#more good dad jake in universe will come
Text
Things My Dad Says That Modern AU No War Jake Sully Would Also Say:
Jake Sully is canonically a skxawng. But he’s also a little bit smooth with it, and I think he’d do it a little bit on purpose to make Neytiri and also the kids laugh.
-Neytiri and Tuk (also Spider) are the ones who will always laugh at his insane jokes. Neytiri especially. Like she always laughs. They’ve been married for like twenty years now and she’s still laughing like what he said was a surprise. Kiri and Lo’ak are NOT LAUGHING it’s NOT FUNNY shut the fuck up, Dad, oh my god.
-Jake when Neytiri comes home from work: Neytiri, come here, let’s kiss in front of the kids and make them uncomfortable.
-Every time they stop to get gas on a road trip and they go into the rest stop to pee while Neytiri fills the car, Jake says “Guys, don’t worry, this definitely won’t be the time she decides she can do better and just gets in the car and finally leaves us here.”
-Jake, every time Neytiri is sick: Make sure you pick the right last words for your mother in case she doesn’t wake up.
Lo’ak, always refuses to laugh at Jake’s shit: Oh really, what are your last words?
Jake, in the middle of making Neytiri tea for her sore throat: Goodbye, asshole.
Neytiri: *laughing so hard it turns into coughs*
-Every time Jake buys groceries like the good retired-veteran-stay-at-home-husband he is, he sends Neytiri a picture of the flowers and says he didn’t buy them because he knows she’d rather spend the money on the kids, and it’s their shared money anyway. He’s joking and it’s supposed to make her laugh, but she knows he’s also serious. They have five kids including latchkey child Spider, and do have to pay attention to every penny. On her birthday and on Valentine’s Day, he actually buys the flowers and presents them to her and says he scrounged the money up from behind Lo’ak’s bed. (Lo’ak: HEY!) It makes her laugh every time. It’s their cute little thing, it means he’s thinking of her every time he goes to the store even if he doesn’t spend the money every time. (Lo’ak: those are my flowers then.)
-Jake, pointing at the screen every time they watch any movie: That’s actually how me and your mother met.
It was most egregious when they were watching Titanic.
Lo’ak, confrontational: Oh really? You’re dead dad? And mom is like 90 years old?
Jake: Oh my god, Lo’ak, you never comment on a woman's age.
Neytiri: *hysterical laughter from the kitchen*
-Sometimes Lo’ak will forget something he needs for school and sprint back into the house to go back for it, and every time Jake and Neytiri are sitting at the kitchen table finishing their breakfast watching him and Jake goes “How can we miss you if you just won’t leave?” Neteyam copies Jake a lot and he says that shit all the time when Lo’ak, Kiri, or Spider forget something, they hate it (secretly love it).
-Kiri, complaining about what a kid did at school: -and then she told the teacher I didn’t do any of the work. Isn’t that crazy?
Jake, nodding sagely: Mhm. Do you want me to go fight her?
Neytiri: *surprised laughter*
Kiri, trying not to laugh: *deep sigh* You can’t fight a teenage girl, Dad.
Jake, pretend hurt: You think I can’t beat a teenage girl?
-Neytiri works at the hospital with Ronal. Ronal is a doctor and Neytiri is a nurse. Jake likes to put on episodes of Grey’s Anatomy and then tell Neytiri they could’ve used a better nurse during almost every scene.
-When the Sully’s and Tonowari’s family have their first big family dinner after Lo’ak and Tsireya start dating, Jake comes down the stairs in his underwear and his stained marines t-shirt and says “I’M READY TO GO!’ and Tuk and Neytiri die laughing while Lo’ak has an aneurysm.

SPOILERS!!! REFERENCES AND EASTER EGGS IN F&C ep. 10: CHEERS
The finale!
Tumblr media
Pawn Swan! This was another character who first appeared in Steve Wolfhard's post-finale loredump about the 1000+ world. I never expected to actually see him in the show.
Tumblr media
Nuts how this is like the third time we've seen Simon's ass. I love how Shermy is just chilling and playing video games while GOLB lets this random old man take a turn at the wheel.
Tumblr media
This establishing shot of Fionnaworld shows that it's very small. By the time it is restored at the end of the episode, this ominous white border is gone and there are more buildings, implying that it became a complete world.
Tumblr media
I can't believe Gary was thirsting after Scarab in this situation.
Tumblr media
There is a shop called Evergree Flowers; likely a reference to the episode Evergreen.
Tumblr media
This shop window advertises that you can learn to kick bugs. Appropriately enough, Cake kicks Scarab through this shop window while in her Godzilla form.
Tumblr media
The Betty statue has become GOLBetty.
Tumblr media
It should be clear by this point that Casper and Nova are a parallel to Simon and Betty, with all of their decisions being made by Casper with little consideration for Nova due to their unbalanced power dynamic. This is why Simon realises that he should have been more considerate of Betty's dreams, rather than single-mindedly chasing the Enchiridion and the crown.
Tumblr media
The credits confirm that genderswapped Ash is named Ashley. I wonder what happened to her after she fell into the void. Probably nothing good.
Tumblr media
Poor Marshall never gets to finish his songs. Truly he is the genderswapped Marceline.
Tumblr media
The name "GOLBetty" is now canon; Simon uses it in this scene.
Tumblr media
I'm not sure what's happening to GOLBetty here. A loose thread to pick up if this story ever gets a continuation, perhaps.
Tumblr media
Simon steps through several different universes, including all the ones we saw during this miniseries. I'm not sure what this world full of tiny bears is meant to be.
Tumblr media
Some kind of industrial capitalist hell universe.
Tumblr media
This is the Water Park Prank artstyle, implying that Water Park Prank takes place in a separate but canon universe. So Water Park Prank is now canonically canonical! (what a ridiculous phrase)
Tumblr media
Some kind of Jake universe.
Tumblr media
A universe featuring Magwood and his volcano lair, from the episode Evergreen.
Tumblr media
The snail! It's not dead after all. And it's a great way of symbolising a return to regular Ooo, as is the reappearance of the smiley butterfly.
Tumblr media
This was a strange selection of characters. I hope Jay hasn't left his younger siblings on their own if their dad is dead. At least baby Finn won't have to grow up in Vampworld, though part of me liked imagining what that would have been like.
Tumblr media
Fionna mentions that his is her top fantasy. The other two of her top three fantasies were Cake being able to talk and a kingdom made of candy.
Tumblr media
She gets a hammer, like she had in the dream sequence at the very beginning of the miniseries.
Tumblr media
Kheirosiphon goes back to working in a teashop, just like he did on The Drift before he was imprisoned by Scarab. Also Marshall's outfit here is incredibly gay, it's great.
Tumblr media
There is an ad here for a daddy issues themed comedy night. Sounds like Marceline's kind of place.
Tumblr media
Prismo's face glitches for a second. Ominous.
Tumblr media
Simon definitely needs to move out. This is probably an even more important realisation than coming to understand his influence over Betty.
Tumblr media
In the credits of this episode, Simon is finally at peace.
And with that, the miniseries is over! Back to the long wait. Will this be it for Adventure Time? Or is there yet more to come...

the offside rule || j.h.s
Tumblr media
Summary: Jake learns that his girl is crazy about football, but not the kind he expected.
Warnings: jake being a sweetheart, no use of y/n
Word Count: 1.5k
Pairings: Jake Seresin x f!reader
Authors Note: This is inspired by @roosterforme's Sundays Are for the Boys and @teacupsandtopgun's Jake and Flick universe. This is also very self-indulgent and somewhat based on parts of my life.
Tumblr media
“What are you doing?” Jake emerged from the bathroom, only to find his girlfriend on the couch, watching what looked like soccer.
“I’m watching football, what does it look like?” She didn’t take her eyes off the screen as she reached for the beer bottle on the coffee table.
Jake didn’t know how to respond. He knew what soccer was, he wasn’t an idiot but he never knew that his girl enjoyed the sport.
“Soccer, baby. It’s called soccer.”
Jake knew it was the wrong thing to say as she turned around, an unimpressed look on her face.
“I’m going to forgive you this time. But in the future, for your information, it’s called football. Not your ridiculous term soccer.” She was all business, a sharp edge to her tone that Jake hadn’t really experienced in their relationship so far.
There was a sparkle in her eyes that told him she wasn’t as serious as her tone suggested though. Jake flopped down on the couch next to her, plucking the beer out of her hands. “Is this MLS?”
She snorted, rolling her eyes as she looked him up and down. “MLS is a shit league. It only got interesting since Messi signed for Inter Miami and it’s still shit. You know, we call it the retirement league because it’s where all the greats come to wind down and just kick around.”
“Hey!” Jake protested. “Doesn’t it have a somewhat good reputation?”
She shook her head. “Baby, I love you but you’ve been greatly deceived.” She patted his cheek, opening another beer, seeing as he had stolen hers.
Jake grumbled, sinking lower into the couch. Granted, his soccer knowledge was limited but he thought that MLS at least was a popular league.
“What’s this then?” He pointed to the screen where the game was playing.
His girl clapped excitedly, tossing the cap onto the table. “This is the greatest league in the world. I give you the Premier League.” She dramatically spread her arms, as if showing him something of great importance.
In a way, Jake guessed that she was. He had no idea she was this passionate about this but he found it endearing that she did.
“I recognise that, it’s England, yeah?” Jake was 80% certain he was right but he could also be wrong. Like he said, his knowledge of soccer was limited.
“Yes! PL is played in England and it’s hands down the most popular and watched league. But there’s obviously others as well.”
He was a bit intrigued and Jake also wanted to know more about something that made his girl this excited. “Others?”
“Oh, you’ve got La Liga for example, and Ligue 1. And then there’s Serie A and Bundesliga. My dad used to watch a lot of Eredivisie too. He was a lifelong fan of Ajax.” She quieted down a bit at the end, a sad smile on her face as she remembered her dad.
Jake pressed a kiss to her shoulder, hand finding hers. He gave a supportive squeeze. He understood now why this was so important to her.
“Did you guys watch a lot together?” He asked as the game seemingly was paused, the players leaving the field.
“Yeah. He took me to my first game when I was 4. I barely remember it but I remember the feeling. And he coached my team for as long as I played.”
That surprised Jake. “You used to play?” It wasn’t something that had come up but he guessed it was somewhat of a sore subject.
“From the age of five til I was fifteen, maybe sixteen,” she paused. “Uh, I quit playing when he got sick. He wanted me to continue but it just wasn’t the same. It was our thing and then all of a sudden he wasn’t there and..”
Jake pulled her into his arms, lips pressed to her forehead. “Baby, why haven’t you told me about this before? I would have loved to know more about football if I knew it meant this much to you.”
She smiled when he called it football and Jake counted it as a small victory. “I honestly don’t know. You’re more of an American football fan and I just figured you didn’t care about this.”
“I would have cared if you told me. Hell, I know you don’t really care about the Cowboys but you still hang out with me when they play. And wear the jersey.”
She laughed then, leaning back from his embrace but kept their hands intertwined. “I wear the jersey because I know it gets you all hot and bothered.”
“Well, that’s definitely a perk. You do look very good in blue.” Jake kissed her then, hands sneaking under her shirt to trace her skin.
She was blushing when they pulled apart and Jake grinned, proud to be the one to make her that way.
“So is Ajax your team?” He asked, playing with the hem of her shirt.
“No. As much as I respect and enjoy Dutch football, the Premier League always called to me more. And then I fell in love with Manchester United.”
Jake’s eyebrows shot up, teasingly pinching her sides. “Fell in love, huh? That means I got competition?”
She rolled her eyes, pressing a chaste kiss to his lips. “Don’t worry, I won’t leave you for the Red Devils.”
“Good. Is this them then?” He gestured towards the screen, where the game had resumed.
“No, they play Aston Villa tomorrow. This is Newcastle vs Arsenal.”
Jake watched as the team in black and white kicked the ball back and forth. “Okay, you’re going to have to explain this to me. I know nothing.”
She launched into the game, explaining what was happening as well as informing him about the rules and terms. Jake tried his best to keep up but figured he was going to have to do some independent studying to catch up.
If this was important to his girl, it was important to him. He watched as she kept on talking, gesturing back and forth with her hands, eyes alight with excitement.
“But there must be leagues outside of Europe, yeah?” He asked after learning that the ones she had rambled off earlier were all based in European countries.
“For sure, but those are the most popular ones. And considering how much of an impact the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League have, it’s difficult for leagues outside of Europe to compete.”
Jake’s mind was reeling, trying to piece all the information together. “Wait, Europa League and Champions League? Conference? Where’s that?”
“All of those are played by teams in Europe. You qualify for UCL when you win your league in your country, and the second tier goes on to play in the UEL and third tier in UECL.” At Jake’s confused expression, she smiled apologetically.
“Sorry, this is way overboard. How about we keep that for another day and we just keep to the basics for now?”
Jake breathed a sigh of relief. “Yes please.”
She handed him another beer, smiling softly.
“So, do I get a Manchester United jersey? It’s only fair, I got you a Cowboys one.” Jake asked.
He was comfortably leaning back against the armrest of the couch. Initially he had tried to get her to snuggle with him but quickly found out that she wasn’t going to sit still while watching the game.
“Babe, you’ll get a jersey when you deserve one. Maybe earlier if you can explain the offside rule to me.”
He was screwed then. “Never mind. I’ll wait.”
“It’s really not that difficult. A player would be seen as offside if their entire body is in front of the last defender of the opposing team, on the opposing team's half.”
Jake tried to imagine what it would look like but his mind came up blank. “You’re just speaking gibberish, that doesn’t make sense.”
She smiled softly, a gleam in her eye. “Don’t worry, I’ll make you a football fan. Just you wait.”
“I can’t wait. I’m also very excited to see you watch your team play.”
The game was now over and she climbed into his lap, hands finding the back of his head. “Oh, you’re in for a wild ride.”
Making the most of their position, Jake grabbed a hold of her thighs as he stood up, ignoring her squeal as he headed towards the bedroom. “How about I give you a ride right now?”
Tumblr media
Two months later, when Jake officially got the offside rule right, a package was waiting for him on the kitchen table when he got home.
His heart swelled as he pulled out a bright red Manchester United jersey, embroidered with his callsign on the back. There was a note inside the box as well and Jake laughed as he read what his girlfriend had written.
Now you’re a real football fan. Glory glory Man United!
Ps. Come find me ;)
“You’re playing a dangerous game, sweetheart.” He called, jersey in hand as he stalked the house.
Her laughter echoed through the house. “Come claim your prize, cowboy.”

So Funny Story (I'm Fucking Your Daughter)
Funny Story Universe
Pairing: Jake Seresin x Mitchell!Reader
TW: allusions to smut, swearing, angst kind of, I think thats it?
Summary: You've had a thing with Jake for a while now. The thing is, your dad doesn't know and your brother is desperate for you to tell him.
Word Count:3.2k
A/N:if you read this on desktop and the bottom is fucked up, please know ive tried 100 times to fix it and Tumblr hates me
Tumblr media
It was never supposed to go this far, honestly. This whole predicament started out as friends with benefits, and that's how it was meant to stay. Somewhere along the way, the boundaries got muddy and occasional hookups turned into regular sleepovers. Without either of you trying or even realizing it, the relationship blossomed into something more serious.
In the blink of an eye, the blonde aviator became integral to your life. It's really not your fault; falling for him was so effortless. Loving Jake Seresin is as easy as breathing once you get past the arrogant bravado.
There's just one problem. One giant, monumental, bat-shit crazy issue. Your dad Maverick doesn't know. In fact, when you waltzed into town, the first thing that he told the aviators was that you're off limits, especially to Jake Seresin. Mav knows his type because he is his type.
The love em and leave em type that can't be tied down. That's not good enough for his little girl, and he won't allow it.
Ironically, that's how it all began. Telling Jake he can't have something is like dangling candy in front of a child, and you love to push the boundaries and do things to prove a point.
The point being that your dad can't tell you what or who to do. It took all of three weeks to find yourself in the aviator's bed, and you never left. With each day that passes, your anxiety grows, and you know that as you approach your six-month anniversary, you're teetering on hurting Mav when he does find out.
The only person in on the secret is your big brother. Well, he's not technically your brother, but the two of you have been raised together since diapers, even going on to apply to the academy and flight school together. The way he found out was less than ideal.
You and Jake are basking in the afterglow of mind-blowing sex, your naked bodies pressed together as you come back down. You're less than decent with the comforter strewn over your ankles as Jake drips out of you.
Jake's breathless laugh fills the room as his hand rakes through the dark blonde locs your fingers were just tangled in. This has been happening for almost a month now, and you've fallen into a comfortable routine.
You couldn't stop if you wanted to; truth be told, you'd rather pluck out each of your teeth one by one than never feel Jake Seresin on you again. You've found yourself in freefall, plummeting face-first toward love.
You're too wrapped up in each other to notice the heavy footsteps in the hall and you jump as the door bursts open and slams into the wall.
"Hey, Hangman, I was won-"Bradley's thought is cut short as he lets out a shrill scream and rushes to cover his eyes.
"What the fuck?! Y/N, what the hell are you doing?!"
Jake scrambles to cover the two of you up and you shrink into his arms as he wraps you in a protective embrace.
"Well, I'm not doing anything now." You mutter, and Bradley lets out an exaggerated gag.
