Meau's fur and body shape here reminds me of the Boar-q-pine from Avatar the Last Airbender.

The emotion in your comic is so awesome--My stomach is in knots! I hate that I don't know if child-Mew is alive or not, but I guess I'll have to wait to find out. X3

I was actually going for that look and feel so I’m SO happy it came across!! ;DD Since I also noticed a few lovely folk (you know who you are <3) ask about Meau’s reference sheet/ mega design, here’s all the concept sketches! She didn’t really have a sheet, but I had the vague idea. I wanted a kind of feral, sabertooth/kangaroo mix. I initially had a secondary design that was more refined and sleek, but I felt it didn’t fit the rage nor really fit the ancient vibe. It may be used as X evolution or maybe for mew themselves, but we’ll have to wait and see.

And thank you ;u;,, I know some bits were wonky, but I really hope it made the impact I was aiming for!! I promise I gets happier from here on out, we just needed this big outta the way ;3

Why I think Alain is in the Masters 8

(I kept trying to post this earlier but the app kept crashing)

With the free time recently because of the breaks and recaps, I thought I would share my guess as to why they included Alain despite him not battling Ash

If you aren't aware a lot of fans wanted Ash vs Alain not only for a rematch/redemption but they didn't see the point of him being included if not to battle Ash

And some would say to at least give him us Alain vs Steven

But my guess as to why he was included is simple

Alain is the closest to a “lead”/main character aside from Ash in the anime

He led the mega evolution specials/aka a separate show/spin-off

So his appearance is like the equivalent to Future Trunks in Dragon Ball with the History of Trunks Special (special side material that brings a character into the main story)

Not a perfect example but I hope you get my point

So with the eight slots, 6 were champions and another by Ash of course, why not have the other anime lead be the other slot?

That way the other spots are the main characters

Jimmy could technically fit as well as he was the lead in the Legend of Thunder specials and could be the Johto rep so it wouldn't be two Kalos and Lance could be Kanto, Ash with Alola, making it a bit more region diverse

And honestly, I wouldn't have minded that

But I think Chronicles was so long ago plus Alain was more relevant and popular so it works out

So yeah I just think it was just having another main character take that spot and the only “main” characters are Ash in the main anime, Goh as he's a co-lead (when you consider characters like Dawn supporting or a deuteragonist), Alain the ME specials, Jimmy the LoT specials and kinda characters like Misty, Tracey, and Ritchie because of Chronicles

Tracey and Goh aren't battlers

Ritchie shifted his battle focus like Gary

Misty wouldn't be that high if she participated

Leaving Jimmy and Alain

And we have a clearer showcase of Alain's power than Jimmy’s

So I think Alain was the easy choice in that aspect

Then just story wise

Ash didn't officially beat Alain but Alain admitted Ash was better at the end of XY after the team flare stuff

Alain wants to be strongest even with the shift to researching he probably still wanted to be strongest so having that chance as Leon is the strongest and has the strongest Charizard was the best battle for him character-wise

As losing to Ash wouldn't help his character it would just be for us the audience that felt Alains statement at the end of XY wasn't enough

And battles against Steven or Diantha would be fun but wouldn't do much for his character unless saying that maybe Alain>Diantha and he should be champion matters to the audience that much

As at most, it would be like mega-evolution research for him

Power level

I think this is the least debatable, especially with all the XY fans out there lol

But if in the mega evolution specials his Charizard could beat Malva’s mega houndoom her ace

And Malva’s an elite four member

And Elite 4 members are more or less equal with each other with only notable standouts like Flint

And Alain got stronger since that battle with Malva as he hasn't even met Ash yet who pushed him to be stronger

But by the finals, Alain was high E4 level if not low-champion level

And even if he didn't get stronger since XY

If he's low E4/low-champion he's on that similar tier of characters like Raihan, Flint, and Wallace so with a decent schedule he could have gotten in with characters like Raihan Flint and Drasna at the top of Ultra/was in M8

And if you don't think the XY characters were that strong in XY (like maybe the animation and choreography made the weaker characters look stronger)

Then you have to give a similar level and progression of growth characters like Ash and Iris have

Regardless if it's “believable” or whatever Ash and Iris are champions and champion-level batters so if Alain is on their level he went through similar growth

All in all, I liked his inclusion

I think he served his role well and honestly even after my explanation,

Ash vs Alain might have been a more exciting battle than Ash vs Steven for the casual viewer as with Steven it was offense vs defense but with Alain, it would be offense vs offense which if it doesn't result in one shots (I'm joking btw) then it would be a more intense battle I feel (not that Ash vs Steven was bad I love it personally) as it would be more attacking and speed and such vs Steven’s more defensive and strategic style which lead to stuff like Cradily’s ingrain strategy

Let alone the viewer's feelings about the rematch and inevitable Ash win/redemption

But for Alain, Leon was the right choice for an opponent just like for Iris Cynthia was the right choice

It not only adds to their story similar to other past companions we've seen in journeys, but it also gave us fun unique battles and for better or worse power scale debates

Megas I want to introduce in my California region, because I want them back desperately. I'm going in order of the national dex, and giving some reasons for each of them why I want that Pokemon to get a mega, too.

