first steps . . .

there are places in russia that are too difficult to see on maps. for everyone else, they are too far north, they are too cold, too sparsely populated... to be of importance.

in one of these places, in a small village with a house in low conditions, alexei vasilyevich sokolov is born. he's the third child of vasily and yulia, a nice but reserved couple. his house differs from the others, because it's painted azure blue and its corroded roof is far from being repaired. it gets damaged too often to be worthwhile. is what the climatic condition of siberia costs.

his mother calls him alyosha, as do his brothers, mikha and tatiana. mikha is the oldest, twelve years old charged to the reins himself when alexei is four years old. tatiana is ten, but her maturity indicates a much older age. it's what it takes to live in a large family, with more children than can be fed.

but alexei doesn't know much about it. only that there are two meals maximum a day, his rations and those of tatiana are the largest, and their mother tends to leave them half of her plate with a decayed smile.

to leningrad . . .

alexei is twelve when his mother dies, and suddenly every tower in his life falls.

his siblings are of age, and his father can't keep everyone afloat in the slums they already live. so he takes young alexei from vladivostok to leningrad, and leaves him at the care of an old friend of his. he owes his father favors, or so he hears, and suddenly he's allowed education, a roof over his head and food if he cleans the house and helps the man with his work.

nikolai introduces him to the future solace of his life —and the greatest catalyst for every sorrow to come: science.

the middle . . .

his success secures him a place as a scientist for the ussr, a pivotal role several men in his profession took since the start of the cold war. he hasn't seen his siblings, nor his father, and his caretaker and mentor is dead by the time alexei has turned twenty-two.

his work takes every single part of his life, drains him from having friends, a family, something akin to normalcy. he has a better economical position, yet the war keeps them from accessing to most capitalist privileges. he sometimes rents on the low american cartoons, and that's how he keeps himself secretly entertained in his secluded and lonely life.

the end . . .

he got himself almost killed for chasing the american dream. how ironic.

yet, he didn't. grigori made sure of that. his fellow comrades took his wounded body, and when he opened his eyes, alexei found himself back in mother russia, deemed as a traitor and sentenced as such. torture would follow suit, iron grip on every day of his life.

however, his intellect still deemed him worthy of staying sane and alive. he was kept as a prisoner, of course, yet he was forced to work and stayed safe due to those conditions. as a whole, his life was conditioned, and it stayed that way until he found his opportunity.

explanation of what has drawn them/why they are heading to kilgate:

his team was transferred to the city after suspicious activity that needed to be investigated. however, he sabotaged the helicopter, leaving him stranded and hurt in american soil yet completely free —if they don't find him first.

Chapter 5.5 - 5.6

“Is this your grandson, dear Gloria?” She was tall, I noticed. Taller than grandma and she looked down at me with vile interest. “Look at his eyes. His nose. He looks very much like his mother.”

“Of course he is. He is my daughter’s child.” Lola said.

“Do you draw, hijo? Do you spend all your time cooped up in your room?” She was smiling. No, she was taunting. I felt it. I felt the chill of her questions jab at me. “Did you keep all your mother’s paintings, Gloria? So he too could be inspired by the work of her mother. And look where she is, disappearing again after you’ve boasted about her?”

This woman was saying bright things to wrap the meanness in them. I felt awful about myself as she kept asking guessing what I’d been doing. She was slimy and smelled putrid than all the lifeless rotting fish discarded on the shore. I felt smaller than I was and wanted to sink into myself and hide in my own chest. Suddenly, I was standing behind Lola and I thought my grandmother was a stable shed against the awful wind.

That delighted her even more. “Aw, how adorable. Look at him hide, the shy thing.”

Lola patted me on the shoulder. I didn’t see her face when she suddenly said, out of the blue, “Mikha is a quiet one, it’s true. But I’d rather have a grandchild who doesn’t give me worries than a nephew who drinks and screams in the middle of the night. Tell me, how is darling Arturo? Isn’t he supposed to be out by now after doing his penance in the barangay hall after causing such a scandal?” Lola, too, knew how to hide venom underneath a pleasant smile. “I imagine his name would stink up the neighborhood for weeks if not months.”

