Tonight's breakdown will be covering two characters at once! I was originally going to do just Daisy, and then I realized I didn't really have anything to say about her as far as references or inspirations go. So, I decided to group her with Rosalina, and get the rest of the Mario princesses (that I've done) out of the way! Keep in mind Rosalina's gonna have more about her though.
So to start with Daisy, her outfit is the same as Peach, being a skin-tight suit allowing for a lot more flexibility than a poofy dress would. While Peach has a heart pattern on her suit though, Daisy has an odd white pattern on her legs. Daisy fans might recognize this as the pattern her dress used to have in the classic games, and they'd be right! I thought it would be a nice touch and help set her apart from Peach design-wise. As far as other references go, her Flower Power attack was directly based on her star swing in Mario Super Sluggers, only instead of walling opponents out with a garden of flowers, she traps them inside one!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Overall, I'm pretty happy with Daisy. I mentioned when I talked about Peach that I was pretty nervous about drawing the Mario girls back in the day, and I think Daisy fared the best here. I like her jumping to spike the ball, really fits with her competitive edge. I think the expression she's making looks great too.
Now for Rosalina, who I have a lot more to say about. I made her for Mar10 day last year, so I wanted to make her inclusion special. What I ended up doing was pairing her up with a cream-colored Luma - the first one she met and sent her to space in the first place! I thought that would be a really cute touch.
Also means she gets to have a Luma play beside her like in Mario Kart Wii! I have had clinical depression ever since that was removed in MK7. Bring Luma Back You Cowards!!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Unlike Daisy, Rosalina's outfit is pretty different from Peach. The top is similar, but she has a flowing dress at the bottom with white leggings. I wanted to match how Rosalina often has a slightly different outfit to Peach and Daisy in games like Mario Golf and Mario Tennis. To that end, I think the design I gave her works well!
Tumblr media
And then there's Rosalina's attacks. Black Hole is obviously based on the black holes Mario could get sucked in in the Galaxy games, although the art makes it look less menacing. She's probably holding back their true power so they don't actually disintegrate the competitors. And finally her Super Spike, which is based on the ending in Galaxy 1 where the Comet Observatory rockets Mario to the center of the universe! It's just as strong and powerful, so you can imagine how fast the ball would go if a literal comet smashed into it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I mostly like how Rosalina turned out, although I will say I'm not super satisfied with how I drew her. I feel the posing is a bit too stiff, and I could have made it look more lively. I really should draw her and the other princesses more to get a better feel for them. Maybe sometime soon I'll redraw her, I think I've gotten a lot more confident over the past few years doing art.
And that's generally all I wanted to cover tonight. Got both remaining princesses done at once, although like I said it was really kind of just me talking about Rosalina. Still, I hope this was interesting for fans of both!

part 2/6
Tumblr media
2nd part of my old Black Sails scraps and doodles from 2016–2021. Not in any particular order.
This time the drawings are short comics that were abandoned for a reason or another, mostly because I lost the interest or felt like there was too much to redraw compared to the satisfaction of finishing something else more interesting. There’s also some talk about rigid mindset and how overthinking can lead to stagnation.
Contains early silverflint moments, specks of dust, rackham's glasses are found, jealous-Billy spying, desk-Flint gets caught, "squint-squint", a quiet moment and its bird dilemma etc.
And please do not steal and repost elsewhere. But if you do get inspired, feel free to make your own interpretations!
Long-ish post under the cut!
Tumblr media
“What are you thinking about?”
“Specks of dust.”
“Liar.”
The idea was to show how much they and their relationship had changed. This was around 2016 when the season 3 began and I was still re-learning to draw with a tablet. Another art from the same time period (and idea) is this art: The Dynamic Duet.
And for some reason I was really stuck up thinking that I’d have to first do the sketch, then the clean line art, then planes underneath, then shadows etc. and I have always struggled with that kind of approach! Mainly because I hate doing clean line work, lol. And I was a fool for trying to start with a white canvas! It’s so much harder to find values and plan things, or at least in my opinion..
Tumblr media
“Rackham’s glasses are found”
To celebrate their new pirate alliance, they share the four lenses of Rackham’s sunglasses as they were also found at the time (because I wanted it to resurface and they could be made into jewellery you know...). This was right after the episode where Anne fights and hurts her hands (here wearing protecting mittens from Max even though she’s not trusted at the moment). Uh, this doesn’t spark joy interest me much and it’s quite stiff and would recuire a lot of redrawing faces, so - discarded!
I somewhat like the idea still (them having something to share, although it’s on Jack’s detriment). I tried to find a stylished comical easier doodlier? way to draw them and draw clean lines etc, but it just wasn’t for me. Also here too, the background is blank and too bright. Later I started to think things as scenes and draw everything at the same time instead of adding the bg later or trying to show everything (and everyone) at the same time.
