Hotokegaura - Mutsu Bay Aomori
After driving around the west coast of Aomori, we took a ferry to the Shimokita Peninsula at the entrance of Mutsu Bay which is on the northeastern side of the prefecture. The peninsula is the most northern point of Honshu and is full of amazing places and scenery.
Along the western coast of the peninsula is Hotokegura, a two kilometre stretch of coastline filled with crazy-shaped, 100 meter tall white rocks and cliffs that have been eaten away by the rough coastal waves and winds. Hotoke means Buddha, and gaura, bay so the area is known as the Buddha Bay as many of the formations are said to resemble Buddhist disciples.
The beach is a steep one-kilometer climb from the car park, going down isn't too bad, but on a hot day it was a slow climb with several stops before we reached our car, but worth every step!
The color of the water and the height of the rock formations were truly magnificent, and unlike any other place in Japan, we have visited.

Discarded Tires Are 'Ghost Fishing' Hermit Crabs
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hermit crabs are essential scavengers in the ocean. They may crawl into discarded tires looking for food or shelter, and become trapped and die of starvation. Humberto Ramirez via Getty Images
Every year, the world discards around 30 million metric tons of car and truck tires. The majority of these are reclaimed and used in recycled materials or burned as fuel, but that still leaves millions of tires that end up in landfills or are dumped illegally. Through negligence and unscrupulous intent, some portion of these unused waste tires find their way into the world’s oceans where they can cause serious harm.
The toxic chemicals and microplastic pollution that tires can release into the environment are well documented, but now new research suggests a new way that tires can endanger wildlife: their shape. When tires end up in the world’s oceans their hollowed-out doughnut form can make them deadly for crustaceans, specifically hermit crabs.
The study, published today in the journal Royal Society Open Science, finds that hermit crabs, which famously inhabit discarded shells, climb into abandoned tires seeking shelter or a meal only to find themselves unable to escape the recurved walls of the tire’s interior—and eventually they starve to death. In just one year, the researchers counted more than 1,200 hermit crabs that became imprisoned inside a set of six tires placed on the seafloor.
Atsushi Sogabe, an ecologist at Hirosaki University in Japan and the study’s lead author, writes via email that his inspiration to conduct this study came while studying pipefish in Japan’s Mutsu Bay in 2012. During a research dive, he encountered a tire full of shells on the seafloor. Some of those shells contained hermit crabs, and Sogabe suspected that the tire’s shape created an ecological problem analogous to ghost fishing, in which lost pieces of fishing gear such as nets or crab traps keep capturing sea life but are never retrieved.
To investigate whether hermit crabs couldn’t find their way out of a tire once they’d ventured inside, Sogabe and his collaborators set up a pair of experiments. In the field, Sogabe and his co-author fixed six passenger car tires to the seafloor with tent spikes in about 25 feet of water. The team left the tires to marinate in the brine for about a year and a half to more closely mimic tires that had spent long enough in the marine environment to accumulate algae and barnacles (during this period the researchers made sure to periodically rescue any sea creatures that entered the tires). Then for the next year Sogabe and his co-author swam down to the tires each month and counted the hermit crabs they had captured. After each of these visits, the researchers removed the animals from their rubber-walled prisons and released the critters a good distance away.
All told, the tires racked up a total of 1,278 hermit crabs over the 12 months Sogabe and his co-author spent observing them, with the highest total coming in March when the team found 246 trapped hermit crabs. Presumably, had the researchers not intervened, nearly all of these animals would have perished inside the tires.

The researchers found that six car tires left in the ocean for a year, including this one, trapped more than 1200 hermit crabs.
Atsushi Sogabe
The second experiment was conducted in the lab and was designed to test under controlled conditions hermit crabs’ abilities to escape an average car tire. The researchers dropped a tire inside a large aquarium and then released groups of ten hermit crabs at a time either inside or outside of the tire and gave them 18 hours to figure things out. Out of 120 individual hermit crabs from two different species, 19 managed to crawl inside the interior of the tire and none escaped.
Between the two experiments, the researchers showed that hermit crabs have a tough time with submerged tires and that this form of marine pollution has the potential to harm an important part of many ocean ecosystems.
Past research has also shown hermit crabs to be vulnerable to the temptations of crawling inside cozy looking trash. A 2020 study in the Journal of Hazardous Materials found that in one year more than half a million hermit crabs became entrapped by washed-up plastic debris on the beaches of three tropical islands. This study also introduced a sinister wrinkle to the story, pointing out that the stench of death from inside these plastic tombs may actually attract more victims.
Hermit crabs are attracted to the smell of their own dead because it means a perfectly good shell has likely just come back onto the market. So, once a few of their compatriots have starved to death inside a plastic bottle or a rubber tire, a new crop of hermit crabs searching for hot new real estate might be led to their doom.
Ingrid Giskes, who directs the Ocean Conservancy’s ghost gear initiative, says that this creates an unfortunate parallel with what can occur with abandoned crab or lobster traps. “It becomes a vicious cycle where an empty trap becomes a baited trap and keeps going and going,” says Giskes. “And tires are so durable and hard to break down, they could theoretically keep doing this for decades.”
Currently no evidence shows that any of the more than 800 known species of hermit crabs are in trouble because of tires, but if their numbers take a hit in places where tires and other forms of plastic pollution are especially common, it would likely have negative consequences for those ecosystems locally. Hermit crabs are essential scavengers in the places they call home, roaming the sea floor or the intertidal zone looking for morsels other larger species may have missed and generally keeping things tidy. Many of the smaller species of hermit crabs, which are actually more closely related to lobsters than crabs, are also important because of all the other animals that rely on them as a food source.
“The environmental problems identified in this study may be minor compared to global warming and ocean pollution caused by microplastics,” says Sogabe. “However, this is a good example of how our casual behavior can have a negative impact on wildlife in unexpected ways.”
Sogabe says future studies on this topic might seek to refine the scope of the problem by assessing just how many tires end up in the world’s oceans and determining where they might prove dangerous to wildlife such as hermit crabs.
