away from or limit disastrous scale occasions by forward getting ready for precedents with the arrangement of stopbanks, fire breaks and limitations on lodging advancements in flood inclined territories. Great building structure and development of water channels, funnels, extensions, dams, and spillways that can withstand 1 of every 100 to multi-year occasions are ordinarily used to keep away from costly and fatal fiascoes.
Large seismic tremors are in their very own class and can't be forestalled or time of occasion anticipated. In New Zealand, a > 8 size is expected at any point in the near future. see Alpine Fault shake: It will 'probably occur in the lifetime of numerous Kiwis' This could conceivably quickly kill 10's of thousands of individuals and wreck a huge number of structures and other framework including streets, spans, emergency clinics, power supplies which are by law required to fulfill tremor guidelines, but since of their age, or kind of development, particularly multistory might be not able to withstand the powers and ground developments of the real shudder and consequential convulsions. The season of the day will matter for the loss of life.

NZ has dynamic volcanic zones, and torpid volcanoes that could emit, however for these, a few and most sufficiently likely cautioning can be given to individuals to clear. For deciding the volcanic emission dangers researchers utilize remote computerized sensors of temperatures and ground shaking, in addition to examining, site visits and examination to build up ordinary examples and all the more intently screen uncommon movement, to offer admonitions to the open when dangers are expanded.
A substantial piece of forestalling fiasco is open attention to dangers, financing to distinguish, evaluate and deal with these dangers, not leaving things to risk as numbness isn't happy when these occasions happen.

"Gravy Ladles and Coffee Pots”
The kids gathered around the brand-new Radar Range, watching in open-mouthed astonishment as the bacon sizzled and crackled inside. “Wow, that’s really cool!”   Magic was made in the double-wide that day, and Kathy couldn’t be more proud as she held court with these young people completely in awe of this technological breakthrough.
I was forever envious of my cousins. They always got the cool shit before we did, and the microwave oven was the latest in a long list, borne from a lifelong sibling rivalry between my father and his sister.
My attention to this competition started the day Aunt Kathy called to ask for our help unloading a snowmobile she just bought from some guy on the west side. The ad said “Divorce Forces Sale” and Kathy pounced on the opportunity with lightning-fast dexterity – the rotary dial on the pink princess phone practically melting as she called to inquire.  An hour later she had her hands on the handlebars of what would become a big surprise birthday present for her husband.
Earlier - just that week - my dad had mentioned he was considering buying a snowmobile. He had to bite his tongue after she jumped-the-gun and got one first.
“It’s an Arctic Cat Panther,” yelled Aunt Kathy as she backed the pickup behind the trailer where they’d offload the sled.  It would be hidden under a tarp by the woodpile before being presented in a big reveal, a minute or so after the candles were blown out.
“I heard the Polaris is better,” Red said bursting with envy as a Salem Menthol cigarette bobbed from his mouth in the chilly Montana breeze.
Not more than a month later, he found a used 1969 Polaris Charger in the Tribune classifieds.  The guy wanted $350 but dad was able to “Jew him down” to $300.  The Polaris had a 372 which was technically a bigger engine than the Arctic Cat, and it had electric start – details that didn’t go unmentioned when I called the cousins to tell them “we got one now too.”
And so the race was on. Kathy would be the first to get the next new thing, then Red would follow-up with his take and brand preference on whichever widget, then Kathy would get a newer/bigger/better/faster, and the cycle would continue until the next new thing entered their collective consumer attention purview.
When Kathy replaced her old-school West Bend percolator with a Mr. Coffee, Red had to one-up his sister with a shiny new Norelco Dial-a-Brew he found on sale at Montgomery Ward. The sleek black and brushed aluminum look was super fancy and at least ten years before its time, and Red was really proud of his find – at least for a couple months.  Then Kathy got a new Bunn Pour-O-Matic, the home version of the commercial coffee maker used in restaurants like 4B’s and Big Boy.  How dare she jump to commercial grade!  This was war.
