Summary: Kim Seokjin is the biggest Trust Fund Baby, it is no secret but he’s almost thirty and on the line to inherit his dad’s CEO position, which makes his family set a deadline for his engagement or he loses it all.

The one where Seokjin is no good with buried feelings but Y/N isn’t any better (they kinda hate each other and they have to share a bed okay, thats the cliche here)

Seokjin has always been one to enjoy the finest things in life, traveling around the world at any given time? check. shopping without checking the price tag? check. attending a top tier university? also check.

The thing is, one can only live so long without having to actually work for every single swipe of a black card. He is about to turn 28, youngest child of the most successful tech innovator in Korea and a former second-place Miss Universe, and he has yet to bring a girl home that provides him with some kind of secured future to the family name.

“We are not getting any younger” his mother had said the first few times the topic was brought up during their usual family Sunday brunch, but the words fell on deaf ears.

When his dad started getting involved in the matter, Seokjin knew he was over and done with.

But as much as his dad was headstrong, Jin was one himself too, he entered each blind date knowing that he would make whoever was sitting across from him, absolutely despise him after less than an hour went by, which was quite a hard task in itself, seen as he was pretty good looking and with a heavy amount of money under his name.

See, he would have probably agreed to marry to some of the girls that his dad sent his way, but every time he sat down for dinner with each of them, they were not even trying to fake being interested in him, just his lifestyle, whether it is if his dad was about to name him CEO any time soon or how much money they could blow off in the wedding.

He could do it for the rest of his living days, scaring off his father’s candidates, that is. It was somewhat fun, earning a weirded out look when he mentioned he liked bathing in goats milk religiously, or how he allegedly liked being put to sleep like a baby, he even once went as far as admitting a fake toe kink in the most perverted way possible when one of them just wouldn’t budge.

Then again, his fun could only last so long, as his father called him up to the office to give him a 30-day ultimatum or his trust fund would be taken away for good. Now that had the gears in his head working, how on earth would any sane enough person agree to marry in a month-long time.

“I’m not saying you’re not a keeper, hyung but I honestly don’t think I can take up such a responsibility,” Namjoon laughed as they sat in one of the campus’ lounge chairs while they waited for their class to start, the elder groaned in response.

“Could you imagine having to marry THE Kim Seokjn in less than a month, but also having to meet the standards of tech genius Mr Kim and universal beauty Mrs Kim” Jungkook laughed at his friend as he patted his shoulder in pity “I don’t think anyone is willing to put themselves through it hyung”

“Could you just- I don’t know, help me out a bit? I already know I’m fucked”

“Okay, let’s say… who could pass the scrutinising judgemental eye of the Kims?” the blond one offered, just a bit of teasing in his tone “They would have to be a girl, your father seems adamant on that one” he paused as if in thought “ A nice family name would help too”

“She would have to be good looking too, my mum says Seokjin-hyung’s mum can never be seen without looking like she is about to own a runway”

“Well that’s about it, I will be broke for the rest of my life, I won’t be able to pay my student loans, it was nice knowing you guys, I’ll just have to work at some greasy old diner to pay for a one-bedroom apartment somewhere out of the city and we’ll never hang out again because I’ll be a disgrace of society, this handsome face will just wrinkle and spot without the high maintenance and- ugh” he buried his face in between his hands, resting on the table in an overexaggerated manner after his rant, making the youngers try to stifle a laugh

“Whoa, what is the drama queen crying about now?” Taehyung, another friend of theirs approached the table after hearing the not so subtle commotion “Hyung, if your night cream went out of stock again, you know I can get my mum to ship some to you, we’ve talked about this”

If Seokjin’s dramatic outburst from before had made them laugh, Taehyungs’ confession made them burst in a fit of laughter that had both of them holding onto their sides “You’ve- you’ve had to restock Seokjin-hyung on- on night cream before?”

“And now he’s going to kill me, stop laughing!” he took a seat next to them “What is this about anyway?”

“His dad said he has to marry or they will completely obliterate his spending rights”

“Oh but, how hard can it be? You’re Kim Seokjin, just ask a girl to fake marry you”

“He’s just worried that after having a taste of Worldwide Handsome, they won’t let go ” Seokjin let out an overdramatic groan at that, continuing to fake cry, sound muffled by his arms

“Then just ask someone that doesn’t give two shits about your money or reputation to fake marry you”

“I don’t think such a person exists, hyung”

“Yah, Y/N is a good option, her family is filthy rich too”

“But isn’t Y/N… you know, a bastard child?” Taehyung was known amongst their scene as a social butterfly, not caring about the protocol they were subdued into when they were children, so it made sense that while for them it was almost a rule to never consider an illegitimate child a friend of theirs, Taehyung would just jump over that fact.

“Which is exactly my point, if you show up to your parents’ house, saying you’re ‘oh so in love with this black sheep’ I could bet my life, they’ll let you off the hook”

So maybe Taehyung was right, you were his best shot so far. Contrary to what most people new to the scene of Korea’s high society believe about your social status as an illegitimate child of the car emporium’s CEO and national treasure, he knows you are more of an insider, having grown up with him but… pretty much on the side. It wasn’t like you were alien to his lifestyle, but as you both grew up and he was involved more in the family business, you had grown apart, going as far as rebelling against your father once you were grown up enough to understand what being a bastard child meant for you.

He never stopped seeing you around though, once you started going MIA on business dinners and family trips, he thought enough to see you during classes.

However, you stopped being recognisable after he attended a semester abroad, coming back home to see pigtails and pink puffy dresses long gone, in their place, ripped jeans, which were completely unacceptable for a lady, according to his mum, and driving one of your dad’s self-proclaimed archnemesis designs.

It was a spring semester in high school, he could recall the time as if it were a precious memory, while the rest tried to pretend it had never happened in the first place; at age 27 he doesn’t have to try so hard to recall the way you burst into one of your father’s celebratory cocktails, drunk off your ass, barely managing to get a hold of some mic and screaming into it how he, and everyone else attending the party, had a stick up their asses that didn’t let them see anything but price tags before you were dragged off stage by security. He had giggled at it but his mother had scolded him, asking him to pretend as if you had never existed in the first place.

So of course, the secure way out of an arranged marriage was simple: you.

Now, this promised to be no easy task, he knew you hated his family almost as much as you hated your own father, but he also happened to know his way into negotiating an infallible plan that would get you to rebel against the system you were so adamant on taking down.

“Wait wait wait, so you’re telling me, asking me, to marry you” so perhaps approaching you on your way to class wasn’t the smartest way to do it, seen as you halted your hasty walk to turn to look at him, books in hand and looking like you hadn’t slept in days.

“Yeah, fake marrying me though”

“I would still sign a contract, Jin you do know we would be legally married, right?” he just raised his shoulders as if to dismiss your statement.

“Say, hypothetically I do it, I don’t think your parents would approve of me” you resumed your walk and he found it appropriate to play dumb with a smile on his face.

“Why wouldn’t they?”

