I think Terry is such an interesting character for the way he shows us how easily good morals can be evil without being compromised and the distinction between evil and cruelty.

He has very clear moral lines and sticks to them throughout the show. His belief is always that one must do everything to help those they care about. While many of us might object to the way these morals play out for him, specifically with being willing to use dark magic as an elf and being willing to kill Ibis (even if he feels horrible about it), the fact of the matter is those aren't moral lines very different from much of our main cast (especially Callum). And this is so important for setting up many of the hard choices the main characters will have to face in the next few seasons by showing us someone who can be so kind and loving and help plants grow can also be violent and dangerous without questioning the morality of their choices.

And it is also interesting because of what it means when he calls Claudia out for being cruel in taunting Rayla about the coins. Because Terry is an antagonist in the show, he manages to be "okay" with killing someone and yet he objects to Claudia taunting Rayla, a much more insignificant way of hurting someone. And that is because of Terry the question is not about if you are hurting someone but if you are helping someone else by doing so. Evil is when you hurt someone in order to achieve your aims. Cruelty is when you hurt someone for no reason.

I'm interested in your views on Sonic as a character. Which games or other media stay true to his core character?

Sonic is cool :)

And I don't mean just cool in a "totally radical" way, or in a "look how awesome his feats are!" way. It's just... he's a friend. He's supportive and optimistic and a full believe in the Superpower of Teamwork™, cocky yet polite, helping others because that's just what he wants to do. Sonic has no moral code, he doesn't operate on hero logic: he does good because he wants to do good, it ain't that deep fam. This is why IDW's portrayal of his as someone who has strong principles about freedom is just OOC - it's not a principle! It's not something that holds him back! He will kick your ass and imprison you in a lamp for all eternity if you proved yourself to be unredeemable! But then you contrast this with how he rejects Tikal's plan of sealing Chaos in the Master Emerald again because that won't make its anger vanish. giving him a super lobotomy to calm it down worked, though

Secret Rings, Black Knight and Unleashed have probably my favorite portrayal of Sonic. The first one shows well his friendship with Shahra, how he put himself in harm's way for her as soon as he met her and got cursed on her behalf, how he could empathize with her and her ambiguous history with Erazor Djinn and didn't hold it against her for not being able to let go of him; the second one is nearly unanimously considered to be the best Sonic of all time, because it actually shows the freedom and strong will of his character, how he's willing to be "the bad guy" in a story if that means doing what he thinks is right, and his surprisingly poignant views on mortality; and as for the third one, his line "Do I need a reason to help out a friend?" is just him in a nutshell :)

Also, I'm still not fond of how they relegated him to wooden secondary character in '06, but I can't deny his relationship with Elise is cute for what little we see - he meets this girl who has been forced into the role of the reserved queen since she was 7 and he teaches her how to have fun and let go of her worries! And Elise is so inspired that at one point she jumps out of Eggman's Egg Mobile to get away from him! Sonic is just this strong positive influence on other people and it's just. ugh. he's so friend shaped <3

Of all adaptations, Sonic X is the one who got the closest to capture this - not surprising, since it's the only Japanese adaptation we have so far and it was the most closely supervised by Sonic Team. It's not perfect, it has its weird moments like Sonic manipulating his friends because he really wanted to get off a boat, but he's overall nice and supportive as he should be. Episode 14 is a must watch to get Sonic.

The OVA is nice too? A bit more dated, and Sonic is just a little more prickly, but other than that I have no issue with his character - the ending is a standout.

Anyway. Sonic is the character of all time. I love my boy so much, I've loved him since 2004. I will protect him against adaptations who think he has to be an arrogant jerkass or a funny little penis man to give him "depth" and "appeal".

This Idea, This Concept, lives in my brain, haunting my every waking moment. WHAT IF. WHAT THE FUCK IF.

