Who Is Rikuo’s True Foil?

Each of the three Nura commanders have a pretty clear narrative foil, someone who is embodies everything they aren’t and serves as their main enemy… at least, the first two do.

Nurarihyon is hotblooded and ambitious, building up his clan in only 100 years, and lives largely for the intoxicating feeling of love he gets from being around Youhime, while Hagoromo-Gitsune is scheming and methodical, taking around many centuries to bolster in preparation for the Nue’s revival, and feeds off the darkness and hatred of the capital.

Rihan is a beautiful man (undoubtedly the hottest of the three commanders, I’m just going to say it) who lives by the belief that true strength is fighting for those you care about, while Sanmoto is a fat bastard who uses his clan as a form of cheap amusement and views their lives as disposable, something Rihan calls him out for.

But for Rikuo, it’s less clear: for one there’s Yoshihira, who Tsurara outright says is uncomfortably similar to Rikuo, and also Seimei, who operates off a perverted version of Rikuo’s “harmony”.

And I think the answer is that they both are, but in different ways. Rikuo is a character whose arc encompasses multiple themes, but the two main ones here are fate and harmony. Fate is him being the grandson of Nurarihyon, thereby destined to become a youkai lord, resolve his ancestors’ centuries-long conflicts, and ultimately oppose the Cleansing. While defeating Seimei, he even says it’s him “cutting through fate”. Harmony, on the other hand, is his system of ideals, what he wants for the world: that is, for humans and youkai to exist together, without one subjugating the other.

Yoshihira is so similar to Rikuo because of having both been descended from youkai lords and destined to lead their respective families, as well as being three-fourths human. Yoshihira accepted this purely out of obligation and a desire for his father’s recognition, while Rikuo took a more roundabout path to get there. At first he thought being the Master of All Spirits sounded awesome, until he realized that his school friends don’t like youkai, at which point his attitude did a 180 and he wanted to live purely as a human. It was only when Gagoze attacked that he decided he *did* want to take up the mantle, but for the sake of protecting humans from bad guys. This would later be refined into his belief in a harmonious world, and so we see the difference between them: Rikuo decided not to actively oppose his fate persay, but wrangled it into something of his own rather than uncritically accepting it.

Seimei, on the other hand, represents a fallen version of Rikuo’s ideals; a belief in harmony, but a harmony that can only exist through his singular, eternal, and absolute rule, with all dissenting factions being wiped out. It goes so far that he sees his own affection for his mother as a weakness that must be purged, hence why he cast her to Hell. This is in stark contrast to Rikuo, who believes that the bonds between people are precisely what make them strong (carried on from his father, and proven literally with the Matoi) and recognizes the right of both human and youkai groups to largely do their own thing, as long as they aren’t actively causing destruction. Heck, he doesn’t even force Tamazuki, Dassai, and the Tsukumo Clan to join his Hyakki Yakkou, only asking them to temporarily lend their strength for the war against Seimei before parting ways afterward. His ideal world isn’t one of absolute control, but of his subjects actually having a decent amount of freedom.

So, I’d say Rikuo actually has two different foils, one for each of his major themes. It’s also worth pointing out that the ending implies Tamazuki (and possibly also Dassai) will become his main rival(s) in the coming decades, but they wouldn’t necessarily have as much ideological conflict anymore since Tamazuki has largely reformed, and Dassai is just a bro.

So, I was a kid during the 90's and... pizza was basically king back then. The Ninja Turtles ate it so of course it was the coolest food on the planet. I saw The Noid when he first became popular, and young me absolutely hated him because he was such an ugly bastard.

However, another pizza mascot I actually liked back then was Pizza Head... no, not my clown husband, I mean Pizza Hut's mascot from the same era. This guy:

I always thought he was adorable and felt really bad for him because, in every commercial he was in, he was antagonized by Steve, a sentient pizza cutter who was often in disguise:

Funny thing is that Pizza Hut's "Pizza Head" commercials were all made by the same guy responsible for Saturday Night Live's "Mr. Bill" animated segments. Considering Pizza Head and Mr. Bill both suffered tremendous violence from their respective tormentors - Pizza Head had Steve, and Mr. Bill had Sluggo - it's not hard to make the connection.

This is a pic I stole from Pinterest of dolls of Mr. Bill and Sluggo. This... is actually the first time I've seen Sluggo, as I never really watched SNL when I was younger.

It's actually because of Pizza Hut's Steve character I wanted to make a much-needed update to my Pizza Tower OC. Melissa Monotoli now has a large pizza cutter as a weapon... guess what she nicknamed it? Steve! Not only is it a direct reference to it being a potential Pizzahead killer, but...

It's also a reference to Ryuko Matoi's Scissor Blade from Kill la Kill!