You stopped walking again and blinked a few times his way as if debating inside your head if he really was that dense“Jin… I’m a bastard child, you know how it goes around here”

“Hmmm I’m willing to look past that, yeah” you stared at him for a few seconds before smiling in a knowing way, resisting the urge to roll your eyes at him, not being able to see past his words to his true intentions on the matter since you two hadn’t really hung out for years “So what do you say?”

“No thank you” you weren’t about to turn around once you started to walk away once again, but out of the corner of your eyes you could see him hanging his mouth open in that drama fashion he was known for.

Days passed and each one seemed to go by faster than the last, by the time two weeks were left, he could practically hear the ticking clock inside his head, reminding him that maybe he should have gone for an easier target, perhaps some girl from the country club that seemed to always try so hard to steal a glance from him. But then again, he wouldn’t get rid of her for all he’s worth.

Seokjin tries, again and again, everytime ending up with a no from you, he starts actually trying as his days run low, peer pressure, you’d call it as he set up a huge booth full of roses just outside your dorm building, a mic held in his hand as everyone around him took videos of THE Kim Seokjin making a fool of himself for a girl, your cheeks blazing red as you walked up to him, finally fed up with him as you angrily whispered to him “You’re asking me because you don’t think I am on your level, you honestly think less of me, why? because I didn’t grow up in a golden cradle like you and your friends? because I actually have to work for what I have? You’re an asshole Kim Seokjin, but I will prove you, I can absolutely charm both of your parents, I’ll do it” Seokjin’s grin taking over his features.

The first time you officially posed as Seokjin’s girlfriend, you wouldn’t have thought it would be one of the most nerve wrecking experiences in your life, having grown in a wealthy family, after your mother decided to leave you with your biological dad and his rightful heirs, you were no stranger to their roundabouts, their lifestyle and everything in between.

“Well you cleaned up nicely, Y/N” Seokjin said in a mocking tone, body resting against his black car just outside your dorm building as he watched you close the glass door, ready to drive both of you to his family’s vacation house all the way in Jeju Island

“Why aren’t you a gentleman and help me with my stuff?” you groaned as, once again, your suitcase betrays you and tries to slip away from your grasp.

“Nah, not really my thing” he adjusted his sunglasses perched on his nose as he mockingly added “...darling”

“Kim Seokjin, I am the one doing you a favour by going with you!” you shouted back at him, in a futile attempt to get him to help you as he was already buckling himself up inside the driver’s seat.

In all wealthy family fashion, as soon as Seokjin phoned back home to let his parents know that he was ‘finally ready to bring his girlfriend over’ his mum had gone all out and invited most of the inner Kim family for a weekend get together in one of their houses in Jeju, with just a text the night before having to leave campus as a heads up for you to get ready, currently on your way to catch a plane.

“Wait so let me just get this straight” you said, surprised at Seokjin’s story of how the conversation with his mum went down, turning in your seat to face him more clearly “just after month of your parents trying to set you up, you just went ahead and straight up lied to your mother by saying that you’re bringing your long time girlfriend that you just somehow never mentioned before?”

“Yeah, Y/N, didn’t you hear me out the first time?”

You let out something between a laugh and a scoff as you melted into your seat “We’re so screwed”

Two hours and a lot of bickering later, you are still pushing your own suitcase forward as you and Seokjin made your way to a rented car just outside the airport.

“Listen so- these family things are kinda..”

“Stuck up?”

“I was gonna say etiquette-driven, but yeah, stuck up probably fits best” he said as you buckled your seatbelt on, him beginning to drive away and towards his family address, somewhere from the side of your eye you could see his hand trembling lightly on the steering wheel. Could it be that Kim Seokjin was nervous? The Kim Seokjin?

“Relax Jin, I know exactly how to handle it. We grew up together, remember?” you said smiling at him as he turned your way for a second; to calm him down, but honestly it was more a thing to try and calm yourself down, having ran away from such a lifestyle, stirring things up in your family, only to end up somehow at the center of it all was sure a wild ride to be on.

“Yeah, I sometimes kinda forget you used to be so much better at this stuff than your sisters” his eyes lingered on you a second too long as you stopped at a red light, a small smile taking over his lips and the car behind you being quick to make it known that Seokjin was taking up too long to start the car going again when the light changed.

The ride was pretty much silent and kinda awkward but soon over with as the car pulled up to a familiar villa, white houses with fancy front gardens and over the top luxury cars lining up together as Jin parked on the third house on the right, just beside the one that used to be your father’s, and probably still was.

A woman was waiting by the entrance door, which you soon recognised to be Seokjin’s mum, looking just a tad older than how you remembered her from all those years ago, a bright smile on her face as she rushed to the driver’s side to greet her son.

“Ah Seokjinnie! You never visit anymore, look at you! Are you eating well? You look so thin!” she said as she placed two sonorous kisses on her son, one on each cheek.

“Yah, eomma, we talk on the phone a lot though”

“Wait so who’s the lucky lady you’ve brought home?” you stood kind of awkwardly on the front of the car to greet her with a small bow and a faltering smile, your heart speeding up at the memories of what your life used to be, fingers gripping your bag tighter in an attempt to not run away as soon as her eyes landed on you and her smile fell “Y/N? Seokjinnie, is Y/N really the girl you brought home?”

“Surprise?” Jin said from behind her as she not so subtly let out a huff and entered the house as you tried not to notice how your heart sinked at the sight, surely, you had always known deep down that you were quite the talk of the town amongst the families, with you being a bastard child and all, which was exactly why Seokjin had asked you to pretend to be his girlfriend, so his parents would drop the topic, very much preferring to see his son single rather than married to an out of marriage offspring, which not only made you realise that what you had promised yourself to make Seokjin down his words would never be true, you could never in a million years make his parents love you, and you didn’t calculate just how much it would hurt yourself as you tried.

“You can take the room upstairs, I’ll call you when your sister’s back so we can have dinner together” his mother said as she made her way inside without another word

“So I don’t think your mother likes me” you blurted out as soon as you closed the door to the room “Which I guess, goes exactly as you planned, after this I don’t think they’ll be pestering you to marry”

“Y/N that’s the least of our problems”

“What are you talking about?”

His eyes opened up to emphasize along with his hands dramatically pointing towards the bed “There’s only one bed and I have a bad back so I’m not about to sleep on the floor”

“Well that’s the least you could do Kim, I’m not about to share a bed with you”

“Take the couch?” he said as he pointed to a small couch that faced the window

“Kim Seokjin I’m doing this much for your sorry ass, so unless you want me to go down and tell your mother that all of this is a set up, you take the damn couch”

“Well I never knew you looked that hot while yelling at me, Y/N”

“You’re insufferable”

“Y/N come on, I don’t fit in that couch” he whined at you as you walked towards the bathroom to freshen up

“Do as you please Seokjin, but you’re not sleeping with me”

As if dealing with Seokjin’s mum wasn’t enough, his sister was about to burst your head either from all the questioning or out of spite from the looks she was giving you as you sat across from her on the dinner table

“So Y/N, your sisters never mentioned you dating our Seokjin”

“Oh yeah- it was more of a very private matter, we dated for awhile just to see how it went, right Jinnie?” you said the nickname in a honey dripping voice that fitted the fake scenario you had going on

“Ahh yeah, yeah, Y/N and I, we uh- we like keeping to ourselves”

“And I haven’t seen you at your dad’s company dinners after- well, the incident”

“Seung” their oldest brother said sternly, catching up with her intentions “We’re just glad to see you again, Y/N”

“Thanks”

After dinner, Jin and you walked upstairs saying your goodbyes to the rest of his family to enter the bedroom, separately doing your night routines, you lied on one side of the bed as Seokjin prepped a few blankets and pillows in order to lie on the floor “I was just joking, you know? You could sleep on the other side of the bed” you said, feeling somewhat guilty at how he had taken your past statement as a rule

“I don’t want to make you uncomfortable” he was quick to say, already tossing at being uncomfortable lying on the floor.

