Jan Bartek - AncientPages.com - New scientific research has revealed a piece of tartan found in a peat bog in Glen Affric around forty years ago can be dated to circa 1500-1600 AD, making it the oldest known surviving specimen of true tartan in Scotland.
The Scottish Tartans Authority commissioned Dye Analysis and Radiocarbon testing on the woolen textile to prove its age.
Scotland's Oldest Tartan On Display For The First Time!
Glen Affric tartan - Scotland's oldest-known true tartan discovered by The Scottish Tartans Authority to go on display for the first time at V&A Dundee's Tartan exhibition.
Credit: Alan Richardson Pix-AR
The first investigation was dye analysis carried out by analytical scientists from National Museums Scotland. Using high-resolution digital microscopy, four colors were visually identified for dye analysis: green, brown, and possibly red and yellow.
The dye analysis confirmed the use of indigo/woad in the green but was inconclusive for the other colors, probably due to the dyestuff degradation state. However, no artificial or semi-synthetic dyestuffs were involved in making the tartan, which pointed to a date of pre-1750s.
Further clarification on the age of the tartan involved radiocarbon testing at the SUERC Radiocarbon Laboratory in East Kilbride. The process involved washing out all the peat staining, which would have otherwise contaminated the carbon content of the textile.
The Radiocarbon testing results identified a broad date range between 1500 and 1655 AD, with the period between 1500 and 1600 AD the most probable. This makes it the oldest-known piece of true tartan found in Scotland – the Falkirk ‘tartan,’ dating from the early third century AD, is actually a simpler check pattern woven using undyed yarns.
The Glen Affric tartan, which measures around 55cm by 43cm, is now on display for the first time at V&A Dundee’s Tartan exhibition.
by TaboolaSponsored Links
The piece will be the oldest exhibit among more than 300 objects. The exhibition examines tartan’s universal and enduring appeal through iconic and everyday examples of fashion, architecture, graphic and product design, photography, furniture, glass and ceramics, film, performance, and art.
“The testing process has taken nearly six months, but the effort was well worth it, and we are thrilled with the results!
In Scotland, surviving examples of old textiles are rare as the soil is not conducive to their survival. As the piece was buried in peat, meaning it had no exposure to air and was therefore preserved.
The tartan has several colors with multiple stripes of different sizes, and so it corresponds to what people would think of as a true tartan.
“Although we can theorize about the Glen Affric tartan, it’s important that we don’t construct history around it. Although Clan Chisholm controlled that area, we cannot attribute the tartan to them as we don’t know who owned it.
“The potential presence of red, a color that Gaels considered a status symbol, is interesting because of the more rustic nature of the cloth. This piece is not something you would associate with a king or someone of high status; it is more likely to be an outdoor working garment," Peter MacDonald, Head of Research and Collections at The Scottish Tartans Authorit said.

“The Glen Affric tartan is clearly a piece of national and historical significance. It is likely to date to the reign of James V, Mary Queen of Scots, or James VI/I. “There is no other known surviving piece of tartan from this period of this age. It's a remarkable discovery and deserves national attention and preservation. “It also deserves to be seen and we’re delighted that it is to be included in the Tartan exhibition at V&A Dundee,” John McLeish, Chair of The Scottish Tartans Authority, said.
“We knew The Scottish Tartans Authority had a tremendous archive of material and we initially approached them to ask if they knew of any examples of 'proto-tartans' that could be loaned to the exhibition.
I'm delighted the exhibition has encouraged further exploration into this plaid portion and very thankful for The Scottish Tartans Authority's backing and support in uncovering such a historic find.
To be able to exhibit the Glen Affric tartan is immensely important in understanding the textile traditions from which modern tartan derives, and I'm sure visitors will appreciate seeing this on public display for the very first time," James Wylie, curator at V&A Dundee said.
Tartan at V&A Dundee opens on Saturday, 1 April, until 14 January 2024.