“Tires are another example of a product that human society is producing and discarding that has significant negative impacts,” says Jennifer Lavers, a marine ecotoxicologist at the University of Tasmania and lead author of that 2020 paper that highlighted the dangers of hermit crabs becoming stuck in plastic pollution. “The mortality our paper calculated and the mortality this paper suggests are not small numbers when you extrapolate them to the global scale. Plastic and tire production are likely to keep increasing, which could make those numbers even larger in the future.”

Shark in the water!
MUTSU BAY, JAPAN (July 20, 2020) -- Sailors lower an AN/SLQ-48 Mine Neutralization Vehicle (MNV) into the water for mine hunting practice aboard United States Navy Avenger-class mine countermeasures ship USS Pioneer (MCM 9).
The U.S. Navy and Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) were working together in an annual training exercise to strengthen interoperability and increase proficiency in mine countermeasure operations.
Looking somewhat like a robotic shark, the 2,700-pound (1,225 kg) AN/SLQ-48 system uses a remote-controlled submersible vehicle to identify underwater objects and, if they are mines, render them safe. The TV- and sonar-equipped Mine Neutralization Vehicle places an explosive destructive charge on bottom mines, and cuts the cables of moored mines, neutralizing them as they rise to the surface.
(Note the cutters just forward of the “decorative” teeth.)
It can travel up to 1,000 yards (900 meters) away from the ship -- connected via a cable -- and can reach 2,000 feet (600 meters) deep.

Tomoe, the Eastern Tigress - Chapter Eighteen
Chapter Eighteen - Enter Genba!
“Gyaaaaah!” An Ohu male let out a dying scream as fangs tore through him like paper. What had once been a small patrol of dogs now lay in the snow, their bodies shredded and mangled. A large paw landed one of their heads. “Mmph,” the murderer of the unfortunate males grunted. “Too easy. None of these fools were Ohu’s best. They all must be hiding out in Gajou, the cowards.” The bloodthirsty dog was a massive harlequin Great Dane, much like Hougen, though his ears were undamaged and flopped at the middle. This was Genba, brother of the tyrant. With vibrant, yellow eyes, the male looked around, huffing impatiently. “Where the hell are those bastards…?” he grunted impatiently. “If they don’t report to me by the next hour, they’ll regret it. C’mon, you lot. Let’s keep cleaning up in the meantime, hehehehe.” “Won’t we recruit any of them, sir?” asked a soldier. Genba’s jowls peeled back as he flashed his fangs in a wicked smile. “Not a single one of Gin’s allies leaves this mountain alive,” he responded. With that, the march was on. An army of three hundred males began their climb up the mountain. Genba licked his chops; he hungered for the taste of Ohu blood. “Sergeant Ben!” cried Mel, his voice bouncing off the stone walls of the Ohu stronghold. As he entered the main chamber, the puppy saw Ben jolting awake. Instinctually, he looked around, though he could only see blackness. “What’s that?” Ben barked, slightly panicked. His nose quivered, catching the scent of Mel nearby. He turned towards the approaching puppy. “Mel? Is that you? What’s the matter?” “I think there’s enemies trying to enter Ohu territory,” explained Mel. “They told me they wanted to join Ohu, but something didn’t seem right about them. I sent them in the opposite direction, but…” The puppy shuddered. “I think this might have to do with Hougen.” “Damn…” muttered Ben, his brow furrowing. He stood up. “We need to get everyone back here. With luck, we can hold back an enemy attack on Gajou.” “But will we be enough, sir?” asked Mel cautiously. “We don’t know how many dogs are gonna be coming.” “That may be, but the least we can do is try and keep a hold on Gajou for as long as we can. We’ve just reclaimed Gajou; I’m not about to lose it “Sergeant…” the Golden Retriever gasped admirably. Ben’s words filled Mel with inspiration; his fears began melting away as the pup’s chest swelled with confidence. “How can I help, sir?” “Lead me outside,” Ben instructed. He held up a foreleg. “I’ll howl for the others.” “Sir!” replied Mel, before padding to Ben’s side and grabbing his foreleg gently in his maw. Together, both males slowly made their way to the entrance of Gajou. The base was mostly empty of dogs; those who weren’t patrolling or hunting were resting and enjoying meals. Noticing the ex-General, the small gathering of soldiers sat up, their ears perking in attention. “Sergeant?” called a male. “What’s going on?” “Prepare yourselves,” responded the old Dane. “We may be in for a fight.” “Sir!” the dogs replied in union. They got up, taking their places in front of Gajou and staring out into the woods. Mel, meanwhile, guided Ben up the rocky structure, up to the very top. When the Great Dane felt that the time was right, he raised his head and unleashed a deep, booming howl. At the edge of the forest, gazing out at the stronghold, the leader of Genba’s seven scouts began to smirk. “You guys go and get Lord Genba,” he ordered. “I’ll keep watch, heh.” Nodding, the other six males were off, leaving their scarred leader as he set his sights on Mel. He bared his fangs. As soon as Genba gave the word, he was making a beeline for that lying, little twerp. The minutes passed, and soon the Ohu base was beginning to fill with the remains of the army and its Mutsu allies. The Veterans gathered at the base of Gajou. “What’s going on, Ben?” Jiyū called out. “Intruders,” the Dane replied roughly. He lifted his paw again and Mel quickly helped him down from atop Gajou. “I don’t know how many for certain, but my gut tells me we’ll be in for quite a fight.” “Hougen’s come here already…?” murmured a concerned Wilson. “Moss and Musashi still haven’t returned. Even with the dogs from Mutsu, our numbers might not be enough…” “Who gives a damn about numbers?” snapped Kurotora. “My boys’ll cut half of the enemy’s troops down with a single move. We won’t be fighting long.” “Don’t be so cocky, Kurotora,” Akame warned. “Even Battouga wielders can be overwhelmed by great numbers.” “What are you doubting them for?” the hot-blooded Kai shot an angry look at the ganin. “You really think they’ll lose to a--” “We’re wasting time arguing like this,” Cross interrupted. Kurotora growled in response, but otherwise said nothing. The Saluki turned to her mate. “Tell us what to do, Ben.” “Kisaragi,” said