Here’s also Billy in the same story:
Tumblr media
He’s spying on them and since it’s so bright he’s wearing his diy “sunglasses” and being envious to the others. *cough* uhhh...Idk? Also people were shipping Ben Gunn (and cheese) with Billy, so that bled into this too... Charles’ spirit is riding the “big white bird” that was mentioned in Teach’ story and in this case it’s a pelican.
As you can see, I also wasn’t using the brushes that I use nowadays. A hard (or soft) round brushes with no change in opacity just aren’t for me. For example, in traditional art, I struggle with markers and copics, but really enjoy charcoals and watercolours. I prefer ragged edges, layering and thus blending things into each other (and leaving the viewer to fill in the gaps) instead of having stark or definite things. I also struggle with vector drawings, although I have decided to finally start learning to use them...somedayyyy.
Also, I wasn’t paying attention to anatomy, like, at all LMAO. I was just so happy to be able to put something on the canvas.
Tumblr media
This is one of my first ink drawings, but I cannot find the original anymore. Again, I like the idea, but not how things look art-wise. And I was so adamant, that I have to get everything right in the traditional drawing and not fix anything later on on photoshop because then it would be cheating. And thus, I was never able to move on or finish this properly the way I liked it (idiot).
BUT! It was a good practise to just draw and test things on paper and gain confidense on drawing things in overall (as I was still getting back into art). To get over the fear of blank paper you know, and try to find my style whatever it would start to form into.
Oh, yeah, Desk Flint.
Desk Flint was a thing for a while (still is, lol). Another drawing from that time is this Slingshot Pirate (2016). And Desk Flint keeps repeating in many later works too. The point is mainly “Flint sitting behind his desk and people interrupt him and I don’t have to draw him fully”
Well, anyway... moving on.
Here’s a plan that has been stuck for years. It’s name is “Squint-squint.” Left is the sketch (with another sketch underneath because the expressions were clearer in the old one). On the right is the continued piece with colour scheme but I cropped the eyes panel and faces out (it was so ugly for some reason) but if I ever continue/finish this, it will be redrawn there in the middle.)
Tumblr media
Left. “On that moment their eyes were literally open(ed).”
Right. “After squinting on the shore for days, they had actually forgotten how pretty the other idiot’s eyes were.”
I still like it, quite a lot, but my perfectionist ass only sees too much “boring” things to draw and get right, so it hasn’t been a priority for a long time and other works have kept me occupied and more interested in them.
--------------------
“Quiet Moment.” 2018 (a wordless comic happening after the events of Charles Town)
I’m going to explain after these pictures, but see how big the difference is when you start to look at references and plan things together (the space, “camera” movement, background etc). I also started to colour with coarser brushes:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I drew this around early 2018. A lot of improvement! Still quite a lot of negative space (empty white backgrounds), but it fits this work. A few things tell where we are (the ship’s cabin and the balcony). Changing distances and how things are cropped/framed make things more moving and focused (and less to draw, lol). Colours and brush strokes are softer, more layered and so on.
But guess why it’s still a wip!
I couldn’t decide what bird is flying over there.
Yeap! At first it was an albatross (doesn’t go to Bahamas?). Then a seagull (but which seagull? there’s so many subspecies! Is the ship at sea or at the harbour? what birds are there on the open water/ close to the shore?? oh noo...) So, yeah, wayyyy too much over-thinking.
At some point I ended up with white-tailed-tropic-bird which was a plus! because it sounds like the bosun’s whistle, but at that point I was so tangled and frustrated and still had so much to finish with this that I left it be. Also Flint’s face looks different in every frame so I would’ve had to change some parts, lol. And then I forgot it for a couple of years! And then I had learned to draw a bit differently and again saw too much things to do, so it’s quite hard to take on this again, especially when there are so many other interesting wips waiting...
But I still really like the feeling of it! And the colour scheme. So I might just limit the things I’m allowed to fix and then post it as it own someday. I mean, it’s 90% finished, but the last reach just feels like miles.
And that’s what usually happens with my wips. They reach a certain point and it suddenly becomes really hard to finish or get back into.
But every time I learn things and then use the information in another work! :D
Final note for this post (altough this has been said hundreds of times): use references and look how things go and try to see the structure and form beneath things. And think where it is happening and how the light and surroundings affects the characters and/or spaces. And maybe think what you’re trying to convey with the art, what idea? what emotions? what purpose? or like, what are you trying to learn with the piece? and so on...
Thanks for checking this out, I hope you had fun <3

Artistic Vision
Summary: In which Nene models for Mei despite her insecurities.
Rating: G
Warning: There’s references to Nene’s body image issues and some body-shaming.
