Do Not Forget The words were knives and as Alina fiddled with her little token she wondered if he would be the one to remember her at all. He was a prince after all, a second son with the need to prove himself. He'd give everything for his country, for the crown. Will he even call her sunshine? When they'd see each other again - if they ever saw each other again, will his lips curl up into the familiar teasing smirk she had gotten accustomed to seeing the past couple of months? Or will his skin have shed and be replaced with one the generals of the army wear? “I'm a fox, sunshine, not a snake.” He'd probably say and laugh if he knew her thoughts Yet the foxes they had seen a year ago were still in area. The cubs her and Nikolai had helped were now grown and hunting. Nikolai was gone, yet the foxes lingered. This is their home. Just like the Grand Palace is Nikolai's. Alina wondered what that would be like, to have a home, a place to go back to.

“It’s a girl, Captain. She’s barely making it to shore.” 

Nikolai, comfortably perched at the bow of his ship, turns and makes his way down several steps--stopping by the ship’s left side. He pulls out a small telescope and searches the beach, spotting a soaking heap of cloth and furs as a girl drags herself out of the water, tries to stand and then falls back over, disappearing into the fabric. 

“Well, isn’t it her lucky day?” Nikolai grinned, giving the go ahead to dock as planned. 

The moment his boots touched the sand, he was moving toward her, curiosity always getting the better of him. 

When he was close enough to hear her, all he could make out was a muffled “fuck” as she battled with her own clothes. 

“Now that’s not very lady-like.” Nikolai tsked, “but, given the circumstances, I understand. Not many women, or people for that matter, know how to react in the presence of someone as handsome as I am.” 

The girl froze and Nikolai crouched down next to her. 

“It can’t be....” She said, and Nikolai realized he knew that voice. 

He tugged down the skirt of her dress and revealed a face he wasn’t sure he’d ever see again. At least, not outside of his dreams. 

“Nikolai.” Alina Starkov sighed, shaking her head in disbelief and begrudging acceptance.  “Of course I’d find you here.” 

While he was certain his expression gave way to the shock he felt, he hoped it hid that growing tightness he was beginning to feel in his heart. The same tightness he often felt when she was around. 

He reached out and touched her cheek, making sure she wasn’t a hallucination. It was only when he could feel the coolness of her skin, that he smiled. 

“Alina Starkov. Regretting your decision about turning down my proposal already?” He pulled his hand away and placed his on his heart. “I mean, I’m flattered but you didn’t have to nearly drown to make it up to me. I’m sure we could have found another way.” 

For a moment, all Alina could do was stare at him, but then that moment passed and suddenly she was sitting up, throwing her arms around him, and burying her face into his neck. Immediately, Nikolai felt himself melting into her arms, before wrapping his own around her. 

He closed his eyes, savouring in her touch and when he opened them she was glowing. Literally. 

He pulled away from her slightly, taking hold of her face. 

“I think you have a lot you need to update me on.” 

She laughed. 

“Where should I begin?” 

“The nearly drowning is probably best. Or perhaps the glowing is more important.” Nikolai ran his fingers through his hair. “You know what? Surprise me.”
