Morbius: Bond of Blood
Tumblr media
Just a fan logo I did for a Morbius sequel with Jared Leto, Adria Arjona, Tyrese Gibson, and (maybe) Michael Keaton in the near future.
For the record, I actually liked the movie, flaws and all, and I think with its recent success on Netflix, this could actually happen soon. I got the name for it from the 2021 storyline where he deals with the consequences of his first kill as a vampire. Would work pretty well as inspiration to pull from for the possible sequel.
And yes, since I do like the film, do me a favor and don’t come at me with any memes, all right?
Anyway, hope you like it!

Can I request a Morbius x Reader where the reader is Morbius’s girlfriend and she is Doctor like him and she accidentally cuts herself on a pin and she passes out from the sight of blood but Morbius notices and catches her before she hits the ground and gently places her on the ground until she wakes up (you can add the rest) thank u :)
Haven't written for him in a long ass time.
Pairing: Michael Morbius x Fem!Reader
Tags: fluff, hurt/comfort, mention of blood, passing out, kissing, cuddles, late night lab hours, worried Michael Morbius
A/N: I honestly want a second movie just for the memes.
Tumblr media
You're not usually around when Morbius feeds because you can't handle the sight of blood that well
Helping him in the lab is sort of a bonding activity since he works long hours anyways
You on the other hand don't have that much stamina, you mostly work in the mornings so your schedules only line up if he stays in the lab all day
Seemed appropriate to try to stay up with him for a change
Because of your tired state you end up giving yourself a cut
Not only does he smell the blood, he can also hear your rapid heart beat
Morbius is by your side before you can even start to faint, his worried face being the last thing you see before your world goes dark
The scent of your blood is hard for him to resist, he's tasted it once before and it was nearly impossible for him to stop
He folds your coat and his under your head so you don't lay your head on your cold tile floor and looks over you until you wake up
Lets out a long sigh when you wake up and kisses your forehead when your eyes meet his
Not above teasing you for fainting over the sight of a little blood
As a doctor you should really get a stronger stomach
Until then he'd be happy to catch you whenever you faint and hold you against him until you stop shaking

I am asking about your spiderverse dimension 🎤
yippeeeee okay id better explain what exactly im trying to write here lmao so like. this whole au was originally just an experiment in mapping the spider-person story onto a morbius variant as a joke bc i liked the idea of him being like "i was straight up bitten by a radioactive animal and started doing vigilante crime fighting can you please let me into the multiverse" and miguel going "NO youre literally a villain How did you get this number" but then it kinda spiralled and now theres like themes n shit
so long story short morgan michaels gets bitten by a radioactive vampire bat on a uni trip and wakes up with some weird mutations but doesnt really take much notice, he just goes about his day as normally as he can until he Fucking exsanguinates someone to Death. and takes it Badly. so then while hes trying to cope with that and adjust to the whole "vampire(?) thing" like. finding a non-homicidal way to get blood. he encounters spider-man and goes Hey! You know what would make me feel less shit about that whole murder thing? Doing that!