Ben, taking a whiff of the air and glancing in the direction of where he smelled the Husky. “If it’s alright, I’d like for the others to form small platoons with the dogs you brought. When the intruders come, you’ll all lead your platoons into battle as you see fit. Remember, no one is to throw their lives away needlessly. If we have to fall back...then so be it.” “Yes!” most of the Veterans responded. Kurotora, however, was still fuming. He refused to believe that Ohu could be taken down again, especially not by a bunch of flea-bitten mutts. His and Chutora’s sons knew the way of a Kai dog: they fought to the death. Kurotora’s brother, Akatora, was proof of that mindset. As the Veterans split, beginning to seek out dogs for their platoons, Kurotora immediately sought out the young Kais. “Dad,” Harutora began. “There you are. We came as fast as we could.” “Good,” the black Kai replied. “Because all that training I’ve put you boys through is being put to the test today. Get ready.” “We are, Uncle,” assured Shouji. “But don’t tell us you’ll be fighting too…?” “Of course I am.” Kurotora looked offended at the suggestion that he would ever miss out on a battle. “Why the hell wouldn’t I?” Neither Shouji, nor the other young Kais responded, though Chutora’s boys all shared concerned glances. Kurotora grunted impatiently. “Come on, then. You boys’ll be under my platoon. We’ll show this pack of mutts what Ohu soldiers are made of.” The next few minutes were tense and silent. Each platoon stood, facing a part of the forest. They were each spread apart from each other, making it impossible for the enemy to approach unnoticed. As the minutes passed, a rumbling filled the air, the threatening bays of enemy dogs following shortly after. Jiyū stood before the dogs under command, her heart pounding in her chest. If even a single one of Genba’s dogs managed to cut her down… No, the panda Shepherd thought, shaking her head. She wouldn’t die, not before seeing her family again. For the sake of surviving this war, she’d take down any dog who dared to approach her. A cold, white flake landed on her nose. Staring up towards the sky, Jiyū noticed that it had started snowing. Within minutes, the winds began picking up. A blizzard had come to the Pass, and the forest was soon partially obstructed by the increasing snowfall. The platoon leaders peered through the snow as best they could. There was faint movement coming from the edge of the woods. Genba’s soldiers marched onto the stone battleground, led by the Great Dane. “They’re here…!” Kisaragi gasped, his eyes widening as the large number of enemy dogs. The rest of the Ohu Army braced themselves. At Ben’s signal, they’d attack. Across from them, Genba was taking notice of what stood before him. “How cute,” he purred. “Even with their smaller numbers, they still think they can win. This’ll be easy.” With that, he raised his head and let out a howl for his lackeys to attack. Immediately, Genba’s army rushed forward. “Ohu!” Ben’s voice boomed in retaliation. “Defend!” HRAAAAAAAH! The distance was closed between the two armies. The unstoppable force was met with an immovable wall of Ohu soldiers. The members of each platoon moved forwards, assisting their leaders in keeping as many dogs out as they could. Fangs tore necks and claws gored bellies. Genba’s troops came in waves; a number of dogs would attempt to break through Ohu’s numbers, only to be launched back the way they came. The strength of Ohu had not been lost. Among Genba’s army, the Husky male that had led the search for Gajou was searching the battlefield for Mel. He hung behind the rest of the fighters, scanning each platoon for the little, golden pup. As he approached the area where Akame’s platoon was fighting, he could make out Mel’s little body as the youngster dove to the side, lashing out with his hind paw and giving an enemy a kick in the throat. It was an impressive feat for someone his age, but his luck would soon run out. The vengeful male pushed past his comrades, dashing for Mel. “You’re mine!” he roared. Mel only had seconds to turn and face him before fangs clamped down on his neck. Mel could only let out a sharp, croaking sound as his airway was cut off. Sneering, the Husky picked Mel up and bashed him into the ground. “This is what you get for lying to me,” he seethed. “You should’ve run away while you had the chance, brat, gyahaha!” By now, Mel was having trouble staying conscious. Desperately, he swung his forepaws, trying to pry the male’s jaws apart. The Husky snickered. “What’s the matter? Does it hurt? Heheh...good.” No…! Mel thought. His eyes burned with tears. If he died here, everything he’d done to become an Ohu soldier would’ve been for nothing. He might as well have died by the fangs of his old boss, Blue. Had what Weed told him all those weeks ago been true? Was his spirit really weak? “Not…” Mel choked quietly. A single tear streamed down his cheek. “...weak…” “Eh?” The Husky raised a brow. “What’s that, pipsqueak? Speak up. I wanna hear you beg.” “Not…weak...!” said Mel again, this time, his brow furrowing as he attempted to gather all of his strength. He tucked in his hind legs and shot out a paw. The puppy heard a bloodcurdling scream; the Husky’s grip on his neck loosened. Quickly, Mel slid out from beneath the male and got to his paws. Facing the male, Mel could now see what damage he’d done: he’d stabbed into the Husky’s eye with his claws, permanently rupturing it. The young retriever’s heart raced. He’d battled before, but this was the first time he’d injured an enemy like this. The fight wasn’t over yet, however, and if the Husky wasn’t filled with homicidal rage before, he definitely was now. “You…” he seethed, glaring at Mel with his remaining eye. He pounced, saliva dripping from his parting jaws. “You worthless, little--!” Mel darted beneath the Husky, catching him by the throat and cutting him off mid-insult. With a grunt, Mel flung the male down onto his back, forcing a yelp from his maw. Without wasting a second, the puppy bit down on the Husky’s exposed neck. He felt the enemy male’s muscles tense. “You wouldn’t…” the Husky hissed, though his voice trembled from fear. Mel’s brow furrowed. Without hesitation, he jerked his head back, the wet sound of ripping flesh following behind. The Husky gurgled, blood filling his throat and mouth. It wasn’t long before everything went black. Mel lifted his head, gasping for breath. At that very moment, Mel had become a new dog. He