Every time people try to raise awareness about food additives - soy, corn syrup, added sugars, artificial sweeteners, artificial preservatives, seed oils, artificial flavors, dyes, etc - SOMEONE pops up to say “____ is fine in moderation, this isn’t actually a big deal, a little won’t kill you.”
And technically, they’re right. Our bodies are great at filtering out what we don’t need - when we consume things in moderation.
The trouble is that in order to consume things in moderation, you have to actually know how much you’re consuming. And what “moderation” looks like for that particular ingredient.
Let’s take soy for example. Soy is fine in moderation. Soy beans, soy sauce, and tofu can be part of a healthy diet.
But right now, go check things in your pantry. Check your condiments, check your protein bars, check anything remotely processed. How many of those things have soy? How many did you expect to have soy?
When we have ingredients in foods that don’t belong there, we end up consuming way more of those ingredients than we need to.
Corn on the cob, steamed corn, cornbread, and corn tortillas aren’t bad for you. Having corn starch and/or corn syrup in nearly every food you eat is not necessarily a good thing.
My rule isn’t “only eat what you can pronounce.” There’s a lot of things I can pronounce that I still don’t want to eat. My rule is “what ingredients should be in this?”
Know what is in your food and what the healthy daily allowance is for those ingredients. Know what “moderation” looks like for you for different common additives. Eliminate unnecessary additives where you can so that they have less impact on you when you can’t.

I learned recently that Emma Frost is actually a natural brunette (instead of blonde). However, I also recently read "X-Men Phoenix Warsong" where the rest of Emma's thousand daughters are revealed. In their capsules, they are all shown to have blonde hair, and since Sublime probably didn't see the need to dye their hair then I assume it's their natural color. Since the Cuckoos have different hair than Emma as well as an improved diamond form, I'm wondering if they aren't purely clones. Could Sublime have included the DNA of one or more other mutants to enhance their powers? Could the Cuckoos have a "father?"
Yes, Emma is a natural brunette (although her mother Hazel and most of her siblings are blond, which is plot relevant for later) who was relentlessly Mean Girled by the popular blond girls at her private school. There's a whole fascinating sexual psychodrama about how the ideal form that Emma transformed herself through extensive plastic surgery and high-end cosmetology and fashion into is the avatar of her stock photo "bullies" that I'm not qualified to get into, but needless to say Connor Goldsmith has you covered on this.
Tumblr media
And yes, one of the many problematic elements of the creative decision to have the Stepford Cuckoos (hat tip again to Connor) be Emma's biological children is that they're all naturally blond identical quintuplets who all look like young Emmas, even though Emma's appearance is deliberately, consciously artificial and genetics does not work that way, Lamarck.
However, this is due in part to the fact that they are not technically clones of Emma - although they are clones of each other, created en masse originally in their thousands by the Weapon Plus program. That fact is potentially quite significant, because it is highly likely that the Cuckoos' genetic father chosen by Weapon Plus (out of some weird Lamarckian eugenic theory, because the Super-Soldier Serum does not work that way either) is none other than Steve Rogers (whose preserved DNA samples as part of Project Rebirth makes him also Weapon Zero), and who also happens to be blond with blue eyes.
I like this idea a lot, mostly for the comedy value of the whole Emma/Steve ship. The Cuckoos historically think that Cap is an old square (then again, they think anyone over thirty is old). But I do kind of love the thought of them trying to parent trap Emma and Steve together as a prank - only for Steve to become the most awkwardly well-meaning "dad who stepped up" ever. I think the Cuckoos would absolutely hate being dragged to Mets games, but they'd probably be really surprised when Cap takes them to MoMa the next weekend and demonstrates a frighteningly in-depth knowledge of art history and a surprising familiarity with queer NYC circa the 20s and 30s.

The Mac and Cheese Journey
Let me start out this post by giving a little history lesson about Kraft mac and cheese. Let me quote this article from CNN in 2016:
Kraft Changed Its Mac & Cheese Recipe and Nobody Noticed
by David Goldman   @DavidGoldmanCNN
March 8, 2016: 10:00 AM ET
Notice anything different about your mac & cheese lately?
