The Favorite
dad!Jake "Hangman" Seresin x reader
Tumblr media
Summary: The Daggers meet your and Jake's baby girl for the first time and arguments over who will be her favorite aunt or uncle quickly follow.
Notes/Warnings: part of the Oh, Baby Universe, but can be read alone. Based on a suggestion from @tgmreader
Words: 1288
Between the ‘She’s like your clone, Jake,” from Nat, the ‘Is anyone else surprised Hangman beat us to the baby train?’ from Bob, and the offended ‘Wait, you two were hooking up and you didn’t tell me?’ from Javy, Jake is clearly exhausted. Not that he didn’t anticipate being worn out after introducing his daughter to his team, you both did, but the last forty-five minutes have far surpassed expectations.
Being confined in a room with the Daggers historically proves to have its drama—whether in the form of unnecessary argument or playful teasing—but with your new baby girl at the center of everyone's attention, drama has started to take on new meaning in the form of obsessively watching Eve as if she might start doing tricks or giving you both grief for not spilling every detail of your ‘sneaky, secret relationship’ before this moment. To your relief, though, they’ve steered clear of asking questions about your absence over the majority of the past year. They don’t push, knowing that information will be revealed with time.
“It’s just…” Mickey begins as his eyes snap back and forth from the baby to Jake, “...so weird.”
When you chuckle, Jake rolls his eyes. “It’s not weird,” he counters.
“It’s pretty weird, man. You’re, like, a dad.”
“Lots of people are dads,” Jake says as he runs his knuckle down the cheek of the infant in your arms—his new little love.
“Yea, but you’re the dad of Y/N’s baby.”
As Bradley snorts at the obvious, you look to Jake to check on the effect of Mickey’s unfiltered words. His eyes are on your face and you smile to soften the sudden twinge of uneasiness speckled amongst the various green flecks in his irises.
Though Jake has expressed mental security in his place within the lives of you and your child, you fear what might occasionally be running through his mind. The last thing you want infecting his confidence is the consideration that maybe this situation is weird, that maybe he isn’t meant to be the father of your baby because he wasn’t intentionally chosen for that role.
Eve wasn’t planned. You can’t change that. And the choices you made when you discovered your pregnancy are enough to have any man reasonably questioning himself. But there is no other man you want as your baby’s father. Jake is it. You’re pretty positive he was always meant to be it, because your brain refuses to picture another in his place.
Jake’s stare breaks when Bradley starts to speak. “We all knew how these two felt about each other, even though they were doing nothing about it,” he says, shooting you and Jake a smirk so quick it’s barely acknowledged before he looks back to the group of pilots. “I promise you guys, once it fully sinks in, it won’t feel so wild that they accidentally made a tiny human.”
Nat’s head snaps up from Eve, but her finger remains wrapped in the infant’s smaller ones. “When, exactly, were you given enough time for it to sink in?” There is suspicion in her tone. Then her eyes go wide. “Did you already meet the baby?” she asks before turning to you and Jake. “Did Rooster meet her before the rest of us?”
As if sensing the shift in the room, Eve lets out a little whine and starts to wiggle in your hold.
“Yes, Nat,” Bradley answers for you. You can feel the sass bubbling around him as his arms cross over his chest. “By a whole three days.”
“Three days matters,” she retorts. “It could be the difference that makes you Eve's favorite. The earlier the interaction, the better.”
“She’s only a few months old. You might still have a chance, Nat,” Reuben chimes from the sideline.
“Don’t bet on it,” Bradley snorts. His sass is so expertly conveyed you’re shocked his tongue doesn’t stick out to accompany his words.
You’d scold him if not for the fact that these two often enjoy ruffling each other’s feathers when the opportunity arises. It’s all in good fun, but sometimes, depending on the topic, the teasing aspect goes over their heads.
You suppose it’s flattering that being your child’s favorite is enough to cause a bit of an upset, but it’s wasted energy. Jake will be Eve’s favorite. The Father and The Favorite are not mutually exclusive, and you know in a room full of the people she loves most in the world, Eve will never fail to run straight into her father’s arms.
Nat, however, does not consider that inevitability as she carefully slips her finger from Eve’s to face the six-foot-tall brunet head-on.
Jake mutters a curse, fingers rubbing across his forehead.
With his hands raised, Javy takes a step forward as if to prevent a physical altercation. “Alright, everybody take a breath,” he says. The winning, cocky grin that has tempted a woman or two or thirty is spread across his face. Then he points to himself. “I'm going to be the favorite. I'm her father's best friend.”
“I don't think that guarantees anything,” Bob says, only to receive a scowl in return.
It’s then that Mickey throws his own name onto the ballot. “You know, if we base this on entertainment value, she’ll obviously like me best. I’m the funniest.”
“Also the most irresponsible,” Reuben adds.
“What’s that got to do with it?”
“Um, everything,” Nat clarifies as Bob nods in agreement. “For one, you’ll never be the babysitter.”
“If you were the babysitter you’d need a babysitter,” Bradley chuckles, patting Mickey on the back.
Bob clears his throat and pushes his glasses up his nose. “That is very true; it would be chaos. What baby Eve here could use is a calming presence, and that’s me, so–”
“I’m calm,” Reuben interjects, pulling a scoff out of Javy.
“You also come up with insane ideas that make everyone miserable,” Javy says. “What are you going to do, have the baby compete in challenges only to suffer through two hundred push-ups if she loses?” he asks. “I think that’s grounds for immediate disqualification.”
Reuben’s response is drowned out by the additions of each pilot arguing their case for favorite aunt or uncle, and you’re too drained from the last hour to attempt untangling voices.
Jake sighs and shakes his head before taking your hand in his and leading you out of the living room, up the stairs to where Eve sleeps. You’re thankful that, at some point, despite the noise filling the room where your friends remain, your little girl managed to fall asleep. As you place her in her crib, you glance at Jake.
He’s sitting on the loveseat on the opposite side of the room, one hand running down his face, the other reaching out for you. When you take that hand, he pulls you onto his lap, shifting around until you’re comfortable with your back leaning against the armrest. A palm draws a lazy line of warmth up and down your leg.
“You’re a trouper, Honey,” he says, eyes unmoving from your knee.
You chuckle. “It could’ve been worse.”
“We should’ve done it one at a time; single-file line. The last thing I wanted was for you to be overwhelmed.”
Sitting a little straighter, you reach up to cup Jake’s cheek and guide his face toward yours. “Jake, I wasn’t overwhelmed. I’m fine and so is Eve,” you promise him. “Besides, they’re my friends, too. I knew what we were getting into.”
Jake leans into your touch before turning his head to kiss your palm. “They’re all crazy,” he says.
“Yes, but they’re ours,” you reply. Then you nudge your head in the direction of the crib. “And now hers.”

Mrs. Serensin
A/N: Back again from the dead lol. College is kicking my ass I cannot even lie. Also, I've been pissed at the lack of diversity in fandoms/fan fics until I realized I can literally change that lol so here's my take enjoy. One shot, I wrote wherever the wind took me.
Dad!Jake Serensin x Wife!Reader
Warnings: Smut 18+, established relationship, fluff (Jake and reader being domestic and in love), only minorly proofread.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It wasn't the warm sun on your skin that woke you up. Or even the usual patter of feet and knocking at your door that pulled you abruptly from sleep. It was the feeling of soft lips on your skin. Feather light and if you didn't focus you might've missed them. You stirred softly looking over your shoulder as Jake looked back at you with those gorgeous green eyes you fell in love with so many years ago.
"Morning Mrs. Serensin" He says with that famous boyish grin on his face as he presses a soft kiss to your lips.
"Morning" You mumble wiping your eyes after you kiss him back. "What time is it? Where are the kids?" You asked him. In seemingly no rush Jake went back to his previous role applying warm kisses to the column on your throat and along your shoulder. As much as you wanted to enjoy the moment you couldn't help but anticipate the screaming of children.
"Relax... kids are still sleeping. It's pretty early. It's just me and you darling" He says and some of his Texas drawl slips out making you smile. You lay on your back to properly look at him your hands tracing over his exposed chest down to his defined stomach. His ability to keep up with his physique while parenting three kids always ceased to amaze you. Jake smirks down at you putting his hands on your hips and giving them a squeeze.
"So are you telling me Mr. Serensin that I have you all to myself for the unforseeable future?" You ask smiling at him as he leans in close to you.
"You do Mrs. Serensin. But I don't know for how long so I plan on making the most of it," He says pressing his lips to yours passionately as you wrap your legs around his waist. After your third child, you were scared that yours and Jake's sex life would die down, or maybe he wouldn't even find you attractive anymore. Boy, you couldn't be further from the truth. You could swear that after each kid Jake only began to worship you more.
"You're gorgeous. Always so pretty" Jake whispers to himself when he pulls away from your lip to kiss at your jaw. He then quickly gets rid of his old navy shirt you had on. Slipping a finger up your slit smirking as you whimper. "Always so wet for me mama. I love it." He says pressing his lips to yours again as he slides a finger into your pussy making you moan.
"Jake please. I need you so bad. No teasing please," You beg. The nagging feeling of getting caught lingering at the back of your brain and you don't know what you'd with yourself if this moment between you two was interrupted. Jake slides another finger into you curling them just right to make your eyes roll back as you grab his wrist.
"There you go baby. I got ya. Always gotta make sure you're ready for me." Jake says pressing kisses to your collarbone as he gently pulls his fingers out and takes off his boxers. He guides himself up to your slit teasing you briefly before slowly sliding himself inside your heat both of you letting out breaths of pleasure. "Fuck you're always so tight for me mama. Three kids and you're still tight as the first night we met" Jake breathes into your neck.
One of the many things you loved about sex with Jake was how he wasn't scared to be vocal. You loved all the filthy things he would tell you as he fucked you into oblivion. No matter how many times the two of you had sex it would never get old. And this time was no different as he began thrusting in and out of you, "Yes Jake. Right there baby" You moan your hands finding his back as your nails dig gently into his flesh.
"Pussy's always ready for me. Always ready to take me. Ain't that right baby?" Jake asks as you nod. Usually, he loves to take his time with you, always wanting to make you cum before he even thinks about pleasuring himself. Unfortuantely this morning he didn't have that luxury and there is no way he would pass up an opportunity to watch you lose yourself on his cock. He sits up putting one leg over his shoulder and after a couple of hard thrusts he watches your jaw go slack and your eyes roll back. "There we go mama. There's the spot I was looking for. Feels so good doesn't it baby?"
All you can give him is moan after moan as you spiral deeper and deeper into pleasure. Jake realizes you losing your volume control and presses his lips to yours. "So loud for me. Love when you vocalize how good I'm fucking you baby" He whispers against your lips.
"Jake you're fucking me too good. Don't stop baby and I'll cum. Gonna cum all over your cock" You moan locking eyes with him. Now it is Jake's turn to get lost in your big brown eyes. The same ones he saw everytime he looked at your children.
"Gonna make a mess on my cock baby? Go ahead. Cum for me, I got you" He instructs as he slips a hand in between your body and begins to toy with your clit. That is the final straw for you as you bite softly into his shoulder to control your moans of pleasure. The spasming of your orgasm around Jake's cock has him cumming only a few strokes after you "Fuck baby I'm stuffing your pussy Oh god!" He moans into your ear before relaxing against your body.
You both lay in post orgasmic haze for what feels like forever "We should probably get ourselves together sometime soon before we end up having the birds and the bees conversation a lot sooner than we planned," Jake says making you smile. You run your hands through his hair a few times always trying to maximize the alone time you two shared,
"I guess you have a point there" You say as he smiles looking at you and kissing you "You are the love of my life Mrs. Serensin" He says before slowly pulling out of you as you whimper at the loss of contact. He stands up getting a warm cloth to clean you up with before he uses it for himself. After he does so you stand up so you can start getting ready for the day. You walk over to your closet finding clothes to put on after your quick shower. As you do so you hear Jake whistle behind you making you look over your shoulder,
"Looking good has always Mrs. Serensin. Do you know that everyday we are together you get sexier?" Jake asks as you roll your eyes and go back to the task at your hand biting your lip to hide your smile. You grab a towel before looking at him again,
"You know you don't have to sweet talk me anymore? We're married you know I'll give it to you whenever you want. Also I have a name outside of Mrs. Serensin" You say rhetorically loving that he calls you that all the time and never stops trying to woo you like the days he asked for your number.
"You know better than anyone I love the chase. As long as I'm on earth I'll spend that time hitting on you. You're too hot not to. And if I wanted to call you by your name I wouldn't of married you." He says as you continue to hide your smile from him and walk towards the bathroom. Before he can even ask you say, "No Mr. Serensin you cannot join," you smile as you see him fake pout out of the corner of your eye.
~
"They have the little festival thing in the park we could take them to. Wyatt and Cam loved it last year with the face painting and the balloon animals." You say as you and Jake finish getting dressed for the day almost ready to wake the kids up. Jake walks over slapping your bum gently before wrapping his arms around you.
"Whenever you tell me to go Mrs. Serensin is where I'll be" He says as you roll your eyes. He buries his head in crevice of your neck enjoying the fresh smell of vanilla that is so uniquely you he can smell it wherever he goes.
"Well there's also-" You start before both you and Jake hear a loud crash from downstairs. Both looking scared you race out of your room and downstairs. Jake keeps you behind him the whole time as you walk into the kitchen and see your three children covered in some kind of mix and eggs. Both of your jaws hanging open.
"We wanted to surprise you and make you guys pancakes" Your oldest Wyatt says as you sigh taking a deep breath as you see Jake try to refrain himself from laughing. You hit him lightly in the arm as you get closer to your babies.
"That is so sweet of you guys but next time you can get one of us and we will help you. Just to make sure no one gets hurt." You say picking up your youngest, your little girl Julia as she smiles that big toothy grin at you. "Surprise!!" she says holding her arms out as you hold her at an arms length laughing softly.
"How about daddy helps you guys get cleaned up and dressed for the day while I clean this mess up. After that we will all get breakfast and if you're good go to the park." You say as they all clap in unison. Wyatt and Cam make a dash past Jake racing to the bathroom as you walk over to him putting Julia in his arms.
"Get to cleaning Daddy. There's a lot of work to do" You smile giving him a kiss as Julia cuddles into him leaving Jake stunned and just as dirty now. Yet he can't help but smile at you, then his little girl, and at the life he currently as. Despite the egg yolk on his shirt, and the mess that he can already hear happening in the upstairs bathroom, he swears he wouldn't change his life for anything.
“Mama, are we almost there yet?”
You smiled softly at your daughter, cuddling as close to her sister as the seatbelt in the back of the car will allow her.
“Almost, Liv,” you say gently.
“Okay then, Mama,” your daughter sighs, her head falling onto her sister's, where she is snoozing on Olive’s shoulder.
You smile at your twin girls, who had been so good for you while you drove from your old home in rural Texas, to join their father in San Diego, where he has been more permanently stationed after the success of the last mission he had been called back to Top Gun for. The girls adored their father and it has been a hard couple of months without him, for all three of you. You know it has been hard on Jake too. He acted happy for the girls on their frequent FaceTime sessions, but you’ve known Jake too long to not catch the sadness in his eyes as he read them a bedtime story and watched them fall asleep without being able to tuck them into their blankets, smooth their hair back from their faces and kiss them goodnight.
Which is why you had packed up the girls, and all your essentials three days before schedule, so you could finally reunite with your beloved husband. You have been in contact with the only one of your husband's fellow pilots you’ve met, his friend Javy (or Coyote to his team), who let you know that the whole squad was having a beach day today, which is where you are headed now.
You look around at the houses on either side of the street as you follow the GPS to the location Coyote sent you, somewhere called The Hard Deck. He had texted you that you could park your van in the lot, and then go through the bar (which isn’t open this early in the afternoon, he assured you) to get to the beach on the other side.
Passing under a row of palm trees, you pull into the parking lot of the small beachside bar you have heard so much about from your husband and turn into the open spot in between Jake’s truck and a shiny Bronco.
Putting your keys in your bag, you open your door and climb out, brushing your long skirt out as you make your way around the front of the car to open the door your girls are sleeping next too.
Opening it gently, you brush you fingers through Charlotte’s dark blonde hair, so similar to her daddy’s.
“Lottie, baby, it’s time to wake up, we’re here,” you whisper to her. She stirs a little, blinking bleary green eyes up at you as a tiny hand comes up to rub her face. The arm movement jostles Olive, who picks her head up and yawns.
“Come on, my loves, can you undo your seatbelts and stand next to Mama, so I can make sure you look so pretty to see Daddy again?”
With that question, the identical faces of the best gifts Jake has ever given you light up, as if remembering where they are and why they had been driving in the car for two days.
Within seconds, your twins are standing side by side, bobbing up and down on their toes in excitement as you check that their adorable little matching outfits have not been wrinkled too much by the car ride. Once you re-tie Charlotte’s hair bow, which had come undone in the car, you take each of your daughters hands in each of yours and lead them into the empty bar.
Passing through the doors that lead onto the sand, your girls gape at the sight of the ocean sparkling in the late afternoon sun.
“Mama,” Olive says, mouth hanging open, “it’s so big.”
“Yeah, baby, it goes on for miles and miles.”
“Mama, mama, mama, look!” Charlotte bounces in place next to you and squeezes the hand she’s holding onto. “I can see Daddy!”
You turn to look where she’s pointing and sure enough, a tiny ways down the beach, you spot your husband, throwing around a ball with another man in board shorts. The man throws his head back and laughs at something Jake says.
“Mama, can we go! Can we do the surprise now, please?” Olive asks, so sweetly that your heart melts a little bit as you nod at your daughter.
“Go knock him over with the biggest hug ever, girls!” You say as you start walking again, releasing their hands so that they can run ahead.
✯✯✯✯
“Nice try, Bradshaw,” Jake yells to his friend as Rooster throws a particularly hard ball, causing Jake to have to side step to catch it.
“One day man,” Rooster grins, “one day, I’ll get you.”
Jake is just about to come up with a witty retort when he hears something he thought he wasn’t going to hear for another couple of days.
“Daddy!”
“Daddy!”