“Oh so now you’re being considerate?” you scoffed- sure, Seokjin was kind of a dick, most of the time, but he wasn't half as bad as most people his age and social status, but honestly speaking, if he was so preoccupied on making you uncomfortable, he wouldn’t have even proposed to make you go through this whole ordeal “After what I just had to go through with your sister?”

“Well you kind of accepted to come” he retorted in a soft voice, one you hadn’t listened to him use before, as if over the course of the short dinner time, something had changed in your relationship “A friend doing me a favour, you know?”

“Seokjin…” you trailed off, however as far as you two went back, after news broke that you were somewhat cut off from your father’s heirship, and everyone started treating you cold as ever, you would have thought Jin had gotten the clue “We stopped being friends a long time ago”

“What are you talking about” the night was filled with silence apart from your two whispering voices in the dark as both of you laid there

“Yeah after… that time, we hadn’t talked to each other until now” Describing your relationship with Seokjin was one of the most difficult things to do, while you were still part of the official lineage of your father’s, the Kims had actually even rooted for you to marry Seokjin, whomst you were head over heels at the time, both of you were, but Jin being the good son and heir to a tech emporium, had always disliked the way you stood up against your father and the whole elite thing your families had going on; needles to say, you both completely cut off any strings attached after you proclaimed your despise to the whole wealthy ordeal and you were vanished from your dad’s will.

“I fail to see your point” and for a second you would have loved to believe his soothing voice in the dark, to still be in friendly terms at least, with him, after all this time.

“Nevermind just- goodnight” you said as you turned on your side to cuddle the pillow in between your arms, his soft voice reaching your ears once more and for the last time in the night.

“Goodnight Y/N”

“I’m just going straight to the point here, Y/N what exactly do you plan on achieving by marrying my son?” Jin’s mother said as soon as you came down the stairs, Seokjin having left the room a while back

“Nothing ma’am, we’re just really in love” something inside you twisting at the lie that could have been truth if things were just a tiny bit different than how they were evolving at the time, the words leaving your lips sounding as the mere truth to your ears nonetheless

“I don’t buy that lovebirds facade, Y/N drop the act now” she turned to look directly at you, trying to sound menacing, which, would have worked, had it not been for you handling her for quite some time now, so you just tried your sweetest smile at her “Whatever you and Seokjin had when you were teens, your father and Seokjin’s father called it off”

“I know” you tried to conceal just how much the reminder hurted, the memories flooding into your mind, of you and Jin being engaged even before meeting each other, the good times you both spent together as friends, a few months as something more, then the lonely nights when it was all over and it had seemed like a dream that just wouldn’t ever come true.

“Just so you know, I’m keeping a close eye on you two” were her last words before leaving the kitchen, off to some other place in the house.

“Yes ma’am”

“Hey, Y/N, we’re heading to the beach you coming?” Seokjin asked as he laid his elbow on the counter, you pull him towards you, taking his hand in your smaller one as you watched his mother closing in on you two from the distance before she set her eyes elsewhere

He leaned in to you, whispering “What was that for?”

“Your mother knows something’s up” you shortly answered

“Y/N, I didn’t know you were coming” Seokjin’s father looked just as he did the last time you saw him years ago, his face contorting into an incredule one as he saw you descend from one of the cars that took you to the beach “Are you and your father on a better place now?”

“Oh no sir, I’m accompanying Seokjin” if he hadn’t believed your presence at first, he surely wasn’t believing the words leaving your mouth; Seokjin’s father had always had a soft spot for you, my hardest working tobe daughter-in-law, he had once said, and even after you and Seokjin’s engagement was called off, mainly by your father even when Jin’s mum said otherwise, his dad had offered you a place in his company’s headboard after you graduated, which you politely denied, knowing that someday, Seokjin would be CEO and you would have to work under his name directly.

“Seokjin? my son?” you nodded “What has Seokjin ever done to deserve you as his fiancee?”

“The same thing I keep repeating myself” you mutter more to yourself than for him to hear

“What was that?”

“Oh, nothing!”

The weekend with Jin’s family was as monotonous as you remembered them to be, with family dinner after a day at the beach, plus the constant scrutinising eye of his mother on you two, which made you both hold hands more than the normal amount a real couple should, only to have to spend the night at a lonely bed.

“Jin, I’m cold”

“Well you sure aren’t planning on also taking my blanket from me, you’ve taken my bed already” he joked from his made up bed on the floor, which in hindsight, was probably even colder for him than for you

“Jin”

“No can’t do”

“Come cuddle me then” the words had left your mouth before your brain could even complete to process them, the situation all too familiar from years before, like muscle memory, your brain had just dwelled into a common relationship between the two, too easy to slip away from.

“Ohhh you’re already falling for worldwide handsome” he joked, only you knowing the truth his words hid behind them and you felt your face heat up, somehow deciding against backing up.

“Shut up just-” torn between spilling your “new found” feeling for him that were remains from a past love or keeping it the bare minimum “I’m cold”

“Fine, I’ll be there” he paused, and you knew him all too well to know that he was wearing a stuid grin on his face, wondering if by any chance the innocent banter had a deeper meaning for him too as he added “Almost fiancee”

You could hear a shuffling of blankets and him throwing his pillows on the bed before he literally jumped on it, whole body hovering over yours, his eyes glistening as they bore into yours as he kept his body weight on his extended hands, a familiar twist in your heart at the distance, his lips on yours in the blink of an eye for less than a second before he rolled off to the empty side of the bed

“What was that for?!” you panicked, not loud enough for anyone to hear but him

“I don’t know it felt right”

As you turned to confront him, the air suddenly didn’t feel as cold as before, a warmth enveloping you both that felt like home, like this place and time was exactly where you were supposed to be all along, your hands coming up to caress the side of his face as his larger ones tugged you closer to him effortlessly without breaking eye contact; both of your faces coming closer to each other, noses brushing against each other before your lips found his, an all too familiar setting for the both of you, everything feeling as if both of your lives had been a movie that had been unwillingly paused and someone had pressed play just as you were close like this, feeling as if all those years apart were nothing when together, his hot tongue lapping your lower lip as you granted him entrance, tongues dancing with one another as time seemed to slow down, a gasp escaping your lips as his cold hand found its way into your pajama pants “sorry, is this okay?” he whispered against your lips, to which you agreed, your own hands scurrying under his top to caress his torso, his lips finding your sweet spot under your ear all too easily, as if he had never forgotten about it, his pants straining by each passing second as you felt him grow harder against your thigh, hand going under the covers to palm him over the fabric, which made him exhale a moan in your ear, feeling yourself grow wetter at the display, all too familiar, yet not enough, you lunged yourself over him to straddle his hips, clothed core rubbing against his covered length in a futile attempt to ease the tension “ah- you’re sure about this, Y/N?” he found himself checking in with you before you both lost yourselves to pleasure “a hundred percent, Jin”.

