Starslinger Tales by Kras Nebula

Starslinger Tales are a collection of short stories and novellas taking place in a weird west post-apocalyptic setting, hundreds of years after a magical cataclysm destroyed the people who came before. These stories center around the folks who've been surviving since- farmers, mediums, doppelgangers, ghosts. Y'know, regular folk and the dinosaurs they ride, living in the shadows of the ruins the 'Fore Folks left behind.

Each story is written to be self contained, so feel free to start wherever sounds interesting!

'Nobility' is a word that cats in BlizzardClan strive for in reference to themselves, and one that the Keepers embody. Respected cats who have trained especially for their role, Keepers serve various important roles in the Clan, both big and small. Their responsibilities have evolved over time, and as BlizzardClan's needs have changed, but in the modern day they serve three primary roles.

1) Mousekeepers. This is the role that originally gave the Keepers their name. As the weather turns colder in BlizzardClan territory, prey becomes more and more scarce, to the point of no cat being able to catch a single piece of prey for moons on end. This kind of starvation is untenable for survival, and thus Goldenrod, an ancient BlizzardClan cat, founded the role of The Keeper. Keepers maintain a population of mice fenced in at their camp for when the weather turns coldest. These mice act like livestock for the Clan and are culled whenever they grow too multitudinous, or when the Clan is in need of extra feeding.

2) Avalanche Watchers. As Keepers are experienced members of the Clan who are active most in the cold moons to tend to the rodent chattel, they often find themselves returning to regular Warrior duties in the warmer months. As the Clan, usually, has plentiful Warriors, Keepers are asked to take up watch positions on key points in the territory- usually smaller camps set up in high places where they can watch for avalanches. These outposts were once manned by twolegs, but have long since been abandoned. These outposts contain ropes with red flags on them that can be spotted from long distances. Cats on patrol are constantly on the lookout for these banners to ensure they have enough time to react to an oncoming avalanche.

3) Advisor to the Leader. As the Keepers are deeply respected Cats in the Clan, they often act as secondary advisors to the leader, especially Keepers who are older in age. In recent moons, Dovemoon has changed the law so that the Keeper vote counts for two cats rather than the regular one. This works in his favour, as many of the Keepers are staunch supporters of Dovemoon. This part of the Keeper role was added relatively recently, when Dovemoon came to power.