No? Don't worry, nobody else did either.
Kraft Heinz removed artificial preservatives, flavors and dyes from its mac & cheese recipe in December. To keep its yellow-orange glow, Kraft swapped out artificial food colors, including yellow 5 and yellow 6, for natural spices like paprika, annatto and turmeric.
The new mac & cheese also doesn't use artificial preservatives. (It maintains the natural preservatives, however, including 720 mg of sodium per serving -- 1,710 mg per box, which is 72% of your daily recommended salt intake.)
The company has sold more than 50 million boxes of the new mac & cheese so far.
Kraft launched a marketing campaign Monday, starring former "Daily Show" and "Late Late Show" host Craig Kilborn. The company is calling it "the world's largest blind taste test."
"As we considered changing the ingredients of our classic Blue Box, we did so knowing we had to maintain our iconic look, taste and texture," said Greg Guidotti, Kraft Heinz's vice president of meals, in a statement. "We'd invite Americans to try our new recipe, but they most likely already have."
I'm sorry, I noticed. I noticed immediately when my noodles started taking more than 7 minutes to cook. Then, the mac acquired a smell to it that I can only describe as urine-esque. Then Kraft ripped my heart out, put turmeric on it to make it yellow, and fed it back to me. I don't eat mac and cheese to be healthy. I eat it because I like cheesey noodles and I'm too lazy or tired to cook something real. Give me the fake everything. Cancer mac, my beloved. So I now present to you, my journey to find a store brand mac and cheese that might taste like my sweet sweet mesothelioma powdered cheddar goodness. First, since it's been a couple of years, I decided to get Kraft one last chance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
5/10 Stars. Turmeric does not belong in mac and cheese. Still smells like urine. You broke my heart Fredo. (I wish this was Alfredo so I could make a better joke.)
Next is Kroger Brand Mac
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was definitely apprehensive as it is "all-natural" too. What's so natural about mac and cheese any way? The cheese is friggin' powder. 2/10 Stars - Noodles took nearly 10 minutes to cook and the mix smells so weird I thought I was going to die.
Next, because it was next to the Kroger brand, I said "What the hell - Cheetos Mac is going into the cart too."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
6/10 - It's better than Kraft and tastes like Kraft Easy Mac in 2005. But the noodles taste like hamburger helper noodles. The more you eat it, the more gross it gets. I felt sick afterward. Costs almost $4 a box.
I get the majority of my groceries at Food Lion, this store is sprinkled across the south and their store brand items are usually very very good.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
7/10 - Better than all the other ones so far - but mostly just Okay. The cheese has a red tint to it which is kind of off-putting. I wouldn't seek it out.
Finally, we have our winner:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
10/10 - Tastes like Kraft used to taste before they went cuckoo bananas and broke my heart. Publix, you are amazing. This only costs 99 cents. I've missed this taste so much in the last seven years, I've eaten about 3-4 boxes of the Publix brand in the past week.
Thank you for taking this journey with me.
I did the hard work so now you don't have to.

