i think most people who have been reading fic for a while have perfected the art of the 'i'm reading smut in public' poker face.

every now and then, though, you run across a fic that challenges that. this one was definitely one of those for me.

this fic starts with a bang and somehow gets impossibly hotter with each section. the excerpt i picked above is absolutely burned into my brain and was formative to the development of my personal headcanon of what geno's like in bed—geno getting bossed around and sid getting off on picturing it? lord have mercy, it's scorching.

the really masterful part of this fic is how the smut informs the characterizations. it can be really difficult to line up a sex scene to so excellently advance the plot and a relationship, but mediaville does an incredible job here—every fantasy sid has gives us more insight into who he is as a person, and every interaction he and geno have pushes their relationship forward in meaningful emotional ways, not just sexual. we get to watch them stumble through this thing they're figuring out together, acting out their feelings through sex first and then, finally, with words, and it's truly remarkable how perfectly it all works together.

sid and geno getting closer, sid pushing boundaries and introducing light D/s elements into their relationship without fully checking in with geno first, then circling back and making it right when he truly pushes too far—every single word of this fic is delicious. the edging sid puts geno through, the frank, graphic regard and appreciation sid has for geno's body, geno's clear desperation for what sid's offering to do—well. all i can really say is, read this one at home, because between the achingly sweet relationship development woven in with the scorching-hot smut—i cannot guarantee that you'll keep your poker face intact!

I tend to download my faves so I can read them later, it just means that when I go look for a bookmark, it's sad to see the whole "this fic was deleted" (paraphrasing) notification..thank god I jot down author and fic name! So yeah, I use collections for bookmarks, and two of them are all-stars, the greatest of the great, so this was a relatively easy ask to answer, thanks to past me. For the anon who asked me for fics with recreational drug use... this is for you. Some of these focus more on the drug use than others, I've tried to star the ones that do, but my memory may be a bit off.

* boy with kaleidoscope eyes by docklands (E, 8K) This was just lovely. There was so much tender sweetness in the way they treated each other and I loved that even though it was just in Louis’ POV, we still got a very clear picture of how Harry felt. Honestly Louis in this fic is just sweetest thing ever. Harry should marry that boy.

Faking It by TheCellarDoor (M, 46K) This one is so sweet. I loved Harry's internal monologue... his insecurities and thoughts that he'd made Louis uncomfortable because he liked, him made me cry. Louis is so soft and supportive. It’s just a lovely fic.

* sweet baby, our sex has meaning by publunchesownmyass (E, 8K) This author manages to make this fic romantic and filthy and super sexy all at once. Plus, Harry in that lace dress and you’ve got a winner.

* mon petit, little one by publunchesownmyass (E, 6K) Yes, you guessed it. Harry wears that fluffy sweater from the Tiny Desk performance in a much less innocent moment. I characterizations, banter, and situation felt really authentic and this fic is super sexy.

* violence of my own touch by orphan_account (E, 5K) I just found this fic today, actually, and was so moved by the way this author portrayed both Harry and Louis — the exhaustion, the confusion, the sadness, but also the deep love and need for each other. Alpha/Alpha.

* Have a Nice Trip by @kingsofeverything (E, 6K) I didn’t know I needed horny Harry tripping on ‘shrooms, but I definitely did! This is really funny and sweet.

My Lights Stay Up, But Your City Sleeps by PearlyDewdrops (E, 108K) Featuring lots of pining, really well done internal monologue from Louis, and excellent smut. It also has some really lovely writing that I felt captured the pain of mental illness/anxiety very well.

* Lightning Strikes Twice by @dinosaursmate (E, 106K) It’s not often that I read a 100+K fic multiple times, but this one is worth it. It’s one of my favorites from this author, and a favorite all around. It’s an epic love story spanning decades and massive life changes. It’s sexy and well-written, and so touching, and so fulfilling in many ways. Famous!Harry, groupie!Louis (also bookstore owner Louis, but that’s later).

kiwi by fondleeds (M, 24K) honestly I have trouble putting down anything this author writes…they just build a setting and detail characters in a way that I find really compelling. This one maybe feels slightly OOC, but it’s such a good read I didn’t care at all.

Promise Not To Stop When I Say When by becka, mediaville (E, 49K) Harry, Louis, Nick. So, read the tags here because it’s got some pairings that might not be your thing. HOWEVER, even with Nick involved, it’s hot af and it’s still endgame Larry.

* Young & Beautiful by velvetoscar (M, 227K) This fic is wordy and descriptive (which isn’t for everyone) and the characters are probably pretty OOC, but I love it anyway. I know that doesn’t sound like a recommendation, but truly the writing is poetry, the characters are so well-developed, the visuals and setting have stuck with me for years –– there’s a reason this one is a classic.