"No, no, fuck no. Absolutely not. Please tell me this is a one-time thing that's going to the grave." He begs, and your mouth curls up into a sheepish grin.
"I can lie if it'll make you feel better." You offer, and he groans.
"God damn it, Y/N. This is the one thing Mav forbade! And don't even get me started with you, Hangman. You're as good as dead." He peeks through his fingers before snapping them closed again.
"For fucks sake, can the two of you please put on some clothes if we're going to be having a conversation?"
Jake rolls his eyes but moves to slip on a pair of boxers as you grab his shirt and sweatpants.
"We weren't really looking for a conversation, but come on in, I guess."
You give Bradley the okay to look, and he shoots daggers at Jake.
"You're not really in the position to be making smart-ass comments, shit for brains." His voice is sharp, and you snap your fingers at him.
"Hey, watch your mouth. You're the one who came in unannounced. I'm pretty sure that key is for emergencies only."
Bradley looks at you in shock and sputters for a few seconds.
"Wh- you. Are you shitting me right now? You're defending him?" He asks, and you shrug.
"That's what girlfriends do." Your tone is casual, and you can almost see Bradley's heart threatening to explode.
"Girlfriend?! Oh dear god, please strike me down now. Do you think if we put our heads together, we could figure out time travel so I can go back to a simpler time before I knew about this?" He ponders, hands gesturing wildly between you and Jake.
You snort and shake your head at his antics, allowing yourself to settle back into Jake's chest.
"You're telling Mav, right? Hopefully, the second I walk out the door?"
Jake smirks, and you already know he's about to say something out of pocket.
"I actually had other plans, and I think having Mav present would kill the mood."
Bradley's muscles ripple with restraint, and he points a finger.
"Tread lightly, Bagman. That's my baby sister." He growls, and you scoff.
"Put away the tough guy act, Roo. You and dad need to get over yourselves and realize you're not my keepers."
Bradley's features soften a bit, and he sighs. His shoulders are tense, and he begins pacing back and forth while mumbling under his breath.
"Okay, so when are you telling Mav?"
You shift under his gaze, and he can sense by the way you're batting your eyelashes that he isn't going to like your response. You only do that when you want something, and you know exactly how to get your way with him.
"Well, that's the thing," You start, and Bradley sets his mouth in a hard line.
"We- I was hoping this could be our little secret."
Your lower lip juts out, but it does nothing to make Bradley cave this time.
"No."
You climb out of bed and amble toward him, doing your best to look small and innocent. He eyes you with suspicion, and you stop in front of him.
"Come on, BradBrad. Please? For me?"
That seals his fate.
"Fuck- fine! How long?"
You squeal and engulf him in a tight hug that he reluctantly returns.
"Just a little bit longer."
He sighs in defeat, and you pull back with a bright smile.
"When you tell him, keep me out of it. I'll be buried alongside Jake if he finds out I knew, and I can't think of anything worse than an eternity next to that dickhead."
You slap his arm lightly, and he turns to leave.
"I can't believe I got drug into this bullshit."
That was almost six months ago, and it turns out you and Bradley have different definitions of just a little bit longer. He's resorted to calling you every day, pestering you relentlessly about when you're coming clean.
You're sprawled out in Jake's bed while he gets water in the kitchen, and your phone rings on schedule. You answer the FaceTime call, and Bradley's distressed face pops up on the screen.
"When are you telling him?" He asks, skipping niceties altogether.
"Well, hello to you too." You jest, but he doesn't look the slightest bit amused. You swear you can spot a few new wrinkles coupled with gray hairs, and guilt eats at you. It fades quickly when you hear the bite in his tone.
"Y/N, I'm serious. When are you going to tell him?"
You groan and roll onto your side, a migraine settling in.
"I don't know, Brad! The wedding? Why would I tell him when I'm just going to get a lecture? The two of you aren't exactly the most level-headed people when it comes to me!"
Remorse swims in your brother's eyes, and he takes a deep breath.
"Wedding? Are the two of you really that serious?" He questions, and your free hand comes up to rub your temple.
"I don't know, maybe? The thought has crossed my mind."
A ghost of a smile covers his face, and he rubs his jaw. There's a knock at the front door, but you don't pay it any mind as he starts speaking again.
"Well, little sis, if it's really tha-"
You cut him off when you hear voices float up the stairs and shoot up in bed.
You vaguely hear Jake say, "So, funny story." followed by another man's voice.
"Shut the fuck up. Hold on." Your ears strain to hear better, and Bradley frowns when your face blanches. "Oh my god."
You jump out of bed and start scrambling around, desperate to find an escape.
"What's going on?"
Your head snaps back to your phone, and Bradley hasn't seen you this frantic since he caught you making out with your high school boyfriend that you snuck in.
"Dad is here!" You whisper shout. "Why the fuck is he here?"
Bradley scowls and tries to sort out the situation in his head.
"Are you sure?"
You scoff as you climb out the window and curl up on the roof, shivering as a cold breeze whips around you.
"What do you me- yes, I'm sure! You think I don't recognize my own dad's fucking voice?"
Your voice is hushed, and Bradley's eyes widen when he realizes you're serious.
"Well, what the hell is he doing there at ten pm?" He asks and the pointed look you give him causes him to snap his mouth shut.
"Just shut the fuck up before you get me caught!" You bite, and you vaguely register him moving around. This is absurd. You're not a teenager in high school. Why the hell are you hiding from your dad on your boyfriend's roof?
"God, I have the worst luck. It could be raining dicks, and I'd look up and catch a titty!" You complain, and Bradley snorts on the other end.
You wait with bated breath, praying it's just a quick visit, but you have no such luck.
You hear the door to Jake's room open, and Bradley searches for his keys. So much for leaving him out of it.
"I'm on my way." He informs you, and your eyes are wild as you acknowledge him with a nod. Your breaths are erratic as panic claws at your throat; for once, you don't argue with him.
The second you hear the window slide open, you know you're done for. You're met with your dad's hard eyes and try to muster an angelic smile. His jaw is set, and there's a burning crimson peeking over the collar of his shirt all the way up to his cheeks.
"Hi, daddy."
You don't even get a chance to stand before a loud crash rings out, and you rush back inside, almost falling in the process. He has Jake pinned against the wall with his arm across his throat, murder clearly not off the table.
Jake just takes it, his face relaxed and posture open. You know better, though. You've managed to get past that unphased exterior, and you can read the fear in Jake's eyes like a book.
"What is the one thing I fucking said?" Mav growls through clenched teeth, and you're on him in an instant.
You try your best to pull him back, desperate for space between the men, but it's no use. Mav only has maybe half an inch on you, but the man is a lot stronger than he looks. The adrenaline pumping through his veins does nothing to help and you resort to pleading.
"Dad, stop!"
He turns to look at you, and for the first time in your life, there's no mercy or gentleness on his face when he stares at you.
"I'll deal with you in a minute."
You've never seen him like this, which sends a shiver down your spine. You knew it would be ugly, but never in a million years did you think he would go this far off the rails.
Thoughts race through your head at a million miles an hour as you try to think of what to do, but the problem is solved for you.
There are loud thumps as Bradley bounds up the stairs, and the scene unfolds quicker than you can process. You watch as he picks your dad up and removes him from Jake, your feet carrying you to your boyfriend at lightning speed.
"Are you okay? I'm so sorry." You weep, and you can't recall when you started crying.
You try to look behind you as Mav struggles against Bradley, but Jake cradles your face and forces you to stay looking at him.
"Hey, I'm fine. Look at me, sweets. Don't worry about that right now, let Rooster calm him down."
Mav fights against the larger man with a valiant yet futile effort. Bradley considers wrapping his arms around him entirely and forcing him to stay in place but decides not to push his luck.
Just as the thought enters his mind, Mav slams face-first into realization and stops abruptly.
"Did you know about this?"
Bradley swallows and retreats with slow steps as Mavs wrath is re-focused on him. He feels like he's going toe to toe with a wild animal and wonders if playing dead would work.
"I may or may not have had a teeny bit of knowledge about the situation." He says cautiously, and your dad's eyes narrow into thin slits.
"You didn't think to tell me?" He snaps, and Bradley raises his hands defensively.
"It wasn't my place. Besides, based on this reaction, can you blame us for keeping you in the dark?"
He immediately wishes he could take it back when Mavs fist clenches at his side. You briefly consider making a break for it and going into witness protection, but you don't have the chance before your dad's attention is back on you.
"You know how this ends, Y/N. I have told you time and time again not to get caught up with men like him."
His voice is softer now but still holds an edge, and Jake's arm tightens around your waist. Mav doesn't miss the subtle shift; his jaw ticks upon seeing the man's hand on his only daughter.
In his defense, he's been through this with you before. He and Bradley are so protective because you've had your heart broken more than once by hotshot military men, and you never seem to learn your lesson.
You know this time is different, though. You just have to get your dad to see it.
"He's not like that, dad. He's different. I trust him." Your voice is small and Mav shakes his head.
"You always think that! They're all different in the beginning, but it always ends the same. Let's go." He motions toward the door, but your feet stay glued in place.
"No."
His head whips around to look at you, and you almost laugh at how high his eyebrows are raised. You've got a history of defying him, but you've never blatantly told him no to his face before.
"Excuse me?"
You stand a little straighter now and take a step forward, but Jake keeps his hand on the curve of your spine.
"I said no. I'm not leaving, and I'm not wrong. This isn't the beginning when you're still under some spell, and this isn't going to end with me heartbroken."
Your dad scoffs and places a hand on his hip, clearly over this entire ordeal.
"What do you mean this isn't the beginning?"
You take a deep breath and try to steady your voice before answering, and Bradley looks like he wants to die. Being buried next to Jake doesn't sound so bad if it gets him out of this.
He knows your response will send Mav into another tailspin, and he braces himself, ready to jump in again if he has to.
"Jake and I have been dating for six months. I love him, and he loves me."
There it is, the nuclear bomb. The words hang in the air as Mav processes the information, and his eyes dart back and forth absentmindedly as he does the math.
"You've been seeing him since you got here?"
You can see the hurt on his features for the first time since he arrived, making your stomach twist. His shoulders drop, and all the fight leaves his body.
"It started out as a fling. We never meant for it to get this serious. We were going to tell you but time just kept passing and it got to the point that we didn't know how to anymore." You explain gently, and he sits on Jake's bed before jolting back up.
"God only knows what's happened in those sheets, can we go to the living room or something?" He asks with his face scrunched in disgust, and you huff a short laugh through your nose.
The four of you go downstairs and sit in the living room as your dad continues raking over every interaction he has ever seen you have with Jake in his mind.
"How did you manage to keep this a secret from everyone when you all work together? Or am I the only one that doesn't know?"
You shake your head and lay on Jake's shoulder. Your migraine has upgraded to a jackhammer doing to town on the inside of your skull, and you want nothing more than to take a painkiller and close your eyes.
"No one else knows. We haven't told them, at least."
Mav nods and settles into the armchair, clearly making himself at home as he props his feet up on the coffee table. You feel the waves of displeasure rolling off of Jake. The man is religious about keeping the house clean, and his eye is already twitching at the fact your dad still has his shoes on.
You're about to say something when a more pressing matter comes to your attention.
"Wait, how did you know I'm here?" You frown, and Mav freezes. You give him the signature Mitchell look that tells him not to bullshit you, and he shrinks back a bit.
"I tracked your phone when you didn’t answer my calls." He mumbles, and you lurch forward in your seat.
"Pardon? You tracked me? How do you even have access to that? No, better yet, why do you have that? You don't think that's a tad invasive?" You half shout, and Bradley winces.
Two angry Mitchells under one roof is never a good thing. The last time it happened, he had to make up a story to send the cops away.
You're brought back down when Jake's large hand squeezes your thigh, and you close your eyes while taking a deep breath. That's one thing you love about this man. He's the only person you've ever met that can bring you back from the edge.
Bradley and Mav share a look at your sudden shift in demeanor, and you know they're both thinking the same thing. Neither of them has ever been able to snuff out your temper once the fuse is lit, and the fact Jake did it without so much as a word speaks volumes.
"Okay, I'm fine. Everything is fine." You breathe and Jake smiles. He's proud of the way you've grown since dating him. Your spitfire attitude makes him look tame. He never imagined he'd love a woman who encourages his antics rather than trying to control him.
That's why you two work so well. You bring out his chaos, and he brings out your calm. It's the perfect ratio of give and take. The two of you bring out the best in each other, which is part of why you fell so fast.
"Listen, dad. Jake and I are going to keep seeing each other whether you like it or not. He makes me feel safe, wild, and loved; I couldn't ask for a better man. If you could try and pull your head out of your ass for more than three seconds, you might be able to see that."
There's another thing Jake adores about you. You never shy away from speaking your mind, and you never sugarcoat the truth. He's seen you make grown men cry, and he knows without a shadow of a doubt that you're the only one who could ever put the legendary Maverick in his place with little to no effort.
Mav goes to bite back, but the look you give him has the words dying on his tongue. You're a clone of him, yet somehow even more of an immovable force. He knows there's no point in arguing; you're not going to budge.
"Okay. I'll try to get on board." He relents, and Bradley's eyes dart between the two of you.
Mav turns to Jake, and your boyfriend sits up, ready to take a verbal berating.
"If you hurt her, I will ensure you never touch an F-18 again. She better never call me crying over you, Seresin, so help me god."
You feel Jake nod next to you, and some of the tension dissipates from your shoulders.
"Oh, and for the love of Christ, don't get my daughter pregnant."
Bradley chokes on his spit and your eyes widen with horror.
"Dad! Oh my god." You groan, but he stands firm in his statement.
"I mean it. You're still at the height of your career. The last thing you need is a baby out of wedlock."
You know it's coming from a place of love and concern, but it doesn't make it less embarrassing. No one expects Jake's response, and Bradley raises his eyebrows at you.
"What if I marry her first?"
Mav looks genuinely taken aback, and the mouthy pilot is struck silent for the first time. His mouth opens and closes a few times, and you watch with amusement as he tries to make his brain work.
"One thing at a time."
At that, Bradley stands up and shoots your dad a look.
"We should get going. It's late, and I think I speak for everyone when I say I'm ready for this to be over."
Mav nods, and you stand to give him a hug before Jake shakes his hand.
"Love you, dad. Love you, Roo."
"Love you too." They say in unison, and you release a breath you didn't know you were holding when the front door closes.
You turn to Jake with your arms crossed, an arrogant smirk painted on your lips.
"So you want to marry me and get me pregnant, huh?"
“Is that okay with you?” He asks and you wrap your arms around his neck.
“More than okay. Why don’t we start practicing tonight?” You suggest and his eyes darken before spinning you around to face away from him.
“Lead the way.”

Obsession - Part 1
Tumblr media
Summary: Y/N meets her brother's girlfriend's dad for the first time... and they can't seem to stay away from each other. Warnings: older!H, age gap romance, smut to come, angst
Word Count - 4k
"Jake, they're going to be here soon, right? You need to come downstairs so you can introduce me when they get here."
"Calm down, Y/N. I'm coming. Is the food ready?" Jake calls from his room. Y/N nods as she pulls the tray out of the oven before realising that he can't see her and yells back an affirmative. This is big. Jake had never invited any of his girlfriend's families to meet her - it had simply never been that serious before. But he seems to really like Isla, and Y/N, being the protective big sister, made him organise something. From what Y/N knows, Isla's mom is out of the picture, and she lives with her dad.
As Y/N quickly sets the table, she can't help but think about how much has changed since their parents' tragic accident five years ago. She was just 19 at the time, thrust into a world of responsibilities she hadn't been prepared for. But she rose to the challenge, becoming not only Jake's guardian but also his closest confidante and friend.
Now, at 24, Y/N is balancing her own life as well. She's in her final year at university, pursuing a degree in literature. Her love for books and storytelling has always been a part of her, and it's no surprise to anyone who knows her that she has chosen this path. Her dream is to become a writer one day, like her mom had been, crafting novels that will transport readers to different worlds, if only for a little while.
Jake emerges from his room, his usually tousled hair neatly combed. He wears a crisp shirt and a slightly anxious expression. Y/N can't help but smile at her brother. He has grown into a responsible and kind-hearted young man, and she is proud of him for taking this step.
"You look great," Y/N says, offering a reassuring smile. "Just be yourself, and everything will go fine."
Jake nods, though his nervousness is still evident. Y/N knows how much he cares about Isla, and she is determined to make this dinner a pleasant experience for all of them.
As they hear the doorbell ring, Y/N takes a deep breath and prepares herself, sneaking a quick glance at her brother, who looks even more anxious.
"Remember," Y/N whispers to Jake, "just be genuine. Show him that you truly care about Isla, and he'll see the same good-hearted young man that I see."
Jake nods, and they both make their way to the front door. Y/N swings it open and it takes everything in her to keep her jaw from falling open. Isla and her father stand in the doorway, the latter carrying a large bouquet of flowers. But the flowers aren't what has Y/N so taken aback.
The first thing that strikes her is his striking handsomeness. He has a timeless charm about him, with a chiseled jawline, piercing green eyes, and salt-and-pepper hair that only seems to enhance his rugged appeal. His eyes scan her up and down before he offers her a smile, one that Y/N feels in her core. He couldn’t have been older than 45, and he carries himself well. He oozes wealth and success, and Y/N has to remind herself to maintain her composure.
"Hello, Mr. Styles," she manages to say, though her voice quivers slightly. "It's a pleasure to finally meet you. I'm Y/N, Jake's sister."
