toph learned both english and mandarin because the beifongs wanted her to learn something other than her mother tongue. but the ppl teaching her english was hella lazy so she didn't learn as much. but she learned the basics like how to say her name, her age, how she's feeling, etc. like she can keep up a decent conversation.

but she has trouble with her pronunciation, plurals, and articles. and SHE DOES NOT ADMIT THAT SHE NEEDS HELP. katara tried helping her with english a few times but toph always denied needing help. sokka & aang also tried to help, but again, toph. then she met zuko, who just happens to be multilingual, speaks to toph in mandarin. and then he does manage to help toph with her english.

and in return, toph teaches the rest of team avatar how to speak mandarin (she taught them how to say swear words and thats it 😭)

IM OBSESSED WITH THIIIIIISSSSS. no you don’t understand this made my evening 😭 esp the last paragraph that’s so Toph it’s visceral. Anyway one of my favourite hcs from you specifically is the languages they speak, idk why but it sits so right with me. also this leaves me under the impression that zuko snuck in English lessons and Toph only realised after he spoke to her in English and she responded way better than she usually would n she’s like: you sneaky son of a bitch

this hc applies to the 90s hc but it can apply any other au. i mentioned this on discord before but this one shall be shared.

zuko, mai, and suki speak japanese due to it being their native language. zuko & mai learned english together but mai was taking a little bit longer to settle in. suki was used to tourists coming around often so she started to pick on some terms.

while they were fluent in english, they still needed help on some stuff and they have sokka being their handy dandy translator. sometimes they still confuse their l's and r's.

they'll see a sentence or a word with way too many l's and they'll just slide it over to sokka. "so you guys can say insults left and right but you can't pronounce alligator???" but he does end up helping them tho.

sokka will let out a little snicker like him and katara don't skip articles like a stone on water. they got shown the word 'phenomenon' and 'onomatopoeia'. they just shut down.

tbh, i could a whole essay on the atla characters and their beef with english 😭

I’m so glad you gave this to the people bc the people deserved this hc. anyway neeed to mention that I can picture Toph watching this bullshit go down, and bc she’s still in her ‘I hate english’ era (real) she doesn’t tell anyone that zuko helped her so when sokka is trying to get Suki or mai to say a word Toph just casually says it perfectly and then sokka is just on her lying ass like: YOU REFUSED TO LEARN?? I THOUGHT YOU HATED ENGLISH??

and Toph is just like: it’s an easy word 🤷

ANOTHER 90s AU HC (or any au): sokka learned english first then inuktitut second while katara learned inuktitut first & English second. but katara didn't learn English until she was eleven because kya died before she could really break it down for her and hakoda left before he could teach her at least the basics. and gran gran spoke little English. so sokka had to teach her.

ADDING ONTO MY SOKKA SINGING HC

sokka can and will sing in multiple languages without even knowing said language. you play a song he fucks with and it just happens to be in a different language, he will sing it with no hesitation. but if you ask him if he can speak said language, he scratches his head 😭

i like to imagine it was a contest he had to participate in and sokka sang the spanish version of irreplaceable. everybody is like "WTF WHERE DID HE LEARN SPANISH" not knowing that he can't speak a lick of it via conversation.

meanwhile zuko, the fucking multilingual king, is in the crowd like "who hurt him?"

ik it's been like idk a month since the sokka singing hc. so this is kinda random. but i feel like sokka would have a silky smooth singing voice. but at the same time, his voice is strong. something like daniel ceaser but like a little bit higher.

singing runs like track in the family so basically sokka and katara got their voices passed down from the family. and when katara and sokka sing TOGETHER? it's like magic. their voices go so well together but katara doesn't like singing in front of people, and sokka plays too much.

i imagine sokka and katara cleaning up. a song plays that they love, and they start mumbling singing at first. but then they start feeling it and they just get into it. while they're singing, zuko just steps in. bc not only can his bf can sing, but his sister can too. so he just stands there in awe. and sokka and katara notices him so they just stop and pretend like nothing happened.

ITS BEEN LIKE MORE THAN A MONTH IM SO SORRY POOKIE BUT!!! This is so amazing incredible I’m actually crying. shuhudhideaiun you’re so sweet thank you and of COURSE I do but like. I also would like to list my favourites and originals bc some of them are so so adorable n fun.

Unconventional

-sokka fidgets. like a lot. but the way he does is by biting his nails so zuko bought him beads and necklaces and just jewellery in general so he could play with that instead of destroying his fingers.

-zuko has like no spacial awareness at all (he’s literally blind in one eye) so sokka always has a hand on his back or arm to make sure he doesn’t crash into anything 😭

-zuko has trouble staying on top of his work and is constantly complaining about needing a clearer schedule so sokka just, invents highlighters and comes to zuko one day like: here you go babe now you can colour code your schedule 😊 and zuko’s like: what the fuck

-one by my wonderful friend @motheryves: sokka can sing but pretends to sing badly in front of his friends to annoy them

-another one by my friend @kiki-strike: a long post which you can find if you scroll through my ask tag about zuko’s relationship with his scar and how sokka finds a way to be tender and gentle with him (like, touching it) without freaking him out. (seriously this is such a tender sweet head canon and I still think about it to this day.

-not sure where it came from but the hc that sokka and zuko can’t take showers together because one setting is in the pits of hades and the other is the literal icy tundras.

Original, but less odd

-sokka is a sleep wrestler and at first zuko thinks it’s because he’s just. like that. but after sokka starts talking in his sleep about ‘I need to save them.’ ‘I’m strong enough.’ then zuko’s like: oh. oh his failure complex is on even in his sleep. so next time it happens he wordlessly just pulls sokka close and strokes his hair until he’s still. (it takes Sokka a few weeks to figure out why he’s suddenly sleeping so well.)

-the first time sokka says I love you is when they’re lounging in zuko’s chambers and it’s late there’s dim candlelight and zuko is laughing at something stupid sokka said. so sokka tries to say I love you but gets whacked in the face with a bottle (zuko flails) so when he gets to the sick bay and zuko is tending to his bruise saying shit like ‘I’m so dumb I’m so sorry’ sokka just, blurts it out. (a true display of zuko being authentic zuko, not hiding behind a cold unfeeling mask, but always looking out for others and caring for them. that’s the zuko who sokka loves, so he told him then.)

-the first time zuko says I love you is when sokka is painting, and he comes over to bring him tea and sokka gets startled and just, spills his tea all over himself and his painting and he stands up too quickly to get a towel so he slips on the spilled tea on the floor and now he’s ass first on the ground just laughing, wide and unapologetic and that’s when zuko says it. (a true display of sokka being authentic sokka, not trying to prove his worth or be more of a man or be anything other than himself. that’s the sokka that zuko loves, so he told him then.)