so he pisses off to try become a superhero and accidentally gets stuck with the name morbius, fucks around w/ doc ock and almost finds out until spidey saves his ass and morbius goes Hey. Im bad at this. Youre good at this. Can i be your sidekick until i figure out what the fuck im doing? and peter goes Hhhhhmmmmm bc He knows morbius is a villain. hes wearing one of them watches hes all caught up on how his canon works. but maybe this one is different..maybe he can fix him.....as in hes literally floating there in front of him asking to be fixed. so he says Yeah okay ill make sure you dont get yourself killed probably
so theyre doing the whole superhero mentor thing for a while, morgan learns and grows amd theres some cool contrasting moments where he handles shit completely differently than spider-man would and changes the trajectory of some established arcs, until eventually hes off doing basic superhero stuff all on his own and goes Hey that guy doesnt have a pulse. Thats kinda weird. so he tracks the guy to this weird secret rave in a factory basement with all these other dead people and at one point they turn on the sprinkler and its full of human blood? which hes so normal about ofc (<- the lying liar) and then this COOL GUY with a COOL JACKET and a COOL SWORD shows up and starts annihilating everyone and morbius goes Whoa cool! and then this guy tries to kill Him and he goes HEY WAIT IM LITERALLY ALIVE and blade goes Thats fucking weird cause youre definitely a vampire so whats your deal. Come with me so i can figure out what your deal is. so then morbius meets blades cool hematologist friend and cool butch biker mom and finds out abt Actual vampires which, it turns out, he definitely isnt hes something else which just seems similar bc [INSERT COMIC-TYPICAL MUTATION BULLSHIT]
they both get tied up in plot stuff and even though it takes a loooong moment for blade to trust him theyre actually a pretty good team, morbius is used to spider-man treating him like a student and, implicitly, a child so its neat that blade treats him like an Equal (albeit an annoying inexperienced equal w/ bad jokes and a worse costume but still) and turns out they actually have a lot in common? and kinda bond really easily? and maybe this whole "edgy-hero-who-kills-things" deal is working wayyyy better for him than the spandexed paragon thing spider-man has going on and that guy is super out of his depth in these circumstances and needs to stop pushing in assuming he knows best just bc hes a """hero""" and actually hes maybe being a total uptight prick about the no murder thing and who died and made him king of new york anyway?? fuck off spider-man i have a cool new friend who Gets Me and will absolutely definitely never judge me for killing someone or succumbing to bloodlust which is definitely totally 100% true and Not a fundamental misinterpretation that will come back to bite me in the ass.

Hi can u please rant about your favorite thing about Morbius? He seems really cool but I don't know squat about where to start 👉👈
YES YES YES I WILL!
One of my favorite things about him is how he’s often the antithesis of a vampire and is a victim of circumstance.
While he is obviously a “living vampire,” he doesn’t really act like a vampire. He’s genuinely a kind man who seeks to cure himself of his condition instead of relishing in the idea of vampirism. There’s obviously the physical differences too, like him being fine in the sunlight and still being able to eat garlic (he actually mentions liking it in Morbius (2013) #1, which is just a little fun fact). While he is selfish in many scenarios, it’s never an extreme selfish action like that of your normal vampire. In fact, he’s attempted suicide on multiple occasions to both save himself and others from his bloodlust.
As for being a victim of circumstance, I think Spider-Man puts it best:
Tumblr media
(Though I’m going to be entirely real, spider-man needs to stfu about “Oh I can’t stop saving people” like there is a VERY big difference between moral obligation and biological needs)
Okay! Now that I’ve told you what I like about him, let’s get on to the recommendations.
Here’s the solo runs: Although I do think the Morbius (2013) run is flawed in some aspects, it’s probably the easiest point to jump into the character. The 1992 run and 2020 run are also essential, and Morbius: Bond of Blood (2021) are gonna be some key points to go over, too.
As for Morbius stories in other books, Marvel Zombies 4 (2010) and Amazing Spider-Man (1999) #622, #679.1, #699.1 and #688-#690 are essential. Plus his very first appearance in Amazing Spider-Man (1963) #101.
Keep in mind that these are just starting points. There’s a ton more content, but I’m not gonna tell you to jump straight into Adventure into Fear because… you’re gonna need stamina for that one… Maybe I’m just a tiny tot but my brain shut down while trying to read the dated language.
Anyways, have fun reading!

What I really appreciate about some Marvel phone games, and have never seen in a DC game, is the understanding that Aesthetics are Important, and that comics fans are often Collectors.
Like, my beloved Avengers Academy game, and now Marvel Snap, are centred around collecting the cool characters I love (or tolerate), and then giving them cool clothes(/art styles).
Avengers Academy mostly dispensed with gameplay OTHER than this mechanic, and was a beautiful perfect unashamed high school AU that transformed violent crossovers into fun battle of the bands episodes, or science fairs. Marvel Snap uses metallic foil and holographic variant cards as it's leveling up mechanic, and lets you save up points for pretty artwork variants. (I'm collecting Scottie Young baby variants. I have a Morbius the Living Vampire guzzling a baby bottle of blood. Hehe!)
Also, Marvel Snap gave me a Jubilee card whose only power is calling another card from the deck to aid her. It understands the characters!