(I really need to draw Melissa wielding Steve. It's supposed to go with her sentient suit, Count Heirloom.)

Midnight blue stretched the sky, orange shades danced on festival canvas, lively chatter filled the air. Somewhere to the south taiko rhythms drummed the night and the burning smell of wooden fire mixed with the sugar coated indulgence of japanese sweets.

Red paper lanterns reflected dimly on his hair, filtered through his vanta strands. The perfect complement to his cardinal eyes.

“Stop staring you goddamn wrench, it’s irritating” his moody tenor snapped me out my trance. “Call me wrench again and I’ll send you to the infernals”

Right. Benimaru wasn’t here because he wanted to go out with me but rather because Konro pressured him to come after he rejected me. Nothing out of the usual then because that would be your typical scenario for as long as I could remember. Still. Today he seemed to be in a particularly foul mood. “The venom in your mouth will make you trip one day. Well, not that I give a damn” I took a deep breath. A very deep breath. “Okay, all right. I got it. This is annoying, you don’t want to be here and I’m just an addition to that. BUT. It’s not like this is the first time you have to deal with that and the fireworks are starting soon. Let’s watch it and go home”

For a hot minute he just stared at me with his stern gaze. I looked at him expectantly. “It’s not like you’re suddenly too stupid to crane your neck?” That was exactly the same tragic drama as always. I pointed at the sky “You know that it’s more fun watching it up close” He didn’t budge. “I’m very aware that you can go up there on your own, so just leave me be” “Come on, I know you’ll enjoy this too” “I know that I don’t enjoy carrying some dead weight”

I felt the temperature around me dropping, small crystals formed on my palms. “Shinmon Benimaru” I snarled through gritted teeth. Clicking his tongue he sighed but grabbed the nearest matoi in his reach, spinning it around and setting it on fire. “Get on already” he gestured with his hands. As I was about to take the place at his side he snatched me from the ground, cradling me inside his arms. “You’re taking forever, you little shit” Securing my arms around his neck I snickered. Apparently being with me wasn’t as bad as I had thought.

A chilly breeze tickled the ends of my flowing kimono. Pressing myself closer, I enjoyed the heat of his body slowly prickling into my skin. Right as we reached the perfect height and I had made myself comfortable in his arms the first booming sound echoed through the night. A million little sparks followed, raining down on us like a shower of gentle fireflies. Doused in golden lights I admired the scene around us with a child’s curiosity. Even if the elements of fire were burned into my very bones, fireworks would never cease to amaze me. Adoring the sight around me I caught Benimaru staring at me. It felt almost like he was watching the lights through the reflection in my gaze. Heat rose inside me, tingling all the way to my fingertips. I knew talking right now was pointless, asking what this gesture meant. We’ve been close since the day he picked me up from the gutter. Just a little older than myself he watched over me, trained with me and showed me how to feel self worth. Benimaru taught me how to use my abilities to help others instead of being a disaster. Apparently one king of destruction was enough for Asakusa. I wasn’t tired of keeping up with his fits and our little quarrels only just brought us closer. We completed each other in our own unique way. However, we never really crossed any line that would suggest we’d be lovers even if we did things only couples would do. When I’d be upset he’d hold my hand, when his thoughts would be too loud to let him rest I would lay down by his side. Neither him nor I did label us though. The things we did felt completely natural and I hadn’t really questioned it until recently.

"Just enjoy this Ryuko. Things will flow smoothly the sooner you let it."

As much as Ryuko wished, she didn't want to enjoy the sensation but she did. Ryuko still tried to get away and with all the energy she had, the most she managed was to flip over onto her stomach. At least her face wasn't assaulted but Satsuki's lips now. Oh but she was wrong. Satsuki whispered in a gentle tone with a velvet soft pitch that sent chills to Ryuko's spine.

Suddenly Ryuko's right ear was bitten. Softly but enough for Satsuki to mark the girl as hers. That’s totally how you do the ask! Alright, let’s go :D and because I’m me, I’m gonna do Rikuo & Zen. Mostly because I can see this being a particularly dynamic one for them.

27. the one where you can transfer any injuries/pain your soulmate has onto yourself.

The first time he coughs blood during a Kiyojūji Paranormal Patrol meeting, Kana immediately panics and frets over him while Kiyotsugu loudly exclaims that he must have been attacked by a yōkai, and Rikuo has to wrestle down the urge to laugh in his face.

“No, it’s nothing like that. My asshole soulmate just doesn’t know when to take it easy, that’s all.”