The next visit to Aunt Kathy’s was yet another shameless showcase where the new hot air popcorn popper was ceremoniously demonstrated.  It was placed on the Formica counter next to the new Presto Fry Baby, which had been the focus of last week’s appliance parade.  This time grandma and grandpa joined the parents and us kids for the exhibition - a dozen people watching with anxious anticipation as this incredible device that sounded like a vacuum cleaner started spewing hot popcorn into a ceramic bowl.  “I’ll be god damned, look at that” said Grandpa as he took a sip of Schmidt from a can in one hand and a drag of a Winston from the other.
Over the years there were groovy gravy ladles, meat tenderizer mallets, toaster ovens, ice cream makers, air pots, crock pots and fondue pots – not to mention multiple knife sets, pimped by slippery salesmen at the State Fair and procured under pressure.
But nothing caused more commotion than “that goddamned KitchenAid mixer”. This thing had a stainless steel bowl and was two feet tall.  It was astronomically expensive – costing far more than a house payment at the time.
It had a gear shift on the side with a single giant black Bakelite knob.  It was bullet proof and built like a tank.  Although it was a warmer, friendlier version of a mixer one might see kneading dough at Eddy’s Bakery or in the galley of a battleship, I feared the power might go out on the whole block when this behemoth was activated.
Kathy called a family press conference to celebrate its arrival with all the fanfare usually saved for the maiden voyage of a cruise ship. She had pre-ordered this thing and had to wait six agonizing weeks because she wanted hers in a color to more closely match the Harvest Gold of the oven and refrigerator. The appliances, furniture, carpeting and draperies in that Fleetwood mobile home came as a package deal, and matching the color of this added appliance was important in keeping with the designer aesthetic.
I don’t remember if anything got mixed or cooked or stirred while at the KitchenAid christening, but there was certainly something stirring on the way home as we drove over the 10th Street Bridge. We’d left the scene with our heads bowed - it was embarrassing for my mother to witness this charade of superiority.  Even “Old Lady Pete” from the trailer park across the way was there to watch as Kathy showcased her appliance prowess, and Betty would have to settle for an inferior cheap plastic hand-held thing from K-mart.  Why wouldn’t Red make the necessary sacrifices to buy a new KitchenAid for his wife?  This just might have been the beginning of the end of their marriage.

Red had been a radio operator in the Army and knew Morse code.  Ever since getting out of the service in the sixties he dreamed of having his own amateur radio transmitter to communicate with like-minded hobbyists. These were the techno-geeks of their time, and speaking over the air to some other enthusiast halfway across the planet (or even within the state of Montana) was a thrill that “ham” radio operators shared decades before cell phones and the internet made communication cheap and effortless.
Red yakked for years about getting himself a ham radio of his own, but the costs were just too high. Being fiscally conservative, raising his young son and supporting his wife on a single salary as a blue-collar glass guy, he figured splurging on such a luxury was selfish and excessive.  “Boy, someday, I’d like to get one of those VHF units,” practically drooling as he fingered through the back pages of Popular Science magazine.
The temptation to talk was overwhelming, and “someday” got a whole lot closer when the “Citizens Band” phenomenon of the mid-1970s took the country by storm. Since CB radios were far cheaper than Ham units, a communications compromise was possible: Red could satisfy his desire to chit-chat with strangers using a CB.  As seen on TV shows like The Dukes of Hazzard, and in movies like Smokey and the Bandit and Convoy at the Twilight Cinema, CB radios were suddenly everywhere…even Betty Ford, wife of then President Gerald Ford, had a CB “handle” - she was the nation’s “First Mama.”
But the clock was ticking if Red was to get his hands on one of these before his sister beat him to the punch.
“Don’t say anything…but god dammit we’re going to get something before they do” as Red used the basement phone to call his secret army of friends who’d help him find a used CB radio.  Come hell or high water he’d get one of these things in-hand before the weekend was over.
By the third dial he found some fellow glass guy friend who knew a guy who knew a guy who had one for sale.
The General Radiotelephone VS-4 was an old school commercial transceiver with three big black knobs, two switches and five channels. I didn’t know what “VS” meant…maybe “Very Serious”?  If you didn’t like the channel selection, you could change them by switching out the crystals you could buy at Radio Shack.  At $35 bucks, the price was right, and there was sufficient space under the dashboard of the 1966 Ford pickup where it would find its new home.