It's also unashamed of Marvel's back-catalogue. My icon is Forge! I have Swarm, a Nazi made of bees, and Zabu, a sabretooth tiger who is the pet of Marvel's Tarzan knockoff, Kazar. I have different decks centred around Magneto, Jubilee, Odin, Devil Dinosaur, and Bishop! SOME of those names are reasonably well known!
I know that all the superhero fighting games are also appealing to a type of fan, but it isn't the type I am. I memorize the names of hundreds of characters and then want to see them interacting and looking cool. Snap doesn't have the bonding I desire, but it ticks all the other boxes. It's fun.
(It's also trying to activate my ADHD addiction circuits, but I am strong. And was raised by a man who hates spending money. And understand how hollow things become if I pay to win. Not even Jubile variants will sway me!)

The Absolute Best Morbius Comic Art
So since I did that post on my least favorite artists that have drawn Morb I have to do the opposite and show my absolute favorites. This sadly will only include comic art which means three of my favorite artists will be excluded as they’d only done covers but I doubt you all want to hear me gush over Kyle Hotz, Ryan Brown, and Ivan Shavrin, for hours with like one or two jpegs to show you. Also not included are my mutuals because Oh My LORD is some of the fanart on Tumblr fantastic! Nope, have to stick to official comic art only. Maybe later I’ll do a post of my favorite standalone pieces of comic art but I would feel weird reposting fanart (even with links and credits of course) Also this was SO hard to put into an order. I wracked myself over the numbering. I’m still leaning towards going back and changing it I love these artists so much!
Tumblr media
10: Larry Lieber. I absolutely fell in love with the way he’s drawn in the newspaper strips and while the artist for the Sunday strips is also amazing it was Larry Lieber’s art that really got me. It looks vintage but is pretty damn new (2011), has great lines, perfect face, emotion I just *Chef’s kiss*
Tumblr media
9: Max Douglas. Remember that I said one of my fave Morb short stories in both art and content was in Morbius #25? It’s this story: Drainage System of which Max Douglas did the art. It’s gritty but clear, the backgrounds are full of details. The art carries the exact mood of the story and I have been rereading it fondly since 1994. The main story of this issue is.... ehhhhhhh but it is worth picking up just for Drainage System.
Tumblr media
8: Marcelo Ferreira. Artist for most of the 2019 series and an absolute talent! His work is gritty and makes Morb ugly in the best most apropos way. Love his heavy use of thick block shadows to define form, and he’s a genius when it comes to fabric folds and hair. This is one of two artists on this list I own a piece from (A page of the 2019 series issue 5) and I wish I could have gotten more.
Tumblr media
7: Ron Wagner. Needless to say his art absolutely made the 1990′s series (up until he split due to conflict with the writer) and it was one of the big reasons I initially picked up the comic. If Marvel had picked another artist i don’t know if nine-year old me would have put that book in my arms and marched to the register. I do own a piece from him too. A page of the 90′s series, Human Morb getting mugged because that page was one of my favorites. Hoping to see him at a con one day so I can bring it to him.
Tumblr media
6: Tom Reilly: Artist of the 2021 issue Bond of Blood. Retro style again, very much inspired by Gil Kane’s original work and I love it. This is a pure winner of a comic with so much drama in it and they found the perfect artist. Morb is all lean lines here which is my preferred frame for him, large red eyes, stark detail. It’s just a visual treat!
Tumblr media
5: Tony Moore. Oh Tony Moore of the Punisher Frankencastle arc how I love your art, let me count the ways! 1. Amazing details in every inch, 2. Crazy crammed backgrounds, 3. Perfect facial expressions, 4. Style that harkens back to old school horror, 5. fluid motion, amazing lighting details, 6. The hatching! The shading! I have to stop or I could gush forever.
Tumblr media
4: Guiseppe Camuncoli of the ASM No Turning Back arc. This man. This man right here! Everyone he draws. EVERYONE is a visual feast. He cuts back on the shading I normally crave but makes up for it in starkly contrasted linework with full detail. The way he draws Morb’s eyes is so unique but it works! The facial lines, the fabric folds, and the facial expressions are so perfect!
