❓ Qué leer 2021❓ Parentesco, de Octavia Butler Leído para el reto #LeyendoDiversidad2021 de@petudc ➡️Desliza para ver la sinopsis 🦄 Es un libro del que realmente esperaba más. La premisa es buena, una mujer afroamericana del siglo XX, que además está casada con un hombre blanco, es trasladada de pronto a una plantación en el sur de Estados Unidos. El choque cultural y la necesidad de adaptación son centrales en esta novela 🦄 Creo que la autora podría haber mostrado con un poco más de detalles, un poco más de crudeza, la vida de los esclavos, para que pudiéramos entender mejor algo que fue un horror para miles de personas. Tiene dos o tres escenas impactantes, el resto es demasiado "relatado" en lugar de "retratado". Logramos acercarnos, pero no vivenciar el espanto real de la situación 🦄 A los personajes los sentí muy lejanos, casi acartonados, ninguno logró atraparme del todo. La estructura de la novela es lineal, confieso que me pasé esperando un plot twist que nunca sucedió. Inicio, desarrollo y final y eso es todo 🦄 Está catalogado como un libro de Ciencia Ficción, pero para mí entra en la categoría de lo Fantástico, ya que hay mucho que no nos explica. Los personajes aceptan lo que sucede como normal, aunque les cambia la vida y eso es una característica de lo Fantástico. ❓ #QOTD - Where's a less-commonly visited location that a book has taken you? I just got back from Nigeria, y'all. Lol, not really, of course. But Akata Witch took me there. But, first, lemme just say I've been reading more middle grade lately, as the angst of a lot of YA just isn't my cuppa tea at the moment. But it's weird because MG is just as dark, if not darker sometimes. Yet somehow it doesn't affect me in the same way 🤷‍♀️. Anyhoodles, I read Akata Witch after hearing it described as "African Harry Potter," and you know what? Not a bad description. Of course, it's very much it's own book--the trope "kid finds out they have magic powers and goes to a school to learn to use them" defo wasn't invented by JKR; her books just massively popularized the format. Akata Witch takes place entirely in Nigeria, and it was fascinating to be immersed in, not just that culture, but a magical world based on that culture. I love me some British Isles-style magic and legends, but, y'all, that has been done a _lot_, myself as an author included. This book was fresh and new for me and challenged me as both a reader and a writer to look beyond my own usual scope of ideas.
