Newport council reveal the proposed £10 million Transporter Bridge restoration

THIS IS how Newport’s iconic Transporter Bridge site could look if funding for a £10 million makeover is successful.

Newport City Council has applied for a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to repair and the Grade I listed bridge and restore the gondola which carries people across the River Usk.

Artist’s impression of the planned development, focusing on a new visitor centre near Newport Docks Gates, has now been released by the council.

“The artist’s impression, which looks at the new visitor centre, gives a glimpse into the future of the changes that could take place to enhance the visitor experience.”

Built in 1906, the bridge remains one of only nine transporter bridges that are still in use across the world.

Newport City Council must now prove that it can raise £1.25 million to match some of the funding.

The council will be competing for funding with applicants from across the UK.