“Seokjin I can’t keep doing this” you turned to him, eyes panicked and wide on the verge of tears, his mind racing a hundred miles per second in search for the right words that would make you stay, he had already lost you before, and even though things didn’t quite turned out the way he had planned, he wasn’t about to let you slip away again “I can’t face them again, after all they’ve put me through, Seokjin, they took away my dreams just because I wouldn’t pace around like the rest of them, this is your life, not mine I’m so sorry” you had ran out of his grip and out the door before his brain could even begin to process it, blinking a few too many times before he called out to you

“Seokjinnie! What’s taking you so long?” his mother had gathered the guests in the garden for the grand entrance of the newly announced engagement, tired of being kept waiting, walking up to him

Summary: There was a certain gang that wasn’t able to come to their first meeting. But after some weeks, it was time for them to show up.

Word Count: 5335

Notes: Okay so this is the first appearance of X-terminate <3 <3 I know it took a while before they showed up but considering how serious they are compared to the LA5T 5HOT5, they’re pretty much more busy so they’re out on missions a lot!! Also... yes... it’s a long time before you see them, but I like keeping them pretty myterious and stuff like that but fjkbdf I hope you like it !!!!

A phone began ringing in an empty dark room. It’s been several days ever since anyone took a step in the house, and there were several missed calls from different numbers. People should have expected that they weren’t always at their “warm little home” since they have some business to do. People never dared to steal their attention, because they wouldn’t be able to tell if they were going to shoot them or not.

“Fear is the best solution.”

That was a line which their leader always told them. A dark grin on his face as he chuckled softly in front of the people they captured. He wasn’t the kind of person to show mercy to traitors, after all. If you dared betray his trust, he wouldn’t mind tearing off some skin of your body to make you realize that mistake you did.

There was one thing about him that everyone knew and that was...

He hated traitors.

A couple of people were found inside the Kinokuni house because they had to do their hiding in a different location for a moment. Well, actually, the bigger reason was probably the fact that her parents began worrying sick about her because she wasn’t seen for a while- but they still talked to her through a phone. The visitors didn’t enjoy the words they heard from outside the room.

“You’re supposed to be the perfect head. You’re not supposed to be running off without telling us, Nene.”

Nene was part of a family who had to follow tradition, and for the first time in her life- she didn’t follow it. But it was for a good reason, and this was to ensure her safety more. If she stayed inside the Kinokuni house for a long amount of time, she might die the next morning on her bed. Even if so, her parents never understood.

“Will you not do anything, Greedy Shit?” Kuga was oddly quiet, his voice being really soft so the people on the other side of the wall can hear. “If Mister All Smiles were in her place, I’ll bang the door open then go “Hey bitches if he stayed here he would have died!” or some shit like that.” He reenacted the scene, even lifting a middle finger at the person in front of him.

Eizan didn’t speak up, all he did was sigh loudly. “You fucking idiot, if I were to do that then her parents would have cut off the deal. You shouldn’t go against the person you’re making the deal with.” He explained. “Even if I wanted to point out the truth, this isn’t the correct time when they’re completely angered because of worry.”

Kuga rolled his eyes before leaning on the wall. “Man, I pity her for having someone like you. You have to go out of your business kind of thinking for once. This is why you’re called Greedy Shit.” He may have not cared too much about the female, but he still disliked people who never tried to hear another person’s side.

The side of the house was quiet, and the negotiator began looking around before trying to bring up a solution. “Well... I master the techniques of making people hear you out, if you all want to, then I could speak up...” He raised his right hand, even if he hesitated. “I might not know Miss Kinokuni Nene too well... But I think this is unfair on her part, and I would want to... you know... Try and help.”

“Canción, you may do that after Nene comes out of her room. This is a formal matter.” Their planner started to give her own opinion. “Even if some of us really care about her, it’s best if we stay in place. We shouldn’t disturb family matters.” She may have not liked the situation, but she believed it was best to tolerate it. “Once she’s out, we can talk to them. We shouldn’t budge in.”

Without them noticing, someone went inside the room and they all had a surprise expression on their face.

“Mister All Smiles, you fucking dumbass!”

The door in front of them got shut and everyone didn’t know how to respond to what he did.

“Right after I said that...” Lotus placed her two of her fingers on the bridge of her nose. “Whatever. I think Mister Isshiki Satoshi knows what to do. He does know about her most, no?” A figure slowly opened the door to have a little peek and he was only pulled back by their planner. “Leader, what are you doing?”

“... I was curious to see what’s happening but you’re completely right. If someone knew her well, it would probably be him.” He began speaking up before fixing his collar. “They are... Well, childhood friends after all.”

After a few moments, the pair ended up going out first and Nene started to walk away by herself. Without a moment to waste, Eizan who was just about to place a cigarette in his mouth, began following her. He, for the first time, didn’t know what to do.

“Leave me alone.” She says this bluntly, walking away from her protector. “I don’t want to talk to anyone right now.” She tried her best to avoid any eye contact with him and the man behind her only caught up to her and he was able to grab her by the arm.

“They’re the wrong ones. Don’t let them get to you, woman.” He didn’t force her to look at her, but he did want her to hear what he had to say. “I’m informed about how your family goes, and I have to personally apologize to them myself for not thinking about their...” He shrugged. “Thoughts.” In reality, he didn’t care about any of their feelings. As long as he got something what he wanted, he was okay with whatever happens. Lying was common in his kind of life anyway. “Maybe it’s my fault, maybe it’s not. Who fucking cares? You’re still alive anyway.”

Nene pulled her hand away but she didn’t continue walking. “... You’re not at fault either.” These were her last words before she continued to walk away and Eizan was left there, thinking that whatever she wished was the best thing to do.

An unknown number began calling the phone of the other Clan Head and he immediately answered. “Isshiki Satoshi, who is it?” He didn’t sound as happy as usual, and this might have been because of the conversation he had to have with the parents of his friend. At least they believed whatever he said was true. “If you’re not going to answer my question, I have to end this call.”

A chuckle was heard from the phone. “Are you threatening me, Isshiki-kun?” The voice was rather raspy, and it sounded that he was completely tired. “I went home from stealing lives and I’m greeted with so much... negative feelings.” He sounded like what he did was bittersweet. “It makes me want to bring down more people. Maybe... to you know, make them burn in hell.”

Isshiki wasn’t unfazed by the person who called, and he clearly knew who it was. There was only one person who could speak so violently with having a fun voice in his tone. “You’re Death, aren’t you?” The happy tone returned to him. “I gave you a couple of calls some weeks ago! I hope you were able to hear all the voice messages!”

“You’re... terribly scary switching your sides so easily.”

“I can’t believe I got these words from a well-known murderer!”