Buterfree-Beedrill got a mega

Raichu-Pre-evolution is the franchise's mascot

Golduck-So it can get the psychic type

Rapidash-I want to give both forms wings, like Twilight Sparkle, make them an alicorn

Farfetch'd-Just the Kanto version. Not the Galairan since it evolves. Just want to make the Kanto one special, too

I'm putting all the Eeveelutions together, I mean if I want to give a mega to one I have to give it to all of them

Johto starters-It seems like the next logical step after Kanto and Hoenn

Ariados-I'd imagine it as a bug-dark type. That'd be sick

Slowking-Slowbro got a mega

Skarmory-I'd imagine it would mega evolve into a knight, get a sword and/or shield, that'd be cool

Linoone-Just the Hoenn version. Honestly same reason as Farfetch'd. I would bring in the other Galrian forms that got a new evoultion too, but I don't because I don't really like the other ones (Mr. Mime, Corsola, Cofogrigus) to justify saying they should get a mega, or Meowth, who already has too many forms.

Swellow-I just like Swellow, and I think the only two-stage bird (except for Noctowl) should have a mega, I mean if Pidgeot got one

Breloom-I love Breloom and think a mega would just be cool

Flygon-Obviously

Zangoose and Seviper-Megas for these two rivals, and perhaps seeing an anime battle of the two megas too

Milotic-Gyrados got a mega

Bibarel-Because I adore Bidoof, that's it

Luxray-So it can get the dark type

Gastrodon-Either seeing two forms depending on which one you do have, or one that combines the two forms, would be cool to see

Carnivine-I've seen fanart that makes it look like some creepy grass type. Give that mega a dark type and it would be a cool mega

Lumineon-To give it love. We could get a literal water butterfly for the mega (it's based on a sea butterfly)

Weavile-If Cynthia's ace got a mega, I think maybe Cyrus's should've too.

Yanmega-Its name would be mega Yanmega. That would be a cool name. Like a palindrome but not.

Gliscor-Some sort of scorpion-bat would just be really cool

Froslass-Glalie got a mega

Serperior-My own personal biases talking, since Snivy is my favorite Pokemon

Gigalith, Haxorus, Braviary, Mandibuzz-Ok, so Unova admittedly doesn't have a lot of memorable Pokemon, but I thought of Unova Pokemon that getting a mega would be pretty cool for those

Gogoat-I always wanted a goat Pokemon then we got Gogoat. I just have a soft spot in my heart for it.

Toucannon, Salazzle, Thievul-Not much reason for these, than just adding in some later Pokemon who getting a mega would also be cool for them

Finally is Torterra, Cinderace, and Primarina. You may wonder why these; well, it's kinda like why the Hisuian starters got brand new forms. I couldn't think of new starters for my California region, so like Hisui, I chose pre-existing ones who could live in North America. Since Legends Arceus introduced Hisuian forms and that's what those starters got, since my region is introducing new megas, I think it would be appropriate to give it to my starters, too.

The “retconning” of Ash-Greninja, does it change XY?

I don’t want to go into how it's potentially bad if they're seriously trying to retcon it. It’s not confirmed and the purpose of the changes are not known or clear so I don’t want to go into it without more information.

But I did want to explore how it affects Pokemon XYZ.

So if it's retconned there are two main ways to retcon it

Getting rid of it as if it never existed

Or

Changing the mechanics of the bond phenomenon

Changing how it's viewed/works

Basically changing the mechanics of “Ash-Greninja” and the bond phenomenon

I think the easiest way to change it would be that Greninja has an Ability (Battle Bond) that gives him a lot of strength and connects/syncs it with Ash when triggered.

And it made the water tornado thing before it was mastered.

Can say it's a lot like Infernape blaze but handled differently

This ability gives it the power up of mega evolution but wouldn't physically transform the Pokemon and is kinda like abilities like Guts and Torrent but to match the Mega evolution stat increase and the trigger would be different

This leaves the Alain stuff the same as Greninja when this ability is triggered has the mega energy.