Two little voices he knows better than anything. Jake whips around in disbelief, forgetting Rooster and the game of catch in an instant as he spots his little girls running towards him, dressed adorably in little matching outfits.
Jake takes a few steps towards his girls and then drops into the sand just in time for them to come crashing into him, arms going round his neck and bodies thumping into him with such force, he goes sprawling back in the sand with his babies on top of him. He holds them there for a few moments, relishing in the feeling of them in his arms again, their puffs of laughter tickling his neck.
After a few moments, he sits up effortlessly, still holding onto the two five year olds and sets them onto their feet. Pulling out of the hug just far enough to look at their faces, Jake’s right hand comes up to stroke Olive’s hair out of her eyes while his left stays firmly around Charlotte’s waist.
“What are you doing here, you two?”
“We come early, Daddy!” Olive says, her little hand coming up to touch Jake’s cheek.
“Mama said we should surprise you!” Charlotte says, her voice muffled from where she’s pressed her face into her father’s neck.
“Did she now?” Jake asks playfully, looking up just as a pair of legs he knows very well stop in front of him. He lets his eyes trail upwards until they meet yours and he swears, he doesn’t think there will ever be a time where he isn’t affected by that beautiful smile.
“Hi Darlin,” he grins, letting go of his babies for only a moment to get to his feet before putting his hands on their heads as they wrap themselves around a leg each.
“Hey Handsome,” you smirk back, and Jake can’t help but close the tiny distance between you to press a kiss to your lips.
He feels so content in this moment, all three of his girls are finally with him after too long (in his opinion) apart, that it’s a bit jarring when Rooster’s voice breaks through his little bubble of happiness.
“I’m sorry, what the fu….rick is going on here?”
Jake laughs against your lips before pressing one last final kiss to them before pulling away and turning to see the rest of his team, save Coyote, gaping at him.
“What does it look like, Bradshaw,” Jake smirks, as Rooster rubs his ribs where Phoenix evidently elbowed him to keep him from cursing in front of the two little girls still hanging onto their father.
“It looks,” Phoenix jumps in, trying to sound mad, but failing because of the shit eating grin on her face, “like you’ve been keeping secrets, Bagman.”
You’re intoxicating laugh has Jake turing back to you, a betrayed look in his eyes, an over exaggerated pout on his lips.
“Baby?” He whines, purposefully making his bottom lip jut out and quiver slightly. You laugh again, leaning forward to kiss away his frown.
“Oh hush…..now, is your Daddy going to introduce us to the squad, or are we gonna have to report back to Grandma Seresin about his manners,” you say cheekily, leaning down to address the last part of your question to the twins. They both giggle and pull on Jake’s hands, while he stares down at his little family.
“Alright, no need to involve my mama,” he says, grinning, “who wants a ride over?”
Both of his daughters look up at him with matching grins, before Olive reaches up and starts shouting, “Sandwich, sandwich!”
“Oh alright!” Jake sighs dramatically, before taking her hands in both of his and swinging her up onto his back. Once he’s sure her little legs are locked around his waist tight enough that she won’t fall, he reaches down for Charlotte, and lifts her up to carry her on his chest.
With his daughters hanging off him like Koalas, and your hand in one of his, he leads you over to the little congregation of towels the gang had set up earlier that day.
Bob, Phoenix, Rooster, and Fanboy all rise to their feet from where they had been lounging, as Jake approaches with his family. Only Coyote remains on his towel, a fact which makes Jake smirk.
“Everyone, these are my girls,” Jake says, angling his body so that Olive is slightly visible, and Charlotte can see from where her head is back in his neck.
There’s a chorus of heys from the group and Jake feels one of Olive’s hands leave his neck, reaching up to wave at the pilots.
“This is my wife, Y/N Seresin, and these two beauties…..Can you say hi, and introduce yourself, sugar?” Jake asks Olive, bouncing a little so that she holds onto his neck again. She giggles lightly and Jake feels her nod against his shoulder.
“I’m Liv,” she says, “it’s very nice to meet you!”
She mispronounces her v’s slightly, but her greeting is so endearing that Jake witnesses all the pilots melt in front of him.
“And what about you, baby?” Jake asks Charlotte, angling his head so that he can see her face. She shakes her head slightly, her eyes so wide and innocent in her face.
“Are you sure, darlin?” Jake asks. His shy daughter just shakes her head, and turns her face, so that her face is hidden completely in her father’s neck.
“Okay….,” Jake murmurs to her, running his hand up and down her back in circles and turns to his group of pilots.
“This little one is Lottie,” he says.
“Coyote,” you say, taking the focus of the group off of your shy daughter as you call your friend, “are you gonna stay over there, or are you actually going to get up and and come say hello?”
“Ya know, I think I’m good where I am,” Coyote laughs from his seat, grinning.
“Uncle Javy!?” Olive asks, wriggling around in excitement.
“Yeah Livie!” Coyote grins, finally getting up from the ground and making his way over.
“Daddy, down please!” Olive chirps and Jake obligingly bends until his daughter can hop off his back.
The minute Olive is on the ground, she takes off running towards Coyote, and he leans down as she gets to him, and lifts her up, swinging her around in the air as her laughter explodes from her. After she's been swung around a few times, Coyote p uts her back in the sand and pulls you into a side hug.
✯✯✯✯
As the family reunites with each other, and some of the pilots go and begin chatting with Jake and his wife, Phoenix sidles up to Rooster and elbows him again.
"You good, Roos?"
The pilot turns his head to look at her, and she bursts out laughing.
"Oh come on, Bradley, is it really that shocking that Jake has a life outside of the navy?"
"Kind of!"
Phoenix goes to elbow her friend again, but he's ready this time, dodging out of the way as she goes for his ribs, the two pilots laughing as they join the rest of the group getting to know their newest members.
You watch as Jake and Josie play in her room. Jake looks exhausted. He’s been spending time with you and Josie every chance he gets and you have a feeling that sleep is very low on his list of priorities right now. His lids are heavy and he’s hunched over as he moves one of Josie’s stuffed toys, speaking with a funny voice. You really don’t want to interrupt them but it’s Josie’s bedtime and Jake also desperately needs some rest.
“Alright, you two. It’s bedtime.” You say softly. Josie’s mouth turns into a frown right away.
“Nooo, five more minutes! Please, mommy.” She gives you her best puppy dog eyes but you stay strong.
“Not tonight, honey. Your dad’s about to fall asleep on the floor.” You look at Jake, his head resting in the palm of his hand, eyes almost closed and his hair falling into his face.
“Not true.” He widens his eyes in an attempt to appear more awake. It’s not working, especially with his words almost slurred from tiredness.
You roll your eyes, “You two are unbelievable. C’mon.”
You help Josie get ready, and the fact that Jake opts to just stay laying on the floor instead of joining you two says enough.
He jolts up when you return to Josie’s room. “I’m up!” He rubs his eyes and you bite back a laugh.
“Sure you are.”
After saying good night to Josie and closing the door, you look at Jake and without thinking twice about it you say, “You should sleep here tonight.”
“What?” his eyes widen and this time he really does seem more awake.
“There’s a guest bedroom.” You point at the door.
“Oh.” His shoulders droop a little.
Shaking your head you squeeze his arm softly, “I don’t feel comfortable having you drive like this. You’re exhausted.”
Jake shrugs his shoulders. “I’m used to it.” You give him a look and he sighs, “Okay, yeah, maybe I’m a little more exhausted than usual.”
“Get some rest before you head back, please. I don’t need you wrecking your car or something.”
Jake’s lips curve up into a smile, “Okay.”
You show him the guest bedroom and when you turn to look at him there’s a shimmer in his eyes. “You gonna tuck me in, sweetheart?”
“In your dreams,” you roll your eyes.
Jake lets out a sigh, “Yeah, I guess.” He gives you another smile. “I’m gonna have to leave early tomorrow morning to make it to training on time. So I’ll probably be gone by the time you get up.”
You nod your head, you figured it would be like that. “I just don’t want you to drive while you’re  overtired.”
Jake’s hand moves to the side of your face and he gives you a soft kiss on the cheek, “Thanks for looking out for me.”
You don’t know what else to say so you say, “Get some rest Lieutenant Seresin.”
Something flashes through his eyes and he grins, “Is that an order?”
“Very much so. And I’m going to become very unpleasant if you don’t follow it.” You cross your arms over your chest.
“Gosh, I— … You’re adorable.” He shakes his head. “Goodnight, sweetheart.” He leaves one more kiss on your cheek and you can only whisper a small goodnight before he’s disappeared inside the guest bedroom.
Almost in a trance you enter your own bedroom and change into your pyjamas, it’s still early but there’s not much to do, maybe you’ll read for a bit or watch some tv.
The knowledge that Jake is sleeping in your house, only a few doors down from your own bedroom, makes you nervous. Not in a bad way, but you know there’s more between you and Jake than just being parents to Josie. The air between you is practically sizzling every time you’re alone. And you care about him. You care about him so much. Would it really be so bad to give it another try? He’s changed from who he was six years ago. He’s great with Josie, he’s proven that you can count on him. He’s taken actions to change his career in a way that would allow him to be around more. And if you’re being honest with yourself, you’ve fallen for him. And every day you fall a little more.
You’re still trying to protect yourself and Josie, especially with this dangerous mission coming up. But you also know that it’s already too late for Josie, she loves Jake with all her heart and losing him would devastate her. Your eyes start burning as you picture yourself telling Josie that Jake’s not coming back. It’s one of the scariest thoughts you’ve ever had. Even scarier than the thought of allowing yourself to fall for him, to trust him again, to go all in and him breaking your heart again.
As you sit there at the edge of your bed you realise that soon Jake will be leaving on the mission. A mission that is so dangerous that even Jake isn’t sure if he’ll make it back. Maybe this will be one of the last times you see him. You don’t want to think like that but it’s not like it’s unrealistic.
You shake your head. What the hell am I doing?
You get up, kill the light in your room, return to the door of the guest bedroom and open it gently. You don’t want to wake him in case he’s already asleep.
“Sweetheart?” Jake’s raspy voice reaches your ears and you let out a sigh of relief. “Everything okay?” He sits up in bed and turns on the bedside lamp.
“Yeah I just …”, you wring your hands together. “I was wondering …” Jake looks at you curiously, his features soft in the warm light of the lamp. “Would you mind if I just sleep next to you?” You bite your lips together waiting for his reply.
“C’mere.” He moves over a little bit and lifts the blanket. You don’t even hesitate as you lie down beside him, his arm moving around your waist as he covers you with the blanket. He’s about to pull his arm away but you reach for his wrist.
“I thought you just wanted to sleep next to me.” He whispers and without looking at him you know his smirking.
“Don’t be a smartass”, you roll your eyes, “Can you just hold me?” Then you feel his arm tighten around you, pulling you closer to him. You’re surrounded by his scent and his warmth and you don’t remember the last time you felt this at peace.
You feel Jake pressing another kiss on your cheek. And as if he knows exactly what you need in that moment he says, “Careful what you wish for, sweetheart. If it was up to me I’d never let go of you.”
You lean back against his chest and sigh. “Sounds pretty good to me.”
✩̿✪̿✩̿
When Jakes shows up the next day you immediately know that it’s time.
“You’re leaving.” It’s not a question, you can tell from the solemn expression on his face.
He nods, “Tonight.” The sun has already begun to set.
“How much time do we have?” You reach for his hand and pull him inside the house before closing the door.
“Not much. I just came by to say goodbye and tuck Josie in.” Warmth spreads in your chest at his words, but the warmth is quickly followed by ice-cold worry. He’s leaving.
You can only nod and motion for him to follow you, Josie is already waiting for her bedtime story.
“Hey, peanut.” Jake smiles and Josie sits up excitedly.
“Daddy! Will you read my bedtime story today?” She holds the book out to him.
He turns to look at you questioningly and you nod. As if you’d deny him that. “Of course, Josie.” He reaches for the book and sits down at the edge of her bed.
You watch as he reads the story to her, with different voices and everything and you feel a lump form in your throat. He’s a good dad. You just hope he’ll be able to read many more stories to Josie.
Jake softly closes the book once he’s finished, his fingers running over the cover absentmindedly.
“Daddy’s gonna be gone for a little while.” He finally says. “I have to leave because of work.”
Josie’s eyes widen, “You need to safe the world?”
Jake chuckles, “Something like that.” He runs his finger over her nose making her giggle.
“But you’ll be back soon?” Josie’s voice is hopeful, and you so desperately want to hear Jake say that of course he’ll be back, why wouldn’t he? But you know that he can’t promise that.
“I’ll do everything in my power to get back home to you as soon as possible.” Jake says and smiles. “Can I have a hug goodbye?” Jake hasn’t even finished his sentence when Josie’s arms wrap around his neck. Both of them hold on to each other tightly and you have to look away so you don’t start crying.
“Be good, okay?” Jake whispers and kisses Josie’s head, “I love you.”
“I love you, too, Daddy,” Josie murmurs into his neck. It’s both heartbreaking and so absolutely beautiful to see them like this.
After a long while, they finally let go of each other and Jake tucks Josie in.
“Sweet dreams, peanut.” He kisses her forehead and she closes her eyes with a smile.
“Sweet dreams, Daddy.”
Jake rubs his hand over his sternum as he stands up and then his eyes find yours. They’re brimming with tears and you doubt yours look much better.
You reach for his hand and lead him into the hallway.
“You can’t stay a little longer?” You ask and thread your fingers through his, enjoying the feeling of his skin against yours.
He shakes his head, regret evident on his face. “I have to be on base in an hour.”
“Okay.” You walk back to the front door in silence. You don’t want him to leave but you don’t have a choice, it’s time to say goodbye. At least for now.
“Oh, I almost forgot!” You say and reach into the little bowl by the front door. “I had a key made for you. So if you ever want to come by and we’re not home you don’t have to wait on the porch.” Or if you come home from your mission in the middle of the night, you think but don’t say it.
“Thank you.” Jake smiles softly as he takes the key and adds it to his keychain. It makes you weirdly happy to watch him do it.
“Be careful out there okay?” You say as Jake steps onto your front porch.
“I always am.” He smiles softly and squeezes your hand.
You look at him doubtfully. “Your callsign is Hangman.”
“Don’t worry about me, okay?” His free hand moves to cup the side of your face. “I’ve got a lot to lose. I’ll be careful.”
You nod your head mechanically. “Okay.”
Jake rests his forehead against yours, his breath fanning over your lips. “I’m gonna kiss you now.” He whispers and shiver runs down your spine.
“Please.” You tilt your head and then his lips are on yours and your insides are fluttering. You step closer towards him, as close as possible, your whole body pressing against him. Your arms wrap around his neck while he pulls you closer with his arm around your waist.
The kiss is urgent and gentle at the same time and when his tongue touches yours you let out a soft moan. You don’t know how long you kiss like that but you never want it to end.
Eventually, though, Jake pulls back just enough that he can look into your eyes.
“Sweetheart, I l—“
You pull him into another kiss to shush him and shake your head. “You can tell me when you get back, okay?”
You’ve never seen Jake this vulnerable. And you know he wants to tell you that he loves you. And you want to tell him the same thing. But you want to hear him say it once he’s back. So the adrenaline rush of hearing him say those three little words isn’t overshadowed by the massive worry for him.
“You tell me when you get back, understand?” Your voice is thick with tears.
“Okay.” He nods and presses another kiss on your lips. “I’ll tell you when I get back.”
You pull him into another deep kiss and you keep kissing him until your lips are swollen and Jake absolutely has to go.
“I’ll see you again soon, sweetheart.”
Jake's Love Language 💚
Warnings: Mentions Of Love-Making, Jake Being Jake, Time Jump, Little Bit Of Angst, Hint Of Pregnancy, And Lot Of Fluff.
Tumblr media
While you are lying in the bed while sleeping in naked, Jake can't help but look that you sleeping so peaceful. However, he kisses your temple, and you wake up from your sleep....
"Hey cowboy, what up?" You rubbing your eyes.
"Nothing, just looking at your beautiful face and just to think that I'm can't believe that I'm one lucky son of a bitch." He smiles towards you.
"And, why is that, Mr. Seresin?" You ask him
"Because I'm glad that I'm met you. The first time you step in The Hard Deck is when I'm first laying my eyes on you. Plus, at first, you were suspicious of me because you thought I was gonna kidnap or murder you." He chuckled
"Well, that was my first instant in my mind. It's just that I'm don't want nothing bad to happen to me, you know?"
"I'm understand where you are coming from. But you know that not who I am, and if I'm were serial killer, I wouldn't be the man that my mama raised me that I am today." He smirks while he cuddles you.
"I'm know, I love you Jakey."
"I'm love you too, darlin." He said it in a southern drawl accent that you fell in love with when y'all first met each other.
Y'all start to make out once again, he giving you love bites on your jaw to your neck, while you moaning to his name....
"Jake, I'm need you, and I want you." You cooed
"You have me, babe, always and forever because you are my wife, and I gonna take care of you, so let me do my husband's duties." He said to you with full of love.
When he touches you, it's like ice melt in your body, the way he kisses you, you get a taste of strawberries like on a summer day. And when y'all make love, ever since y'all gotten married, that feeling still electric when you feel like you the only girl in the world.
Tumblr media
Over the next two years, y'all two found a home to start your little family, plus it makes sense so Jake can be closer to his job. So one day while you scrolling through to see what kind of couch for the living room, you felt little sick in your stomach, so you went straight to the bathroom and you throw up, so afterwards you thinking in your mind that you might be pregnant. So you call your husband for a favor...
"Hey darlin, what up?" He answered
"Hey J, I'm need a favor." Your voice is a little nervous
"Okay, is something wrong, sweets?" He asks in a concerned voice.
"Yeah, while you are on the way home, can you go to the store and get me three pregnancy tests for me, please?"
"Sure baby, I'm gotcha ya, I go get it now alright?"
"Alright, thank you, Jakey."
"No problem, darlin', I'm be coming home soon, see you when I get there."
"Okay, love you, J," you said to him
"Love you too, sweets." He hang up the phone.