WHAT IF this show had paid more close attention to the continuity of Porsche's emotional arc and had given us a more conclusive ending that actually addresses all the ways in which Porsche LEADING THE MAFIA is counterintuitive to his character. You know, the man who had a minor breakdown over 'collecting the debt', an issue that's never addressed again (even if you read his character development as being a steady decline into moral ambiguity because of his growing relationship with Kinn, Porsche's attitude towards the mafia families has always been ambiguous at best and openly hostile at worst) WHAT IF Porsche had actually acknowledged the way in which his relationship and feelings for Kinn would always be tempered and limited by Kinn's devotion and sense of obligation to his family and his father? WHAT IF Porsche refused to settle for second, refused to lay down his life and dignity for Kinn for scraps in return, refused to succumb to Korn's obvious machinations?

WHAT THE FUCK IF.

I feel like the one major thing missing from Kinnporsche, for me, was the clear lines between family and Porsche that Kinn was never truly forced to draw. Yes, he went against his father's wishes by falling for Porsche and entering into a relationship with him, but he also defended his father, stood at his side and even in front of a gun for him when it mattered the most. Kinn's loyalty to his father was tapped at, niggled at, but never truly tested, not in any definitive way from which we can draw conclusions about whose side he would fall on if it ever came to it. Kinn gets to have his cake and eat it too: his family, his father's approval, AND Porsche.

What does Porsche get, though?

He gets to be manipulated, toyed with, used and controlled. He gets to have his mother back, but only because Korn needed the trump card to secure his loyalty. He gets to have Kinn, but only because Korn can better control them both by keeping them close. He gets to have power and autonomy, but only at the whims of Kinn and Korn's say so. He gets to have Chay at his side, at the cost of his little brother having lost everything, information which he never even learns about.

Porsche gains Kinn by taking the ring, but he loses everything else. So what if he had refused it?

Would he have lost Kinn?

The most interesting headcanon worth exploring to me, in this delightful little hole of woe, is Kinn being forced to choose. Porsche, or his family. Porsche, or his father. Porsche, or the mafia. I think Kinn is fucking lucky that Porsche never had any wants or expectations from him about how far his feelings for Porsche go compared to his obligations. Porsche seems very understanding and sympathetic to the position Kinn is in, which not everyone would be. Knowing that you'll always take a back seat, that you'll never truly outweigh the value of something else, is a heavy burden to carry. And for all intents and purposes, Kinn pushes that burden on Porsche. Their relationship is fraught with examples of Kinn exercising power and authority over Porsche, but never truly having to accede any to him. Even in the end, Porsche is head of the 'second' family, empowered and equalised only by Kinn's grace.

So what if Porsche said no, and made Kinn choose?

I want to see Kinn faced with losing everything he's ever known, or losing Porsche. I want to see Kinn confront the ways in which he's corrupted Porsche, made him into a man he would have hated for the sake of love, and ask himself whether it was worth it. I want to see Kinn suffer with the fact that his selfish need to have everything is going to be the thing that destroys it.

I honestly don't know how it would go down. I struggle to imagine Kinn abandoning his family or mafia ways, considering how deeply entrenched they are to his very being. I equally struggle to see how he would ever let Porsche just walk away. If Porsche doesn't accept the ring, the only thing Kinn can do is try and mitigate the fallout from Korn's machinations being uncovered, and try to convince Porsche to give him a second chance as leader. Perhaps if Kinn can facilitate a life for them away from the depths of the mafia, somewhere were Porsche can be separate to it all, maybe they could make it work. But they'd be apart practically all the time, and even when they are together, the looming threat of danger would never give them peace (Along with the hordes of bodyguards following them around).

There's no perfect solution. There's no easy answer. Either Porsche sacrifices everything, or Kinn does.

And isn't that angsty.

Hmm, none that technically fit that description that I can think of in the Silm fandom, but big shout-out to @ruiniel for periodically dropping Haleth/Caranthir on my dash (both their own fantastic works and other people's!) and reminding me I love them. They kind of exist on the periphery of my main interests (Angband, Maedhros, Nan Elmoth fam), so it's very easy for me to forget about them without outside prompting, I have the object permanence perception of a dog 🤣

A popular character you actually really like and why

Maedhros! I gather from all the various poll results I've seen, he's pretty popular 😂 His role in the narrative just renders him such a compelling character (I'm very weak for moral greyness/ambiguity, characters who commit actions that go against their own ideals, necessity/pragmatism vs. personal beliefs, characters who lean into the role fate/life has handed them even if it's the opposite of what they would have wanted for themselves, the whole wrathful and fallen angel vibe, etc.). He's also a character that is very personally relatable to me (very bad case of eldest daughter syndrome, moral code that is both incredibly strong yet extremely questionable at the same time, DepressionTM and ptsd that present in atypical ways, and strong older sibling vibes, to name a few!), so he's very near and dear to my heart.