left the Husky’s body there, joining his rest of his packmates in combat. By now, Genba was losing his patience. The Ohu soldiers weren’t the pushovers he assumed they’d be, and the waves of attacks were being repelled with little difficulty. With a growl, the Great Dane lifted his head, calling out over the battle: “That’s it! All of you, attack at once! Crush their barrier!” Genba’s army obeyed, now charging the Ohu Army as one, large wave of death. The Ohu Platoons stuck together, desperately trying to keep the enemy out. Unfortunately, Genba’s minions had no desire to fight fair. Two, three, and sometimes four dogs would tackle an Ohu soldier, not even giving them the chance to try and fight back. “Ben!” Cross cried as three enemy soldiers aimed for her mate. Ben, already occupied with one enemy, swiveled his ears in order to pick up the sounds of the approaching males. With a grunt, he swung the male he was clutching onto, smacking away one of the three soldiers. Cross assisted, delivering a headbutt to a second male. The final soldier, however, skirted around the old Saluki and caught her by the flank, sinking in his fangs. “Gyaaaah!” “Cross!” Ben cried in alarm. The Dane was about to turn and assist his beloved, but another pair of soldiers pounced on him, one tearing at the side of his neck and the other gripping a paw. With his lack of sight and the overwhelming scents and sounds surrounding him, Ben was now at a major disadvantage. Blindly, the male chomped at the air and swung his head like a battering ram. Cross, meanwhile, reached back and grasped her attacker by the back of the neck. Then, she flung him against one of his comrade’s holding Ben. Both males yelped in pain before lying on the snow, dazed and injured. With only one male left to fight, Ben effortlessly managed to throw him off with a swing of his head. The final male vanished into the blizzard; some other Ohu soldier could deal with him. “Are you alright, Cross?” asked Ben, panting from exertion. Even with all of his strength, he was still incredibly old, especially for a Great Dane. Cross leaned against him, licking his cheek. “I’m alright,” the bitch replied. “Just a couple of scratches. But I don’t think we can keep this up, Ben.” The Saluki paused, taking a quick glance around. The individual platoons had fallen, with Ohu’s soldiers now gathered together in order to protect their allies. Most of Kisaragi’s soldiers had fallen, as did much of Ohu’s remaining troops. “We need to fall back, Ben!” “Dammit…” Ben cursed, his ears falling slightly. He shouldn’t have been surprised, and yet the thought of having to flee their base once again left a particularly sour taste in his mouth. Still...what sort of man would he be if he allowed the rest of his troops to be killed? With a sigh, Ben raised his head. “Ohu soldiers! Fall back!” At Ben’s command, most of the Ohu survivors began to flee, rushing in the direction of Gajou. Jiyū gritted her teeth, the burning pain of defeat hurting more than her physical wounds. The only dogs to remain where they were were Kurotora and the young Kais. Harutora and Nobutora were prepared to run, but their father barked at them sharply. “Where are you two going!?” “Father…?” asked Nobutora timidly. He glanced back at the fleeing Ohu Army. “Mr. Ben gave the order to leave; shouldn’t we--?” “Hell no!” Kurotora snapped. He and his nephews continued taking on approaching soldiers, trying to keep them at bay. “A Kai Ken never runs from a fight. My brothers never did, and I sure as Hell don’t plan to!” “Kurotora!” a new voice called. Glancing over his shoulder, Akame returned to the battlefield. “Didn’t you hear Ben!? Fall back!” “Like Hell I will.” “Uncle, perhaps you should go with Mr. Akame,” Shouji suggested. Kurotora stared at his nephew in disbelief. “Have you lost your mind, Shouji?” barked the old Kai. “I have plenty of fight still in me.” “You’re the one who raised us,” Buru said, pausing to dispatch an enemy. “If you died here, we’d never forgive ourselves.” “Fool!” Kurotora was seething now. “I’m not gonna--” “Let’s go, Kurotora!” Akame interrupted, grabbing the Kai’s scruff in his jaws. “The rest of you boys fall back; that’s an order.” “Let go!” screamed Kurotora, struggling in Akame’s grip. His vision had gone red from anger. “Let go of me!” Nobutora and Harutora shared a glance, before aiding the ganin in dragging their father off. Despite his protests, Kurotora was taken towards the cliff behind Gajou. Most of the Ohu soldiers had leapt down into the river already; it was time for them to follow. “AKAME!” roared Kurotora as he felt himself being pulled down into the abyss. At Ohu’s base, Chutora’s four sons remained, facing the enemy pack and surrounded by the bodies of dogs they’d once called comrades. They fought against Genba’s army as best they could, hoping to bring down as many as they could before their inevitable deaths. In their minds, they all had the same thought: Uncles...Father...this is our final moment. May the rest of our comrades use our sacrifice to their advantage. “Grah!” Buru howled as multiple sets of fangs tore at his flesh. He stumbled, soon being overtaken by Genba’s males. “Buru!” cried Dodo, before he, too, was tackled. His cries rang out as a swarm of enemies wasted no time in ripping him apart. “Brothers!” Shigure sobbed. Tears burned in his eyes; how could his brothers have been slaughtered in a matter of seconds!? The Kai mix felt someone grabbing his scruff, and his heart fluttered. Quickly, he began to struggle with a growl. “Easy, kid!” Smith’s voice caught his ears. “It’s me!” “Uncle Smith!?” asked Shigure in disbelief. The Spaniel didn’t respond as he began pulling the younger male away. “Eh? Wait! I can’t leave, Uncle! Me and Shouji...we can do this!” “Don’t be stupid!” Smith scolded. “We’ll be back for Gajou soon, but right now, you and Shouji’ll--!” “Take this!” Shouji roared from afar. Smith and Shigure looked to see the male launching himself into the sky, over Genba’s army. His body cut through the air like a serpent, the Ran Daryushin-Battōga, and was aiming towards the Great Dane. Genba, who’d been watching the entire battle from the safety of the treeline, looked up at the approaching Kai. He smirked. SWOOSH! A single swing of Genba’s paw picked up a curtain of snow, blocking Shouji’s sight. “Uh!?” Shouji cried out in alarm. He couldn’t see Genba at all! Perhaps it wasn’t too late to stop his Battouga…? As the thought came to Shouji’s mind, the