Yknow I love Getter 2, it’s my favorite getter within the set of forms most of the time but I can’t help to notice compared to it’s counter parts it feels like it lacks the most in combat because it only has one weapon.

Like the main issue with Getter balancing is Getter 1 (sadly) gets all the attention, thus they prioritize it having the most weapons in its arsenal. (The tomahawk, a occasional gun, various getter ray based powers past getter beam) and even if Getter 3 is clearly the most shafted of the group it at least can do a lot with its arms and has missiles on top of that. (Really it’s issue more stems from it hardly gets used in fights and when it does it’s almost never a standalone one) But then you look at Getter 2, who gets a decent amount of usage but all it gets to do is drill things and those have noteworthy drawbacks as sometimes it’s drill is completely stopped or removed from its arm.

I do remember Neo2 has a sword but it’s not like Sho used it much given the length of SVN-and don’t remember if in the manga it even has it there as Getter Sho-and most base Getter 2s are just drill go brrr. I wish at the very least if they aren’t gonna give it a second weapon they idk do the Gurren thing where it’s a powerful green drill. (I say as I haven’t seen it but COME ON how did the heavy getter inspired show do a green powered drill but the series itself never did)

Having mecha brain rot, so I need to get this out somewhere:

Many popular mech concepts are about battle robots/suits, but my brain is SO into the idea of non-destructive mechs.

Mech suits that are built for construction workers: various shapes and sizes, accommodating to work in different conditions and at different altitudes — who's to say that what construction machinery already exists isn't close to piloting a suit? Mech suits for construction work in zero gravity!

Mech suits that are built akin to off-road vehicles, meant for exploration and research, and are used by scientists to traverse difficult terrain and collect samples where needed.

UNDERWATER MECH SUITS (like the prawn suit in subnautica, yes, I will always manage to circle back to subnautica somehow), that are somewhere in between.

Mech suits that are practically walking libraries with how much information has accumulated in their memory storage over time.

Mech suits that were built just for fun and as an exercise in robotics, passion projects, something that people simply care about.

I'm vibrating out of my own skin, I like thinking about this.

we kinda had a talk about it back before we were hired by cogs.. he was really upset and i was really worried about him.. he thought i wasnt gonna accept him because he was a toon

he cried so much that night.. and i told him honestly and i still stand by it even today. it doesnt matter if he was a toon once, or that hes a suit now.. hes the only person who’s shown me any kind of compassion since i gained consciousness. hes the only one who protected me, or showed me it doesnt matter how physically beyond repair i am, that i am still worth effort..

it was a weird night because we talked about so much.. in the end we came out a family and havent really gone back since. i wouldnt trade mundie for anything in the whole wide world

So I finished mazinkaiser awhile ago after months of procrastination on it and for one reason or another I’m not gonna give my solid thoughts on it but there is one specific thing I wanna point out, not as a critique but more so a confusion. That being: I find it weird how Mazinkaiser isn’t the turning point for Mazinger where they finally go “hey the robot is sentient” because it’s not yet near the end literally EVERYONE talks to Venus A as if shes actually a person:

I’m not saying this as a criticism for the reason of my already biased to vaguely sentient robots-because as much as I prefer this angle with mecha, I understand not every and all mecha can approach this because sometimes the robot is JUST a narrative tool and not a character, which is fine-however I’m confused with Mazinger of all things didn’t take this approach when there’s already so much emphasis on Mazinger being tied to gods. I mean, apart from the fact the robots are based off Greek Mythology and there is a constant message of “will it become God or Devil” which feels like it warrants this enough, it would start to make sense if the robot grew sentient because Mazinkaiser is treated as the ULTIMATE Mazinger. (And where have we heard a case where the “ultimate” form of a robot starts to be the one that displays more self awareness *cough* GETTAH🗿)