We were so proud to be the first family on the block with a CB radio.  So what if it was practically the size of a cinder block and the weight of an anvil?  So what if it stunk like the furnace when lit the first time after being off for the summer?
Sure, it was old and heavy and hot and used tubes, but it was ours.  And goddammit, we got ourselves a CB radio before Kathy did.  I couldn’t wait to call the cousins with this news.  Neener neener.
This whole surprise did not sit well with Aunt Kathy.  She had been ambushed, and retaliated the next week by purchasing a brand new 23-channel Midland – the brand preferred by truckers and clearly the “industry standard.”   Of course, her true intentions were camouflaged by labeling it a “gift” for Uncle Lee.
In the construction community, my father and my uncle were pillars. Dad worked in a shop and on construction sites building glass store-fronts.  My uncle was a Heavy Equipment Operator and drove a road grader in the summer months.
“Clothes don’t make the man,” my father would say.
But what he didn’t mention was that the CB radio and truck just might.
Having a brand new Midland with an eight-foot stainless steel whip antenna on a shiny new Chevy Pickup clearly put my uncle ahead of the curve, commanding considerable respect from the other members of the metal Thermos lunchbox crowd.
Even though Red’s old General Radiotelephone was hot-wired and had more than four times the power output of the new Midland, the average passer-by looking through the window of that old truck wouldn’t know that.   “You could hear that thing from King’s Hill all the way to Great Falls” he would say.  But so what…that truth didn’t matter from the curb.  So to restore dignity and improve the dashboard appeal of his aging 1966 Ford, Red used a big chunk of his next paycheck to buy a spanking new 23-channel Sharp model with a red LED digital readout.  This module was modern and pretty.  A digital readout was so much more impressive than the single-knob back-lit dial of the Midland.  Red’s rationale: “If we can’t have a new truck, well god dammit, we’ll at least have a new CB radio.”  These were simple priorities of the day.
If Kathy could hold court with the kids by showing off a new microwave, Red could do the same across the river using his new CB radio as a centerpiece.  It was so impressive the neighbor kids would come from six blocks away to see it.  Part of the experience included listening to the soundtrack from the movie Saturday Night Fever via an 8-track tape deck mounted in a home-made headliner installed in the ceiling.
In this headliner were switches – many switches – with amber and red and green indicator lights.  One controlled the fog lights which beamed so much candlepower you could practically use them to fry chicken from twenty paces.
And there was a dimmer switch for reading lights like those that shine down from overhead bins in airplanes.  Sure the truck was old, but it had character.
And it was ballsy….powered by a bored-out 390 V8 with a 10:1 compression ratio, fed by a gas-guzzling Holley 750 double-pumper 4-barrel carburetor. It had dual glass-pack mufflers and a shiny new maroon metallic paint job and cool chrome wheels with extra-wide tires.  Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks?
But no matter what we did to that truck, it was still old. And I was forever envious of Uncle Lee’s new Chevys.
Coca Cola Cowboy
The latest in the parade of pickups was a brand spankin’ new 1979 Chevrolet K20 Silverado 4x4, powered by a 7.4 litre 454 cubic inch high-torque V8.  It was a three-quarter ton Camper Special, which meant it had upgraded suspension to support the extra weight of a slide-in camper.
This truck was absolutely stunning.
Outside was Midnight Black metallic, and the inside was appointed with rich plush carpeting and a cushy velvety bench seat so lavish it put our living room sofa to shame. With brushed aluminum accents, the instrument panel included a tachometer to measure engine speed and a gauge for oil pressure.
At the time, factory air conditioning, power steering and power brakes were nice-to-have expensive options in a pickup truck.  But tilt steering, electric windows and power door locks were luxuries usually saved for cars like Cadillacs.
This truck had all of that and more – included in the top-of-the-line interior package.  This was the pinnacle of pickups, and Uncle Lee was a god for owning it.
While most people opted for an automatic transmission, this truck had a manly 4-speed manual with a chrome stick shift – a rare combination of options requiring a special order, which I didn’t even know was a possibility.  When we bought our truck we picked what we could afford from the used lot.  Uncle Lee ordered his new from the factory.  There was even talk of going to see it being built – a trip most blue-collar construction dudes would consider a once-in-a-lifetime, bucket list, trip to mecca sort of thing.