Notes: So, like MeiNene is also pretty underrated and I just thought the idea of Nene modeling was too good to resist. Hence, this fic. It’s pretty simplistic but it’s not very often that I get to tackle mundane issues and I hope I still did alright. I also hope we see more interactions from these two in the future.

The sun is setting, and she’s keeping a little anxious. Orange light filters through, casting the entire art room in an almost eerie, ethereal glow. Nene supposed it could make for quite the romantic scene—but rather than a boy confessing to her, she sits on a pedestal with her feet propped up.
Well, when you put it that way, it does still sound dreamy. I can imagine Aoi in this situation—except Aoi would be getting her face drawn.
Instead, Shijima is fixated on her feet. Her ankles, specifically, with such intensity that Nene almost wishes she could suck them into the depths of her skirt, never to be seen again. Except Shijima had begged her to be allowed to draw them.
“They’d make such a unique subject, Yashiro-san! So distinct! An absolute must to recreate!” she exclaimed. And Nene, desperate to please and easy when it came to flattery, couldn’t turn her down, even if the idea of someone staring at her swollen ankles for hours on end was—perhaps not the scenario she most dreamed about.
Shijima was still scribbling away. Her gaze intense behind her glasses, and it would’ve been flustering if Nene hadn’t gotten used to it after the first hour.
Being a model isn’t nearly as cool as I thought it’d be. I feel all stiff.
“Oh,” Shijima says suddenly, looking up at her. “Do you need a break, Yashiro-san?”
“M-Maybe a little.”
“Sorry, sorry.” Shijima waved her hand, ever friendly. “It’s been a while since I’ve had a human model. And I get too caught up. You know.”
“I know,” Nene echoed quietly. “But, I don’t mind sitting here. I would just...like some water and a minute to stretch out, maybe.”
“No problem. I’ll get you some.”
“I’d appreciate it!”
Shijima sets her sketchbook and pencils aside. She had used multiple ones, which all looked pretty fancy. Nene can only imagine what it would be like if she were having her portrait painted. Even now knowing how tedious modeling was, the idea was an exciting one.
“Such a beautiful, elegant, and perfect young lady you are, Nene-san!” The painter exclaimed. He was, of course, represented by a vaguely but incredibly attractive man. “I couldn’t possibly hope to capture your radiance!”
Nene only laughs, noble and ever so proper.
“As long as just a fraction of my beauty can be shared, it’s all I can wish for!”
“So generous! So humble! I love you so much, Nene-sama!”
Something like that, maybe?
“Ehehehehe.” Nene couldn’t help but giggle. “Oh no, I can’t possibly model for all of you...”
“It’s just me here, Yashiro-san,” Shijima reminded her. Nene yelped, but rather than comment further, Shijima just offers her a cup. “Here’s some water. Sorry that it’s room temperature.”
“T-That’s fine! It’s fine! I’m fine!” Nene took it and nearly downed all of it, nearly choking in the process. Shijima’s face twitched, but when Nene glanced her way, she was perfectly composed. Somehow, she didn’t feel at ease. “Shijima-san, um, you didn’t get any for yourself?”
“I’m fine,” Shijima chirped, much more convincingly than Nene could hope to be. She sits back down, once again taking her sketchbook. “You’re the one unused to all of this.”
“Aha,” Nene laughs dryly, sipping a bit more modestly. “I admit, I’ve only ever dreamed of being in this position before.”
“Was it everything you ever hoped it’d be?” Shijima asked.
“I... Not really.” Nene shook her head. “No offense to Shijima-san, but I was imagining something a little more romantic.”
“Romantic, huh,” Shijima droned, now tapping her pencil to the paper. “Right. There are people out there who think modeling can be more intimate than it actually is. Well. I could always ask to draw you naked—if you’re comfortable with that.”
Flustered, Nene shook her head much more furiously than before.
“J-Just my ankles are fine!”
“I was joking.” It hadn’t really sounded like a joke, but Nene was happy to brush it off regardless. “You know—it’s kind of weird. Talking with you like this.”
“Eh, why?” Nene asked. “We’re friends, aren’t we, Shijima-san?”
Shijima hummed.
“A model and their artist—have a bit of a different relationship than that of friends. But yeah, we’re friends. I was really happy when you agreed to model for me. I did really want to draw your ankles. They really do have such a unique shape.”
I don’t think I can take that positively even if Shijima-san means it that way.
“You’re so self-conscious about them,” Shijima did observe. “Covering them with your hand isn’t going to hide them, Yashiro-san.”
Nene retracted her hand, straightening out her legs even as it was embarrassing to do so. When her eyes inevitably lingered on those swollen ankles of hers, she found herself deflating.