Tumblr media
So after he came home from the store, Jake walked in the house, greeted, and hugged you tight because he knew everything is gonna be okay, no what matters life throws at them. And so you feel little nervous to take both of the tests but Jake is right by your side every little step in the way, so you went to the bathroom and took all the three tests and put a timer on and wait after it's rings.
"Hey, you know everything is gonna be fine, you know that right?" He comfort you.
"I'm know J, but what if I'm not ready to be a mom?, what if I-I'm not fit for it?, I really scare Jakey." You feel nervousness in your voice.
"Hey, hey, hey, baby, I'm told you when we got married, you know I always gonna take care of you till in sickness in health, for better and for worse. And be there for you regardless if I at work or home, you my number one priority and I'm love you sweets." He holds your hands while he comforts you with full of love.
"I love you too Cowboy."
*Dings*, the timer rings so y'all about to found out if you pregnant or not......
"Okay, you ready? On three: 1, 2, 3", y'all flipped both of the tests, and it's all came back to positive, meaning y'all is expecting your first child together.
"We gonna be parents, baby!!" You excited but nervous at the same time.
"We are baby, we are!, I'm looking forward to it be a daddy. He smiles and gives you a kiss on your temple.
Nine months later, you have been giving birth to a baby girl, and you name her Jade Alexis Seresin. She got beautiful green eyes and her nose just like her daddy. You and Jake were over the moon that y'all became parents, and you named Bob Floyd & Natasha Trace as the godparents for your daughter. 💚
Tumblr media
A/N: It's just a little burb story that I'm made, but it's a sequel but part 2 to Texan & Georgian storyline that I did, and sorry , I took my time with it, but I did the best that I could. I hope y'all like it.
An alarming cry jolted Jake from his sleep, waking him from the peaceful dream state that always consumed him whenever he had you in his arms. Listening out the silences of the house was calming, though as another cry is heard Jake knows that it’s Mathew.
You slowly stir awake, going to get up, though before you can Jake pulls you by the waist back to the bed.
“I’ve got him darlin’” He places a kiss on your head, and you can’t help the sleep-filled smile that settles across your lips. “You need your sleep.”
You go to protest, knowing that he needs his sleep just as much, if not more, than you do. But he is already up, pulling his sweats and t-shirt on. Sleep overtakes you again, as the silent form of Jake heads out the Mathews bedroom. Your heart fills with love, this past year with Jake had been a dream and you couldn’t imagine a better father-figure for Maty.
Jake hears Mathew’s quiet whimpers as he nears the child’s room, the darkness of the night incases the house as Jake passes the kitchen and a bright 2:13 am blinks in red.
He wipes the sleep from his eyes, yawning as his body is still wrecked from the pass week. He’s thankful that it’s a Friday night, the past five days the Dagger Squadron had been running drills with a new set of recruits. Each of the team member switching off teaching positions, depending on the days needed skill set.
Mathew’s door is slightly ajar and the light from his moon lamp, seeps into the hallway. Pushing the door open slowly, as to not scare the child, Jake sees Mathew sat up clutching on to the blanket that Jake had gotten him before going on a mission last month.
The light blue material, littered with planes, had easily become Mathews favorite comfort item. Jake couldn’t have been happier when he saw how much Mathew loved it, always having it during their nightly calls. It didn’t matter that Jake was on carrier in the middle of the ocean, every night they called and read a bedtime story. Though two weeks didn’t seem all that long, it had been a rough two weeks for all three of you.
Jake had officially moved in, and Maty was used to his presence every day, and those 14 days were hell. Maty was constantly worrying about Jake and was afraid that he wouldn’t come home.
In the last two weeks that Jake had been home, Mathew was attached to his hip. Wanting Jake to do everything with him, school drop-offs (which worked perfectly, as Maty was now going to school on base), nightly homework, and you even lost the privilege of bedtime stories.
Jake couldn’t have been happier that Mathew wanted to spend so much time with him and grew to love their newly formed routine.
Slowly walking over to the side of Mathew's bed, Jake softly sat down not wanting to startle him. Jake realized that Mathew's eyes were still closed, and he was in fact still dreaming. Jake slowly reached out for the boy, moving to bring Mathew’s shuttering form to his lap.
Rocking Mathew ever so gently, Jake slowly pushed back the hair on his head. Quietly muttering sweet nothings, hoping to calm the child, or slowly ease him from his dream state.
Mathew slowly started to wake up, his body going ridge, until he realized that it was Jake holding him. Rubbing at his eyes Mathew slowly looked up and found a smiling Jake staring back at him.
“Hey buddy, you okay?” Jake quietly questioned, still afraid of startling him.
His little head nodded, giving Jake a silent answer. Which only meant one of two things; Mathew was still half-asleep, or he’d been having a horrible nightmare. Jake had a gut instinct that it was the latter.
“Do you want to talk about it?”
Another silent nod without a reply, Jake new that Mathew would open up in his own time. Moving the five-year-old off his lap, caused a silent whimper and tiny hands to clutch onto Jake’s shirt.
“I’m not going anywhere bud. Let’s just lay down, I won’t leave you bubba.”
Mathew’s body instantly relaxed and moved over as much as possible to make room for Jake to fit into his small bed.
Once they were both comfortable, with Jake laying down and Mathew laying on top of his chest listening to his heartbeat, Jake slowly started to fall back asleep.
Though he was quickly awoken by Mathews small voice.
“You didn’t come home.”
Confusion painted Jakes face, unsure of what Mathew was referring to. Lazily stroking the child’s head, Jake urged him to continue.
“In my dream, you didn’t come home.”
Jake patiently waited for Mathew to continue, still not understanding fully.
“You never got off the big ship. You died and me and momma were all alone again.” Though his sniffles and whimpers had subsided, Jake didn’t miss the one that came from the small body as he talked.
It broke Jakes heart to hear that he was the reason that Mathew was crying, he hated that his little 5 year old boy could have such fears. That the thought of losing Jake, had caused him so much pain and that there was an actual chance that one day Jake wouldn’t come home.
He couldn’t tell Mathew that, he would do everything in his power to come home. To be here with you two, even if that one day meant retiring from flying.
“Buddy, I will always come home to you. That’s something that you don’t ever have to worry about.” The little hands clutching Jakes shirt released slightly, though Jake could still tell that Mathew wasn’t full relaxed.
“I’m never going to leave you and your momma, Mathew. I promise.” Jake held up his pinky finger for Mathew, to which the little boy wrapped his own pinky around.
The duo had started doing pinky promises, a promise that could never be broken, or so Jake had told Mathew. It became their silent code and comfort language when Mathew got worried or stressed.
With their pinkies wrap around each other, Mathew brought their hands together to tuck under his head, resting peacefully against Jakes chest.
As Jake started to drift off to sleep, cradling Mathew, he heard the boy let out a last whisper, before falling asleep.
“We’re never gonna leave you either daddy.”
Jake's heart stopped for a moment, like a bucket of water to the face, he realized that maybe it was time to hang up his wings.
I Find Myself Running Home To Your Sweet Nothings
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
pairing [s] : jake seresin x reader
warning [s] : nothing much
a/n [s] : requests are open
Tumblr media
Jake was a man of many deserving titles.
He was a Captain in the United States Navy, and he held his own Top Gun classes to teach graduates. He was highly respected and was understood to be hard as well not understanding if you had messed up and would have killed your team of pilots. However, who would have known the big and scary Jake Seresin was a family man? Jacob Seresin, the same guy who yells and the room goes quiet, carrying his sleeping daughter in his arms while he packs up the items he chose to bring to the park. The same guy who puts Barbie Band-Aids on his daughter’s knee whenever she jumps off a swing and scrapes her knee against the wood chippings.
Jake, your lovely husband, wakes you up with kisses and soft touches that lie on your skin for years to come. Jake Seresin who loves his sweet girls and gives kisses to his daughter’s head before she tackles school for the day to come. The Jake you fell in love with who drinks Pumpkin Spice Lattes the day they get released at Starbucks. The one who yells and screams at The Longhorns winning a football game. Jake Seresin, the man who has a heart big enough for hundreds of people that he carries with him every single day he lives. The guy who adds extra sugar and creamer to his coffee because of the bitterness of it.
You're in love; you're completely sure of it. The baby on your stomach that weighs on you is another reason why. The small boy sits on your chest, sound asleep with a hat on his small head and a one piece swimsuit. Your daughter and Jake are in the ocean, catching waves with their boogie boards as you stay back with your song, Theodore. He's small and tiny, only two months old. The heat of San Diego pushes through the canopy you have set up, making you sweat and Theo as well. You stand up and push against the beach chair and walk to the shore of the beach. The sun is high in the sky, the sunglasses you wear barely do much to stop the burning in your eyes.
The water is much cooler, but it only does so much to help the heat that radiates from Theo and the sun at the same time. Jake has a, particularly sleepy, Lily in his arms as she yawns. “Everyone is getting sleepy, huh?” You say as your children are laying against their father's toned chest as he pushes his hair back. He's hot and handsome, the water that drops done him gets you undeniably hot inside. “Lemme hold Theo.” He tells you and talks the s boy in his arms, lying him on his arm and head against his bicep. Lily and Josie start walking back to the tent and sit down, eating the snacks you had packed for them.
“He was so hot whenever he was laying on my chest. I had to get into the water.” Jake laughs and gives you a kiss against the lips. He smells and tastes like the ocean and salt water, as you almost gag at the taste. “Let’s get maybe.. 2 bags and take them to the house. We're allowed to keep the canopy and stuff on here because it's our private beach.” Jake tells you and you nod, taking Theo back in your arms as you watch Jake pick up things and put them in bags and pick them up gracefully before beginning to walk up the beach. Lily is talking with Josie about what they were going to watch on Netflix whenever they got back and you smiled happily. This is what you needed. A family. A caring family with people who have learned to live and support one another.
Jake is taking the things upstairs and you follow after him, before Theo starts to get fussy and upset about being in the heat and not his bed. Jake, a father of many years, quickly resumes his role and takes care of his son. “I love you.” You say as you watch him hold Theo in one arm and the bags in the other. “Love you too honey!” He shouts from your bedroom and you walk into him. The Jake Seresin you know and love, the one who changes diapers and gives raspberries to Theo’s stomach as he does so. It was a reprise of his Father's role for a new baby, and he was in it very well. It was the total he took more seriously than the Captain or the King of Darts at the bar. A father. A man who has children he loves and cares for them.
It was love and that is exactly what you loved. The domesticity makes you smile and stand on that edge of the doorway as you listen to whatever he has been saying. You love him: and he loves you. So much more than everyone else.
Park Outings Headcanons
Jake "Hangman" Seresin x Fem!Reader
summary: What it's like when Jake takes his son to the park
A/n: Jake as a doting father? fuckkkk
Tumblr media
Jake never saw himself as the ‘take your kid to the park’ kind of guy when he was single or even when it was just you and him. Go with his married friends and their kids for comradery? Sure. Accompany his niece and nephew? Fine. It was all fuzzy in his head when he thought about himself, but then Luke came along and that picture became clear as day.
Luke’s favorite place was the park, the five-year-old loved to run and play for hours in the small playground
He would sit at the top of the slide and watch the ocean in the far distance and beg Jake to watch him slide down to the warm sand below
He’s a well prepared dad. Jakes uses one of his old backpacks and fills it with everything. 2 first aid kits, a change of clothes, and an endless supply of snacks and juice boxes
“Daddy, I’m hungry,” Luke whined as he dramatically sat on the park bench, his little limbs splayed in all directions
Jake opened his bag and tossed a small bag of goldfish and a juice box in his lap, kissing the top of his head as he tore into it
Cuts and scraped knees? Hangman’s all over it
He’ll gently soothe his son as he cries from the burn of the antiseptic
“It burns,” he cried, his nails digging crescents into the skin around his scraped knee
“I know buddy, I know,” Jake told him as calmly as he could, “you are bein’ so strong.”
Jake wiped his tears and marveled at how quickly his son would be running back towards the monkey bars, showing off his airplane band-aid to his friends
You were also a very hot topic at the playground
Sometimes Jake would wear one of his Navy t-shirts and would have all the single moms and nannies flocking to the muscular blond
They’re weak in the knees when he tells them he’s an aviator
Then he smirks and delivers the final blow “My wife and I were top of our class at Top Gun. They call her Widow… she’s absolutely lethal.”
It was fun for him to see them scatter
Luke loved when he heard the roar of the planes from the base, “Daddy, Daddy!” he gasped, running as fast as he could, his eyes towards the clear blue sky
Jake would lift him up on his shoulders and watch him look for the planes
Luke wiggled as he saw the silhouettes of the planes pass over
He never failed to wave at them
“Do you think that’s mommy?” he asked
“I think it might, bud!”
After long days at the park, Luke always smiled when he saw your car in the driveway
He’d race from Jake’s truck and straight into your arms
“Oh my little love,” you hummed as you held him tight, nuzzling your nose into his neck “Did you have fun at the park?”
“I did! Did you see me wave? Did you?” he asked excitedly
You and Jake shared a loving glance as he got out of the truck
You hugged Luke a little tighter, kissing his cheek.“Of course, I did, baby.”
"How was the park?" you asked him after the lights went out, cuddled against him in your bed
Jake placed kisses along your shoulder blades and held you tightly
"I got to play doctor and turn down five women in one afternoon."
He could feel the satisfied grin on your face
Jake Seresin was a man who lived his life on the edge, lived life by the edge of his sleeve.
Until now, the baby staring up at him with her soft brown puppy dog eyes.
He smiled at the little girl, holding her into his chest.  He looked back at you laid soundly in the bed. He knew the amount of painkillers you were on, an almost fourteen hour labor. Sitting in his arms was the result of that labor, the one thing changing his world.
"Hi sweet Eve” he smiled as she babbled slightly, her small hand reaching out to him. “I’m never gonna let anything happen to you okay?” he whispered to her, lifting his pinky for her to hold onto. His Naval academy ring shined under the fluorescent lights as he smiled at the small pink bundle.
You smile, watching the moment from the bed. “I think she knows” you mumble as he turns around to face you. His smile grows at the sight of your own eyes staring back at him. “Hey you” he walks towards the bed and sits on the edge beside you.
“Look what you made,” he whispers, holding the little girl towards your chest. Sitting up, you take the bundle into your own arms and against your chest.
“God” you whisper more to yourself than him, he smiles. “I mean it” he whispers, looking at you. You hum in response, looking back up at him with a dazed smile. “Nothing is gonna happen to her if I have anything to say about it, either of you” he reaches out, pushing the sweat dried pieces of hair out of your face, pulling you forward to kiss your sweat dried forehead.
“You are my girls” he whispers against your skin as you smile. “I know” you look up at him with the dazzling smile he’s always loved. “Never thought Hangman and Joker would be sitting here with a baby” you smile as he chuckles, nodding.
He moves to sit beside you, letting your body fall into his side. He smiles down at the babygirl in your arms. “Jake?” you whisper, eyes focused on the baby as he hums in response. “Please don’t leave us” his heart breaks at the sound of your voice, he leans forward, kissing your hairline.
“I’m never leaving either of you” nodding, you both fall silent and listen to the babbling of your baby.
As you laid beside him, he watched the rise and fall of your chest. Maybe it wasn’t too late for him. Maybe he could be the man the two of you deserved. He could fly home to Texas and gain the courage to ask his Mom for her wedding band that she saved just for him. The band that would look perfect sitting on your left hand.
He had all he needed laid beside him, you and Evelyn.
He kissed the top of your head, letting his nose rest on the crown of your head. HIs thoughts continued in waves, interrupted by his phone.
He pulls his phone from his pocket as slowly as possible, looking down at the text in front of him.
Phoenix: Drinks tonight? ;)
His stomach plummeted at the text as he sighed. He moves you to gently lay back in the bed and climbs out. He takes one look back at you as he stands in the door, tapping his phone in his hand. It wasn’t too late for him.
“Hey you” Phoenix's voice is sultry, flirty on the other end of the phone. “This stops now” he says, looking back at the door as he stands in the hallway. She scoffs softly on the other end. “And why is that? There’s no way someone tied down the Jake Seresin'' he sighs, pushing his hair out of his face. “She did and you know that'' he says, hands on his hips. “Don’t tell me you fell in love with Joker of all people'' she seeths as he bites his tongue.
“You know how I feel about her Phoenix '' he can hear the hurt she tried so hard to hide from him. “She’s gonna backstab you Bagman” he shakes his head, knowing she couldn’t see him. “It’s my decision to make and I am making it” he hangs the phone up then, not continuing to listen to her arguments.
He closes his eyes and takes a deep breath as he continues to let the thoughts flow through his brain like waves. Jake was going to keep his promise, he was going to stay. It wasn’t too late for the two of you and the family you were building.
The two of you were home from the hospital finally. His girls under the same roof. You fall onto the couch beside him with a heavy sigh. “You okay?” he asks, looking down at your tired eyes.
You’ve only been home for two days.
Home.
Jake’s home that he helped make yours. Together. You nod, moving under his awaiting arm, “I need to ask you something”. Your voice is soft as he nods, kissing the top of your head. “Anything you want” he whispers, running a soothing hand through the strands of tangled hair. “We tell everyone we don’t know who her father is okay?” you ask, looking up at him through your lashes.
Jake’s heart stops.  The two of you knew exactly who her father was and chose to keep it between the two of you. “If anyone asks, we don’t know, '' he nods, watching your face closely. “I-I love her and I don’t want anything to happen to her, the world does not need to know she belongs to Chicken'' he chuckles softly at the nickname you've picked up for the man in question.
“What if I say she’s mine?” he whispers, making your heart stop. “I’ve been here the whole time, I mean we can certainly make it work” he cups your cheeks. “Are you sure you would want that? This?” you ask sitting up. You knew Jake and his reputation.
“Jake, you don’t do long-term” you whisper, his heart clenching one word at a time. “I don’t but I want long term with you. It's not too late for us Jokes'' you nod slowly.
“I want you and Evelyn beside me in this life, you two are the best parts of me” he admits. “Okay” you whisper, smiling. “You are her father, it’s the three of us” he nods, pulling you in to connect his lips to your own, kissing you as if the world was crumbling.
