Ok today we're going to review Star Wars: Lost Stars (or *Estrellas Perdidas* since i have the ESP version)
Note: Includes Spoiler Free and Spoilerfull section, you'll be warned
Tumblr media
It a really old book i decided to read cuz i had it in my house and i heard good things about it.
Spoiler Free Section:
The book is pretty good, the author already had a good number of releases earlier. It doesnt drag that much its very fluid, one or two chapters that takes place halfway across the book feel slow but its not a deal killer. For a YA novel no character feels horribly corny, at least not cornier than a regular star wars character, although they do start introducing a bunch of characters halfway that i mostly couldnt remember.
The legacy characters are used pretty solidly, they dont take all the screen but they arent sidelined entirely since they are pretty important to the story, aside from Darth Vader and Princess Leia most of them only get namedrops here and there, and those that do appear regularly arent particularly famous. You dont need to know who Mon Mothma or Admiral Piett are to enjoy the book. The romance is good enough, its not god tier but you can tell the author has experience writing and she makes it very natural, the romance itself doesnt start until halfway making it feel fluid with the character arcs.
One thing that did bother me for some reason was the cliffhanger, I thought it would be a sell for Episode 7 or some sequel to the book, but its just an open ending for a character that will never appear in another piece of media, and a very unsayisfying open ending at that.
I'm gonna give it a 7.5/10, closer to a 7 than an 8. Recommended for anyone who likes Star Wars and/or YA novels, if youre not into either you might not like it, but its not amateurish like most YA novels post hunger games, it has essence.
Ok now it's time for the spoilers:
The biggest detail that I found odd but I grew to appreciate deeply was the characters never getting over Alderaan and the Death Star's respective explosions. The EU and New Canon have both wanked Star Wars powerscaling so much we forget blowing up a planet is a big deal and this book makes the characters feel that. Having an imperial from alderaan who witnesses the event and instead of defecting doubles down on his loyalty is really interesting.
I also like the change in characteristics from the rebel and imperial main characters, SW usually portrays the empire as rows of rich white people (and a blue man or two) and the rebellion as a very diverse group of humans and aliens so making it so the loyal till the end imperial is a black woman who sees it as a way out of space detroit and the rebel who defects after the events of a New Hope a rich white guy who sees the empire more cynically is an interesting take, although this may be up to personal interpretation.
I did mention that the legacy characters are handled very gracefully, much better than those Disney+ shows could manage, but there was a chapter that did feel too fanservicy, where the imperial main character, Ciena, is the one sent to tow Darth Vader's ship after the death star blows up, it seemed too forced of a meeting between the two, seeing as Ciena ends up in Darth Vader's Star Destroyer anyways for the events of episode V and VI, besides that I didnt feel any problem with the og characters.
The alderaanian imperial, Nash, left a lot to be desired, the book employs a lot of timeskips so it can extend over all the inportant years it needs to, but Nash's character arc doesnt adapt to these, seeing him go from a cheery imperial pre episode IV to an angry loyal commander during and after episode VI isnt handled *horribly* but you dont see the progression since they dont take enough time on him to make you feel the change, I do like that he isnt made comically evil and he does love his friends even at his worst, that is appreciated humanization.
Finally, the post Return of the Jedi events are a bit rushed, you can tell Claudia Gray wasnt allowed to spill too much details on the events since this was released before The Force Awakens, but the insider look on post Endor empire is pretty good, I dont necessarilly agree with the empire surrendering one year after Endor in the new canon, but the book makes it clear that the Emperor quite literally was holding the empire together by himself via duct tape and lightning and how him and Vader dying sent everything downhill, the Battle of Jakku is a great example of it, showing the Empire just getting completely pummeled.
Any character I didnt mention by name I dont have much to say about other that they were either very good if they first appeared on the first half (The other protagonist Thane and other imperials like Jude or Kendy), or a bit forgettable if they first appearned on the second half
That's all

The Best News of Last Week - June 20, 2022
🏳️‍🌈 — Happy Pride Month! Let’s start this week with some great news coming from Tokyo.
