The last episode of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy tv version aired on February 9, 1981. The 6th episode recalled the events following the crew's departure from the Resteraunt at the End of the Universe. In divergence from the radio play, the crew found themselves in a stunt ship about to plung into a sun instead of in a battleship at the lead of an attack fleet. The show then realigned with the radio show with Arthur Dent and Ford Predect ending up on Ark B and then stranded on prehistoric Earth. (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, TV Event)

An Englishman Abroad (BBC, 1983)
"The average Englishman, you see, is not interested in ideas. Say what you like about political theory. No one will listen. You could shove a whole slice of the Communist manifesto into the Queen's Speech. Nobody would turn a hair. Least of all, I suspect, HMQ."
#an englishman abroad#1983#alan bennett#john schlesinger#single play#bbc#alan bates#coral browne#charles gray#harold innocent#vernon dobtcheff#alexei jawdokimov#matthew sim#denys hawthorne#trevor baxter#mark wing davey#molly veness#judy gridley#peter chelsom#douglas reith#based on the true story of Browne's incidental meeting with (and subsequent correspondence with) Guy Burgess during the RSC#(then the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre) tour of Hamlet to Moscow in 1958. Browne had told Bennett the tale and then gently nudged him into#writing the play‚ although it was he who suggested she play herself (reasoning that her age had no real impact on the work; and actually#despite being around 70 she convinces as her 40 something self). Schlesinger apparently muscled in and wanted to expand the story to make a#feature length cinema film but Bennett correctly stood his ground; as he said‚ this is an anecdote‚ and probably wouldn't stand dragging#out longer than an hour. as it is‚ it's a sharply delivered character study that muses on ideas of class and identity and the nature of#what is proper (in the english sense). most of his former contacts regard Burgess with an almost passive indifference‚ his status as a#traitor an incidental aside that's no more damning than his homosexuality or his alcholism was. Bennett was uneasy about casting Bates#despite their being friends‚ because he was the wrong class; this time Schlesinger was right in calling him out on that nonsense#Bates is superb as the semi tragic‚ semi noble (and frequently very funny) exile; Browne his match for spiky dialogue and raised eyebrows

'The Vagrant Trilogy,' an Amazing Work by Mona Mansour
‘The Vagrant Trilogy,’ an Amazing Work by Mona Mansour
The company of The Vagrant Trilogy (Joan Marcus) The power of The Vagrant Trilogy, Mona Mansour’s incredible work, currently at the Public Theater until 15 of May, lies in the questions it raises. These concern the very real circumstances presented, especially in Act III. Mona Mansour’s connected one-act plays (that took the Public one decade to effect), ask us to empathize with the plight of…

what are your feelings on davey who struggles academically????
OHMYOGODHDSH i actually have so many thoughts about this THANK YOU
so i feel like people often see davey as someone who does excel academically because he's like. the Brains yknow. but there is a HUGE difference between how successful you are academically and your intelligence and honestly i feel like davey definitely feels this gap because he's so used to thinking on his feet and just winging things- which always works out for him and it's something he's really good at but it's very much not as beneficial in an academic setting as it is in actual real life because school is all about planning and long projects and Yeah
davey is extremely quick witted and intelligent but the general pressure of school plus the long pieces of work, sleep deprivation, constant social interaction, etc kind of blocks that for him and he finds it really hard to deal with that, especially when he's so used to being the 'perfect sibling role model' in his family. also being forced to write about topics he has very little interest in just because they're part of the curriculum just takes the joy out of the subjects he studies
he also doesn't understand why it feels like he's the only one who finds it hard- obviously he spends a lot of time around jack, who always seems to get through school so effortlessly, especially because since he's studying art, to davey he seems to just always be painting and he never seems to be drowning in essays or anything
that being said, he always finds a way to get things done in time, even if they aren't done 'well' (davey is the kind of guy to write a really funny and witty one sentence answer to an essay which gets absolutely no marks academically but is just totally genius). normally this way involves a lot of coffee. i am a firm supporter of davey entirely relying on caffeine to get him through college

if you ever think i'm getting too controversial just wait until i unleash bangers like
no offence to george michael great guy one of the lads of all time (positive) but last christmas is possibly one of my least favourite songs of all time and i hate it with every fiber of my being
or
the anamatronic head prop is really cool but they should have let mark wing-davey have the zoomies and maybe have enough budget for a second series by letting the 2 heads thing stay as a throwaway joke that only works on radio
hasgtag i'm so cancelled