“I promised, remember?” you nod with a chuckle, “you did”.
Jake was fully intent on keeping that promise.
present day.
The waves crashed against the sand as your breaths followed the crash. Taking a deep breath as one made its way in, exhaling at the crash. “It’s gonna be okay” Jake whispers beside you, kissing your temple. “I promised him and I can’t take that back” you mumble, looking over at Jake. He nods, looking at you with a smile. “She’s our little girl okay?” nodding, you sigh.
The sound of gravel pulls you from the bubble you tried to hide in, looking back at the blue Bronco. “I’ll go” he mumbles, moving from your side.
With a shake of your head, you reach out taking his hand to stop him. “Please don’t, if this goes south, I want you here for her” he nods slowly, lacing your fingers together.
“Hi guys” Rooster makes himself known then, looking at the two of you with a shy smile. You smile, looking back at him behind your own aviators. “Hi Chicken” he sighs, Jake stands with a proud smile.
“Evelyn! C’mere sweetheart” you yell to the toddler, she sat making a sand castle a few feet ahead. “Comin Momma” she yells back, standing and running towards the three of you. You and Bradley crouch down to meet her at eye-level.
“I have someone I want you to meet” she wraps an arm around your neck as she buries her head in your shoulder at the sight of Rooster. Pulling her into your chest, you hold her closer, sending rooster a sheepish smile.
He nods, watching the scene unfold. “Evelyn” you whisper as she pulls her head from your shoulder, looking at the man who made her, she didn’t know it yet.
“This is Bradley,” he smiles, waving at her gently. “He’s your dad sweetheart” you whisper, rubbing her sides soothingly. She looks back at you, then back at Bradley and lastly, she looks up at Jake. He stands beside the three of you.
The four year old was smart she looked between the three of you then between Jake and Bradley. “Then he’s not my dad” she points to Jake as he crouches down to be eye level. “Of course I am sweetheart, you have two” he smiles at her, as she nods slowly. “Bradley and I are both your dad okay?” she nods, looking at the other man beside her.
Bradley smiles at her, waving again. She walks over to him, looking him over. “I’m Evelyn” she mumbles, looking up at him through her lashes.
He smiles, “hi Evelyn, I’m Bradley” he whispers, “but you can call me Rooster” she thinks, nodding slowly. “Chicken!” He closes his eyes behind his aviators as Jake tries to hide his laugh.
“Rooster, do you wanna go make a sand castle?” she asks, looking at him as he nods slowly, standing to take her awaiting hand. “Thank you” he mouths to you and Jake as he follows her down the beach to her station of building a sand castle.
You watch as he sits down beside her, helping her build the sand castle she was building moments before. “Do you fly planes like my dad?” she asks as they pile sand into the bucket. “I do,” he nods, looking over at her. She nods, looking at him. “Why do they call you chicken?” she asks, he chuckles at her bluntness.
“Your mom and dad gave me that nickname a little while ago” she nods slowly, watching his face. He takes the aviators off his eyes, hooking them to the white tank top he wore under the Hawaiian shirt.
She looks him over, taking in the features that were so close to her own then looks away. “There's a picture of you in our house” she mumbles, continuing to dump sand into little blue bucket. “Oh?” he asks, as she nods, “you, my mom and dad”. He knows what photo hung there it was from after the Uranium mission, the three of you.
“I think it’s going well” Jake mumbles, wrapping an arm around your shoulders, you sigh. “I hope it is, looks like she is giving him the third degree” you can see the discomfort on Bradley's face as they continue to talk. “Eh, gets it from her momma” he says as you slap his chest, “ow” he chuckles.
Evelyn moves to sit between Bradleys legs as he laughs, helping her dump the bucket. “Okay, now what do you want to use to decorate?” he asks her as she taps her chin in concentration. “Shells!” she yells, standing as he stands after her. He takes her awaiting hand and walks to the edge of the sand. “I hope she still loves me” Jake mumbles, whipping your head around, looking at him with furrowed brows.
“She’s gonna still love you as much as she has before, I promise you” he nods, kissing your temple. He hoped that you were right and that she would still look at him as he held the world and stars.
Rooster made his way beside the two of you, sitting down on the sand to the left of you. “She is just like you” he mumbles, looking over at you. Chuckling, Jake nods,  “yes she is''.
You shake your head, looking between the two of them, “she gets a lot of qualities from you as well Rooster. Don’t give me all the credit” he nods slowly, looking at you with a smile. “I have to give you most of the credit, you’ve raised her to be the wonderful girl she is” you smile, bumping his shoulder gently. “You too Hangman” He mumbles, looking back out at the young girl who ran through the waves, looking back at the three of you with a bright smile.
Her smile is almost as wide as the sun. “Daddy!” Evelyn squeals from the shoreline, Jake kisses the top of your head, standing from the sand. “Where are you goin?” you ask, he smiles as he nods toward the four year old, “i’ve been summoned” he laughs at the shake of your head. “I’m comin Eve!” he puts the aviators back over his eyes as he jogs down to the shoreline. “It’s weird, seeing such a different side of him” Bradley says as you smile.
“This is Jake Seresin'' turning your gaze from the sight in front of you over to Bradley, “this is not Hangman” he nods as you continue.
“He may be a cocky aviator in the skies and that's fine, his ego is huge but here” your smile grows as Jake holds evelyn on his shoulders, “He’s just dad”.
The sun setting pulls the three of you back to the parking lot, Bradley crouches down to Evelyn’s level. “Bye Roo” she whispers, wrapping her small arms around his neck as she yawns. “Bye Eve” he whispers back, rubbing her back. “Make sure you are good okay?” he asks as she shrugs, looking up at him. “I make no promise” she grins at the growing smile on his lips. “I’ll see you later okay?” he asks as she nods, looking between you and Jake.
“Of course” Jake nods, picking her up to set her on his hip, she nuzzles her nose into his neck. “See you tomorrow Rooster” he nods in goodbye and makes his way past him and to the truck a few feet away. “Thank you,” Rooster says, looking at you with a smile. You smile up at him nodding, “I think she enjoyed your company” he nods with a chuckle. “It’s nice to see you again, it's like Top Gun all over again” he winks, nudging you gently.
“In the best parts of Top Gun” you defend, following him to his Bronco. He nods, pulling you into a hug with a chuckle, “I know and listen, motherhood fits you so well” he whispers, giving you an extra squeeze. “Bye Bradley, see you tomorrow” he nods, watching as you walk back to Jake and Evelyn.
The alarm beside the two of you rang, blared into the emptiness of the bedroom. Reaching over, you slam a hand down to shut off the screeching.
In seconds another much more muscular arm does the same beside you. Rolling over, you nuzzle into his back, arms wrapping around his waist.
Jake’s hand reaches down, taking hold of the hand you had on his boxers. “One of us has to take Eve to school” he grumbles, voice full of sleep. “When do you have to be on base?” you ask, kissing his shoulder blade. “0600” he mumbles, looking at the red numbers on the bedside table beside him.
“I’ll take her” you mumble as you roll away from his body, sitting up. He reaches out running his fingers along your back soothingly. The cold of his hands on your back makes you shiver. “Sorry” he chuckles, his eyes still full of sleep.
“I’ll pick her up” he mumbles as you nod. “Okay handsome” you lean back, kissing his chest as you stand. Stripping the shirt and panties you wore to bed, his snores were soft but you knew he had fallen back to sleep.
You toss the shirt at him with a smirk as he jumps, sitting up. “I’m up” he sighs. Jake Seresin never thought this would be his life, the love of his life waking up beside him and the daughter you two shared slept down the hall. “Love you” your soft whisper doesn't register with him at first.
It makes him smile in his daze, “love you more” he mumbles back.
The door is peaking open as the bathroom door closes. “Daddy?” her voice is hoarse as it comes out in almost a whimper. “Hey baby girl” he’s sitting up immediately at the sound of her voice, he notices it then. She’s holding the stuffed shark that  Bob got her for her birthday tight to her chest as she sniffles.
He invites her onto the bed as she climbs beside him, holding onto his arms as she goes. “C’mere” he pulls her into his chest, cradling her head as he did the day she was born. “What’s goin on?” he asks, looking down at her. She sniffles into his chest, nuzzling deeper to hide her face from him. “Honey” he whispers, running his fingers through her hair, he can feel the small tears falling onto his pec.
“I-I had a bad dream..” she finally whispers, voice cracking softly. “Do you want to talk about it?” he asks as she shakes her head, moving deeper into his arms. He smiled slightly, pulling her closer to his chest. “Eve?” he whispers, looking down at her. She nods in response as he kisses the top of her head, “no matter what, I won’t let anything ever happen to you okay?” he whispers as she nods slowly.
“You are my girl you know?” she looks up at him with tear stained cheeks. “More than momma?” she asks as he grins, holding a finger to his lips, “just don't tell her” she smiles.
He climbes out of bed and holds a hand out to help her down, “let’s get you ready for school okay?” he asks as she nods, walking towards the door. “I love you daddy” she stops at the door, looking at him. He feels his heart clench as he smiles, “I love you too sweet girl” Jake says, following her down the hallway to her room.
“Good Morning” you smirk, pulling the glasses off your face, looking around the room of Aviators. “I have some good news” setting the sunglasses down on the podium, you move to stand in front of it.
The group sat with bated breath, watching your every move. “As you all know, the naval ball is approaching and I got word from Admiral Simpson, the dagger squad is all to be honored” you grin at the smiles breaking out on their faces. “Now, of course that's a big deal but I have more news on top of that”  the group moved to the edge of their seats, watching your every move.
“You are all staying here in North Island, the dagger squad will remain a strike-team for the Navy '' the room breaks out in cheers as Jake looks at you with a bright smile, smiling back at him, you wink.
“You are all going to continue on with dog-fight maneuvers today, show some of these recruits how it's done” you smile, “dismissed”. The group all files out slowly, Jake is the last remaining in the room as he makes his way to you. “I get to stay?” he whispers, looking down at you with wide eyes.
Reaching out for his hand, you nod. “You do,” you whisper as his smile grows. “We can be a family” he whispers more to himself in pure disbelief. Reaching forward, you pull him into your arms. “We are a family, we can just be together now” he nods, nuzzling his nose into your neck to hide the tears in his waterline. “I am so proud of you” you whisper, running your fingers through the hairs on the nape of his neck.
“I asked if I could be the one to present you with your accommodation” he grins against your skin, “so of course I am”. He stands to his full height, looking down at you with a smile. He reaches out, cupping your cheeks with a wider grin.
“God, I love you” he whispers as you grin, kissing his palm, “i love you more cowboy, now go” you nod towards the door.
“I need you to go show these recruits how it's done” he nods, saluting as he walks out the door.
Standing at the mirror, Jake attempts to tie his tie for the fifteenth time. He was more nervous for this pinning than when he got his academy ring. “You need help, sailor?” you ask from the doorway as he looks over with a smile.
There you stood in the dress he helped you pick out a few weeks ago, still hugging you in all the perfect places. He nods, turning to face you as you tie the tie slowly.
He smiles, looking over the small details of your makeup and jewelry. The small “J” pendant looked perfect sitting on your neckline. “There” you whisper, patting his chest with a smile, looking up at him. He kisses your forehead gently, wrapping his arms around your waist. “I’m nervous,” he admits as you chuckle softly, looking up at him. “You deserve this, all of you do” he nods, letting out a heavy sigh.
“Woah!” Evelyn says from the doorway, looking between the two of you. Smiling, you look down at your daughter who is grinning as she makes her way to the two of you.
“Momma, you look so pretty! You look nice too, daddy!" she looks up at the two of you with a smile. Jake reaches down, picking her up to place her on his hip as she grins, looking at the three of you in the mirror.
Jake’s heart stops for a split second, his family staring back at him.
“Give me a kiss so momma can take you to Aunt Pens” he grins as the girl kisses his forehead, he leans up to place a kiss on hers. “Be good, okay?” he asks as she nods, hugging his neck. “You be good. Be nice to Rooster” she mumbles as he laughs, nodding, “of course, for you I will."
The rain poured in North Island, something you were not completely used to. Evelyn sat quietly in the back seat as the world was lit with multiple colors of storefront signs and red lights. “Momma, I dropped my toy” Evelyn mumbles as you come to a stop, reaching back and grabbing the toy from the floor of the truck, holding it out to her to take. Jake told you to take the truck after you dropped him off with Coyote for them to carpool.
The world stopped as the light turned green. You had no time to stop as the truck came barreling towards the two of you. “Evelyn!” you yell as you attempt to reach back into the back seat as the oncoming truck came and hit the driver side of the truck.
Within seconds, the world was dark.
Jake stood beside Coyote, looking between everyone and their spouses, sipping the beer in hand. He looked down at the watch on his wrist. He knew it didn’t take long to get to Penny’s from the venu.
“Where's Joker?” Bradley asks as he looks over at him, shrugging. “I have no idea, maybe she got distracted with Penny” Bradley nods slowly, looking out the window at the pouring rain. The sirens could be heard for miles, Jake and Bradley thinking nothing of it.
Reds and Blues filled your vision, looking around the truck as the world was upside down and spinning. “Ma’am can you hear me?” the paramedic’s hands were cold on your skin as you groaned. “I have a pulse!” he yells as you gently move his hand away. “No, No please help me daughter okay?” he stops, looking at you.
“Ma’am you need medical attention” shaking your head, you look up at him with pleading eyes.
“I don’t care about me! I need you to help her” you yell. The movement is shifted from you to the back of the GMC.
“Momma!” Evelyn whimpers as the paramedics help her out of the top of the truck. Closing your eyes, you sigh. “It’s okay baby! Go with them, they are gonna help you” she sobs as the additional paramedics take her to the awaiting ambulance.
“Ma’am, I’m gonna be honest-” the fireman stops at the look on your face. “Just tell me” you say, looking up at him he tried his hardest to hide the sadness on his face. “It’s gonna take us some time to get you out of here” he says as you nod.
“Can I just make a phone call?” you ask. He nods as you ramble off the phone number, a number you knew by heart. Bradley notices the vibrating first, nudging Jake’s shoulder. “Phone” he whispers as Jake nods, pulling the phone out of his pocket. He furrows his brows, he was not one to accept unknown calls but something in him told him to answer it.
“Hello?” he answers, the room full of noise but he doesn't miss the sound of an ambulance as hears you sob. “Baby listen to me” he sits up as the seat scratches along the floor. “Baby, what is it? What's going on?” he stands, the group of Aviators watching him.
“I need you and Bradley to meet Evelyn at the hospital” you say,taking a deep breath. “(Y/N) answer me what is going on?” He slaps Bradley's arm, motioning him to follow him.
The two men apologize to the group, walking out. “Just meet her there for me okay? I need you to take care of our girl” he stops at the door, taking a deep breath. “Baby, I need to know what's going on” he levels out his voice, hiding his nervousness. “There was an accident, I-I’m sorry about the truck, I don’t know what happened but what matters is that you and Bradley are with Evelyn right now” your voice cracks as the firefighter beside you nods slowly.
“I love you Jakob Seresin don’t you ever fucking forget that, you are the best part of me” your voice is soft as another voice comes on the line seconds later.
“Evelyn, the young girl will be transported to General, she should be there in about  fifteen minutes” the line goes dead before Jake can reply.
The two men run into the Emergency Department like wild horses, pushing past nurses and people. “My name is Jake Seresin, I’m looking for my daughter Evelyn (Y/L-” a small voice down the hall stops him.
“Daddy! Rooster!”
Jake looks at the young girl as she runs towards the two of them as Rooster catches her first, holding her into his chest. She had a small bandage on her forehead, otherwise she seemed okay.
“She’s just got a few scrapes and she will be okay” the nurse nods, looking at him with a reassuring smile. “Do you know if her mother is here yet?” Jake asks. “I need an OR stat!” a doctor yells, running down the hall to meet the paramedics rolling in the gurney.
Jake turns his attention back to Evelyn for a brief moment until the gurney is rolling past him and the small ‘J’ pendant is shining brightly under the fluorescent lighting.
“Baby, stay with Rooster '' he whispers, kissing her head as he runs after the doctors. “(Y/N)!” pushing past the oncoming doctors and nurses, he manages to take your hand, noticing the blood that ran down onto his own palms.
“Baby listen to me” he’s whispering, holding your hand to his chest. “I love you, I love you so much and-” he lets the tears roll down his cheeks. “I need you to pull through this, for Eve, she-she needs you, I need you Jokes” he kisses your knuckles as the nurse gently moves him from the gurney.
“Sir, I need you to please step aside” she nods in understanding as he sobs looking at her with a nod.
The hospital fell silent in the hours of the morning. Jake sent Evelyn home with Rooster much to her protests of wanting to stay with him. The presence beside him pulls him from the blank stare at the now empty vending machine.
“How is she?” He looks over, noticing Phoenix sitting beside him. “I don’t know” his voice is hoarse, the first time he’s spoken in almost two hours. She nods, reaching out to give his arm a comforting squeeze. “I’m sorry” he furrows his brows, looking at her. “Why are you sorry?” he asks as she sighs. “Joker and I may have had our difference as you and I but she doesn't deserve this and neither do you” he nods slowly, running a hand over his face.
His head falls to her shoulder in a heavy sigh, “I couldn’t protect them”. She furrows her brows, looking at the top of his head as she sits back in the linoleum chair. “Evelyn is okay” she starts, noticing the shaking of his shoulders and the small wet droplets she felt on her bare shoulder.
“(Y/N) may not be” he whimpers, closing his eyes tightly. “She will be Jake” she reassures him, running a soothing hand along his back in comfort.
“Jake” Bradley’s voice is soft as he shakes his shoulder, Jake sitting up quickly. “What, what is it?” he asks, looking up at the man in front of him. He fell asleep on Phoenix's shoulder and before he knew it the sun was shining through the hospital windows.
“They’ve got an update on her, c’mon” he motions to the doctor standing behind him, walking towards her. Jake rushes beside Bradley, standing straighter. He looked disheveled, the suit still adorned his body from the night before.