1. Tokyo Passes Law to Recognize Same-Sex Partnerships
Tumblr media
The Tokyo metropolitan government on Wednesday adopted legislation recognizing same-sex partnerships, which will extend some rights that apply to married heterosexual couples.
It also reflects changing attitudes toward the LGBT community. A poll by the Asahi newspaper last year found that 65 percent of voters nationwide supported same-sex marriage, up from 41 percent in 2015.
Japan is the only country in the G7 largest economies not to recognize same-sex marriages.
2. Extinct ‘fantastic giant tortoise’ found alive on the Galápagos Islands
Tumblr media
Believed to be extinct for more than a century, a rare species of giant tortoise is in fact still alive.
Scientists assumed that the chelonoidis phantasticus had died out more than a century ago. The only known specimen was discovered in 1906. But in 2019, Princeton researchers discovered a lone female tortoise on the island that hinted that the species might live on. Last week, they finally proved that the two specimens are related.
3. Groundbreaking treatment for HIV/AIDS developed by research team ‘with just a single vaccine dose’
Tumblr media
People with AIDS might soon have the option to be treated with just a single vaccine dose, according to a new study from Tel Aviv University that shows the potential impact of a new and unique AIDS/HIV treatment. The peer-reviewed study was led by Dr. Adi Barzel and PhD student Alessio Nehmad.
The goal of the research team was to genetically engineer type B white blood cells inside the body of a person with AIDS. Once modified, the blood cells would be able to secrete neutralizing antibodies against the HIV virus responsible for AIDS, eradicating it from the patient’s body.
4. Rare sun bears rescued from animal traffickers get health checkup
Heartwarming footage shows how two rare bears that were poached as cubs by animal traffickers were given a thorough health checkup.

Tumblr media
Man Shot and Killed Inside Kansas City Home by Police Officer In a tragic incident late Tuesday in Olathe, Kansas, a man was found dead in a suburban home after a police officer fired at him. The victim has been identified as 33-year-old Dane Laing, who lived in Olathe. It's not yet clear if the officer's bullets hit him, according to the Kansas City Star. Sgt. John Moncayo, a spokesperson for the Olathe police, has indicated that more details about Laing's death are currently unavailable. The situation unfolded when officers were responding to a report of an assault on Tuesday afternoon. As they were talking to the person who reported the assault, Dane Laing suddenly ran past with a handgun. In the attempt to enter a neighbor's home, one of the officers fired at Laing. Moments later, Laing was found dead inside the house. The Johnson County Critical Incident Investigation Team, responsible for reviewing cases involving the use of deadly force, is now investigating the incident. Bodegas Alto Moncayo ‘Veraton’ 2017, Campo de Borja, Spain
A couple of hours from Barcelona, the Aragon region of northeast Spain is Grenache country. Known as Garnacha in Spain, the red grape thrives here, and within Aragon, Campo de Borja is one of the leading denominations of origin.
With its arid climate and relatively high altitude, Campo de Borja lies in the foothills of the Moncayo mountain range and produces some of Aragon’s most exciting Garnachas. One of them is the superb 2017 “Veraton” from Bodegas Alto Moncayo, which was established in 2002 and farms 225 acres of vineyards.
Alto Moncayo quickly established itself as one of Campo de Borja’s leading producers. Although the winery itself is young, the grapes used in its Veraton are from vines between 30 and 50 years old grown in iron-rich clay and slate soils. This “old-vine” Garnacha produces the concentrated fruit that’s a hallmark of this $32 wine. (Two other wines made by Alto Moncayo are from grapes 40 to 100 years old.)
Veraton is big yet balanced, showcasing dark berry fruit with notes of chocolate, leather, balsamic, and a touch of black licorice. The wine, which received 16 months of aging in French and American oak barrels, has a smooth tannic structure.
This is a quintessential wine to pair with all kinds of meats and stews, and will also work well with grilled vegetables seasoned with herbs and served on a bed of couscous.