Mr. Styles extends his hand with a warm smile. "Y/N, the pleasure is mine, but it's Harry. I insist,” he replies, his voice smooth and comforting.
As they shake hands, Y/N can't help but feel a subtle connection between them, beyond the initial surprise of his appearance. His hand is warm, and she revels in the touch before realizing she might have been holding on a bit too long. She quickly composes herself, dropping his grip as Isla introduces herself, and Y/N sends the young girl what she hopes is a welcoming smile.
As they all settle at the dinner table, Y/N tries to put her initial surprise behind her and focus on making the evening enjoyable for everyone. The conversation flows smoothly, with Jake and Isla sharing stories of their time together. Harry doesn't grill Jake like Y/N had been worried he would, but instead, he is polite and extremely well-spoken. The sleeve of his jacket slides up slightly while he speaks, gesturing with his hands, and Y/N's eyes almost roll off her head when she catches sight of the start of a sleeve of tattoos. He must have noticed her staring because Y/N suddenly feels his eyes on her, and she meets his gaze to find him wearing a slightly mischievous smirk.
"So, Y/N, we haven't heard much from you this evening. Tell me about yourself." He leans forward, taking a sip of his wine, staring at her over the top of his glass.
"Oh, um," Y/N begins, feeling the blush rise to her cheeks. She is mindful that Jake and Isla are also seated at the table, so she needs to control herself.
"I'm in my final year at university currently. I'm studying literature."
"Really? It's one of my interests as well. I used to teach it before I took over running my father's company."
"Oh, that's amazing. I'm the same way… Jake likes to joke that we're going to run out of space for all my books." Y/N laughs, and Harry joins in her laughter. Jake simply rolls his eyes, muttering to Isla about how Y/N is going to fill his room with books when he moves out.
"Y/N, I forgot to ask you about this, and Mr. Styles, I hope it's alright, but I actually managed to get Isla and me concert tickets for this evening. Would it be alright if we went? I promise we'll be back before midnight." Jake pipes up, rubbing his hands together nervously. Y/N shoots Harry a look, who simply shrugs and nods.
"As long as you're being safe, I think that should be okay. Have fun, you two. Y/N and I will clean up."
Jake and Isla quickly bid their goodbyes, with Y/N and Isla exchanging numbers, and Y/N making the younger girl promise to text her if she ever needs anything. When the door shuts behind them, Harry and Y/N are left alone, and the air in the room shifts considerably.
"So…"
"So…" Harry mimics, coaxing a small laugh from Y/N.
"You don't have to stay. I can clean up alone. I'm sure you'd rather get home." Y/N says as she starts taking the plates to the sink.
"No, I'd like to stay. Get to know you a bit more." Harry picks up the wine glasses and follows her into the kitchen. Her breath hitches as she feels him behind her, but he simply reaches over her to place the glasses in the sink before moving back to the table to grab more things.
"Are you sure? No one waiting for you at home?" The question slips out before Y/N can stop it, and she internally facepalms. Get it together, Y/N. He isn’t interested. He's older than her, by a lot. Even if he didn’t have a girlfriend, what he did have was a hell of a lot more experience.
Harry appears back in the doorway of the kitchen, holding more plates, his smirk back on his face.
"No… no one at home. Are you trying to kick me out? Got a boyfriend coming over?"
"No boyfriend. I… haven’t had much luck in that department." She turns away from him, facing the sink so he wouldn’t be able to see the blush on her cheeks.
"Really? Pretty girl like you? I would assume the boys would be falling at your feet."
She shakes her head in a silent laugh as she loads the dishwasher before pulling out two clean wine glasses, lifting one in offering.
"One more glass wouldn’t hurt. Then I’ll leave you to your evening." He takes it with a nod of thanks, opening the bottle, and Y/N moves to sit on the couch, bringing the glasses with her. He sits beside her, and Y/N forces herself to relax when she realises how close he is. She can smell his cologne now. It’s vanilla, intoxicating, and almost euphoric.
"It’s fine. I enjoy some new company once in a while. Jake is a great kid, but we do get tired of each other."
"He seems great. Isla really likes him."
"Isla’s really amazing. You’ve done a really great job with her."  At this, Harry looks proud.
"I appreciate that. Raising a kid alone has been a struggle, but we’ve managed this far. I can’t believe she’s going to be 18. So, I’m curious to know more about your thoughts on some classics.  I don’t know many people who take as much of an interest in books as I do. What are your favourites?
“I love this question. I've always been fascinated by the works of Russian authors. Dostoevsky, in particular, has this incredible ability to explore the depths of human psychology. 'Crime and Punishment' is a masterpiece in that regard.”
Harry nods, his gaze fixed on Y/N as if hanging on to her every word.
"I couldn't agree more. Dostoevsky's exploration of guilt, morality, and the human condition is both thought-provoking and intense. 'The Brothers Karamazov' is another one of his works that left a profound impact on me.”
"And what about contemporary literature? Are there any recent books or authors that have caught your attention?”
Y/N pauses, considering her response, swirling what is left in her glass.
"Well, I've been quite taken by the works of Kazuo Ishiguro. His ability to craft emotionally resonant narratives is truly remarkable. 'Never Let Me Go' is a haunting exploration of identity and mortality."
Harry nods again in agreement. "Ishiguro's prose is beautifully understated, and his exploration of themes like memory and love is incredibly moving. 'The Remains of the Day' is another gem. I have a really great article on some of his work. What’s your number? I’ll send you the link.” He pulls out his phone and looks at her expectantly.
Y/N rattles off the digits and her heart races when he phone dings on the table. She has his number.
There’s silence for a moment as they both drink from their glasses. Y/N can tell they’re both well aware of the tension, but Harry is better at hiding how he’s affected compared to her.
"Have you dated since Isla’s mother?" Y/N isn’t quite sure where the question comes from, but her wine glass is getting awfully low, and Harry’s presence is messing with her head. Every few seconds, her eyes wander to his lips, and Harry follows her gaze. They’re treading in dangerous waters, and they both know it, but for some reason, it’s even more exciting. Y/N shifts slightly on the couch, and her knee brushes his. Harry doesn’t flinch; he doesn’t move; he just keeps his leg where it is, maintaining the contact. She watches as he takes another sip of wine, his gaze fixed on her, his eyes filled with a mixture of curiosity and desire.
"Dated is a strong term. I sleep with people when I feel the urge. I haven’t met anyone that I’ve wanted to start anything serious with. No one I wanted to… what is it your generation says? Wine and dine?" He raises his glass in Y/N’s direction, his eyes locked onto hers.
Y/N can't help but laugh at his playful tone, even as her heart races at the implications of his words.
"Yes, wine and dine. That's certainly an approach, Mr. Styles.” She hadn’t meant for the name to sound as suggestive as it did. Or maybe she did. He swallows thickly at the use of his last name, shifting in his seat.
“Well maybe I just haven’t met the woman who’s made me want to change.”
“That’s a… possibility.” He’s slightly closer to her now and his scent is overwhelming her. Her gaze flicks from his eyes back down to his lips again and this time, he calls her out on it.
“Do you need something Y/N?”
“Hmm?”
“I asked if you needed something. You seem rather fascinated… is there something on my face?”
“Oh! No! There’s nothing on your face it’s fine.” “Just fine?” He teases and Y/N covers her face with her hands, her head spinning slightly from the alcohol. She looks up at him again, meeting his eyes and trapping her bottom lip between her teeth. He groans, almost inaudibly.
“Stop looking at me like that Y/N or I’m going to think-” He trails off, before shaking his head and running a hand over his face. He stands, picking up his wine glass and moves towards the kitchen.
“Think what Harry?” Y/N follows him, standing in the doorway, forcing him to look at her.
“I- I think I should be going. It was lovely to meet you and Jake finally, I’m sure I’ll see you again soon.”
Y/N decides to play dumb. She is fully aware of what’s behind his sudden change of mood, and she knows he’s cautious. Wary. Normally she would be too, but the wine has made her bold and he’s captivating.
"Harry," Y/N says softly, taking a step closer to him."Is everything okay?”
Harry lets out a sigh, his shoulders slumping as he looks at her with a mixture of longing and frustration. "Y/N, you're making it really difficult for me to leave," he admits, his voice barely above a whisper.
“So don’t.” Her arms go up, around his neck and they’re close now. Close enough that Y/N can feel the warmth of his breath on her face. And then he’s leaning in.
Their lips touch for the first time and it’s electric. Harry’s hands move up her body, tangling in her hair, pulling slightly and Y/N moans into his mouth. He quickly establishes dominance in the kiss, kissing her until she’s gasping for air. He walks with her, pushing her until her back is against the wall and he’s leaning into her. Harry pulls back for a moment to breathe and Y/N pulls him closer, wanting needing him in her orbit. He sinks into her touch for a second, two, three and then he’s pulling away from her, pinching the bridge of his nose.
“Fuck.” He mutters, almost to himself and his internal turmoil is more than evident on his face.
“Harry? What’s wrong?”
“Y/N I’m almost twice your age. And this?” He gestures between them. “Can’t happen.”
“Why not? You feel it don’t you? The pull? There’s something here.” Y/N steps closer and Harry lets her.
“Of course I feel it Y/N and that’s why I know that whatever it is, we need to ignore. You’re young, and I’m well…”
“Just because I’m young, it doesn’t mean I’m immature Harry. As an adult, I’m telling you that whatever this is, I’m ok with it.”
“I can’t- I don’t… Y/N, I have to go.”
Y/N stands there speechless as Harry pushes away from her. He grabs his jacket off the couch and moves towards the door.
“Harry, let’s talk about this.”
“Thanks for dinner.” And then he’s gone, shutting the door behind him, leaving Y/N alone, incredible confused and slightly turned on.
Tumblr media
It’s been two weeks since Y/N saw Harry at dinner and it’s been about two minutes since she last thought about him. Well to be more precise, since she last thought about the feeling of his lips on hers. If she closes her eyes, she can picture it. The warmth of his touch, the way he pushed her up against the wall…
“Y/N? Are you even listening to me?” Jake waves a hand in front of his sisters face, noting that it’s the 3rd time that she’s zoned out during the conversation.
“Oh. Sorry. What were you saying?” Y/N forces herself to pay attention.
“Isla said she’d text you but she wanted to know if you’d be cool with going over to their place to help her with an assignment for her literature class.”
“Umm… is her dad going to be there?”
“Mr Styles?” Jake raises a quizzical brow. “I don’t know… why?”
“Uh, no reason. When does she want me to come over? I’m working most of this week except tomorrow.”
“I told her that, she said tomorrow was fine. Thanks for helping her Y/N she’ll appreciate it.”
“No worries Jake.” Y/N offered a small smile but internally, she couldn’t be more stressed. The thought of seeing Harry again, especially after he left in such a rush, made her incredibly nervous. Maybe he wouldn’t be there. Hopefully he wouldn’t be home.
(4:09pm) Isla Styles: Hi Y/N! Jake told me you were happy to come over and help me tomorrow! Thank you so much! I should be home around 6pm, usually I work till 8 but I’ll ask to finish early. Dad shouldn’t be home so I’ll leave a key under the mat for you. Let yourself in at 6 if I’m not home yet and I’ll meet you there.
(4:34pm) Y/N: Hey Isla! No worries, happy to help. See you tomorrow :)
Tumblr media
6pm rolls around and Y/N finds herself standing in front of the house… well mansion Isla had given her the address for. There are no cars in the driveway so Y/N assumes Isla is running late. But just in case, she knocks. And she waits. There’s no sound from inside the house so Y/N fumbles under the mat for the key and slides it in the lock. She’s aware she’s alone in the house but she still tiptoes inside quietly. The ceilings are high, and there is a large statement staircase in the middle of the entrance. Floor to ceiling windows are in excess and Y/N stands quietly in awe for a few moments. It’s modern, and clean and everything Y/N would want in a house. She finds the living room easily, deciding to set up the few things she brought to help Isla with her assignment on the dining table.
(6:09pm) Isla Styles: I’m on my way! 15 minutes, I swear! Make yourself at home x
Y/N is opening her laptop when she hears a noise. A noise that sounds a lot like a moan. And then it happens again. It’s faint, muffled due to where she is in the house, so she moves from the dining table to the bottom of the staircase.
“Fuck Harry. Right there, oh my GOD!” The woman’s voice is high pitched, her moans increasing in volume as Harry, from what Y/N can gather, fucks the shit out of her.
“You like that baby? Gonna come for me? You feel so good. Fuck Y/N.”
Y/N stills at the sound of her name, not waiting to hear the other woman’s response before scrambling back to the kitchen. Did he just…? Surely not.
10 minutes passes and Y/N hears heels click clacking down the stairs. From where she sits, she gets a glimpse of a woman in a short blue dress, who lets herself out without another sound.
At least they’re done, Y/N thinks to herself.
She’s scrolling mindlessly on her phone, willing Isla to appear, when she hears footsteps. She didn’t hear the front door open again which means…
Harry appears in front of her, with only a pair of boxers on, making his way to the fridge and pulling out a bottle of water. He hasn’t noticed her yet and Y/N doesn’t really know how to handle it. But as usual, her mouth speaks before her brain catches up.
“Do you usually call the women you’re hooking up with my name? Or is that just a more recent thing?”
He jumps, spilling a bit of water down his chest, as he realises who is sitting at his dining room table.
“Y/N what the fuck are you doing in my house?”
“Hello to you too. Isla wanted help with an assignment. She’s late, so she told me to let myself in. She also told me you wouldn’t be home. But obviously you are… and someone else is too it seems.” She smirks at how uncomfortable he seems as she makes her way over to him.
“Isla isn’t home till after 8 on Saturdays.” Is all he can think of to say.
“Mmm. You didn’t answer my question.”
“I’m not discussing my sex life with you Y/N. I told you, nothing is going to happen between us.” But even so, he steps closer.
“Ok, but if you’re calling other women my name, you must want it to. And I want it to. So that makes us two consenting adults. I don’t think I can stay away from you, Harry.”
Harry’s eyes shut as he inhales the smell of Y/N’s perfume, the intoxicating scent taking him back to the night a few weeks before. This time Y/N is the one to lean in, attaching her lips to his. She’s mindful that he was fucking someone else just moments before but in the moment she can’t bring herself to care. She can feel the moment that Harry gives in, caging her in against the kitchen counter, devouring her mouth with his. Y/N runs her fingers down his chest, revelling in the chance she gets to touch and feel. His skin is smooth and his curls are soft. She finds the harder she pulls, the more insatiable he becomes.
“Y/N? Are you here?” Isla’s voice rings out from the foyer and both Harry and Y/N freeze, pulling away from each other.
“Get out of here… when she sees you without any fucking clothes on she’s going to ask questions.” Y/N pushes on his bare chest and Harry quickly moves up the back stairs up to his room, but not before pressing a small peck to her lips again.
“I’m so sorry I’m a bit late! Are you ready to get started?” Isla chirps, completely oblivious as to what was happening just moments before.
Y/N nods, and starts to show Isla some of the books she brought when her phone dings. Once, twice, then three times.
“Someone’s popular!” Isla jokes. Y/N offers her a small smile as she flips her phone over.
(6:31pm) Harry: You’re right.
(6:31pm) Harry: I don’t think I can stay away from you either.
(6:31pm) Harry: Let me take you out for dinner. Let’s talk.
Y/N glances nervously over at Isla, who seems engrossed in her reading material.
(6:33pm) Y/N: Ok. We’ll talk.
A/N: Hi!!! Thank you for reading, I am SO excited for this series to begin. What do we think of our characters so far...? Reblogs and Feedback are always appreciated 💋

That's Definitely a Name
dad!Jake "Hangman" Seresin x reader
Tumblr media
Summary: You need to name your newborn son and your daughter helps.
Notes/warnings: this is inspired by an ask about the moments after their son's birth. I wanted to do it with Oh, Baby, too, so I am doing Oh, Baby first, and then Signed Away. Mention of pregnancy, birth, that's it I think.
Words: 835
Part of the Oh, Baby Universe
-
"He looks like you."
You snort, but it's weak from your exhaustion. "Well it's only fair," you say. "Eve is nearly your clone."
"That's true." Jake chuckles before he presses a kiss to your temple. It’s a long kiss, and soft, and conveys once more what was earlier expressed with words: “I love you, Honey. You’re so amazing. How did you just do this? How have you done this twice?
That last question has also crossed your mind in the twenty minutes since birthing your son. Twice. You’ve done this twice. But this time, your brain isn’t full of a humming fuzziness in the aftermath as it was with Eve. You’re so alert and aware of your daughter waiting outside the room with her grandmother, of Jake wrapped around you, of your new son swaddled in your arms.
“What do you think we should name this little man?” Jake asks. “We never settled on one.”
During the months of your pregnancy, you’d shuffled through many names for your son, but none of them seemed to fit quite right. For Eve, it was a no-brainer. Without Jake in her life, it was important to you that her name connect to her father in some way, which was achieved by choosing the name of his grandmother. For your son, though, there isn’t someone you can positively name him after without some degree of resulting issue. After your mother’s fit over Jake a few years ago, your father didn’t make the effort to stay involved in your life, and Jake’s is horrid, so they were never added to the list of possibilities. Jake feels that making the little boy a junior will be too confusing, unable to let go of the image of you irritated for some reason and calling out the matching name causing unnecessary anxiety for both he and his son when you are actually only mad at one of them. You tossed around the idea of using a name from your group of friends, but you quickly realized that of the five other men on Jake’s team, four of them would take serious offense if their name wasn’t chosen while the other one would be so sweet as to simply thank you and your husband for even being considered. They didn’t last on the list for more than a day.
