Where did the Latin part come from? It was originally a language spoken in ancient Mediterranean counties.
As @mixedlatinxs put it once (see the essay here):
Tumblr media
☝🏽 If you're wondering how Latin came to Latin America, it was just like that.
If you're wondering why European countries — specifically Spain — had any relation with the Mediterranean languages 👇🏽

Sorry if the way I put it came out as harsh, Anon, but the way your ask was phrased was my equivalent of what you'd feel like if somebody asked you:
"Why do you North Americans speak English? You guys are not British, and the British did it first."
Think about that for the future.

@highestformofwhit: "Hiya! I’m Whitney, #Black and #White. My biggest #mixedgirlproblem is imposter syndrome. My family wasn’t close with my Black family, and I didn’t start rebuilding those relationships until my late twenties. Obviously I pass, but I feel like a lot of my identity and history was out of reach until I started talking to my aunt and uncles." 🏴🏳️🇺🇸 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Why didn't anyone remind me that September is #HispanicHeritageMonth?! Hey! I just wanted to ask you if you have any stats on mixed race (specifically white mixed) kids and abuse? I’ve been looking but either I’m not looking right or I’m just not reading/comprehending well enough. I’m a mixed race Indigenous Mexican/White and I’ve been looking for these stats for a while.
hmmmm.... go to @mixedlatinxs!

is there a word to describe when a poc is treated like an outsider in their community? like if a mixed black person is othered cause they dont look black, or an english only speaking asian is othered for not knowing a certain language, or an afrolatinx being othered cause they look black, or an x-american who assimilated basically being seen as not-x-enough? i know most of the time the person is experiencing a privilege as well (passing, usamerican) but this is definitely an -ism of some sort.
It could be a branch from internalized racism within the community. Otherwise, I don't know and can't relate! Possibly @mixedlatinxs could help or anyone else!- Jess

Is this somewhat valid? I'm a mestix and when there's art of a light skinned character and people are claiming it's whitewashing-I feel like people are claiming being light skinned is the problem- idk I just feel less of who I am because I'm mixed. Like I'm just a diluted person who would be much better as a full blood Indigenous person but I'm not. I feel like I'm not enough and I disappoint people. Please tell me what you think. I might be totally mad at nothing so tell me your perspective
I think what you’re feeling in regards to being mixed is extremely common among mixed people. I feel that way too sometimes, as if I’d much rather be monoracial than mixed because at least then I’d have a secure place in the community instead of feeling like both sides are trying to push me out. It sucks to feel like you’re not enough or to feel diluted.
The good news is that you are enough and you do not have to put up with anyone making you feel lesser than.
Now the thing about the whitewashing, I get that too. There’s this hair product I love called Cantu and for one of their videos, they had a mixed, light skinned model with 3b curls talking about the product. And people were pissed. And like you, my first reaction was “Like fuck, can mixed people be included in anything without the community getting pissed?”
BUT!
The thing is, after taking a step back and not taking it as a personal slight against mixed or lightskin people, I listened more to what others were saying. And it’s not so much that they’re like “ugh, lightskin people”, it’s more along the lines that lighter skinned people tend to become the faces of the entire group, leaving dark skinned people out and making them seem like they’re undesirable.
And if people are making claims of white washing, then it’s likely that the person was supposed to be darker and the artist decided to lighten them. It’s an insult to dark skinned people, who rarely get representation as it is. It’s like if someone drew Sombra (awesome brown Mexican character in Overwatch) as white or really light skinned, they would be taking that representation away from darker skinned Mexican girls and that’s not right.
So, sorry it’s so long. The short answer is that I get your feelings about being mixed, but I do think you might be taking the first part a little too personally when it isn’t.
Also, if you want, check out @weareallmixedup, @mixedlatinxs, and @mixedgirlrants. They are great blogs that have definitely helped me out when I felt like being mixed sucks.

I hope this is okay, I see people ask you questions all the time but sorry if this is weird... I am half Mexican, and lately I've been trying to get in touch with my heritage, because it's a beautiful one. But I'm very white passing, and I don't know if I could be qualified as a chicana or mestiza or what.. but calling myself either one makes me feel like an imposter. I just feel kind of lost, and was wondering if you had any advice on where to start or how I should proceed. Sorry if this is odd
It’s not odd at all! This is actually super common.
So white-passing or not, if you’re Mexican, you’re Mexican. I can’t tell you whether or not you’re Mesitza because I don’t know you or your family. I mean, if your family is the ambiguous brown that people tend to assume all Latinxs are, then probably, but again, I don’t know.
As for Chicana, that identity is one for Mexican-Americans (in the US as far as I know, but idk if Mexican-Canadians consider themselves Chicanx), so if that describes you and you want to use that for your identity, then by all means!
Don’t let your mixedness or white-passingness make you feel like you can’t connect with your heritage. It’s yours!
Also, if you need some sense of community to help you feel less lost, I recommend @mixedlatinxs because I’ll tell you, they have been a big help for me as a mixed latina and there’s tons of great blogs that can give you a sense of community if you need.
If you’d like more recommendations, let me know!

I'm sorry if you've been asked this a million times, but my family has been really kept away from the Mexican part of our heritage. We're part brown but we've really been molded into bland White America. Aside from learning Spanish, do you know of any sort of guide to how to reconnect with your culture?
I’m not sure how to answer that, since it’s all up to you how you get into your culture. I am not Latinx, so maybe heading over to mixedlatinxs, reclaimingthelatinatag, and/or angrylatinxsunited.

i've always been scared to consider myself latinx bc my great grandparents on my dads side are from mexico but came here and completely assimilated. my mom is white (pretty much whole family on her side french) so i'm white and latinx?? it's all v confusing
It’s really up to you on how you want to identify. I know that as a mixed person, sometimes you feel like you’re too much or one to be the other, but you can be both!
I would definitely recommend checking out @mixedlatinxs if you haven’t already.