Moms Across America Tested New Children’s Cereal & Found Poisons Like Heavy Metals, Arsenic, Aluminum, Cadmium, 8 Different Pesticides (Some Known To Change Sex Hormones) & More
All this in 1 cereal box
Testing reveals ‘General Mills Trix Loaded Cereal’ is actually “loaded with heavy metals and pesticides” also contains “Artificial dyes, preservatives, chemicals” - We found arsenic and cadmium 200-400% higher than what the EPA allows in drinking water - We found aluminum levels to be 1,365% to 1,650% higher than what the EPA allows in drinking water - We found glyphosate levels 158 to 174 times higher than has been shown in animal studies to cause sex hormone changes and organ damage when animals ate 0.1 parts per billion of glyphosate for 2 years of the glyphosate herbicide, the the formulation. And we also found 8 different pesticides. One of them is an ingredient used in shampoo that kills lice, and the other one is a fungicide known to cause endocrine disruption and hormone disruption in humans and wildlife at very low levels. So, clearly, this is not a great way to start your day with toxic chemicals, and we call on General Mills to get to the source of why their cereal is so contaminated and to do things like test fertilizers because we think that's the source of the heavy metal contamination. This is a very serious issue because heavy metals can cause neurological damage and developmental disorders that can be lifelong. So this is very serious. We are in a national physical and mental health crisis in America, and we need manufacturers like General Mills who have the resources to actually do something about cleaning up their the food supply and the products that they offer.“

Print session - 09/04/24
In today's print session, we exposed our own screens and we experimented with procion dyes which allowed us to create vibrant designs on our fabrics. We first created our designs on tracing paper as you can't use normal paper when exposing the screens. For this task, I took inspiration from old photographs of my grandma. I used items like her clothing and the tattoo on her hand as inspiration. I created a few designs that used these elements to capture her essence and style. Then we cut the designs out and placed them onto the exposing machine we had to do this in a dark room with only artificial lighting as any natural lighting would ruin the exposure. Then we placed the screen on top of our designs and waited for the process to finish before washing the emulsion off. I left my screen to dry and I will be printing with it during the next session. I am excited to see the results and experiment with colour.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
During this session, we also printed with the plain screens. However instead of creating a stencil, we used procion dye directly onto the screen. This was fun and interesting as I had never tried this way of printing and it was very exciting and freeing. I painted onto two screens. I first painted a background using a mix of yellow and red and blending them together in various spots giving a tie-dye effect. After this, I created a beautiful floral pattern that was inspired by the floral arrangement presented at my grandmother's funeral. The vibrant colours and intricate details of the flowers caught my attention and it reminded me of her memory and I wanted to preserve the beauty of the flowers forever. I created the silhouette of the flowers and I am hoping to add linework on top to add further detail. I'm not sure how I will do this yet I may experiment with a range of techniques like sewing into it, printing or drawing. After letting the screens dry we started printing with them and we applied gum to rehydrate the dye so it would transfer the vivid colour onto the natural fabric as the dye doesn't work well with synthetic fabrics. The colours came out so vibrantly and they matched my reference so well. I also printed with the excess dye left on the screen onto paper to get a ghost print which came out well too. Overall I really enjoyed this session and I have learnt different techniques and processes involved with print that I would like to use further into this project.

The Sustainable Benefits Of Supporting Chadri Printing Artisans
Tumblr media
In a world increasingly dominated by mass manufacturing and mechanization, conventional crafts preserve a special allure. Among these, the art of Chadri printing stands proud for its wealthy records, cultural significance, and sustainable practices. Originating within the Indian subcontinent, chadri printing includes intricately hand-block printing fabric with natural dyes and conventional motifs. Despite the demanding situations posed with the aid of modernization, assisting Chadri printing artisans not only preserves a unique cultural background but also promotes sustainability in various ways.
Cultural Preservation:
Chadri printing is more than just a craft; it is a living tradition deeply rooted within the cultural fabric of its beginning countries. From India to Pakistan and past, Chadri printing displays the records, tales, and aesthetic sensibilities of diverse groups. Each motif and sample contains layers of meaning, often reflecting nature, mythology, or nearby ideals.
By assisting Chadri printing artisans, we make contributions to the preservation of these cultural narratives. These artisans are custodians of age-antique techniques passed down via generations. Their paintings now not only sustain their livelihoods but additionally guarantee that this worthwhile cultural history endures for generations to come.
Environmental Sustainability:
In the present-day world, where we worry a lot about the surroundings getting worse and the weather changing, it's truly essential to do things in a sustainable way. Unlike mass-produced textiles that frequently depend upon artificial dyes and chemical compounds dangerous to the environment, Chadri printing embraces sustainability at its core.
Traditional Chadri artisans utilize natural dyes derived from flora, minerals, and other organic assets. These dyes not only produce colorful coloring but also biodegrade harmlessly, minimizing environmental effects. Furthermore, the hand-block printing method itself consumes extensively less electricity in comparison to business printing techniques, decreasing carbon emissions and power consumption.