Especially also within this ova- it seems to do stuff on its own accord to PROTECT Koji, like going on auto pilot as he’s knocked out and somehow keeping him safe from being burned alive in magma, but I cannot tell if this IS a indicator Mazinkaiser is actually sentient or if it’s just all auto pilot. Oh and it’s a more minor thing but also just- the human poses Kaiser and Venus take during the beach episode… I cannot tell if that’s something they wanted or if their pilots just posed them comfortably because lines seem to blur with the robots just being treated as the extensive of the pilots. (Venus is literally based off of Sayakas appearance after all)

It’s just weird Nagai never went this route and just stuck to metaphorical stuff, when it feels like SOMETHING he would do given the nature of his stories and yet the only fully sentient Mazinger media I know is Zero. Of course I still have such a limited window on Mazinger so if this is me actually being wrong please feel free to correct me, but I still will never not find it weird Mazinkaiser lacks this aspect asides from maybe vague allusions to it that may or may not be implying it. Maybe if I ever rewatch it or find more Mazinkaiser content specifically I’ll be able to piece things together a bit more.

im very unreasonably pissed about the existence of the mecha minifig suits the ninja have, like you COULD have used that minifig budget for side characters and used the s1 ninja gi for now, or to somehow differentiate two villains aside from head and hair . hell you couldve used that budget on giving sora accurate hair. but no, prioritize the characters who were supposedly meant to be taking a backseat, and not your new main fucking characters ! great idea lego! real smart of you!

mecha is inseparable from fighter jets. there's a reason mech operators are called pilots and hardly anything else.

strapped to a chair rigged to blast itself out of the machine at the pull of a lever. a control stick in each hand, feet slotted into yet more controls. screens and instruments covering the panel in front of you. a helmet displaying all sorts of information, from altitude, to speed, to weapon readouts onto a heavily tinted visor.

a hose connecting your mouth to an oxygen supply with just enough room for a microphone. a full-body suit meant to keep you from passing out during maneuvers and from getting radiation sickness from the altitude you're fighting at.

dancing with death at unfathomable speeds with the most advanced weapons systems humanity can produce.

but one thing i haven't seen from fighter jets is mechs piloted by two people, who each control different systems.

there's "drifting" in Pacific Rim, but that's effectively splitting the sensory load of piloting between two brains. there's whatever the fuck Darling in the Franxx does, but i'm not touching that because i don't want to. combiners like Voltron or Megazords aren't really what i'm getting at.

i want to see a mech piloted by two people in tandem. pilot up front, weapons systems officer in the back. pilot fully immersed in the controls, pulling triggers, tracking individual targets. WSO flipping switches, tuning sensors, talking to command. watching the pilot's back. taking over controls in a desperate attempt to save their pilot when shit gets bad.

pilot plugged into a form-fitting control rig, reading the subtlest of inputs straight from their strained, damaged nerve endings. backseater plugged into a neural sensory interface, blending the machine's observational capabilities with their own senses.

one rendering anything in front of them a burning heap of slag with horrifyingly deliberate movements, but unable to handle the full burden of their machine;

one holding on for dear life, marking targets for certain death, but unable to pull the trigger themselves. desperately trying not to pass out when the pilot pulls crushingly high-G maneuvers.

the pilot is dead without someone in the back seat. the systems operator is dead without someone in the front.

two nervous systems becoming one: a mind that controls the body, and a body that controls the mind. only separated by the chassis between the crude, almost suicidal projectiles command calls "ejection seats." so inseparable you'd never think there was more than one person inside without seeing for yourself.

but perhaps it's better if you don't.

I think one thing that really gets me about Patlabor (especially Patlabor 2) is that it's mecha in the same way I consider Metal Gear Solid mecha. Like sure the robots aren't on screen fighting all the time but the story, its themes, and what it's trying to say all sprout from these fearsome machines. These stories all live in the shadow the machines they create and the political, societal, and material conditions that have led them to this point. And frankly, that's what really gets to me about mecha