Tumblr media
3: Gil Kane. I know, making him #3 when he invented the aesthetics of the character is me being harsh. It’s just that there are two artists I love so very much in style just for my tastes. Still Gil Kane is arguably the basis for all good Morb art and his splash pages are so amazing that I own three wearing copies of that T-shirt with one on it. I wear them to work. I have no shame in my love for Morbius or for Gil Kane.
Tumblr media
2: Kev Walker, the artist for Marvel Zombies 4. This was a hard decision but I love his style on Morbius so much. The glowing eyes, the formation of his cheekbones. His claws, teeth, expressions they are just perfect to me. He’s a bit buff in this series but I chalked that up to ARMOR actually feeding him regularly instead of him skipping meals. This entire four part story is great, and it’s worth it on art alone even if zombies aren’t your jam.
Tumblr media
1: Without a doubt in my mind ‘Slammin’ Sonny Trinidad. A Filipino artist who worked for Marvel in the 70′s he often inked others work but he penciled my favorite comic of all time and in my opinion he did it better than anyone could have hoped to. This is my favorite Morbius, with Kane’s eye style but soft pencil detail, hatched shading, and so much emotion in every single panel you see him in. This beats out every dead stare sarcastic tone rendition of Morbius I have ever seen. Celso ‘Sonny’ Trinidad passed in 2009 and will forever be missed.

yell abt Morbius pls i have pretty much no clue what is going on with that besides the failed 2nd release and i am eager to know
(also sorry abt the unfollow/refollow was tryna send this and i misclicked)
what you need to know about morbuis:
there is morbuis, who injects himself with bat blood, but inadvertently becomes a vampire
one of the guys who played dr who recently is in it, and he becomes a vampire on purpose
martine (the love interest?) is there, I have very little idea what purpose she served, the actress playing her was bad at acting, and she almost died, but then she got morbed, so she didn't die
the vampires have to drink blood in order to not go crazy, I think, and the fake blood can sate the hunger, but not for long, this part was confusing
actually, the whole movie was confusing
the frusturating part: in a post credits scene, vulture, from spider-man: homecoming, showed up he talks with morbuis, but how did the vulture even get there? people who knew peter parker was spider-man (he did) went to main mcu, so how did he get out? and to a world with no spider-man, no less. and why didn't he go back? and I know they're teasing sinister six, but morbuis isn't a super common spider-man villian. if morbuis-verse sinister six does happen, the only thing that might justify it is a batman/joker joke. that's it.
tl;dr: morbuis was a bad movie, and the only reason to go see it was bonding over laughing at a hilariously bad movie with your friends, that part was worth it

chapter 1 / ?
Renesmee POV
“You’re literal dogwater! You’re trash! Get good! I hate you, trash teammate! KYS (Kill yourself)!” Renesmee spoke into the microphone, gently and quietly, as not to let her parents find out her darkest secret that not even the ones she loved could ever hear about.
She indulged in video games— Fortnite, to be exact. It was the only thing that could heal her numb emotions, and fill the hole in her heart Jacob left when her father so cruelly cast him away. With a restraining order, of course. But, there was yet another secret she was keeping. Every night, she departed from her sleeping quarters, and waited for her beloved to visit her in the darkest hours of the night. It seemed he was approaching, and she would soon see her forbidden lover. She could hear him, now, he was outside the window, and he howled with passion. Every howl screamed her name, “Renesmee, Renesmee, Renesmee…” she imagined him saying, away from the watchful eye of Edward.
The window slid open, to reveal a muscular man with luscious, long locks of silky, black hair. His brown eyes looked only at Renesmee, and his heart beat only for her. “Jacob,” she said, returning his intense gaze. “Renesmee,” he replied, inviting himself into her room, careful not to make a sound. Renesmee had an idea, a rebellious, scandalous, idea. She longed to run away from her parents, and spend the rest of eternal life with the wolf-man of her dreams. So, she needed to make a choice, her parents or her love? There was only one true answer. The answer her parents had chosen to create this family- love. “Jacob, I have an idea… but it’s risky and requires full cooperation.” she spoke concisely and with determination, her eyes piercing through his lovestruck soul. Jacob did not hesitate for a moment. “Anything for you, loca.” and so, she proposed her idea, with only Jacob in her mind and heart. “Will you… run away w-w-w-w-with me?” Jacob listened to her words carefully. The answer was obvious. “Always, Renesmee.”