A laugh escaped from the mouth of the “murderer”. “Oh wow. Anyway, yes. I did receive all of them... We could meet wherever. We’re free for a week, Kiyoshi-kun is way too injured to actually go on missions... Oh wait, nevermind what I just said! It’s best to meet us inside headquarters.”

“Hm... I’ve only seen you in Aroon’s house a couple of times.” He tried to think of every moment he talked to the mysterious figure. “But I think I’m down to meet you there! Just inform me about the location... oh and, are you alright with some people besides me? I think it’s a must for me to bring them!”

“A must? Really? Yeah sure, whatever. Just be sure they’re not going to do anything against me... or else...” He paused for a moment, and if Isshiki was able to see him right now, he might have one single drip of sweat crawl down his face. It wasn’t a sight to smile at. A normal person would have backed away, especially if he had his favorite knife at hand. “They’ll pay.”

“Well...” Isshiki suddenly heard some the door bang open, and he ended up talking in a quicker pace. “See you later then!”

“Wait, Isshiki-”

The phone was down before he could say his next words. There was a person with a pretty irritated expression on his face. “Damn, if we were in Aroon’s place, I would have been shouting at you! I was calling for you a couple of times and I knocked but you weren’t responding!” He stuck his tongue out. “The ever-behold Kinokuni elders were calling for dinner! Everyone fucking looked at me when they asked who’d call you!”

Isshiki laughed nervously before scratching the back of his head. “I apologize! I promise that I’ll be more observant next time!” He had a smile on his face and Kuga huffed before dragging him out of the room. “Oh? Is it their specialty? Soba?” He asked this and from there, the conversation only continued.

“Your parents finally let you out again?” The tallest male brought up inside the group and Nene only nodded her head slightly. “That’s good. I was worried that they wouldn’t trust Eizan Etsuya to protect you anymore... Maybe us too.” He did act like the dad figure, even to the people who was only new to the group.

“They did. They only kept me in for three days.” She explained. “They also understood what Isshiki said. They were even more convinced after Eizan, Canción and Lotus spoke to them.” She told her the gist of what happened. “Added to that, who else could they trust if they ended up breaking the deal?”

“That is true.” Sukiru began thinking about the situation. After the whole incident that went on the public news paper, people began being careful with who they choose.” He clearly knew the incident, but he didn’t think that Nene would have known it too.

“... I heard about it from my parents. The case of the Milas family, I’m assuming.” Nene was someone who had to be informed about the current situations and risks, so her parents always told her what happened in the public. “The parents were found dead, one sister went missing and the other was in the hospital but she left with no trace. People believe she committed suicide because of her “Last Letter” found in her hospital room. People have given up finding her.”

Sukiru shut his lips tight. “Yes. The murder scene was morbid, and they never ended up revealing the faces of the family in public. But we should never bring that up, people might believe that we could have done it if they overhear us.”

“I wouldn’t be talking it out of nowhere. It reminds me how dangerous my life is, and I’ll rather not think about it.” She looked down to her feet. “I also don’t enjoy talking about the dead, I want to respect them.” Even if Nene didn’t show fear most of the time, there were moments where the topic of death made her feel uneasy.

“We don’t need to talk about it.” A smile was present on the face of his. “I wouldn’t want you to feel any negative emotion when you’re around us. Make yourself feel at home.”

“Hey Daddy Wolverine, Misses Eizan.” A man stepped inside the room, a grin on his face and the two only faced him at the same time.

“... Don’t call me that.”

“Well, you see... Isshiki wants to meet someone.” He begins ignoring their words. “Someone who I know very well and... Trust me, I fully believe in him... But you Misses Eizan, should be careful.” It was the first time of Nene to see the gang leader of LA5T 5HOT5 to seem so nervous. “... He’s... dangerous.”

Someone else came in the room, and he tried to observe the gestures of Nene. After a few moment, he walked away to tap the shoulder of the person who protected her. “Eizan, I think Miss Kinokuni looks pretty nervous.” He brings this up and the person he talked to only raised an eyebrow. “I think Aroon might have informed her about who we’re meeting later.”

He didn’t have anything against Canción, so all he did was stare at him. “... Thank you for the information, I guess?” He shrugged, not knowing who they were meeting either. “I don’t know who we’re fucking seeing. District 1 is one of the most dangerous places to be in. I don’t trust whoever is there. We better have our defenses up if we’re going there.”

“We will.” A smile was on the lips of Canción, and it was strange to find someone this calm when there was a risk of death. “The person who we’re meeting already eliminated all possible danger in that District! Their leader wanted to claim that territory.”

Eizan did not comprehend why he was so calm in this situation, he actually began believing that it might be because he was a negotiator, who had to hide any feelings- or it might have been that it was someone who he already trusts. “... I will believe in you with those words.” Seconds later, Eizan was found walking off to the place where Nene stood, so he could calm her down even with the littlest ways.

“God, I know you’re all friendly but- How can we fully trust them?! You won’t even mention their gang name to any of us but Aroon!” A blonde began yelling at the person he was protecting. “I know you’re all chill and shit, but we shouldn’t be too risky, Jesus! What if the gang we’re meeting is planning to kills us?! I know allies are important but at least tell us who they are!”

Isshiki was surprised to see the Yakuza member to panic this much. He blinked a couple of times before tilting his head. “But you’re the best Yakuza member in the world... I don’t think you should be worried!” He tried to calm the person in front of him down and Kuga only spun to face the wall and slam his head on it. “Kuga! Don’t do that! Are you okay?”

“I know I’m the fucking best, but that fucking District... They’re fucking terrible. I remember taking a step in and I was greeted by my damn suit getting fucking red all over it!” He began pointing at his suit. “It was their fucking blood! But this is my new suit, so I can’t fucking make this covered in red!”

“You bought another one?” Isshiki attempted to change the topics, and he quickly fell for this.

“Yeah, so at least if it was my last day to live, I’ll look new and drop-dead fun-fucking-tastic, right?”

The allied gangs and the two people who they aimed to protect ended up in a ghost town kind of Distict, and this was a surprise to see for the Yakuza Family Gang Leaders. The last time they’ve been here, there were a couple of people who actually aimed for their head, or were ready to have a duel to death with them.

Lotus only looked around before looking over at Gaia. “Let’s do this as planned. In case anything happens, please go in front. You have the fastest reaction when it comes to seeing people move around, so if there is any foreign object moving, be sure to give us a sign.”

“Understood, Lotus.” With that command, she instantly went in front of the group and prepared her gun. “If I am able to spot something, I’ll just shoot and you would already know what that mean.”

“Of course we would, but thank you for telling us.” Lotus knew that whatever she decided would be the best for the group. “Aroon, you’re the best with guns. You know all the codes of our gang, so if you hear Gaia say a certain code, you know what to do. Canción, in case there are any stranger who approaches us, be sure to convince them that we can do this in a peaceful manner. Sukiru, if several people suddenly come in- you know the cue.” She wasn’t holding anything but her gun. “I don’t need my papers or pens for this plan, all I need is my gun.”

Everyone was listening to what the planner had to say because in the past few weeks, they all came out alive because of her plans. This was to the point that even Nene believed in her with her whole heart, and Eizan could never look down at her anymore. “And what do we do, Miss Bunny-Bun?”