“Good Morning” the doctor smiles at the two of them, “I am Dr.Cameron” she motions for the two men to follow her. Both men on either side of her follow down the hallway of fluorescent lights. “I have been taking care of (y/n) since her arrival, I performed her surgery also” she turns to the two of them, stopping at the door.
“So, is she gonna be okay?” Bradley asks, watching as Jake makes his way to the small window that shows the inside of  the room. He can barley makes out your silhouette.
He turns to face her, his eyes full of hope. “She’s expected to make a full recovery, she has suffered some sustainable injuries but she will be okay” she smiles at the smile breaking out on Jake’s face, nodding towards the door. “You can go in” she encourages as she shakes Bradley’s hand and walks away.
Jake pushes the door open quickly, you turn slowly at the opening of the door, smiling. “(Y/N)” he sighs, rushing beside you. “Jake” you reach a hand out to him, his hand sliding into your awaiting one. He sits beside you on the bed, resting a hand on your knee. “You scared the shit out of me” he pants, looking you over. Scrapes across your face, bandages over the ones that looked too deep.
“I’m sorry, I-I’m sorry about the truck” he shakes his head, “I do not give a fuck about that truck, it protected you and Eve”. Reaching out, he runs his thumb over the bandage on your eyebrow. Bradley makes his way into the room, smiling sheepishly.
“Rooster” he smiles from the entryway, waving slightly. “Came to check on you, I’m gonna go back to Eve but I had to see for myself” he says, watching the smile on your face.
“Take care of her for me?” you ask, voice soft. He nods, “of course” he smiles at the two of you, turning to the door and shutting it behind him. “Hey” Jake pulls your focus back to him, looking up at him. He reaches out, cupping your cheek, "I thought I lost you tonight” his voice is soft as tears make their way to his lash line. "I may have never gotten to tell you all the things I've been meaning to" he smiles sadly, “You walked into my life all those years ago and changed my life, I have walked through this world living on the edge” the two of you chuckled slightly.
“But then four years ago, we sat in a hospital room very similar to this one and my world changed forever. It was at that moment I knew I wanted to better myself for the two of you” smiling, you kiss his palm. He smiles, stroking your cheek with the pad of his thumb, “the two of you are the best parts of me, you changed my life and made me a better man, the man I want to be for you and Evelyn” he smiles, catching the tear falling onto your cheeks.
“So no, (Y/N), you are the best part of me” looking over his face, it was full of seriousness as you leaned up to pull him closer. “Get over here” you grin, pulling his lips to your own. Jake Seresin lived his life vicariously, he lived his life as he knew his two girls needed him.
He pulls away from your lips, nudging your nose gently. “I love you” he whispers a grin breaking out on his face. You smile, looking up at him through your lashes, “I love you more than words could ever describe”.
The two of you fit like puzzle pieces, filling each missing part of the other.
The school yard was full of kids, Evelyn laughs from her spot on the playground. School was on its way out, she was waiting to be picked up. She looks up at the sky as two planes fly overhead, she knew exactly was flying those planes.
“There’s my mommy and daddy!” she points. True to her word, Jake grins from the plane beside you, “Think she saw it?” he asks. You turn to look at him with a grin, “I know she did” he chuckles with a shake of his head.
“Evelyn!” she looks back, smiling. Rooster stood beside the Bronco, hands on his hips. “Dad!” she runs down the playground steps, “wait, I thought your dad just flew a plane?” a kid asks. She looks back at the kid, smiling. “I have two dads,” she laughs, running to Rooster. He scoops her up into his arms, “there’s my girl” he grins.
“Let’s get you to base huh?” he asks, putting the aviators on her face. He straps her into the car seat into the Bronco, grinning as he climbs into the driver seat.
“Can we listen to grandpa's song?” she asks, he nods from the front seat with a grin. “Of course we can!” he turns the radio up, “Great balls of Fire” plays through the speakers.
The two of them sang loudly down the road towards the base.
Cyclone smiles from his office at the sound of Evelyn's giggles down the hall. “Hi Uncle Cy!” she says in the doorway, waving as Bradley sends him an apologetic smile. He smiles, waving to the little girl. “Hi sweetheart” she waves and runs off back towards the hall.
She knew exactly where to go, running these halls for almost two years. Pushing out the door, she makes it just as you and Jake land on the tarmac.
The canopy opens and the two of you climb out, Jake makes his way to you and wraps his arms around your waist. “You still got it, Jokes” rolling your eyes, you wrap your arms around his neck, “shut up”.
Jake grins over your shoulder, causing you to follow his sight. Bradley held Evelyn's hand as they walk along the rows of planes, “so that’s aunt phoenix’s plane” he points out the planes as he goes.
“And there is Mommy's plane” he smirks as you pull the helmet off your head. “Momma!” she runs over as you crouch down with open arms. “Hi sweetheart” you grin, hugging her tightly. “Thanks Bradshaw, leave me out” Jake says, shaking his head as he ruffles the little girl's hair. She shakes her head, standing back to move to look up at Jake. “Daddy, that’s mean be nice to dad” he chuckles, picking her up onto his shoulders.
“Got it” he nods, handing her his helmet. She plops it on her head as they walk inside. Standing to your feet, you smile.
This was your family, the three of them. The best parts of you lived on in the little girl on Jake’s shoulders, as well as in Jake. Bradley who was someone you least expected to be part of your family.
“C’mon Admiral Seresin, we got stuff to do” Jake yells as you chuckle, jogging to catch up with them.
"We got a little girl who needs to get an Ice cream sundae from the cafeteria” he says as she giggles, holding onto his head.
“I second that,” Bradley grins, following the two of them.
Oh, Baby Masterlist / Masterlist
His Girls (Following Part)
-----
Staring is rude; that’s what his mama told him. That, and a handful of other little rules that didn’t fit the bill of ‘gentleman.' But he couldn’t recall a single one of them now. His mind was occupied and nothing else mattered. Maybe nothing else ever would. So he let himself stare.
You smiled and the air got trapped in his lungs for a moment before it decided to fight for freedom by way of harsh, sharp bursts. If his coughing drew the attention of others, he didn’t notice. It didn’t draw yours, and that was for the best. He needed another second to breathe; to watch your face light up under the influence of the infant in your arms.
Two months old, that’s what Rooster had told him.
You’d left town one night, leaving no note, no means of contact except through your parents who texted Rooster every once in a while to let him know you were Ok, but never to tell him where you were. Maybe they didn’t know either. Then, according to Rooster, you showed up at his door with a bag, a smile of apology, and a two-month-old baby cradled in a wrap around your chest.
Jake didn’t know what to do with that. He didn’t know how to process what you’d brought with you, or why you went to Rooster instead of him. Maybe one more thing that didn’t matter at the end of the day. As it was, everything in front of him was too much to handle.
“I don’t want to overstep,” Rooster said through the phone. His call had woken Jake, but the anxiety in Rooster’s tone cleared any grogginess faster than a cup of coffee. “Did you and Y/N ever…?”
Jake swallowed and sat up a little straighter in bed, running a hand down his face. Everyone had guessed there had been something going on between you and him. Everyone assumed that even if there wasn’t, if they were wrong, eventually the two of you would get there. You’d figure it out because it seemed inevitable. Jake had always hoped they were right. He’d pined for painfully long, and while it seemed like you felt something for him too, he wasn’t going to move until you did. And then you did.
It was simple, really. He thought there would be something more complex to the two of you finding your way into bed together, but it was so easy. So natural. Simple and easy and natural enough for you to seek him out three more times before you disappeared from his life, breaking a part of him as you did.
“Why do you ask?” Jake said.
“Um—fuck.” It was a soft curse from his friend’s mouth, just barely detectable through the speaker. But it carried a heavy weight with it that Rooster’s voice alone did not. “Are you sitting down?”
“Yea.”
“Good.”
The seconds passing were nearly as painful as the day you left—that moment he realized you were no longer in his bed. He’d called everyone. No one had an answer for him. “Rooster, what the fuck is going on?”
He sighed, which was never good. Rooster wasn’t much of the sighing type. Sighing meant thinking. And he wasn’t much of the thinking type anymore, either. Hadn’t been since Mav had knocked that behavior out of him while he was in the air. That new mentality just so happened to carry into the rest of his life, and he lived in a world of impulsivity. Don’t think, just do. It was the exact same with his words. Rooster only ever spoke his mind, didn’t hold back, didn’t hesitate, and yet now he was.
“She’s back, Jake," he finally said. "Showed up last night.”
His heart stopped beating. He felt it seize in his chest. And then it began again, starting with incredible force and livening his entire body.
“But, um…that’s not all,” Rooster continued. “She’s got a baby with her, and—” His breath was shaky, matching Jake’s hands. “Alright, I’m just going to say it—the kid looks exactly like you, Seresin. Spitting fucking image. Now, if you two never got together then I’ll chalk it up to a wild coincidence, but if you did…” He paused. “If you did, I think you need to get over here.”
Jake had never run so fast in his life, never driven so recklessly, never stormed through the front door of someone’s home the way he did Rooster’s, but how could he not?
“Where is she?”
Rooster shot to his feet from his spot on the couch. “At the store. She took the kid with her. We should probably wait—”
“The one down the street?”
“Yea, but—what are you doing?”
He was already at the door, the knob squeezed viciously in his grip. “I have to see for myself,” Jake said. “I won’t ambush her. I’ll keep my distance, but I have to see.”
And he saw…everything. The woman he loved, casually walking up and down the aisles of the grocery store, looking at labels and deciding on brands and placing things in a cart, with his baby strapped to her chest.
And that was his baby. He knew the moment he saw the eyes that were his, just smaller and on a face full of features that were also his, save for the curve of the lips that belonged entirely to you. Had his mother been by his side, she might’ve stumbled back from how similar this baby looked to her own. He would have too had his feet not been stuck to the floor.
Every bit of him was holding back from reaching for you as his instincts demanded of him, but he had to move before you saw him. You could turn your head at any moment. So he had to go.
—--
“When did you even…I mean, everyone always figured you would…but…when?”
Jake lifted his head from where it was resting over the back of the couch. “About a month before she left. A few times.”
Rooster nodded. “She’ll be back soon. Are you sure you want to do this now?”
“I–”
As if on cue, the front door opened and you stepped through with a bag of groceries in each hand, one of which fell when your eyes met Jake’s. Little jars rolled across the floor, making the only sound in the otherwise dead silence of the room. His lips parted, but nothing could slip out of them, nothing that would make reasonable sense, anyway. His mind was too much of a jumbled mess.
The baby broke the tension, its little wiggle causing you to glance down at the tiny head resting against your chest. You set the other bag down and took an immediate turn to the left through another door that Jake knew led to Rooster’s guest room. You returned a moment later, without the baby, your arms crossed in front of you as you walked toward him.
He thought he would be mad; maybe betrayed; at the very least bitter and devastated, but all he wanted was to pull you to him and hold you and kiss you and thank whatever deity necessary for returning you to him.
“You couldn’t have kept it to yourself for a little?”
He didn’t know what you meant until he realized you were looking directly at Rooster.
“Sorry, sweetheart,” Rooster replied. He nudged his head Jake’s way. “He was a fucking mess when you left, and it’s so obvious that the kid is—” He paused when your eyes fell to the wooden flooring. “I’m sorry. I’ll give you two some space.”
Jake waited until his friend was gone before he dared to take a step your way, but he stopped short at the hand you held up.
“Y/N…”
“I don’t want to argue with you,” you said. “I’m not going to get into why I did what I did other than to say that I thought it was best for you, me, and her.” Your arms fully uncrossed and one hand began to pick at the other’s fingernail. “At the time, anyway.”
“She’s mine.” It wasn’t a question. He knew it. He knew it in his soul that the little girl in the next room belonged to him as much as she did you. But still, he needed to hear you say it; needed to watch the shape of your lips form the words.
You nodded. “She’s yours.”
“And were you going to tell me?”
“I came back to tell you,” you said without a lick of hesitation in your voice; something that made him feel a bit lighter. “I wasn’t sure how I was going to do it yet, but I didn’t want her to wake up one day and start asking me fair questions that I only had unfair answers to. I couldn’t imagine telling her that her father had no idea she existed. So,” you took a deep breath, “I figured I’d see if you might want her, too.”
If. He could’ve laughed under different circumstances. If he wanted his daughter? There was nothing to mull over or consider. Of course, he wanted his daughter. Her and you, if you’d have him. But he couldn’t press that now.
“What’s her name?”
“My family calls her Evy, but it’s Eve.”
“After my grandmother?”
“She was always nice to me when she would come to town, and I know you love her.” Your shoulders rose and fell in a shrug, but he knew there was nothing nonchalant about it. It was a deliberate choice, a careful choice. You could’ve named her anything under the sun. You could’ve named her after your own family, but you didn’t. “I wanted our daughter to have something of you other than just your DNA.”
The weight was back. A heaviness in the air from the beauty of what you’d just confessed mixed with the undeniable question of What now? He wasn’t going to push you. You were in complete control, always had been. Control over him, over what happened between you, over the future he had once hoped you may share—the future he thought was lost, but maybe could now be found.
“Do you want to see her?”
His eyes widened, a confusing emotion filling his heart. He wasn’t sure you would offer, and giving him that chance swelled the love he felt for you. But more than that, adding to the confusing feeling was the hopeful note in your tone. Did you imagine he might deny you? Did you think he’d turn his child away?
“Yes,” he said with absolute surety, and by the grin you gave in return, he knew you felt his sincerity.
You turned, leading him into the room he’d spent a drunk night or two in. A room in which he’d woken up insanely hungover and begging for the sun to die just to give him some relief. The irony. He silently snickered. You moved aside, facing him as he took in the sight before him.
Your baby—his baby—laid on her back in the small travel crib, her eyes closed and body wrapped up snuggly in one of those sleep wraps he saw his sister use on her son. Her delicate face was so peaceful. Her long lashes rested on plump, rosy cheeks. Her lips were parted the slightest, the sweetest breaths making the softest of sounds. Her dusting of blond hair reflected the slim ray of sunlight sneaking through the drawn curtains turning the strands into pure gold.
Unshed tears stung the corners of his eyes.
“You can hold her if you want.”
“She’s—she’s asleep. I can’t—”
“She’s a heavy sleeper,” you said. “Honestly, the best baby, Jake.”
Of course, she is, he thought. If she was anything like you, she’d be perfect. She was already perfect.
Reaching into the crib, you carefully grabbed the baby and held her out to Jake. He’d held a baby before, plenty of times, but something about holding his own…he couldn’t describe it fully, just that it made his nerves fire off. His fingers began to twitch, but when he looked at you, he saw the familiar glassiness coating your irises and you nodded in encouragement.
That was all he needed: the mother of his baby asking him to hold their daughter. So he did, extending his arms and gratefully accepting his little gift.
She was so small. His hands and arms and chest dwarfed her compared to how she looked against your body. Up close, she was porcelain in form, fragile and light, and he would surrender his every breathing moment to protect what you and he had made.
A soft sob echoed in his ear and Jake’s head shot up to see those tears had fallen, crafting rivers down your cheeks as your hand covered your mouth.
“I’m sorry.” The apology was muffled through your fingers. You shook your head and finally dropped your hand. “I’m sorry, I just didn’t think—I didn’t think I would ever see this.”
With the hand not cradling his child, Jake cupped your cheek, smoothing your tears back into your skin with his thumb. You leaned into his touch and he suppressed a gasp. The first time in a year that he’d felt you, and it was like coming home. He’d missed everything about you, every ounce of your being and presence. He missed your scent filling the air: the vanilla perfume, the fruity shampoo, the minty chapstick that he’d pick up right when he was about to kiss you. All of it. Everything. And now you were here, and he wouldn’t be able to let go.
“Why did you leave me?” he whispered.
“We had only slept together a few times,” you sniffled. “Doctor said I got pregnant that first time. Good on us for using a condom, right?”
He chuckled half-heartedly. Neither of you had one on you that night, and foolishly, neither of you cared. Pent-up desperation took over, and being inside of you, feeling you, became his sole need. Nothing short of you shoving him away could have stopped him.
“Anyway, this wasn’t in your plans,” you said. “And I didn’t want to force it on you, but I also didn’t want to give her up. It scared me, so…”
“I would’ve helped you. I loved you. I’d been in love with you. I would’ve—”
“You loved me?”
Oh. He hadn’t planned on saying it. Certainly not now. Before you left, he’d hoped you already knew somehow. Then you were gone and he was sure the opportunity to tell you would never be within reach again. But, intentionally or not, you just presented him with a moment for the words to fall right out of his mouth, so they did.
“Well…yea,” he said. “You could’ve told me you wanted a baby and I would’ve given you one.”
Your eyes shifted from his and you stared into the blank space next to his head, like your brain had short-circuited and your whole world was flashing before your eyes. You took a wobbly step back and dropped to sit on the edge of the mattress. Jake gave another long look at his daughter before kissing her forehead and placing her back in the crib.
Kneeling in front of you, he said, “I still love you.” When you didn’t speak, he grasped your hands in his, intertwining your fingers. “I love you, and I already love our daughter. And I want you to stay. I need you to stay with me.”
He could hear his heartbeat in his ears. Only you had that effect on him and he couldn’t say that he didn’t once hate it. It drove him insane for ages. He would simply think about you and the beating would start. That thumping would keep him awake at night, distract him at work, drown out the voices of his coworkers, but he accepted it now. It was an indicator of what he felt for you and that was too real and honest and beautiful to be bothered by.
Finally, your fingers squeezed his back. A sign, small as it was, that you were understanding.
“Look at me,” he whispered, and you did. He smiled as he peeled his fingers away from yours to frame your face between his hands. His thumbs ran along your cheekbones, then he leaned in a little closer. “Come here.” Another whisper, a bit broken on the final syllable.
You didn’t protest when he pulled your face to his. You didn’t push him back when hot breaths caressed each other's mouths. Your fingers loosely fisted the collar of his shirt and you let his lips brush over yours in a gentle kiss.
And that was it. You were it. You had always been it for him. He knew it then, and he knew it now. But he didn’t want to overwhelm you.