“We weren’t given enough time,” you decide as you trace your finger down the line of his tiny nose. “He came too early.”
“I don't think one week before your due date qualifies as too early,” Jake says, snickering. “Let's be real, Honey, we were slacking from indecisiveness.”
“Well, since we can’t figure it out maybe we should just let Eve pick a name.”
You immediately miss the warmth of his arms when Jake pulls back and shifts to the side of the bed to look you in the eye. “Now wait a minute, Honey. Think about what you're saying.” His eyes are wide and his hands gesture wildly with his attempt to snuff out your idea. “I love you and I love our baby girl, but do you really want to risk our son being named something crazy like, I don't know, Meeko? You know she loves that weird raccoon from ‘Pocahontas’,” he says. “And what happens when we don’t take her suggestion because we cannot do that to our son, hmm? This is not a particularly good time for us to be snubbed by our daughter.”
You release a light scoff. “Oh, she wouldn't do that to us, or her brother.”
“She absolutely would,” Jake says with a slight quirk of his lips. His hands fall back to his sides. “Honey, if we truly let her pick, ninety-nine percent chance we have a Disney critter sidekick name for our son.”
You look down at your newborn as you consider Jake’s concern. Meeko Seresin? You internally chuckle. No, that would not do. But your girl is smart and neither you nor Jake have been able to come to a decision on your own. You see no real harm in asking. Not to mention, it would be a prime opportunity to have Eve feel more included now that she’s no longer the only child in her parent’s lives. And if her suggestions are life-ruining bully-targeting disasters, then you’ll deal with her reaction from being denied later.
“Teddy Bear!” Eve bursts out as she sits tucked between you and the rail of the hospital bed.
A sigh mixed with a barely-there chuckle falls from your husband’s lips.
“Baby girl, you want to name your brother Teddy Bear?” Jake asks, glancing at the amused smile you’re struggling to hold back before returning his eyes to his daughter.
Taking the question very seriously, Eve’s face loses all expression, her stare unwavering against her father’s. “Yes.”
“After your teddy bear?”
“Yes.”
Jake runs a hand through his blond locks. The other rests on his hip. “Wouldn't you like to think about it for another second?”
“No.”
Teddy “Bear” Jacob Seresin

wind flower - avatar cast!
includes: gn!reader. fluff FLUFF FLUFF. use of y/n. this was on the forefront of my mind so it’s kinda half assed LMAO. the interview isn’t really in depth.
Tumblr media
imagine being apart of the avatar cast and doing an interview with them!
Tumblr media
background info!
you were a famous childhood actor. you’ve been obsessed with the idea of being on the big screen since you were 7. luckily enough your parents let you go through with it and you were a big hit! landing shows like greys anatomy, my babysitters a vampire and movies like adventures in babysitting and diary of a whimpy kid.
with age comes venturing out of certain genres. when you turned 18 you ventured into more mature shows and movies. you stared in shows like euphoria, grown-ish, bridgerton and now at 21, your first movie, avatar : the way of water.
when you got the call back for your audition you were bouncing practically through the roof. you loved avatar as a kid and wanted to become an avatar yourself. this was like a dream come true for you.
when you met the cast you were over the moon, they were all so sweet and welcoming. the energy while filming was one you could get used to, especially considering you had 3 more movies to film in the avatar universe.
when you guys wrapped up filming you were really sad but looked forward to the interviews you all could do together! your manager called you and told you that you all were to do an interview with buzzfeed. it wouldn’t be your first rodeo with them.
enough chitchat, let’s get into the interview!
Tumblr media
“hi buzzfeed! we’re the cast of avatar: the way of water and we’re here today to answer some questions while playing with puppies!!” you spoke looking to the camera with a smile as you watched the puppies run over everyone’s legs.
(yes i did that buzzfeed interview type cause it’s SO CUTE)
after playing with the puppies for a second it was time for everyone to introduce themselves. you were last and gave a small smile as you waved to the camera “hi im (y/n)(l/n) and i play (c/n)” you said as you picked up a puppy and held it in your arms.
a few questions later and it got to you. you grabbed the piece of paper and read it out loud “who is your character and how would you describe them.” you looked over to bailey who busted out laughing as you did the same. “bailey is such a hater! that’s why i hope the dog pees on you!” you laughed and turned to the camera. “ well i play (c/n), he/she’s jake and neytiri’s oldest son/daughter about 2 years older than neteyam” you pointed to jamie “and how i would describe him/her-“ “sassy!” jack spoke up. “a raging ball of fire” trinity chimed in “i feel so attacked and im mad they’re right!” everyone busted out laughing.
after a few more answers the interview was coming to a close and the director at buzzfeed wanted everyone to give their opinion on the movie and what to look forward to.
“for me” you started “i would say the movie is really about family that’s the biggest component. it touches on a lot of familiar undertones that you really don’t see in a lot of movies like we get to see jake sully as a dad you know” you shifted in your seat before speaking again. “it’s a really good movie that james cameron worked really hard on as well as the cast and everyone behind the scenes and im really excited for everyone to watch it” you smiled as you grabbed another puppy.
“you guys want me to do it- okay fine- thank you to buzz feed! and thank you to these little adorable puppies who are available for adoption if you want a furry companion to watch the movie with. thank you guys again and make sure to go watch avatar: the way of water out in theaters now!! bye!!!” you snuggled the dog before smiling again. the interview coming to a close.
“just so you know. the dog did pee on me.” bailey pulled you to the side and you fell out DYING LAUGHING.

Moon Boys x non-jewish!reader
Join my taglist! Masterlist Moon Knight master list
Summary: You go to Rosh Hashanah services in Chicago with your boys, and are happy to learn more about this part of themselves.
Warnings: Illusions to Marc's childhood, Judaism references I try to explain. Reader isn't Jewish and I'm aware my readers are from different religious backgrounds but I think in a majority (from what I know?) it's okay to attend services and participate in things like the tashlich. I try to keep it vague though, but only you really know what you are comfortable with so use discression!
A/N: I am not Jewish, I am a hopeful convert! This year was my first Rosh Hashanah and I was very moved by it all. I'm lucky enough to have gotten to know a friend there and her and her family are very welcoming and have been wonderful explaining this holiday and others and preparing me for Yom Kippur. That being said, I attend a reform temple. I do not know what denomination Marc is, but my evidence seems to point to conservative. Also, I know traditions are different country to country and group to group (Ashkenazi, Sephardi etc) all have different practices. I tried to stick to what I found the most universal in my studying but I am always ready and willing to be corrected. If there is something incorrect, please let me know!
****************
You always thought he looked so handsome like this, with his prayer shawl and kippah on… it didn’t hurt that he was dressed up for the holiday in a black suit. His Kippah and tallit were white, the traditional color for Rash Hashanah, and your dress matched him.
You’d gone to a few holidays with him, and tried to come to shabbat whenever you could, but today was special. Rosh Hashanah was an important holiday and the first time you were going with Steven, and the first time you were going to a service of any kind where his father was the rabbi.
You had met Steven last year in January and were thrilled when Elias invited you both to come to Chicago for the High Holy days, Rosh Hashanah, which was the start of the new year in the Hebrew Calendar, and Yom Kippur was next week and a day of atonement. Rosh Hashanah was a favorite of Steven’s so he would be fronting during services, although Marc would come to the front when people came to talk to him; people he had known in childhood. It was going to be a little difficult for Marc, but he’s said he’s made a lot of progress in recent years regarding his family, and you were so proud of him.
Marc would be fronting for Yom Kippur, a holiday based around atonement for sins. Steven was the one who usually fronted during shabbat, he was the most insistent on staying observant, but Marc and Jake had their days too. Jake liked Purim, and Passover and Hanukkah had multiple days making it easy for them all to get time, Elias knew of all the boys, and although Jake was more guarded for Marc’s sake, Steven was thrilled to help Marc rebuild his relationship as he and Elias got to know each other.
You’d met Elias earlier this week, but were determined to make a good impression at services, following along as best you could and participating where was appropriate as a non-Jew; you were just so thankful they boys were sharing this part with you, and between meeting their dad, Marc showing you around his hometown and celebrating the High Holy Days with them, you felt like a part of their family.
Still, you were nervous. “Do I look okay?” You ask Steven as he adjusted his tie in the mirror.
When he turned to you, his face lit up so bright you couldn’t help but smile with him. “Oh, love!” Steven walked over to where you stood. “You look absolutely ravishing.” He wrapped you up in your arms and kissed your hair so he didn’t mess up your makeup, but his lips trailed down to your neck.
“Steven!” You giggle. “I’m not trying to look sexy, I want to make a good impression! Is this dress not appropriate?”
Marc fronted. “It’s beautiful, baby, so are you. Although you’re gonna wanna wear sandals.”
*
You tried your best to follow along. You didn’t know a lick of Hebrew except a handful of words you’d picked up during shabbat and from what Steven explained to you, but you were trying.
The music was beautiful and kept you engaged, and it was fun to see everyone tapping their feet, even if you weren’t sure when you were supposed to; you followed Steven’s lead for that. Elias has greeted you warmly when he saw you and Steven, and although you didn’t get the chance to talk much (as a rabbi, he had many people to welcome), Steven promised there would be time at home.
During one part, Elias welcomed everyone to wrap their tallit around their neighbor, and when Steven wrapped you up in his tallit you really did feel like a part of his family, a part of him. You and him stayed wrapped up like that even after that prayer was done.
“Steven?”
“Yes, love?”
“Thank you for sharing this with me. It’s beautiful.”
*
After the service, the congregation walked a few blocks down to Lake Michigan for the Tashlich, getting into the sand beach. This is why Marc suggested sandals.
Steven handed you bread. “We’ll say a prayer, and then you think of your sins during the year and tear off a piece of the bread into the water for each sin.”
Jake fronted. “Although considering last night, we might need more than one slice.”
“Jake!” You whispered, gently smacking his arm before taking off your sandles, as Steven took off his socks and shoes. Most didn’t get in the water, but you wanted to wade, to feel the cool lake water on your toes. “We need to come back next summer so we can swim.”
Steven kissed you. “I’d love that. I love everything we do together.”
You then turn to focus on the task at hand, casting the sinful bread into the water to be washed away. You swore Marc had fronted during this cleansing, only confirmed to you by the way he reach out for you when you stumbled leaving the water.
*
Back at the synagogue, there was bread, honey and apples, Steven explaining it was meant to ring in a ‘sweet’ new year. It was delicious, and clearly the people put a lot of care into planning it.
“This apple bread is BUSSIN” You practically moan as you devour it.
Elias’s voice behind you. “Thank you, I made that one, actually”
You gasp, turning around and covering your mouth in embarrassment. “Oh my go- uh, gosh. Shoot, sorry.”
Jake is laughing at your fumbling, but Elias powers through like nothing happened. “It’s alright, did you enjoy the service?”
“Yes! I really loved the… uuhh… Marc, baby, what was that part I liked?”
Marc’s hand was firmly clasped with yours; his stability when he was anxious. “The shofar”
“Yeah, the shofar!”
Elias nodded. “Marc ever tell you he was the ba’al tokeah one year?”
Marc leaned in to clarify that was what the person who blew the shofar was called.
You lit up at that, Marc didn’t play instruments so this was new information. “No he didn’t!”
“And he played Hamen in his Hebrew school play for Purim, have you ever been to Purim?”
Shaking you head, you squeeze Marc’s hand three times in reassurance, and he squeezes it three times right back. You knew any mention of his childhood was contentious, but he had mentioned no wanting to tiptoe around it anymore. “I didn’t go last year, we had just begun dating back then.”
“You’ll have to go some time, it’s definitely a fun one.”
“You gonna take me next year?” You smile at your boyfriend.
He smiled right back. “I think that can be arranged.”
Elias excused himself, needing to see a few more people before the family service that afternoon, promising you had his attention that evening.
Steven stayed firmly by your side. “Are you having a good time? It’s not too much?”
You lean into him, happily munching on some honey covered apples. “I’m having a wonderful time.” Looking at him again, you place a hand softly on his cheek and smile when he keens into you. “I wanna know all the things that make you, you, and this is something obviously important. Thank you for inviting me.”
Steven bought you in for a soft, modest kiss, his lips tasting like honey and you were sure yours were the same. “Thank you for coming with me, and thank you for taking us as we are. All the good and bad.”
"Shana tova, Steven."
"Shana tova."

“and i wake with your memory over me/that’s a real fuckin’ legacy to leave”
The first thing you realize when you wake up is that you’re alone.
Which shouldn’t be as alarming as it is until you realize that it’s not your bed you’re in.
And it’s not your shirt that you’re wearing.
You groan, sitting up in the bed as you look around the room, recognizing the familiar soreness over your body.
The Navy shirt you’re wearing isn’t like the old ones you’ve stolen from your Dad, frayed and filled with holes, the ones that smell like cheap detergent you got from the grocery store in your college town.
No, this shirt is soft and clean and smells faintly like bourbon and leather.
It smells like Jake.
You take a shuddering breath, realizing what you’ve done.
You quickly rifle through the list of people you could ask to bail you out, ones that wouldn’t ask you any questions (at least not immediately) as you lean over to the nightstand where your phone is sat.
The house is quiet, you note, as you scroll through your contacts, searching for the person you know who won’t hesitate.
Reuben.
You and Reuben had gone to high school together, always sort of circling each other without ever really meeting until your senior year when you had both taken a concurrent enrollment class in Political Science.
Penny had also hired him, a few months before she did you, as extra help on the weekends. He worked a bit more now that he’d graduated from San Diego  State University and it was how the two of you had reconnected after years of not talking.
As a “reformed frat bro”, Reuben had always told you that if you ever needed him to pull you out of situation, bad date or otherwise, he’d do it, no questions asked. It wasn’t a favor you hadn’t planned on invoking until now.
I fucked up.
I did something stupid and I need you to come pick me up.
Your eyes flicker to the door as your teeth worry over your bottom lip, the grey bubble popping up almost immediately.
Send me the address.
I’ll be there in ten.
You swipe over the keyboard, sending him the street name you recall seeing on your way back to Jake’s place last night before clicking the phone shut.
Tossing it on the bed, you pull Jake’s shirt off of you, reaching for your pants on the floor. You tug them on, pulling your top on not long after. You grab your phone from the bed before grabbing the boots that had been chucked by the door when you had come in last night.
You pull the bedroom door open, slipping down the stairs hurriedly. You can hear someone in the kitchen but you don’t stay long enough to find out what they’re doing, slipping out the front door as quietly as you can before heading up the road.
You feel slightly silly, fleeing from Jake’s like this as you half-jog up the hill barefoot, but you’d rather end it here before Jake could tell you that you were a nice girl and he had a good time but he didn’t see this moving forward.
It was silly, this schoolgirl crush you’d developed on Jake.
He was a grown man and he certainly wasn’t going to settle down and end his womanizer ways for some fresh faced college girl who had no idea what she wanted to do with her life.
Reuben’s mini-van, the car he’d inherited from his Mom at sixteen, that was barely hanging on, that he named Dolly after Dolly Parton, turns the corner and pulls to the sidewalk as Reuben spots you. You pull the front passenger door open before the car has ever really stopped, earning you a look of surprise from the brunette.
“You good?”
You shake your head, breathless as shame and embarrassment crawls through you. “No.”
“Are you hurt in anyway?”
“Aside from my pride?”
“Do we need the hospital or the police?”
“No.”
He nods, pulling away from the curb. It’s quiet for a few moments as he drives down the road before turning left to head to your house.
“If my either of my Dad’s ask, you picked me up last night from the bar after I got wasted and Alice left me there.” You say, keeping your eyes locked on to the road in front of you. He chuckles.
“You might want to hide those then if you want that story to be believable.” He says, nodding his head toward your chest.
You glance down before pulling the sun visor down and flipping the little mirror open. It reveals a chest littered with hickeys and you briefly recall that Jake had left more hidden by your top.
“Dammit Jake.” You hiss, flipping the sun visor back up.
“Jake? Jake as in Jake Seresin? Jake Seresin as Bagman?” He asks, eyes going wide. When you don’t reply, Reuben lets out a low whistle. “You bagged Hangman. Can I say I’m proud?”
You toss Reuben a withering look before twisting around in your seat, searching for the sweatshirt Reuben keeps in the car. It’s his sweatshirt from when he played lacrosse in high school, something you teased him endlessly for. He glances at you through the rearview mirror.
“On the floor behind your chair.”
You grasp onto the black material, tugging the sweatshirt over your head as best you can with the seatbelt on. It doesn’t smell like Jake’s shirt had, smelling distantly of ocean water and McDonald’s fries.
You blow a stray piece of hair from your face as Reuben laughs at you.
“I thought you didn’t do hookups or one night stands.”
“I don’t.”
“Well, you still went for it. You’ve been pining after Seresin since you got back in town. Good for you.”
You groan, sliding down in your seat. “It’s not good for me.”
“Why not?”
“Because I’m not- I don’t do one night stands because I get attached. I hurt my feelings and I was already attached. I was stupid. I’m not the kind of girl he wants.”
“Did he say that?”
