so a huge list of artists that was used to train midjourney’s model got leaked and i’m on it
literally there is no reason to support AI generators, they can’t ethically exist. my art has been used to train every single major one without consent lmfao 🤪

I’ve posted a lot about AI art but i haven’t really posted the underlying emotional response that really drives so much of my thoughts on it.
When Dall-E 2 burst onto the scene I felt a cold pit my stomach. It felt as if something had been taken away. These ML engineers had taken a good chunk of the breadth of human visual art (something that as an artist on any scale you hope to contribute to in your own way) they had drawn a line in the sand and had said to those on the other side: “we don’t need you anymore, we have our tool. You’re obsolete, what you do has no value if our tool can do it better and quicker”
and they had done so seemingly with glee and either wilful ignorance or no care at all for the implications. And made me angry. Most of all because they had done it with the existing work of so many human artists. It was like in Ledgend of Korra when the equalists wanted to take away eveyones bending (disclaimer: i haven’t seen Korra)
That sounds pretty dramatic and i know plenty of people would say that humans have the inate desire to create regardless of any outside factor (and this is true) and this is hardly the death knell for human created art.
it’s very easy to be dismissive or even ridicule some of the arguments people make against AI (it’s “soulless” ain’t a good one even if it feels emotionally true) it’s also very easy to shrug your shoulders and believe that these are just casualties in the name of “progress”
but people need to understand those who are against AI art are grieving. They’re grieving something intangible they don’t quite understand. Maybe it’s their place in the world and what it even means to do what they do. Non artists don’t really understand that, untill an AI will replace them in something they took so much pride and practice in. Those feelings are valid and regardless of your views and to be met with a shrug or an eye roll i think is rather callous.
The luddites weren’t actually wrong. You can make a case the industrialisation was a net good for all, but again: the luddites weren’t stupid. They understood the implications.
I don’t feel this way as much anymore since i processed my feelings on the topic and have moves on. Art wasn’t meant to be a source of income for me, and the existence of AI won’t stop my quest for artistic glory. If anything I will double down out of spite. But we could stand to be a little more compassionate to people who do truly feel AI is a threat to them in some way. We don’t know what the future is going to look like, but it can be pretty overwhelming to think about.

Living Dangerously
Elements including James Dean, developed in Midjourney and design elements by designers from the Photo Artistry platform hosted by Sebastian Michaels at Photoshop Artistry (at a special price). I joined this platform around 7 years ago and started to learn photoshop to refine my editing skills in photography. It took me down a different road and really love the process to create a mixture of montage/collage and photo manipulation techniques, using stock images, my own photography and element from other designers. Recently I started delving into Midjourney where I create elements on a white background, extracting and composing these elements in photoshop which gives another dimension to my current work flow. If you are a digital montage artist, please say hi and share your work flow.
