It’s really gets to me when girls say things like “ this agency is discriminating against me because I’m shot or I don’t have the right measurements” they aren’t being mean and they aren’t discriminating against you. The agencies don’t make the rules. They don’t decide what size a girl has to be to walk for Chanel or Versace. The designers make the sample outfits a certain size and if your going to wear it you have to fit into it. An agency isn’t going to sign you if they know they can’t get you bookings. There’s no such thing as just a “print model” or “editorial girl” you have to be able to do it all.They arent going to make any money if you’re not working. Sure, there are always exceptions. Cara delevigne for example, she’s only about 5'7 but she’s walked for all the big names. But that’s such a small percentage of girls that they make exceptions for. Sometimes no matter how hard you work or how much you want something it just isn’t going to happen. I hate to say it but likely if you’re under 5'7.5 you’re not going to get signed. No matter how skinny or pretty you are. Another thing is when people bash the industry for having unrealistic standards for young girls. I’ll admit you have to be quite thin to make it, but most girls who do work hard for that body they have and are actually a lot healthier than most people. MODELS DO EAT. We just don’t eat crap. We workout. Most agencies have policies about what to do if they find out a model is participating in these types of activities. Even the girls who seem curvier than others, have the same measurements. A bust no bigger that 34. Waist no bigger than 25 and hips no bigger than 35. Most girls don’t engage in unhealthy activities to get their measurements. .That’s about a size 2 in the USA and a 6 and the U.K. some girls are born with great genes and are naturally thin, don’t have to work for it. But the reality is that most girls (and guys) who get scouted have a few inches the need to lose before they get started. For the most part, girls that get signed pretty much have the body and face from the start.The modelling and fashion industry will probably always be he same. It’s not demeaning or degrading. It can actually be quite rewarding and exciting for everyone involved. So the next time you go to bash a young girl just trying to follow her dream, think before you call her anorexic or tell her her job is a joke. -b.c.