“They’re unique,” she admitted. “But they’re not very attractive, are they?”
Shijima blinks at her. Nene quickly shrugged.
“I-I mean, as happy as I am to help you—I do wish I didn’t have these. These ankles, I mean. I mean...” Her shoulders trembled as she forced a laugh. “The make me look like a daikon. Daikons aren’t exactly known for being pretty.”
“You don’t think you’re pretty?”
I mean—there’s a reason why you’d rather draw my weird ankles instead of my face, right?
The question lingers on the tip of her tongue. Her face feels hot. She wonders what expression she must be making because it feels awfully twisted. She can’t even tell Shijima’s gaze right now, with those thick glasses as a barrier. All the same, she must surely be acting like an annoyance right now.
“Sorry. Just forget I said anything, Shijima-san.”
Shijima hums but she’s poised to resume drawing all the same.
“Straighten your back please, Yashiro-san. Your posture needs to be the same as before.”
Nene does so. After a few more adjustments, she returned to how she should be, and Shijima resumed.
“I should be done in a bit. You can still keep drinking water, Yashiro-san. Just don’t move your feet.”
Nene nodded, taking another sip.
“I just said not to move, Yashiro-san.”
“A-Ack, sorry! Sorry, sorry!”
“I’m joking, you’re fine.”
“Eh.” That didn’t sound like much of a joke... “Okay, then.”
She fixes her posture all the same, ever self-conscious. Shijima doesn’t make a second remark and her face is still stoic. Unreadable. If Nene hadn’t seen her excitable before, she’d wonder if Shijima could emote at all.
That’s such a judgy thought. She reprimanded herself. Aoi would be ashamed of you, Nene.
Still—since she was thinking of Aoi again, she wondered something else.
Shijima-san is comfortable with me because we’re friends. But there might be other people she’d rather draw.
“Even without looking at your face, I can tell you’re deep in thought,” Shijima remarked then, making her flinch. “Careful, Yashiro-san. Seriously. Don’t move that much.”
“S-Sorry, I was just taken aback!” she exclaimed. “I-I mean, you’re so stern sometimes but—you’re pretty perceptive too, Shijima-san. I guess that’s the eye of an artist for you.”
Shijima makes a non-committal hum.
“I know you said to forget before,” Shijima began. “But—sorry, Yashiro-san. I’m still bothered by it. You’re so harsh on yourself just for—what? Your uniquely swollen ankles?”
“Slender legs are prettier,” Nene said, just a tad more frustrated than she wanted to be. “Guys don’t like thick legs. They don’t care for thick ankles, either.”
“I think they’re artistically inspiring,” Shijima replied. “In fact, when you enroll in college, you should maybe see if you can model for figure drawing classes.”
“While does sound nice,” Nene murmurs, definitely thinking of admiring college boys before shattering that fantasy with her own metaphorical fists. “I’d rather not get leered at like a shrunken head in an oddities museum.”
Shijima adjusts her glasses. She pauses in erasing.
“Is that how you see it? What a shame. But—I guess that’s just what it is, being concerned about stuff like that. I wouldn’t know—with how unremarkable I look, I don’t get much attention. And I don’t really care to, either.” She resumes, sighing as she does. “But—I do love drawing your ankles. And I think—they’re beautiful in their distinction. You shouldn’t judge yourself by narrow beauty standards. Those aren’t just limiting, they’re destructive. And the people who prefer them are often impossible to please anyway.”
Ah, huh. Shijima-san sounds—pretty mature, just then. Still. Still.
“Who’d want an ugly chick with fat daikon legs?”
Nene’s hands fist into her dress for a while before she forces herself to relax.
“Done,” Shijima droned and with an actual smile, she turns her sketchbook around to show off her work. “What do you think, Yashiro-san?”
“Yeah,” Nene said distantly, nodding and swallowing. “Those are—definitely my ankles.”
It was eerie how perfect a recreation they were. Nene could see in horrifying detail how rounded they were, how even her feet looked big, toes too curled and the arches too defined. When was the last time she did her nails? They desperately needed a clipping, and oh god, had she missed hair on her legs the last time she shaved—?!
But, somehow, in the midst of her spiral, Nene did notice Shijima’s fingers. Stained with graphite. She noticed how the paper had been crinkled from having to redraw parts several times over. The recreation was perfect—only because Shijima had been so insistent. And Shijima looked so proud of it, too, even though Nene hated the look of them so much.
Blinking, Nene could ultimately only smile in return.
“You did a great job, Shijima-san.”
Whatever she sees—she’s passionate about. That must count for something.
“You weren’t too bad of a model,” Shijima said. “Can we do this again sometime, Yashiro-san?”
She hesitated but she ended up nodding, smile tightening.
I want to see what she sees one of these days.