snow fell back to the ground. Shouji could now see Genba’s parted fangs ready to chomp down on his head. “SHOUJI!” Shigure screamed. “GAAAAAAAAAAAH!” Shouji’s head exploded into a shower of blood and brain matter. Genba dragged his body to the ground, bashing it against the snow. The scream ended as suddenly as it began. Shouji was dead. “Shouji!” Shigure was wailing, hot tears now running freely down his face. Smith, who’d watched in absolute dread, felt his legs begin to weaken. How could this be happening? Why now? Why after they’d just gotten Gajou back from Kaibutsu!? Genba’s dogs now advanced towards the two males, the final obstacles needing to be killed. Smith, though he desperately longed to cry for the fallen Kais, began to drag the screaming and crying Shigure away to the cliff. As Akame had done, Smith had no choice but to force the young Kai down into the river. Shigure’s wails were the last thing Genba’s army heard before the battlefield had gone silent. Genba, still holding onto the lifeless Shouji, slowly began to pad to the cliffs, his remaining soldiers following behind him. The air was heavy with the scent of blood and death, not that Genba seemed to care. His paws kicked and crushed any carcass that lied in his path, no matter if they were friend or foe. The soldiers, on the other hand, had a bit more respect. Even if Ohu had been the enemy, it was foolish to deny that they’d fought with honor and courage. “Hmph,” Genba finally grunted, stopping as he peered over the cliff. “Those Ohu bastards...so obsessed with honor that they’d rather take themselves out rather than feel my fangs. How boring. Still...it does make things easier for me, heh.” The Dane turned back to his comrades. “Oi. Start clearing away these bodies. This place needs to be spotless for when my brother arrives.” “Shall we bury them all?” asked a grunt. “Pheh,” Genba scoffed. “Don’t be stupid. Why waste time on burials when…” Genba paused, taking up Shouji by the back of his neck. He held him over the cliffs, the soldiers looking on, wide-eyed. “...we can toss ‘em out like the trash they are?” With hesitation, Genba threw the Kai dog down into the rapids. The soldiers flinched at the faint splash. What a monster Genba was! Silently, they slipped away, following their leader’s orders. Meanwhile, the sadistic Great Dane threw back his head, cackling madly. “I did it, Hougen!” cried Genba triumphantly. “Ohu is DEAD!” The howl of victory echoed through the mountain, down after the retreating Ohu soldiers. Kurotora, who’d still been struggling violently against Akame and his sons, stopped to listen. “Son of a bitch…!” he growled. “What have you three done!? Chutora’s boys...my boys…!” “They should’ve retreated behind us,” replied Akame reassuringly. “Don’t worry, Kurotora. We’ll all return to fight another--” “NO!” Kurotora’s single eye glistened. Though the river’s water was freezing cold, the fire in the old Kai’s blood wasn’t dampened. “There won’t be another fight, not for my boys! Nobutora! Harutora! You both should know that more than anyone, and yet…!” “Father, you have to understand,” argued Harutora. “Not even you could’ve taken on that many dogs! Even our cousins knew that!” “Why do you think I’m so angry then!?” A tear now rolled down Kurotora’s cheek. “Shouji, Buru, Dodo, Shigure…! They’ll fight to the death! You hear that bastard!? He’s won! He’s...he’s killed…!” Akame’s blood ran cold as the realization settled in. Nobutora and Harutora, despite their firm grips on their father, felt themselves begin to tear up as well. A hopeless Kurotora let out a sudden, anguished wail, one that rang out over the fast-paced winds.

summary: mutsu and kagura in space
their stowaway doesn’t try very hard to hide her presence. really, she doesn’t try at all. complaints about some ravenous little earthling bullying the staff in the kitchens brings mutsu down to deal with their guest. she might be young, but mutsu knows this girl is another yato based on their previous encounters and she understands she would be the best one to confront the kid.
“why are you here?” mutsu asks.
“i was hungry,” kagura replies between bites.
“why are you on this ship?” mutsu rephrases.
“i was bored.”
mutsu frowns. “this is a place of business. this is no place for children.”
“i’m not a child,” kagura protests, lowering her bowl onto the counter with a loud thud. she glares at mutsu, but the venom in her eyes is covered by the lingering rice around her lips. “i’m fourteen.” she pauses. “and three quarters.”
when she was fourteen, mutsu was the heiress to a fleet of space pirates and traded slaves like any other commodity. the girl before her is just as small and just as fierce, but her emotions flicker over her face so easily.
mutsu sighs. “is your--” she mulls over the right word, “caretaker aware that you are here?”
“gin-chan?” kagura wipes her face with the back of her hand and then wipes that hand on her dress. she shrugs noncommittally. “i might have left him a letter.”
“might have?”
“i didn’t.”
“so he’s unaware.”
“i told sadaharu!”
mutsu recalls the dog in question and recognizes how unhelpful him knowing will be when gintoki realizes kagura is missing and raises hell. she takes a breath. she doesn’t yell at the crew and only really ever raises her voice at tatsuma if anyone, so she won’t yell at this foolish child.
“why are you here, kagura?” mutsu asks once more.
perhaps it’s the use of her name that makes the girl falter. her hands link behind her back and she begins to shift, suddenly shy. mutsu has met this girl a handful of times, and at no point would she ever have called kagura anything akin to meek.
“i’ve only met a few yato before,” kagura mumbles. “aside from my family, i mean.” she shifts her weight from one foot to the other, silently stalling. when she finally looks up at mutsu, her cheeks are dusted with pink. “you’re the first yato lady i’ve ever met aside from my mami. you’re like me, yes?”
mutsu doesn’t think she’s anything like this girl.
“sorta,” kagura corrects. “mostly. whatever.” she shrugs, looking down at her feet. “i thought we could hang out?”
that definitely wasn’t what mutsu was expecting. “hang out?” she echoes.
kagura nods. “hang out!”
-
runaway child or not, the kaientai has a strict schedule they need to adhere to and don’t have time to drop off a little girl on earth. the earliest they can do so is in ten days, and while kagura says she’s fine with that, tatsuma is not.
“kintoki will be upset!” he points out.
