Voodoo and Hoodoo: What’s the Difference?
If you live in America, you have undoubtedly come across the terms of voodoo and hoodoo. What is the difference between the two, and how does African (umbrella term) culture play a role in each?
Tumblr media
Voodoo
(A.K.A. Vodou, Voudou, Vodun) Voodoo is a religion that originated within Africa amidst the Atlantic slave trade. Its structure comes from a mix of traditional religions of West and Central enslaved Africans (Yoruba, Kongo, and Fon). Once brought to the Hispaniola island, Voodoo saw influences of the culture of the French colonialists who controlled the colony of Saint-Domingue (Freemasonry).
Many Haitians who practice Voodoo also practice Roman Catholicism, not seeing a contradiction between the two systems existing simultaneously. Characterized as Haiti’s “national religion”, Voodoo is one of the most misunderstood religions in the world. Voodoo is monotheistic, giving the teachings of a single supreme God. Believed to have created the universe, this entity is called Bondye or Bonié. For Vodouists, Bondye is seen as the ultimate source of power. This perception of God is also seen as remote, not involving itself in human affairs. While Vodouists often equate Bondye with the Christian God, Vodou does not incorporate belief in a powerful antagonist that opposes the supreme being akin to the Christian notion of Satan.
Vodou also holds the belief of many beings known as Iwa, a term that varies in its translation from “spirits” to “gods”. These beings can in many ways be equated to Christian angels in many of its cosmology. The lwa can offer help, protection, and counsel to humans, in return for ritual service. Each lwa has its own personality and individual correspondences. They can be either loyal or capricious in their dealings with their devotees, with many believing that the lwa are easily offended. When angered, the lwa are believed to remove their protection from their devotees, or to inflict harm.
Vodou also teaches a perspective of the human soul, which is believed to be divided into two parts (both of which exist within the head of a person). One of these is the ti bonnanj ("little good angel"), and it is understood as the conscience that allows an individual to engage in self-reflection and self-criticism. The other part is the gwo bonnanj ("big good angel") and this constitutes the psyche, source of memory, intelligence, and personhood. Vodouists believe that every individual is intrinsically connected to a specific lwa. This lwa is their mèt tèt (master of the head). They believe that this lwa influences the individual's personality. At bodily death, the gwo bonnanj join the Ginen, or ancestral spirits, while the ti bonnanj proceeds to the afterlife to face judgement before Bondye.
Vodou does not promote a dualistic belief in a division between good and evil. It offers no prescriptive code of ethics. Rather than being rule-based, Vodou morality is deemed contextual to the situation.
It is very important to respect Vodou as the closed practice that it is. While misunderstood through various contextualizations, it is a religion felt deeply by a group of people who use it to guide their lives. Those outside do not have the right to infringe upon said spaces.
Tumblr media
Hoodoo
It is important to understand that Hoodoo does not describe a religion. Rather, Hoodoo is a set of mystical beliefs hailing from along the Mississippi River with influences from Indigenous herbalism, African spiritualities, and Christian influences. Practitioners of Hoodoo are called rootworkers, conjure doctors, conjure man or conjure woman, root doctors, Hoodoo doctors, and swampers.
Many Hoodoo traditions specifically draw from the beliefs of the Bakongo people of Central Africa during the Atlantic slave trade. After their contact with European slave traders and missionaries, some Africans converted to Christianity willingly, while other enslaved Africans were forced to become Christian which resulted in a syncretization of African spiritual practices and beliefs with the Christian faith. Enslaved and free Africans learned regional indigenous botanical knowledge after they arrived to the United States, including another influence to what would become known as Hoodoo.
During the transatlantic slave trade a variety of African plants were brought from Africa to the United States for cultivation (okra, sorghum, yam, benneseed, watermelon, black-eyed peas, etc.). African Americans had their own herbal knowledge that was brought from West and Central Africa to the United States. When it came to the medicinal use of herbs, African Americans learned some medicinal knowledge of herbs from Indigenous peoples. However, the spiritual use of herbs and the practice of Hoodoo remained African in origin as enslaved African-Americans incorporated African religious rituals in the preparation of North American herbs and roots.
