This is Marion Stokes, a Philadelphia librarian who began taping whatever was on television from 1975 until her death in 2012. She made a total of 71,000 VHS and Betamax tapes, which is the most comprehensive collection of television during this era.
She was able to pay for her recordings and storage space by investing early in Apple stock. Although she had never sent a single email, she managed to convince her friends and family to purchase Apple stock. Towards the end of her life, she had made so much money that she was able to store her tapes in nine apartments she had purchased over the years.
According to film director Matt Wolf, Marion Stokes "was interested in access to information, documenting media, making sure people had the information they needed to make good decisions."
Due to her political activism in her early years, Stokes was convinced that the government was keeping surveillance on her every move, and she became extremely cautious about her recordings.
She had every right to be paranoid as she lived through the Philadelphia MOVE bombing in 1985, in which the FBI and Philadelphia police used a helicopter to drop bombs during an armed standoff with MOVE members. The bombs started a fire that eventually destroyed 61 houses and killed 11 people.
Her work is currently being digitized by the Internet Archive, a non-profit library of millions of free books, movies, software, music, websites, and more.

Playing Robin's route and is it bad that as soon as I saw Lord Geoffrey, I was like, "Robin who? I'm going back to my actual groom" 🙈. Marion may have sense, but I do not and in my defense... Geoffrey's hot. I can fix him. It's fine. A little bit of corruption and questionable choices has never stopped me, askdjasdj. (I'm genuinely excited for Geoffrey's route! Will was what drew me in and I'm still super stoked for his route especially after the preview, but I've always been a villain lover first and foremost, welp.)
I can't lie, when I first got the idea for Made Marion, my first thought after, "You know, I love the Robin Hood legends and there are a ton of possible love interests," was "The Sheriff of Nottingham must be romanceable."
But I didn't want the Sheriff to be the one-dimensional villain that he is in many of the tales (both past and present). One of my big rules as a writer is that everyone believes they're the good guy. There are reasons why Geoffrey is doing what he's doing and while I certainly don't agree with all of them on a personal level, the important thing is that Geoffrey believes they are necessary measures for the greater good.
We won't be seeing a ton of Lord Geoffrey on Will and John's routes, as these routes focus on different sets of antagonists (John's on those three guards you met during the carriage heist, Will's on... SPOILERS). So perhaps he will be a bit less distracting until the Nottingham routes come out. ;)

If you have Kanopy or Criterion I highly recommend viewing the documentary Recorder: The Marion Stokes Project. It deeply emphasizes the importance of physical media and archiving historical material digital or otherwise!