“the fact that you call him kintoki tells me you don’t care all that much about whether of not he is upset.”
she would send the captain to make the delivery, but something tells her that setting him loose in edo would only result in a week of drinking and partying. and if not that, she imagines kagura would just bully tatsuma into letting her have her way.
mutsu considers the deliveries and pick-ups they’ll be doing soon and then the costs of lugging around a fourteen-year-old yato. she almost smiles when she considers the impact kagura will make on their provisions.
she turns to kagura after removing any mask of amusement.
“this isn’t some luxury ship,” mutsu states, “so you’d best not expect any five star accommodation.”
kagura picks her nose as she explains that she sleeps in a closet.
-
despite kagura’s initial request, mutsu isn’t particularly inclined to “hang out.” she continues on with her day, working and working and working, and not once considering the girl.
when mutsu was fourteen, she was looking after a ship. there were other powers that did a lot of important work, but she was always kept in the loop. she was welcome to join in the work just as she was allowed to roam free. she supposed that allowing kagura that same independence would have been the best way of getting her out of the way, but instead kagura makes her presence known.
“vice-captain,” one divisional manager begins when he calls her. “there appears to be a strange girl running lose in the loading bay. she’s been moving around crates to make a castle because she is now the apparent queen of the kaientai?”
mutsu sighs. “tell her that the highest power on this ship is the captain. after that is the vice-captain.”
“uh. sure.”
mutsu doesn’t even make an hour before she gets another call, this time from the head of the kitchens, explaining that the monster from yesterday has returned to ravage their supplies.
soon after that, the guards tell her that a little girl has been running around and asking where they store their sukonbu.
-
mutsu decides that the best way to manage kagura is to keep her at her side. mutsu continues on with her task, always looking back to make sure kagura is following her whenever they make any moves.
“neechan, this is boring,” kagura complains.
“work often is.”
kagura snorts. “not my work!”
admittedly, that piques mutsu’s curiosity. she knows about gintoki’s odd jobs business and has certainly requested their assistance on more than one occasion, but she’s always wondered what other kinds of work they received.
“and what is your work exactly, kagura?”
her eyes widen at the question and it occurs to mutsu she hasn’t really shown that much interest in the girl despite her own clear admiration.
“lots of things!” kagura replies. “delivering packages for terrorists, warding off fake ghosts, punching down hornet’s nests.” she waves a hand, her grin smug and excited. “you know, the usual.”
-
tatsuma insists mutsu just take some time off for now and spend time with kagura since she rarely meets anyone of her race. he says so freely, not quite considering that kagura is sitting at the other end of the table gnawing on another dish.
“she’s kind of...” tatsuma considers the right word. “adorable.”
mutsu looks at kagura’s sauce-smeared face and wonders if he needs his eyes checked. “adorable?”
“or something.”
kagura rubs her bloated belly and demanding someone roll her back to her room. she calls for “pachi” before pausing and remembering where she is. she stands on her own, yawning and stretching and then waving at them and saying she’s calling it a night.
mutsu watches her leave. “or something indeed.”
-
“how come you don’t carry an umbrella?” kagura asks, prodding mutsu with her own.
“i’ve never had one,” mutsu admits, swatting it away.
“but what about the sun?”
“i generally avoid it.”
“but what if you can’t?”
“my hat is sufficient.”
“but what about kicking people’s butts?”
mutsu cracks a small smile. “surely you know i don’t need a weaponized umbrella to win a battle?”
kagura grins in turn, albeit a little wider. “i knew you were super strong, neechan!”
-
while most yato are prone to using their fists and swinging around their umbrellas, those umbrellas are also weaponized and use their own special sort of bullets. mutsu doesn’t carry around an umbrella, but she does have her own firearm.
she has a collection, actually, and judging by kagura’s silence, she’s positively enamoured by it.
“come,” mutsu says, grabbing the one that shoots laser beams. they walk over to the shooting range and mutsu holds the gun before her. she takes aim, she shoots, and behind her kagura is making little noises of excitement with every blast of green that takes down a target.
after a minute, mutsu glances over her shoulder.
“would you like to try?” she offers.
“yes!”
she hands the girl the gun and kagura tries to replicate the position mutsu had been in. this gun is different than what she’s used to, shorter and probably a lot lighter too, so mutsu adjusts her stance and her arms and then tells kagura to fire.
the eruption of green light has kagura cheering. after one shot, she turns to mutsu and grins.
“i want one of these,” she declares. “i can have this, yes?”
mutsu imagines it must be frowned upon to give a weapon to a child, but then she remembers what they are and knows that kagura’s fists could do much for damage. she rests a hand on kagura’s head and agrees.
-
mutsu is an only child, tatsuma knows. he considers that her father, pirate that he was, may have left a handful of bastards around the galaxy, but mutsu grew up alone and that much he is certain of. that said, he thinks she handles the little yato girl with ease.
when he points this out in private, mutsu shrugs.
“i apply the same principles as when dealing with a potential client.”
“right.”
mutsu doesn’t like his tone, he understands, based on the way her lips thin.
“what?” she bites out.
“i didn’t say anything!”
“you were going to.”
tatsuma shrugs. “you’re good with her,” he says simply enough.
mutsu raises an eyebrow. “you’ve already said that.”
“did i?” tatsuma laughs because he doesn’t want to elaborate. “relax, mutsu,” he says, placing a hand on her shoulder. he smiles. “there’s nothing wrong with admitting that you actually do want to--” he pauses, tapping his chin. “how did she put it? ah, yes. hang out.”
-
one night kagura insists on sleeping in mutsu’s room. she brings along snacks that are apparently for midnight and drops her futon on the floor with a thud. she arranges it in one sliver of space as mutsu stares at her, shocked into silence by her audacity.
“i have work to do, kagura.”
“work?” kagura scoffs. “it’s bedtime, neechan. why are you working?”
“i have a company to run.”
“but that’s boring!”
“have you ever considered your future aspirations, kagura?”
“huh?”
“what do you want to be when you grow up?” the question is odd and childish but there’s a light of wonder in kagura’s eyes. the girl bites her lip and looks shy despite all mutsu knows her to be.