He pulled back a few inches to grant you some space, but your mouth chased after his, your hands sliding into his hair and holding him so you could force your lips together again. Harder, hotter, more desperate. You’d missed him, too. It was undeniable now.
“Promise me, honey,” He said when you separated to breathe. "I can't lose you. Not again."
“I promise, Jake.” Your eyelids fell closed and you rested your forehead against his. “We’re not leaving you.”
description: jakes nieces and nephews are in town and he’s supposed to babysit tonight, but an emergency comes up at work and he needs your help with the kids
sequel: thank you, again
Tumblr media
“Jake, we need you for this drill, you weren’t here this afternoon and you need to run through it,” he heard Maverick’s pleading voice over the phone.
“Listen, Mav, my nieces and nephews are in town and I can’t just leave em’, they’re too little,”
“Can you get someone else to watch them?”
He thought for a moment, maybe he could get you to watch them. You were pretty close friends, you’d known each other since the first time in San Diego and you had done favors for each other in the past, but this was a big favor to ask.
“I… I’ll see what I can do Mav,”
“Thanks, Jake. See you at base,” he heard the other end of the line hang up and he sighed.
Little footsteps pattered down the hallway floor, “Uncle Jake!!”
His nieces and nephews ran into his office room, “Can we play now?”
“Of course, kiddos, just let me make one more call,”
“Okay,” the kids retreated back into the living room to resume their game and Jake picked up his phone. The line rung twice before he heard your voice.
“Jake?”
“Hey, I need your help,”
“I’m not bailing you out of jail again-” He said your name firmly, interrupting your thought.
“No, I just need help with the kids,”
“The what?”
“Listen, Mav is pissed I wasn’t running the drills today, my sister and her kids are in town and I was with them, now she’s out for the night and left me with the kids and I can’t just leave them-”
“Jake I asked about the kids, not your whole life story. I’ll be over in a few,”
“Thank God, okay I’ll see you soon,” he hung up the phone and left his office to spend the last few minutes with the kids.
15 minutes later you arrived at his house, before you could even knock you could hear the kids in the house. “Uncle Jake!! There’s a girl at the door!!!”
Moments later Jake opened the door, revealing him to have half of his uniform on and a child hanging on his arm.
“Hey, please, come in,” you stepped through the threshold and into his open living room. He set the child down and introduced you to the rest of the kids, “I have to go get changed, just hang with em’ here for a minute,”
The kids were on the floor playing with Legos, you sat down next to one of his nieces, couldn’t have been older than 4 or 5. “Can I play with you?”
“Sure!”
You picked up a Lego character and started playing along with her game, soon the others joined in. Jake stood in the doorway watching the sight in front of him. He was about to intervene to say goodbye when he heard his older niece ask you a rather personal question.
“Are you Uncle Jake’s girlfriend?”
Now this was something you were not prepared for. While you had fallen for him years ago, you didn’t know if he had felt the same way. Yes, you’ve kissed maybe once, but you were both drunk, so does it even count?
You’ve never really talked to him about anything like that even though you’ve thought about numerous times during your friendship, but the kids didn’t need to know all of this information.
“No, I’m not, we’re just friends,” you smiled at the girl, who seemed to be content with your answer.
“Okay. I think you should be Uncle Jake’s girlfriend, because I like playing with you,” Jake blushed from the conversation. He thought that you should be his girlfriend as well.
He made his presence known as he cleared his throat, he walked over to the huddle of children and bent down to talk to them, “Alright guys, I’m going now, but I promise I’ll be back later.” You had never heard him speak this soft, his tone was much different than the cocky, loud tone you were used to.
He kissed each one of them on the head before heading towards the door, “Wait, Uncle Jake!”
He turned around at the sudden exclamation, “You forgot to kiss someone,” he looked at his nephew who was pointing to you, you stood up and walked over to him, giving him a friendly hug at the door.
His nephew seemed to be okay with the hug because he went right back to playing. “Okay, I’ll be back in a few hours,” he looked at his watch, “Dinner is in the fridge and bedtime is at 8:00 for the younger ones, 8:45-9 for the older ones,”
“Got it,”
“Thank you, again,”
“Jake, really, it’s no problem. Have fun and good luck with Mav, you’re gonna need all the luck you can get,”
“Darlin’ I got skill, I don’t need luck,” he winked at you before leaving the house. You watched through the window as his truck pulled out of the driveway and drove down the road.
-
Hours later Jake came home worn out from the drills, he opened his front door to see you reading on the couch.
“Hey,” he set his keys down on the entrance table.
“Hey,” you smiled and looked up from the book you were reading, “I just put the last of the kids down,”
“We’re they good for ya?”
“Of course they were,” you set Jake’s book on the coffee table and stood up, grabbing your purse and heading toward the door.
“You can stay! If you want, it’s pretty late, you know,” smiling at the gesture you walked closer to the door.
“I would, but I have work in the morning and Mav is not going to be happy if I show up late,” Jake’s smile faltered a minuscule bit, but you noticed it, “But, you could make it up to me another way?”
His smile returned and he walked closer to you, “Dinner? Tomorrow night?”
“Sounds amazing,” he leaned down and quickly pecked your lips, you smiled and grabbed his collar, bringing him in for a longer kiss.
You broke apart and reached for the door handle, “I’ll see you tomorrow, Bagman.” You walked to you car and got in, seeing Jake watching you from the window. You gave him one last wave before driving off thinking about tomorrow night.
Tomorrow night.
COME HELL OR HIGH WATER | j.seresin
summary: the dagger squad gets deployed on another mission and Jake is assigned as the mission leader. When he and Rooster’s planes go down in enemy territory, Jake’s only thought is getting back to his wife and daughters.
warnings: angst (with a happy ending), doubt, incorrect navy facts (I’m not that knowledgeable about the workings of the navy). Written mostly on my phone in the queues at Disney, so sorry if there are any spelling or punctuation errors.
The first thing on Jake's mind is his family.
The faces of his Y/n, Olive, and Charlotte. His girls. As everything appears to go to shit, as trees rustle and move around him, and Rooster shouts and curses to his left, Jake's resolve hardens even more than ever.
The mission had been going so well. The dagger squad had successfully taken out the target they had been deployed to remove, and the flyback had just about started. The removal of the target had alerted the enemy (as they had expected) but none of the officers who had prepared the pilots for this mission could have foreseen just how quickly the enemy pilots would retaliate. They had calculated the times down to the second needed for the flyback to the ship, but the second the enemy pilots had engaged Hangman and Rooster's planes in a dogfight, the timing had gone out the window.
"Get back to the ship Daggers 3 and 4!" Jake yells to his team as he hears Phoenix and Payback talking over the radio about coming in as backup, "Dagger 2 and I will take out these guys and get back right behind you!"
"Hangman..." Phoenix sounds unsure, as she watches Payback and Fanboy obey their friend's (and leader's) orders and begin the route back to the ship.
"NOW, Dagger 3! Go, go go!" Jake yells as he and Rooster fly as if they are one mind, evading and attacking simultaneously to get the three enemy jets off their backs.
Phoenix has a bad feeling as she obeys, knowing she can't ignore a direct order from her mission leader. Images of Hangman's family plague her mind as she leaves her friends to fend for themselves. She thinks of you, and how wrecked you'll be if Jake doesn't come back.
"Dagger 1, watch your right side!" Rooster yells, spotting the third enemy plane trying to get into position to shoot Hangman down.
"I see him! I see him!" Jake’s voice is strained as he maneuvers his plane out of harm's way.
"One down, two to go," Rooster yells as he pulls up so that his plane inverts completely, letting the enemy pilot’s plane fly directly underneath his fast enough to drop behind it and shoot.
"One left!" Jake yells as the second plane goes up in an explosion. He's still cautious, but he's starting to believe that this setback will be just that, a setback.
That's when everything goes to shit.
"Dagger 1, watch your back!" Rooster yells, the panic evident in his voice, as he sees the final enemy pilot's plane release a missile that was headed straight for Hangman's wing.
"Shit! Shit! Shit!" Jake yells as the missile makes contact with the left wing of his jet.
Rooster can do nothing but watch as his friends plane goes down, shock coursing through him, causing him to miss that the final pilot had released another missile. He hears it coming towards him a second too late, and there’s nothing he can do but brace as it makes contact with his wing.
Jake manages to right his plane just enough to where ejection is a safe option and he pulls his lever, shooting out of his plane as he hears another explosion go off behind him.
"Fuck!" Rooster’s voice comes crackling through Jake’s helmet as he ejects too, the two pilots keeping each other’s gaze as they float to the ground.
As soon as Jake’s feet touch the ground, he’s off running, releasing his parachute and leaving it there in the grass.
Swinging his head from left to right, he searches through the tree coverage for any sign of life, trying to find his wingman so that they can find a way out of here together. They have to find a way back.
Just as he’s starting to wonder if Rooster’s plane going down was some sick hallucination, Jake feels a hand on his shoulder. He whirls around, already on high alert, but calms slightly when he spots that it’s just Rooster, panting slightly.
"You ok, man?" Jake pants out, breathing heavily.
"Yeah, yeah I’m fine. You?" Rooster looks almost pitying, knowing just what Jake stands to lose if they don’t make it out of this.
"Yeah," Jake says, but Rooster can see it in his friends eyes, he’s on the verge of panic.
"Hey, man, we’re gonna get you back to them."
Jake smiles briefly, nodding his thanks to Bradley as he pulls in a few ragged breaths.
"Ok," the two men straighten together and look around them, taking in their surroundings, "what’s our game plan?"
✯✯✯✯
"Mama! Mama!" You breath deeply and paste a smile on your face, as you hear your daughter’s little voice yell from across the playground.
"Yes, Sugar?" You ask Olive as she skids to a stop next to the bench you’re sitting on.
"Are Dada and his team almost done with their mission yet?"
Your heart drops slightly at the reminder that your husband and his squad (who have quickly become your friends) are putting themselves in danger for their mission, but you don’t let it show on your face.
"I don’t know Liv, but you remember what Daddy told you and your sister right before he left, right?"
Your Olive nods eagerly, grinning up at you as she answers.
"Yeah, Daddy said that no matter what, he loves us and he will always come back to us. He said if anything goes wrong he will get home, come hell or high water! He promised."
She looks so proud of herself for remembering everything Jake told her a week ago, when he had bid them goodbye at the docks, you reach down and scoop her into your lap, careful not to jostle Charlotte, who is sleeping on the other side of the bench, head resting on the bag you had brought to the park with you.
"That’s right, Sugar," you coo, as your daughter tucks her head under your chin, curling into your lap.
"He promised, right Mama?"
Olive’s voice sounds so small, and your heart breaks a little at how unsure she sounds.
"Yeah, Liv, he did and you know that Daddy never breaks his promises, right?"
You feel Olive’s hair brush across your neck as she nods, and one of her hands comes up to play with the little heart shaped locket Jake had gotten you as a present, right before the twins had been born. Cuddling your little girl closer, you think back to the morning when he had given it too you, and the promise your husband had made.
You had been lying in bed, beyond tired because the twins kicking had kept you up all night, when Jake had come into the room after showering off his morning run.
"Hey darlin," he had whispered, slipping into the bed behind you, coming up to your back and reaching a hand around to rest on your baby bump, "how are my girls doing this morning?"
You had sighed, as your husband pressed soft kisses to the sensitive skin at the base of your neck.
When you hadn’t responded, Jake had gently turned your face to his, his green eyes lighting with worry as he took in your tear stained face.
"Oh baby…" he had cooed, brushing away your tears with the pad of his thumb, "what’s the matter?"
"I just…." You had taken a deep, shaky breath as Jake pressed gentle kisses to your cheeks, where the tears had been moments before, "I’m terrified that….that something will happen to…" you hadn’t been able to even voice the possibility of losing Jake. But, he had known, like he always did.
"Listen to me, darlin," he had said, leaning down to brush what was possibly the sweetest kiss of your life on your lips, "I know that my job is not the safest one there is and I can’t promise you that nothing will ever happen, because it’s out of my control."
Your eyes had refilled with tears, and Jake had leaned down, kissing you again while he wrapped his arm protectively and lovingly over your bump.
"But I can promise you that no matter what, wherever I am, whatever I’m doing, I will always fight to get back to you and our babies."
Jake had then let go of you for a moment, which caused you to whine slightly and Jake to smile as he had turned to pull a small box from his nightstands top drawer. He had turned back to you and held the small maroon box in between you.
"I wanted to give this to you when the girls were born, but I think now is better."
You had taken the box in your hands before glancing up at him, laughter in your eyes for the first time since the thoughts had started to plague your mind.
"Uh, Jakey, I don’t know if you remember, but you already did this part," you had teased, flashing your left ring finger at your husband, who had let out one of the laughs you loved so dearly, and pressed a kiss to the pair of rings sitting there.
"Darlin I’m not proposing again, this is something else. It’s just as important though…" he had trailed off and lifted his hand to the box easing the top up.
You had gasped at the beauty of the little heart shaped gold locket that lay nestled in the box. It was engraved with tiny little lilies, the first flowers Jake had ever gotten you when you started dating.
"Jakey…"
"Turn it over, baby," he had cut you off, and you did, seeing the small phrase on the back.
‘Come hell or high water’ was engraved within a ring of lilies, right in the center of the back side of the locket.
"It’s a promise," Jake had whispered, brushing a piece of hair back from your face to press a kiss to your temple. "No matter what, I will fight to get home to you, come hell or high water."
"Mama?"
Charlotte’s sleepy voice breaks you out of the memory as she stirs on the bench next to you.
"Yeah, baby?" You say, bringing a hand up to stroke through Olive’s hair as she keeps her hand on the locket, cheek to your throat.
"Can we go home now?"
"Of course baby." You start to gather your things, gently easing Olive off of your lap, your heart warming as the twins grabbed each other’s hands.
The three of you make your way home, the girls holding onto each other the whole way there.
"Why don’t you guys go play for a little bit," you say as you unlock the door to your little house that you and Jake have slowly been making into a home, “I’ll bring you two some apple slices.”
"Ok, mama!" The two little girls say, before taking off down the hall to their bedroom, as you made your way into the kitchen.
Before grabbing the apples, you lean against the kitchen island and look down at your locket, opening the clasp and taking in the two pictures on the sides.
The first picture was one of you and Jake on your wedding day. It had been taken by the photographer right towards the end of the night. You were being dipped by Jake, who was smiling down at you with his heart in his eyes. Your head had been tipped back, mouth open mid-laugh. It was quite possibly your favorite picture from the day.
The second picture was a shot of Jake on the day your daughters had been born. Their birth had been relatively easy (considering that you had carried the twins to full term) and the picture in the locket captured the moment when Jake had first held Charlotte and Olive in his arms.
You sigh, stroking your hand over the pictures, not needing to remove them to see the 'Seresin Family' engraving in the windows. You raise the locket to your lips and brush a light kiss over the pictures, before closing the clasp and turning to grab a couple apples and a knife to make your daughters a snack.
Just as you're placing the apple slices into a bowl, your phone starts ringing from where you had left it in the bag by the door. Wiping your hands, you grab your phone and answer the call.
"Hello?"
There's silence for a moment and then a shuddering breath comes over the line.
"Hi, Darlin," Jake's voice sounds shaky, which immediately gets your heart going fast, fear creeping into your bones.
"Jake," you say, as he lets out another shaking breath. is he crying?
"Baby, what's wrong? what's happened?"
"I...." Jake has to stop for a minute, and you stay quiet, letting him have a moment. "The mission is complete, we're returning to base right now."
Your heart soars and you can't keep the smile off of your face, and out of your voice.
"That's great, Jakey!"
There is silence again, and your smile drops a little.
"Jake, what happened?"
"I don't....I don't think I can talk about it all yet, but mine and Bradley's planes went down in enemy territory. We....it took us two days to find a way back into communication range with the ship."
"Oh, Jake...." You whisper, hand over your mouth, "I'm so sorry baby. What can I do to help you?"
"Just be waiting when I get home."
✯✯✯✯
The next morning, you wake up at 5:30 am. After flipping over a few times, you give in to the fact that you aren’t going to be able to sleep. You sit up, swinging your feet over the edge of the bed, hand coming up to scrub over your eyes.
Getting out of bed, you walk into your closet and find a pastel green sweat suit to wear to protect against the slight chill in the air. You pull your hair up into a claw clip and head out into the kitchen and living room area. You tidy up a bit, and pour some cereal into a bowl for yourself as you sit at the island, scrolling through your phone idly.
By the time it’s a reasonable hour to wake the girls up, you’ve cleaned nearly the entire house and made a list of things you need to restock in the kitchen.
“Good Morning,” you sing softly, flipping on the fairy lights above your daughters beds as you go over to their closet to pull matching sweat suits to yours out, laying a pink one on the end of Charlotte’s bed and a purple one on Olive’s.
Olive is the first one to wake up, turning over under her mountain of blankets to blink blearily up at you.
“Good morning, Mama,” she says, a little smile pulling at the corners of her mouth.
You smile at her and ask her to please get dressed before making your way over to Charlotte’s bed, nestled in the corner of the room. The top of her dark blonde head is the only part of her visible under her soft white duvet with little pink flowers on it. You sit down, putting your hand on her shoulder, gently shaking her awake. She doesn’t say anything as her head turns over her shoulder, eyes blinking open slowly.
“Hey, baby,” you say, “it’s time to wake up!”
“Otay,” she says, her voice still scratchy from sleep and she allows you to pull the covers back far enough for her to scoot out of them.
As soon as her feet touch the ground, Olive is right there, fully dressed in the sweatpants and little matching hoodie. She holds out her arms for a hug and Charlotte steps straight into them, curling her own arms around her sisters waist.
“Good morning, Lottie.”
“Morning, Liv.”
You smile as you head to the door, calling over your shoulder.
“Your breakfast is on the table, girls, so please come out when Charlotte is dressed.”
“Otay!” You hear Olive shout back, making you smile.
A little while later, after the girls have finished their breakfast and the three of you had flopped onto the couch for some snuggles (a daily occurrence for you whenever Jake was deployed), Olive looks like she’s just about to nod off and Charlotte doesn’t look much more awake. Your daughters heads both snap up, however, as the doorbell ringing sounds through the house.