That certainly makes them pause in their exclamations and contemplations, the stunned silence lasting long enough for him to wipe his mouth on the dark brown handkerchief he’s carried in his pocket ever since he started school and drink from his water bottle until the taste of blood is washed away. Saori and Natsumi whisper rapidly to each other, while Jirō stares at him like he’s somehow sprouted a second head. (He’s not sure whether they’re surprised about what he said, or the fact that he swore while saying it).

It’s Kana, though, who responds first. “You have a soulmate? Do you know who she is?”

There it is, just like always. Rikuo winces and laughs it off, waving a hand in the air. “Ahh, it doesn’t matter, really. So, what were we doing today?”“Well, you see—” And Kiyotsugu’s off, taking charge of the situation once more and distracting everybody very efficiently from Rikuo’s little issue (though he still catches Kana glancing over at him with a thoughtful, concerned look when she thinks he won’t notice).

His mother worries, of course, and he doesn’t have the heart to tell her not to. She’s already lost two soulmates, after all — one of the bond, and one of the heart — and it’s not his place to try and stop her from being concerned. After all, she still has a small urn in her room with her best friend’s ashes in it, and he remembers her gentle voice from when he was young as she told him that her soulmate had died after taking a fatal injury for her. They had been platonic soulmates, she had told him, the very best of friends, but it hadn’t hurt any less to realize the car accident that should have killed her instead took away her most important person.

So it’s natural that she worries whenever he finds blood bubbling in his throat and a cough trapped there like an itch. Rikuo lets her steep tea and wipe the blood off of his chin gently, because if it’ll make her feel a little better then it’s worth it.

He’s not worried, though. Because of the yōkai Fear in his veins, he knows he’ll still live longer than a normal human, and he’s sure he’ll have more than enough time to do what he wants and needs to do. And because of this bond, his soulmate will be able to share that much more time with him, so he’s never regretted it even when he wakes up with his lungs on fire and blood on his lips.

If it means Zen will be able to live alongside him for that much more of his life, then Rikuo’s willing to endure it for as long as he can.

Worry does creep in while he’s in Tōno, training. His heritage means that he heals faster than a normal human and most yōkai, but bruises and scrapes from sparring disappearing within hours is not something even his body can do. He glances down to catch sight of one vanishing from his shin while working with Itaku, and swears decoratively. “That asshole! Agh, when I get back I’m gonna—”

“What are you talking about, Rikuo?”

He groans and rolls his eyes, pointing at a scratch on his cheek that is fading even as he speaks. “My absolute dumbass of a soulmate, who’s taking these despite having the shittiest health in all of Honshū because he’s always been an obnoxiously protective bastard.”

“Hn.” Itaku makes a face and — to Rikuo’s surprise — nods understandingly. “I have experienced the same. But then again, with our kind it is…” He purses his lips, as though considering what to say, “—reasonable, I suppose, for one to take on some of the burden while the other is fighting. I have done so for mine on occasion, though it is rather inconvenient that they experience so many hand injuries.” He eyes Rikuo, considering. “I would hope yours does not do the same.”

Having been expecting a very different reaction — disgust, at least, if not outright dismissal — Rikuo could only gape and nod. “I— well, coughing blood, but that’s about it. He’s a doctor, not— er, not like this.” He flails one hand out at the training ground.

“Good.” Itaku seems to take this as a cue that he’s ready to continue sparring, and launches himself across the gap between them with sickles out and flashing. Rikuo yelps in surprise and throws himself back into the fight, silently swearing to metaphorically rip his stupid, idiot soulmate a new one when he returns.

“I had thought that if you could achieve this with anyone, it would be your soulmate.” Rikuo resists the urge to wince at Gyūki’s entirely neutral words, because the fact that Zen’s his soulmate is probably one of the Nura Clan’s worst-kept secrets but he still expects to hear disparaging murmurs and mocking laughter, “I am pleased to see I was correct.”

“They’re soulmates?”

And there it is. Even still feeling the pure energy that had coursed through his veins when they had merged together in Matoi, Rikuo flinches at the clear disdain in the Kurama Daitengu’s voice. Zen is further down the slope, already administering antidotes and treatment to the yōkai that attacked them, and RIkuo’s glad he’s far enough away to not hear this again.

Before anything more can be said, however, Gyūki steps in and reminds Rikuo just why he was so adamant that the older yōkai remain on the board even after his attempts to kill him. “That is irrelevant. We have achieved what I promised we would, and need this mountain no longer. We will leave you to your home.”

The Daitengu stiffens but holds his tongue, instead looking around to observe what has become of his troupes. “Gyūki, just what did you teach him?”

“Nothing you need to know. Just that his sword will now reach its goal.”

