Dear listener, if you offer me ordinary pop music, I will reflexively kick you in the gonads and book it in the opposite direction. However, if you offer me pop music interlaced with elements of metal, punk, and hip-hop… I’m going to do a double take, carefully examine the melodious product in question, and reassess my conclusions on what the tentative limits are in modern music. As long as you don’t have any issues with strobe lights, smash play on the above track, Demons from the 2012 album Reign of Terror. The featured band this week is Sleigh Bells, who, for over a decade-and-a-half have practiced an overdriven, experimental version of pop which regularly incorporates the fundamentals of digital hardcore, industrial rock, and electro.

After years of personal listenership, I am confident that SB can give you everything you want, and more, from modern pop music. Like most pop tunes, the sound is structured around hooks (the peak-altitude of a song, whether it be the melody, the lyrics, or the repetitive composition of instrumentals) crafted to a sharp, absolute, and prominent apex. I LOVE exploring the catalogs of experimental bands… particularly when you catch me by surprise and show me a pop music product that I can actually immerse myself in. Over the last decade or so, Sleigh Bells has provided me with utter bliss, utter joy, utter pain, and a rough ride filled with ups-and-downs, but most importantly… an overall experience that I want to be a part of! It’s pop music that has the capacity to appeal to everyone, not just teenage girls, because the music manages to have a semblance of * universal meaning*. Their tunes are the very definition of sweet-and-sour chicken, only delivered entirely in an audio format, and dammit all, it tastes mostly sweet! A noise pop duo, based out of Brooklyn, NY, has managed to accomplish within a decade and a half what the rest of you limp-dicked, corporately funded pop music jabronis can’t seem to do; immerse the listener in pop music that *actually innovates* for a change. All over their discography, you can find personally resonant tunes that manage to successfully communicate complex ideas and emotions. If you want pop music with an unapologetic nonconformist twist, immerse yourself in something that sounds different for a change. If you like what you heard above, click below for some work by SB that is laced with slightly more traditional pop elements, Rosary from their 2021 album Texis.

Ten years ago, I thought I liked one song by SB. A year later, I liked two songs by them. The next year, I liked four. The next year, eight. You starting to see a pattern? A decade on, I am flabbergasted at their sniper-rifle range in musical versatility and commitment to providing their audience with an endearing and truly meaningful experience that I would recommend to anyone looking for a potent alternative to mainstream pop. Album Review: Radnor and Lee – Self-titled Album
Radnor and Lee are an indie folk musical duo made up of Josh Radnor, an American actor, filmmaker, author and musician, probably most well known for playing Ted Mosby on CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother and Ben Lee, an Australian indie pop musician and actor, probably most well known for being a member of Sydney based alternative rock outfit Noise Addict, and his subsequent solo career, and for being the protagonist in the 2003 movie, The Rage in Placid Lake. Today, I’ll be reviewing their debut self-titled album, which was released on the 10th November 2017.
‘Be Like The Being’ really shows off Radnor’s vocals, I already knew from years of HIMYM rewatches that he had a pleasant voice, and hearing his soft, warm and heartfelt vocals really ties this song together. I was unfamiliar with Ben Lee before setting out to check out Radnor and Lee, and he adds a lot to this performance, the strong vocal harmonies and the instrumental additions, creating a busy track that gains momentum as the track progresses. It’s got a really nice energy to it and you just get caught up in the frenzied instrumental backing, and the overall melody. Also I’m always partial to a little bit of violin, so thumbs up for that too.

Dear listener, I’ve been in a really dark mood lately, so open your mind REAL WIDE because this week’s music pick is a doozy. It’s kind of hard for me to explain this week’s act, because they’re weird as all shit, but I’ll try my best to summarize. There’s this dark wave group I’ve known for about a decade called Die Form, who were never big mostly because their music is widely deemed too disturbing for the mainstream. Despite being around since the late 1970′s and having a catalog that mostly centers around the spicy subjects of eroticism and death, I’ll bet this is the first time you’ve heard of them. Ain’t it? I’d be surprised if you have, as this performance act from France isn’t exactly as popular as, say, a similar group like Skinny Puppy. DF’s brand of coldwave and neo-classical electronics has always been very memorable to me, if for no other reason than they pushed boundaries in music in bizarre ways. Their tones are VERY dark, boasting unconventional electronic beats and effects that you CAN’T find anywhere else, and backed up since the late 1980′s by the booming and haunting voice of one Éliane P. This tune is by a country mile my favorite track of theirs, Morphosis from the 2006 album ExHuman, which interestingly was a counterpart and sequel to their 2004 album InHuman. It’s highly experimental, it’s kinda goth overall, and many of their latest albums contain less voice and more atmospherics for those who appreciate a little variety. Smash play and go down a rabbit hole that is both dangerous and, in some cases, very taboo, their most extreme topics including subjects like necrophilia... to name just one. This stuff may be too dark for you, or it could just tickle you in your audio no-no place... as it certainly does for me. Get out of that rigid comfort zone and enjoy something different for a change!