“Mama, is that…?” Olive is already up and bouncing on her toes as she looks at you expectantly. You smile, watching your daughter’s faces light up, as you nod.
“Let’s go welcome Daddy home, yeah?” You ask, already up and moving to the door, the twins hot on your heels.
Your heart is pounding as your hand comes up to the lock, turning it and pulling the door open. And just like that, your weeks of worry and stress melt off of you in an instant. Because he’s here, your Jake is right in front of you, looking tired, but whole. Looking alive.
“Hey, Darlin.” His tired smile seeps into your soul and you take a step forward, and then another and before you can even blink, Jake has dropped his duffle onto the front stoop and has you wrapped in a tight embrace. His face goes immediately to the crook of your neck, pressing into the sensitive skin there as he pulls you as close to his body as possible. You reciprocate the hug, and smile as you see and feel your girls attach themselves to a leg each.
“Hi Jakey,” you whisper, running your fingers through his hair, trailing your hands up and down his back.
You stand there for a long moment, before Jake finally manages to detach himself from you to bend and scoop his daughters into his arms. Olive and Charlotte both immediately curl their arms around his neck and start sprinkling kisses on his cheeks.
Later, when your little family has fallen asleep snuggled close together on the couch, the tv still playing a movie quietly, you look over at your husband, where he’s lying with Charlotte curled up on his chest and Olive plastered to his side. You softly stroke over the worry lines on his forehead. You know that he won’t be ready to open up for a while about what happened to him and Rooster, but you silently vow to just be there for him, for whatever he needs, in the next couple weeks.
Come hell or high water.
You’re running around your house like a headless chicken.
As much as you hate to admit it, you’re nervous. Going to dinner with Jake sounds a lot like a date. Even though neither of you have called it that.
You still have over an hour until he picks you up but you’re all ready to go. You took Josie and Muffin to Penny’s place and when you got back you didn’t know what else to do so you started to get ready. And now you’re just pacing. Sitting on the couch for two seconds, checking the time, getting up to go to the kitchen, check the time again, go back to the living room, check the time, go into the hall to touch up your lipstick…
Your pacing is interrupted by the sound of your doorbell.
It makes you jump but then you’re at the door in a few strides. You open the door and are more than surprised to see Jake.
“I thought you were picking me up at seven?” You checked the time enough times to know it’s barely six.
“Is Josie here?” The question takes you aback. And that’s when you notice how frazzled he looks. His hair is a mess and his clothes look like he’s just thrown them on without really thinking about it. Is his shirt inside out?
“What’s going on?” You step to the side and motion for him to enter.
“I need to see Josie.” He runs his hand through his hair frantically as he walks through the door.
“She’s not here. I took her to Penny like an hour ago.” He halts his steps, his head falling between his shoulders. “What’s going on? Are you okay? Did something happen?”
You follow Jake into the living room where he sits down on the sofa, head in his hands.
“Jake?” You sit down next to him.
He sighs heavily, then drops his hands, his gaze focused on the floor. “A plane was hit with a birdstrike today. The pilots had to eject.” He pauses for a moment. “They’re fine. It just brought back a lot of memories.” He turns to look at you and you know he’s talking about whatever happened that made him withdraw from you so suddenly.
“What kind of memories?” You ask softly, knowing full well that you’re on thin ice asking this question. Will he shut down again?
He doesn’t. Instead, he reaches for you hand, holding it tightly as if it was his lifeline.
“My first time at Top Gun … we were doing some basic training maneuvers one day. Nothing special. Nothing out of the ordinary. But then suddenly one of my wingman’s engines caught fire. He was almost as stubborn as I am, always wanting to show people that he’s the best of the best.” You had a bad feeling about how this story was going to end. It must have been bad for Jake to have been so traumatised by it still. “He didn’t eject in time.”
You place your hand in front of your mouth in shock.
Jake frowns, his face full of pain. “I saw his plane go down and crash. I don’t know how I managed to land. I guess I was just moving on autopilot. I wasn’t the same after that. I mean, you already know that …” He laughs humourlessly. “It made me realise that I was not invincible. I could die at any moment in time. Just like my friend. My wingman.” He takes a deep breath. “I’m sorry I couldn’t talk about this to you. And I’m sorry I lashed out at you. I just had all of this guilt and fear bottled inside of me. I thought keeping my distance from you was keeping you safe. I didn’t mean to be so harsh I just—“
“Hey, it’s okay. C’mere.” You wrap your arms around him, just holding him while he buries his face in your shoulder.
“I’m so sorry sweetheart, you’ve got to believe me.”
“I do.” You shush him, running your hands through his hair soothingly. “Of course I believe you. I can’t even imagine what that must’ve been like. I’m sorry you had to go through that.”
Jake finally reciprocates the hug, his strong arms wrapping around you before he pulls you onto his lap, his green eyes focused on yours. “I’m sorry I didn’t apologise and explain sooner. That I didn’t seek you out sooner. I just wanted to get better first. The way I was after the accident … You didn’t deserve that. Had I known about Josie I would’ve reached out sooner. Gone to therapy sooner. I just feel like I missed so much and it’s all my fault.”
Your heart breaks for him. You wish you had gotten through to him back then, even just a little bit. Just enough that he didn’t pull away completely.
“We can’t change the past. You’re here now. That’s what counts.”
Jake smiles and the air of the room seems to get a little bit lighter. Your fingers are still running through his hair, and now that the heavy emotions seem to have left, you’re aware of how close the two of you are. And you don’t mind it. You don’t mind it at all.
One of your hands moves to cup the side of his face and he leans into your touch, closing his eyes.
“What do you say, instead of going out for dinner I’ll whip something up for us and we’ll have a chill evening in? I don’t know about you but I don’t feel like going out anymore.”
“That sounds amazing.” He opens his eyes again and places a soft kiss on the inside of your palm. It makes your heart flutter.
Reluctantly, you get up from your seat in his lap. He stands as well and for a second he just looks at you.
“You look stunning, by the way.” He gives you a crooked smile. “Sorry I kind of ruined our … dinner.”
“That’s okay. You didn’t ruin anything. I’d rather have you be open and honest with me than take me out to dinner while you’re miserable. I can call Penny and tell her to bring Josie and Muffin over? She’s supposed to look after them until tomorrow, but if you wanna see Josie…”
He gives you another smile, this one appreciative. “It’s okay. I’m sure she’s fine. I just … What happened today freaked me out and made me realise how much I have to lose should anything ever happen to me.”
His eyes mist over once more. “Oh, Jake.” You wrap your arms around him again. You just wanna bundle him up in blankets and tell him everything’s going to be fine. You’ve never seen him like this. Because he didn’t let you see him like this. And it means so much to you that he learned to speak about his emotions and trusts you enough to be vulnerable in front of you.
And it’s enough of a reassurance that you can trust him, too. You knew from the moment he showed up that you’d have to tell Josie sooner or later, but now you’re not nearly as worried about it as you used to be. Him opening up to you like that proves that you can depend on him to be there for your daughter.
“C’mon. I’ll make us some dinner.”
✩̿✪̿✩̿
Having dinner with Jake was surprisingly comfortable. Not that you expected it to be uncomfortable, but you thought there would at least be some awkwardness. But no, it felt like you’ve  done this a hundred times before.
By the time you’ve cleaned everything up again, (him washing the dishes and you drying and putting them away) you almost forgot why you’ve been so sceptical when it came to Jake’s intentions. Who knew it would take one homemade dinner to have you trust him again? Okay, him opening up to you also had a lot to do with it.
“I guess it’s time for me to go.” Jake says after taking a look at the time. “Thank you for dinner. And just … listening I guess.” He shrugs his shoulders. “I’m still working on opening up about what happened. But I felt like I owed you and if I had just—“
“Hey,” you place your hand on his forearm. “It’s all in the past, remember? No use stressing about that now. Let’s start fresh, okay?”
He smiles, his eyes crinkling in the process, “Okay.”
“And we still haven’t talked about telling Josie.” You finally bring up the reason you were even having this dinner. Jake wants to tell Josie that he’s her father. And now you want to tell her, too. You’re not scared of him abandoning her. Abandoning you. Even if all you’ll ever be is friends, you’re a family now.
“Right, yeah. I didn’t know if you still wanted to talk about that …” He looks at you a little sheepishly.
“Of course, Jake. You deserve to be part of her life. I know I’ve been hesitant—“
“I understand that, sweetheart.” He interrupts you but you just keep talking.
“But you’ve shown me that you care. About Josie, about having a relationship with her. And I want you to have that and for her to know that you’re her father.”
“Really?” He seems surprised and it makes you feel a little guilty.
“Really.”
“Thank you.” The gratefulness in his voice makes you emotional, but you don’t really get to dwell on that, because the next thing you know he’s wrapped his arms around you, pulling you into a hug. “Thank you so much.”
✩̿✪̿✩̿
Jake wanted to make a day out of telling Josie that he’s her dad. He just wanted it to be special. You told him that Josie wouldn’t care either way, but to be completely honest Jake was scared that Josie would be upset. He was nervous that she wouldn’t like the idea of him being her dad. He knew that she liked him but that didn’t mean she’d like him as her father. How often had he imagined how telling her would go down? His favourite daydream these days was Josie telling him that, if she ever met her dad she’d want him to be like Jake. And then you and him would tell her that he is, in fact, her dad. And the three of you would live happily ever after. But life wasn’t a fairy tale so he didn’t know what to expect.
The training for his mission was becoming more and more stressful with less and less free time. So his plan of spending a whole day with you and Josie was looking to be pretty unrealistic. So he figured he’d at least spend an afternoon with you, maybe go to the beach and then take you to Josie’s favourite restaurant for dinner. Then he’d come home with you two and there you’d tell Josie.
Jake was nervous, but equally excited. His daughter would finally know who her father is. And he didn’t have to watch everything he says, scared of just blurting it out.
Currently he was sitting in your living room, waiting for you to get ready while listening to Josie talk about how Muffin thought it was a good idea to roll himself in mud while they went on a walk last summer.
“And then he shook himself like this,” she moves from side to side, imitating the way a dog shakes himself dry. “And mud went everywhere! And we had to walk home all covered in mud!” Her eyes are wide, her hair a little messy and Jake never knew he could love someone so much, his heart feels like it’s about to burst.
“Yeah? I bet your mom gave him a good bath after that, huh?”
Josie laughs and Jake has never heard a more beautiful sound. “No, she made us all stand in the garden and showered us with the hose!” Jake laughs, too. He wishes he could’ve been there. He’s once again reminded of how much he has missed. Granted, chances are he would’ve been on deployment anyway, but it still would’ve been different. Maybe Josie would’ve told him about it on the phone right after it happened. The thought makes him smile.
He feels Josie’s pointer finger digging into his cheek, right where his dimple is. “That looks funny.” She giggles and it makes her own dimple appear.
“You think my dimple looks funny?” Jake asks. “You’ve got one of your own.” He places his finger on her cheek the same way she’s done it. “Right there.” It makes her giggle even more.
“Does it look like yours?”
“It looks pretty much the same, yeah.” Jake smiles softly as Josie gets up from the couch and runs towards the mirror in the hallway. He gets up to follow her right as you come down the stairs, a beach bag slung over your shoulder.
“What’s going on?”
“She’s inspecting her dimple.” Jake chuckles. “She noticed mine and I told her she’s got one, too.”
You look at him for a moment, then bite your lip. “You know, I read somewhere that dimples are hereditary.”
Jake was aware that Josie got his dimple from him, but why were you bringing it up now?
“What does herdiary mean?” Josie asks and Jakes eyes widen. His heart starts pounding in his chest. He wanted to wait until tonight to tell her, but he’s honestly been eager to do it since he set foot in your house half an hour ago. And now he can’t wait. This seems like the perfect moment. You’re looking at him questioningly, waiting for his go ahead. He gives it with a small nod.
“Hereditary. That means that it’s something that can be passed down from parents to children.”
“But you don’t have one.” Josie’s face scrunches up in confusion. Jake’s hands start to shake. This is it, his life is about to change in a matter of seconds, as is Josie’s.
“But your dad does.”  You say softly crouching down next to Josie, your eyes flicking between your daughter and Jake as he copies your position on the other side of Josie.
“My dad?”
“See, Josie, there’s something we’ve been meaning to tell you…“ Jake starts, his voice shaky.
Josie gasps, her head swivelling around to look at him. “Are you my dad?” Smart girl.
Jake doesn’t know if the tone of her voice is a good or a bad sign but he can’t keep from smiling anyway. He feels his eyes burning a bit. “Yeah, peanut. I’m your dad.” He wants to see her reaction but before he can register anything she’s got her arms around his neck, squeezing tightly. He hugs her back and his heart feels lighter than before. This is definitely a good sign.
When he looks at you, you’ve got tears running down your face.
“You came back for me.” Josie whispers, but he knows you’ve heard it because you’re crying even more now.
“I did.” It’s not the whole truth, but he’ll always come back for her now that he knows she exists.
Josie pulls back quickly, her eyes wide. “But who protects us now? You need to go back! What if the bad guys come while you’re gone?” You and Jake both chuckle.
“It’s okay, peanut. There’s someone else out there protecting us right now.”
“But aren’t you the best?”
She seems genuinely concerned and as arrogant as he is and as much as he likes to think of himself as the best naval aviator out there, he doesn’t wanna worry his daughter. (And deep down he knows that the rest of his squad are just as good as him, but he’d never admit that out loud.) So he says, “I’m one of the best, yeah. But someone else who’s also one of the best took over for me while I’m here.”
That seems to appease her. She hugs him tightly again and sighs.
“Does that mean I can call you dad now?”
Jake feels like he’s been shot in the heart, but in the best way possible. “You can, if you want to. But you don’t have to.” He rubs his hand over her back as she sighs again.
“I love you, daddy.”
And that’s it. The damn is broken and Jake is crying. He feels hot tears running down his cheeks but it’s nothing against the happiness that’s spreading through his whole body. He presses her small body tighter against his. He never wants to let her go.
“I love you, too, Josie. I love you so much.”
~~~ A/N: Thank you so much for reading!! I know you’ve waited for this part for a long time (for more than one reason) so I really hope it didn’t disappoint!! <33

word count: 2.5k
summary: noticing teddy acting a little weird, you ask jake to talk to him. it's worse then you and jake ever thought.
Tumblr media
"hey bud, wanna go to 7-eleven with me?" jake asks his second oldest, leaning against the doorframe of his room.
the boy looks up from his chair, glancing to the clock that read 1:14 am before looking back to jake. "this late?"
jake smiles. "it's saturday, why not? like old times?"
theodore remains silent for a few moments, contemplating. "sure, i guess."
he slips on a random hoodie before meeting his dad at the front door.
"ready to go?" jake asks.
the young boy nods, stepping outside into the crisp night air.
the drive to 7-eleven is quick, considering it's right down the road.
the two step out of the truck, and enter the brightly lit convenience store, theodore headed to the slurpee machine, jake to the decaf coffee.
theodore gets his usual flavors, blue raspberry and cherry, and him and jake meet up at the counter.
jake pays, thanking the cashier, and they leave.
"hey, come sit with me for a sec." jake sits down on the curb, patting the space next to him.
theodore sits next to his dad on the curb.
the two sit in silence for a few minutes.
"you okay, buddy? you seem a lil' down recently." jake breaks the silence, speaking softly.
theodore shrugs. "school i guess."
jake frowns. "school?"
"ya know, the SAT, college apps, that stuff. stress."
"okay." jake nods at his sons words. "any way i can help?"
"grandpa has been saying i should apply to USNA, like cooper."
jake is taken aback. he wasn't even aware that theodore and his father were talking. "i didn't know you two were talking."
theodore shrugs. "he's been calling me a few times. keeps asking how my application is going."
jake's jaw clenches. of course, the few times his father would reach out to his grandson, would be to pressure him into joining the naval academy.
"ignore whatever he is telling you, teddy." jake says, a bitter taste in his mouth.
"would you be mad at me, if i didn't join the navy?"
jake shakes his head. "of course not, son, you know that. all i want is for you to be happy, i'll support whatever you decide."
theodore sets his slurpee down next to him. "i'm not happy."
jake frowns. "what's goin on, buddy? you can talk to me, i promise i won't judge."
lifting up his arms, he rolls his sleeves up, revealing uneven scars, band-aids covering his left wrist.
