« If we’re putting out something positive about Democrats, it’s both more interesting and more persuasive to voters if we remember to say, ‘and Republicans stand for the opposite’. It’s so obvious but it really requires intentionality and that ball is often dropped. Those are the two low-hanging fruit things that if we get some attention, let’s not waste our attention by misfiring. »
— Adam Green, co-founder of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee (PCCC), quoted at The Guardian.
It's not enough to tell voters that inflation has fallen and that unemployment is close to historical lows. We need to get the message out that Trump would derail the recovery.
Trump's horribly botched handling of the outbreak of COVID-19 not only cost hundreds of thousands of lives sent the economy into recession in 2020.
That Guardian article by David Smith points out..
The PCCC’s research shows that Democrats can drive a contrast over taxing the wealthy to boost social security. The statement “Billionaires and other wealthy Americans should have to pay social security taxes at the same rate as other Americans” has support from 79% of independent voters. Furthermore, the assertion that “Democrats support increasing taxes on billionaires and support increasing funding for programs like social security” gives the party an 11-percentage point lead. While adding a second sentence – “Republicans are pushing to cut taxes on billionaires and are pushing to cut funding for programs like social security” – doubles the advantage to 22 percentage points.
Don't wait for ads or speeches to describe the gap in Social Security taxes to people who are unaware of it. If filthy rich billionaires paid their fair share we wouldn't be hearing talk about Social Security going bankrupt.
Over Thanksgiving, don't let your blowhard MAGA uncle spew crap about the economy.
The truth is that all US recessions except one since the Korean War began under Republican administrations. That includes the Great Recession started under George W. Bush (it was his second recession).

The Pointlessness of the SAG Strike 2023
In recent weeks, the entertainment industry has been rocked by news of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) strike in 2023. While the actors involved in the strike have their reasons and concerns, it's essential to critically examine whether this strike is truly necessary or if it might be, in fact, quite pointless.
Economic Impact: One of the most immediate consequences of the SAG strike is the significant economic impact it has on the industry. Thousands of jobs, from actors to crew members, are being affected. Production companies are losing millions of dollars every day the strike continues. Given the economic hardships that many people have faced in recent times, including the COVID-19 pandemic, one must question the wisdom of causing further financial strain on the industry and its workers.
Demands and Priorities: The demands put forth by the striking actors are not unreasonable. However, one could argue that these demands might not be the top priority in a world grappling with more pressing issues. With global crises like climate change, social justice, and healthcare disparities, is a higher salary for already well-paid actors truly the most critical concern? Many people struggle to make ends meet, and it's hard to sympathize fully with actors making exorbitant salaries, especially when so many others are struggling.
Timing: The timing of the SAG strike is questionable, at best. It's happening in an era when the industry is still recovering from the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Many people in the entertainment business are just getting back on their feet after months of uncertainty and unemployment. Striking now seems insensitive to the plight of others in the industry.
Alternative Solutions: Are strikes the only way to resolve disputes and negotiate better terms? In an industry that thrives on creativity and innovation, one would hope for more imaginative and collaborative solutions. Negotiation and dialogue could lead to more mutually beneficial outcomes without causing widespread disruption and financial loss.
Public Perception: Lastly, it's worth considering the public perception of the strike. In an age where people are increasingly disillusioned with celebrities and their lavish lifestyles, a strike like this may only further alienate the audience. The entertainment industry depends on the support and admiration of the public, and a strike that seems self-serving could harm its reputation.
In conclusion, while the actors participating in the SAG strike 2023 may have legitimate concerns, it's crucial to weigh the impact of their actions on the broader industry and society as a whole. In a world facing numerous pressing issues, this strike may indeed appear pointless to many, given its economic consequences and the perceived priorities of those involved. Perhaps there are more constructive ways to address the concerns of actors and create a fairer and more equitable entertainment industry.

Nursing home owners drained cash while residents deteriorated, state filings suggest
https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2023/01/31/1139783599/new-york-nursing-home-owners-drained-cash?sc=18&f=1001
From the article:
The decrepit conditions Sample described weren't due to a lack of money. Over seven years, The Villages of Orleans Health & Rehabilitation Center, located in western New York near Lake Ontario, paid nearly $16 million in rent to its landlord — a company that was owned by the same investors who owned the nursing home, court records show. From those coffers, the owners paid themselves and family members nearly $10 million, while residents injured themselves falling, developed bedsores, missed medications, and stewed in their urine and feces because of a shortage of aides, New York authorities allege.
At the height of the pandemic, lavish payments flowed into real estate, management, and staffing companies financially linked to nursing home owners throughout New York, which requires facilities to file the nation's most detailed financial reports. Nearly half the state's 600-plus nursing homes hired companies run or controlled by their owners, frequently paying them well above the cost of services, a KHN analysis found, while the federal government was giving the facilities hundreds of millions in fiscal relief.
In 2020, these affiliated corporations collectively amassed profits of $269 million, yielding average margins of 27%, while the nursing homes that hired them were strained by staff shortages, harrowing injuries, and mounting deaths from COVID-19, state records reveal.
"Even during the worst year of New York's pandemic, when homes were desperately short of staffing and their residents were dying by the thousands, some owners managed to come out millions of dollars ahead," said Bill Hammond, a senior fellow at the Empire Center for Public Policy, a think tank in Albany, New York.