“Don’t ever call me that.” She glances at Kuga for a moment. “But all you have to do is watch out for any suspicious people because you’re the main protectors of those two next Clan heads over there.”

“And Kuga...” The gang leader smiled, but it wasn’t no ordinary kind of smile he would usually give. “I hope you know my gun is out and I can shoot your fucking head.”

Aroon looked away from the golden eyes of the gang leader and he felt how pissed off he was with the energy surrounding him. “... Alright, sheesh Stupid Red Hair Clips. You don’t need to... look at me like that! You don’t need to be jealous!”

Kaoru twitched before he poked the muzzle of the gun on his neck. “I’m not fucking jealous. It’s just me being a protective gang leader, deep shit. I know we’re friends but let’s not get too friendly here, got it?”

“Leader, I think you should go some steps away from Kuga for a moment!” Canción smiled innocently before he pulled Aroon away. “Let’s cool you off for a moment!” Even if the situation was bad, Canción always knew how to calm the gang leader down and he only sighed before shifting his attention away. “But... I think we should go to the gang’s house now... We might be late if we keep still!”

“Yeah. I know...” Aroon starts to cross his arms. “I do know that he hates people being late, so we should hurry before he gets angry. But we do have a secret weapon though so he wouldn’t get mad.”

Canción began laughing a bit before eyeing the female who was in front of them, walking ahead, turning at a different direction every once in a while. “I thought he had a weakness for you too?”

“What? Me?” The gang leader waved his hands around. “No fucking way! He wouldn’t kill me, but... He’d still never hold back his words if he were to talk with me. If he did have another weakness it’d be...” He went near Canción to whisper to his ear. “Matchmaking. It’s pretty much a secret until he sees it happening.”

Once they arrived in the area, the person in front knocked on the door, and she was doing it in Morse Code. After a few seconds, there was an entrance to the house. The female who opened the door had shades on and her white hair was tied to a ponytail.

“What are you doing here?” She sounded as if she was giving herself authority. Kuga carefully prepared his gun but Isshiki lightly nudged his hand, signalling him to not lift up his gun.

“We’re here to see your leader.” Gaia quickly replied, even looking up at the girl.

“Hah?!” The woman they just met seemed pretty intimidating, and from there- Nene could already feel the difference between this gang and LA5T 5HOT5.

“We’re here to meet Death.”

When that name was brought up Kuga brought his hands to his face and Eizan instantly faced Aroon.

“Why did you not tell us this on the fucking first place?!”

“We know him already, you shit!

Nene paused before turning around to look at the two men glaring at the gang leader. “Death?” She questioned the name, but she did remember that they all had these kinds of code names. “Who are they?”

“Remember we were supposed to meet another gang but they were unable to come?” Eizan tries to explain to Nene despite glaring at the male who didn’t tell him which gang it was on the first place. “Death is the gang leader of X-terminate. We have met him before so I wonder why the fuck this bitch didn’t tell us who it was.”

Before the argument could continue, they were allowed to enter the house. They had to follow whatever instructions the female had to avoid the possibility of triggering a trap. “The name’s Bullet.”

Everyone inside the group took note of her name and Gaia began speaking to her. “We’ve known her for a while, she makes weapons for the gang.”

Bullet only gave a brief nod. “You got that right. I might be a person who usually makes weapons, but don’t underestimate me.” She warned them before looking back for a moment. “I know how to use them too.” She unlocked the door in front of them, and this started to reveal the rest of the members of the gang.

“We might be consisting of 6 members only, but you have to know that we’re a group who people fear.” Bullet reminded before going to her spot. “This is why we’re called X-terminate in the damn first place.”

“Thank you Bullet for giving us such an excellent appearance~!” The man who was in the middle gave a small grin, his red eyes dull but his expression looking very excited. “I didn’t expect to see you all here. And oh, what do we have here?” He zoomed in closer before patting the head of Nene. “Oh! Gasp! A female!”

“Death, you dumbass. You don’t say gasp out loud.” A person with red hair and blue eyed looked pretty irritated. “Come back here, we should formally present ourselves.”

The grin on the face of the person who moved in close never left as he went back to place. “My, oh my! Who does that sweetheart belong to?”

Eizan didn’t want to respond to the male, but Kuga had the biggest grin on his face. “Grim Reaper, she’s engaged to Greedy Shit over here!”

“... Engaged...?” The smile was exchanged with a surprised reaction. “Oh god. I was right, a fellow person with glasses is your type...”

“Shut up, Death.”

Suddenly, someone was close to Eizan’s face, a knife directly at his neck and a gun thrown down to the ground. “This is my house. Respect me, fucker.”

Nene’s hear beat raised, and she wanted to try and separate the two but she was stopped by Aroon. “It... isn’t the best to go against him.” He muttered. “He can get very violent... He wouldn’t hesitate to slice your neck more because he doesn’t even know you.”

“Death.” A girl with black hair tugged him by the shirt. “Calm down.”

He seemed to ease down almost immediately when he heard that voice. “Hm... How cruel. You know I can’t deny you.” He placed his knife back to its hiding place, but he didn’t look as lively as he did back then. “X-terminate. Please present yourselves.”

“I’ve already presented myself.” Bullet brought up before pointing at the rest. “So it’s their turn now.”

A person who had a masculine figured rolled their eyes. “Right, you were the one who opened the door. But I have nothing much to say... The only new person here is the two people who we have to protect. Well, I’m Cross. That’s it.”

“That was really quick Cross. Did you want me to present myself this fast?” The person who spoke had a large and round figure, but he was proud to have it. “I am Target and I came from a long line of my family’s Yakuza family.” He showed so much pride in himself just by the way he speaks. “My defense skills are undeniably the best out there! I am living up to my family name!”

“Don’t take too much of the shine~!” Someone butted in the conversation, and with how much he was sparkling- the darkness of the room seemed to light up. “Shot, remember that blessed name! A man who switches from gang to gang, I am sure everyone inside the whole Yakuza has heard me before!” He winked at the visitors before pushing the girl who was at his side. Her expression only darkening.

“Raven. I have nothing else to say. Leader?”

The person who may have induced fear inside Nene on their first meeting didn’t have any happiness present on his face- he looked pretty pissed and the eyebags underneath his eyes did not make anyone feel safe. “Death.” He brought out his knife once again, but this time, he placed it near his mouth. “My name and something that I cause.”

Nene was right... They were completely different from the ones they’ve met so far, and she couldn’t help but wonder... could she really trust them?

“If you’re scared of us, I think it’s best to leave.”

“I’m not...”

“Don’t lie to me, sweetheart. It makes me tempted to... shut your mouth by making you choke on your own blood.” He warned. “Be honest with me. Are you scared?” Nene became quiet for a moment and she didn’t have an answer to him. “I don’t care if you’re engaged to Eizan and I fully believe that you’re his perfect match, once you piss me off, it’s over for you. Did Aroon not warn you?”

“Stop scaring her, you fuck.”

“Eizan. You say something against me, I’ll do something worse than killing you.” He barked. “Maybe I can kill the person you’re protecting. Ruins your reputation and you get no money for protecting a girl with your life.”