“i’m going to be the best alien hunter in the universe,” kagura declares.
mutsu cracks a smile, because she knows the man that title currently belongs to.
“i’m going to travel the galaxy and i’m going to be beat that stupid baldy off his throne of the strongest!”
“baldy?”
“papi,” kagura says with a nod.
“papi?” mutsu echoes, because that did nothing to clarify.
“my dad,” kagura explains, “is an alien buster.” she grimaces, crossing her arms and seeming more inconvenienced than proud. “and for whatever reason, people consider him to be the best.”
kagura busies herself opening their midnight snack an hour and a half too early. mutsu considers her own father who expected her to inherit his ruthlessness and their family business. would she have ever met tatsuma? would she ever have come across all these gems she called her comrades? would she ever have met this strange yato girl?
“anyway, that’s one idea,” kagura says, her words garbled by the food in her mouth. “i’ve also considered taking over the yorozuya when gin-chan kicks the can.”
-
kagura insists on creating a delicacy she learned down on earth and so mutsu lets her go to the kitchens (she’d been banned after threatening some staff for “hiding their sukonbu stash”). kagura comes back shortly with two bowls of rice and another bowl of something else. she sets mutsu’s rice before her and then cracks an egg, letting its contents fall over the grains. she does the same for herself and then claps.
“time to eat!” kagura yells, immediately digging in.
mutsu just blinks, taking in the simple meal.
“what is this?” mutsu asks.
“egg on rice!”
“yes. literally.”
kagura nods and explains that she and gin-chan eat this all the time and it’s one of her favourite things, although she also likes ramen and barbecue and gin-chan says that she can eat sushi on her birthday.
when she notices mutsu only staring at her dinner, kagura pauses. “is--” she swallows and then bites her lip. “do you not like it?” her cheeks turn pink. “i can eat it for you, if you don’t want it--”
“no.” mutsu reaches across the table and rests a hand on kagura’s head. she doesn’t ever recall being on the receiving end on this sort of affection, but something inside of her tells her she needs to reassure this kind young girl. mutsu draws her hand back and picks up her chopsticks.
she takes her first bite, not unaware of the way kagura’s eyes follow her motions. she smiles and kagura smiles back.
“it’s delicious.”
-
tatsuma is in the middle of his morning coffee when mutsu makes it to his side. she’s always been shorter, but today she seems even more so. tatsuma does a double take and after a moment, he realizes that this isn’t mutsu at all. instead, kagura wears a similar woven hat and a cloak of burgundy.
he smiles and he laughs, throwing his head back and clutching his belly.
“oh man,” he chokes out. “well aren’t you precious?”
“enough of your prattle, captain,” kagura replies in a low voice that isn’t quite her own. she rips the tablet with the day’s schedule out of his hands and reads it as if it means anything to her. “ah, yes, work and stuff.”
tatsuma crosses his arms, deciding to play along. “what are the plans for today, mini-mutsu?”
kagura wears the face of annoyed vice-captain quite well. “business as usual,” she replies. “although today we shall--”
she cries out, whiny and childish, and when tatsuma looks back at her, mutsu is there, a disapproving frown replacing her usual headwear.
“ah, mutsu!” tatsuma greets. “i’d like you to meet your replacement.”
kagura giggles and tatsuma joins her.
“funny,” mutsu intones.
“i’ll be really good at it, neechan!” kagura insists. “it’s simple, yes? just clean up the mess that your curly-haired idiot boss makes. i do that all the time!”
tatsuma’s laughter comes to an abrupt halt. “oi!”
-
“i think she looks up to you.”
mutsu nods because this isn’t really news.
“smart kid,” tatsuma says, “choosing you.”
“oh?”
tatsuma laughs. “well there are a lot of questionable people she surrounds herself with. what if she turned out like zura? or kintoki, hm?”
mutsu just shakes her head and ignores him.
kagura had fallen asleep in her chair in the meeting room almost an hour ago. mutsu had told her to go back to her room and rest, but kagura had insisted that she would wait for neechan to finish her work before leaving. “you work too much,” kagura said after a yawn. “i need to make sure you sleep as well, yes?” and so she waited, curled up in a chair with her eyes fluttering shut every few minutes until she finally dozed off entirely.
while tatsuma hadn’t confirmed that mutsu was a yato until recently, he definitely had his suspicions after a decade of observing her aversion to sunlight and powerful punches. he never pressed the issue though, assuming that it was just something mutsu didn’t want to talk about.
he knows the same stuff about the yato that everyone else does. they are one of the most dangerous races in the entire universe, they’re weakened by the sun and are often found carrying around umbrellas, and that their stomachs are essentially black holes.
and now that her heritage has been confirmed, it’s no surprise to him to see mutsu taking to this girl so easily.
there’s so few of them left that finding one must feel like reuniting with long lost family.
“are you going to miss your mini-me?”
mutsu rolls her eyes, annoyed with the nickname he’d given kagura after the dress up fiasco. “i have no time for sentiment,” she mutters.
“hm? well i will sure miss her.”
“you wanted to send her home the moment you realized she’d stowed away on this ship.” mutsu narrows her eyes at him. “or perhaps you just wanted to go down to edo to visit your usual haunts?”
tatsuma laughs, leaning back into his chair.  “now, now, mutsu. i’m a responsible adult now, remember?”
“right.”
despite how much he did want to bring kagura back, certain that kintoki was probably freaking out over his missing daughter, tatsuma is glad mutsu steered him away from the idea. perhaps she wanted to spend time with kagura, perhaps she just wanted to stay on schedule -- it didn’t matter. tatsuma smiles, glad with the end result: mutsu got to spend time with this little yato girl.
“she really likes you, mutsu.”
“yes.”
“and,” tatsuma continues, “i think you really like her too.”
mutsu busies herself with scanning the inventory log she’s been reading between adjusting kagura’s head so her neck wouldn’t hurt when she woke up and wiping away the girl’s drool. he thinks he sees a ghost of a smile when mutsu replies that she thinks he might be right.
-
the next day, mutsu joins him on the bridge as they set course for earth.