By opting for Chadri-revealed textiles, purchasers actively aid eco-friendly practices and contribute to the protection of natural sources.
Economic Empowerment:
Behind every Chadri-published fabric lies the ability and craftsmanship of artisans who regularly come from marginalized communities. By helping Chadri printing, clients directly make contributions to the economic empowerment of these artisans, specifically women, who form a large portion of the body of workers in this zone.
For many artisans, chadri printing is not only a livelihood but a lifeline. By offering truthful wages and sustainable employment opportunities, we help uplift complete groups, breaking the cycle of poverty and dependency.
Moreover, the call for Chadri-revealed textiles creates a ripple impact, stimulating neighborhood economies and supporting ancillary industries together with farming (for natural dye resources) and small-scale fabric manufacturing.
Social Impact:
Beyond its monetary implications, Chadri printing fosters social brotherly love and community resilience. In many areas where this craft prospers, it serves as a focal point for social gatherings, ability-sharing, and cultural change. Through apprenticeships and casual mastering networks, expertise is passed down from grasp artisans to the following generation, ensuring continuity and innovation.
Furthermore, Chadri printing frequently empowers girls by offering them opportunities for unbiased earnings generation. In societies where gender equality stays a venture, this monetary organization translates into greater choice-making strength, progressed healthcare, and enhanced educational possibilities for women and their families.
Unique Aesthetic Appeal:
In an age of heavily produced homogeneity, Chadri-printed textiles stand out for their precise aesthetic appeal. The problematic designs, colorful colorations, and tactile niceness of hand-block published fabrics lend a timeless attraction to clothes, home furniture, and add-ons. By incorporating Chadri-published textiles into their lives, clients not only express their individuality but also connect with a worldwide network of artisans and fans who share an ardor for craftsmanship and authenticity.
Conclusion:
In a world increasingly described via speedy fashion and disposable consumerism, the iconic enchantment of Chadri printing lies in its undying beauty, cultural resonance, and sustainable ethos. By supporting Chadri printing artisans, we verify our commitment to maintaining cultural background, selling environmental sustainability, and fostering economic empowerment. As purchasers, we have the power to shape the future of style and craft. By selecting products that reflect our values and guide groups, we not only increase our lives but also contribute to a more equitable and sustainable global. Let us include the splendor of Chadri printing and the artisans at the back of it, understanding that our selections these days will leave a lasting legacy for generations to come.

How to Identify Pure Rose Water?
How to Recognize Authentic Rose Water?
1. Check the ingredients
Always read the ingredient list on the label before you buy Rose Water or Rose hydrosol. Fake rose water will have several ingredients like synthetic colour, fragrance, rose oil/essence, emulsifiers or preservatives. Pure rose water will have only one ingredient- steam-distilled rose water. The label should also indicate what variety of rose was used to prepare the rose water.
2. Evaluate its fragrance and colour
Another way to check the purity of rose water is through its colour and aroma. Pure rose water is always colourless like water and will have a delicate floral fragrance. So if the product has an overpowering or synthetic scent and is pink in colour, leave it out as it likely contains artificial dyes and fragrances that won’t offer you any therapeutic benefits.
3. But the right packaging
Exposure to light can degrade the quality of rose water and diminish its fragrance and potency over time. So pure rose water is always packaged in dark glass bottles to preserve its freshness.
4. Make sure it doesn’t foam
Some sellers mix rose essential oil with water with the help of solubilizers to create natural rose water. While it looks and smells similar to pure rose water, it will not offer the same therapeutic benefits that true hydrosol does.
So to check if the product indeed contains rose hydrosol, shake the bottle vigorously. If you notice a soap-like foam, it’s a clear sign that the product contains solubilizers.
5.  Consider the cost
While higher prices don’t always guarantee better quality, it’s best to be cautious of excessively cheap rose water. It takes almost 20 kilos of rose petals to create 10 litres of rose water. Therefore, unusually low prices may indicate that the product has been diluted or compromised in quality.
