Stonington board members boycott meetings to scrap $1.8 million marketing plan

The Chapel Street Association paid WTFN $40,000 to use Bondi Fit Dr. Kate Adams promoted the retail sector as friendly to dogs, and paid celebrity gardener Jamie Dorey $70,000 for promotional videos, including one on sustainable shopping.

The Glenferry Road Malvern Business Association spent $75,000 on a Malvern Keeper gift card scheme, giving local businesses $100 coupons to spend at other local stores.
But Deloitte said the scheme was “not optimally fit for purpose”. A spokeswoman for the association declined to comment.
The reports were discussed at a secret council meeting on September 26, and Stonington Mayor Jamie Klesaris and council member Polly Morgan, Melina Sir and Matthew Koch voted to scrap the plan before replacing it.

But the decision cannot be ended, because council members Marcia Griffin, Alex Lowe, Kate Healy and Nikki Patagon boycotted four private meetings on the issue. They want to modify the current scheme.
Private meetings had to be abandoned as a quorum could not be reached due to the absence of the four council members.
Counsellor Mike Scott has apologized for the conflict of interest himself. Regular board meetings were not affected. Last Monday, council members attended a 6 p.m. briefing but left before the 7 p.m. private meeting.
Local Government Minister Melissa Horne met Stonington Council this week and will have further meetings on the counties, as it may be in breach of local government law that requires councils to carry out their duties.
A government spokesperson said: “We have been made aware of the conduct issues involving council members in the city of Stonington and are currently working with council leadership to determine if further action is needed.”
The unrest comes ahead of next month’s mayoral election, and Stonnington CEO Jackie Werrell’s resignation to take over as CEO of Great Dandenong Council.
Chancellor Griffin criticized the high cost of reporting and the lack of transparency in the process.
“We don’t believe in ending something without a sustainable alternative, without giving time for the dealers to come together to respond and without being completely transparent,” Griffin said.
Klesaris said she was “disappointed that four elected members seemed to seek to thwart this process and avoid this responsibility.”
“It is a strong matter of principle to me, and should be a concern for any board member seeking to uphold the highest levels of governance and accountability in line with community expectations,” she said.
Another special board meeting is scheduled for Monday, but Liu is on vacation and Griffin is committed to attending an annual general meeting.
