New Things to Beware on the Internet
On May 3rd, Google released 8 new top-level domains (TLDs) -- these are new values like .com, .org, .biz, domain names. These new TLDs were made available for public registration via any domain registrar on May 10th.
Usually, this should be a cool info, move on with your life and largely ignore it moment.
Except a couple of these new domain names are common file type extensions: ".zip" and ".mov".
Tumblr media
This means typing out a file name could resolve into a link that takes you to one of these new URLs, whether it's in an email, on your tumblr blog post, a tweet, or in file explorer on your desktop.
What was previously plain text could now resolve as link and go to a malicious website where people are expecting to go to a file and therefore download malware without realizing it.
Folk monitoring these new domain registrations are already seeing some clearly malicious actors registering and setting this up. Some are squatting the domain names trying to point out what a bad idea this was. Some already trying to steal your login in credentials and personal info.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is what we're seeing only 12 days into the domains being available. Only 5 days being publicly available.
What can you do? For now, be very careful where you type in .zip or .mov, watch what website URLs you're on, don't enable automatic downloads, be very careful when visiting any site on these new domains, and do not type in file names without spaces or other interrupters.
I'm seeing security officers for companies talking about wholesale blocking .zip and .mov domains from within the company's internet, and that's probably wise.
Be cautious out there.

I love names. Here’s names I’d give a child of mine, and I adore them all:
Althea
Milena
Lara
Leora
Winona
Jesper
Oscar
Lewis
Nicklas
Gideon
The boys’ names are pretty boring, and I do like gender neutral names in theory, I just don’t think they work very well here.
Pacome
Veles
Briam
Claudia
Paloma
Leander
Gillis
Rupert
Sedna
Imara
Ismene
Sutton
Scout
Sawyer
While I’ve always thought I’d wait until I see my child to decide their name for sure… I do know what middle names I’m choosing from. There’s some difference bc some just do not suit different names, but there ish the same.
I am very partial to Althea and Jesper currently though, but it’s gone in periods. Previously it was Lara and Lewis, or Milena and Oscar. Gideon is a name I like but is pretty far out there, and Leora is a new addition to the shortlist but may be short lived. Winona and Nicklas are names I love for different reasons, but they’re also wildcards. Winona is more probable that I’d use than Nicklas.

okay so I have this idea for a new therapy thing. basically the idea is after an abusive relationship or a combat deployment or anything that might conceivably leave you with PTSD and a loss of ability to reasonably gauge how bad the shit that happened to you actually was, you sit there with a mental health professional for like, a solid 30 to 60 minutes, you tell them short vignettes of your experiences and they respond ONLY by rating how fucked up each one was on a scale from 1 to 10 and then you move on. the objective isn't to reflect deeply on specific experiences but to get a sustained series of reassurances that what you went through was, in fact, That Bad and gradually rebuild your trust in your own present and future ability to judge when what you're going through isn't okay.
currently calling it Rapid Fire Affirmation and Recalibration Therapy (RAP-FART). working title, open to feedback.