You shrug, pulling your legs up into your chest as Reuben turns down the road leading to your house. “I don’t want to talk anbout this anymore.”
He glances at you but does’t say anything as he drives down your street.
After your parent’s divorce the summer before freshman year of high school, your Dad’s relationship with your Uncle Mav had quickly stopped being a secret. He and Mav had bought a house together your sophomore year, a nice sized house that sat beachfront in a gated community. It was a nice place, with two floors and easy access to the beach from your back porch. It was nicer than your Mom’s place, which was the same one-story, two-bedroom, one bath house you’d grown up in.
This house was so much easier to come home to than your Mom’s had been, despite the fact that in high school, you’d bounced between your friend houses and the park more than you did either of your parent’s homes.
Your Mom had checked out not long after the divorce, disappearing entirely after you started college. What had been your Dad and Mav’s house had quickly just become your home, spending Christmases and breaks with the pair.
You didn’t make a habit of going home too much though, the house consistently being empty with your Dad’s long hours and Mav’s deployments.
Still, they’d promised that after graduation, things would be different. With the Dagger team in San Diego, with Bradley and Mav permanently in San Diego, your Dad had promised they would be better.
Reuben gently shuts off the ignition in the car. “You opening with me tonight?”
You nod.
“Well, why don’t you go in and take a shower and change and then we can go to lunch. Get you some hangover food.”
“That’s the thing, I’m not hungover. I think I had half a White Claw last night and that was it.”
Reuben pauses as he pulls his seatbelt off. “So you hooked up with Bagman completely, stone-cold sober... and you still think it was, what? A mistake?”
You sigh, pulling your own seatbelt off you. “I said I didn’t want to talk about this anymore.”
He follows you out of the car, door locking shut behind you as he follows you up the pavement towards the house. You reach for the doorknob, realizing it’s unlocked as you push it open, the cool air of the AC welcoming you into the home.
Mav spots you first, smiling as he unloads the dishwasher. “Hey hon. We were gonna see you you wanted to go to breakfast but you weren’t here and then Alice came by to see if you made it home after last night.”
You shrug, tucking your hands in the pocket on the sweatshirt. “Sorry, I got super fucked up last night and Reuben had picked me up and just took me to his place.”
“Hey Reuben.” Your Dad says, coming in from the back porch, watering can in his hand. “Hey kiddo.”
“The line dancing was so boring you had to drink to forget.” Reuben says, coming around you to sit at one of the chairs at the kitchen island. You snort, rubbing your eyes.
“Something like that. Hey, I think my shoes are still in your car.”
Reuben shrugs, pulling his phone out from his jean pocket. “You can grab them later. Do you still want to change and go get lunch?”
You nod. “If that’s okay with you.” You say, looking to your Dad.
He hums. “Told you kiddo. You’re welcome to come and go as you please.”
You shrug. “Still feel like I should ask. Give me like 20 minutes so I can shower?”
“Take as long sa you need, I know you still have some of those chai cookies Amelia made so I’m gonna go dig through your pantry for those.”
“Fourth shelf on the left.” Maverick says, setting a plate in the dishwasher.
Reuben gives you a goofy smile, sliding off the chair. “Perfect.”
You breath out a laugh, rolling your eyes as you turn to go up the stairs.
-
“Bagman’s been watching you all night.” Reuben whispers in your ear as you glance up at him from where you’re leaned over behind the bar.
“Yeah, I know.” You whisper back, not daring to spare the blond a glance. “Coyote too.”
He hums, curls bouncing as he stands up. “Hey, after we’re off, you wanna go get In’N’Out and then watch the High School Musical movies?”
You snort, sliding the beer you’re pouring across the bar. “Out of a frat for five months and suddenly you’re all for nights in?”
He shrugs, leaning across the bar as he crosses his arms. “For a Saturday night, it’s pretty slow.”
“Reuben.” You say, giving him a look. “I know what you’re after here and I’m not gonna give it to you.”
He sighs. “Fine, no High School Musical or In’N’Out. Be that way.”
“Why’re you watching High School Musical?” Amelia asks, a confused look on her face as you both turn.
You shake your head. “Nothing.”
“Well, Mom said to tell you’re both free to go.”
You glance at your watch. “It’s only 7:30?”
She gives a half-shrug. “Yeah, Mom said she’s got it from here tonight. I’m just waiting for Ruby to come pick me up.”
Reuben nods, reaching out to ruffle her hair. “Well, have a fun night little Benjamin.” Reuben turns to you as you both move to the back to clock out. “I’m still serious about the In’N’Out and High School Musical, though. I won’t ask you about him, I swear.”
-
You’re two glasses of Peach Bellini from Aldi, a burger and animal-style fries, and two and a half High School Musical movies into the night when your front door opens. You assume it’s your Dads as neither you or Reuben move.
“I wish someone loved me like Troy Bolton loved Gabriella.” You say, your chin tucked into the blanket you’re curled up under.
Reuben snorts. “C’mon, he sets the standard. Pizza and chocolate strawberries? Who could ask for more.”
“Chocolate strawberries and pizza and you consider that romance? The bar is in hell.” Comes Jake’s voice from behind you.
You shift, seeing Jake standing in your living room. He’s still dressed in his work khakis and you force yourself to look away before you get too caught up in admiring how good he looks, pulling yourself off the couch as Reuben pauses the movie.
“What’re you doing here, Bagman? It’s like 1 am.”
He bristles as you round the couch, following after you. “We need to talk.”
“I should go.” Reuben says, standing up from the couch. “Um, bye.” The sound of the front door opening and closing follows Rueben not too long after as Jake places his hands on his hips.
“Let’s talk.”
“We have nothing to talk about.”
“Why’d you leave this morning?”
You turn again, heading into the kitchen and towards the fridge. “Isn’t that what you do after a one-night stand?”
“No. Not us. Not after- You didn’t tell me your dad was Admiral Kazansky!”
You let out a bitter chuckle, shaking your head as you grab a beer from the fridge. “Not exactly a secret. Thought that was the whole point of you going after me.”
“What?”
You pop the beer open, finally turning to face him. “Thought that was the point. You sleep with me, you’ve just found one more way to piss off good ol’ Pops. Get under his skin.”
“That’s really what you think of me?”
“And when have you ever shown me any different Jake?”
He pauses. “Last night, that was real. And I- I really like you.” His voice drops to a whisper as he takes a few tentative steps towards you.
“Yeah, I’m sure you loved the chase Seresin. And now that you got what you wanted, the satisfaction that you were the one to fuck Admiral Kazinsky’s only daughter and child, you win.”
“That’s not- That’s not what any of this was about!” He exclaims, looking around in bewilderment.
“Then why’d you leave me alone this morning?”
“I was-” He bows his head. “It’s stupid.”
“No, tell me. I want to know!”
“I was making you breakfast! Okay? I was making you breakfast because I remember Rooster told me one time you liked to make yourself breakfast sandwiches. I was making you breakfast. And I was hoping that while we ate breakfast, we could sit down and talk about this like adults because I really like you.”
You let out a laugh. “Oh, I don’t believe that for a second. Making me breakfast? You do that for all your hookups or just the ones you want to keep in your back pocket?”
“What the hell are you even talking about? I was going to ask you out on a date! I- I wasn’t even sure if you’d go for me, a guy who’s a decade older than you, that’s why I never said anything before!”
“Oh, that’s rich coming from Mr. Carved By the Greek Gods.”
“Why are you searching for the worst meaning in everything I say?” He asks, throwing his hands up in frustration
“Because!” You snap.
“Because why?”
“You don’t get it, Jake. You don’t know what it’s like to know you were only born because of what your Dad couldn’t have. You have no idea what it’s like to grow up with your parents in a loveless marriage. You have no idea what it’s like to be the kid who everyone tells their kids to be friends with so you’ll tell your Dad their family is cool and maybe he’ll give their Dad a promotion. You have no idea what’s it’s like to not be invited around because people are afraid you’ll snitch. You have no idea what it’s like to be cozied up to just for a promotion. You have no idea what it’s like, to be a kid of one of the greats, with the expectation to become a great yourself. You have no idea what it’s like to have a legacy you have to follow knowing you don’t want a single piece of it. You have no idea what it’s like to know that the kid that isn’t even theirs will always be better than you because he took the path you didn’t want.
Happy endings don’t happen for me, Jake Seresin. So why should I pretend this is any different?”
Jake stares at you as tears roll down your cheeks in fat lumps. The front door opens again, Maverick’s voice echoing through the house. “Kiddo? You home?”
He comes into view as you lift up the collar of the sweatshirt you’re wearing to wipe away some of the tears.
“Is everything okay?” You hear your Dad ask.
“I was just leaving.” Jake says cautiously and you hear him walk towards the front door as you avoid eye contact with Maverick.
“What’s going between you and Lieutenant Sereisn?” Your Dad asks sharply and you sigh, dropping your head.
“Nothing. I’m going to bed.” You say, sucking in a deep breathe as you walk past them.
-
“So... I was thinking.” You say, pulling the carton of orange chicken from the plastic bag.
“Dangerous thing in this family.” Maverick jokes, pulling out the chopsticks.
“What if I quit my job at the Hard Deck?” You ask, keeping your eyes locked on the meat in front of you.
Your Dad hums as he opens the teriyaki broccoli. “I distinctly remember us agreeing that you would have a job if you were going to live here after graduation. Things don’t just get handed to you, you know this.”
“I remember the job being a suggestion, not a requirement.”
“What’s wrong with the Hard Deck?” Maverick asks, pulling out his chair out from the table. “Someone giving you trouble or something?”
You shake your head. “No, nothing like that. I just want to try out something else, you know? Like volunteering with the Midway, like we talked about over winter break?”
“You could do both, but you’re not quitting your job. Not if you expect to live here, nope, no way.”
“Ice...” Maverick whispers under his breath. “Honey, he doesn’t mean that-”
“No Mav, I’m serious. My parents didn’t hand me everything and I’m certainly not going to hand her anything either.”
“No, no one gets handed anything unless your name is Bradley Bradshaw in which case he gets handed everything because Mav and Ice feel guilty over his Dad’s death.”
Bradley’s head flies up from where he’s picking through his stir fry at your words.
“That’s not fair.” Your Dad says sternly, pointing his chops ticks at you. “We paid for UVA because the agreement was that he’d join the Navy after he went.”
“Well maybe I don’t want to be in the Navy!” You snap.
“And that’s fine-” Maverick tries, voice soft.
“Is it? Because I’m starting to get the idea that it’s not.”
“We should leave.” Comes bob’s voice, a quiet whisper. “This is family stuff, we shouldn’t-” You look over to see some of the pilots standing near the front door where the dining room is.
You huff, chair screeching against the floor as you stand up. “Don’t bother. They’ve got their happy Navy family. Doesn’t include eme.” You push past Hangman and Coyote on your way out, front door slamming behind you.
As you walk down the sidewalk, you can hear Jake’s voice call out for you.
“C’mon, where are you going? You don’t even have any shoes on.”
“Go away Jake.” You call back, wincing at the heat of the pavement, baking in the San Diego sun all day.
“Come here, will you at least put shoes on for me?” You turn, seeing him holding your flip flops that you usually chuck precariously by the front door that Maverick always trips over when he comes home. “Please.”
You sigh, holding out your hands as he tosses you the shoes. You slip them on as a silence settles between the two of you.
“This wasn’t always just about me.”
You let you a bitter chuckle, letting your arms fall to your side. “Nope, you caught me. I actually have daddy issues which is insane considering all he’s ever done is love me.”
“Just because they love doesn’t make them any less absent.” He says, taking a cautious step towards you. “You know, the house always feels too quiet when they’re gone. You grow up knowing you got to be just like them, knowing they’ll see anything less as a failure, even if they’d never say that out loud. I know you, a little too well. Because you were wrong that night. I know you. I know what it’s like. You’re at least better than me and put your foot down and told them that wasn’t what you wanted.”
“I don’t know if I’d say that. I’m 22, I have no idea what I want to do with my life, and here I am picking fights with my brother figure just because I’m mad for something he can’t control.”
He finally closes the distance. He reaches out for your cheek, guiding you gaze up to meet his sea-glass eyes. “I should’ve done this right from the beginning. Ask you out on a date, bring you flowers, take you somewhere nice. I never should’ve let you think this was just a one-night stand. I just always liked how easy it was with you. How fun it was. I reveled in the fact that you’d blush when I would flirt with you. Your cheeks would go scarlet, almost maroon, you know? But you were just-” He shakes his head. “I just liked you.”
“Jake...” You whisper, pulling back from him. “We’re over a decade apart from each other.”
“I know that.”
“My Dad would kill you.”
“I know that too. But hell, darling, I’m willing to try for you.”
“I can’t believe we’re doing this right now.” You say, shaking your head.
He sighs. “You’re right. We’re not doing this right now. We can discuss this later. Right now, you need a friend. And because in all your storming out glory, I’m assuming you forgot your phone, so... can I call anyone for you? Reuben? Bob, maybe?”
You shake your head again, reaching out for his hand.
“You, Jake. I just want you.”
-
He watches the door shut behind Jake as he turns back to the group of pilots. “Anyone want to cough up as to why my daughter’s acting so weird?”
Natasha throws up her hand in defense. “I know nothing.”
Mickey shrugs, looking at Bob. “She hasn’t said anything to us.”
He eyes Javy, who’s suddenly staring the cream white ceiling like it’s the most interesting ceiling he’s seen in his life. He steps a few feet closer to him, catching the man’s attention.
“Lieutenant Machado?” He shrugs, sticking in his hands in his pockets as he continues to walk forward. “You want to cough up to what’s going on between Lieutenant Seresin and my daughter?”
“Not particularly. Bro codes and all that.”
He fixes Javy with a look. “Hm, okay. And what about the code of doing what your commanding officer asks?”
Javy withers under his look. “They um- they hooked up. Slept together.”
It’s dead silent in the room for a minute before he speaks again.
“I’m going to kill him.”

Part 1 Part 2 Part 3
3 days before- Monday 6:07 PM
The Bradshaw-Seresin family, the Bradshaws, and the Kazansky-Mitchells were at dinner. This was a traditional family get-together. They all gather at the Kazansky-Mitchell household, each week it changes. Everyone was enjoying a good meal that they all contributed to. Friendly chatter was going back and forth.
"I have a game this Friday. I was hoping you all would be able to make it." Y/N said in a happy go lucky voice. She knew they had busy lives but if they made a promise they usually kept it.
"Of course, we'll be there Chick! Your grandma and I wouldn't miss it for anything." Goose said with an equally happy voice.
"Sunshine of course we're going to be there." Mav said and Ice nodded his head agreeing.
"Sweets, you know your dad and I will be there! We love watching you play!" Jake said.
"Pops do you promise to be there?" She asked knowing how busy he can get.
"Yes, Darling. I promise." Jake replies to her while looking at her with a smile.
"What time is it again?" Bradley asked just wanting to make sure.
"7 PM." She said looking at him with excited eyes.
Present- Thursday 6 PM
"I have a meeting tomorrow at 6 PM so I won't be home until late.” Jake said as he took a bite of his pot roast that Bradley threw into the crock pot before heading to work that morning, Y/N stopped eating and so did Bradley.
“Tomorrow as in Friday? Are you sure it’s this Friday?” Bradley asked knowing that Y/N had a game that day. Jake stops eating and looks at him.
“Yea it’s this Friday.” Jake said confused
“I have a game at 7 that night.” Y/N said a little heartbroken. Bradley looked at her and it broke his heart. He hated seeing her cry or get upset. It hits Jake full force.
“Aw, shit. It is isn't?” Both of the other occupants nodded their heads while he brought his hand up to his face to rub it and run it through his hair. “Well the meeting is at 6 PM, I can go to it and get to the field on time.” He said, sounding sure of himself.
“Jake, her game is at 7 and your meeting is at 6 and you know how long those meetings take. You’ll never get to the field on time.” Bradley says coming to defend his daughter.
“Would you just lay off of me for a second? I forgot about the game.” he replied angrily at Bradley.
“How could you forget? Are you stupid? It’s on the calendar on the fridge and everyone has been talking about it including Warlock. You promised!” Y/N said getting upset that her Pops had forgotten about her game. He never forgets about one.
“Y/N/N this meeting is very important to your Pops. Your dad can record the game and we can watch it later.” everything he was saying was just making her angry.
“What about me and my game, isn’t that important to you?” she asked, getting upset and Bradley could sense but knew to stay out of it and jump in when needed.
“Yes, Darling that’s even more important to me.” he replied getting frustrated but he needed to go to this meeting.
“Then don’t go to the stupid meeting.” she knew it wasn't stupid but she was angry and saying what was coming to her mind right then and there. Bradley could feel the tension between both of them but he supposes a fight like this was bound to happen, they were both too much alike and so stubborn.
“That’s enough young lady.” he said pointing a finger at her and getting to his boiling point.
“You know what? Don’t come to my game. Go to your stupid meeting that is more important to you than me.” she said getting up from the table and storming off up the stairs to her room. Jake got up and started to follow her, leaving Bradley sitting at the table.
“Hey where are you going?” she stops briefly
“I don’t want to be around you! I don’t want you to come to my game!” she yelled and continued up the stairs.
“Oh come on Sweets, you’re important to me and so is the game.” he said stopping at the end of the stairs and her in the middle. She huffed and turned around and he followed.