My top ten reads of 2022
10. Into the Heartless Wood by Joanna Ruth Meyer
This is a unique retelling of The Little Mermaid. Here the mermaids are switched out with deadly forest sirens who harvest the soul’s of those they lure into the witch’s wood. Owen lives at the edge of the wood and one day he is shockingly saved by one of the sirens instead of killed by her. Owen and the siren grow close as an enchanted war threatens to boil over. I really enjoyed this dark fairy tale and loved the forest sirens lore.
9. Such Sharp Teeth by Rachel Harrison
After surviving an attack by a strange creature, Rory finds herself transforming in a frightening way and what follows is a journey of self discovery. This comedically dark love story is full of fun werewolf goodness!
8. House of Hunger by Alexis Henderson
Marion lives in a world where the wealthy consume human blood. In order to do so, they employ bloodmaids, esteemed servants who are treated with respect and given a hefty sum after their service ends. Marion jumps at the chance to become a bloodmaid for the House of Hunger and finds herself entranced with her employer, the beautiful countess Lisavet. But something sinister is happening within the house and Marion may be in danger. Creepy and gothic, this book was a perfect halloween read. I also thought it was interesting that Henderson didn’t go down the vampire route but created a strange world with another motive for drinking blood.
7. The House Across the Lake by Riley Sager
Sager has quickly become one of my favorite thriller authors. This book starts off with a tired trope; a widowed woman copes by drinking and secluding herself in her family’s lake house. Casey spends her days spying on her neighbors through binoculars. The couple across the lake seems perfect until Casey sees something she thinks she shouldn’t and shortly after, the wife vanishes. We’ve seen this before but Sager flips things upside down and takes it in a direction that hasn’t been seen before. It almost seems like he was trying to parody the trope in a way but it is not goofy or anything. This book was thrilling and fun with plenty of twists.
6. A Flicker in the Dark by Stacy Willingham
When Chloe was 12, girls started disappearing in her town and her father was arrested for it. Now an adult, Chloe works as a therapist and engaged to a wonderful man. Finally Chloe feels as if she has moved on from her past but then girls around her start to disappear again. This was a solid debut novel with a pretty surprising twist at the end.
5. Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing by Matthew Perry
Friends is my favorite show and Chandler my favorite character so I was stoked when this book was announced. Of course, Friends is not the focus of this book, Matthew’s history of addiction is. I’ve always admired his honesty when talking about his addiction in the past but wow was I not prepared for how much he went, and continues, to go through. Matthew is still in recovery for his addiction. He almost died in 2021 and started writing shortly after. This is not a look back on addiction and his triumphant recovery. This book IS his recovery. You can feel it through his words. This book was painful and bleak but also hopeful with a dry sense of humor sprinkled throughout.
4. When We Lost Our Heads by Heather O’Neill
This book is not for everybody but it was for me! This book follows the life of two friends, spoiled Marie and devilish Sadie, during the late 1800s. While Marie grows to inherit her father’s sugar empire, Sadie disappears into the gritty underworld of Montreal and within the working class a revolution is brewing. This is written with a strange whimsy that makes some of the darker aspects in it feel dreamlike. TW: Rape
3. I’m Glad My Mom Died by Jeanette McCurdy
I’m the same age as Jeanette and was in high school when icarly first aired. I never considered myself a fan but looking back, I watched a lot of it and it was a genuinely funny show. McCurdy’s memoir is a honest, funny but also heartbreaking look into the world of a child actor that never wanted to be one. What she went through was horrible and her ability to write this book with such wit and grace is incredible. She’s a very talented writer and I’m glad she finally got to tell her story and pursue what I think is her real passion: writing,
2. Juniper and Thorn by Ava Reid
This was marketed as a Juniper Tree retelling but it really has nothing to do with the fairy tale. Marlinchen and her two older sisters live with their wizard father in a world where magic is a thing of the past as industry booms. As witches, the three sisters are used as a tourist trap to earn money. They are rarely allowed to leave their home and one night they sneak out to the ballet and Marlinchen falls in love with the talented leading hero. Marlinchen continues to disobey her father as dead bodies around town suddenly start to turn up. This book was eerie and wholly original. It was dark but in some of the best ways. TW: Gore and Sexual Assault
1. Nocturne by Alyssa Wees
This book as being marketed as a Beauty and the Beast retelling, I think it needs to be looked at as its own story. I'd say it's more of a Beauty and the Beast inspired story than a true retelling. The writing style is gorgeous. The imagery it conjures is both dreamlike and haunting. Our main character Grace has lived a tragic but fascinating life. The flashbacks of a childhood during the Great Depression mixed into a strange fairytale setting was one of my favorite aspects of the book. The combination of fantasy and historical is always a genre I like and I thought this was very well done. As for the plot, I don't want to give too much away but one thing that really resonating with me was the theme of death throughout. It comes up in many different and unsuspecting ways. I can't say too much but the outlook on death was a refreshing one that we don't see to often in media and it really made me think about life and morality. This book is for readers who enjoy dark fantasies and enchanting prose. And for any ballerinas out there as well!

Trepidation
Tumblr media
The initial plan was not to lodge within the Cress Estate after the gathering, but given Vahalia's generosity, he had requested that Marion show him to one of the guest rooms after he had sufficiently satiated himself at the bar.
The stone walls of the estate created an ever present chill within the room despite the crackling hearth across from the bed. The atmosphere had reminded him of the Gray Estate and his childhood. The thoughts of such things had populated in the forefront of his mind as he drifted to sleep.
The chill of the morning air stirred him awake as the fire had all but dissipated into coals at the bottom of the hearth. Several logs were tossed atop the iron bracket as he stoked it back to life momentarily. Following that, it had not taken the fire haired male long to dress. His attire was much different than the elegant fabrics from the previous night. Instead he wore thick leathers and furs to shelter him from the bitter Ishgardian climate.
A satchel was strewn over his shoulder as he navigated the halls of the estate and arrived at the large staircase that lead to the massive doorway. Now that he was at a rather familiar point of the estate, it had taken him no time at all to make his way to Vahalia's office. His knuckles had rapped along the wood and he waited momentarily for someone to answer. Though he was greeted by the sound of large footsteps of the male Roe. "She's not here," he chided as Damien sharply drew in a breath.
There was a moment to compose himself as he smiled up at the male. "Perhaps you'd permit me to leave something for her on her desk?"
The slight nod from the male had all but given Damien permission to enter the office. His strides were quick as he approached the desk and reached into the satchel he wore. A plain, brown paper box was removed and placed atop the desk, followed by two large satchels that had a certain jingle to them when placed down next to the box. To one who picked it up, it would be clear that the bags were full of gil. When he was satisfied with the placement, he placed a letter that had been sealed with Damien's typical seal in a purple wax so dark it was nearly black.
Vahalia, Our payment as agreed upon for the schematics and upfront financing of the ship. Progress is coming along per my attendants, though I have yet to see it for myself. I depart for Thavnair shortly, though I invite you upon my return to review the progress of the ship alongside me. The box is proof of my loyalty to your sister and the lengths I have gone to and will go to in order to protect her. I hope that it quells some of your trepidation between Valeria and I. Damien
With that, Damien had closed the satchel once more and departed the office with a quick nod to Bruce before he disappeared within the corridors.