Ok so that's an idea on how it's changed

You can tweak/change whatever is needed to make it make sense but it gets some sort power up just no form

So what does that mean for the series?

Not much, since it's an ability it leaves the training, Clemonts analyzing, and etc the same

It makes the perfected transformation scenes gone as at most it is just an aura like blaze or eyes changing like Ash’s Lucario so you don't see a transformed Greninja when it activates this “ability”

And the ninja village would just recognize the power instead of the physical appearance since the appearance wouldn't exist

So it means visually Greninja even with this special ability is battling Mega’s like Sawyers Sceptile and Alain’s Charizard in “base”

Instances like saying Greninja and Ash look-alike is more metaphoric or symbolic than visually as it could mean they're in sync and Ash moves the same as Greninja and vice versa.

Overall I think it just lowers the visuals of XY as the story remains the same you just don't have the transformation into A-G

So depending how much you like the physical form will affect your reaction to XY

Like for me personally I don't like the concept of Ash-Greninja as I just didn't like Greninja getting something specific that the other starters didn't get (like how Charizard got two Megas while Venasaur and Blastoise had one, I didn't enjoy that either) and that the form conveniently looked a lot like Ash. As even in story it's less like a legend or myth and just an Ash-specific thing if you don't focus to much on the ninja introduction episode.

I would of much preferred a Mega-Greninja (along with Delphox and Chesnaught) no matter how insignificant that would be in the greater scheme of things.

So retconning the appearance is fine with me obviously people won’t like it as to a lot it’s the same as a Mega Evolution and changing it can take a lot of the impact of the power up away which I can understand.

But in the idea that everything is the same and it’s just visually a base Greninja is ok with me.

The other way is a complete retcon by getting rid of this “power”

Meaning almost every instance of Ash-Greninja is gone or replaced

Basically, Ash with Greninja with no power-up was battling Megas in base just like how Pikachu and Hawlucha had in XY

Personally, I'm mixed on that aspect, I think on its own the idea that Ash got his ace to be on par with someone like Alain’s Mega Charizard X is incredible, and I think they could have written it like that as Pokemon like Pikachu has battled and beaten Mega Lucario by that point so it's not unrealistic that his ace in the series full of Mega’s would also be battling Megas and beating them as it also fills the underdog narrative Ash usually has as he's one of the couple powerhouses without a mega like Tierno and Clemont.

On the other hand, a lot of the episodes emphasized the Ash-Greninja transformation, so a lot of those episodes are completely changed or gone if you get rid of the power.

Like it could change Alain and Ash’s relationship as it was built on the incredible mega power Ash Greninja had. And as it was brought up in the latest episode of Lance vs Diantha, maybe it really would mean Ash only battled her once as the Ash-Greninja battle wouldn't happen in a retcon.

I don't know the number on hand but it would mean about 15+ episodes of XY/XYZ are changed or gone. Which I don't think it's good as lot of those are the better episodes in the series.

So in this one it's about the potential butterfly/ripple effect the now gone transformation would as now part of the story is confusing or gone.

And the only other factor would be that Greninja was battling Mega’s without being a Mega adjacent which could change how power scaling could be portrayed.

(personally I think it would be more impressive)

But in this case saying the power didn’t exist implies stuff didn’t happen which I don’t enjoy compared to the first option

Granted in Journeys Greninja still has this connection with Ash and the vine roots so it means something is still there even if you get rid of the power up aspect as him and Ash are connected and he can still see the roots

Also should bring this up as it was thought even back when XY was airing

If the physical transformation was just a visual thing for the audience

Basically it was always just regular Greninja and to make some lines consistent Greninja still had the water tornado phase and then converted it to water shuriken on it's back which signified the power up. But the Ash like hair on its head, the body resembling his XY outfit all that isn't real.

A lot like the first one but instead of changing it to an ability or something instead it’s still a transformation but doesn’t look the same as it did

Basically it's for us the audience or all in Ash’s head and the actual transformation never was a thing

Another mixed bag…

People don't like the “it was all a dream” or “all in his head” trope and this would be similar

On one hand it wouldn't change the episodes and would again just be speaking metaphorically about looking like each other lines and other such things

On the other, it changes everyone's perspective on that series and now this one (JN) and would feel lied to

Overall I like bits and pieces of the two options as I’m personally not drawn towards Ash-Greninja

So not seeing that form is fine with me, but for the series XY it would need to be an ability that just doesn’t look the same vs saying it doesn’t exist as that affects that series too much because they wrote too much around it. So an ability mixed with the all in Ash’s head can be a good work around but will not be received well by most fans I’m guessing
