My keepers. I still have a lot, but the collection is certainly less overwhelming. Annika (center front, in the light blue shirt) is the doll I’ve had the longest, and Indi (second row, white shirt, dark complexion) is my newest. Many others have come and gone, but these are the ones that spark the most joy when I see them.

Most of them are historicals, but for this photo I decided to dress everyone in relatively contemporary clothing (1990s-2020s), just to see how they all would look.

I’ve been running the numbers again!

*imagine my old-timey adding machine making clickety clack noises here*

After doing some investigating, I’ve got some interesting facts to share about our American Girl dolls and a a particular facial feature: their adorable freckles!

Right now, for the first time in 18 years, there are no Truly Me dolls with freckles. Truly Me dolls #23, #24, #55, and #56 have all been retired fairly recently, with I think #55 being the most recent. Earlier freckled dolls like #37 and #38 have been retired much longer. TM #56 was the most recent Truly Me doll to have been released with freckles, and that was way back in 2011. So we’ve had no new freckled TM dolls released in eleven years! The Truly Me numbered dolls are now at 92, so that’s 36 Truly Me dolls released since 2011 that have not had freckles.  

In fact, the most recently released doll to be given that freckle pattern was not actually Truly Me #56 but rather Saige Copeland, Girl of the Year for 2013. Still, that’s eight years since it was used for a character or Truly Me.

That doesn’t mean freckles aren’t in use on other dolls! They’re an available option in the Create Your Own doll generator, so there are constantly new dolls being made with freckles. But outside of CYO, the only currently available 18 inch dolls with freckles are Kit Kittredge (historical character) and Evette Peeters (World By Us contemporary character). Outside of 18 inch dolls, four WellieWishers dolls do have them: Ashlyn, Bryant, Willa, and Camille (although Camille has only one freckle, near her left eye). Bryant and Ashlyn share the same freckle pattern, and Willa’s is unique to her.  

Kit was the first American Girl doll ever to have freckles upon her release in 2000. It could have been earlier; Valerie Tripp wanted Felicity Merriman to have freckles, but the German factories in 1991 didn’t have the capability to do that. After Mattel acquired Pleasant Company in 1998, things changed a lot, and introducing freckles was one of their earliest innovations. 

Kit’s freckle pattern was used again in 2001, 2007, and 2013 Girls of the Year Lindsey Bergman, Nicki Fleming, and Saige Copeland, respectively. It was used again for historical best friend character Nellie O’Malley in 2004. It was also used on all six of the freckled Truly Me dolls that were released sporadically from 2004 to 2011: #23, #24, #37, #38, #55, and #56. Mia St. Clair, Girl of the Year in 2008, was the first to diverge from the standard freckle pattern; she had her own unique pattern that has not been used since. 

Evette’s freckles are unique to her. Other dolls that have also had unique freckle patterns are Tenney Grant (contemporary character retired in 2018), Grace Thomas (Girl of the Year 2015), the above mentioned Mia St. Clair, and Z Yang (contemporary character retired in 2018). Like Camille, Z had a single freckle on her cheek. 

I’m mentioning this now because there’s a new Truly Me release coming up soon, and there may or may not be some rumors that freckles might or might not be used again on a doll that could or could not potentially be introduced.... but you didn’t hear that from me!

Two days after their adventure, Samantha tried to meet up with Nellie in the tunnel but her friend didn’t respond to the signal. Instead she found Eddie Ryland, looking smug. He told Samantha that Nellie was sick and was being sent back to the city. She ran to the Ryland’s kitchen, where Nellie was sitting with her belongings at her feet. Nellie assured Samantha that she wasn’t really sick, but she still coughed sometimes and Mrs. Ryland thought that she would become a burden. This worried Samantha. If Nellie went back to the city, she would have to go back to work in the factory, and then she really would become sick. Samantha ran home and found Mrs. Hawkins in the kitchen. She asked the cook to put together some food for the O’Malleys, coming back to the Ryland’s with a full basket, and something extra. Samantha placed Lydia in Nellie’s arms and told her that the doll would be her friend. She stayed with Nellie until the Ryland’s driver arrived.

Uncle Gard and Miss Cornelia came to visit during sewing hour that afternoon, but Samantha didn’t join in the conversation. She’d had it with grownups. They kept taking away the people she cared about and didn’t trust her enough to tell her the truth. Everyone wondered why Samantha was in such a bad mood as she sat, focused intently on her almost-finished sampler. Finally she couldn’t take it anymore. Samantha told Grandmary that she knew Jessie had a baby, and explained how she and Nellie had gone to find out. Grandmary told her she was wrong to do this, but Samantha boldly countered that Grandmary was wrong to keep the information from her. Grandmary looked to Uncle Gard and Miss Cornelia for help, but they remained silent. After a moment, she admitted that she should have told Samantha the truth. Samantha asked if Jessie could come back to work and bring Nathaniel with her. Grandmary thought about it and decided that if Jessie and Mrs. Hawkins agreed, it would be alright. Embarrassed about being wrong, Grandmary changed the subject and asked Samantha where Lydia was. Samantha lied and said that she'd lost her. Grandmary began to lecture Samantha about having no sense of value, at which point Uncle Gard cut in. He said that there was nothing wrong with Sam’s sense of value. Mrs. Hawkins had told him how Samantha had given the doll to Nellie. Samantha explained how the O’Malleys had so little, and she wanted to know if there was anything they could do to help the family. Grandmary’s face brightened. Samantha was indeed turning into a fine young lady, whose actions spoke louder than words.

Happy Valentine’s Day!! Hope everyone is enjoying all the heart shaped things! I‘m pretty sure the new trend for me is obtaining dolls on holidays, cause guess who arrived today?

Miss Nellie O’Malley! She showed up in our area for only 20 dollars, and while she doesn’t have her meet and her limbs are extremely loose, 20 dollars for a Nellie is still a steal, especially one with no major markings or stains, great hair, and completely functional eyes.

But when I say loose limbs, I mean limbs so loose that I thought they were going to fall off when I took off the pants she came in

Picture for reference sake. These limbs are bad, so she’ll need a restringing ASAP. I’ve never done anything like that before, so I’m going to have to look up a tutorial.

But for now, I put her in Samantha’s middy outfit to get her more time period appropriate, and she’s staying in Lanie’s camper van for now so she can pose while sitting (It’s something I also got without the accessories for 20 dollars!)

And of course her best friend came over to visit!

Samantha isn’t technically mine, she’s my sisters doll, but she’s as excited to see her best friend as Nellie is! They definitely talked about their adventures from purchase to now for hours.

I’d say this fits the girl’s stories. From Nellie being adopted in Valentines Day 1906 to a reunion Valentines Day 2023
