Concept of Aahaar | Uvas Ayurveda
AYURVEDA means “The Science of Life” and is the oldest and most comprehensive system of medicine invented for mankind. It is believed to have originated in 2500
B.C. Actually Ayurveda is rather a way of living to keep one in harmony with nature. It contains profound knowledge of maintaining good health, curing of disease and achieving a harmonious balance of body, mind and spirit. Central to this healing science is the doctrine of Tri- dosha (the vital energies of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) and the connection with the PanchaMahaBhootha (the five elements - ether, air, fire, water and earth.) Ayurveda teaches a way of life that enables us to be centred and focus on the healing that comes from within.
Ahara according to Ayurveda is one among the ‘TRAYO UPASTAMBHA’.
Other two are Nidra and Bhramhacharya.
Ahar(food) is important as, from proper wholesome and balanced diet, all the body constituents- dosha, dhatu and mala are formed. That is why it is said that “we are what we eat”.
Food is not only essential for our physical wellbeing but it gives nutrition to our mind also. What we eat influences not only on our physical activities but on the psychological aspect too.
Anything (food) which is consumed or ingested with the help of tongue, mouth and throat is called ahara.

I am still so pissed at that reddit post from yesterday. (More ableism and fatphobia and healthism ahead.)
I don’t want to link to it (nightmare scenario is someone getting it into their head to harass this poor kid who’s out of their depth), but basically the deal was this teen complaining that (not sure of pronouns) their mother isn’t taking care of her health and just lies in bed eating junk food and doesn’t exercise. And takes a lot of pills. For a briefly alluded to “various issues”. Because I guess taking your meds and taking care of your health are different things. Sigh.
To me, this looks like a very clear cut “mom is sick, teen either doesn’t get chronic illness or is engaged in magical thinking about the effectiveness of diet and exercise against chronic illness, needs to get a clue and back the fuck off (and call in adult reinforcements as the teen is doing a somewhat unclear amount of running the household and caretaking duties while mom is incapacitated)” situation.
To the other redditors, it looked like a very clear cut “the mother is suffering the consequences of unhealthy lifestyle choices.”
It makes me want to tear my hair out. Sure, nutrition matters to health, sure, exercise in general has a lot of positive benefits (another detail, the mother has depression), but it also seems like there’s this sort of “good sick person/bad sick person” thing to go along with the ”good fat person/bad fat person” thing (yes, the mother is also fat), where maybe people will believe you’re sick if you put on an adequate show of Trying To Get Better, but if you’re not Trying up to their standards, well, clearly you just want to be sick! Clearly you could be healthy any time you wanted to if you just tried hard enough!
The mother has been to a doctor, presumably, and is taking medications. The mother is going to therapy for her depression (and the teen seems to be complaining that the therapist is ineffective because the therapist isn’t pushing her to eat better etc, which is…not how therapy works, actually.) It‘s unclear, but it sounds like the mother may be keeping up her job and only collapsing in bed after she gets done with work, which is pretty common for people who are too sick to both work and have any sort of life outside of work, but healthy enough that they’re not actually getting fired from work either (and ergo ”can work” and aren’t eligible for disability.) Like…to me it really looks like the mother is doing a lot: (probably) still working, taking her meds, going to therapy. That’s the important stuff! For a lot of chronically ill people, exercise is less helpful than rest, for a lot of chronically ill people, lying in bed when you’re tired is the best thing you can do for your health. The idea that she’s “not trying” because her kid thinks that she should be trying to act like she isn’t sick, and is basically talking about her like she isn’t sick just out of shape, is just so painful.
I …guess I’m lucky, I keep hearing about this kind of thing from other people who are chronically ill, but the people in my life haven’t been like that at all, there’s been none of this, implying that it’s possible to have good health if you just want it hard enough nonsense.
“and she wonders why she feels so bad all the time” it’s…probably because of her “various issues”, not her “lifestyle”, ok?
(is the “clean eating”/“cure all your ailments by following the exact perfect diet“ thing reinforcing this mentality or caused by it or both? The world may never know.)
(One of the weird things about it? By my own standards, I mostly put quite a lot of effort into trying to get better. but it wouldn’t necessarily look that way from the outside, especially to someone who thinks it’s all about the diet and exercise. I do in fact spend most of my time just hanging around doing leisure stuff, and most of my self care regimen is, like, yoga nidra and stuff (and …remembering to eat lunch), and saying no to things I’m pretty sure would be too much for me, not exactly “exercise”. I do notice a significant difference between when I’m doing my self care stuff and when I’m not. But there’s a diminishing returns aspect to it: I don’t actually believe that spending all day doing yoga would have a much better effect than spending 20-40 minutes a day doing yoga.) (I have run into multiple doctors who speculated that maybe I started getting fatigued because I was out of shape. When I write out “here’s what I could do/did before I got sick, here’s what I can do now” they tend to back off. But it’s frustrating, because if I had been a couch potato (or more likely, someone who didn’t have time for exercise because they were always working or driving the kids around or doing the laundry or something), it’s not like a sedentary lifestyle would have protected me against getting CFS. It just means I would have had CFS and also a harder time convincing doctors I have CFS. there’s kind of a stereotype of CFS sufferers being driven overachievers; I’m pretty sure that’s not an innate connection, but just, you have to be pretty persistent (and pretty good at signaling you’re a good sick person) to get doctors to actually believe you.)
This poor woman just wants some pizza and soda and escapist TV after pushing herself through yet another interminable work day, and her kid can’t let up on “you’re destroying yourself with your food choices.” It’s crazy-making.

Adequate sleep, exercise, nutritional food, fellowship, and peace of mind are essentials, not indulgences. Ayurveda counts sleep as one of the Three Pillars Of Life (Traya Upastambha). The others are food & lifestyle. The inclusion of Sleep in the three Upastambha affirms its significance. The advantages of discovering our circadian (biological) rhythm comprise better energy and the shorter threat of obesity, diabetes, heart disorder, and cognitive health ailments Paying attention to what hours one sleeps on the weekends or when we are off job/academy for a vast time, can be a useful clue to our genuine sleep/wake rotation as we will probably float towards this timing when we do not hold different commitments. Our biological routine may be distinct from others in our own family. It may not be in a line with one present job or school schedule. Conduct and practice are the fundamental elements! According to Astanga Hrdayam, Happiness and unhappiness, nourishment & being thin or weak, strength & debility, sexual prowess & impotence, knowledge & ignorance, life & death all are dependent on sleep.⠀⠀ Gaining sufficient Nidra (sleep) at the proper times sustains wellbeing and good quality of life. Sound Nidra protects the growth and expansion of the body (Dhatu Pushti). Nidra aids to get reasonable learning capacity (gyan) & Ojas which is responsible for our body (immune system). Sleep insufficiency can influence the body as stress may grow and emotional wellbeing may be impacted.⠀⠀ Note:- Save a day-to-day log of what time one fall asleep and what time one gets out of bed to start the day #Sleep #OrganicAyurveda #AyurvedaLifeStyle #Nidra #lifestylehacks #TrayaUpastambha #DaringToRest #Daretorest #YogaNidra #RestTime #Radiantrest #Relax #SlowLiving #MindfulLiving #Ayurveda #YogaNidra #Ayurveda #Dinacharya #Ritucharya #balance #Lifestyle #Yoga #HealthyChoices #Health #HealthyChoices #HealthIsWealth #ThreePillarsOfLife (at Spokane, Washington) https://www.instagram.com/p/CblmAZkIlPu/?utm_medium=tumblr