With its stunningly beautiful scenery, Aragon deserves far more attention as a wine destination once we can all start traveling again. Until then, wines like Alto Moncayo’s Veraton can transport us there.

Poet & interdisciplinary artist Michelle Moncayo speaks on preserving memory, cultural integrity and embracing the unknown.
“When you’re seeking out answers you miss the space to capture the intricacies of real life and how you go about finding those answers, or even just the confusion of not being able to find the answer, I think that’s very important. A lot of what I like about poetry is that it brings up what can’t be explained and you’re kind of going around in a circle, right? Trying to get to the thing in the center and the thing in the center isn’t the most important. I think it’s your process of getting there and it shows each person’s unique way of getting there.”
Michelle Moncayo is a Dominican/Ecuadorian poet in New Jersey. Her work explores diaspora, the natural world, and mental/physical illness. She has received fellowships/residencies from Vermont Studio Center, Sundress Academy for the Arts, CantoMundo, and VONA. Her work has appeared or is forthcoming in Ninth Letter, The Acentos Review, Winter Tangerine Review, and Kweli Literary Journal. She loves a good sancocho.

Alright today we are talking about Deus Ex: Invisible War: The most controversial DX game
Tumblr media
I'll just be real, the game is notably inferior to Deus Ex 1 in a number of ways, however it is different enough to DX1 that if you didn't enjoy it you could give this one a try
First the positives: For an 2003 xbox game the physics engine is amazing. It has that overreactive Half Life 2 feel and for a game that came out a year prior on console no less that is very inpressive
The game is a lot more balanced in difficulty, in DX1 the game got easier as you progressed, you got to a point where even on the hard difficulty the enemies could not fathon to kill you. The difficulty progression here on the other hand is extremely consistent with no spikes and a constant augmentation.
For the neutral changes
The UI has been massively reworked and now there are 3 menus to work around, however you only really use 2 after the first section of the game so its not a deal breaker
The voice acting now tries more which makes some character sound better and some worse
Alex D may have a better VA but he cant compare to the unintentional personality that JC Denton's deadpan voice gave him
But most characters aside from Alex and the main faction leaders benefit from the upgrade
And now for the negatives
The main issue is the storyline, which is a massive stepback from the fluidity of DX1. Unlike in the previous game where there is one set path and the player choice is based in the methods to trek it, this game dabbles with multiple factions and critical choices shaping your adventure. Unfortunately the team was apparently not equipped to handle the change and it shows
The factions are very underdeveloped with very bland traits, compared to every non joimable faction in DX1 its almost pathetic
There are no memorable new characters introduced, every interesting character is a returning character from DX1 and even some of those feel off. Even Alex D is nothing more than a bland protagonist despite technically having more personality than JC
The sidequests are very rewarding while you are doing them but they dont offer any satisfaction when finishing them because no change to the world is visible aside from the character you helped having surviving another loading screen
That is also an issue, the loading screens are insane in this game. This game loads in map chunks like HL1 and 2, and also like DX1, but rather than freezing the screen for a load it changes to a separate loading screen, making gameplay extremely choppy
The endgame if not satisfying is at least very tense, they throw hordes of bullet sponges at you leaving you with barely any ammo, making it so you have to sneak through the deadliest elites with very little offense at your disposal. There is only a final boss in some of the paths, so you might the satisfaction to be in the resolution to the story, but that is not the case either.
There are 4 endings and technically 1 extra joke ending, and the first 4 have each a prerendered cutscene explaining what you helped change to the world. I wont spoil much but these do a poor work of explaining and leave a "that was it?" taste in one's mouth. Compared to the masterful 3 endings in DX1 they're laughable, they cant even be given the open ended ending concession as that is not the case in any of them.
Overall, a very great gameplay session interrupted by loading screens and a laughable plot. If you want the gameplay play Half Life 2, if you want a MUCH better story play Deus Ex 1.
5/10, as it is very fun on certain ocassions, a mid game that had the misfortune of following up one of the best games of all time.
