BnHA Ch. 371 leak reactions:

Koda looks badass, which is something I never though I’d say. Also, his quirk evolution is amazing!

SO happy Horikoshi focused on Shoji’s humanity and the personal impact that discrimination had on him rather than on society at large.

And Hori captured it with nuance too — Shoji clearly suffered but he also learned to shift his focus to the things that make him happy (which coincidentally are also the selfless things that help others). It’s a very Buddhist perspective.

Similarly, Shoji has his eye on the next generation already. Big problems can’t be fixed by one person, one class, or even one generation. Long term, consistent, collective effort is the key.

Shoji rescuing a girl from DROWNING, you say?? Reaching out a hand to a child in a river??? Wow, that sure hits on some themes.

Shoji’s backstory also gives more insight to what he told Izuku during the retrieval of “Dark Deku.” After what Shoji has survived, he doesn’t want to be seen as a victim, he wants to be seen as a hero:

Mineta DID call Shoji an octopus after Sero did, but then Mineta called Shoji sexy. Just to clarify :)

Shoji’s speech to Spinner sounds a LOT like what Shoto said to Toya exactly 20 chapters ago! “We know what it feels like to be hurt” = “Dad was a madman! Our family was screwed up” and “Yep, that’s me” = “You’re not wrong about me.” It’s a formula we keep seeing from the heroes in this final arc: Validate the villains as much as possible, and accept their insults with objectivity and grace.

And now for another MHA headcanon to wash down that awful political aftertaste: Koda is not only big on recycling, but he's big on sustainable living in general, whether buying food, bath products, clothing, etc... His hero costume is even made from recycled materials.

Wash Day

" You should be in bed.” Hawks said leaning against the door.

She was very much not in bed, and found herslelf standing in the bathroom mirror, looking at her reflection. She had to do something about her hair, but she broke one of her arms, and 3 fingers on the other. Sure she go to bed doing absolutley nothing with her hair, but it would become a mess that nothing short of shaving it all off would fix it.

“ I gotta do something to my hair?”

“ Then why aren’t you?” he asked, walking behind her. His hands wrapped around her waist.

“ I fucked up both of my hands.” she snapped. Her arms felt like shit, and she wanted to throw up and sleep. But she wouldn’t throw up beacause she hadn’t eaten all day, and she couldn’t sleep until her hair was braided her hair. And she couldn’t braid her hair because her arm hurt.

Keigo didn’t take it personally, he knew that she was in a whole bunch of pain, and dead on her feet. He kissed the top of her shoulder and hugged her waist. She fund herself crying.

“ I’m sorry... I didn’t mean too... it’s just everything.” she whispered “ I’m overwhelmed and I’m tired and I-”

“ It’s okay, I understand.” he whispered. He stroked her cheeks with his fingers. “I know your arms probabaly feel like shit. Do you want me to help you with your hair, so you can sleep?”

“ Thanks for offering honey, but I don’t think you know how.” she tried to smile, but only cried some more.

“ Yeah I can, I used to help Miriko with hers before she got braids. Now do you want twists or bantu knots?”

He said motioning her to the edge of the bathtub. The woman was too stunned to speak, and frankly even if she wasn’t stunned she still wouldn’t have said anything. She trusted Hawks, and even if she was apprehensive if he said he knew what he was doing, he did.

“ Don’t forget to detangle it.” she said. “ If you don’t then it’ll be hall knotted in the morning.”

“ I know what I’m doing, baby trust me.” he kissed the top of her forehead. “ Now which products do you want me to use?”

“ The one with the pink lid and the yellow one please.” she whispered/

He started to comb trough her hair, and she finally let her body relax. She was still in pain, but she was with her Keigo, who made her feel relaxed and safe. And nobody had ever brushed her hair besides her mom, who stopped doing her hair when she was old enough to do it herself.

“ That’s it, all done.” he whispered when he was done.

Her hair was put into little twists and he even put his favorite bonnet on her, while she was sleeping.

“ I hope it’s okay, I put some oil on your scalp because your roots were dry.” he whispered. “ Now lets get you to bed so you can take your meds, and sleep, yeah?

I've seen some talk about Koda's quirk evolving but I wonder if there's something else going on here.

In the past, quirk evolutions have always been about developing an already existing power. Think Toga evolving to use the quirks of the people she looks like and Bakugo making explosions from all over his body. But as far as we know Koda's head has nothing tod I with talking to animals. It's something else unrelated like Tokoyami's head or Mina's horns. So my question is.....

Has Koda always been able to do this?

We're right in the middle of a discussion on heteromorphism. We know that Koda has a stake in this battle because of the way his head is structured. We also know he's shy. So it would make sense for him to hide an ability which is related to his appearance for fear of being mocked. Especially since he has a much more socially acceptable quirk at his disposal.

But what does it do? The most obvious answer is it's like a battering ram or a rhino's horn. Something strong and heavy that can be used as a blunt force weapon. But what if it's something more? I'm so curious 👀