“what if,” mutsu begins slowly, “we just...don’t bring her back.”
tatsuma rubs the back of his neck. “i’m pretty sure that’s considered kidnapping.”
“she came with us on her own volition.”
“i’m pretty sure that’s still considered kidnapping.”
mutsu’s brow furrows and tatsuma recognizes that she’s displeased with his answer. “under whose jurisdiction?” mutsu continues. “the laws of edo don’t apply to this ship, much less this galaxy.”
tatsuma shakes his head. “why don’t you just admit that you enjoy having her around,” he suggests. “that you actually do want to hang out.”
”hmph.”
-
on their last day together, kagura tells mutsu she wants to show her the castle she’d made. mutsu dreads every step she takes closer and closer to a haphazard pile of boxes in the corner of loading bay, but when kagura announces that they’ve arrived, mutsu sighs.
"welcome to my humble abode!” kagura says. “please be sure to bow down to the queen of the kaientai.”
“the queen of the kaientai?”
kagura grins. “me.”
mutsu sighs. “you are not the queen of the kaientai, kagura.”
“how dare you!”
“and didn’t i tell you not to move the boxes around? we have a strict inventory--”
“the manager said i could use these boxes!” she promises. “he said they just had the 500 million yen bags in them, but that neechan said they were worthless so i should be allowed to play with them!”
mutsu purses her lips. “fair enough.”
-
later that night, mutsu decides to take a break and after a stop at the kitchens, she walks over to kagura’s room. she walks by tatusma along the way, catching his knowing grin and ignoring it. when she makes it in front of kagura’s door, she knocks softly.
there’s no response and for a moment, mutsu thinks the girl might already be asleep. but the door soon opens, kagura dressed in her bunny print pyjamas and a piece of sukonbu hanging from her lips.
“neechan?” kagura blinks. “don’t you have to do work?”
mutsu smiles. “i’m taking a break. may i come in?”
kagura steps to the side and mutsu steps inside. she puts down the items she’d taken from the kitchen and her grin widens when she hears kagura’s excited cheer.
“rice!” she yells as she claps. “and...eggs?” she blinks before understanding.
“i enjoyed your cooking,” mutsu tells her. she picks up one of the eggs and cracks it on the edge of the bowl. “i thought i would try making it for you this time.”
they eat, chatting about all the different planets mutsu has been to and all the places kagura will visit when she gets older. kagura tells her about the jobs she’s been on lately while mutsu shares tales of the kinds of business people they’ve come across. they chat about everything, both laying on kagura’s bed, rubbing their stuffed stomachs and staring at the ceiling as they talk.
kagura falls asleep first, her head lolling to the side and resting against mutsu’s shoulder. mutsu closes her eyes too, content.
-
as their ship pulls into the dock, mutsu spots the yorozuya waiting. the dog runs around excitedly while the glasses boy tries to get a hold of him. gintoki leans against a crate, trying to appear at ease, but mutsu can see his tension from afar. it’s only been ten days, but mutsu assumes they must have missed kagura very much.
considering that kagura will now be leaving their ship, mutsu realizes she’ll be missing her as well.
“thanks for the gun,” kagura says. “i’ll keep it forever, neechan. i can’t wait to show it to pachi!”
“don’t shoot him.”
kagura opens her mouth, ready to fight her on that request, but then she sighs. “fine, fine, i’ll save that for sadist then, yes?”
mutsu doesn’t know what she’s talking about so she says that should be fine.
mutsu walks with kagura down to the loading bay doors where she might exit and return to the family she built on earth. what a special girl, mutsu thinks, to be able to find kin on earth and in space. she’ll miss kagura, she can admit to herself. she’ll miss the companionship, the mischievous laughter, the way she looked at her like she was her hero.
when they exit the ship, the dog barks and begins running towards them.
“thanks, neechan,” kagura says, a wide grin stretching across her face. “i had a lot of fun with you.”
mutsu nods and admits, “i as well. i--” she wants to laugh at the words coming to her mind. “i enjoyed...hanging out.”
kagura giggle and then wraps her arms around mutsu’s middle. mutsu isn’t used to physical affection, the extent of it only ever really coming from tatsuma if anyone. her arms hang awkwardly at her sides while kagura just holds her tighter, crushing her in her grip.
“what are you doing?” mutsu asks.
“i’m hugging you,” kagura replies.
“why are you hugging me?”
kagura lifts her head, her brow furrowed as she looks at mutsu as if she’s crazy.
“because i’ll miss you.” kagura eventually pulls away and steps backwards, ready to return to her family here on earth. she raises a hand and waves. “i’ll see you next time! we’ll hang out again, yes?”
“yes,” mutsu promises, “we will.”

ask anything: TELL ME ABOUT TOHOKU! I was never that far north and I'm curious!
TOHOKU IS SUPER NICE.  I live in Ishinomaki, it’s a coastal city that like… sprawls forever and merged a billion smaller townships around.  The nearest big city is Sendai, which is an hour away and I love visiting.  I’ve also spent a lot of time in Shiogama, which is smaller and also a coastal town and has an awesome fish market.  These towns were hit hard by the tsunami and are still under construction in some areas.
Sight-seeing, we have Matsushima, billed as one of the three most beautiful places in Japan.  It’s a bay full of lots of tiny islands, one is a giant botanical garden, and you can take a ferry tour through the bay, which is super fun.
From my town, you can take the ferry to Tashirojima, which is also known as a cat island.  I went there in the spring before tourist season and it was creepy as hell.  I saw like… 5 actual human beings and a fuckton of cats and the town was like practically abandoned.  I don’t recommend going to Tashiro.  WHAT I DO RECOMMEND is staying on that ferry to the next stop for Ajishima.  Ajishima is a cute little island hamlet with trails you can hike all over and a beach you can swim at.  It’s v. nice and also very quiet.
I went sight-seeing in Aomori prefecture at the beginning of October.  I stayed in Mutsu and visited Osorezan and went hiking at Yagen river valley for leaves and that was fun and pretty. :D Also made me mad I didn’t get to keep my original placement that far north, because I really liked it up there. (I got moved to the Sendai branch of my company at the last minute before coming here.)
I have never been south of Tokyo.