And so, they were off together, into the harsh night, the only shield they had being the love for one another.
Dr. Micheal Morbius POV
Tumblr media
Micheal’s eyes fluttered open, laying on the cold lab table. He couldn’t remember a thing. All his thoughts were blurry, and his body ached everywhere- hunger, pain, sadness, it all consumed him. He wasn’t sure why. He turned to his side, the debris-like bats fluttering around in circles in their large test tube like enclosure. They called to him, almost as if they were one of his kind. One of the living vampires. His lab was located in a desolate forest, not far from the Swan-Cullen residences. He felt the uncontrollable vampire rage inside of him, and he knew he could not do anything to prevent the monster about to break free. Near the door of his lab, he could hear rapid footsteps, approaching it. He wanted to cry out, “No! Run while you still can!” but all he could do was growl, scream, wretch— out in pain. He tried to tie himself down, but he knew the monster inside would not be subdued, it was much too late for that.
The smell of blood was enticing, it was exciting, it was all he could think about. It was so strong, he could smell it wafting through the lab door, which was slowly opening. The air, though, was odd, something was running through it, and something extremely fast. Micheal felt fear, but yet, all he could think about was the incoming meal. That meal being Jacob and Renesmee. Micheal tried with all his might to stop himself, but he could not, and a loud roar echoed throughout the lab. Before he knew it, he was latched onto the ceiling, hanging from the top of it, awaiting his prey. It was, in fact, morbin time.
“Renesmee, stay close to me…” Jacob said, trying to navigate through the bat-filled lab. In her defiance, Renesmee crept in front of the half-wolf half-man, but she never would've guessed what she would see. The room was silent for a moment, the only noise being the creeping from the ceiling, and the rapidly fluttering wings of the bats. “Renesmee, get back here…” said Jacob, anticipating the horror in front of the two of them. Then, he heard it, a claw cutting through metal, and pain-filled gasps and groans. Renesmee, horrified, looked up to meet the cold, dead eyes of the monster awaiting them, it's disgusting, mangled mouth hung open. Then, it uttered a few words that left Renesmee’s blood cold. “I do not control the morb. The morb controls me.”
Micheal leapt from the ceiling, and his claws met Renesmee’s side. She let out a blood-curdling scream, as Micheal immediately dashed to her bloody side. Jacob was not going to let anyone, not even this monster, hurt her. And soon, the man shifted into a wolf with fur black as night. He howled, although Micheal was unphased, his red eyes did not even break contact with Renesmee’s gash. Seeing Micheal drain the blood from her body, Jacob was reminded of his long-time enemy, the Swan-Cullens. Jacob pounced on Micheal… no, Morbius… and before he could even try to kill the monster, Morbius struck him too, leaving his voluptuous tail on the ground, severed.
But they weren’t alone in this fight. Two familiar faces had heard their screams. “Get away from my daughter!” yelled Edward. “Y—yeah. Just, um… stay–stay away? I… I don’t know, stop— hurting her,” Bella agreed, displaying her sharp vampiric teeth. Morbius cried out, but they couldn’t tell what he was saying. He seemed to be trying to stop himself from hurting Renesmee and Jacob, but he couldn’t. Edward’s heart ached with empathy, he would know more than anyone what being unable to control the monster inside of you was like. Finally, Morbius pulled himself away from Renesmee, and while Edward felt anger at him for injuring his daughter, he also felt bad for Morbius. “Run… while you still… can…” Morbius muttered, trying to hold himself back. What Edward said in reply made his heart skip a beat.
“I would never abandon another vampire.”
“What?”
“I would know more than anyone what your pain feels like.”
“Run…” Morbius said in a final, desperate attempt to save Edward.
“I won’t let you kill anyone. And I won’t let you suffer alone, either.”
Edward held Morbius’ hands behind his back, but didn’t make any attempts to harm him. Morbius, or now, as he felt his humanity returning, Micheal, had never felt such warmness in his life. Edward didn’t need to say a thing. Michael didn’t need to say anything, either. Then, they heard a voice.
