In India, different communities celebrate their cultural ‘New Year’ with their age-old traditions. Just like that, the Islamic community celebrates their new year in the Monsoon Season. Although a festival of sorts, Muslims don’t celebrate this festival with much joy because of its history. Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar and is one of the four sacred months after Ramadan. It begins after the sighting of the full moon on the final day of the Islamic calendar.

Chhat Puja, observed on the sixth day after Diwali, is said to be incepted by Lord Ram and Sita after returning home from exile. They bathed in a river, observed fasts and ate only at the break of dawn the next day after offering prayers to Sun god. This ritual subsequently evolved into Chhat Puja. But did you know that this festival also has scientific importance, apart from a religious significance? The sunlight during sunset and sunrise is rich in Light A- a type of UV rays which has been proven helpful in curing skin diseases like leprosy. The long hours of fasts help in washing out toxins, while the dips in water during dawn helps in increasing solar bio-electricity in our body.

Originating from Rajasthan, Ghevar is a sweet treat traditionally popular during the Rakshabandhan and Teej festivals. It’s also famous in some of the neighbouring states like Delhi, Haryana, Gujarat, Western U.P., etc. Moreover, it’s a disc-shaped syrup-y sweet consisting of refined flour and has some varieties which include mawa and malai ghevar along with the plain one. As per Ayurveda, this sweet provides relief during the months of July-August-September. These months are usually associated with mood swings, dryness, and acidity in our body. This ghee-laden sweet contains calming properties on mind as well as body due to the use of ghee and its sweetness.

Indian Fast Food in an One Platter
Upwas Thali is a Maharashtrian delicacy that consists of everything upwas!! Also known as Fariyali Thali, it’s popular on traditional fasting days for Indians. While fasting days include Chaturdashi, Pournima among many others, it’s a one-stop meal to keep the hunger demons at bay. The dish includes several elements like paneer in kaju gravy, peanut potato sabzi, bhagar flour-based puri, sabudana khichdi and wada, potato halwa, yoghurt, and fresh fruits. Although the dish is variable, our chef uses her family recipe, which brings out its authenticity and finger-licking taste.