“Once you’re in his house, it’s his rules.” Cross explained. “We have two, one of them is no betraying, the other one is no lies. I think it’s best to follow them if you want to survive.”

Isshiki only stared at the gang leader of X-terminate. “I know his rules but, can you at least be nicer to her?” He starts to glare at him. “I don’t think it’s nice doing this to a person you just met.”

Death glared back at Isshiki, before squinting. “Isshiki, listen... I respect you, but I swear to god, but I fucking do what I want. People who are scared make the most stupid decisions.” He explained. “And now she knows about my gang, she can report us anytime she wishes, and she’d probably do that out of fear.”

“Can everyone shut up for a moment?”

Death closed his mouth before staring at the girl who eased him down for a moment. “I might care for you greatly, Gaia... but do you think telling me to shut up is a bit too much?”

“First off, no. Secondly, can you listen to me?” Gaia sighed. “How can she not fear you if all you do is evoke fear from her?” She had to reply to him logically. “I know that you hate trusting others in first meeting, but you have to let this slide for once.”

“And why are you telling me this?”

“We’re here to be allies.” She sighed. “Not to bring fear to people, Death. I know this is your way to see if someone is worthy... But please bring that out for a moment. How can she not fear you if she believes you have all the capabilities to slice her neck, especially that there’s a bounty for her head? Can we... start talking to each other, like normal people? Like the people who we used to be?”

The room went silent for a moment, and the dull eyes of Death changed for a bit. “... I guess we can do that for a moment... But I’ll never be this easy with anyone else, understood?”

“Of course.” She made an agreement. “You know everyone in this room, correct? So only Misses Eizan needs to be considered.”

“If that’s what you say... Then I shall obey. I have too much things I haven’t done for you, so it’s best to do things for you now.” He suddenly started to move away before opening another door. “Let’s discuss things more... civilized, shall we?”

Nene felt like she could breathe again, and Eizan was still glaring at the male. “Don’t worry, Misses Eizan.” Gaia began talking. “Once you meet a man like him, you’ll never fear anyone in your whole life.”

“What do you mean?” Nene wondered what she meant. She never felt fear towards a person, but this might only because of the circumstance she’s in.

“Once you overcome your fear of him... You’ll probably be a fearless badass. You’ll be able to hold up your gun and shoot at anyone when needed.”

coworker calls me “mama,” why are employers and job candidates held to different standards, and more

It’s five answers to five questions. Here we go…

1. Coworker calls me “mama” because I’m pregnant

I am currently 18 weeks pregnant with my first child. I work remotely on a team made up entirely of remote workers. It’s a small team of all women, all of whom have kids or even grandkids, and we are very close and friendly. It’s definitely a professional environment (and being the youngest member of the team by far, I try to stay very professional) but we also share stories about our weekends, pictures of our pets, etc. and I like that.

I told my coworkers the news a couple weeks ago and they are all very excited for me. Each meeting or call seems to start with a report on how the baby and I are doing. I am totally comfortable with this and it has been an easy pregnancy, so it’s been simple enough to give a little soundbite that I’m feeling fine and everything is going well without getting into details of ultrasound pictures or symptoms.

One coworker is very nice but she is a little awkward. She keeps asking me “How is mama feeling?” Alison, I HATE being called mama, even among friends and family. It feels infantilizing and puts an emphasis on my new role as a mother which is only one part of my life, especially with coworkers. If this were a friend, I would have no problem telling them not to call me mama, but it’s a coworker so I have mostly just ignored it. I don’t mind ignoring it either, but maybe that’s weird too! Any advice or scripts for handling this with a minimum of awkwardness?

Ugh, yes, it’s weird, but there’s always someone who seems to want to do this.

It’s perfectly to say, “Oh, please stick with Beth. Thanks!” Then follow up with a subject change to minimize the awkwardness, if you want to.

If that doesn’t work (although hopefully it will), then you may have to repeat it: “I’m still Beth. Please call me that instead.”

For what it’s worth … you might be totally fine continuing to share those regular updates in meetings and calls, but you also might reach a point in your pregnancy where you want more privacy (especially if you have any complications). It can be easier to shut that down now than try to do it down the road — so it might be worth a “from here on, I’ll let you know if anything changes.” Or not — some people are fine with this level of sharing — it’s just something to keep in mind.

2. Why are employers and candidates held to different standards in hiring?

Why do recruiters do the opposite of what is expected by candidates, then cry that there is a talent shortage? For example, I am expected to customize a resume and cover letter for each specific job application to ensure that either the person reading my application can see how I’m qualified, or a computer algorithm doesn’t automatically reject it. Meanwhile, I get extremely generic messages from recruiters (regarding relevant positions) on LinkedIn only that my profile “intrigues them.” Why should I reply when they made zero effort to customize their message to me, and why do recruiters think this is acceptable when they expect applicants to do the opposite?

Well, you don’t need to reply to recruiters who send you obvious form letters if you don’t want to! Those recruiters tend to be going for numbers over quality, and in a lot of industries (not all, but many) might not be worth your time anyway.

But your larger point stands: Candidates are expected to put energy into things that employers don’t. Part of that is because recruiters need to convey the same message to enormous numbers of people, and form letters make sense for that. (It doesn’t make sense to write a personal rejection note to all 200+ people you might be rejecting for a single position; a form letter is going to convey what needs to be conveyed pretty effectively.) And part of it is that your materials will actually be more effective when you customize them, so it’s in your own interests to do it.

But part of it is also convention. There are a bunch of double standards in hiring that are rooted more in convention than anything else. For example, your interviewer can be late to the interviewer or check her phone in the middle of it, while it’s typically going to be really frowned upon for you to do that as a candidate. And you certainly couldn’t get away with sending employers a list of instructions for interviewing you or simply announce the time you will meet with them, while some employers do exactly that.

So yeah, there are double standards. Some are eye-rolly but not worth the capital it would take to fight them. Others are worth pushing back on.

3. I want to ask for a promotion four months into my new job

In negotiating my current role, the compensation I was offered was deliberately anchored to my previous package, a simple 10% on top of my previous salary. Frustratingly, my recruiter revealed this without my permission, which I feel was unfair because firstly, my previous company had implemented a company-wide pay freeze for over a year. I was told I was deserving of both a higher salary and promotion but they simply didn’t have the budget. Secondly, during the period I was searching for a new role to get the promotion I desired, I was offered senior roles more than once. However, I felt the companies weren’t the best environments for me to develop so I declined.

When I was negotiating my current package, I did bring up these points, but it came down to them simply not being willing to hire me in a senior role as they didn’t think I was quite there, so they refused to budge on either level or salary, adding that they expected me to progress fairly rapidly. I figured something was better than nothing so accepted regardless.

As my probation period comes to an end, I believe I’ve demonstrated myself to be performing at a senior level and would like to again request the promotion. I like my job and don’t want to go through the upheaval of starting somewhere new after just four months, but I can’t help but feel like I’m being short-changed, which is making me feel very dejected, especially as I see peers with less experience leapfrog my progress. How do I broach this subject during my probation review and find an outcome that suits us both?