"i think something's wrong with me, dad."
jake looks away from the teenage boy next to him.
tears form in his eyes.
he takes a minute to compose himself, inhaling deep breaths, before finally turning back to his son. grabbing his hand, his calloused fingers trace over the old scars. "how long have you been doing this, teddy?"
jakes voice is low, unsteady.
theodore shrugs. "i don't know, little more than a year, i guess."
jakes eyes widen. he drops theodore's hand, before quickly standing up. "i need a minute, buddy. don't go anywhere."
jake goes back into the 7-eleven, and heads straight for the bathroom.
once inside, he falls against the back of the door, heavy sobs escaping his chest.
jake was a strong man, being his fathers son, he had to be. it took a hell of a lot to make him emotional, growing up in a household where crying is weak will do that to you, but here he was, sobbing on the bathroom floor of a 7-eleven.
becoming a father had been the best thing that ever happened to him,and an opportunity for him to break generational curses and show his children and his father and grandfather, that you could be tough and deal with your emotions in a healthy manner.
jake was taught to push those feelings deep down, and never let them out in the open, never let anyone else see them. it was in this moment, he hoped and prayed to god that theodore wasn't taking after him.
theodore had been in pain for over a year. suffering for over a year. unhappy for god knows how long.
his beautiful boy had been harming himself for over a year, and he didn't even notice.
jake felt like the worst parent in the world.
how could he not have noticed?
he tries to think back to all of the family gatherings and the birthday parties. everyone always commenting on how well mannered and mature theodore was. the nights where you guys would get home, and theodore would close himself up in his room. the weekends, where jake only saw him at dinner. the way theodore always wore long sleeves, even in the summertime.
jake had missed the signs.
growing up, theodore was always a quiet boy, very different from his siblings. his siblings were sparkplugs, reckless and always getting into trouble.
jake had liked to believe that theodore had taken after you, but after remembering the stories your mom tells of you being a raining hellfire, he wonders how truly long his boy has been feeling unhappy. was it just this past year, or was it subconsciously his whole life?
jake didn't know if he wanted the answer to that last question.
it takes a few minutes, but he finally calms himself down enough to be able to leave the bathroom.
stepping outside, he sees theodore sat in the same spot.
he frowns.
jake doesn't know what to say, or what to do. none of the parenting books covered this.
all he can do is stand and look at the broken boy in front of him.
he thinks back to when theodore was younger, about six or seven, when he and jake would go to 7-eleven every saturday at an ungodly hour (that hour being nine, 'ungodly' because his bedtime was eight.)
theodore practically running inside the store, insisting that he can dispense his own slurpee because he was a big boy. begging to get a big cup, even though he never finished it.
he was so happy then, getting to spend time with his daddy alone-without his siblings present, doing something they 'weren't supposed to do' all while keeping the promise of: no telling mama.
jake didn't see that little boy standing in front of him, and it made him so incredibly upset that he hadn't realized he was ever missing.
sitting down next to theodore, theodore looks up at him. "were you crying?"
jake nods. "i was."
theodore frowns. "i'm sorry."
jake wraps his arm around his sons shoulder, and pulls him into his side. "don't apologize, kid."
the two sit in silence for more minutes. jake, trying to figure out what to say, and theodore, silent tears rolling down his face.
jake can't put it off any longer. he grabs theodore's left wrist and holds it up between the two of them. "i don't know exactly how you are feeling, but i know that this, this is not the answer, teddy." jake pauses.
theodore remains silent.
"i love you so much, teddy bear." jake calls theodore by a nickname he hadn't used since he was a little boy.
jake had stopped calling him that when theodore became a teenager.
dad, don't call me that anymore, it's embarrassing!
theodore lets out a sob at the use of his childhood nickname, crying into his fathers jacket.
"i-im sorry, i just- i can't, dad-" theodore begins to cough over his words.
jake pulls him closer, one hand on his back, another tousled in his curly hair.
"why can't i just feel normal?"
jake remains silent, trying to formulate what he was going to say, before speaking.
"everybody loves you so much, buddy. you need help studying for your tests? i will find someone to help you. you want to explore college options? your mom and i will drive you to check out every campus in the goddamn united states if you want to. you want to join the navy? great! you don't want to join the navy? that's okay, too." jake says, his hand rubbing theodore's back soothingly.
"i don't know why you're feeling this way, teddy. i wish that there was something i could do, or say, to make it all better. i know you're not happy, and we can get you help, buddy. there's counseling, medication—we have options, teddy. better options than hurting yourself, okay?"
"okay."
jake uses his shirt to wipe the snot from theodore's nose. "i love you, nothing will ever change that."
the two of them sit together in silence, watching the cars drive past the dark road, an honest silence between them.
jake just wants his boy to be okay.
"please don't tell mom about my scars."
jake freezes. jake had completely forgotten about you, the one who had sent him to have this talk with theodore in the first place.
what was he supposed to tell you?
if you asked, he couldn't lie to you.
"promise me you won't tell her, please, dad."
god don't say that. don't make me promise.
"dad?" theodore looks up at his dad with worry.
jake sighs. "buddy, i—i can't not tell your mom."
theodore frowns. "please don't. please, i don't want her to know."
jake sighs. if theodore didn't want him to tell you, then he wouldn't tell you.
jake reaches down, and brings theodore's wounded wrist up to his lips, placing a soft kiss there.
"i won't tell your mom about this-"he gestures to theodore's scars. "but i need you promise to try your best to not do this again."
theodore remains silent for a moment. "okay."
jake takes a deep breath. "what do you use to make these?"
teddy shrugs. "whatever i can find. knives, desk corners, mainly blades, though."
jake stills. "okay, do you think i could get them from you—when we get home? are they in your room?"
theodore nods. "under my bed."
jake nods. "i want them as soon as we get home."
"okay."
it's only a few minutes later that theodore says he's ready to go.
the car ride back home is quiet, except for the radio playing lowly in the background.
once jake and theodore get home, they quietly make their way through the house. the last thing needed was someone waking up and asking questions.
stopping at the young boy's bedroom, jake's eyes follow theodore, as he slips off his shoes, and bends down to reach under his bed. standing up, he hands you a small box full of about a dozen or so box cutters.
jake frowns at the brown tainting the bandaids theodore is wearing.
"is that all?" jake asks.
"yeah." theodore says quietly.
jake nods. "let me clean your bandages, teddy, i'll meet you in the bathroom."
"wait—what are you gonna do with those."
"i'm throwin' em' out, buddy."
"not in the kitchen garbage, mom or the boys will see."
"i know, teddy. i'll meet you in the bathroom."
jake takes the tattered box full out blades outside and throws it in the neighbors garbage can.
entering the house again, he locks the door before quietly making his way to the bathroom.
shutting the door, he grabs bandages and neosporin from the cabinet above the sink.
"when did you do this?" jake asks.
"few days ago." theodore mumbles.
"did you clean them?"
theodore shakes his head. "i never really do. i usually just slap a bandaid on them."
his words make jake wince. it's a miracle none of theodore's cuts had ever gotten infected.
slowly, jake unwrapped the bandages from his wrist. his heart absolutely breaking at the sight of theodore's freshly wounded wrist.
jake turns the water on, and lets it run until it's lukewarm. with mild soap, he gently cleans theodore's cuts.
drying theodore's wrist with a spare towel, he spreads neosporin over the wounds before applying bandages to the area.
"no more, okay?"
theodore nods. "okay."
jake pulls his son in for another hug. "get to bed, it's late. we'll talk in the morning."
"goodnight, dad." theodore says quietly.
"goodnight, teddy bear."
sighing, jake puts everything back in the cabinet and heads to bed, absolutely exhausted from what was supposed to be a simple, short conversation.
stripping to his boxers, jake tries not to wake you as he climbs into bed.
"jake." you mumble, sensing the dip in weight on your left side.
you had tried your best to be awake for when they got home, but minutes turned to hours, and you accidentally had fallen asleep.
"hey, darlin'" jake says quietly, brushing your curly hair out of your face.
"how did it go?" you asked. jakes eyes were bloodshot, his skin blotchy, you knew it couldn't have gone well but you still had a tiny bit of hope.
"he's not okay, josephine." jake says. "he's been in so much pain."
tears welled in your eyes.
"how could he have been in so much pain without us noticing?"
jake held you against his chest, you crying silently at the thought of your baby boy being as unhappy as jake is describing.
jake tells you everything.
almost everything.
he leaves out what he promised theodore he wouldn't tell you, telling you that it wasn't his place, that in time, teddy would tell you himself.
"remind me tomorrow to call my dad and ask him what the fuck he's thinking."
"i will."
the conversation ended there, and though you had a few more questions, jake looked absolutely exhausted, so you didn't push him on it.
it's been a few hours, jake had since fallen asleep, but you couldn't. you laid there, your husbands heartbeat steady in your ear.
you stared at the clock that rested on the wall across from you, counting down the minutes until it was breakfast time and you had an excuse to wake up theodore.
and when you couldn't wait any longer, the clock read 5:42am. you slowly removed yourself from jakes grasp and made your way to your sons room.
"teddy?" you said quietly.
"mom?" his voice is hoarse, strangled.
you made your way over to his bed. "hi sweetheart."
you brush stray curls out of his face.
"dad told you?" he asks.
you nodded. "only some of it. whatever he promised you he wouldn't tell me, he hasn't."
your beautiful boy frowns. "i'm sorry."
"don't apologize." you tell him. "room for me?"
theodore slides his body over, and you join him in the small bed.
he rests his head on your chest.
"you hated sleeping in your bed by yourself." you tell him, quietly.
"you would beg me for story after story just so i would stay with you until you fell asleep."
"you were such a sweet boy. you still are a sweet boy." you pause, trying to stabilize your breath. "my sweet boy."
"i love you so much, okay?" you tell him.
"okay."
"i mean it, teddy. i don't want you to ever feel like you can't come to me. even if you don't think i will understand, even if i don't understand, i will always be there to listen. so will your dad."
"you promise?"
"i promise, angel."
-
a/n: this is... i don't know. this chapter is loosely based on personal experience, except, my parents weren't as nice as teddy's. i don't know how i feel about this, it did feel good to write, though, cathartic in a way i guess. this fic takes place in a universe that i'm developing where josephine and jake have four boys (you might remember josephine from the fic 'leaving' that i posted a few days ago) obviously, this is set further in the future, and i probably should wait to post this until i post the fics of the boys growing up, but i don't have any of those written and instead i hyper fixated on this, so here it is.
teddy has such a huge piece of my heart, and if any of you are feeling like teddy right now, just know that i've been there, i see you, and it does eventually get better with time.
sidenote: i have no idea what pov i want to write this in, but i guess i don't it to be y/n? i'm reading another jake series, i believe its called my girl? where its centered around an oc, but the story is written with you pronouns, and i liked how that read, so i attempted to do that here, not sure how it worked out or will work out in the future for me. as usual, i'd love to hear your thoughts about this story. this is an extremely heavy topic, and i hope i wrote about it at least decently.

To say you were thankful that Jake was home would be an understatement, not only had you missed him terribly, but Mathew had been in utter despair the whole time he was deployed. Not only had the four-year-old’s nightmares become a nightly occurrence, that landed him in your bed, but the daytime was just as hard. Maty had grown intensely attached to Jake in the short time that he had been living in the house before he was deployed, and since being home it seemed like the two were practically attached at the hip.
You knew that Jake had started waking up with Mathew in the middle of the night again, and Jake had automatically fallen into the role of soothing him. You had tried to convince Jake that he didn’t need to, that he needed and deserved to rest after the stressful deployment.
You didn’t know all of the exact details, but from the bits that Warlock had mentioned in passing, you knew that it was ranked close to the Uranium mission and that the mortality rate was high once again for the Dagger Squadron. Though thankfully they had all made it home safely and now had the week off.
You hadn’t meant to sleep in, though without Maty jumping on you this morning, you hadn’t gotten your early wake-up call. Your rub the sleep from your eye and push up to cress Jake’s side of the bed, his absence evident, given the cold sheets that surrounded you.
Jake’s t-shirt rests on your frame, slipping off your shoulder as you rise from the bed, in search of your shorts before heading out to find your boys. Your grab your scrunchy from the dresser as you leave your room and throw your hair up into a messy bun.
The sound of music drifts through the house, an old country song that you’re sure Jake has played for you before. You follow the twang of the guitar, before both Jake and Mathew’s voices ring out through the house.
We like fixing things and holding mama's hand Yeah we're just alike, hey ain't we dad?
Your breath catches at the word, you and Jake had never specifically talked about Mathew ever calling him dad and you can’t help the anxiety when it rises up in your gut. You knew Jake would never want to hurt Mathew, though you weren’t sure if that was a title Jake wanted to be called.
I wanna do everything you do So I've been watching you
Their singing continues and only grows louder as you reach the doorway. Your hip settles on the kitchen doorframe, and your gaze is met with a sight that you would happily welcome into your life forever. A shirtless Jake, with Mathew on his hip as they both sing along to the song, well Mathew yells out random words that he knows, but the smile resting on Jake’s face has butterflies erupting in your stomach.
They had always been amazing together, Jake had taken every meltdown, nightmare, or just bad day in stride, and certainly amazed you most of the time. Sure, Bradley and your father were good with Mathew, but Jake was a wonder of the world. Not only had he always taken your thoughts and opinions into account, but Jake loved Mathew the way you always hoped a man in your life would.  From that first meeting, the pair had formed an instant bond, that rivaled the one you had with Mathew as his mother.
The pair don’t notice you as they work on the ever-growing stack of pancakes.
“Daddy, make Mickey! Please?”
Hearing the name fall from Mathew’s lips, compared to a song has a silent gasp falling from your lips. The tightness in your chest grows slightly in anticipation of Jake’s sour reaction to the name. Maty wasn’t his child, why would Jake want to be called such an emotional, love-filled, life-altering title.
“You’re sure you want Mickey, buddy?”
“Mickey, daddy!”
Jake tickles at Mathew’s tummy and an eruption of giggle falls from your sweet boy, as his arms wrap tighter around Jake’s neck. As he readjusts his grip, the familiar blue material of Mathew’s blanky peeks at you over Jake’s shoulder and you almost laugh. From the moment Jake had given Maty the blanket, it was never far from reach. Mathew’s need for it only grew while Jake was deployed, and every car ride, whether it be to the beach, store, or your parents house, the blanky came.
“Alrighty, let daddy go to work!”
The second not-so-silent gasp that falls from your lips, is what gains Maty’s attention. His bright green eyes, which match that of Jake’s, land on you instantly as a high-pitch squeal yells out ‘momma.’
Both of your boys spin around easily, smiles resting easy on their faces, happy to see you for the first time this morning. Though Jake's face quickly becomes one of concern, as he takes in your expression. You hadn’t known that tears were falling from your eyes, though Mathew is quick to fill you in on the reason for the sudden change in Jake’s face.
“Momma sad? Why are you crying?”
Your hand instantly rises to your face, fingertips coming in contact with your tear-stricken face and a small laugh falls from your lips before you’re pushing off the frame and moving to them both.
“No baby, they’re happy tears. I promise.”
Your hand reaches up to stroke through Mathew’s unruly hair before you lean up and kiss him on the forehead. His own hands reach out from Jake and cover your cheeks, whipping the stray tears you had missed.  Your head settles on Jake’s shoulder, leaning into the pair enjoying the moment, and the sweet smell of vanilla drifting from the stack of pancakes on the counter.
“Alright buddy, you go get situated at the table. Momma and I will bring the pancakes to you!”
Jake sets the small boy down and gives him a wink, before sending him off to the dining room. You gently remain leaning against Jake’s shoulder, though his body shifts slightly and the arms just holding Mathew are now holding you. You nuzzle into his bare chest and enjoy the quiet thud of Jake’s heart echoing through your ear.
“Darlin’”
The arms wrapped around you move to pull you back by the shoulders, and the small whine emitted from you as you try and nuzzle deeper into Jake’s chest, has him laughing at you. Your hand finally releases their hold, and you let Jake pull you back. His hand rises to cup your cheek and get you to look at him, as his thumb stroke gently back and forth across your cheek.
“Hi, Sweets.”
“Hi, Jakey.”
A soft smile graces his face as he watches you, taking in your every breath, movement, or slight shift. The green in his eyes is prominent against the sun shining through the kitchen window, and the quick thought once again crosses through your mind, of how Mathew and he could have identical eyes.
“Did you not hear, darlin’? That’s not my name anymore.”
You don’t miss the unease tone in his voice, the slight questioning in the statement. Your own eyes search his, expecting to see some form of distaste for the name. Mathew had never called anyone that name, not even Adam. Given that Mathew was so little, but also the fact that Adam didn’t claim him, the name never came up. Sure, you’d tried to explain what a dad was to Mathew when he asked, but he always just nodded along completely understanding. Looking back now though, your description could have been the reason Jake got the title.
“I never meant for him to throw this at you, Jake.” Your hands resting at your side, raise, clasping together, then unclasping, over and over. “I can go talk to him now if it makes you uncomfortable.”
“Hey darlin’, look at me.”
His other hand rises and gently grips your cheek, forcing you to stare directly into his eyes and not waver away like you had been.
“I’ll tell you this every single day for the rest of our lives if I have to, but baby, you and Maty are it for me.” A shuddered breath creeps it way up your chest, and you can stop the sliver line of tears from forming at your water line.
“So, you wanna be–” You push a breath out, annoyed at the quiver in your voice. “You wanna be Mathew’s daddy?” You nibble at your top lip, the need to make sure that Jake wants you as well, scares you and you’re terrified of being unwanted all over again.
“And you want me?”
Your question comes out choked and the hands cradling your face, move you and pull you back into Jake’s chest. Though your anxiety ticks away at your chest and has you pulling away to look back up into his eyes.
“Sweetheart, I’ve wanted you from the first moment I saw you.” The smile Jake gives you is breathtaking, and one of your favorite looks on him. “Someday, if you’ll have me, I would like to make it official for both you and Maty.  People already think he’s mine and well, you’re too beautiful to not be a Seresin.”
A soft blush covers your cheeks, as the tension in your chest releases, and a delicate laugh falls from you. Your head instantly drops forward, with the relaxation in your neck, and finds home back against Jake’s chest. Your eyes fall shut, as you take in the confirmation that Jake saw the same future for you three, as you had grown to not only want but need. You place a soft kiss against the center of Jake’s chest before you pull back to look into Jake’s eyes.
“I love you, and I would love that.”
“I love you, darlin’.”
The both of you find each other, lips slotting against one another, in a slow, passion-filled kiss. The loving moment is quickly broken, as you hear a high-pitched laugh, followed by a small figure colliding into your legs. Breaking away from one another, you both look down between the two of you and find Mathew. Looking back at the two of you, before a wide smile spreads across his face and he’s grabbing one of each of your legs and hugging.
“Did you make Mickey, daddy?”
Both you and Jake share a look, before he is reaching down and settling Mathew in between the two of you.
“I was just about to, but momma here was distracting me.”
Both Maty and Jake look to you, waiting for an explanation. The smirk Jake gives you, has you given him an ‘oh really' look. You quickly grab Mathew from Jake’s arms and rest him against your lap.
“Daddy just couldn’t stop talking about, how he wanted to make you a big brother.”
You give Jake an identical smirk back hoping to see him backpedal, though your tactic falls completely as a wide smile forms on his face. Before he’s grabbing Maty back from you and moves out of the kitchen.
“Momma you finish making Pancakes, Maty and I have some terms to go over for the new baby!”
The pair are leaving the kitchen before you can utter another word, leaving you baffled at how quickly the tables turned. Though as you start on the Mickey Mouse pancake, you can stop the smile that forms on your face and the flutter of butterflies that erupt in your stomach, at the thought of having a baby with Jake.