From down the slope, Zen calls to ask if they’re quite done yet, and Rikuo honestly doesn’t care if the Kyōto yōkai sees the smile it brings to his face. Zen’s here with him, safe, Gyūki’s on his side and has taught him what he needs to know for the coming battles, and that’s more than enough reason to let his lips stretch wide until his cheeks ache.

He most definitely isn’t smiling when the pain in his hand and side vanishes as soon as he’s let go of Hagoromo-Gitsune’s sword, before any blood can even drip onto the wooden beams beneath them, and he turns carelessly from the battle to yell furiously at the collection of yōkai below.

“Zen, don’t you fucking dare take on my injuries! We need you, damn it!”

Ignoring the surprise of those around them — allies, enemies, and onmyōji alike — the mint-haired yōkai rolls his eyes and deftly bandages his now-bleeding hand as he makes his way to a nearby roof. “Not like you’re all that disposable yourself, idiot! I’m hardly going to let you up and die somewhere like this!”

“Well, you— fuck!” Rikuo has to break off to defend himself again, because Hagoromo Gitsune clearly doesn’t care about important and valuable soulmate conversations. “—you don’t get to up and die either, you hear me?”

He’s not imagining the sorely concealed worry in his friend’s eyes, but Zen grins brightly and waves a lazy hand in acknowledgement before returning to his own concerns. Rikuo feels the ache where his back hit a support beam earlier fade away and scowls, launching himself back into the fight.

Really, it’s always like this.

When the Kusozu begins to set in, Rikuo can’t stop himself from screaming. The pain is horrible, it burns and crawls and makes his skin feel slick and disgusting like he’s covered in oil (but it’s his own blood and rot, of course), and he hopes desperately that it will stay just like that until he can destroy the sick bastard who’s causing all of this. If the pain starts to fade, he’s not sure he’ll be able to stop himself from abandoning the battle to run for the main house and knock sense into his stupid, stupid soulmate.

But it doesn’t, even as he feels himself begin to rot (and god, isn’t that terrifying, feeling yourself fall apart like loose earth), and as he leaps to the top of the building where Kyosai has made his refuge he is morbidly relieved. No matter what, he would never want Zen to endure even a fraction of this.

He only stays behind after the artist has fallen for a few minutes, taking time to reassure Saori and Natsumi (the two soulmates are clinging to each other, tears on both of their cheeks but the rest of them mercifully uninjured) before departing once again towards the next challenge.

Before he goes, however, he tells the nearest Nura Clan member to head back to the main house and warn Zen that if he even dares to transfer Rikuo’s injuries, he’ll be asking for some more pain of his own. Who knows if he’ll listen, but at least it’s an attempt.

Rikuo will heal, after all; his grandmother’s blood is still strong, already starting to put him back together at the deepest levels of the destruction. Zen doesn’t need to take on this burden for him.

It’s while his friends are at the main house, sitting in the front room and marveling at what had been hidden from them, that he sees Kana realize. Zen’s sitting beside him, changing the bandages on the injuries that are taking longer to heal and disguising his concern in irate grumbling. A few innocuous scrapes and scratches pass from one to the other, and when the coughing starts Zen makes sure to wave off the silent offer, patiently letting the fit settle itself and wiping his lips carelessly on his sleeve before finishing with the checkup and tugging Rikuo sideways so they’re leaning against each other.

Kana’s the only one watching, as Kiyotsugu and Jirō are distracted by Kejōrō and Kubinashi, and he can see the moment it clicks in her head. The way her eyes dart between the two of them, putting two and two and two together. She leans forward and he tenses, because he has no idea how she’ll react to two men being soulmates (it’s ironic — humans will have issues with their gender, yōkai will have issues with their blood, they just can’t catch a break).

“So this is the asshole who doesn’t know when to take it easy, then?”

Beside him, Zen chokes, and Rikuo finds himself bursting into startled laughter. Under the sound of his soulmate’s spluttered protests, he meets his friend’s eyes and manages to return to warm smile she sends him. Perhaps he shouldn’t have worried, after all.

Ahh, that took longer than I expected… sorry if the format is a little weird, but I thought it would be nice to bookend it like this, and since I wrote it all in one sitting… this was really fun to do, though, so thank you for requesting it!

I have a lot of ideas for this AU, now… (For the record, soulmates that were implied and/or established in this AU, according to my head — Rikuo/Zen, Nurarihyon/Yōhime, Rihan/Otome, Wakana/OC (childhood best friend, platonic soulmates), Saori/Natsumi, Kubinashi/Itaku, and though it’s not mentioned or anything Mamiru/Ryūji. I also imagine this as a universe where soulmates can be platonic, romantic, familial, etc— Wakana’s soulmate was platonic, and all the others mentioned except for Nurarihyon/Yōhime and Rihan/Otome could be as well, since I tried to keep it vague on purpose).