“What are you doing, queers?!” yelled Bella in a cold, uncaring voice Edward had never seen before.
And hearing her like this, and having Morbius ever so close, he knew… who he really loved.

Film Review - Morbius
Continuing our look in cinematic offerings from 2022, let’s head over to Sony’s Marvel efforts and take a look at the apparently infamous Morbius…
Plot (as adapted from Wikipedia):
At a hospital in Greece, 10-year-old Michael Morbius meets new fellow patient Lucien, whom he renames Milo; they bond over their shared blood illness and desire to be "normal", becoming honourary brothers. Seeing Michael's potential after he repairs Milo’s faulty medical equipment on the fly, their surrogate father figure and hospital director Nicholas arranges for Michael to attend medical school in New York while he focuses on caring for Milo.
25 years later, Michael publicly declines a Nobel Prize for his work with artificial blood. His colleague Martine Bancroft discovers he has secretly captured dozens of vampire bats from Costa Rica in the hope of splicing their genes with his own to cure his condition. Michael receives funding from Milo to outfit a private mercenary vessel in international waters with his equipment. While the cure works, it transforms Michael into a vampire-like being who kills and drains the crew of their blood after they attack him out of fear. Once his bloodlust subsides and he regains his senses, a horrified Michael erases all CCTV footage of his experiment before contacting authorities and jumping overboard.
Michael returns to New York and discovers he now has superhuman strength, speed, and echolocation, with his vampire bats treating him as one of their own. To control his bloodlust, he subsists on his artificial blood, but it gradually ceases to satisfy his needs. FBI agents Simon Stroud and Al Rodriguez investigate Michael's victims and deduce his involvement. Milo learns that Michael is cured but becomes furious when Michael refuses to cure him as well. While checking on a hospitalized Martine, Michael finds a dead nurse, drained of her blood. Believing he was responsible, he attempts to escape before being arrested by Stroud. In prison, he is visited by Milo and realizes Milo took his cure and killed the nurse. Michael escapes to confront him. An unrepentant Milo urges Michael to embrace his powers as he has. Unwilling to hurt his brother, Michael flees.
Michael meets Martine, acquires a new lab, and develops an antibody against vampirism to stop Milo; he also plans to use it on himself. Stroud and Rodriguez find footage of one of Milo's attacks and, believing Michael's vampirism to be spreading, release it to the media. Nicholas recognizes Milo and pleads with him to stop. Angered by Nicholas' perceived preference for Michael, Milo mortally wounds him; Michael arrives too late to save him while Milo also mortally wounds Martine. Martine dies in Michael's arms, forcing him to drink her blood. Michael summons an army of bats to restrain Milo and inject the antibody. Milo dies and Michael flies off with the bats, mourning his loved ones and embracing his identity as a vampire. Unbeknownst to him, Martine is resurrected as a red-eyed vampire, having ingested a drop of Michael's blood as he fed on her.
In two mid-credits scenes, Adrian Toomes is transported to Michael's universe from his own. Surmising that Spider-Man is somehow responsible, Toomes approaches the fugitive Michael and suggests that they form a team.
Review:
To clarify an error from Wikipedia before we begin, there is no actual familial relationship between the lead character, the principal antagonist and their would be “father”.  We’re actually looking at two unrelated kids who bond as brothers due to being stuck in the same place with the same condition, and in the apparent absence of the children’s actual parents, their doctor becomes like a father to them.  As such, where Wikipedia names Matt Smith’s character of Lucien/Milo as being another Morbius, this is a total mis-read of the film, and clearly shows that whoever last updated that info did not pay sufficient attention to the film.
Of course, given the film’s critical and commercial failings and frequent spoofing on social media via memes, this is somewhat understandable, yet is the film necessarily as bad as some people proclaim?  Beyond the comic book purists and comic-ignorant film critics that will often decry any film adaptation of a super-being’s adventures, Sony’s efforts to create films about Spider-Man-related characters set apart from the web-slinger has been treated with disdain from day 1.  As a result, the Venom films and now Morbius have had to fight an uphill battle against closed minds in a way other comic-based films haven’t.  As such, if we’re to give this film a fair appraisal, let’s look into this with some objectivity and see if the film is really as bad as many seem to think.