I know everyone is heartbroken for Callum and Rayla after the ending of Through the Moon, and believe me, so am I. You said you would stay together, Rayla! But I was also heartbroken by Soren trembling as he recounted how he thought he’d killed his father and almost wishing he’d actually done it so Viren and his threat could be laid to rest.

Viren really couldn’t go without traumatizing his son even more, could he?

Well, it was really Claudia - but that’s even worse! The illusion was solid enough to be stabbed, so it could have been able to stab Ezran. Claudia wasn’t prepared to murder Ezran, was she? What would she have done if Soren hadn’t stepped in or killed the illusory Viren?

Viren’s final plan just had to traumatize both his children even more, didn’t it?

I'm confused about Caludia and Soren's hair and eyes color. Viren has light-brown hair that any of his children has. Maybe Viren's hair was blonde when he was younger? Or maybe the siblings, or at least one of them dyes their hair? Do you have any theory about that?

i haven’t super thought about that, tbh? i think part of it is genetics doesn’t work in the same way in tdp’s universe the way it does in our world (like the likelihood of harrow, callum, and ezran all having jewel-toned eye colours particularly as characters of colour w/ at least one parent with brown eyes would be super low in our universe) so i’m more lax with that stuff. (again; ezran has blue eyes despite harrow having deep green eyes and sarai having brown eyes, so, again, genetics have different rules here lmao)

another thing is we don’t know what claudia and soren’s mother looks like, so we don’t know if either of them super take after her. viren and soren actually have a pretty strong family resemblance, so i assume that claudia might physically take a lil bit more after her mum, but, again, we don’t really know? plus i think she has coloured ends so i see her already dyeing it, tbh. (plus i love the idea of her dying her hair back to black after her redemption arc)

and yeah, i could see viren’s hair changing through his youth? there’s also the subject of “his one-step skincare routine involves sucking the essence of out a butterfly every morning” and in his “true form” there are streaks of grey/white in his hair:

A Jason who gives up killing and rejoins the batfam is boring like what happened to his own moral code and doing what Batman can’t. You can’t tell me he’s had any development in the past 16 years to grow out of that. Lobdells shitty writing does not count. Jason’s issue with Bruce and the family is super complicated and it can’t be fixed with just Jason saying

“I understand why I’m wrong Bruce uwu I’m sorry please take me back I’ll stop killing daddy I’ll even forget the trauma that made me make these decisions in the first place so I can play with tea sets with the other bat kids I suddenly love and desire to be family with without knowing who they even are” and Bruce saying “it’s ok baby boy jay lad jay chum my little jay baby 🥺 I forgive you for everything you ever did to this family uwu. We don’t actually have to solve the problems bw us we can just pretend it didn’t happen”

Jason killing the worst of the worst is integral to his character. It would be great to see him make a mistake and evolve but that takes time and dc is not willing to put any behind Jason. Jason was created as this character who was meant to shake up the Batman lore to tell Batman he’s not always right and now Jason’s just rolling over and following Bruce’s orders. It takes all his morally ambiguous characterization and throws it out the window

He hasn’t even been able to evolve as his own independent character out side of Batman. All of his stories have been tied to Bruce in some way and I’m tired of the arrested development for him. I want him to travel the world reach his potential make some friends. The only ones he’s had are being taken away from him just so he can stay with the batfam. What happened to the Jason from utrh who said screw Batman??? Modern Jason just consists of him crawling behind Bruce asking to be family again and giving up his ideal while Bruce gets to keep his.

Anyone who genuinely love Jason’s character can not be happy with where his character is being taken. He’s just becoming another batfam character who does what ever Bruce wants and doesn’t have his own opinions and morals just with a little attitude. Everything that was special about his character his tragic story is being washed away for some watered down version of Jason.