Oooh, I don’t think you can. You can’t really ask for or expect a promotion after only four months, unless there are very unusual circumstances (like that you ended up doing a different job than the one you were hired for). They told you clearly four months ago that they didn’t think you were at a senior level, and it’s unlikely they’ll have changed that assessment in just four months. Plus, you accepted their offer for this role at this level — it would be operating in bad faith to resent being expected to stay in it now, when it’s been such a short time. Typically a year would be the earliest you could bring this up.

What you can do, though, is to ask your boss about how things are going generally, and whether she thinks you could realistically be on a path to move up to a senior level in time, and whether it’s something she’d be open to talking about once you’ve been there a year.

4. Should we send a graduation announcement to my husband’s boss?

My 45-year-old husband started his current job four years ago, at the same time he started college. He already had years of experience in his field and the college degree was a personal challenge. He graduates in May.

His company is small, less than 50 employees scattered across the country, and the CEO is his grandboss. The CEO’s wife heads up the home office with a small group. All other employees travel extensively for work. My husband has been pushing for a promotion after several successful large-scale projects. He’s had a small promotion and a raise since he’s been there, and they’ve paid for him to take several professional development courses and obtain certifications. His degree relates directly to the work he has been gunning for (but is not required to do said work).

I think we should send his boss and grandboss graduation announcements as a kind of nudge towards that goal. My husband is concerned it’s too personal but he’s on the fence. If it makes a difference, the announcements are standard fair, no photos, but have the chancellor’s crest for the university. As an idea of the company culture, they send out signed cards from the CEO and his wife and gifts to employees for most major holidays (typically things like company logo wear, specialty food items, and restaurant gift cards). He’s on a first-name basis with his boss and the CEO’s wife, but when speaking about/to the CEO it’s (Full Name). I certainly wouldn’t send them a baby or wedding announcement, but I feel this directly relates to his job. What’s your advice?

I wouldn’t, because a lot of people feel obligated to give gifts in response to graduation announcements (or read that expectation into them). I’d rather see him just send them both a note with the news, including thanks to them for supporting him in that work if they did (and definitely if they paid for any of his courses). But ultimately your boss knows the culture there best, and you and I should both defer to him on what feels right!

5. Putting Klingon fluency on a CV

I am a polyglot and like learning new languages. My current count is six (two fluent, one semi-fluent, three basics). A wonderful part of my CV, which many friends and employers agree, is a world map where I have every country highlighted where a language I know is spoken, and it easily covers a third of the world.

Now I started learning Klingon on Duolingo for fun (they also have High Valyrian), and my level of understanding is getting comparative to other languages I can understand. Is this a thing I could put on my CV, or would it only appear negatively?

I wouldn’t list Klingon on its own without other languages (unless you were a field where it would clearly be a plus, although I’m having trouble thinking of what those might be), but if you’ve already got a language map on there, I don’t think it would be a problem to add it. That said, I’m not convinced it’s going to strengthen your candidacy in any appreciable way; you clearly already have impressive language skills. But some hiring managers will see it as a fun thing that shows personality.

(I would not include that map if this were a resume — i.e., only one or two pages — unless you’re applying for jobs where languages are a central focus, but CVs are longer and I’m assuming you have the space to do it.)

Churchill Car Insurance Problem?

Had accident which was my fault in Nov 08, hit a van in rear that stopped suddenly going through a roundabout (less than 5mph) and his trailer hitch ball went into my radiator and damaged the hood, grill and radiator. Car was 1996 Honda in very reasonable condition, MOT'd and all in good service despite its 125,000 mileage, new tyres, exhaust, battery, and clean throughout. Had fully comprehensive insurance with 50 deductable, loaner car and legal support so paid to be protected. When car was collected from accident, collecting garage said at that time that due to the mileage my car would not be repaired. However it took 5 to 6 weeks for the insurance examiner to determine that my car was beyond repair, so I did without a car all that time. Despite repeated phone calls to them, they never called me back as their examiner was on holiday. Then when we finally agree that a price of 500 for my car in January 08 and that took some haggling, the cheque never and so I started chasing them down in early February. I am then informed that I did not disclose a speeding violation on my application and they would have to listen to the tapes of my applying to verify this. Again this took several weeks, and I again had to pursue them for an answer to which they then said I had applied on the internet so no record of a phone conversation. The internet application was misleading, asking for what I believed was 3 years worth of offenses. I've only ever had 2 speeding offenses in my entire life - both speed cameras, just over the limit. The first was at 6 a.m. and I passed a bus pulling over to stop and as I passed it got flashed. The second on the day I found my dad had days to live and I was rushing to catch a flight, and as in both instances was doing 42 mph in a 30 mph zone for a very short period. Nonetheless, I was speeding and paid my fines. I wrote to the insurance company and apologised for not telling them of the other speeding ticket from 4 years and 9 months earlier as I forgot about it. But I admitted it, and apologised in writing. Then then came back to me saying that there would be additional premium to pay before I would get paid for my car. Well, its October 08, and I finally got a letter from the insurers saying they are not paying me as I failed to pay the additional premium requested and they were not going to renew my policy. I have never been asked even after repeated letters to them how much the additional premium was, and what I should do. No replies. I have asked for my car back which they agreed to pay for, and now they state there is nothing they can do, and it is their final decision. I went to the financial ombudsman and unbelieveably DID NOT get a reply from them. I've even spoken to one of their survey staff who tells me that they are incredibly busy and it was probably put aside and not dealt with. I'm at a total loss as to where I stand and how to pursue this without spending more than the accident and car was worth. I've written to their data protection officer and obtained copies of all documentation pertaining to this, so by their records can verify all this information quite clearly. Finally, I maintained my cool with them at all times. Never once did I raise my voice or become unprofessional with them. My questions are: 1. Can I legally request my car back as it has never been paid for? 2. Were they taking money for policy on a car they knew that through mileage alone, they would never pay for loaner car, or to have repaired? 3. This has meant over 30 letters and more phone calls than that to deal with, and rarely do they call you back or reply at all. Can I claim for this time and distress? 4. Am I totally wasting my time? Injury wise, I have whiplash which thankfully, is going away now. My car, according to their adjuster, is going to be claimed as totaled. So, my car is valued at 7400, and repairs just from visual inspection, are 7015. So they are going the totaled route as its cheaper for them. After they buy the car from me, they will sell it to salvage, expect to get 2k from it, and only be out 5400 instead of a full cost of repairs. So I've had the car for a year and half, taken out on a 5yr car loan. I still owe 12k on it. After they cut a check to the lean holder, I'm still responsible for 5k on that loan. The bank and my insurance at the time didn't offer gap insurance. Stupid of me, I let my current policy expire to search around for a more affordable policy. I kept procrastinating, and the accident happened with me having no insurance. Lucky he hit me and is at fault. I'm trying to see what my options are. I've gone to the liable company's website and see their basic plan for my state, law requires 25k in property liability for at fault accidents, plus medical etc. So I'm wondering what should I expect from the lady handling this claim. I'm not fooled when she called me yesterday and said that she is here to work with and for me. Saying that there is probably a lot of talk about lawyers, just know they will take 30-40% of you settlement.