“Y/N, come back here. We’re not done talking.” he yelled, raising his voice. Meanwhile, Bradley had pushed his plate back and had his head on his arms trying to block it out since he hated when his little family fought.
“No! You can’t tell me what to do! I don’t have to listen to you!” Y/N yelled as she was at the entrance of her door and so was Jake. She turned around when he roughly grabbed her, a little too rough and wouldn’t let go but she was too fired up to say anything.
“Yes you do!” he yelled back, grip getting tighter on her wrist and she winced but he didn’t notice.
“Why should I!?” she yelled back trying to remove her wrist.
“Because I’m your father, that’s why you have to listen to me.” Fire was in his eyes and so it was in her eyes too.
“So what!?” she yelled
“Don’t you dare yell at me Y/N and I mean it!” He said as his temper was rising, so was hers.
“I’ll yell at you all I want! Go to your stupid meeting that’s more important than your daughter! I hate you! I wish I died instead of Dakota! I wish I wasn't your daughter!” she yelled, still trying to pull her wrist out of his grip. Jake’s temper was at the boiling point
“Well, I hate you right back, you little shit! You took my sister away from me, my friend for life and I just want her back! So, maybe they should’ve saved her instead of you!” he yelled and instantly regretted it once her face fell and that’s when the pain of him gripping her came full force and tears started to fall.
“Get off of me! You’re hurting me!” Once Bradley heard that he shot up from his seat from downstairs and took the stairs three at a time and came to a scene that he never wanted to see, his husband holding his daughter’s wrist in his hand with force and tears streaming down her face but he couldn’t see his. He quickly rushed to them and was trying to pry him off of her. “Get off of me! You’re hurting me!” she yelled again not noticing her dad there trying to help her.
“Jake, let her go. You are hurting her.” he said calmly knowing yelling wouldn’t help and that’s when Jake realized what he was doing and let go and instantly she cradled her wrist. His face showed a mortified look, he swore from the day she was born that he would never lay a hand on her like his father did to him.
“Sweets, I’m sorry.” he said any trace of anger was gone. He went to go and hug her but she stepped back and he was looking at her and she had a terrified look on her face with tears running down her face pointed right at him, he never wanted to see that look on her face again. He hurt his baby girl, his sweets, his little girl, and the light of his and Bradley’s life. She saw Bradley there but wasn’t looking at him; it was all pointed at him.
“I hate you.” she whispered but they heard it, and knew she didn’t mean it but it knocked the wind out of Jake, with tears down her face. He tried to go towards her again but she just slammed the door shut and locked it but they could hear her crying.
“What the hell is wrong with you?” Bradley asked and that’s when Jake turned to him finally noticing he was there. Jake didn’t answer, just simply turned around and walked downstairs and went to the couch and held a pillow with tears rolling down his face.
“Honey, can you open the door?” Bradley knocked on the door, no answer. He decided to try one more time “Please open the door. Pops is gone.” That did it and the door unlocked he walked in, he shut the door as Y/N sat on her floor in front of her bed, he went and joined her he opened his arms and she climbed into his lap and started to sob. Bradley just hugged her and stroked her hair “Shhh it’s ok. He didn’t mean it. You’re important to him and he loves you.” he said in a calming voice and pressed kisses into her hair. She just cried and cried until she fell asleep. He looked at her wrist and didn't feel anything broken and luckily no bruising either. Bradley got up and put her into bed, luckily she changed before supper after taking a shower, he tucked her in and kissed her forehead, and walked out of her room turning around to look at his daughter before turning off her light and cracking her door.
He walked down the stairs and stopped at the bottom to look at his broken husband and his heart broke again. Bradley just leaned up against the wall.
"She said she hated me. I hurt our little girl." Jake said, staring at the blank TV screen. He had heard Bradley come down but didn't look at him.
"She didn't mean it and you know it." He told him as he walked over to his husband and sat down and opened his arms as he did for Y/N and Jake practically fell into them. "I looked at her wrist and didn't find anything." He continued "Did some hurtful things get said? Yes. Are you both going to love each other any less? Absolutely not." He paused as he felt Jake grab his shirt. He looked down and noticed that the pillow had been knocked to the floor.
"I grabbed her. I hurt her. I swore I wouldn't hurt her like my father did to me but yet I did." Jake said with tears falling down his face. He heard what Bradley said but it was coming in one ear and out the other. Bradley sighed and squeezed Jake just a little bit and then released and dropped a kiss to his head.
"Head up to bed. I'll be there in a minute. I'm just going to put the food away." Bradley said, giving him a little nudge. Jake was numb and nodded, not having any fight left.
"Ok. I love you." He said as he was getting up and started leaving.
"I love you too babe." Bradley said standing up and going into the kitchen to start cleaning up. He heard the door shut and then he began to relax knowing both of them were safe in bed. He stood in the kitchen for a minute and ran his hand down his face and then put his hands on his hips and looked around, once he saw everything cleaned and put away turned out the light and made his way upstairs. He checked in on Y/N and she was still sound asleep, once he was satisfied he walked into his and Jake's shared bedroom getting ready for bed not even bothering that both he and Jake forgot their phones downstairs, since their daughter was in her room asleep. He climbed into bed and Jake scooted back into him and they both fell asleep.
The thunder rolls and the lightning strikes are what woke Y/N up at 3:30 in the morning. She got up out of bed and headed downstairs but not before seeing if her Pop's and Dad's door was shut not a soul was in sight. The house was looking like a ghost town and she was ok with that. She went into the kitchen and it was clean, then the fight came back to her. She couldn't stay in the house, she just couldn't. She silently pulled on her shoes and was thankful neither of them set the alarm and grabbed the keys to her truck, well her Pops' old truck that she can use. She goes out the door and quietly shuts it, thankful that the bedrooms are upstairs and the garage is by the kitchen, she starts it up and heads out. It's pouring down which is unusual for California. The fight keeps playing in her head and starts to cry, in hindsight, she knows she shouldn't drive but she just couldn't stand to be there any longer. She wanted to be with her Grandma and Grandpa Goose.
Her eyesight is blurring with tears when she sees blinding headlights coming right at her before she can swerve. They hit her head on and made her truck spin out of control and hit a guardrail sending her truck tumbling down the road 4 times before coming and landing right side up. Her head had hit the window and now the steering wheel made her disoriented. Glass is everywhere and the truck is almost unrecognizable. Everything turns black.

Tumblr media
People would always say you were a carbon copy of your father, Jake Seresin, and you more often than not you found yourself agreeing. You shared the same wit and personality. But the thing that really proved you were your father’s daughter, was that you caught boy’s attention the same way your dad caught the attention of women. You never asked for it, but it was always thoroughly entertaining to see the various ways boys would try to get your attention. Despite you having the choice of most of the boys in your grade at school you had your eye on one guy in your grade. Liam Clark was one of the most popular guys in your grade. He was good-looking and captain of the football team. He was one of the only guys not constantly hitting on you, so you figured he wasn’t interested and so just minded your own business while admiring him from afar.
One day however, when you were at school, you were getting books from your lockers when Liam popped up behind you, asking your friends if he could talk to you alone. Your friends were hesitant at first, but you reassured them that you’d be fine and catch up with them in a bit. When your friends left the two of you in peace, he leant against the locker next to yours and glanced down at you.
“So, can I help you with something?” You ask lightly, closing your locker after you’ve gathered the books you need.
“You can actually. I wanted to ask you if you wanted to go out on a date sometime? You’re pretty cute and I’d love to get to know you more.” He asks coolly, his lips turning up into a smirk when he notices the blush covering your cheeks.
“Uh… yeah! I’d love to!” You manage to say after being rendered speechless for a couple of seconds.
“Great. Does Friday work?” He asks, raising an eyebrow as you nod. At your agreement he nods and tells you he’ll message you on Instagram later with more details before backing away and heading off to his next class, leaving you a blushing mess.
Nearing the end of the school day it was finally sinking in that Liam asked you on a date and you were buzzing. You couldn’t believe it and you just couldn’t wait for Friday to come. When you got home that day, your dad instantly noticed that you were happy and asked you what got you in such a good mood.
“I just had a good day today that was all.” You replied with a grin before heading upstairs to do your homework and wait for Liam to message you.
The next day felt like it flew by. It was Thursday which meant tomorrow was the day you had your date with Liam, and you just couldn’t wait. He’d been telling you about a nice diner along the seafront which sounded great to you. At the end of the day, you made your way to your locker to put your books away after the final bell and you were already planning how to convince your dad to let you go out. Maybe you’d speak to Phoenix and Bob, and they’d help you talk to your dad about it. As you neared your locker you walked past an empty classroom and heard the familiar voice of Liam and his friends as they laughed.
“I still can’t believe it was that easy to convince her to go on a date.” Liam laughs as he folds his arms across his chest, being jostled by his friends as they laugh too.
“Just gotta get her to admit she likes you and get that kiss and the twenty bucks are yours.” One of his friends says and your heart drops into your stomach at the realisation of what was going on. You were a fucking bet.
“Weren’t you saying her dad’s one of those Navy guys, right? So I bet she’s never had her first kiss, so you really have to pull out the ‘nice guy’ act. Maybe if you meet her dad you have to be all ‘yes sir, no sir’ with him.” Another one of his friends teases, all of them mockingly saluting and jostling each other as they laugh again. Just as you decide to move away from the door, you get noticed.
“Seems we have some company.” Someone points out, every guy in the room turning to face you as you fight back the tears that threaten to build.
“I guess she heard all that?” Another guy says, pushing Liam forward to speak as he laughs and tells his friends to quieten down.
“I mean I don’t know what you expect me to say, y/n. Did you really think I would really go out with someone like you?” He scoffs, biting back a grin as his friends make comments behind him.
“He’s not wrong, Seresin. He’s captain of the football team and you’re just… well there’s no way to describe you is there.” One of the guys says as he claps Liam on the back.
“Fuck you.” You manage to spit out before turning on your heels and retreating. You shoved your books away before rushing out of the school building and making your way home as quickly as you could while tears began to blur your vision. When you finally reached your house, you were relieved to see your dad’s truck wasn’t in the driveway which meant he was still at Top Gun, and you wouldn’t have to deal with his questions. You enter the house quickly, slamming the door behind you before kicking your shoes off and darting upstairs. The second you reach your room you abandon your bag on the floor and curl up on your bed, sobbing into your pillow as the words that Liam and his friends said swim around your head. You pulled your spare pillow over your head as if that would protect your brain from the cruel thoughts that were beginning to seep into your brain. You cry until you physically can’t anymore and just as the tears start to slow you hear your phone buzz. You move the pillow from on top of your head and pick up your phone, seeing a text from your dad.
‘Hey y/n/n. We’re all at the Hard Deck so you’re free to come down whenever.’
As you read the message you were tempted to say you weren’t feeling great and wasn’t feeling up to a trip to the Hard Deck, but this was a weekly thing you did with your dad and Dagger Squad, and you figured if anyone on the planet could make you feel better it would be your dad and his team. You send him a message, saying that you were just going to freshen up and then you’d be on your way. You head into the bathroom and splash your face with cold water to make it look less like you’ve just been bawling your eyes out and once you were confident that you looked okay, you grabbed your phone and head back downstairs to put your shoes on and head to the Hard Deck.
When you arrive at the Hard Deck you take a deep breath before you head into the bar and immediately locate your dad and his team. They were, as usual, around the pool table and dart board and you made your way over to them giving them a small smile when they noticed you. Coyote immediately brought you into a hug and ruffled your hair like he always did but he failed to get anything other that a half smile and a weak hug back. When Rooster greeted you, he got a similar treatment, you gave him a weak hug and greeted him quietly. It seemed to be how you were greeting everyone, even Hangman when he returned from the bar with drinks. The gathered members of Dagger Squad talk amongst each other as you sit at a table with Bob. Bob tried to make conversation with you but when he was met with no reply, he just fell silent too. He didn’t want to leave you sitting alone so he just remained by your side, silently offering his support. Eventually, you grew thirsty and got up, first crossing to your dad.
“Hey dad, I’m pretty thirsty so I’m just going to grab a drink from Penny.” You say, standing in front of your dad as he takes his shot at the dart board.
“Okay, kid. Just stay in our sight, okay? Make sure at least one Dagger can see you.” He says and you merely nod and walk away as Jake raises an eyebrow. Usually, you groaned and sassed back that you heard that sentence every time you were at the Hard Deck. Without fail, he would always tell you to remain in the sight of at least one person from Dagger Squad just in case Penny was occupied with serving other people in the bar. And without fail when he told you this, you would roll your eyes and say he already told you a thousand times. He was worried about the way you were acting and from the expressions of his teammates, they were equally as worried as he was.
When you made it to the bar, you waited patiently for Penny to get around to you and when she did you ordered a lemonade, not bothering to argue when she tells you it was going on your dad’s tab. You used to argue back, saying that you could afford a drink, but both your dad and Penny said you didn’t need to be paying for that when he’s around. As you waited for Penny to make the drink, you heard some people enter the bar and the second you turned to see who it was out of curiosity, you regretted your action.
“Hey look, it’s Seresin.”
Upon hearing his last name being yelled across the bar, Jake perked up. He glanced over his shoulder, expecting to see some of the new Top Gun recruits that he was instructing. Some of them were worse than he used to be and would happily call him by his surname rather than his rank or callsign. When he didn’t catch a glimpse of anyone familiar, he was about to turn around, assuming whoever called out would come over to him eventually but just as he was about to turn back around, he caught a glimpse of you by the bar being hounded by a group of boys who looked to be about your age. They were laughing and jokingly shoving each other, and you looked like you wanted to cry and that alone shoved Jake into dad mode.
“Rooster. Coyote. Come here.” Jake says quickly, getting his friend's attention and heading over to the group of boys with Coyote and Rooster hot on his heels after noticing what was going on.
“What’s going on here?” Jake asks when he reaches you, the three men standing protectively by your side.
“Nothing, dad. It’s fine.” You try to say, knowing if your dad interferes the teasing will just get worse since Liam and his friends will think you can’t stand up for yourself.
“It’s clearly not fine now what the fuck is going on?” Jake demands, glaring at the boys in front of you. You were unsurprised to see that the boys were not at all intimidated by your dad, Rooster, and Coyote standing in front of them. Any other person would be terrified to be stared down by three of the Navy’s best pilots, but like any teenage boy Liam and his friends thought they were invincible.
“It’s between us and her, so why don’t you mind your own business.” Liam says with a roll of his eyes as the three aviators share a look.
“You made it our business when you messed with y/n.” Coyote says lowly, taking a step closer to the boys before being pulled back by your dad.
“I mean if you’re all that desperate to know then I guess I can tell you. We bet Liam here twenty bucks that he couldn’t take y/n out on a date and get her to admit she liked him and kissed him by the end of the date. She overheard us at the end of school today and she ran off crying. Pretty pathetic if you ask me.” One of Liam’s friends explains with a proud smile on his face, the others gathered laughing as the aviators clench their jaws in an attempt to stop themselves from punching them. You felt your eyes well up with tears when the explanation is said, and you feel a gentle hand on your shoulder, and you look up to see Rooster looking down at you softly. He gives you a gentle smile of reassurance before he turns back to the group of teenagers.
“You look familiar.” Rooster states calmly, looking Liam up and down before thinking to himself for a minute.
“Yeah, you’re definitely familiar. I’m sure I saw you the morning we boarded the carrier before we shipped out for the uranium mission.” Rooster continues, smirking to himself when he sees Liam and his friends grow worried. Most kids around here were the children of Navy personnel and on days when they’d ship out, families would be surrounding their loved ones, wishing for them to come home safely. Hangman and Coyote caught on to what Rooster was talking about and they all began to think of who Liam’s parent could be.
“I got it! It’s Captain Clark, right?” Coyote says the moment the name comes to mind, and everyone notices Liam’s face paling at his words.
“I know him. I’m sure he won’t be pleased to hear that his prized son we hear him bragging about has been acting like an asshole.” Rooster says with a smirk, folding his arms across his chest as the boy's exchange worried looks with each other.
“Please don’t tell him. I’m sorry!” Liam pleads, making the aviators scoff lightly to themselves at how quickly he begged for forgiveness.
“What’s going on here?” Penny asks after noticing the commotion. She didn’t miss the way the three aviators had strategically placed themselves protectively around you and the boys in front of them seemed to be around your age.
“One of these asshats decided it would be funny to ask our y/n out as a joke for a quick buck. I don’t know about you Penny, but I don’t take kindly to people who treat my daughter like that.” Jake says, not removing his glare from the teenagers who are shrinking more and more under the intense gaze.
“Well then. Fellas, would you do me the pleasure of escorting these boys off the premises? And you lot are not to come back.” Penny says, first to Hangman, Rooster, and Coyote before directing her last sentence at the boys who nod quickly and allow the naval aviators to shepherd them out of the Hard Deck. As they do that, you take your drink and make your way to a quiet table in the corner of the bar, but still in sight of Dagger Squad who watch you worriedly.
When the aviators made it outside the bar, they stood opposite the teenagers for a moment, staring them down one more time.
“Don’t ever let me find out about anything like this again.” Jake growls lowly, his protectiveness over you glaringly obvious as he stares down at Liam.