After a successful radio series, then book series, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy made the jump to television on January 5th, 1981. Most of the principle cast of the radio series kept their same roles - Simon Jones (Arthur Dent), Peter Jones (the Book), Mark Wing-Davey (Zaphod Beeblebrox), and Stephen Moore (Marven the Paranoid Android) - but Ford Prefect was recast to David Dixon as the producer didn't consider Geoffery McGivern weird enough looking and Trillian was recast to Sandra Dickenson due to Susan Sheridan being unavailable. The show also kept the same theme, but with a new arangement. The first episode followed the introduction of both the radio series and book series, with Arthur Dent trying to prevent his house from being knocked down only to find out his friend was an alien and the Earth was about to be destroyed to make a Galatic Bypass. To access our information pack, click here.
What is Headphone Verbatim?
Pioneered by community arts activist Anna Deveare-Smith and Mark Wing Davey in the USA and now championed in the UK by Kristine Landon-Smith, it is a documentary theatre technique that can rapidly deliver the mood of a community, giving space to unheard voices in society.
Long-form interview is used to collect unique and distinctive personal stories. Once interviews have been completed, the edit looks for the "real" story in the interview: the subtext if you like. Artists then perform edited interviews whilst listening to them at the same time through headphones: hence "headphone verbatim". This technique allows every breath, every utterance, and every idiosyncratic detail of the speaker to be captured by the performer. The result is often a series of poignant, unpredictable, tender, funny and honest testimonies. It is an opportunity to reject the notion of stereotypes and engage with the complexity of each and every personal story. It has the potential to explore identity, culture, history, art, media and technology in the modern world.
Train with us and become a Headphone Verbatim practitioner
We are seeking a cohort of 25 Black & Global Majority creatives to join Kristine Landon-Smith on a 2-week Headphone Verbatim training programme. Participants must be 18 to 30 years and early to mid-career artists. This course is perfect for educators, arts professionals & producers who want to create work with and for diverse communities. It is also an invaluable skill for actors, directors and theatre-makers.
By the end of the process, artists will be equipped with the below skills, a growing network of fellow Headphone-makers and the confidence to develop their own practice. This is part of KLS & Associates’ long-term aim to develop a cohort of practitioners who will be able to train, create and distribute the Headphone Verbatim practice across the UK.
What are the benefits?
Develop a peer network that could support you in the work you make going forward
Build your networks and understanding of working with diverse communities
Receiving teaching and mentorship from highly experienced practitioners
Become equipped with all the skills required to make a Headphone show of one’s own, including:
Selecting a project’s themes with community members
Interview techniques to work with real people from diverse communities
Edit techniques: how to recognise a good edit, using editing software to cut and collate interviews
Understanding the tools to create a performance (Dropbox, tracker documents, ethics & permission release forms)
Curation of material to develop a whole show
Understanding of the Headphone Verbatim performance technique.
Bursary Spots
The fee for this programme is £150 with bursary places available. We are committed to removing financial barriers to accessing the industry whenever possible. We have a limited number of bursary spaces for those who need them. If you are interested in applying for one of these spaces, get in touch with Charlotte at [email protected]

Video
I actually thought of this joke three or four years ago, but it was only last month that I decided to do something about it. Initially, I considered doing this as an incorrect quotes post, but then I thought it worked better as a video. Make of it what you will.