First of all, does the character of Morbius necessarily need his origins to be told via a Spider-Man film.  Having read the original comics in which he appeared, I would actually say no, because in those comics, Morbius appears already turned into a pseudo-vampire and his origins are related via back-story.  As such, it’s quite logical to choose to make a film that shows that back-story for its main plot and not involve any iteration of Spider-Man at all.  The second question is does the film do a good job adapting Morbius’ origins?  Up to a point, the answer is yes, but only up to a point.  Changes are made in order to facilitate the story being a film in its own right, which is ok, but less ok is that the film Americanises Morbius, a problem we’ve previously seen with characters in Fox’s X-Men films.
In the comics, Morbius is a born-and-raised Greek, yet no effort is made by Jared Leto or the child actor playing Morbius’ child-self to use a Greek accent.  With Matt Smith’s character of Milo, we’re dealing with an amalgamation of other characters to create someone new, so his English accent is less of an issue, but still inconsistent to a childhood apparently spent growing up in Greece.  Dr Nicholas is an older version of the role from the comics that Milo fulfils, and again we get a British accent where we should be getting Greek.  As a result, the characters are westernised for no good reason beyond the film makers wanting some fairly major actor names on the marquis and being too cheap to spring for accent coaches.
So, right out of the gate, the film is questionable in terms of accuracy to the source material beyond necessary changes to make a film from this story, and to the detriment of diversity and representation within the superhero film genre.  This is compensated for by decent acting in various areas, and the plot is ok, but it has holes.  Why does FBI Agent Stroud refer to New York as “my city” when he’s part of a national organisation and not a city-based law enforcement body?  This only makes sense if he’s NYPD, not FBI.  Why does Morbius never use the second dose of the anti-vampire poison after he kills Milo?  Did he lose the second dose in the battle?  Why is Milo’s character even necessary, given that he’s apparently been created just to give Morbius a “villain” to clash with?
To my mind, the film would have been better served by keeping to the original story from the comics more and then not falling victim to what have become standard superhero film tropes, especially under Sony’s stewardship of the Spider-Man film rights.  We don’t need everyone to know who the protagonist is, they don’t always have to have a romance arc, and they don’t always have to have a villain.  Morbius having to fight the vampire-like self he develops, trying to cure that, that would have been a better plot-line to follow.
One of the big issues with superhero films at present is that they are becoming formulaic through complacency and lazy writing.  Morbius could have been used to change this by giving us something truly different in the genre, by having the lead character having to fight themselves instead of an external antagonist.  Instead, the film resorts to clichés of the genre, much to its detriment.  That being said, it at least helps to highlight and represent people with blood disorders, and that’s something we don’t see much in a lot of films or TV shows except to pity them and pigeon-hole them as incapable.  Morbius, if it had been better worked out, could have been very good at de-stereotyping this area of the disabled community.  As it is, it doesn’t land too well.
Speaking of landing, the film does have another feather in its cap by way of world-building.  We have references back to the Venom films, and the mid-credit scenes bring in Michael Keaton’s Vulture for some mid-credit scenes to develop the eventual idea of a Sinister Six film.  This is something Sony tried to do via the Amazing Spider-Man films without success, and they’re not improved by much at this stage.  The scenes could have been longer and better developed to ensure they landed better, but as it is, the scenes are overly simple and unsubtle, and nowhere near the standard established by Samuel L. Jackson and Robert Downey Jr. from the end of the first Iron Man film.
In summation, Morbius isn’t quite as bad as some may think, but it certainly has negative aspects, not least of which being the fact that anti-superhero filmmaker Martin Scorcese actually praised Matt Smith’s little dance scene as Milo.  When someone who doesn’t get superhero film-making and acts from intellectual snobbery is praising one of the dafter parts of the film, that’s a pretty big clue that you’ve made a bit of a mis-step.  I only hope that when Sony get around to bringing their Sinister Six together, they learn from their mistakes and improve things.  As it is, I give this film 6 out of 10, and I’m probably being generous with such a score.