“If I ever hear about you guys treating her like shit again, you’re not going to like the person I become.” Rooster follows up and Jake looks over at him, his jaw dropping slightly and a faint blush coating his cheeks when he sees the fire of protectiveness shining in Rooster’s eyes. Jake knew Bradley had no reason to care about you, yet he did. He’d only known you since that evening in the bar before training for the uranium mission began but you’d formed a tight bond with him, and it made Jake happy which he had never expected when he first discovered Rooster had been called back too. After Rooster takes a step back from the teens, they scamper away with their tails in between their legs.
“Teenagers.” Coyote scoffs, clapping both men on the shoulder before turning around and heading back into the Hard Deck. Rooster and Hangman share an amused look before turning around to head back into the Hard Deck too. When Jake locates you, his hard expression softens when he notices your heartbroken expression as you stirred the straw in your drink half-heartedly. He excused himself from Bradley and the others and made his way over to you.
“Hey, sweetheart.” Jake says softly as he eases himself into the seat next to you.
“Hi, dad.” You reply, not even looking his way and your voice monotone. Just as he opens his mouth to talk you beat him to it.
“Don’t you dare ask me if I’m okay.” You continue, your voice cracking as you fight back tears from rolling down your cheeks.
“I wasn’t going to.” He was lying. He wanted to see if you were okay after what just happened but clearly, you weren’t, and it broke his heart.
“C’mon, let’s step outside for a few. It’s quieter.” Jake says, gesturing for you to follow him outside which you do reluctantly. Once you exit the bar, Jake leads you down to the beach, sitting on the wall and staring out across the ocean as you mimic his actions.
“I’m sorry those dicks did that to you. You deserve better than that.” Jake starts, his voice gentle as he speaks as you bite your bottom lip to fight back the tears.
“I really liked him, dad.” You admit in a whisper, the tears now dribbling down your cheeks just as Jake turns his head to look at you, causing him to pull you into his side and wraps both arms around you protectively.
“I just don’t understand why they did that.” You mumble against your dad’s shoulder, your arms wrapping around his middle to cuddle closer.
“Because boys are jerks, that’s why.” Jake says, a small smile appearing when you release a small breathy laugh at his words.
“Listen to me, sweetheart. Boys do stuff like that because they’re dumb idiots. They just don’t know how beautiful and amazing you really are. y/n/n, you are so loved, and you’ll always have me and the Daggers around. And one day you’ll find someone who likes you as much as you like them. And I’ll really want to hate them, but I can’t because I’ll be able to see how much they love you.” Jake continues, rubbing a hand up and down your back to help you calm down slightly.
“You better not scare any potential boyfriends away, dad.” You say, moving away slightly to look your dad in the eyes as he shrugs and grins.
“I’m your dad. It’s my job to do that. And it won’t just be me, you know? All of Dagger Squad, even Mav will be doing it. Because we love you so much.” Jake says, tugging you back into his arms as he chuckles at your light groan. You knew your dad and his team would absolutely do their best to scare anyone away because of how protective they are. You knew they were doing it out of love and that you could always rely on them, no matter what.
Your dad and Dagger Squad were the most overprotective people you had ever met in your life, but you wouldn’t change them for the world. Especially when they had your back with things like boy problems.

Do you want a skittle, Mommy?
Tumblr media
Jake 'Hangman' Seresin x f!reader
Part of the 'Spitfire' Universe
Can be read as a standalone but makes more sense if you've read some of the other stories.
Potty training started the moment your son Eli was even slightly interested in the potty. You definitely didn’t encourage Jake to convince him that peeing in the potty was the coolest thing ever and you definitely didn’t have the rest of the dagger squad tell him the same thing every time they saw him. So the moment Eli was interested you were throwing the family headfirst into potty training. He was two. It was time. And with a new baby on the way? Yeah you needed him out of diapers. Buying one size of diapers is enough.
Potty training was easy at home. Being a stay at home mom was extremely helpful for potty training even with you being 7 months pregnant. A couple child size potties around the house and you were golden. You’re pretty sure Jake was a little jealous of his son’s toilet that sat right in front of the TV. You shut that down before Jake even thought to ask if he could also pee while watching football.
Going out while potty training wasn’t really hard either, especially if you were out with your husband’s co-workers since there was always someone willing to run Eli to the bathroom.
Your only potty training hiccup was when you had gone down to Texas for Thanksgiving this year…
Now you love Jake’s dad. Love him to pieces. He’s amazing. After all these years he’s been more your father than your actual father ever was. You couldn’t ask for a better grandfather for your son. He’s a wonderful Pop Pop to Eli and dotes on him every chance he has. Eli thinks he’s the best grandfather in the world(as long as Grandpa Mavvie isn’t in the room, then it’s a toss up to who at that exact moment is bribing him with the best stuff). You know living on a ranch in Texas is a different lifestyle than your own back in California, you just wish Pop Pop would have thought of that before teaching your son your least favorite new habit.
“Mommy! I go potty!” you hear Eli call from the living room after the song playing on the tv was paused.
You stop rinsing dishes and wipe your hands on the towel hanging from the oven door then head into the living room, “Okay buddy, let’s go potty. Maybe we could use the bathroom this time?”
“Outside!” Eli yells while racing to the back door with your dog, Radar, chasing after his little legs.
Ugh. Outside. Your son’s favorite bathroom.
Potty training had been in full swing when you last went down to Texas for Thanksgiving. Jake’s parents were both on board to help potty training while you visited. Pop Pop had taken Eli for a walk around the ranch one afternoon while you were there  and showed your son how he can pee outside and since then outside has been your son’s favorite potty. Eli especially thinks it’s super cool that he and Radar now share a “bathroom”.
You’re very proud of Eli getting better and being able to hold it until he’s outside but you just wish with everything you are that he’d pee in a bathroom. A real bathroom. An inside bathroom. With a toilet.
You sigh as you walk to the backdoor and push the door open enough for your son and dog to both race outside to pee. Thank goodness you bought a house with a privacy fence. You watch your son as he strips off his shorts to go pee then you turn and gently bang your head on the door frame. You have no idea how you’re supposed to stop this. Maybe you should get him one of those fake grass patches for dogs who are inside all day.
“Sure hope you’re not hurting my best girl,” a voice from behind you says, causing you to jump and actually bump your forehead on the frame.
You groan and rub your forehead, “I wasn’t until you scared me.”
Jake fakes a pout as he walks over to you and from behind he wraps his arms under your baby bump and kisses your head then maneuvers you both so you’re facing outside, “I’m sorry, darlin’. I thought you heard me come into the house.”
You shook your head, “Sure didn’t. You’d think someone as tall as you would make more noise.”
Jake chuckled, “I’m not Rooster but if you want me to lumber about I’ll sure try my hardest for you. Anything for you, darlin’.”
You roll your eyes at your husband’s words, not that he can see, then close them reveling in your husband’s arms practically moaning as he lifted up on your belly to lift some of the pressure off your stomach.
“That sounds more pornographic than when we…”
You then hear a small voice call from your backyard cutting off his daddy’s sentence, “Daddy! Look! I’m peeing! Outside! Daddy! Look!”
“I see you, Eli. Thanks for the update. I’m sure the neighbors all wanted to hear about your bathroom habits, son,” your husband calls back to your son who grins at his father as if this is his greatest accomplishment. Jake groans against your hair murmuring about how he hopes Mr. Andrews next door isn’t watering his garden right now.
“That’s your dad’s fault you know,” you say to Jake as you point at your son who is now chasing after your dog without putting his shorts back on, completely uncaring about the slight chill in the air.
He grumbles, “Yeah, yeah, I know. And I’m trying to fix the damage he’s done. I've been asking around if anyone has any ideas on what to do.”
“Any good ideas? I mean actually good ideas. I can only imagine the things that might come out of their mouths.”
Jake snickered then shrugged, “Phoenix suggested having him decorate his bathroom so maybe he would be excited to pee in there. Maybe go online and see if there's some Bluey bathroom items or something.”
You consider it for a moment, “Not a terrible idea. Grass can’t be hard to beat. And we all do love Bluey.”
“No, I hope grass isn’t more exciting than Bluey. It’s Bluey!,” Jake says while softly swaying the two of you from side to side as you watch your two hooligans run around the backyard chasing after each other. “Payback said that his sister gave her daughter a treat every time she used the potty.”
“What kind of a treat?”
“Like a sticker, a skittle or an M&M something small like that,” Jake said as he continued to sway.
“Bribing our son to use the bathroom? He would probably like that,” you reply. You don’t tend to give Eli candy often. Well you and Jake try not to. The rest of your extended family including the Dagger squad however don’t share those same ideas. You’ve caught Payback sneaking Eli gummy bears more than once saying he couldn’t resist those green puppy dog eyes of his.
Jake nodded, “I figured. Picked up a giant bag of skittles on the way home from work. Thought we might as well try it.”
And so you did. Eli was excited to get a skittle every time he went to the bathroom. He loved getting to pick out all the fun new things for his Bluey/Spiderman/Plane bathroom. Jake loved to show off the bathroom retheme to his buddies which pleased Eli to no end because clearly if Wooster loved his new bathroom then it had to be the best bathroom in the world.
You finally felt like you had a handle on this potty training thing until you went to today’s preschool story time at your local library. Eli loved going to the library so you tried to make it to every story time.
You were a little apprehensive about this week’s story time already due to the word your son picked up from Fanboy recently when Fanboy made his feelings about Santa Claus known to everyone and said, “Fuck Santa!” due to not getting a toy he wanted. Last Christmas. When he was very much an adult. So now any time Santa is mentioned near Eli he announces to everyone listening, “Fuck Santa!”
You may have mentioned this to the librarian last week and she made sure to pick out a Hanukkah book. Thank goodness.
Afterwards, because you know not to tempt fate, you made sure to hit up the bathroom since the baby in your belly loved to play footsy with your bladder.
After your son peed you made sure to give him his well deserved skittle and then after you used the bathroom, in his adorable little voice he asked you, “Do you want a skittle, mommy? You went potty all by yourself like me!”
You chuckled and got yourself one too.
When you both stepped out of the stall a mom you didn’t know was washing her hands with her daughter.
She turned to you as you approached, “You know I didn’t have to bribe my daughter to be potty trained. Maybe your son just wasn’t ready. My daughter was potty trained in no time at all.”
You stood there for a second, flabbergasted. Who in their right mind would care that much to comment about another person’s child?
You shook it off and made sure to smile at her, “You know I might give my son a skittle for using the bathroom because he clearly earned it but at least I’m never going to have to worry about my son being nasty to someone he doesn’t know.”
From beside you came a little, “Yeah! If you jealous I got a skittle you can have one too. It’s nice to share.”
The mom scoffed at you and picked up her daughter who whined at her mom for wanting a skittle as they walked out.
You gave your son a giant kiss on the cheek for that before you helped him wash his hands.
Later that evening when you told Jake he laughed and told you he wouldn’t be so lazy all of the time and wait to go to the bathroom if he got a skittle every time he went which Eli made sure to let his daddy know that if Jake wanted a skittle every time he went potty then he would be more than happy to share his skittles with him. Yeah, no doubt in your mind that your son isn’t going to be anything but the nicest boy in town forever.

Top 5 Oscar characters most likely to be yanderes? 👀
Ooooh here we go. In no particular order:
• Blue Jones
He's possessive as hell, relationships for him will be part of his status and control is notoriously a big part of who he is. Blue wants to know where you're going, now long you'll be there, what you're wearing, etc. Sometimes he might not let you leave, not for a particular reason, just to exercise control.
Blue picks what you wear too, treating you like his perfect doll. Since you'll live in the Lennox club you'll have his guards eyes on you constantly, so anything you do will be reported back to him. You live in the palm of his hands, and he'll lord that over you, letting you know he paid for that pretty dress and the roof over your head, if it weren't for him you'd be on the streets. Hell even use his customers as proof that no other man will treat you as well as he does since he technically doesn't bend you over a table without at least a warning.
• Steven Grant
Steven could end up a yandere without even realising. He has no real relationship experience, through Marc, Jake and his parents he doesn't even have any examples of what an average, healthy, stable relationship looks like. All he knows is Marc's deep but repressed feelings, so when it comes to his own love he's got so much pent up but doesn't want to repress it, he wants to show it. Steven will read all the romance novels, not knowing it's not reflective of real relationships, and take his que from those.
Expect him to be over bearing, smothering you in love, hugs, constant affirmations, accidentally objectifying you. He's absolutely obsessed with having someone love him and having someone to love. If you ever try to leave? You're talking nonsense, you loved him before, you cant stop now, hes not going to risk losing you. Will definitely get frantic and do something he regrets in a panic, like chaining you to a wall. That won't make him unchain you though, in fact it's probably for the better, you can trust him to take care of you.
• Nathan Bateman
Another man who loves having control, but instead of Blue being more sly about it, teasing you with the open Club that's actually a prison, Nathan has you completely isolated. This makes it much more easy to completely brainwash you.
I fully believe Nathan would make you dependent on him, leaving you locked in a room when you misbehave. He's the only other human you have, completely cut off from everyone else, it'll be easy to make you cling to him.
When you act out he makes an android version of you and dotes on it in front of you, especially when you're locked in clear, glass room. Nathan will show the android more care and affection than he shows you until you're sobbing and begging to get back into his good graces.
• Leto Atreides
I was hesitant to put him here but in my mind it could happen in a few specific scenarios. Being the Duke of an entire planet, the Emperor of the Universes favourite guy but also his enemy, throw in the trauma of his first wife killing his first born in a jealous fit and also his mother figure killing his dad for the same reason, Leto has gotta have some issues. That's a lot of pressure and relationship drama.
House Atreides have honour, a trait Leto likes to represent, but that isn't without flaws. This can lead to, as we see when he gets KO'd in Arrakis, being blinded by determination, blinding by pride.
If you were his favourite concubine or wife, in a period of high political stress, like during Arrakis, if things get rough I can see him snapping. He'll hold it in, trying to remain the figure of calm reason and all it'll take is one Harkkonnen threat towards you or you taking initiative and making a meeting with political heads to aid Leto, then he snaps. You'll be kept strictly in a private wing because you're his and he cannot lose you, will not lose you to the threats plaguing House Atreides from every shadow. Leto loves passionately, deeply and values loyalty and he will know that's his weakness. You're his heart, so he'll keep you locked away from the outside.
• Shimmer!Kane
I lean towards the theory that clone Kane is more primal and caveman like, he has only base human instincts when he's fresh out the Shimmer. This means he will have base instincts towards a partner.
All he has in him is a feeling of connection towards you and the concept of "partner". To him that just means you are his. Since his emotional understanding is very limited, this just manifests as him being possessive, not recognising boundaries.
I'm not much for a breeding kink, but he will breed you, that's just his understanding of humans and might even be programmed into him from the Shimmer. He might even coddle you, taking over any labour you're doing whether that be putting jars on the top shelf or carrying something upstairs. You'll likely end up feeling like a human pet for him to study and possess.
I know William Tell or Jake Lockley or Basil Stitt would've been popular choices but personally, if I was to be truly honest, I can't see it in canon (although I love it Fanon wise).
For William, I think hed too self loathing. He can barely make himself be in a normal, loving relationship and doesn't allow himself the pleasure of sleeping on a normal bed. If William dated someone and suddenly felt himself becoming possessive, controlling or any real overly strong emotion that wasn't pure love he would bolt. William knows what he is capable of and hates it.
For Basil, I think he's just too... pathetic. I don't think he has it in him to be controlling, he's too submissive. He might try, but you'd shout or tell him off and he'd buckle. He'd just sit and cry if you did something to upset him or left. Might spam you or stalk your socials but that's it.
For Jake, I think he'd check out if his emotions ever got that intense. I don't see Jake allowing himself a relationship while he's still keeping to himself from Steven and Marc, but if he was open I still see him being wary. In a scenario where he does have a partner and feels himself becoming too obsessive or controlling he would ghost and never come back. His commitment is to the body and by extension Khonshu, for your own safety and his head mates he'd split.

And, Honey, I’ll Make It All Okay
Dad!Jake “Hangman” Seresin x female reader
Tumblr media
Summary: Jake might be getting used to his mother being around you and his baby girl, but he still had zero interest in allowing his father within a hundred miles of his family. Sometimes, though, things happen that aren’t in his control, despite how desperately he needs them to be.
Warnings: Alcohol, hints of alcoholism and past abuse (not physical), cursing. Protective Seresins working together like the damn power rangers.
Notes: Suggested by an anon / Part of the Oh, Baby Universe. A follow up to It’s What You Make It
Words: 4060

“So, this little one is a Seresin, huh?”
Jake looked up from the book in his lap—the one he’d bought when he realized he was two whole months behind you in parenting knowledge and felt a desperation to catch up quickly before he ruined his daughter's childhood. He set it aside, meeting his mother's raised brow.
“I was told you legally changed her name,” she continued as she bounced Eve on her lap, gentle jolts up and down making the girl giggle.
The memory of his birthday present that held within it so many promises of the future you’d share was still strong. He thought of it every morning, loving how it entered his mind like clockwork the second he looked down at your sleeping face beside him. You were in it with him for the long haul—you and Eve—and you’d made it so wonderfully known in a way that could not be outdone.
Jake smiled, not just at the reminder of your gift, but for many reasons. For the happiness on his daughter’s face as she sat with her grandmother, for the ease with which you and his mother got along, for the way she proved to so seamlessly blend into his family over the last four days. He smiled because he had every right to. Just as he had every right not to tell her about his daughter’s change of name.