My dad always made excuses for why we didn’t have newer vehicles.  “We’re saving for a place in the mountains” was the one used most. But I knew it bugged him when I’d fawn over the new car and truck combo Kathy and Lee would bring back from City Chevrolet every two years.
I recall a particular moment of sweet satisfaction for Red when we were going on a camping trip – something we did almost every weekend in the summers. Both families had loaded their respective RVs with all the Coleman stuff, Jiffy Pop and Shasta.  I remember listening to Eddie Rabbitt’s “Two Dollars in the Jukebox” on 13-10, KEIN, as we headed out for a “Weekend in the West.”
Kathy, Lee and the kids got a good hour-long head start since we needed to stop for propane.  It was a bit of a surprise, though, when we caught-up to them on the Wolf Creek cut-off, less than 30 minutes or so after we got on the road.
Uncle Lee had the pedal to the metal trying to milk every last bit of horsepower from that 7.4 Litre 454 high-torque V8.  It was all he could do to get it to 50 mph as the shiny new Chevy with the Kit overhead camper struggled with the steepness of that mountain, the altitude, and headwinds so strong they’d most certainly slow a semi.
Out of nowhere came the old Ford truck with its cargo box overflowing with motorcycles and camping gear, pulling an 18-foot travel trailer, and blaring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John’s Greased Lightnin from the 8-track overhead.  “Look at that, brand new truck – so much for that 454 - ha!”  We’d be passing them at the first possible opportunity.
As the old grey mare roared by doing 70 mph, Red looked right into Kathy’s eyes with a piercing look that said “Fuck you sister” as he flipped ‘em the finger, blaring the dual air-horns for another quarter mile or so until we hit the crest of the hill.
I gained a lot of respect for my elders that day, mechanical or otherwise.
A few weeks later, my cousin and I talked in the alley as we waited for our parents to say their goodbyes after a regular family visit.  Even though I was thirteen I realized this was sibling rivalry shit was starting to get silly.
“When are you going to get a new truck?” asked my cousin.
“When are you going to get a real house?” I snapped.
Our house, although practically a century old, was built with studs and plaster.
So what if they had new vehicles every two years, a more expensive microwave and (coming the next week) a bigger, better CB radio with more channels and knobs than ours.
They lived in a trailer.
There, that would settle that.

Marine Radar Market - Recent Trends, Development,Growth & Forecast 2017-2025
Global Marine Radar Market: Snapshot
Marine radar refers to an equipment which is one of the most used on the ship’s bridge by officer of watch (OOW) to carry out a safe navigational watch. Radar is a mandatory aid for navigation, in order to identify and track other ships and land obstacles.
Marine radar are classified as x-band with 10 GHz frequency or S-band with 3 GHz frequency. X-band radar being of higher frequency is used for sharper images and better resolution, whereas S-band radar is used in rain or fog and for identification and tracking.

Marine radar are compulsory as per International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea. They are electronic navigation devices that use a rotating antenna to transmit a narrow beam of microwaves on the surface of the water that surrounds the ship extending to the horizon. These instruments help detect object by microwaves reflected from them, and display an image of the ship’s surroundings on a screen.
Marine radar is of importance for safety at sea and at the shore. The OOW of a vessel need to guide captains to be able to navigate when there is no visibility, or to be able to maneuver within feet in extreme conditions. In marine settings, radars are rarely used alone. In commercial vessels, they are integrated in an array of marine instruments including chart plotters, two-way marine radio, sonar, satellite navigation receivers such as Global Positioning System, and emergency locators.
The integration of radar with other marine instruments is important at it is cumbersome to look at a few display screens. Therefore, displays can often cover plot charters, sonar, and radar into a single system. With digital frameworks, in the last years, marine instruments have advanced greatly. For example, the new marine instruments have 3D displays that enable navigators to view above, below, and all around the ship.

Global Marine Radar Market: Overview
A marine RADAR is a ranging and detection system that picks up signals from objects several hundred feet or several miles away from your boat. The RADAR system sends out a signal in the form of a sound wave. This pulse is sent out from the RADAR dish on top of your boat. When the signal is reflected by an object, the RADAR computer determines how far away it is and where it is located. A radio wave is transmitted and received back by the scanner.