That shut the woman up. My lola then took me away, the day ruined, and stormed off, huffing. The anger we shared silenced us. I asked her why she did that, and how she thought it was all right to do that. And then I saw all the faces of all my classmates. All the ones who slapped the label ALIEN on my forehead. 

“Some people don’t grow up as they grow old. And some people just don’t know how stupid they are.” Lola was massaging her temples. “I should have controlled my mouth. That was uncalled for.”

“She was stupid and rude,” I said as I grabbed her arm.

“We must be better. We shouldn’t stoop down to their level. I only said what I said because…” she looked at me, then looked away. “It would be fine if it only happened to me. I couldn’t bear seeing you about to cry.”

Was I? I carried whatever we bought back home in silence, holding my grandmother’s arm, and stood close to her, this woman who could shout at the nasty wind.

Later that afternoon, Lola didn’t clean. She told me to go outside and watch the goats and hens for a while. The house was quiet as the sun turned yellow, then red. When I returned at dusk, I couldn’t find her in the kitchens and in her room. I stared at the locked wooden door. I crept up slowly to that door and I thought she was moving boxes and arranging stuff like she said she’d do. But in the silence, I thought I heard her voice hitch, like how one cries through a pillow.

I hated people who found joy in the suffering of others. I hated how they would torment them to get a reaction, like prodding a wounded, cornered stray.

INGREDIENTS

2 Chinese eggplants cut into 2-inch slices

▢ ½ teaspoon salt

▢ 1 block extra-firm tofu pat dry & cut into 1-inch cubes

▢ 2 tablespoons cornstarch divided in half

▢ 2 shallots finely diced

▢ 5 garlic cloves minced

▢ 1 teaspoon ginger grated

▢ 1 Thai chili thinly sliced, optional if you want it spicy

▢ 1 teaspoon toasted sesame seeds optional for garnish

▢ 1 green onion thinly sliced, optional for garnish

Sauce

▢ 3 tablespoons oyster sauce

▢ 1 tablespoon soy sauce

▢ ¼ cup vegetable stock*

▢ ½ tablespoon rice vinegar

▢ 1 teaspoon sesame oil

INSTRUCTIONS

Prep Ingredients

In a large bowl or container, place sliced eggplant and fill with water just enough to cover them. Sprinkle in salt, stir, and let sit in the fridge for 15 minutes. You can use weight, such as a plate or lid, to ensure the eggplant stays submerged.

Meanwhile, in a small bowl, mix together the sauce ingredients. Set aside.

Pat dry the cubed tofu to remove as much moisture as possible, then toss tofu in 1 tablespoon of cornstarch.

Cook the Tofu & Eggplant

Heat a large skillet on medium-high heat, then add about a tablespoon of oil. Sear tofu in the pan until golden and crispy. Work in batches if needed to prevent overcrowding, otherwise, your tofu won't become crispy. Transfer cooked tofu onto a paper-towel lined plate. Keep the pan on medium-high heat to cook eggplant.

Drain eggplants and pat dry. Toss the eggplant in 1 tablespoon of cornstarch and coat thoroughly. 

Add about another tablespoon of oil to the pan then sear the eggplant until it has a nice char on the flesh sides. Work in batches if needed to prevent overcrowding. Remove eggplant and set aside.

Combine Together

Add a little more oil to the pan and reduce the heat to medium. Add in shallots and cook until lightly golden, about 3 minutes. Add in garlic, ginger, and chilies, then cook until soft and fragrant. 

Add the eggplant and tofu back to the pan. Saute them with the aromatics for about a minute, then pour in the sauce. Mix well, turn off the heat, and top with sesame seeds and green onions, if desired. Serve on the side of rice or cauliflower rice. Enjoy!

There, somewhere along the shore and the start of deeper sea, was Mikhail Hallverd... getting knocked over and over again by strong waves. Zion had a concerned frown on his face, worrying about the young Hallverd for a moment. Then, he hear done of the boy's waterfilled yells. A loud snort broke his concern into a fit of giggles.

When laughter died down, someone made a new comment about Mikha's incompetence and the fit was a go once more. Next moment, when they wanted to refresh the image of the wild boy getting decimated by the ocean, they were met with a new sight.