Despite obviously gaining your trust, she had yet to fully gain his. He wanted to let that door stay open, but she’d be back in Texas within a day, and there was no guarantee she could keep his secrets upon her return home. And if his father knew the choice made over Eve’s name, he wouldn’t be able to keep himself away.
That was the last thing Jake needed. The last thing you needed.
“Yea,” he said, swallowing, sitting up a bit straighter in the leather armchair. “We did.”
“Anyone else’s name you plan to change soon?”
Jake hesitated. He hadn’t planned to tell his parents. Not about any of it. Not where or how or when he chose to propose. Not about the ring he had made months ago. Not about his wedding, his marriage. Not anything about the details of his life after the bridge they’d set aflame. And he still wasn’t sure his mother had earned the knowledge, but Jake couldn’t deny how obvious he made his intentions without so much as uttering a single word about it. He wanted you, forever, and not a soul with two eyes would think otherwise.
“Um—I’m working on it.”
“Do you have a ring?”
“I do.”
“Good.” His mother gave a firm nod. “She’s perfect for you.”
That was an understatement, he thought. It was not enough. Perfect for him, truly, but somehow more, too.
Shaking his head, he said, “She’s everything. She and my baby girl are absolutely everything.”
His mother was silent. Her wide grin traveled from her son to the girl in her arms when a tiny hand reached high to touch her cheek.
“Sweet girl,” she sighed, taking the little hand in hers.
Eve was the first to accept his mother.
From the moment their eyes connected a bond was formed that Jake could never fairly break, whether he eventually learned to give his complete trust to his mother or not. Though Eve was so young, there was no doubt in Jake’s mind that she would feel the absence of his mother if they were no longer in one another’s lives. But maintaining that relationship would come with conditions—requirements—mostly along the lines of keeping his father away from you and Eve at all times, in every way possible.
Of course, there was an additional possibility; one his Gram had suggested despite it going against the will of her own son. And you hadn’t argued it, instead leaving the choice to him. A choice that once offered, he really couldn’t go back on. But it was also an opportunity that if taken would actually mean something—a massive leap in the right direction.
Jake leaned forward in the chair, resting his elbows on the tips of his knees and clasping his hands. They wrung slowly, nerves exposed through the subtle act.
“Mom,” he began. He sucked his bottom lip between his teeth and nibbled lightly on the chapped skin. She took her eyes off the girl. He released his lip. “You should stay,” he finally said.
There was a brief flash across her irises. She was just as surprised at hearing his suggestion as he was when deciding to speak it. Her lips quirked a tad, but a moment later they fell back into their natural line, the slight downturned shape making the pinch between her brows seem all the more disheartening.
“Sweetheart…” She sighed again before hugging her granddaughter closer.
“Let me help you. I can find you a place close by,” he said, finding himself rushing his words from a sudden need to convince her. “You and Dad separated once. You can—”
“Jake, stop.” She stood fast, sharply, impressively without stirring Eve, and closed the few steps between her spot on the couch and Jake’s chair. Carefully handing the infant over, she said, “I think I’ll find your Gram and take her to lunch.”
Her voice was meek on that last bit, too much like her approach with him days before when she showed up out of nowhere begging to be a part of his life. She smoothed the nonexistent wrinkles of her skirt and turned on her heel.
“Just think about it,” Jake said to her back, and from her stuttered step he knew she heard him. “Alright?”
She said nothing. And walked on.
You’d been itching to get him alone all day. Jake saw it in your consistent stare that wandered from his grandmother to him whenever he was in range of his mother. But his Gram had occupied your time—his mother Eve’s—and he wasn’t able to give you the chance to drag him away like you had so clearly wanted. In your shared room, though, nothing kept the two of you apart. And while Jake had plans—plans that would definitely require him holding his hand over your mouth from your inability to keep quiet (which, without his mother and grandmother in his house, he would’ve loved)---you had other ideas.
“Did you ask?”
His brow arched at the childlike curiosity you were trying to contain; at how you were a fraction away from bouncing on your toes in anticipation for the answer. Not with excitement, but with an anxious intensity that seeped through the innocence of your question. He nodded. “She didn’t give me an answer.”
And in that same childlike theme, your face fell into a pout. You sighed and plopped down on the mattress, the nightie that barely covered your mid-thighs rising higher. Jake’s fingers twitched to slide along the smooth expanse of skin, but you sighed again and your hands slapped down on those thighs in some odd form of defeat that Jake didn’t understand, and he couldn’t help but notice the distress on your face.
His mind switched within an instant. Your worry his worry. And he crouched in front of you, taking one of your hands in his.
“Honey, what’s wrong?”
You shook your head but he didn’t buy it.
“You really want her to stay?” He examined your face. The frown, the pinched brows, the bitten lip. It was not a look he ever cared to see. “Why so badly?”
You rose quickly, unintentionally knocking him off kilter. You reached a hand out to help steady him, which he took and refused to release even as you tried to begin your pacing. It was only one step that you took before Jake twisted you, wrapping you in his arms to calm you down.
“Honey…”
You were staring up at him, waiting; for what, he didn’t know, but he waited just the same. Until you were ready.
“Jake, with Eve I felt so alone. I had her and I loved her so much—so much—but my mother wasn’t easy on me. Living with her wasn’t what I wanted. I wanted to be with you. I wanted my family to be with you. And I just…” You took a breath, looking away from him. His knuckle under your chin made gazes lock again. “I see that in your mother,” you continued. “She’s told me about your dad, and I thought if she had the choice she would stay here, with us…with Eve.”
The tenseness in his shoulders from your distress loosened a tad. “It was your idea? I thought—”
You shrugged. “Your Gram knows your mother better than I do. I figured if she was the one to mention the idea then you’d be more likely to consider it.”
He couldn’t find his words. Jake's heartbeat sped at a pace he instantly recognized. The pace he'd felt when he first saw you behind the bar at the Hard Deck. The same pace when you walked into Rooster's house with Eve. The pace that told him he was in love with you, then and now.
He pulled you closer, and with a hand sliding behind your neck, he kissed you. You squeaked into the unexpectedness before settling into it, letting your fingers curl into the fabric of his t-shirt at his waist. Jake was thorough, savoring. Your lips sweet against his, tongue lightly teasing, hand weaving into your hair the way he knew you liked. He wanted to give you everything in that kiss. Because in you was that “more” he wasn’t quite able to explain. Perfect for him…but somehow more. It was the part of you that other people didn’t have. The part that took on responsibilities that weren't yours, and tried to protect people that hadn’t done the same for you. A kindness that was so fucking rare. So unbelievable.
You broke the kiss well before he was ready, a question on your face.
“I love you," he said, cupping your jaw, thumbs stroking your cheeks. He shook his head, like he always did when he paused for a moment to take in his life. Never would he have imagined the luck that had washed over him. The luck to have found you, to have you want him as much as he did you, to share a daughter with you. Jake wasn’t known for picturing much of a future with any woman until he saw you, and the very idea of not having met was a tight knot in his chest. It was impossible now. No one could go back in time and change the course set, but even the thought of what might not have been was too much for him to take. "You are so—"
A knock on a door silenced him.
Jake counted three seconds and the sound repeated. He hadn’t misheard.
His hands fell away from your face as both your heads whipped to the bedroom door.
His daughter was asleep—that was his first concern. His baby girl was trying to get her rest and that booming through the walls of the house might've been enough to wake her.
Then he recalled the hour.
"Who in the—"
"Stay here," Jake ordered as he stepped toward the door, a hand extended behind him, palm up and facing you to try to stop what he knew was coming.
"No way." You were already tying the strings of your silk robe at your waist.
He sighed, looking back. "Honey—"
"No."
It boomed again.
Jake winced, waiting for the high-pitched wails from down the hall. They didn't come so he left the room and began down the stairs with you at his heels.
"Will you at least stay in the kitchen?"
"No, Jake."
"Jesus, woman,” he huffed. The hall?"
He could feel your glare at the back of his head. "...Fine."
"Thank you."
That created at least twenty paces between you and whatever was on the other side of that door. He wouldn't be able to get you any farther away, so that would have to do.
The noise grew louder with each bang—a beast trying to break through the door as Jake walked closer and wrapped his fingers around the knob. A piece of him screamed to turn back, pretend it wasn't there until it went away, but the territorial part in him said this was his house, his woman, his baby, his family, and he wasn’t going to be hiding in his own home.
He eased it open just the slightest. But even that was too much.
His father shoved his way into the house in such a flash of movement that there wasn’t time to react. Jake stumbled, his back hitting hard against the wall. He grunted and looked up. His father stood still, chest rising and falling heavily under a tailored, buttoned jacket while his eyes scanned over the length of you.
Jake didn't have a second to take in the shock of his father's presence. He shifted into defense. "Don't you dare look at her," he growled.
His father gestured lazily in your direction before meeting Jake's murderous stare. "Your whore, I'm guessing?"
The hitch of your breath practically echoed, the soft whisper somehow strong enough to bounce off the walls.
Jake instantly felt the shame of it; of failing to keep the secret of his father's disgusting opinions from revealing. And that sound that left your throat cracked his heart right down the middle.
His father tsked. "So transparent."
Jake stepped forward and slammed his hand into the older man's shoulder, forcing his stance away from you and towards him. "Get the fuck out of my house."
"Nope," he chuckled, or something mildly akin. It was sloppy, jumbled together. An odd sound barely recognizable as a laugh.
And then Jake could see it. He could hear it. Could practically feel it. "You've been drinking," he said.
"Airlines are generous for men like me; you know that. Now, I'm here for your mother." He cupped his hands around his mouth. Took a deep breath. "Eliza!"
"Jake…"
Your voice quivered, drawing Jake's eye. Eve began sobbing upstairs from the incessant screams of his mother's name. Panic coursed through his veins at a rapid rate.
"Honey, go to Eve."
"But—"
"Please," he begged, but you hesitated. "Honey, please."
You'd barely made a move before his mother was walking into the room, her granddaughter tucked in her arms and mother-in-law following behind. His mother's face didn't alter at the sight
of her husband.
"Here," she said, handing you a hiccupping, wet-faced Eve. "She needs her mother."
She made her way down the hall and smiled sadly when she reached Jake. Her hand rested on his bicep and she lightly squeezed. "And they need you." She nudged her head in your direction.
"Mom—"
"Go to your family. This is not your responsibility."
Jake glanced at his father; at the smug look on his face ever so slightly veiled by an alcohol-induced haze.
Looking back at his mother, he said, "It's not yours, either."
"We're leaving, Eliza."
His father was growing impatient, and his mother continued on as though she wasn't concerned with the ticking time bomb just feet away from her. She was, as usual, handling him the way she did best. Calmly. Cleverly. A true professional in an art no one would ever have ambitions to hone.
She nudged Jake over until he relented and did as she asked. "John," she sighed, turning to him, "you do not want to be arrested in a different state. You'll be fired within the week."
"You're not calling the police."
"Jake will," she replied. "He won't give it a second thought. You're scaring his family."
"His family." Jake's father scoffed, crossing his arms. "An insignificant woman and a child that isn't his."
Your eyes snapped up to Jake's and he hugged you tighter, Eve nestled between your bodies. He knew he'd have to explain it all because you'd undoubtedly demand it of him. And he owed you that, at the very least. Even though the very thought of speaking it aloud stirred his stomach and made him wish there was something, anything, he could sacrifice in return for not having to tell you. He’d willingly snap one of his own bones if it meant he didn’t have to see your face twist in pain and anger and shame, but it was too late for that.
"She's his, John," his mother insisted. "And you need to go."
"Then get your things."
"I'm staying."
"The hell you are!"
It was then that Gram shot herself out from the sideline, a short ball of fiery fury, hands clenched at her sides. "Enough!"
Jake’s father squinted as if there were a true flame assaulting his vision, but when his altered brain caught up with him, his eyes widened, his head jerked back, he stared at his own mother like he was seeing her for the very first time. As he was, Jake understood then. His father hadn’t sensed her there amidst the scene he was making.
Jake didn’t know how his father came to learn of where his wife had gone, but he clearly hadn’t expected the same betrayal from the woman who raised him. And such an older man—a man who had always embodied power and force, determination and demand—was just barely restraining himself from shrinking where he stood.
“I tried so hard,” Gram said, practically shaking, from anger or angst Jake couldn’t say, “to keep you from being like this. I didn’t want you to be like him. I tried so hard and I failed so greatly, and I don’t know how, because I put everything I had into it,” Tears were streaming down her cheeks, one of them dropping onto the hardwood floor. She sniffled. “Jake is not like you, or the men who came before you. And thank god he has always been strong enough to keep you from ruining that.” You buried your face into Jake’s neck as she spoke. “He’s a protector; He does his job. And I will do mine. So you aren’t taking anyone home, I am taking you home.”
Shock fell across her son’s face too quickly to have the chance to be concealed. His lips parted, then they curved to form words. “You don’t—”
“Jake, dear,” his Gram started, head turned to the side to help carry her voice over her shoulder, “Would you call us a car? Surely there is still one available at this hour.”
You took a sudden step forward and Jake instinctually wrapped his fingers around your arm to keep you and his daughter close. “Eve, we aren’t going to let you sit in an airport until you find a flight back to Texas,” you said.
“Eliza I and were leaving first thing in the morning anyway. We will take her ticket. She will stay. We will go.”
“I’m not going anywhere!” Jake’s father snapped. He hadn’t bothered to notice his wife making her way closer to their son. He hadn’t so much as glanced at his new granddaughter. Jake wasn’t surprised. His father rarely paid attention to anything. Giving something attention meant acknowledging it was real which meant deciding whether or not to care. He didn’t care. He never did. And it had been decades since much attention had been paid to anything other than himself and the control he refused to relinquish.
“Then Jake can call the cops instead,” Gram stated. The tears were gone, dried in lengthy lines down her face, but her tone conveyed her heartbreak. “As your mother, that is not what I would prefer, but one way or another you are leaving this house. Tonight.” She inhaled, expelling the heaviest of sighs through her nose. “So, what is it going to be, son?”
He watched you from the doorway as you leaned over your daughter’s crib, brushing her wispy hairs out of her face before running your finger softly along the plush cheek. You hadn’t said a word when his Gram and father left. You let him kiss your temple and the top of his baby girl’s head, then you were slipping from his arms to put your child back to sleep as if the night were any other.
Jake felt lost in the mess—everything he didn’t want you to witness accompanied by the man he never wanted you to meet. The man he came from that he was terrified would make you question just who the father of your daughter might be capable of one day becoming. It would kill him…losing you. Like pliers yanking out chunks of his heart bit by bit until he was left with nothing.
You finally straightened your spine and Jake stepped up behind you, curling his arms around your waist and pulling your back flush against his chest. Need your touch, he thought. As much of your body against his as could be managed. Your hand settled on his forearm when he began to press slow, gentle kisses from your jaw to your neck to your shoulder.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered between each meeting of lips and skin. “I’m so sorry.”
Leaning your head back into his shoulder, eyelids closing, you said, “It wasn’t your fault.”
“He came into our home. Insulted you. Scared our daughter.” His hold on you tightened. He inhaled you. “I swore to myself I wouldn’t let anything like that happen.”
Your eyes opened and your head lifted and you met his close gaze. “Baby, we’re alright,” you swore. “We’re safe.”
He wanted to shake his head.
“Look at her,” you said, shifting your line of vision to the baby girl in her crib. “She’s safe. She’s perfect.”
“And you?”
Lightly chuckling, you said, “Intact, if you can’t tell.”
Any other day, he would’ve laughed with you. He would have smiled. He would’ve kissed you and taken your teasing for unintentionally getting carried away. He would’ve led you back to your shared bedroom and you’d have fallen atop the mattress and continued kissing and stripping clothes, and you’d get lost in enjoying one another as you so often easily did.
But this wasn’t any other day.
“I’m not like him,” Jake whispered. “I won’t ever be.”
Despite his hold on you, you spun harshly in his arms. Your brow furrowed. Anger? Confusion? He guessed both. “No, you won’t,” you stressed. “That goes without saying, Jake.”
When he didn't respond, your hands cupped his cheeks. “Jake, I know you better than anyone. Had that man not shared your eyes, I would never have believed you came from him. Do you understand me?"
Your soft palms, warm and gentle, and your sweet words, nice and thick like a coating of honey over his body, completely threw him off the edge of the cliff he’d been teetering on all night. His nose stung. His eyes felt pressure under the threat of tears. So many tears were shed in his home in such a short period of time. A new one escaped and your face shattered.
“Oh, baby,” you cooed, swiping the droplet away with your thumb. “Come here.”
You unraveled yourself from him and he hated it, but then you took his hand and encouraged his steps closer to the crib. Reaching in, you lifted your sleeping daughter, nestling her against your breast. “Kiss our girl,” you said, “Because she’s safe.”
Jake sniffed and swallowed and leaned down to press a long kiss to Eve’s forehead. You nodded and returned her to her little bed, then took his hand again and led him to your bedroom. When you closed the door you faced him, dropped your robe, and walked back into his space, into the cocoon of his arms.
“Now kiss me.” Your voice was low in the nonexistent space between you. But there was a neediness woven through the words. A neediness he understood incredibly well. “Because I’m safe.”
Lips met. Your arms circled his neck. His fingers slipped under the hem of the silken fabric you wore, thin material rising as his hands moved further up your body. More skin, that’s all he wanted. Just…more.
When you pulled back, he rested his forehead on yours.
“We’re always safe with you Jake,” you muttered. "And we won’t forget it."