The time is calculated between transmission and receiving back this wave. The speed of the radio wave is known and thus the receiver unit calculates the distance of the target. After processing, it displays this information on the display screen. The rotating scanner also calculates the bearing of the target and displays on the radar screen. It determines the spread, angle, and speed of the object falling within its radius. It is also used to forecast and detect the spacecraft, aircraft, missiles, weather, and other form of vehicles.
The report provides and analysis of the market competition that could be experienced by players. The report discusses possible market entry strategies for new participants and business paths that existing players could take. The report is an all-encompassing study of the marine radar industry, its drivers, challenges, and key trends that the market is likely to witness.
Global Marine Radar Market: Key Trends
RADAR was initially developed for defense and military purposes but with upcoming technologies and innovation, it finds its application in air traffic control, astronomy, air-defense system, anti-missiles systems, marine, aircraft anti-collision system, meteorological monitoring, and more.
The main factor that is driving the marine radar market is the increasing demand for the weapon guidance and surveillance. The purchasing power of the people has increased which has, in turn, increased the marine tourism thus increasing the demand for pleasure boats and luxury boats which need to be installed with the marine radars. This factor has significantly increased the demand of marine radars in the global market. The government is also supporting by making it mandatory the installation of marine radars in the ships and boats so that marine collision are avoided.
Advanced RADAR systems are used for digital signal processing and are helpful to extract useful information from high noise level. Introduction of new types of RADAR system has enhanced the development in technology, thus helping countries when it comes to security issues. Major factors that are driving the global RADAR market are increase in demand for the RADAR system and investment in defense due to increase in security related issues. However, adverse climatic condition, which sometimes results in malfunctioning of the RADAR system restricts the market growth.

Travel Trailer or Motorhome? So you entered your local RV dealership with a crystal clear picture in your mind of what your first motorhome would look like. Two hours later, however, you walked out confused, trying to sort out all the new terms you've heard. What's the difference between a Class A motorhome and a Class C? And how are they different from travel trailers? More importantly, which one is best for you? This article has been designed to break down each type of RV to help you determine which best fits your lifestyle. Class A Imagine your house. Now put a steering wheel in it. You're looking at a Class A motorhome. Class A motorhomes are built on a bus chassis, and therefore can be more than 40 feet long, include any imaginable amenity, and tow a small car, or a "toad," behind them. Once the motorhome is parked, the driver and passenger seats can be turned around and used for living room furniture. Class A motorhomes are the largest and therefore most expensive RV options.   Class B Because Class B motorhomes are built on a van chassis, they are extremely easy to handle on the road. While Class Bs are the shortest motorhomes on the road, they feature a raised roof for larger living quarters and get great gas mileage. Class C Class C motorhomes are built on a truck chassis. These motorhomes feature an extra sleeping area over the driver's cab, making Class Cs attractive for large families. If you are looking for a less-expensive motorhome with the ability to tow a boat or car, a Class C may be the best fit for you.   Fifth Wheel/Travel Trailer A fifth wheel and a travel trailer similar, yet serve two different types of audiences. Fifth wheels hitch in the bed of a truck and can be as large and luxurious as a traditional motorhome. Travel trailers, on the other hand, can be towed by trucks, vans or sometimes even heavy cars. Fifth wheels are generally more expensive than travel trailers but more affordable than motorhomes. For families who already own a large truck or are looking for more luxurious travel accommodations, a fifth wheel may work better. For families who require less living space or want to use their own car or van for travel and storage, on the other hand, a travel trailer may best fit their lifestyle.   Camper/Pop-up Trailers Pop ups and campers are smaller and cheaper than most other travel options. Pop up trailers can be towed flat, then expanded at a campsite. Campers are so small that they can be slid into the bed of a pickup truck. Both campers and pop-up trailers make excellent startup trailers for small families of one to three people who happen to be weekend warriors rather than full-time campers.   This article has been presented by RV World,  a Florida RV dealership with lots in both Nokomis and Lakeland.