In true [Marion] Fairfax style, her [1919] script of The Secret Garden is a model of creepy details and shifty, underhanded dealings. These include Mary's two forays into a bog, and Dr. Craven's plot to poison Colin so that the doctor can inherit the manor. The movie is designed to keep filmgoers in a state of pop-eyed anxiety, but it also gratifies the softhearted by interposing an especially doting Mrs. Sowerby, and by marrying off Colin and Mary, who in this version are not cousins. Fairfax's Mrs. Medlock is a punishing crone who forces Mary to hem towels as a penalty for having helped Colin remove a brace prescribed by the sadistic Dr. Craven. At the end of the picture, the garden is "full of bloom, and happiness reigns"; but an important function of this mysterious walled quadrangle on the grounds of Misselthwaite is to serve as a place of retribution in which the children bury Colin's brace, to even the score with the malevolent medic.
--Sally Sims Stokes, "Painting the Garden: Noel Streatfeild, the Garden as Restorative, and Pre-1950 Dramatizations of The Secret Garden," from In the Garden: Essays in Honor of Frances Hodgson Burnett, edited by Angelica Shirley Carpenter
The first film adaptation of The Secret Garden was made in 1919. It has since been lost, but its script and a summary do still exist, from which Stokes derives the above description. It is interesting how many elements not from the book that are part of this adaptation have continued to be used by later films, such as the villainization of the doctor and Mrs. Medlock, romance between the children, and sensationalized action sequences. Yet unlike many later versions, it includes Mrs. Sowerby in a significant role.

Update on moving onto a boat.
I just watched Surfs up for maybe the second time in my life, and I think it's a highly underrated movie. if its not, I'm writing this in hopes I manifest more Surfs up appreciation in my life.
I think the movies animation is fricken beautiful ✨️✨️They drew so .uch inspiration from professional and novice surfers to get all the movements and stances correct, and they took footage of waves forming and crashing so they could get the most realistically animated waves they could, that coupled with the first hand testimonies of the surfers on how water acts I think they did a really beautiful job 🌊✨️
Does it pass the Bechdel test you may ask?
No. It does not. There are 2 women ( Edna Maverick, Lani Aliikai) and 1 little girl (Kate) in this story, and none of them talk to each other. The little girl does mention Lani, so it's known that they know each other, but they're never in the same scene.
Edna Maverick is Cody Mavericks (the main character) mom. A Rockhopper penguin whose species mates for life loses her husband to an orca whale right after her youngest son Cody is hatched. A single parent now raising 2 kids by herself, a young son hellbent on going against the grain and another son who bullies him for it in a community that shuns individuality. She's caught between wanting to be encouraging to her son while simultaneously not looking like an enabler to the rest of the town.
Cody Maverick is a young man with big ambitions stuck in a small town where community is the biggest priority. Although Cody works hard to hone his skills on his own he is labeled selfish and lazy by his brother and community for not volenteering all of his time for others. Despite being a social pariah. Abd the lCk of support from his family Cody doesn't let anyones disapproval of him dissuade him of his goals of being a great surfer.
I'm not going to do a review of every character, but I'll do one more as I find this character to be delightful and his wiki to be wild. 😁🐓
Chicken Joe!!! Hailing from Marion Ohio, Joe grew up surfing Lake Erie. In 2004, Joe found himself attending an online college course in Yuma, Arizona, and got an online associate degree in psychology from the University of Phoenix. He then moved back to Sheboygan in 2007, where he was picked up to be a surfer for the Tenth Annual Big Z Memorial Surf. (I didn't know he went to college or that college even exists in this universe until I read his wiki) Chicken Joe is the embodiment of the golden Retreiver best friend, just a guy happy doing his own thing 100% of them time and is stoked that you want to do them too. He's the kind of guy that will drive to pick you up from a scary situation if you gave him a snack once because he said he was hungry... how effective he'll be at saving you I don't know because he's not a very focused individual. he's got a heart of gold though and no one can tell me otherwise.
Surfs up is honestly a really nice feel-good movie about finding out why you love what you love and not letting others' perceptions of you get on the way of enjoying yourself. I feel like I need that message sometimes, and if anyone else can relate, I encourage you to watch Surfs Up im sure you'll have a good time.