Hoodoo was also a key part in black revolution in the United States. Enslaved women would use their knowledge of herbs to induce miscarriages so white owners wouldn’t be able to take their children. There were also examples of hoodoo being used to poison and kill white slave owners. The Bible itself, in conjunction with Hoodoo, was used in slave liberation. Free and enslaved people could read the stories of the Hebrews in the Bible, and found them similar to their situation in the United States as slaves. The Hebrews in the Old Testament were freed from slavery in Egypt under the leadership of Moses (held to be a conjurer in the beliefs of many who practice Hoodoo).
Tumblr media
Hoodoo is also a closed practice, requiring initiation for practitioners.

Hellooooo call me Dia, what do you think of a Hc for Chuu and Aku inspired by Houseki no Kuni ?? Like, Kongo is a ability user that allows you to have practically an army of Gems, so reader is a gem and boys fall in love with them ( gn!reader).
YESSSS I LOVED THIS i love you Dia!
Kongo, a mysterious and isolated Ability user with an army of Gems who recently allied himself with Mori Ougai. His Gems, also treated as his children, are the ones who carry out the missions while the master takes care of paperwork and meetings
Tumblr media
No biggie, it was Mr. Emo boy's first impressions
But when you and Akutagawa were sent on a joint mission and honestly he was impressed
Both the fact that you are not human and his agility.
But then came the denial:
''No no no! It's stupid to be in love with a Skill '' he repeated that wanting to forget what he felt, but luckily it didn't work and it was visible.
Now, he will be more protective than he already is and hates to see people get too close.
He will unwittingly be the type of person he admires without realizing it will refuse to admit it.
It will be more touch starved than it already is for fear of causing cracks.
Tumblr media
As an executive, he was one of the first to know about you and your teammates and OH MY GOD
Your shiny and dazzling hair hypnotized him
Who wouldn't fall in love with you, a beautiful gemstone literally.
He didn't even care that you were a skill, after all he's seen everything in this life.
Since you work in the PM, he doesn't like being sent on missions with you, because he's too afraid of gravity squashing you like an ant, even though you're technically immortal he'll still feel awful.
I would CERTAINLY buy some accessory with the type of your gem just to ''match''

Working With Voodoo Spirits.
Tumblr media
The Loa as Guardians One of Voodoo is the Loa. A Loa is a Voodoo spirit ( not god's) from Hati and used in Louisiana voodoo, that aids the practitioner in life, including with success, sexuality, spirituality, protection, healing and even in death.
Loa to angels or guardians. The Loa are divided into groups or “nations” known as Nanchons. Some are easier to approach and work with than others. Each and every one MUST be approached with a humble respect and working knowledge.
Saints and Voodoo:
Spirits Sycretization is the blending (or disguise) of one religious belief/custom with another. In the Voodoo tradition, the African slaves brought to Louisiana and other countries against their will were forced to adapt their captors’ religions – one of which was Catholicism.
Papa Legba is also portrayed as Saint Lazarus or Saint Anthony or St. Peter. Depending on the country your in.
You can work with their Saint forms, as well. The Nanchons (Families) of Loa, Voodoo Spirits. The Nanchons are families of Voodoo spirits, some from Africa and others from the New World.
Rada: Cool Voodoo Spirits.
The Rada nanchon is considered the “cool” Voodoo spirit family. The Loas within this nanchon are strong spirits and are mostly benevolent to their followers.
The Rada nanchon includes Papa Legba, Marassa, Ezili Freda, and Lasiren etc.
The Rada nanchon are the first to be called upon during ritual and are the oldest Loa from Africa.
Petro Loa:
Hot Voodoo Spirits.
Petro. These Voodoo spirits have roots in Haiti. The Voodoo spirits of the Petro nanchon are wilder and more apt to mischief and malevolence. Voodoo spirits in the Petro nanchon include Met Kalfu and Ezili Dantor. Ghede Loa are made up of spirits who have lived human lives before.
They are Voodoo spirits that watch over the graveyards and the dead. They often are boisterous and have wild party-like personalities.
Tumblr media
The Barons lead this nanchon including Baron Samedi, Kriminel, and Maman Brigitte. (Although Maman is not that hot headed)
There are other Families Spirits that we including Igbo and Kongo, both heavily revered in Haiti. In addition to New Orleans Voodoo tradition works with some spirits that might not have a traditional Nanchon (family) including Marie Laveau, Dr. John, and Black Hawk.