tw: feeling in love?, dating, physical affection
So... last summer i realized i'm arospec and that's why I've always felt strange with the idea of a (romantic) relationship. I've had romantic relationships and it's always ended bad. I see myself in that situations and i notice that i was not being real and genuine. I pretended a lot of things just to please the other person (im a ppl pleaser sometimes too) and also i forced myself to believe that it was what i wanted to have. BUT! something i've have noticed is that the only person i've ever really like *that* much and wanted to be so close with is *this girl*.
We met five months before the pandemic explotes, but we started to *going out/being in a relationship(?* three months before that. I felt an incredible connection with her, we've experimented kind of the same struggles throughout our lifes, we have a lot of interests in common and ufff a lot of things, we kind of understand each other in so many ways. And also she's the only asespec person i know, with her i discovered that i'm asespec too. Our magnetism and want to be near was really incredible and felt magical. We were *dating/going out/idk?* all the summer and then POW! Covid arrived and our relationship just got infected too. We were just starting to meet each other, to exist in this kind of partnership or something like that and we didn't have the enough idk strength or basis to front all what this pandemic has affected us. We've had a real rollercoaster in our relationship, we have split out and back together once-ish, we have take a break of each other and then get back in touch, we have talk only by emails, etc.
Last tuesday i met with her just to talk after a long travel i took out of the city, but it turned out with us just being us: just wanting to hug, cuddle and be near to each other. We didn't plan that. It just happened and now we're kind of *together* again(? But I feel that the thing that its different this time is that now i know i don't really want a romantic relationship. Knowing i'm arospec has help me a lot and even tho i've talk a little bit abt with her, I feel that she doesnt fully understand it. These days we're not seeing each other bcs possibly i have covid but i've been thinking a lot abt what is our connection? i know we have never wanted to have a *normative* relationship, that's why we used to called it a companionship in the beginning. i've been thinking abt what is a queer platonic relationship? does this kind of closeness enters in the definition? (and im questioning this bcs i dont want to misunderstood it) does a qpr just means to break the rules of romantic-platonic binarism? and most important of all... what if i propose to her to have a qpr and she doesnt want it?
I want we to be part of each other's life but i don't want to have a romantic relationship. I know i have to communicate this to her, but im also scared. I want to keep in touch, to keep going to concerts and art events together, to still have our incredible closeness, to see each other at least once a week and hug a lot and be cute together. It's difficult but i know i have to do it.

« Isn't it past your jail time? »
— Host Jimmy Kimmel responding live to adjudicated sex offender Donald Trump's Truth Social post during the 2024 Oscar Awards. From Entertainment Weekly.
You would think Trump had better things to do than critique the Oscars.
In February of 2020 the COVID-19 virus was already spreading across the US despite President Trump's January 22nd assurances on CNBC that, "we have it totally under control". Instead of trying to deal with a potential public health disaster, Trump was ranting about Parasite being chosen as best picture that year.
Trump Mocks ‘Parasite’ Best Picture Win: ‘What the Hell Was That All About?’
Jimmy Kimmel will probably have a more detailed response once he's back on his late night show.

Back in November and December 2020, I used to work as a seasonal sales associate at a Jewellery store (my last sales job) in a mall near my previous apartment. Because it was during pandemic time, the mall was a ghost town and the mall's music didn't have enough customers to entertain, so it would mainly entertain the sales associates in the mall's stores instead. The mall would have Christmas music playing all day everyday and now I can't hear All I Want for Christmas Is You without thinking of the view of the mall from that store.
In my head, 'last Christmas' refers to Christmas 2020. Christmas 2021 was spent with yours beloved only and a snack box sent by my (now previous) corporate company. Although it was a peaceful Christmas and I wouldn't want it another way, December 2020 was indeed another realm of reality: snow, jewels, mariah carey, a new aritzia coat and mango diamond slushes.

By the time she got home, Sánchez feared that she had come down with more than post-fest exhaustion. “I got tested a couple days later, and it was positive for COVID-19,” she said. “I wish I wore a mask for at least part of the weekend.”
She’s not alone. Reports from the Coachella Valley’s nine cities said cases spiked 77% after the festival’s first weekend, likely driven by the new Omicron subvariant BA.2. More new coronavirus cases likely went unreported, due to the preponderance of at-home testing. Sister festival Stagecoach, with country headliners Thomas Rhett, Carrie Underwood and Luke Combs, returns to the Empire Polo Club this weekend.
While fans have waited two years to fully cut loose at clubs, arenas and festivals, some acts and public health experts are wondering if it’s too soon to abandon safety measures such as masks and vaccine mandates.
“We can’t just go back to 2019,” said Melanie D. Sabado-Liwag, a professor of public health at Cal State L.A. She’s also a Coachella-goer and occasional EDM DJ by night, and fully understands the allure of a masks-off music gathering. “We have to create a new norm where we assess the environment. Even outdoors, there’s still some risk. You might be walking by someone without a mask who is unvaccinated. You just don’t know.”

EDITORIAL: Taking COVID-19 vaccination seriously amidst 2023 election campaigns
The build-up to the 2023 general elections will witness a sea change as from 28 September, when campaigns will officially begin.