It’s not the 1940s anymore
I’ve heard a lot of people talk about how the economy used to allow for a family to live off of a single income. This has been a topic brought up in the debate for higher minimum wage. But, is it still possible? Personally, I believe it is.
If we’re going to try to live financially like it’s the 40s, we have to change our entire lives to reflect the 40s. So, let’s time travel a bit here. If you’re in your late 20s to early 30s, you’re married with kids. It’s the 40s, so we’ll just assume the man of the house is going to work.
Controversial topic: Gender Roles...
The man is going to work to support his family and the woman is staying home to care for the children and take care of the house. Does the thought of this make you uncomfortable? That’s too bad, we’re in the 1940s now and that’s just the way it is.
What else will be different?
Next, we need to eliminate all of our modern luxuries. Your cell phone? Gone. Internet? Gone. Cable? Gone. Computer? Gone.
Basically, if you’re reading this right now, you own too much. Once those items are taken away, the electric bill also drops.
Oh, by the way, if you’re the wife in this scenario, at least you’l be free from distractions will doing your daily chores. Also, you won’t be going anywhere unless it’s within walking distance for you and the kids, because you don’t have a car.
That’s right, one car per house!
The average family has the family car. The family saves money for the car, and then pays for it in full once they can afford it. If they don’t have enough saved up, they take the buss. Or ride a bike. Or take a nice walk. Once you buy your new car, you do everything you can to keep it running forever. Also, the man of the house should know how to do most routine maintenance and light repairs himself. No need to pay someone else to do it for you.
More gender roles: The woman cooks
Going out to eat will be something that only ever happens on extremely special occasions. Just because it’s “Wing Wednesday” or whatever other gimmick a restaurant throws at you isn’t a good enough reason to go out. Your food is purchased as the local grocery store. And the meals are all made from scratch. No microwave. And just like that, your electric bill is going down again. It will go down even more when you wash your dishes by hand and not in the dishwasher.
So, what all is lowering that electric bill?
A lot more than you think. Other than everything already mentioned, you will only find one television set in your house. It will be in the family room. And the amount of time your family is sitting down to watch it will be minimal. I would say one to two hours a night is more than enough. Some nights, you might not watch at all. And to be completely realistic, you might not even have a TV, just a radio.
Also, in the summer months, you’ll cool down by opening your windows or taking a dip in a local pond or river. In the winter, your house will be heated by burning wood logs in the fireplace. this is where a lot of your electric savings will come from.
MATH TIME!
If you made the national minimum wage, you would make about $15,000 a year. But, you’re living like it’s the 40s, so you’ll probably work a factory job. With that average pay, you’ll be making about $25,000 annually.
First, let’s take out taxes. With federal tax removed, you are left with about $22,000. Take out your state and local taxes, it puts you at around $20,000.
The main expense is going to be your house. Odds are, you would get an FHA mortgage. Because you won’t have any other debts, you could get a $100,000 home with $3,500 down. Your mortgage would then be about $760 a month. With your income, you would have about $900 a month left over to go towards utilities and groceries.
On the high side, you will be paying about $200 monthly for your utilities. Leaving you with $700 every month. As far as groceries are concerned, expect about $300 monthly for your family assuming all meals are homemade. The remaining $400 would then go into your savings account. Out of that, you would also pay for clothes as needed, toiletries, and miscellaneous household items. If we budget $200 a month for that, you’ll still have $200 left over every month.
Now, let’s assume you actually shop around for a house. You can find a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom home for $50,000. If you put only $1,900 down, with an FHA loan, your monthly obligation drops to $385 a month. At that, you’d have $575 monthly that you could be putting into savings.
Oh, and you won’t have to buy many things for your children. They’ll pay for them on their own with their paper route jobs.
One last thing...
These home prices, cost of living, factory job pay, they’re all based off of the idea that you would be living somewhere in middle America. Results may vary. However, there isn’t, in my opinion, a minimum wage problem in this country. Our problem is our standards of living have grown too rapidly. If you focus on good relationships and a happy family, you’ll be okay. It’s when we start measuring success by materialistic possessions that we begin to struggle. Love each other, forgive each other, and be there for each other and life will be okay regardless of your financial situation.