Tumblr media
Papa Ghede: (used in New Orleans)
Voodoo Spirit of Death. Papa Gede is a spirit who waits at the crossroads to take souls into the afterlife. He is considered the good counterpart to Baron Samedi.
Papa Ghede is often pictured smoking a cigar, wearing sunglasses, and donning a big smile. His personality is jovial and whacky. In addition to being the Voodoo spirit of death and graveyards, he is a spirit of sexuality.
Witches and Voodoo:
Spirits. Many of us would be frightened if followed by a Voodoo spirits, but maybe we shouldn’t be. These spirits, like Papa Ghede, guide us to the afterlife. But, sometimes, they may reach out to those they feel they could teach. I believe this is why (witches) outside the of Voodoo tradition are sometimes approached by the Loa. Because we have one foot in this world and one foot in the spirit world, it’s common for witches to see spirits from the Voodoo tradition and beyond. ( Like I said in another post even if your practicing traditional Hoodoo does not mean you can't be called by another spirit or deity from another religion)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Papa Legba:
Voodoo Spirit of the Crossroads.
Papa Legba is a Loa in the Rada nanchon. While he’s known to be a jokester, he is also benevolent. He is the son of two major Voodoo spirits: Dangabala Wedo and Ayida Wedo. Legba is the mediator between the Loa and the Great Master Spirit (God), like Saint Lazarus. Every traditional Voodoo ritual invites Legba into the circle first, as he opens the gates at the crossroads for the others to come through.
An introductory song may go something like this: Legba, open the gates for me So that I may go through Upon my return I shall greet the Lwa. Pspa Legba open the gate for me So that I may come in.Amen.
( or you can speak to St Lazarus) In Haitian Vodou, the image of Saint Lazarus for the crutch that he uses for support or St Peter for the keys that he holds, are used to represent Papa Legba. God and humans, in many ways similar to Jesus Christ.
So You Want to Work with Voodoo Spirits?
If you plan to invite the Loa into your rituals or work with them in your (witchcraft), do thorough research first. Know exactly which nanchon and Loa you’re working with and what their traits are, whether benevolent or mischievous. Know what offerings they prefer. You must show respect.

This is my homeland I'm from many parts that live deep within my souls, ancestors, and spirits. They give me unconditional love and support. Even the moments where I thought I had no more gas in my mind my soul has been uplifted and healed many times. I am healing and the hardest part in this process is its liberation and progression constantly. I'm grateful for everything about Mother Father God ancestors, spirit guides and master teachers who keep me flowing in solitude and being mentally stronger cause it's very easy to give energy to ungrateful spirits unintentionally by remembering who you are foremost. Do not allow these people to feed you their ego cause believe it or not. It's been so much that's happened with so called spiritualists and people who claim things they know nothing about dragging innocent people into their bullshit in which families are fighting to stay what's known as home. The spirits speak and trust us they are undefeated and tough that they have no problem seeing you in your sleep through ascensions. The veil is thin so do not assume we cannot see or hear. Ancestors speak and live inside my 🧬🧬.
The power is yours and vibrates higher mentally spiritually as well as our libations to teaching Akoma Sankofa .
Divine love starts inside oneself
Go back and return to oneself
Nothing will make sense right now
Just stay attuned in truth that speaks to your inner being.

LORENZO DOW TURNER (1890 –1972) was an academic and linguist who conducted seminal research on the Gullah language of coastal South Carolina and Georgia. He earned a master's degree from Harvard and a Ph.D. from the Univ. of Chicago. He taught at Howard Univ. (1917-1928) and Fisk Univ. (1929 – 1946) and traveled West Africa, identifying over 300 (Mende, Vai, Fulani) Gullah loanwords and 4,000 personal names. He published his findings in his book “Africanisms in the Gullah Dialect (1949).
His work also connected the (ring) Shout to the Islamic 'shawt' and the Tassawuf ceremony. The Shout is based largely on Kongo and other African cosmological systems and rituals; the songs tend to evoke Christian Biblical imagery and themes; but the mysticism therein is connected to Islam.
